>> We have a friend who teaches online English classes to students in China who were the 00:00:00.80\00:00:06.53 first ones to be hit by the devastating coronavirus. >> So, 00:00:06.53\00:00:11.97 these were at the original epicenter, in Wuhan, China, and she has been praying for her 00:00:11.97\00:00:18.05 dear students. And now she says they are praying for us. >> She says they are concerned 00:00:18.05\00:00:23.12 for us, as we were for them, but now they are re-emerging from their many days of quarantine. 00:00:23.12\00:00:30.09 >> And as they emerge from days of isolation, one friend offered some advice for us here in 00:00:30.09\00:00:36.53 Canada. >> They were asked this question -- "What would we have 00:00:36.53\00:00:40.94 stocked up on if we knew then what we know now?" >> "So, the 00:00:40.94\00:00:46.98 first things we tried to stock up were hand sanitizers and masks and disinfectant," she 00:00:46.98\00:00:51.88 said. However, if you're in quarantine, you don't need much 00:00:51.88\00:00:57.42 of those things. If you're not among the public, then you don't need to be obsessed about 00:00:57.42\00:01:02.89 cleaning. >> She also mentioned that toilet paper has never been 00:01:02.89\00:01:07.30 an issue. "Toilet paper has not been a problem for us." >> So don't waste your space or 00:01:07.30\00:01:12.37 your health, she said, on processed foods. If you are 00:01:12.37\00:01:17.44 preparing to be stuck indoors, buying things that you can build meals from, like healthy 00:01:17.44\00:01:24.78 whole-wheat flour and rice and oil and salt and dried beans and dried nuts and fruits -- that's 00:01:24.78\00:01:32.32 more important than luxury items. >> Mm-hmm. This Christian 00:01:32.32\00:01:36.09 friend from China wrote, "Wuhan is re-emerging. "We are living with great hope and we have 00:01:36.09\00:01:43.63 great hope for you, too. You are praying for us, and we are 00:01:43.63\00:01:48.50 praying for you." >> So, when you want to react and panic and stock up and worry, she says, 00:01:48.50\00:01:55.08 remember this offer from your creator. 00:01:55.08\00:01:57.15 >> Today, we will be talking to Dr. David Sloan, the clinic 00:02:13.03\00:02:17.77 director of the Sloan Natural Health Center in Whitby, Ontario, which has a devoted, 00:02:17.77\00:02:24.54 skilled, and passionate team of natural and integrative health practitioners who help patients 00:02:24.54\00:02:31.05 receive the best of both conventional and natural medicine. >> So, we will be 00:02:31.05\00:02:35.38 right back with Dr. David Sloan, who will give us expert advice on what we can practically do to 00:02:35.38\00:02:42.39 stay healthy and keep our families healthy during this coronavirus pandemic. 00:02:42.39\00:02:48.70 ¤¤ 00:02:48.70\00:02:51.63 Welcome and thank you for joining us on 00:03:09.62\00:03:11.49 "It Is Written Canada." You know, the coronavirus 00:03:11.49\00:03:14.76 pandemic has been front and center in the news for weeks 00:03:14.76\00:03:18.96 now, and we just see that the number of cases is increasing 00:03:18.96\00:03:24.40 and the percentage of deaths is increasing. 00:03:24.40\00:03:26.90 And we have with us Dr. David Sloan, a health 00:03:26.90\00:03:29.97 practitioner, in our studios today. 00:03:29.97\00:03:32.47 And so, Dr. Sloan, thank you for joining us on 00:03:32.47\00:03:35.41 "It Is Written Canada." >> Yes. Thanks. 00:03:35.41\00:03:38.01 Thanks for having me. >> So, are you worried? 00:03:38.01\00:03:41.48 Are you panicked for your family, for yourself? 00:03:41.48\00:03:45.32 >> Yeah. Yeah, no, I'm not worried at 00:03:45.32\00:03:48.89 all. I think that, in the normal 00:03:48.89\00:03:52.09 course of things, there are flus that pass through. 00:03:52.09\00:03:55.86 This one is just a little bit more contagious. But, thankfully, there are many 00:03:55.90\00:04:00.40 things that we can do to prevent it and that we can treat it 00:04:00.40\00:04:05.27 naturally. And so, no, I don't see any reason for us to be, you know, panicking or paranoid 00:04:05.27\00:04:12.98 about, you know, what's going to happen. >> So, what about the masks, the hand sanitizer? 00:04:12.98\00:04:20.59 Good ideas? Do those things actually help? >> Well, there 00:04:20.59\00:04:24.06 are measures that are common sense, just like handwashing and keeping your distance and so on. 00:04:24.06\00:04:29.26 Just like any situation where someone's sick, you want to keep your distance from them or they 00:04:29.26\00:04:35.14 keep their distance from you in order that you don't get it. >> 00:04:35.14\00:04:39.97 Yeah. >> We know that 80% to 85% of people who get this virus have very mild symptoms. 00:04:39.97\00:04:47.58 They recover very well. There's 10% to 15% that have it a little bit more aggressively, 00:04:47.58\00:04:54.76 and they need to have a little bit more care. >> Mm-hmm. 00:04:54.76\00:04:58.83 >> And then there's maybe a 5% that have it quite badly. And then, out of that, there's a 00:04:58.83\00:05:03.97 small percentage that may not survive. >> Okay. So, there's no 00:05:03.97\00:05:08.30 known vaccination that has been produced at this stage, but let's talk about, perhaps, 00:05:08.30\00:05:12.81 natural remedies, things that people have access to. What would be the best defense 00:05:12.81\00:05:18.61 to build up a strong immune system? >> Mm-hmm. 00:05:18.61\00:05:21.92 >> So, I usually just make it simple. The four pillars or 00:05:21.92\00:05:27.49 columns of health -- diet, activity, sleep, and supplementation. So, with 00:05:27.49\00:05:37.30 respect to diet, I'm always highly recommending a plant-based diet, a clean diet, 00:05:37.30\00:05:44.14 plant-based foods, you know, your vegetables and your fruits and good natural sources of 00:05:44.14\00:05:49.04 protein. Drink lots of water, avoid caffeinated beverages, avoid sweets and sugars and 00:05:49.04\00:05:55.52 desserts and just eat a very, very clean diet. That is going 00:05:55.52\00:06:00.99 to go a long way in helping your immune system and strengthening your immune system. 00:06:00.99\00:06:05.03 >> So, that was your first pillar was your diet. And your 00:06:05.03\00:06:09.00 second pillar, you said, was activity. >> Activity. Yes. So, if you're worried about, you 00:06:09.00\00:06:15.50 know, getting this thing, you really should be thinking about getting outside and breathing 00:06:15.50\00:06:22.08 in, deep-breathing this fresh air outside, because you're not going to get better inside. 00:06:22.08\00:06:27.35 >> So, when we're saying "getting out," we're saying 00:06:27.35\00:06:29.78 getting outside. We're not saying getting into the car and going to the shopping mall. 00:06:29.78\00:06:32.42 >> [ Laughs ] We're getting outside in the fresh air and 00:06:32.42\00:06:37.03 we're breathing in lots of that outside air, which is very good for your immune system. 00:06:37.03\00:06:44.10 >> So going outdoors into nature, going for a hike. >> 00:06:44.10\00:06:49.27 Perfect. >> Mm-hmm. >> Yep. You're not going to get COVID-19 00:06:49.27\00:06:52.57 or any other virus, for that matter, outside in the fresh 00:06:52.57\00:06:56.68 air. >> So, you're talking about good nutrition and then you're talking about getting outside, 00:06:56.68\00:07:02.28 getting some activity, getting the circulation of your blood, of your oxygen, going through 00:07:02.28\00:07:06.99 your body, getting your mind clear, getting your -- I guess eliminating toxins at the same 00:07:06.99\00:07:13.76 time. And with nutrition, I guess drinking water is good for 00:07:13.76\00:07:18.63 your body. >> Lots of water, yeah. Flush things out, get 00:07:18.63\00:07:21.94 things moving, and clearing and -- Yeah. >> Okay. 00:07:21.94\00:07:24.97 And then you mentioned sleep. >> Yeah. So, we're in a society that doesn't value sleep. 00:07:24.97\00:07:32.48 We don't give it the importance that it needs. If we're not 00:07:32.48\00:07:36.85 getting our seven to eight hours of sleep a night, our immune system is badly affected and our 00:07:36.85\00:07:43.53 resistance to disease plummets. >> Mm-hmm. >> And so without 00:07:43.53\00:07:47.30 that sleep, we are going to leave ourselves much more susceptible to infection. 00:07:47.30\00:07:51.70 >> Mm-hmm. So, with all of these schools and, you know, 00:07:51.70\00:07:57.81 workplaces that are closing down, I guess people are staying at home. Maybe they should get 00:07:57.81\00:08:01.41 caught up on their rest. >> It's a good opportunity to do that, 00:08:01.41\00:08:04.68 Mike. Yes. Absolutely. >> And that will help your immune 00:08:04.68\00:08:08.12 system. >> Yeah. >> So, you were talking about supplementation. 00:08:08.12\00:08:11.02 What kind of supplements? >> Yes. So, this is an area that's very useful in prevention 00:08:11.02\00:08:18.33 and also in treatment. And, you know, we were talking earlier about the run on toilet 00:08:18.33\00:08:25.67 paper. And toilet paper is not one of the supplements that I'm 00:08:25.67\00:08:29.10 going to recommend for preventing or treating COVID-19. But one of our best friends is 00:08:29.10\00:08:36.28 vitamin C. >> Okay. >> Vitamin C is something that's 00:08:36.28\00:08:39.38 easy to take. It's inexpensive. >> Yeah. 00:08:39.38\00:08:41.68 >> It does boost the immune system. It provides protection 00:08:41.68\00:08:45.45 against these viruses, meaning that it is antiviral. And, so, for prevention, it's 00:08:45.45\00:08:52.09 very simple to just take a certain amount. And I recommend 00:08:52.09\00:08:57.17 4,000 milligrams a day, but in divided doses. So 2,000 milligrams in the morning and 00:08:57.17\00:09:02.57 2,000 milligrams in the evening will give excellent prevention properties. >> Mm-hmm. 00:09:02.57\00:09:08.08 >> If we were going to use vitamin C to treat it, then we would use much higher amounts. 00:09:08.08\00:09:14.55 So if you feel that, you know, you're having symptoms of something -- And who knows? 00:09:14.55\00:09:19.45 Maybe it might be and maybe it might not be COVID-19. But if you're feeling that you 00:09:19.45\00:09:24.83 have symptoms, then what you would do is start in with maybe 2,000 milligrams per hour and 00:09:24.83\00:09:32.87 build up until what we call bowel tolerance. So, bowel tolerances is when the 00:09:32.87\00:09:37.64 stools start to become loose, and if it's too loose, then you just cut back a bit until your 00:09:37.64\00:09:42.91 stool's normal. In clinical trials and treatment of viruses 00:09:42.91\00:09:50.62 in the past -- And many eminent physicians -- Doctors Klenner, 00:09:50.62\00:09:56.76 Linus Pauling, Dr. Robert Cathcart, Dr. Andrew Saul -- had been researching vitamin C and 00:09:56.76\00:10:05.43 its use in treating viral disease. And, so, in clinical trials, they will use -- For 00:10:05.43\00:10:13.44 coronavirus, for example, they will use anywhere from 12,000 to 24,000 milligrams of vitamin C 00:10:13.44\00:10:20.82 per day to treat it. At that level, typically, it will be mostly intravenous, but 00:10:20.82\00:10:29.72 with some oral supplementation. So, that is a one of the bright lights in treatment that is not 00:10:29.72\00:10:38.30 well-known. The media is not talking about it. 00:10:38.30\00:10:41.24 But there are three trials going on right now in Wuhan, treating with megadoses of vitamin C, 00:10:41.24\00:10:49.81 intravenously. And, also, the city of Shanghai has approved 00:10:49.81\00:10:55.35 using vitamin C in their hospitals now for this because it is proven to work very well 00:10:55.35\00:11:03.56 in treating this virus. >> I understand, in the media, though, they are covering a 00:11:03.56\00:11:08.73 Canadian-made -- or a Canadian researcher by the name of Michel Chrétien, who is the 00:11:08.73\00:11:14.87 brother of the prior prime minister, Jean Chrétien. And he is a medical researcher. 00:11:14.87\00:11:21.78 So, he has shown that the use of something called quercetin is quite effective as a prevention 00:11:21.78\00:11:29.88 and also as a treatment for viral infections, and they're using it specifically with 00:11:29.88\00:11:34.72 COVID-19. >> Yes, this is another very exciting 00:11:34.72\00:11:39.63 development. Quercetin is a natural compound. >> Mm-hmm. >> So, for the benefit of the 00:11:39.63\00:11:45.80 viewers, natural compounds are very free of side effects. They're very safe and they 00:11:45.80\00:11:51.81 don't have the side effects that could be medium or long term. And so large amounts can be 00:11:51.81\00:12:00.05 given with very little or no toxicity. So the body can accept 00:12:00.05\00:12:04.95 these things readily. And there is a trial going on in Wuhan, as well, using quercetin. 00:12:04.95\00:12:12.49 It had performed very well for SARS back in the earlier 2000s. And any of the other viruses 00:12:12.49\00:12:21.87 that have come up since then, they have found it has worked tremendously well, as well. 00:12:21.87\00:12:27.88 >> So, quercetin is available. You can buy it online, and -- >> 00:12:27.88\00:12:32.28 It's available. Yes, readily available, easily procured in health-food stores, online, 00:12:32.28\00:12:40.16 pharmacies, and so on. >> Same as the vitamin C. >> The same as the vitamin C. And I should say 00:12:40.16\00:12:44.09 that with the vitamin C, that when you're getting into the higher doses, what I recommend 00:12:44.09\00:12:49.20 is a vitamin C powder or crystals, because, typically, a teaspoon of this would equal 00:12:49.20\00:12:56.27 4,000 milligrams. So it's a lot easier than swallowing, you know, half a bottleful of pills. 00:12:56.27\00:13:01.68 >> Absolutely. >> Yeah. >> So, tell us about some other 00:13:01.68\00:13:07.08 supplementation that you can -- >> Yeah, so, there are other things that are very good. 00:13:07.08\00:13:12.82 There's a product that comes from broccoli, called sulforaphane, that's antiviral. 00:13:12.82\00:13:19.76 I use a compound called silver. So, it's a natural silver form. People have maybe heard of 00:13:19.76\00:13:26.53 colloidal silver. >> Mm-hmm. >> The form that I use is 00:13:26.53\00:13:31.24 monatomic. It's a little bit more advanced than colloidal. 00:13:31.24\00:13:34.24 It's a little more stable, but it's still very, very effective because it is antiviral, as 00:13:34.24\00:13:39.68 well. Zinc is very good -- proven antiviral properties. 00:13:39.68\00:13:44.85 We have another compound called N-acetylcysteine, or NAC -- N-A-C -- that has a proven 00:13:44.85\00:13:53.66 ability against viruses. And, also, once it's taken, it will build up antibodies very 00:13:53.66\00:13:59.77 quickly. It's shown to do that so that you have that protection 00:13:59.77\00:14:04.74 against that virus in the future. St. John's Wort is 00:14:04.74\00:14:12.25 another antiviral. There's just so many that God has given us that we can use. So, yeah, it 00:14:12.25\00:14:18.25 gives us hope. >> Yeah, quite a list that you've given us. So, zinc -- I'm thinking zinc 00:14:18.25\00:14:22.06 lozenges. Would they be good? >> Zinc lozenges are fine as 00:14:22.06\00:14:25.26 long as they're not loaded with sugar, so be careful about that. 00:14:25.26\00:14:29.36 >> Yes. >> Because sugar, as we mentioned earlier, is going to affect the immune system. 00:14:29.36\00:14:34.80 But, yeah, zinc, in a tablet, a capsule, a liquid, a lozenge -- any of those forms are very 00:14:34.80\00:14:42.41 useful. >> And it is toxic to the coronavirus, so it will kill 00:14:42.41\00:14:46.18 the coronavirus. Like, if you happen to be in contact with 00:14:46.18\00:14:51.42 someone, take a zinc lozenge or zinc supplementation, and that 00:14:51.42\00:14:55.22 can help you. >> Yep. >> Absolutely. >> So, Dr. Sloan, 00:14:55.22\00:14:58.69 are there any more supplements that you can recommend for us to use to build our immune systems? 00:14:58.69\00:15:05.10 >> Yes, there are a few others that I could mention. An herb that I've been using in 00:15:05.10\00:15:10.44 the past year or two is an herb called Andrographis. Andrographis is also very, very 00:15:10.44\00:15:16.31 good for the common cold. It's one of the best herbs I've 00:15:16.31\00:15:19.75 found. Great for viruses. And so that could be used 00:15:19.75\00:15:24.49 preventatively. >> Is it readily available? >> And it is readily available. >> Okay. 00:15:24.49\00:15:27.79 >> Yes. And, so, preventatively, that could be used, as well as 00:15:27.79\00:15:31.69 selenium. And selenium and zinc are two trace minerals that are 00:15:31.69\00:15:35.90 extremely deficient in our soils and in our food. And so we're finding that, along 00:15:35.90\00:15:41.60 with vitamin D, which I want to add in, as well, we're finding that many people in our 00:15:41.60\00:15:47.81 population are deficient in selenium and in zinc. And so having a supplement that 00:15:47.81\00:15:54.28 also corrects a deficiency, but has antiviral properties and also immune-boosting properties 00:15:54.28\00:16:01.86 is of great benefit. And, last but not least, vitamin D -- 00:16:01.86\00:16:08.73 vitamin D3, to be exact -- is a form of vitamin D that we can take supplementally, if we can't 00:16:08.73\00:16:17.81 get the sun. And, of course, through our Canadian winters, we don't get that much sun. 00:16:17.81\00:16:23.28 And so with the lack of vitamin D that we find in our populations, because of that, 00:16:23.28\00:16:32.22 taking some extra, supplementally, also really supports the immune system and 00:16:32.22\00:16:38.23 helps to prevent these illnesses. >> Mm-hmm. 00:16:38.23\00:16:41.26 So, say you have a patient who comes to you, and they are having a high fever. 00:16:41.26\00:16:46.70 So, what's the purpose of that high fever? What's the body 00:16:46.70\00:16:50.71 doing? >> Well, unlike what maybe most people think about fever, fever is actually a good 00:16:50.71\00:16:58.65 thing. Fever is the body's -- The body uses fever to actually help to burn out these toxins, 00:16:58.65\00:17:07.32 these pathogens in our bodies. And so it is just the natural process in response to that. 00:17:07.32\00:17:13.40 >> But you don't want to get overheated. >> Yeah, so, I think 00:17:13.40\00:17:18.10 the worry is, in a lot of people, that the fever will go too high and create problems 00:17:18.10\00:17:26.37 that way. By and large, if a fever can be allowed to run its course and more or less keep it 00:17:26.37\00:17:34.42 from going way too high, which you can use a cold compress to the head and the back of the 00:17:34.42\00:17:43.43 neck and so on, the treatments that I recommend will likely cause the fever to dissipate 00:17:43.43\00:17:48.23 pretty quickly, because in addition to the body's burning this out, the remedies and the 00:17:48.23\00:17:53.17 treatments that you're taking are working at it, as well, so it speeds up the process 00:17:53.17\00:17:59.21 considerably. So, Dr. Sloan, I have a bit of a question, maybe it's just an insight; when I see 00:17:59.21\00:18:05.75 what's happening in the world with this COVID-19 virus, I think of the disciples of Jesus 00:18:05.75\00:18:11.49 in the boat panicking in Mark chapter 4 and the Bible says that in the midst of this 00:18:11.49\00:18:17.89 life-threatening storm the the disciples asked Jesus in verse 38, "Master do you not 00:18:17.89\00:18:24.90 that we are all about to die?" And sometimes we're kind of like this -- we don't believe 00:18:24.90\00:18:33.17 that that God even cares. And some say, "Well, God doesn't know what I'm going 00:18:33.17\00:18:38.61 through, He just sits up in heaven while we're forced to suffer down here on this 00:18:38.61\00:18:43.45 earth. The ravages of this virus that we're going through with so 00:18:43.45\00:18:49.06 much pain and suffering, being separated from one another." But the truth is the Bible tells us 00:18:49.06\00:18:53.23 that God is with us. God suffers and He is suffering with us now. 00:18:53.23\00:18:58.83 He suffered when Jesus died on the cross in Isaiah chapter 53 and Hebrews chapter 13 verse 00:18:58.83\00:19:05.37 5 says, "Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you." So, as a Christian, Dr. Sloan, 00:19:05.37\00:19:11.45 what kind of word of encouragement can you give us from the Word of God, 00:19:11.45\00:19:16.35 from the Bible. 00:19:16.35\00:19:17.52 >> Well, I'm -- You know, I really love Isaiah 40:31. 00:19:17.59\00:19:22.42 >> Mm-hmm. It's so encouraging to know that we are a child of 00:19:34.94\00:19:41.01 God, that we are a child of the King. We're going to listen to a song that is a spiritual song, a 00:19:41.01\00:19:47.88 very encouraging song that we know, with assurance, that, being a child of the King, we 00:19:47.88\00:19:56.02 can trust God to take care of us.
