guess that at some point in 00:00:01.56\00:00:03.60 your life you have thought to 00:00:03.60\00:00:05.10 yourself, "I wish I could see 00:00:05.10\00:00:06.50 God." And the truth is that 00:00:06.50\00:00:08.30 you have. You have seen God. 00:00:08.30\00:00:11.11 >> Have you ever heard someone 00:00:11.11\00:00:12.84 say, "Unless I see Him with my 00:00:12.84\00:00:15.08 own eyes, I won't believe in 00:00:15.08\00:00:16.34 God." 00:00:16.34\00:00:17.35 >> Then everyone should 00:00:17.35\00:00:19.01 believe in God because we have 00:00:19.01\00:00:20.92 all seen Him. 00:00:20.92\00:00:22.35 >> In Matthew 25 the Bible 00:00:22.35\00:00:24.42 says there will be two groups 00:00:24.42\00:00:26.19 of people on the final day of 00:00:26.19\00:00:28.12 judgement who will ask God 00:00:28.12\00:00:29.69 this question: "Lord, when did 00:00:29.69\00:00:32.39 we see You?" 00:00:32.39\00:00:34.13 >> And He will answer them: 00:00:34.13\00:00:35.86 "When you saw that stranger 00:00:35.86\00:00:37.67 who was hungry and thirsty and 00:00:37.67\00:00:40.40 needed something to wear, you 00:00:40.40\00:00:42.67 were looking at Me." 00:00:42.67\00:00:44.67 >> God will say, "You did see 00:00:44.67\00:00:46.64 Me because it was I who was 00:00:46.64\00:00:48.64 hungry and thirsty. It was I 00:00:48.64\00:00:51.15 who was a stranger. It was I 00:00:51.15\00:00:53.92 who was sick. It was I who was 00:00:53.92\00:00:55.85 in prison." 00:00:55.85\00:00:57.12 >> So all the days of your 00:00:57.12\00:00:58.69 life God has been very near to 00:00:58.69\00:01:01.19 you in the person of the poor 00:01:01.19\00:01:03.56 and the suffering. The 00:01:03.56\00:01:05.19 question is: did you see Him? 00:01:05.19\00:01:07.20 Did you seek to help Him? 00:01:07.20\00:01:10.23 Did you take time to get 00:01:10.23\00:01:11.47 to know Him? 00:01:11.47\00:01:12.33 >> I John 4 verse 7 says, 00:01:12.33\00:01:14.40 "Everyone who loves is born of 00:01:14.40\00:01:16.74 God and knows God." 00:01:16.74\00:01:19.41 >> So we want to challenge you 00:01:19.41\00:01:20.91 to see God in every person in 00:01:20.91\00:01:22.64 need. For the single mother 00:01:22.64\00:01:24.18 who is struggling to feed and 00:01:24.18\00:01:26.85 clothe her children or the 00:01:26.85\00:01:28.68 teenager who is feeling lonely 00:01:28.68\00:01:30.15 and depressed. 00:01:30.15\00:01:31.69 >> And as you open your heart 00:01:31.69\00:01:33.36 and your doors to those in 00:01:33.36\00:01:35.12 need, you are opening your 00:01:35.12\00:01:36.42 heart to God. 00:01:36.42\00:01:38.66 >> So in a moment we will be 00:01:38.66\00:01:40.13 meeting with three people 00:01:40.13\00:01:41.60 whose purpose is to serve 00:01:41.60\00:01:43.90 humanity so that all may live 00:01:43.90\00:01:45.60 as God intended. 00:01:45.60\00:01:48.34 € 00:01:48.77\00:02:04.99 >> Hello and thank you for 00:02:04.99\00:02:06.15 joining us on It Is Written 00:02:06.15\00:02:07.09 Canada. Wouldn't it be 00:02:07.09\00:02:08.62 wonderful to wake up every 00:02:08.62\00:02:09.79 morning and to have life 00:02:09.79\00:02:11.79 absolutely predictable. 00:02:11.79\00:02:14.66 Well, sometimes 00:02:14.66\00:02:15.80 it's not like that. 00:02:15.80\00:02:16.90 You know, you wish it would be. 00:02:16.90\00:02:18.87 You wish that you could 00:02:18.87\00:02:20.17 wake up and know that you have 00:02:20.17\00:02:22.14 job security, you know that 00:02:22.14\00:02:24.41 there's enough money in the 00:02:24.41\00:02:25.14 bank to make all of your 00:02:25.14\00:02:26.41 payments and that your home 00:02:26.41\00:02:27.81 will be taken care of. 00:02:27.81\00:02:29.21 But many Canadians right now 00:02:29.21\00:02:30.68 are not in that situation. 00:02:30.68\00:02:32.71 There are many who are in a 00:02:32.71\00:02:35.45 situation where they have lost 00:02:35.45\00:02:36.69 their jobs and they don't know 00:02:36.69\00:02:39.39 how they're going to make 00:02:39.39\00:02:40.19 their payments. And it's in 00:02:40.19\00:02:41.32 times like these that we are 00:02:41.32\00:02:43.59 so thankful for organizations 00:02:43.59\00:02:45.19 such as ADRA Canada. 00:02:45.19\00:02:48.23 >> Today we have Steve Matthews 00:02:48.23\00:02:51.00 who is the Executive Director 00:02:51.00\00:02:52.37 for ADRA Canada joining us. 00:02:52.37\00:02:54.94 Welcome, Steve, and thank you 00:02:54.94\00:02:56.00 so much for being here. 00:02:56.00\00:02:58.07 >> Thank you very much for 00:02:58.07\00:02:58.94 having me. 00:02:58.94\00:02:59.81 >> Well, your purpose every 00:02:59.81\00:03:02.04 day is to meet the needs of 00:03:02.04\00:03:05.28 Canadians. And not just in 00:03:05.28\00:03:09.02 Canada, but throughout the 00:03:09.02\00:03:10.52 world, too. So, Steve, why 00:03:10.52\00:03:12.52 don't you tell us how this 00:03:12.52\00:03:14.79 pandemic has impacted your 00:03:14.79\00:03:17.03 work here at ADRA Canada? 00:03:17.03\00:03:20.30 >> Absolutely. The work that 00:03:20.30\00:03:22.33 we do at ADRA Canada is 00:03:22.33\00:03:24.20 predominantly international, 00:03:24.20\00:03:27.84 but because of the recent 00:03:27.84\00:03:30.01 pandemic that has been taking 00:03:30.01\00:03:32.21 place in the country, we've 00:03:32.21\00:03:33.48 also started to really focus 00:03:33.48\00:03:35.31 on a domestic response as well. 00:03:35.31\00:03:38.45 When the pandemic 00:03:39.61\00:03:40.95 happened and we start seeing 00:03:40.95\00:03:42.48 different businesses shutting 00:03:42.48\00:03:43.72 down, it impacted us as well. 00:03:43.72\00:03:45.65 So we, in the middle of a 00:03:45.65\00:03:47.42 pandemic where things are 00:03:47.42\00:03:48.99 changing rapidly, we also went 00:03:48.99\00:03:51.49 through a transition where we 00:03:51.49\00:03:54.03 moved to virtual office. 00:03:54.03\00:03:55.96 So making that transition with 00:03:55.96\00:03:59.23 all the busyness that's going 00:03:59.23\00:04:00.44 on was quite significant for us. 00:04:00.44\00:04:04.27 What we did in Canada is 00:04:04.27\00:04:05.87 we've made funding available 00:04:05.87\00:04:08.64 for a granting process to be 00:04:08.64\00:04:10.68 able to have projects taking 00:04:10.68\00:04:12.58 place here in Canada to meet 00:04:12.58\00:04:14.65 the needs locally. 00:04:14.65\00:04:17.52 What this pandemic has done 00:04:17.52\00:04:18.69 is it's really increased the -- 00:04:18.69\00:04:22.82 it's magnified the 00:04:22.82\00:04:23.83 need in Canada 00:04:23.83\00:04:25.36 and poor are the most 00:04:25.36\00:04:29.93 vulnerable and unfortunately 00:04:29.93\00:04:31.43 here in Canada we've seen an 00:04:31.43\00:04:33.20 increase in need for food bank 00:04:33.20\00:04:35.94 assistance, especially food 00:04:35.94\00:04:38.31 security has been a real 00:04:38.31\00:04:39.67 challenge, on top of all of 00:04:39.67\00:04:41.64 the other challenges with 00:04:41.64\00:04:42.81 regards to rent and bill 00:04:42.81\00:04:44.45 payments and those sorts of 00:04:44.45\00:04:45.25 things. 00:04:45.25\00:04:46.72 >> So tell us about the Bible. 00:04:47.62\00:04:49.18 Does the Bible give you 00:04:49.18\00:04:50.52 guidance specifically in 00:04:50.52\00:04:52.79 dealing with this situation? 00:04:52.79\00:04:54.42 >> Absolutely. I think almost 00:04:54.86\00:04:57.29 any situation we go through 00:04:57.29\00:04:58.59 you can find some guidance in 00:04:58.59\00:04:59.86 the Bible and when I look at 00:04:59.86\00:05:02.53 the Bible and I think of the 00:05:02.53\00:05:05.00 leprosy that's identified in 00:05:05.00\00:05:06.57 the Bible and we see how when 00:05:06.57\00:05:09.80 someone came down with leprosy 00:05:09.80\00:05:11.04 back in Bible times, they were 00:05:11.04\00:05:12.24 sent out of the community. 00:05:12.24\00:05:13.91 So they had this real social 00:05:13.91\00:05:15.71 isolation that was taking 00:05:15.71\00:05:16.78 place where they were sent out 00:05:16.78\00:05:18.05 to another community where the 00:05:18.05\00:05:20.75 lepers were living and when 00:05:20.75\00:05:22.62 they walked through the 00:05:22.62\00:05:23.65 community they had to 00:05:23.65\00:05:24.65 yell out, "Unclean, unclean!" 00:05:24.65\00:05:26.79 People stayed away from them, 00:05:26.79\00:05:28.52 they didn't have that social 00:05:28.52\00:05:30.26 connection, they didn't have 00:05:30.26\00:05:31.26 the contact with their loved 00:05:31.26\00:05:32.79 ones anymore. 00:05:32.79\00:05:34.63 I don't think we have to 00:05:35.36\00:05:36.36 stretch our minds too 00:05:36.36\00:05:37.73 much to see that that's 00:05:37.73\00:05:38.87 certainly the situation that 00:05:38.87\00:05:41.40 we're living in here in Canada 00:05:41.40\00:05:42.57 now. When you go out to a 00:05:42.57\00:05:43.84 store you have to stay six 00:05:43.84\00:05:46.11 feet apart. There's tape on 00:05:46.11\00:05:48.61 the lines to make sure that 00:05:48.61\00:05:49.48 you don't go between these 00:05:49.48\00:05:51.75 lines and you keep that 00:05:51.75\00:05:53.35 distance away from people. 00:05:53.35\00:05:55.05 Families can't go visit their 00:05:55.85\00:05:57.12 grandparents, grandchildren 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.49 can't go visit their 00:05:59.49\00:06:00.66 grandparents who are living in 00:06:00.66\00:06:01.59 a long-term care facility. 00:06:01.59\00:06:02.42 We hear of people that are just 00:06:02.42\00:06:03.89 talking to people through a 00:06:03.89\00:06:05.13 window and being able to go 00:06:05.13\00:06:06.66 wave and say "Hi, we're here." 00:06:06.66\00:06:08.73 Loneliness is there. 00:06:08.73\00:06:11.60 But Jesus was able to reach out 00:06:11.60\00:06:13.84 to people that 00:06:13.84\00:06:14.74 were going through 00:06:14.74\00:06:15.37 situations like that and so 00:06:15.37\00:06:17.07 I think there's a lot we can 00:06:17.07\00:06:18.31 learn from how Christ treated 00:06:18.31\00:06:20.48 those that were going through 00:06:20.48\00:06:21.61 those situations. He was able 00:06:21.61\00:06:23.24 to meet the needs. Now He was 00:06:23.24\00:06:24.98 able to even go and touch the 00:06:24.98\00:06:27.22 lepers heal them from their 00:06:27.22\00:06:31.79 situation, their disease. 00:06:31.79\00:06:34.12 But we can certainly, in our 00:06:34.12\00:06:35.69 situation, still meet the 00:06:35.69\00:06:36.46 needs of others in safe ways 00:06:36.46\00:06:38.73 where we can still maintain 00:06:38.73\00:06:39.96 the distance, but also make 00:06:39.96\00:06:41.40 those, while it's physical 00:06:41.40\00:06:42.96 distance, I don't think it has 00:06:42.96\00:06:44.20 to be social distance to the 00:06:44.20\00:06:45.90 point where we can't still 00:06:45.90\00:06:47.80 communicate and contact 00:06:47.80\00:06:48.90 people. 00:06:48.90\00:06:49.97 >> Absolutely. We've got 00:06:49.97\00:06:51.31 technology, we've got ways of 00:06:51.31\00:06:52.31 communicating with one another 00:06:52.31\00:06:54.04 which is so much better today. 00:06:54.04\00:06:55.48 >> Exactly. 00:06:55.48\00:06:56.44 >> Absolutely true. 00:06:56.44\00:06:57.78 >> So, Steve, can you tell us 00:06:57.78\00:06:59.71 what has made it possible for 00:06:59.71\00:07:01.42 ADRA Canada to complete this 00:07:01.42\00:07:03.12 work in Canada that you're 00:07:03.12\00:07:04.89 doing presently right now? 00:07:04.89\00:07:06.79 >> Well, as the humanitarian 00:07:06.79\00:07:09.06 arm of the Seventh-day 00:07:09.06\00:07:09.89 Adventist Church, we have a 00:07:09.89\00:07:12.69 network of churches across the 00:07:12.69\00:07:13.90 country that we've been able 00:07:13.90\00:07:15.40 to partner with. So the grant 00:07:15.40\00:07:17.27 money that we've made 00:07:17.27\00:07:18.63 available has been provided to 00:07:18.63\00:07:20.67 different entities across the 00:07:20.67\00:07:22.44 country. 00:07:22.44\00:07:23.34 And out of that we've 00:07:23.34\00:07:25.91 funded 28 different projects 00:07:25.91\00:07:28.44 and those projects range from 00:07:28.44\00:07:30.91 right from the Pacific coast 00:07:30.91\00:07:33.01 even up toward the Arctic and 00:07:33.01\00:07:34.62 over to the Atlantic Ocean. 00:07:34.62\00:07:36.79 >> Wow. 00:07:36.79\00:07:37.42 And being able to take 00:07:37.42\00:07:39.05 advantage of that -- 00:07:39.05\00:07:40.62 those churches that are already 00:07:40.62\00:07:43.69 there and entities that are 00:07:43.69\00:07:45.16 already set up has really 00:07:45.16\00:07:46.46 helped us to be able to make 00:07:46.46\00:07:47.50 that a reality. 00:07:47.50\00:07:50.23 So my colleague who will be 00:07:50.23\00:07:52.17 joining us shortly, 00:07:52.17\00:07:54.40 Daniel Saugh, 00:07:54.40\00:07:55.84 will be able to 00:07:55.84\00:07:56.60 tell a little bit 00:07:56.60\00:07:57.21 more about the details of some 00:07:57.31\00:07:58.71 of the work that we're doing. 00:07:58.71\00:08:00.04 He's got some good stories of 00:08:00.04\00:08:01.34 some of the work that we're 00:08:01.34\00:08:02.64 doing across the country. 00:08:02.64\00:08:04.48 >> Well, thank you, and Daniel 00:08:04.48\00:08:06.35 will be right back. 00:08:06.35\00:08:07.72 We are going to be listening 00:08:07.72\00:08:08.95 to a song right now: 00:08:08.95\00:08:10.39 "'Tis So Sweet To 00:08:10.39\00:08:11.35 Trust In Jesus." 00:08:11.35\00:08:11.99 And as Steve was telling us, 00:08:11.99\00:08:14.69 you know, during a time when 00:08:14.69\00:08:17.56 people have to be isolated 00:08:17.56\00:08:19.29 from one another, Jesus is 00:08:19.29\00:08:20.63 there and we can trust in Him. 00:08:20.63\00:08:22.30 So we're going to Tell us what's 00:11:59.81\00:12:01.35 happening within Canada during 00:12:01.35\00:12:02.68 this time of crisis. 00:12:02.68\00:12:03.79 >> Sure, it's a pleasure. 00:12:03.79\00:12:05.69 As our Executive Director, 00:12:05.69\00:12:07.42 Steve Matthews, mentioned, 00:12:07.42\00:12:09.29 this role that I serve in 00:12:09.29\00:12:11.19 oversees the 00:12:11.19\00:12:12.06 domestic and Canadian 00:12:12.06\00:12:13.26 program across our country. 00:12:13.26\00:12:15.40 And we have some amazing 00:12:15.40\00:12:17.43 incoming stories in the recent 00:12:17.43\00:12:20.47 outbreak of COVID-19 and we're 00:12:20.47\00:12:22.57 just very happy to share that 00:12:22.57\00:12:23.81 with you all today. 00:12:23.81\00:12:24.67 >> I love stories, so go ahead! 00:12:24.67\00:12:25.84 >> Well, starting from the 00:12:25.84\00:12:26.51 East Coast, we have an amazing 00:12:26.51\00:12:28.24 story of a family, 00:12:28.24\00:12:29.48 Mark and Alison, 00:12:29.48\00:12:32.41 and they have seven children, 00:12:32.41\00:12:34.88 ranging from one to eighteen. 00:12:34.88\00:12:35.98 >> Seven kids. 00:12:35.98\00:12:36.95 >> Yes, seven children. 00:12:36.95\00:12:37.72 >> That's a big family! 00:12:37.72\00:12:38.69 >> They have a huge family! 00:12:38.69\00:12:39.89 And Mark has been in the 00:12:39.89\00:12:41.09 construction work and his wife, 00:12:41.09\00:12:42.79 Alison, works part time 00:12:42.79\00:12:44.53 and they have been reasonably 00:12:44.53\00:12:46.46 comfortable in providing for 00:12:46.46\00:12:47.50 their family. 00:12:47.50\00:12:48.66 However, tough times set in 00:12:48.66\00:12:49.80 when Mark had an injury. 00:12:49.80\00:12:51.23 He fell at his work site 00:12:51.23\00:12:53.90 and he was bedridden for 00:12:53.90\00:12:55.14 two weeks and he went on 00:12:55.14\00:12:57.34 worker's compensation. 00:12:57.34\00:12:59.24 With his income cut in half and 00:12:59.24\00:13:01.31 Alison working part time, 00:13:01.31\00:13:02.81 it was difficult to feed their 00:13:02.81\00:13:04.28 large family and provide for 00:13:04.28\00:13:05.25 their needs. 00:13:05.25\00:13:06.18 >> Exactly. 00:13:06.18\00:13:07.25 >> He actually says this, 00:13:07.25\00:13:09.28 he mentions, "You don't realize 00:13:09.28\00:13:11.02 how expensive it is to bring 00:13:11.02\00:13:12.39 up children in this day 00:13:12.39\00:13:14.19 and age until you have them. 00:13:14.19\00:13:16.39 I used to wonder why people 00:13:16.39\00:13:17.73 don't have more kids until I 00:13:17.73\00:13:18.73 got my own. 00:13:18.73\00:13:20.06 It's insane," Mark shares. 00:13:20.06\00:13:23.20 But, you know, for the 00:13:23.20\00:13:24.87 year prior to COVID-19, the 00:13:24.87\00:13:27.00 family used to use a food bank 00:13:27.00\00:13:28.80 once a month as a supplement 00:13:28.80\00:13:30.27 to their groceries. 00:13:30.27\00:13:31.94 But when the pandemic 00:13:31.94\00:13:32.87 hit Canada, 00:13:32.87\00:13:33.81 and particularly in Nova Scotia, 00:13:33.81\00:13:35.91 this food bank wasn't able to 00:13:35.91\00:13:38.11 sustain and provide enough 00:13:38.11\00:13:39.11 food and they actually closed. 00:13:39.11\00:13:41.08 And so thankfully Mark was 00:13:41.08\00:13:42.65 referred to one of our church 00:13:42.65\00:13:45.35 entities that ADRA Canada 00:13:45.35\00:13:46.35 partnered with that is the 00:13:46.35\00:13:48.02 Parker Street Food and 00:13:48.02\00:13:49.52 Furniture Bank and he was able 00:13:49.52\00:13:51.26 to access food for his family. 00:13:51.26\00:13:52.99 He actually mentioned, "The 00:13:52.99\00:13:54.20 food was wonderfully provided 00:13:54.20\00:13:56.23 and satisfactory and it was so 00:13:56.23\00:13:57.57 nice to have a food bank 00:13:57.57\00:13:58.83 helping us out." 00:13:58.83\00:14:00.14 And so in the last 00:14:00.97\00:14:02.50 several months 00:14:02.50\00:14:03.41 since April, ADRA Canada has 00:14:03.41\00:14:05.21 partnered with the Seventh-day 00:14:05.21\00:14:06.57 Adventist Church in Canada and 00:14:06.57\00:14:07.91 with the North American Division 00:14:07.91\00:14:09.21 of Seventh-day Adventist's 00:14:09.21\00:14:09.91 Adventist Community Services 00:14:09.91\00:14:11.15 to provide funding for the 00:14:11.15\00:14:12.98 Parker Street Food Bank 00:14:12.98\00:14:15.48 and they've been helping 00:14:15.48\00:14:17.19 hundreds of people daily. 00:14:17.19\00:14:19.09 >> I'm sure, I'm sure. 00:14:19.09\00:14:20.59 Especially with people 00:14:20.59\00:14:21.19 without jobs -- 00:14:21.19\00:14:21.76 >> Exactly. 00:14:21.76\00:14:22.39 >> And now they're in a 00:14:22.39\00:14:22.92 situation where you can 00:14:22.92\00:14:23.93 provide and I'm so thankful for 00:14:23.93\00:14:25.79 ADRA Canada that they're there. 00:14:25.79\00:14:27.66 This is kind of like 00:14:27.66\00:14:28.70 the highlight of your job. 00:14:28.70\00:14:30.70 This is what you wait for. 00:14:30.70\00:14:31.87 >> This is what we look 00:14:31.87\00:14:32.97 for to do. 00:14:32.97\00:14:33.84 >> You wait for 00:14:33.84\00:14:34.57 people in need -- 00:14:34.57\00:14:35.40 >> Precisely. 00:14:35.40\00:14:36.24 >> And you're right there on 00:14:36.24\00:14:37.01 the ground. What a blessing to 00:14:37.01\00:14:38.17 be able to do that for people. 00:14:38.17\00:14:39.41 >> It really is, it really is. 00:14:39.41\00:14:41.14 And so moving from the East 00:14:41.14\00:14:42.38 Coast I'll take you over to 00:14:42.38\00:14:44.11 Central Canada in the province 00:14:44.11\00:14:46.35 of Ontario and there is an 00:14:46.35\00:14:48.55 amazing church, it's a 00:14:48.55\00:14:49.98 community-centred church 00:14:49.98\00:14:51.02 called Really Living in 00:14:51.02\00:14:52.49 Hamilton, Ontario. 00:14:52.49\00:14:53.92 And they have been providing 00:14:53.92\00:14:55.46 free grocery bags of food for 00:14:55.46\00:14:57.89 families. So families can 00:14:57.89\00:14:59.66 register online and they can 00:14:59.66\00:15:01.40 either come and pick it up, 00:15:01.40\00:15:03.40 of course respecting social 00:15:03.40\00:15:04.93 and physical distance, 00:15:04.93\00:15:06.27 or if they are not able to 00:15:06.27\00:15:07.77 access a vehicle to come, 00:15:07.77\00:15:09.44 the volunteers of the 00:15:09.44\00:15:10.77 Really Living church will 00:15:10.77\00:15:12.04 actually deliver it at their 00:15:12.04\00:15:13.24 doorstep. 00:15:13.24\00:15:14.84 And the pastor there, yeah -- 00:15:14.84\00:15:17.81 >> So were they waiting, ready 00:15:17.81\00:15:19.88 to do this? 00:15:19.88\00:15:21.38 >> Absolutely! In fact, the 00:15:21.38\00:15:22.38 pastor, Francis Douville, they 00:15:22.38\00:15:24.42 were planning for their annual 00:15:24.42\00:15:25.55 international mission 00:15:25.55\00:15:28.02 humanitarian trip. 00:15:28.02\00:15:29.56 They usually go on a 00:15:29.56\00:15:30.53 mission trip 00:15:30.53\00:15:31.93 or project and they were going 00:15:31.93\00:15:33.40 to Peru this year and one of 00:15:33.40\00:15:35.26 the main coordinators, 00:15:35.26\00:15:37.77 her name is Ada, her and her 00:15:37.77\00:15:39.80 children cruise in Asia, 00:15:39.80\00:15:41.57 of course because of travel 00:15:41.57\00:15:42.24 restrictions, they couldn't go 00:15:42.24\00:15:43.74 again and so they decided to 00:15:43.74\00:15:45.47 pour their energies in this 00:15:45.47\00:15:46.74 local mission and now they've 00:15:46.74\00:15:48.74 been helping to provide these 00:15:48.74\00:15:50.51 grocery bags in a large way to 00:15:50.51\00:15:52.95 help families in the area 00:15:52.95\00:15:54.35 that's been affected 00:15:54.35\00:15:55.68 significantly by COVID-19. 00:15:55.68\00:15:58.05 >> That's so wonderful! 00:15:58.05\00:15:59.29 So these families 00:15:59.29\00:16:00.26 register online 00:16:00.26\00:16:01.32 and if they're not able to go 00:16:01.32\00:16:02.76 and pick them up they're 00:16:02.76\00:16:03.89 actually delivered right to 00:16:03.89\00:16:05.33 their front door -- 00:16:05.33\00:16:06.16 >> Absolutely! 00:16:06.16\00:16:06.83 >> For each family. 00:16:06.83\00:16:07.76 >> They were just telling me a 00:16:07.76\00:16:09.13 quick story: because of 00:16:09.13\00:16:10.43 physical distance they would 00:16:10.43\00:16:11.33 put it on their porch or their 00:16:11.33\00:16:12.57 footstep, ring the bell, and 00:16:12.57\00:16:13.57 just run away. 00:16:13.57\00:16:14.80 So when they open the door, 00:16:14.80\00:16:15.94 Voila! Very fulfilling. 00:16:31.22\00:16:33.12 >> Yeah, absolutely. 00:16:33.12\00:16:33.82 >> Very satisfying. 00:16:33.82\00:16:34.62 >> So there Ada was with her 00:16:34.62\00:16:36.09 children and they were 00:16:36.09\00:16:37.39 prepared to go overseas and 00:16:37.39\00:16:38.76 the door was closed and 00:16:38.76\00:16:40.70 Jesus opened up another door. 00:16:40.70\00:16:42.56 >> Exactly. 00:16:42.56\00:16:43.60 >> So, you know, when you're 00:16:43.60\00:16:44.83 prepared to serve, the Lord 00:16:44.83\00:16:46.60 will use you to serve. 00:16:46.60\00:16:48.74 You will always be in demand. 00:16:48.74\00:16:49.77 >> I believe that. 00:16:49.77\00:16:50.84 >> So make yourself ready 00:16:50.84\00:16:52.04 to serve. 00:16:52.04\00:16:52.91 >> Yes. Sometimes our mission 00:16:52.91\00:16:53.81 field is right in our own 00:16:53.81\00:16:54.81 back yard. 00:16:54.81\00:16:55.44 >> Exactly. And that's what 00:16:55.44\00:16:56.51 you want, to start there and 00:16:56.51\00:16:58.21 just go out and meet other 00:16:58.21\00:17:00.08 needs. So we're so thankful 00:17:00.08\00:17:02.12 for ADRA Canada and what 00:17:02.12\00:17:03.22 you're doing. 00:17:03.22\00:17:04.05 >> Thank God! And I'm going to 00:17:04.05\00:17:04.82 keep moving! 00:17:04.82\00:17:05.49 >> Yeah, tell us another story! 00:17:05.49\00:17:06.86 >> So from the East Coast, 00:17:06.86\00:17:08.09 Central Ontario -- Central 00:17:08.09\00:17:09.62 Canada, and then we're going 00:17:09.62\00:17:11.03 to move up to the Arctic. 00:17:11.03\00:17:12.79 So I'm going to take you up 00:17:12.79\00:17:13.80 there. There are two churches 00:17:13.80\00:17:16.03 that we are funding and 00:17:16.03\00:17:17.63 partnering with with ADRA 00:17:17.63\00:17:18.97 Canada and that is the city of 00:17:18.97\00:17:21.20 Iqaluit, there is the Iqaluit 00:17:21.20\00:17:22.17 Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:17:22.17\00:17:23.44 and the Igloolik Seventh-day 00:17:23.44\00:17:26.68 Adventist Group. And so they 00:17:26.68\00:17:28.18 are ministering and meeting 00:17:28.18\00:17:29.91 the needs of primarily the 00:17:29.91\00:17:31.65 First Nations. Eighty percent 00:17:31.65\00:17:33.05 of their population is 00:17:33.05\00:17:34.98 indigenous, the First Nations. 00:17:34.98\00:17:36.32 And so of course you can 00:17:36.32\00:17:37.99 imagine it's hard to transport 00:17:37.99\00:17:39.29 food up there, given the 00:17:39.29\00:17:41.92 climate and the distance. 00:17:41.92\00:17:43.43 >> Absolutely. 00:17:43.43\00:17:44.39 >> And so we're partnering 00:17:44.39\00:17:45.29 with them for their food 00:17:45.29\00:17:46.70 relief program and supplying 00:17:46.70\00:17:47.93 their food bank so they can 00:17:47.93\00:17:49.20 really be able to provide the 00:17:49.20\00:17:50.70 essential food items for their 00:17:50.70\00:17:52.87 communities respectively. 00:17:52.87\00:17:54.27 >> That's wonderful! 00:17:54.27\00:17:55.70 >> That is a big expense, but 00:17:55.70\00:17:57.94 yet you're meeting a big need 00:17:57.94\00:17:59.77 in that community so I'm sure 00:17:59.77\00:18:01.68 they're very thankful for that. 00:18:01.68\00:18:03.28 >> Yes, they are very grateful 00:18:03.28\00:18:05.21 and they're looking forward to 00:18:05.21\00:18:07.32 continuing to do that great 00:18:07.32\00:18:08.35 work so we're happy to partner 00:18:08.35\00:18:09.52 with them up close to the 00:18:09.52\00:18:11.12 Arctic Circle there. 00:18:11.12\00:18:12.12 >> These are wonderful 00:18:12.12\00:18:12.79 highlights that you're sharing 00:18:12.79\00:18:13.69 with us, thank you. 00:18:13.69\00:18:14.39 >> You're very welcome. 00:18:14.39\00:18:15.19 And we're going to move now to 00:18:15.19\00:18:16.66 Western Canada and we recently 00:18:16.66\00:18:18.66 heard of the current flooding 00:18:18.66\00:18:21.70 in "Fort Mac." Fort McMurray 00:18:21.70\00:18:23.47 in Alberta, Northern Alberta, 00:18:23.47\00:18:25.33 has been dubbed as the oil 00:18:25.33\00:18:26.57 capital of Canada. 00:18:26.57\00:18:28.37 And they've been 00:18:28.37\00:18:29.44 ravaged over the last 00:18:29.44\00:18:30.94 several years with natural 00:18:30.94\00:18:32.34 disasters such as fires, which 00:18:32.34\00:18:34.54 is actually a current threat 00:18:34.54\00:18:36.01 that's about an hour and a 00:18:36.01\00:18:37.35 half south of them potentially 00:18:37.35\00:18:38.71 coming again into the 00:18:38.71\00:18:40.68 Fort McMurray area. 00:18:40.68\00:18:42.32 But recently the big river there 00:18:42.32\00:18:45.45 actually was melting and there 00:18:45.45\00:18:48.02 was an ice jam and there was 00:18:48.02\00:18:49.59 flooding into the city and over 00:18:49.59\00:18:51.46 20,000 residents had to be 00:18:51.46\00:18:52.96 evacuated. 00:18:52.96\00:18:54.10 And the Fort McMurray 00:18:55.53\00:18:57.03 Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:18:57.03\00:18:58.07 has partnered with ADRA Canada 00:18:58.07\00:18:59.57 and they have assembled over 00:18:59.57\00:19:01.04 350 care kits and water and 00:19:01.04\00:19:03.77 dozens of people have been 00:19:03.77\00:19:05.17 coming in and they have 00:19:05.17\00:19:06.57 transformed their church foyer 00:19:06.57\00:19:08.31 into a distribution centre. 00:19:08.31\00:19:10.55 >> So when you have a flood 00:19:11.18\00:19:13.08 like this it's going to affect 00:19:13.08\00:19:15.45 sewage, the water system, 00:19:15.45\00:19:17.29 everything is going to be 00:19:17.29\00:19:19.05 affected and people are in need. 00:19:19.05\00:19:21.82 >> They are absolutely 00:19:21.82\00:19:22.99 displaced and there's nowhere 00:19:22.99\00:19:23.66 to go and I was recently 00:19:23.66\00:19:24.56 talking to the pastor, 00:19:24.56\00:19:25.53 David Guzman, there and he was 00:19:25.53\00:19:27.10 mentioning that in addition to 00:19:27.10\00:19:28.30 the food, his first elder, 00:19:28.30\00:19:30.97 one of the spiritual leaders of 00:19:30.97\00:19:32.63 his church, Andrew, 00:19:32.63\00:19:34.00 is actually the coordinator for 00:19:34.00\00:19:36.81 crisis and trauma care and he 00:19:36.81\00:19:38.31 volunteers his time and works 00:19:38.31\00:19:39.81 with the local mayor there and 00:19:39.81\00:19:42.81 other churches and agencies to 00:19:42.81\00:19:45.51 coordinate crisis and trauma 00:19:45.51\00:19:47.78 care. People can call in for 00:19:47.78\00:19:49.52 prayer, for counselling and 00:19:49.52\00:19:51.32 they're responding to the many 00:19:51.32\00:19:53.52 needs that are taking place 00:19:53.52\00:19:54.72 currently. 00:19:54.72\00:19:56.32 >> That's so wonderful because 00:19:56.32\00:19:57.79 churches right now are empty 00:19:57.79\00:20:00.06 because, you know, no one can 00:20:00.06\00:20:01.80 go to church, but yet they're 00:20:01.80\00:20:04.47 taking this empty building and 00:20:04.47\00:20:06.77 making it useful to fulfill 00:20:06.77\00:20:08.24 people's needs. 00:20:08.24\00:20:09.50 That's so encouraging. 00:20:09.50\00:20:10.91 >> Absolutely. And what was 00:20:10.91\00:20:11.71 interesting is that as the 00:20:11.71\00:20:13.51 order to evacuate was given, 00:20:13.51\00:20:16.51 they were instructed to move 00:20:16.51\00:20:18.08 to higher ground. 00:20:18.08\00:20:18.98 >> Higher ground. 00:20:18.98\00:20:19.85 That is amazing that you say 00:20:19.85\00:20:21.42 that because the song that we're 00:20:21.42\00:20:22.78 going to go to -- now thank you 00:20:22.78\00:20:24.02 very much for being 00:20:24.02\00:20:24.69 with us, Daniel -- 00:20:24.69\00:20:25.32 >> A pleasure. 00:20:25.32\00:20:26.19 >> And right after this song 00:20:26.19\00:20:27.76 we're going to be meeting with 00:20:27.76\00:20:29.06 Anita, one of your colleagues. 00:20:29.06\00:20:31.53 And so we have a song for you 00:20:31.53\00:20:33.26 and the song is "Higher Ground" 00:20:33.26\00:20:35.00 and this is sung by some 00:20:35.00\00:20:35.80 young people who are 00:20:35.80\00:20:37.70 singing over there in Europe 00:20:37.70\00:20:39.43 and so we're going to share 00:20:39.43\00:20:41.24 that song with you right now, 00:20:41.24\00:20:42.17 "Higher Ground." 00:20:42.17\00:20:44.31 €My heart has no 00:20:45.17\00:20:46.94 €desire to stay 00:20:46.94\00:20:49.18 €Where doubts arise 00:20:49.18\00:20:50.78 €and fears dismay 00:20:50.78\00:20:52.58 €Though some may dwell 00:20:52.58\00:20:54.82 €where these abound 00:20:54.82\00:20:56.82 €My prayer, my aim, is 00:20:56.82\00:20:58.19 €higher ground 00:20:58.19\00:21:02.56 €Lord, lift me up 00:21:02.56\00:21:04.83 €and I shall stand 00:21:04.83\00:21:06.43 €By faith on heaven's 00:21:06.43\00:21:08.66 €tableland 00:21:08.66\00:21:10.43 €A higher plane 00:21:10.43\00:21:12.57 €that I have found 00:21:12.57\00:21:14.30 €Lord, plant my feet on 00:21:14.30\00:21:15.94 €higher ground 00:21:15.94\00:21:19.51 € 00:21:19.51\00:21:37.96 €I want to scale 00:21:37.96\00:21:40.36 €the utmost height 00:21:40.36\00:21:42.33 €And catch a gleam 00:21:42.33\00:21:44.07 €of glory bright 00:21:44.07\00:21:46.40 €But still I'll pray 00:21:46.40\00:21:48.50 €till hope I've found 00:21:48.50\00:21:50.37 €Lord, lead me on to 00:21:50.37\00:21:51.74 €higher ground 00:21:51.74\00:21:54.64 €Lord, lift me up 00:21:54.64\00:21:56.44 €and I shall stand 00:21:56.44\00:21:58.55 €By faith on heaven's 00:21:58.55\00:22:01.08 €tableland 00:22:01.08\00:22:02.85 €A higher plane 00:22:02.85\00:22:05.02 €that I have found 00:22:05.02\00:22:06.92 €Lord, plant my feet on 00:22:06.92\00:22:08.82 €higher ground 00:22:08.82\00:22:14.30 >> "Higher Ground," 00:22:16.13\00:22:16.93 what a beautiful song. 00:22:16.93\00:22:19.13 >> We have Anita Odondi 00:22:19.67\00:22:21.17 with us who's the 00:22:21.17\00:22:22.30 Emergency Program Director 00:22:22.30\00:22:23.37 for ADRA Canada. 00:22:23.37\00:22:24.77 Anita, thank you so much for 00:22:24.77\00:22:26.34 joining us today. 00:22:26.34\00:22:27.84 >> Thank you for having me, 00:22:27.84\00:22:28.44 Rene and Mike. 00:22:28.44\00:22:30.25 >> So you work beyond the 00:22:30.25\00:22:33.52 borders of Canada, so give us 00:22:33.52\00:22:35.68 some kind of the highlights of 00:22:35.68\00:22:36.65 what you do. 00:22:36.65\00:22:37.95 >> Yes, it's a blessing for us 00:22:37.95\00:22:39.42 to be able to serve abroad, 00:22:39.42\00:22:41.92 especially in the countries 00:22:41.92\00:22:43.12 where the systems are not 00:22:43.12\00:22:45.16 working and the governments 00:22:45.16\00:22:46.63 are overwhelmed, they are 00:22:46.63\00:22:47.96 unable to support the families 00:22:47.96\00:22:50.53 that need it the most. 00:22:50.53\00:22:52.17 So I'll tell you a story today 00:22:52.17\00:22:53.54 of a 38-year-old lady. 00:22:53.54\00:22:56.24 She's called "Noka" 00:22:56.24\00:22:57.61 in South America. 00:22:57.61\00:22:59.71 She has nine children 00:22:59.71\00:23:01.78 and another on the way. 00:23:01.78\00:23:03.75 They live in an -- 00:23:03.75\00:23:05.18 >> Wow!
