We are on the road today, and we are visiting the Church in the Valley in 00:00:43.07\00:00:46.31 Langley, British Columbia. You know, every now and then you hear the story of someone 00:00:46.31\00:00:51.21 who does something extraordinary. >> Mm-hmm. 00:00:51.21\00:00:53.78 >> And today we're going to be talking to a man right here in 00:00:53.78\00:00:57.89 British Columbia who decided to take a risk and put his life on the line to save the life of his 00:00:57.89\00:01:04.16 friend. >> His name is Michael Dauncey, and his friend's name is Florencio Ancheta, 00:01:04.16\00:01:09.23 also known to his friends as "June." But before we interview 00:01:09.23\00:01:14.17 them, we are going to show you their story. Take a look at 00:01:14.17\00:01:19.04 this. い >> We had found out about your condition, 00:01:19.04\00:01:30.35 that your kidney was failing and that you were on dialysis, that you lost your father 00:01:30.35\00:01:37.06 at age 35 in the Philippines to kidney failure. >> Yeah. 00:01:37.06\00:01:40.66 >> And then your brother, also living in the Philippines, died at age 42 of kidney failure. 00:01:40.66\00:01:46.70 >> Yeah. >> And you also have this same issue. 00:01:46.70\00:01:51.57 And you are going to have to find a kidney donor. >> Yeah. 00:01:51.57\00:01:57.21 >> Several times you thought that you had found someone to 00:01:57.21\00:02:02.55 donate. >> I just pray to God that one day someone give me a 00:02:02.55\00:02:08.19 kidney. >> And then something happened. It was Thanksgiving 2016. We get a call from May 00:02:08.19\00:02:16.43 that you were in the hospital. You were in and out of 00:02:16.43\00:02:20.24 consciousness. You were having a very difficult time. And I looked at you there, 00:02:20.24\00:02:24.17 and I just realized that someone had to do something. At our church we sometimes 00:02:24.17\00:02:30.58 rent out our facility to the blood bank. I signed up and I 00:02:30.58\00:02:35.52 gave my blood. And then a couple weeks later I received a card in the mail, and it told my blood 00:02:35.52\00:02:40.36 type, O-positive. >> Oh. >> And then it wasn't long after 00:02:40.36\00:02:44.29 we were at your house. You were preparing some food in the kitchen, and I heard 00:02:44.29\00:02:50.80 you and May and Marci talking, and Marci, my wife, she said, "Oh, I'll give my kidney to 00:02:50.80\00:02:56.60 June." And so she asked what your blood type was. 00:02:56.60\00:03:00.11 And then May said O-positive. And when I heard that, I just 00:03:00.11\00:03:06.85 froze. For about three months, I guess you could say I was a 00:03:06.85\00:03:10.89 little bit scared, but then the Holy Spirit kept on working on 00:03:10.89\00:03:14.69 me. I didn't want to get your hopes up again. So, I didn't even tell you that I was getting 00:03:14.69\00:03:17.93 tested, and it had been about a year. I remember I was driving back from Alberta, and I 00:03:17.93\00:03:21.66 remember them phoning me and saying, "It's official. You can 00:03:21.66\00:03:25.93 do it if you would like." >> After my dialysis that day, I went out to my garden. 00:03:25.93\00:03:31.14 And then do some weeding and planting some garlic, and then all of a sudden, the 00:03:31.14\00:03:36.71 phone ring. St. Paul told me that "One more test and then 00:03:36.71\00:03:40.58 you're good to go," they said to me. They didn't even say who was 00:03:40.58\00:03:44.92 the donor. I said to God, "If this go through, you're really 00:03:44.92\00:03:51.56 there for me," I said to God. And then Marci told me, "Can we have a Sabbath lunch in 00:03:51.56\00:03:56.50 the house, just the Dauncey family and the Ancheta family?" So, when we came here 00:03:56.50\00:04:04.81 that lunchtime, I'm waiting for you to stop talking. >> [ 00:04:04.81\00:04:10.48 Chuckles ] >> And then when you stop talking, "I am your donor." 00:04:10.48\00:04:16.92 And then I got a shock. I said, "What?" So, I'm very, very 00:04:16.92\00:04:25.86 grateful until I live. >> Mm-hmm. I have never been good 00:04:25.86\00:04:32.60 at being a bystander, you know? If there's something I can do to help, I want to help, you know? 00:04:32.60\00:04:39.87 And that's what Jesus would do. I just want to be more like Him, and I know that He would give. 00:04:39.87\00:04:48.85 Jesus, He wouldn't even have to think twice about it. He would 00:04:48.85\00:04:53.49 just give it, and That's the kind of person I want to be. I 00:04:53.49\00:04:56.66 would do it again. If I had to do it over again, I would do it again because it's so worth it. 00:04:56.66\00:05:02.66 >> That's why, in my life, I never question God. Everything I 00:05:02.66\00:05:11.41 pray to Him, He give it to me, especially the kidney that you gave me a second life. 00:05:11.41\00:05:20.35 I'm very grateful on that. >> You know, it's a blessing to see 00:05:20.35\00:05:25.85 you, Florencio, functioning once again. You know, I love seeing you and your family at church. 00:05:25.85\00:05:30.66 And it just gives me a good feeling to know that I've made a difference in someone's life. 00:05:30.66\00:05:36.93 You know, June, I think maybe God gave us two kidneys so that 00:05:36.93\00:05:42.50 we could share one with someone who needs one. >> I think so. >> 00:05:42.50\00:05:45.91 Maybe. >> Maybe. >> There's many ways that we can give. 00:05:45.91\00:05:49.54 And I believe that giving is just a part of us, our Christian 00:05:49.54\00:05:53.62 lifestyles. You know, the Bible talks about giving in many, many 00:05:53.62\00:05:57.39 places. And sometimes it doesn't come naturally to give, but when 00:05:57.39\00:06:02.79 we help people, when we give and we know that it's going to make a difference somewhere, it does 00:06:02.79\00:06:06.96 feel good. And so I just encourage you today to listen to 00:06:06.96\00:06:10.40 the Holy Spirit when He asks you to give. 00:06:10.40\00:06:15.10 >> You know, Jesus once said that greater love has no man 00:06:15.70\00:06:19.87 than this, that he lay down his life for the life of his friend. 00:06:19.87\00:06:24.91 And so what Pastor Dauncey did by giving his kidney, by having 00:06:24.95\00:06:32.42 invasive surgery and giving his kidney for the life of his friend, was an incredible act of 00:06:32.42\00:06:39.59 love. And so today with us here at "It Is Written Canada," we have Pastor Dauncey and 00:06:39.59\00:06:45.70 his friend Florencio Ancheta, who received his kidney, and now they're both with us 00:06:45.70\00:06:52.37 and we want to talk to them about their story. 00:06:52.37\00:06:55.04 >> Pastor Dauncey, what initially inspired you 00:06:55.08\00:06:58.55 or what made you decide to donate your kidney? 00:06:58.55\00:07:02.52 >> Well, it was quite a process. It wasn't something that was 00:07:02.52\00:07:05.79 a quick decision by any means. It all started 00:07:05.79\00:07:09.32 with my wife, actually. She said, "Well, our friend 00:07:09.32\00:07:13.96 June needs a kidney. I'll give him my kidney." 00:07:13.96\00:07:16.70 So, I got to thinking, "Wow, that's quite a statement." But she didn't have the right 00:07:16.73\00:07:22.80 blood type. It wasn't possible. So, that's kind of what got me 00:07:22.80\00:07:26.78 thinking about it. >> Mm-hmm. >> And when I initially thought 00:07:26.78\00:07:32.11 maybe I should do something, at first I was a little bit 00:07:32.11\00:07:36.18 worried. What happened was, I found out I had the same blood type, and then what happened 00:07:36.18\00:07:40.26 was I just kind of got a little bit scared. I was a little bit 00:07:40.26\00:07:44.29 scared. So, I just didn't do anything with the information 00:07:44.29\00:07:47.20 for quite a while, like, a few months. And then, you know, the Holy Spirit kind of 00:07:47.20\00:07:50.73 is working on me and saying, "You should at least explore 00:07:50.73\00:07:55.80 this idea." And so it took a long time. It took about a year worth of testing, and during 00:07:55.80\00:08:01.24 that process I had a lot of time to think about this. >> Yeah. 00:08:01.24\00:08:04.51 >> And so, it was a long, hard decision. >> I'm sure they asked 00:08:04.51\00:08:10.65 you or told you, you know, like, "Are you sure you're going to go through with this?" 00:08:10.65\00:08:15.02 and told you about the risks. Can you tell us any risks that 00:08:15.02\00:08:20.00 could have... >> Well, I don't think they really bring that up too much, actually. 00:08:20.00\00:08:23.10 [ Laughter ] I don't remember them kind of, but they were 00:08:23.10\00:08:27.60 very -- St. Paul's in Vancouver. They were just really amazing to 00:08:27.60\00:08:31.01 work with. >> Mm-hmm. >> They said at any point, you know, 00:08:31.01\00:08:35.24 this is a voluntary thing. And they were not forceful in any 00:08:35.24\00:08:38.71 way. >> Right. >> This was 100% my decision. At any point I 00:08:38.71\00:08:43.18 could back out and just walk away. You know, I definitely talked to a lot of people. 00:08:43.18\00:08:47.02 I got a lot of people's advice on whether I should do this or 00:08:47.02\00:08:52.09 not. And several said, "No, don't do it." >> Yeah, yeah. 00:08:52.09\00:08:55.40 >> But I have to make decisions for myself. And I have to answer 00:08:55.40\00:09:00.14 to what I feel God calling me to do. >> Exactly. 00:09:00.14\00:09:02.80 >> And I felt I needed to be obedient because I felt the Holy 00:09:02.80\00:09:06.31 Spirit was moving me in this direction. >> Yes, yes. So, here 00:09:06.31\00:09:10.15 you are. You're a pastor of a church, Church in the Valley here in British Columbia, in 00:09:10.15\00:09:15.15 Langley. And, you know, what does that do for you as a pastor? How did that 00:09:15.15\00:09:21.56 affect your congregation? >> Yeah, I remember, June, they had 00:09:21.56\00:09:28.46 a special prayer for you during the process. No one knew what I was doing. I kept it quiet while 00:09:28.46\00:09:33.44 I was getting checked up. It took a year, like I said. And we had a special prayer for 00:09:33.44\00:09:37.81 June in the congregation. And it's kind of interesting because 00:09:37.81\00:09:42.61 we weren't really saying, "Someone come forward, please." We were just sharing 00:09:42.61\00:09:46.01 what he was going through. And so we were in this together as a 00:09:46.01\00:09:52.62 congregation. We have about 600 attending. And this was a family moment. This was a church-family 00:09:52.62\00:09:58.56 moment. And so, as a pastor, you know, we preach, we teach. What do I do as a pastor? 00:09:58.56\00:10:06.80 I encourage people to give. >> Yes. >> I encourage people to 00:10:06.80\00:10:09.94 serve. >> Yes. >> It's part of who I am and want others to do 00:10:09.94\00:10:14.58 this. And then it's like, "Do I really practice what I preach?" 00:10:14.58\00:10:17.58 You know? Here's the test. >> Yes. 00:10:17.58\00:10:20.38 >> And I've had people, more than one, say to me, "What you 00:10:20.38\00:10:27.99 did to June by giving your kidney was the most powerful sermon you've ever preached." 00:10:27.99\00:10:32.79 So, the old adage is true. Actions speak louder than words. 00:10:32.79\00:10:36.10 >> Yes. >> And I decided I wasn't going to be a bystander. 00:10:36.10\00:10:40.40 I figured out that I could do something to help, and I wanted to do that. >> Yeah. 00:10:40.40\00:10:45.94 >> God put that in my heart. >> So, every time you, I mean, a person who's sort of a 00:10:45.94\00:10:49.34 bystander, watching someone else, what goes through your 00:10:49.34\00:10:53.98 mind? You're seeing your friend, he's going through pain. He's 00:10:53.98\00:11:00.82 suffering. What was it that -- was it the Holy Spirit prompting you? Did you have this feeling, 00:11:00.82\00:11:05.49 "Hey, I really have to do something here"? >> Well, when I 00:11:05.49\00:11:09.20 saw him in January of 2016, he was in rough shape. I got a 00:11:09.20\00:11:13.44 call. We're friends. We're friends. June and May's children are the same age as my children. 00:11:13.44\00:11:19.91 >> Okay. >> And so, we had a relationship, and May called my 00:11:19.91\00:11:22.58 wife, Marci, and said, "June's in the hospital. He's not doing 00:11:22.58\00:11:26.21 well." And so it was Thanksgiving, right? It was 00:11:26.21\00:11:29.62 Thanksgiving Day. We rushed over to the hospital. And you were looking really bad shape. 00:11:29.62\00:11:34.72 And it scared me. His eyes are rolling back in his head, and he 00:11:34.72\00:11:38.43 was going through things. And as I sat there, watched and prayed 00:11:38.43\00:11:43.43 and was there, the thought came over to me, "Someone has to do something." This is not good to 00:11:43.43\00:11:49.17 see him in this condition. I was scared. I thought maybe he could 00:11:49.17\00:11:52.54 die. It was scary. >> Yes. >> And so at that point I didn't 00:11:52.54\00:11:56.24 know it was going to be me. I just said, "Someone has to do 00:11:56.24\00:11:59.45 something." >> You're looking around. "Who's going to do something about this?" 00:11:59.45\00:12:02.12 >> But in the back of my head, I had a feeling that it might be 00:12:02.12\00:12:06.49 me. >> Right. >> But at that time, I had no idea, no idea. 00:12:06.49\00:12:10.66 >> Pastor Dauncey, you say that your decision to donate your kidney was 100% yours, 00:12:10.66\00:12:16.46 but then you also mentioned earlier on that your wife was 00:12:16.46\00:12:20.40 the one that said, "I'll donate my kidney to June." I was just 00:12:20.40\00:12:26.07 wondering, how did your children feel about this? Did you speak to them about it? >> I did. 00:12:26.07\00:12:30.75 I take that back. It isn't 100% my decision, because I do want 00:12:30.75\00:12:34.08 to include my family, and we did have a family meeting. And, you 00:12:34.08\00:12:39.65 know, I asked my children -- I have three kids -- and asked them how they felt about it 00:12:39.65\00:12:46.56 because there could be problems. There could be complications, 00:12:46.56\00:12:49.80 like whatever. Who knows, right? Whenever you do surgery, you 00:12:49.80\00:12:52.83 never know what's going to happen. And they were okay with it. They didn't really 00:12:52.83\00:12:57.94 fight me on it too much. And my parents, as well, and sister, 00:12:57.94\00:13:03.88 also good friends of the Ancheta family, and they also were were 00:13:03.88\00:13:09.48 onboard with it. And so, yeah. So I had the support of everyone 00:13:09.48\00:13:14.16 closest to me. >> Yes. >> And that's important, you know. 00:13:14.16\00:13:17.96 So, yeah, it was all of our decision together as a family. 00:13:17.96\00:13:23.77 >> Right. Yeah. >> But, June, can you tell us what your life was like before you got the 00:13:23.77\00:13:30.21 kidney from Pastor Dauncey? 00:13:30.21\00:13:32.41 >> Before, when I had that transplant, I'm going to the 00:13:32.44\00:13:40.12 hospital three times a week. 00:13:40.12\00:13:45.72 And it's kind of a little bit scary every day. I'm praying to 00:13:45.75\00:13:53.76 God that I'll get through to this. >> Mm-hmm. >> And then now 00:13:53.76\00:13:59.07 I get Pastor Dauncey's kidney, I feel much better now. >> Mm-hmm. 00:13:59.07\00:14:04.67 >> So, what kind of medication were you taking at that time? >> That time, I got tons of 00:14:04.67\00:14:10.61 medicine I take. >> Yeah. How much was it? >> It's like 13 00:14:10.61\00:14:17.65 different kind of medicine -- blood pressure, potassium, you name it. So, but now I only take 00:14:17.65\00:14:30.93 1.5 milligram... >> Okay. >> ...since I got this kidney 00:14:30.93\00:14:36.00 transplant. >> Just one little tablet. >> Yeah, one little 00:14:36.00\00:14:40.81 tablet. >> Wow. >> And then they cut up again because last week 00:14:40.81\00:14:45.95 St. Paul called me again that they said, "You're feeling 00:14:45.95\00:14:50.65 better. So, you have to cut down to 1.5 milligram." That's what 00:14:50.65\00:14:55.72 they said. >> Nice. >> So, June, at the time that Pastor Dauncey 00:14:55.72\00:15:00.13 mentioned that you were really sick at that Thanksgiving and they came to visit you 00:15:00.13\00:15:03.97 in the hospital and you were very concerned about June, at 00:15:03.97\00:15:10.07 that time, were you on dialysis? >> Yeah. >> At that time, okay. 00:15:10.07\00:15:14.68 >> At that time, I'm in peritoneal dialysis at that 00:15:14.68\00:15:18.61 time. That was my blood pressure going high, going down. I never -- I don't know what's 00:15:18.61\00:15:26.62 happened that time, right? So, I just fell down on the floor. 00:15:26.62\00:15:31.06 And then my wife is kind of worrying me because I cannot 00:15:31.06\00:15:36.36 recall that time because I don't know what happened 'cause I'm in 00:15:36.36\00:15:41.10 the blur. So, I didn't know that May, my wife, called the ambulance but is kind 00:15:41.10\00:15:48.54 of panicking. At the same time, she called my friend Marci, 00:15:48.54\00:15:58.29 Pastor Dauncey's wife. >> Wife, okay. >> And then, by the time 00:15:58.29\00:16:03.16 we get in the hospital with this paramedic, these two couples, they're already there, waiting 00:16:03.16\00:16:11.97 for us. So, I don't know what happened that time. 00:16:11.97\00:16:17.04 It's really kind of scary because my wife is crying. "He doesn't know what he's 00:16:17.04\00:16:22.08 doing." It's like, you know. And then my son is there. 00:16:22.08\00:16:27.85 He was talking on the phone with 911. >> Wow. 00:16:27.85\00:16:32.05 >> Yeah. >> So, Pastor Dauncey, you and Marci got there 00:16:32.05\00:16:35.59 before the ambulance and were waiting for them. >> We got there as soon as we 00:16:35.59\00:16:39.63 could. I mean, you hear your friend's in trouble, and you 00:16:39.63\00:16:43.13 just want to go and reach out, right, and be there for them. >> 00:16:43.13\00:16:46.77 Yeah, exactly. >> Yeah. >> So, June, once you found out that 00:16:46.77\00:16:52.61 Pastor Dauncey was gonna give you his kidney, how did you feel 00:16:52.61\00:16:56.54 at that moment? >> Well, what happened that time is this story. His mother told my wife 00:16:56.54\00:17:04.05 that can we have a potluck Sabbath lunch in their house? I 00:17:04.05\00:17:12.09 said, "Okay." I said to them. So, we have Thanksgiving Sabbath lunch in their house. 00:17:12.09\00:17:21.34 But is keeping going around and waiting for him to stop talking. Keeping around the table, 00:17:21.34\00:17:28.04 like this, talking and talking because we're having a toast. >> 00:17:28.04\00:17:32.75 I'm a pastor. I talk a lot. >> "Pastor Dauncey family and Ancheta family, can we have a 00:17:32.75\00:17:39.02 toast?" he said to me. Talking, talking and talking. He doesn't 00:17:39.02\00:17:43.79 stop talking because I have to tell him, tell him again that I 00:17:43.79\00:17:48.93 have a donor now. So, when he stop talking, and then he's in my back, behind me. 00:17:48.93\00:17:53.34 He is hugging my back like this. "I am your donor," he said to me, and then I get shocked. 00:17:53.34\00:18:02.31 >> Yeah. >> I stop. >> Yeah. 00:18:02.31\00:18:04.95 >> And my wife is crying, and his mom is crying. The same time 00:18:04.95\00:18:12.75 you're laughing. >> Because you're so happy. >> Show again the one can of kidney -- "This 00:18:12.75\00:18:18.83 is my kidney. I give it to you." >> We had a can of kidney beans 00:18:18.83\00:18:22.20 there. >> Kidney beans. He's joking again. So, that time I'm 00:18:22.20\00:18:31.44 so speechless, and I'm so blessed because of him. >> Yeah. 00:18:31.44\00:18:35.08 >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And I said to myself, 00:18:35.08\00:18:41.52 "This is my good friend." I said to myself. And then it came to 00:18:41.52\00:18:47.92 my mind that the Holy Spirit is working for me. >> Yeah. 00:18:47.92\00:18:53.16 >> That time. >> Yeah. >> And every single day, 00:18:53.16\00:19:00.04 talking to Him, He gave it to me. >> Mm-hmm. 00:19:00.04\00:19:05.47 >> I never, I never complain every day, even though I had 00:19:05.47\00:19:11.08 dialysis. I never complained. I just go home, eat a little bit, and go out in the backyard. 00:19:11.08\00:19:18.55 And then that's my life that time. Now, because I got the 00:19:18.55\00:19:25.29 kidney, I can do much better now. >> Mm-hmm. >> So, you were 00:19:25.29\00:19:30.30 saying the Holy Spirit was working for you, and He was working on Pastor Dauncey's 00:19:30.30\00:19:35.74 heart and speaking to him. That must've been quite an intense 00:19:35.74\00:19:42.71 pressure and moment and conversation that was going on. How were you thinking 00:19:42.71\00:19:47.35 about this? Like, what if it didn't work? What if... 00:19:47.35\00:19:51.82 How many kinds of "what ifs" were there? >> Yeah, you know. 00:19:51.82\00:19:57.39 That was the big question for me. What if I do this, 00:19:57.39\00:20:00.00 and it doesn't work and his body rejects it? And how am I 00:20:00.00\00:20:03.47 going to feel, right? But then if I didn't try it, he would be 00:20:03.47\00:20:10.64 -- there would be no chance. Now, one thing you didn't mention was the fact that you 00:20:10.64\00:20:15.31 had thought you had two other donors. Or is it three, even? 00:20:15.31\00:20:18.38 >> Oh, yeah, yeah, three. >> Three other donors were lined up 00:20:18.38\00:20:22.75 before I did this, and they all fell through, whether it was for 00:20:22.75\00:20:26.32 health reasons or they backed out or whatever it was. And that's why I didn't tell him 00:20:26.32\00:20:29.62 for the whole time. I didn't want to get his hopes up again, but there was three. 00:20:29.62\00:20:34.10 And people even came while I was being checked out. People came 00:20:34.10\00:20:38.83 along. I thought, "Oh, maybe this will be taken care of," the selfish part of me. 00:20:38.83\00:20:43.44 But no. They all fell through, and I'm glad 00:20:43.44\00:20:46.91 I started the process early because they all fell through. And then I was next in line, 00:20:46.91\00:20:51.21 and I was ready to go, because I've been working on this for so 00:20:51.21\00:20:57.05 long. He had three other fall through. And what kind of feeling? Think about the 00:20:57.05\00:21:01.12 emotions there. You're up here. >> Yes. >> And then falls 00:21:01.12\00:21:03.89 through. Three times! And so I'm so glad that I was able. 00:21:03.89\00:21:09.53 You know, I remember the day like it was yesterday, coming back from Alberta and 00:21:09.53\00:21:13.00 on the phone. I was at Burman doing a master's degree, and 00:21:13.00\00:21:17.01 they called me and said it's official. "You can donate if you 00:21:17.01\00:21:20.61 are willing." I was like, "Wow." So, yeah. >> So, you're thinking 00:21:20.61\00:21:24.61 beyond it. Say you go into the surgery. It doesn't work, but on 00:21:24.61\00:21:29.35 the other hand, the Holy Spirit's speaking to you. What if you don't do it, right? 00:21:29.35\00:21:35.82 So, which is the greater discouragement? What if you never did it at all? 00:21:35.82\00:21:42.23 >> Exactly. >> Then what do you have, right? >> Right, and, you 00:21:42.23\00:21:45.43 know, there would probably be regrets. And what if I could have helped? >> So, you're a 00:21:45.43\00:21:50.74 pastor. What Bible verse, or how was God speaking to you through 00:21:50.74\00:21:55.08 His work? >> You know what? It was really, I think, the Bible, 00:21:55.08\00:21:59.08 the Word of God, that put this decision over the edge. You know, Luke 6:31 says 00:21:59.08\00:22:05.75 "Do unto others what you would want them to do to you." >> Yes. 00:22:05.75\00:22:08.02 >> And I'm just thinking if I was in June's shoes, I would want someone to come 00:22:08.02\00:22:13.06 along and give me their kidney. I mean, it sounds selfish, but 00:22:13.06\00:22:16.53 no, I would. I would want someone to do something. >> Of 00:22:16.53\00:22:19.60 course. >> And then I got to thinking, "Why not me?" >> Why 00:22:19.60\00:22:22.00 not me? >> Why not me? Why not? You know? And so that's really 00:22:22.00\00:22:28.01 -- that Bible verse just, that was the one that did it for me. 00:22:28.01\00:22:32.01 God, Jesus is saying that to my soul, is saying, you know, "Do what you would want done to 00:22:32.01\00:22:39.59 you." >> Yeah. >> And someone's got 00:22:39.59\00:22:42.92 to do something. Might as well be me. >> Yes, yeah. 00:22:42.92\00:22:46.09 >> Yeah. >> And so, June, you mentioned that your life 00:22:46.09\00:22:49.73 has changed so much now. You are only taking one little tablet, 00:22:49.73\00:22:54.30 and you took 13 tablets before the time. You were going 00:22:54.30\00:22:57.97 to dialysis three times a week. And before that it was like four hours all the time, 00:22:57.97\00:23:04.28 constantly when you were doing peritoneal dialysis. >> Yeah. 00:23:04.28\00:23:07.82 >> And so this has been just a whole life-changing -- not just 00:23:07.82\00:23:12.72 life-changing but lifesaving experience, right? >> Yeah. >> So, Pastor Dauncey, 00:23:12.72\00:23:16.19 how do you feel? Because it's been more than a year now. 00:23:16.19\00:23:19.79 How are you feeling today? >> I feel great. I feel like I have 00:23:19.79\00:23:25.20 two kidneys. I don't know the difference. You know, I play ice 00:23:25.20\00:23:29.10 hockey regularly. I play pickleball regular. I run four or five times a week, 6 00:23:29.10\00:23:33.71 kilometers, on the weekends, 10 kilometers. So, I'm more active than ever, and I'm just -- our 00:23:33.71\00:23:40.62 bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made. The fact that I can do this and not feel any 00:23:40.62\00:23:46.55 different, it's amazing. It's so rewarding. It's so rewarding to 00:23:46.55\00:23:51.96 be a living donor. >> Yes. >> Number one, living donors' 00:23:51.96\00:23:55.43 organs last longer than ones from deceased bodies. >> Oh, 00:23:55.43\00:23:59.77 really? >> Yes. And so that was also another positive point. 00:23:59.77\00:24:03.64 >> That is. >> But I remember they kept me in recovery so long 00:24:03.64\00:24:08.44 because I was having issues. I'd never been admitted to a hospital before this. 00:24:08.44\00:24:11.85 >> Right. >> So they're having -- I didn't know much -- I was 00:24:11.85\00:24:14.55 having issues with the meds. I was having sleep apnea, and they 00:24:14.55\00:24:18.19 didn't like that. So, they kept me there for, like, six hours in 00:24:18.19\00:24:21.19 the recovery room. So, I was there when he came in after the surgery, and I saw this bag 00:24:21.19\00:24:26.66 there next to his bed, and I knew immediately that it was 00:24:26.66\00:24:31.07 working. It doesn't take any time. You put a kidney into someone that doesn't have an 00:24:31.07\00:24:35.74 organ, and bam, it's working. And there's just this feeling of reward that comes over. 00:24:35.74\00:24:42.08 This is a rewarding experience. I'm helping someone out, and I can see the difference. 00:24:42.08\00:24:46.55 I'm not dead. I'm alive. I can see the difference I'm making in 00:24:46.55\00:24:49.78 someone's life. >> That is incredible. >> Yeah. >> I mean, 00:24:49.78\00:24:53.52 you know, usually parts of a body, giving, donating, the person is deceased already. 00:24:53.52\00:24:58.86 Now you can see this. You've given a part of your body and you continue to live. 00:24:58.86\00:25:03.97 >> We have a relationship. >> You're thriving. >> Yeah. 00:25:03.97\00:25:06.87 >> We see each other at church every week. >> And he has a part 00:25:06.87\00:25:10.57 of you inside of him. That is incredible. >> So, if he starts 00:25:10.57\00:25:13.58 acting a little weird, you'll know why. >> You know where that 00:25:13.58\00:25:16.18 came from. [ Laughter ] Incredible, incredible. 00:25:16.18\00:25:20.32 Do you have any last remarks that you would like to share? >> Well, yeah, I think 00:25:20.32\00:25:25.85 what I would like to share is just if there is someone out there that is in a position 00:25:25.85\00:25:32.83 where they can help someone, whether it's physically or spiritually, mentally, 00:25:32.83\00:25:38.10 otherwise, whatever it is, I would just encourage you to do 00:25:38.10\00:25:41.97 it. >> Yes. >> There might be someone out there right now 00:25:41.97\00:25:44.71 wondering if they should donate an organ to help someone. And I would just recommend them 00:25:44.71\00:25:50.15 to do it. >> Exactly. >> It's been a life-changing 00:25:50.15\00:25:53.31 experience for both of us, and it's been nothing but positive. 00:25:53.31\00:26:00.12 And I just think that God has designed us to give and there's something that happens to us 00:26:00.12\00:26:07.40 when we give. It really is... It really is a wonderful feeling to 00:26:07.40\00:26:12.13 give and to be able to help someone to really save their life. It didn't really come out 00:26:12.13\00:26:18.77 here, but during that process of dialysis, it's not a cakewalk. 00:26:18.77\00:26:24.11 I mean, you'd get sad. You'd get depressed. Let's be honest. 00:26:24.11\00:26:29.45 So, you are totally helping someone have a new life. >> Yes. 00:26:29.45\00:26:35.39 >> And if you can do that, then I recommend you to do that because it will save a life. 00:26:35.39\00:26:41.43 And it's been wonderful. >> Yeah. Well, Michael and June, 00:26:41.43\00:26:45.87 thank you very much for coming and sharing this story with us -- very inspirational. 00:26:45.87\00:26:52.81 And I'm sure that everyone who has been listening to your story 00:26:52.81\00:26:58.25 was really touched by it. It really touched me personally. So, thank you so much. 00:26:58.25\00:27:02.22 >> Amen. That's what we want. We want people to be touched 00:27:02.22\00:27:04.72 by the story. >> And we're alive. >> You are. 00:27:04.72\00:27:08.12 >> Yeah! [ Laughter ] >> You betcha. 00:27:08.12\00:27:12.49 >> You know, friends, Jesus said that "By this shall all men know that you are my disciples 00:27:12.49\00:27:18.40 if you love one another." So, He was giving us the credentials 00:27:18.40\00:27:23.91 for Christianity. And clearly illustrated in the story of Pastor Dauncey and his friend 00:27:23.91\00:27:29.21 June, we can see the love of Jesus. So, as we close off today, let's just bow our heads 00:27:29.21\00:27:35.82 for a word of prayer. Father in heaven, I thank you so much for the inspirational story 00:27:35.82\00:27:42.32 that we could hear and listen to and see of how Pastor Dauncey 00:27:42.32\00:27:50.10 was prepared to be prompted by your Holy Spirit and to listen to your Holy Spirit 00:27:50.10\00:27:55.10 and by doing that saved the life of his friend June. I thank you for the inspiration 00:27:55.10\00:28:00.74 that it gives to each one of us and help us to listen to your 00:28:00.74\00:28:05.38 spirit, as well, and as we read your word, Lord, to follow that you will give us the strength 00:28:05.38\00:28:11.82 and the promptings of your Holy Spirit to do what you ask us to 00:28:11.82\00:28:16.22 do. We pray this in Jesus' name. >> Amen. >> Amen. 00:28:16.22\00:28:19.59 >> So, thank you for joining us, friends, on "It Is Written 00:28:19.59\00:28:23.26 Canada."
