¤ ¤ 00:00:00.53\00:00:11.37 ¤ >> Dear friend, thank you so 00:00:11.37\00:00:18.48 much for watching "It Is Written Canada." 00:00:18.48\00:00:21.15 I am joined in studio today by Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:00:21.15\00:00:25.69 Thank you, Dr. Nedley, for being here again today. >> Thank you. 00:00:25.75\00:00:28.26 It's great to be here. >> Now, Dr. Nedley, we've talked a number of times about the 00:00:28.26\00:00:33.43 different things that you have happening in your life. Very excited about your books. 00:00:33.43\00:00:38.53 I've actually been able to read a number of your books -- "Proof 00:00:38.53\00:00:41.80 Positive," "The Lost Art of Thinking," "Depression: The Way Out," and "Optimizing Your 00:00:41.80\00:00:47.08 Brain." Dr. Nedley, you're also an internal-medicine doctor with specialization in G.I. but also 00:00:47.08\00:00:54.72 in the brain, and we talked a little bit the last time. Maybe expand a little bit about 00:00:54.72\00:01:00.82 how those two things are so closely related. 00:01:00.82\00:01:04.73 >> It's interesting that we have people that come to our -- 00:01:04.79\00:01:08.50 You know, we have a Depression and Anxiety Recovery Program, 00:01:08.50\00:01:11.30 and we have so many that come with G.I. issues. 00:01:11.30\00:01:13.64 And, you know, anxiety can cause you to, you know, have nausea. It can cause you to have 00:01:13.70\00:01:22.21 abdominal pain after eating. And, you know, one of the issues that I tend to see is a lot of 00:01:22.21\00:01:29.88 anxiety-related abdominal pain. And the patient will often say to me, "Dr. Nedley, the reason 00:01:29.88\00:01:37.29 why I'm having anxiety is because of my pain. If you would 00:01:37.29\00:01:42.10 take care of my pain, the anxiety would go away." And then 00:01:42.10\00:01:45.33 I'll ask them a question. "Well, what things help your pain?" 00:01:45.33\00:01:48.64 "Well, Xanax helps my pain. Lorazepam helps my pain. Valium 00:01:48.64\00:01:55.21 helps my pain. Clonazepam helps my pain." And, of course, those 00:01:55.21\00:01:58.85 are benzos. Those are not doing anything to the G.I. tract. They're actually alleviating 00:01:58.85\00:02:02.95 anxiety, and so that's kind of proof positive that this is not 00:02:02.95\00:02:10.79 just a G.I. issue. It's a brain issue. And so, often, they're coming to us for anxiety-related 00:02:10.79\00:02:16.63 abdominal pain through our Anxiety Recovery Program, and, as a result of getting on much 00:02:16.63\00:02:21.90 better choices than benzos, they're able to have their pain completely go away, their 00:02:21.90\00:02:28.64 anxiety is relived, and they're also benzo-free, as well. So, it's very much an honor and 00:02:28.64\00:02:33.55 a privilege to be able to help these patients that have had pain for so many years and so 00:02:33.55\00:02:38.59 many problems and solve them. >> And we've been in the midst of a series, "Optimizing Your 00:02:38.59\00:02:45.29 Brain," optimizing brain chemistry, and the benefits of that are far-reaching. 00:02:45.29\00:02:50.70 We're gonna come back to that, but I want to talk about -- You said you offer some 00:02:50.70\00:02:55.34 programs. Talk to me. Where are these programs, and 00:02:55.34\00:02:57.91 how might somebody learn about them and what are some of the programs you're offering? 00:02:57.91\00:03:01.71 >> Okay. Well, we have a program called Depression and Anxiety 00:03:01.71\00:03:07.05 Recovery Program. It's a residential program where they do the first 10 or 11 days with 00:03:07.05\00:03:11.95 us. Mostly we do it at Weimar Institute, although we are starting to expand on the 00:03:11.95\00:03:16.96 East Coast, and our plan is, within a year or so, we might actually have programs right 00:03:16.96\00:03:22.36 here in Canada that are being run. You know, interestingly, 00:03:22.36\00:03:26.70 we've never had a program at Weimar where we haven't had 00:03:26.70\00:03:31.21 Canadians there. Every single program, we have Canadians that are there, and that's why we 00:03:31.21\00:03:36.11 know there would be a great interest if we could actually start a program here in Canada. 00:03:36.11\00:03:40.62 The program is 20 weeks, but you do the first 10 to 11 days with us, and then we supervise it 00:03:40.62\00:03:45.89 throughout the rest of the 20 weeks in their home setting, and it's a program to not just 00:03:45.89\00:03:52.23 control depression and anxiety but to completely but to completely eradicate it. 00:03:52.23\00:03:56.53 And we have found out that mental illness can indeed be 00:03:56.53\00:04:01.27 eradicated. The world thinks that we just have to kind of alter its course because it 00:04:01.27\00:04:07.34 can't be cured. Nature magazine said the way we're treating depression and anxiety today, 00:04:07.34\00:04:12.48 there's more likely a chance you'll be cured from cancer than from depression and anxiety, 00:04:12.48\00:04:17.92 because these medications have their limitations and they're not really cure type of drugs. 00:04:17.92\00:04:24.16 But once we got to the underlying cause and can treat the brain chemistry in a natural 00:04:24.16\00:04:29.90 way, which is what you're trying to emphasize by these programs, what a difference it makes, and 00:04:29.90\00:04:36.27 so it's actually -- The most enjoyable thing I do is to help 00:04:36.27\00:04:41.08 people that are treatment-resistant depression and anxiety have it eradicated 00:04:41.08\00:04:47.12 in less than 20 weeks. >> And we've talked about this before in some of our previous 00:04:47.12\00:04:52.45 programs, and to our viewer, Dr. Nedley and I did an entire series called "Depression: The 00:04:52.45\00:04:56.62 Way Out." If you'd like to get that program, you can go to 00:04:56.62\00:04:59.39 YouTube -- youtube.com/iiwcanada -- or you can call our office -- 00:04:59.39\00:05:08.70 905-404-6510 -- and you can get that series of programs, but, Dr. Nedley, let's talk about the 00:05:08.70\00:05:16.88 effectiveness of your in-residence program. First let's talk about the 00:05:16.88\00:05:23.05 effectiveness of medications, and you've given me the statistic before. How effective 00:05:23.05\00:05:26.79 are medications in treating depression and anxiety? >> In real-world clinical settings, 00:05:26.79\00:05:31.96 they're effective about 27% of the time. Now, they can improve symptoms maybe 55%, 60%, 00:05:31.96\00:05:38.80 some drug-company studies show maybe 70%, but by improving, that means you go from severe 00:05:38.80\00:05:46.27 depression down to still severe depression but not as severe as it was before -- maybe going 00:05:46.27\00:05:52.91 from a 27 to a 22. But that's not really a response rate. 00:05:52.91\00:05:57.92 We're looking for response rates where the depression scores go to at least less than half, and 00:05:57.92\00:06:05.16 medications just don't have that ability except in a smaller percentage of cases. 00:06:05.16\00:06:13.23 Even in those cases where they do improve it, there's other things besides medicines that 00:06:13.23\00:06:17.61 are having a role to play, and one of the issues with medicine -- it gets into brain 00:06:17.61\00:06:21.74 chemistry. One of the issues is, although they can improve mood 00:06:21.74\00:06:27.45 and crying spells -- you know, women particularly like the SSRIs, particularly if they're 00:06:27.45\00:06:32.35 undermethylators that we talked about earlier -- a genetic issue -- because their crying 00:06:32.35\00:06:37.26 spells go away, but they feel more numb to life. In other words, things that they 00:06:37.26\00:06:44.27 should be getting emotional about and intervening in, they just feel blah and more flat, 00:06:44.27\00:06:51.71 and, as a result, their husband might be gambling away their retirement, but it's like, 00:06:51.71\00:06:57.41 "Who cares?" And then, after it's all gone, it's like, "Wow! 00:06:57.41\00:07:01.95 Why didn't I do something about that?" or "Why didn't I try to get him help or whatever?" 00:07:01.95\00:07:07.36 And so that "I don't care" attitude produces its consequences, and then it also 00:07:07.36\00:07:13.23 worsens impulsivity, and so it improves mood while worsening impulsivity and causing an 00:07:13.23\00:07:19.13 "I don't care" attitude. If we're really correcting the brain chemistry in the 00:07:19.13\00:07:23.71 natural, healthiest ways, we're gonna improve everything. We're not gonna have some bad 00:07:23.71\00:07:29.01 effects and some good effects, and that's why, of course, these things have to be prescribed by 00:07:29.01\00:07:33.58 doctors, because we're always having to weigh benefits and risks, and is it too risky to 00:07:33.58\00:07:38.72 utilize these drugs? In addition, because they worsen impulsivity, they actually have 00:07:38.72\00:07:44.23 black-box warnings that increase the risk of suicide, and so, you know, as a doctor, sometimes 00:07:44.23\00:07:49.53 I've utilized these medicines. I'm not talking against them carte blanche, but I am saying 00:07:49.53\00:07:54.60 there are far better approaches for treating the common mental illnesses that we have today, 00:07:54.60\00:08:00.71 and they can produce beautiful side effects and only positive 00:08:00.71\00:08:05.98 effects. >> And the effectiveness -- and we're gonna touch on a few last things about 00:08:05.98\00:08:12.15 your program -- but the program there that you offer at Weimar, the in-residence program, and 00:08:12.15\00:08:15.72 that is also gonna be looking to be offered on the East Coast and then up here in Canada -- what 00:08:15.72\00:08:20.33 kind of improvements are you seeing there? What kind of 00:08:20.33\00:08:23.67 percentages of individuals are being helped? >> About 99% experience improvement and a 00:08:23.67\00:08:30.04 response rate of about 95%, and that means less than 50% from what their score was coming in, 00:08:30.04\00:08:38.85 and that's just the 10-day results. Now, if we talk about the 20-week results, they're 00:08:38.85\00:08:43.69 even better than that, so within two weeks of going home, the results are even better. 00:08:43.69\00:08:49.06 And so, in fact, that's why it's getting a lot of press and there's been a lot of 00:08:49.06\00:08:55.00 publication of it, because we finally have a way of treating depression and anxiety that can 00:08:55.00\00:09:01.74 eradicate it and eliminate it. >> That is so exciting, and, Dr. Nedley, if somebody wanted 00:09:01.74\00:09:06.51 to learn about that program -- when the next program is offered, how to get to that 00:09:06.51\00:09:10.71 program -- where would they find that information? >> Depressionrecovery.com or 00:09:10.71\00:09:15.38 depressionthewayout.com would be a great way to do this. I also can give the number for 00:09:15.38\00:09:21.59 our nurse case manager. In fact, they can hook up if we have the Canadian program by the 00:09:21.59\00:09:26.39 time you're watching this. They would know about that and they'd be able to hook you up 00:09:26.39\00:09:31.00 for whatever program. But our nurse case manager's number is 580-226-8007, and she 00:09:31.00\00:09:38.81 can deal with the East Coast program, West Coast, Canadian, and we're also starting a 00:09:38.81\00:09:43.31 program in New Zealand and Australia. I don't know if your 00:09:43.31\00:09:46.21 program is watched in New Zealand and Australia. >> It is. 00:09:46.21\00:09:48.62 It is. >> And so, hopefully, we'll have many sites, eventually, in the next 10 years 00:09:48.62\00:09:56.66 so that there'll be more access to people who need the program. >> Well, Dr. Nedley, we could 00:09:56.66\00:10:02.76 talk a long time about that. You and I have shared -- There have been a number of our 00:10:02.76\00:10:07.80 own viewers who had made the decision to come to the in-residence program and have 00:10:07.80\00:10:12.11 seen phenomenal results. The programs that we did together, 00:10:12.11\00:10:15.28 "Depression: The Way Out," are the most watched programs that "It Is Written Canada" has 00:10:15.28\00:10:19.98 experienced, and it is a phenomenal thing to hear people say things like, "There was no 00:10:19.98\00:10:25.19 light at the end of the tunnel, but today I see that there's hope," and you read about 00:10:25.19\00:10:30.89 individuals who just happened -- and I don't believe in just 00:10:30.89\00:10:35.70 happening. I believe there is providence that God led someone to flip the channel and they 00:10:35.70\00:10:42.50 talk about how that day they had made a decision that they were going to commit suicide, but 00:10:42.50\00:10:49.08 this transformed their thinking. So, thank you for sharing about 00:10:49.08\00:10:52.68 the program. So, Dr. Nedley, we've talked about genetics and that genetics -- just because 00:10:52.68\00:10:58.49 you've been dealt a bad deck doesn't mean -- or a bad hand, rather -- doesn't mean that you 00:10:58.49\00:11:03.86 are stricken with that for the rest of your life. You can 00:11:03.86\00:11:07.96 really experience change. But let's talk about beyond genes. 00:11:07.96\00:11:12.20 Are there -- There are hormonal issues that sometimes happen when we talk about the brain not 00:11:12.20\00:11:19.64 functioning properly. Let's talk about that a little bit. 00:11:19.64\00:11:23.65 What's happening there? How are genetics related to the 00:11:23.65\00:11:27.32 hormones? What's happening there? >> Okay. Well, premenstrual dysphoria, or 00:11:27.32\00:11:33.05 sometimes it's called PMS or premenstrual syndrome -- this is a hormonally related depression. 00:11:33.05\00:11:39.16 The woman's feeling good, and the ovulation comes, and when the progesterone kicks in, 00:11:39.16\00:11:45.37 they're sensitive to the progesterone, and their mood 00:11:45.37\00:11:49.47 sours. We've had individuals that have come to our program where their families can tell 00:11:49.47\00:11:54.44 the moment that they ovulate because there's such a difference in their mood and 00:11:54.44\00:12:01.18 personality when that happens, and their irritability factor goes up. So, this also -- people 00:12:01.18\00:12:06.65 who are prone to PMS also tend to be prone to postpartum depression, and so whenever 00:12:06.65\00:12:14.30 there's hormonal changes, they have a tendency to have this significant, overwhelming 00:12:14.30\00:12:21.27 depression set in. And it turns out they are being triggered by a bad gene that they have. 00:12:21.27\00:12:27.28 It's actually their ability to handle metals that sets this off, and that could be a genetic 00:12:27.28\00:12:35.02 issue. Some of us can handle metals more so than others, and 00:12:35.02\00:12:39.82 we need to have certain trace minerals that are metals, like zinc and those sorts of things. 00:12:39.82\00:12:46.03 But if we're not able to handle particularly copper and some of these other metals too well and 00:12:46.03\00:12:51.80 carry them, the free copper levels go up, and when that happens, our tyrosine, which is 00:12:51.80\00:12:58.44 supposed to be balanced and turning into norepinephrine and 00:12:58.44\00:13:02.88 dopamine -- Just a little bit of background -- norepinephrine is what provides our memory and 00:13:02.88\00:13:07.68 focus and energy, and dopamine is what produces our interests and enjoyment in life. 00:13:07.68\00:13:13.46 But when there's too much copper, it'll drive it into too high a norepinephrine level and 00:13:13.46\00:13:20.43 too low a dopamine level, and if our norepinephrine level gets too high, it's very stressful, 00:13:20.43\00:13:27.67 and we become very irritable. And these are people that have a lot of sensitivities that can be 00:13:27.67\00:13:36.18 sensitive to sights and to sounds and to also be sensitive 00:13:36.18\00:13:41.42 to metals. They won't be able to wear cheap jewelry, for instance, because of the metal 00:13:41.42\00:13:47.46 sensitivities, and they'll tend to be more prone to PMS. Fortunately, that can be treated 00:13:47.46\00:13:53.63 through natural means. A lot of people think, "Well, wait a 00:13:53.63\00:13:58.20 minute. I have to just take these SSRIs," 'cause that's 00:13:58.20\00:14:01.67 often how it's -- You know, they'll go to the psychiatrist, and they're putting them on 00:14:01.67\00:14:06.01 antidepressants that plug those serotonin channels. And, yeah, 00:14:06.01\00:14:09.38 it can help it a little bit, but it's not gonna really eradicate the PMS. It just kind of takes 00:14:09.38\00:14:13.78 the edge off of it. But we can actually eradicate the PMS by bringing that copper 00:14:13.78\00:14:19.25 level down through bringing zinc levels up and B6 levels up. And when zinc and B6 go up, 00:14:19.25\00:14:27.76 copper levels can be handled much better, and the person can actually have the whole 00:14:27.76\00:14:33.64 hormonal-depression issue eradicated. >> Well, that would 00:14:33.64\00:14:38.91 be, I think, very exciting news to a number of our viewers. Over 60% of our viewers are 00:14:38.91\00:14:44.31 women, and so let's talk a little bit about this. How would, then, someone help 00:14:44.31\00:14:49.82 bring that copper level down and those zinc levels up and bring 00:14:49.82\00:14:55.36 balance? What would an individual need to do? >> Well, there are some dietary 00:14:55.36\00:14:59.69 things. Fortunately, zinc is not something that you can get toxic 00:14:59.69\00:15:04.70 in very much. Copper is. Now, we need small amounts of 00:15:04.70\00:15:08.50 copper, but we don't need the amounts of copper that these hormonally related-depression 00:15:08.50\00:15:13.91 women have. And so we can actually bring it down by 00:15:13.91\00:15:20.02 high-zinc foods. Peanuts are a high-zinc food. Sesame seeds are actually at the top of the list 00:15:20.02\00:15:27.69 as far as zinc is concerned. And some of the seeds like pumpkin seeds, those type of 00:15:27.69\00:15:32.49 things, can make a difference Now, some individuals,we might actually recommend, because 00:15:32.49\00:15:38.03 their copper levels are so high, their free copper levels, that they get out of zinc supplement. 00:15:38.03\00:15:43.07 But a little cautionary note -- just going out and buying zinc supplements, if we bring the 00:15:43.07\00:15:49.18 copper level down too quick, the person will actually get even more anxious because it's 00:15:49.18\00:15:54.85 like drug withdrawal. And when your body's used to copper levels being this high 00:15:54.85\00:15:59.59 and they come down too quick, you can actually think you're getting worse by taking the 00:15:59.59\00:16:04.79 zinc. And so that's why we like to know where their copper 00:16:04.79\00:16:09.33 levels are at and give them small amounts of zinc over time and then build up on that zinc, 00:16:09.33\00:16:14.80 and it's something that might take weeks to correct that way, but that way the person doesn't 00:16:14.80\00:16:20.31 get into the problems of the rapid copper changes in their 00:16:20.31\00:16:24.45 bloodstream. >> Before an individual that is not at an extremely high copper level -- 00:16:24.45\00:16:32.05 that individual can eat some more peanuts and some more sesame seeds and, over time, 00:16:32.05\00:16:38.93 actually see that copper come down and find more balance in their hormonal activity? >> 00:16:38.93\00:16:46.84 That's right, and then more B6. B6 works together to be able to increase what we call 00:16:46.84\00:16:50.37 ceruloplasma, which is something that the copper can bind onto. And these people genetically 00:16:50.37\00:16:57.38 have low ceruloplasma levels in relationship to the copper, and so these would be foods like 00:16:57.38\00:17:04.19 sweet red bell peppers are good sources of B6. And that can also 00:17:04.19\00:17:11.53 help them, as well. >> You know, and I've said this before, Dr. Nedley, and I don't 00:17:11.53\00:17:16.20 mean to make a joke out of it, but I always like talking to you about the problems. 00:17:16.20\00:17:20.24 The problems seem to involve eating good, tasty food. And so someone who is listening 00:17:20.24\00:17:28.51 and hearing this and saying, "You know, I think I do have hormonal-related depression," 00:17:28.51\00:17:33.52 they can begin adding these foods into their diet that will 00:17:33.52\00:17:39.32 help in that area. Are there any other nutritional factors or lifestyle factors that can help 00:17:39.32\00:17:45.63 in this hormonal-related depression that then once an individual's depressed, their 00:17:45.63\00:17:50.57 mind isn't working properly, and the mind's not working properly has multiple effects on their 00:17:50.57\00:17:55.10 life. Are there other nutritional or lifestyle factors that they can address? 00:17:55.10\00:18:00.94 >> There are. Soy, for instance, helps this condition, as well. 00:18:00.94\00:18:04.95 That's another nutritional factor. For several reasons, 00:18:04.95\00:18:08.75 it's also higher in tryptophan. And getting enough tryptophan 00:18:08.75\00:18:13.25 can also help. Light therapy has been shown to be very beneficial in hormonally related 00:18:13.25\00:18:18.23 depression. Now, with the light therapy, normally we recommend it in the morning, which we 00:18:18.23\00:18:22.80 still do in hormonally related depression to help reset the circadian rhythm, but this would 00:18:22.80\00:18:27.97 be a medical-grade light box that the women also use for just a small exposure, maybe 15 00:18:27.97\00:18:33.94 minutes, at about 7:00 p.m. every night, and that can also really help this hormonally 00:18:33.94\00:18:40.08 related depression. And, of course, physical exercise helps virtually all of these different 00:18:40.08\00:18:45.29 forms, and physical exercise can be helpful, as well. >> Now, we've talked a lot about 00:18:45.29\00:18:51.29 women and hormonally related depression. Can men have 00:18:51.29\00:18:57.83 depression that's related to hormones? >> They can from low testosterone, and, of course, 00:18:57.83\00:19:02.80 this is one of the big things that some people are 00:19:02.80\00:19:07.71 capitalizing on. They're recommending all men measure their testosterone levels, and 00:19:07.71\00:19:11.98 if you have low T, they're wanting to give you testosterone shots or testosterone creams or 00:19:11.98\00:19:17.39 these type of things. But testosterone shots have their 00:19:17.39\00:19:21.69 side effects. They actually make more estrogen, can become more 00:19:21.69\00:19:25.96 irritable. It's far better for our bodies to produce more testosterone because what the 00:19:25.96\00:19:31.73 body produces by the brain telling it to produce it. And, 00:19:31.73\00:19:35.60 by the way, our hormone-control center in the brain for both female hormones and male 00:19:35.60\00:19:40.88 hormones is right here in the brain, so if we fix the brain, we actually get better 00:19:40.88\00:19:46.65 testosterone output. And so the interesting thing is light therapy helps men double their 00:19:46.65\00:19:54.32 testosterone levels. Just an hour of medical-grade light therapy in the morning will more 00:19:54.32\00:20:00.13 than double their testosterone, will help their libido, will help their energy, their focus, 00:20:00.13\00:20:09.54 and make them have more positive masculine traits. And that's pretty good, actually, instead 00:20:09.54\00:20:16.48 of having to take these hormone shots. The other thing that men are not aware of and they're not 00:20:16.48\00:20:21.12 being told is if they are having too frequent orgasmic activity, that drives down the 00:20:21.12\00:20:28.92 testosterone levels, or if it's supersensory orgasmic activity, and so men need to slow down on 00:20:28.92\00:20:36.00 that area. It takes seven days after that event for your testosterone to spike, and so if 00:20:36.00\00:20:42.84 you wait longer for intimacy and those type of things, you will actually be able to increase 00:20:42.84\00:20:48.84 your testosterone. If you go two weeks, it increases it even 00:20:48.84\00:20:54.02 more, and so slowing down on what some men think they need every day actually will help 00:20:54.02\00:21:00.26 their brain in a lot of different ways. >> That's very fascinating. And so, Dr. Nedley, 00:21:00.26\00:21:05.96 these are all related to optimal brain function, and let's come 00:21:05.96\00:21:10.47 back around. What about those that are having some learning disabilities, poor readers? 00:21:10.47\00:21:15.00 Any help there? >> Absolutely, yes. The learning disabilities 00:21:15.00\00:21:20.91 tend to be related to a pyrrole disorder. These are people that 00:21:20.91\00:21:24.18 really don't like to read. They've been advanced in school even though they've been near 00:21:24.18\00:21:29.72 the bottom of the class. They have poor stress control. And they're also sensitive to a 00:21:29.72\00:21:36.66 lot of things. These also tend to be where your autistic people 00:21:36.66\00:21:42.80 are at, as well, and those people actually get better with antioxidants, and they also 00:21:42.80\00:21:49.74 improve with zinc and B6, so what we said earlier about hormonally related depression 00:21:49.74\00:21:56.14 also helps this type of depression or anxiety, which is the pyrrole disorder style. >> 00:21:56.14\00:22:02.35 Yes. >> And the amazing thing is once we give them the antioxidants they need and the 00:22:02.35\00:22:07.69 amount of zinc and B6, they will start to get better within a week. You know, the hormonally 00:22:07.69\00:22:13.29 related ones -- that takes maybe four to eight weeks if we're gonna balance it out. 00:22:13.29\00:22:17.53 But with the learning disability, they'll notice that their brain starts to improve 00:22:17.53\00:22:22.60 within a week, and it'll have a very nice effect in about four weeks' time, and these are the 00:22:22.60\00:22:30.68 antioxidant. Minerals can also help, like selenium that is 00:22:30.68\00:22:34.42 present in whole grains. In fact, one of the problems with the gluten-free diet is 00:22:34.42\00:22:39.25 we're getting less selenium in the diet. And so we're seeing 00:22:39.25\00:22:44.49 sometimes more learning disabilities as a result of not enough selenium or these 00:22:44.49\00:22:50.10 antioxidants. >> And so what are some sources of antioxidants for someone who has a learning 00:22:50.10\00:22:56.91 disability or has a child with a learning disability and they want to increase those 00:22:56.91\00:23:00.88 antioxidants, the B6, the zinc? What are some sources? >> Actually, there's the top 00:23:00.88\00:23:07.12 five antioxidant fruits. Plums are number give. >> Okay. 00:23:07.12\00:23:12.72 >> And the rest are berries -- raspberries, blackberries, actually strawberries, and the 00:23:12.72\00:23:21.30 top of the list is blueberries -- top antioxidant fruit. 00:23:21.30\00:23:26.23 And the top vegetables -- your broccoli is up there in the top. Spinach is there at the top. 00:23:26.23\00:23:35.28 Kale is number two. And number one is garlic -- the number-one 00:23:35.28\00:23:42.75 antioxidant vegetable. So, as we load the patient up with antioxidants and, at the 00:23:42.75\00:23:48.26 same time, we give them enough zinc and B6 to take care of what we call their pyrrole disorder, 00:23:48.26\00:23:54.83 we can see that brain start to normalize. >> And this is so 00:23:54.83\00:24:01.54 encouraging, Dr. Nedley. We've got three real categories here. 00:24:01.54\00:24:05.54 There are those women that have hormonally related depression or stress and anxiety. 00:24:05.54\00:24:11.85 There is hope for them, and that hope is found in some nutritional and lifestyle 00:24:11.85\00:24:18.95 adjustments -- getting some light therapy, getting some exercise, then initially getting 00:24:18.95\00:24:25.43 some B6 and zinc, and where can we get those B6 and the zinc, 00:24:25.43\00:24:29.73 just as a review? >> Well, sweet red bell peppers are a great source, and then your seeds are 00:24:29.73\00:24:34.84 gonna have a lot of the zinc, and so this would be hemp seeds. Peanuts actually are a pretty 00:24:34.84\00:24:40.98 good source. And sesame seeds are up there at the top. 00:24:40.98\00:24:44.85 >> And then for men, they can also have hormonally related depression, stress, and anxiety. 00:24:44.85\00:24:50.32 This is often due to low testosterone. That testosterone 00:24:50.32\00:24:55.19 can be addressed through light therapy. We didn't talk about any nutritional factors there. 00:24:55.19\00:25:01.43 Any nutritional factors on low testosterone? >> Well, walnuts 00:25:01.43\00:25:08.60 actually can help, flax, pecans. Blueberries actually can help with this some, as well. 00:25:08.60\00:25:15.28 >> And then, lastly, those that are suffering with learning disabilities, poor readers, can 00:25:15.28\00:25:21.98 find that help in also the nutritionally addressed issues of upping the antioxidants -- 00:25:21.98\00:25:28.42 your blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries -- as well as seeing the zinc and the 00:25:28.42\00:25:34.46 B6 increased, as well. >> Correct, and maybe some 00:25:34.46\00:25:38.03 selenium. >> And some selenium, which comes through grains. >> 00:25:38.03\00:25:41.50 Right. >> Dr. Nedley, we are almost out of time. In the last 00:25:41.50\00:25:46.91 minute, maybe just give a word of hope, a word of encouragement, to that 00:25:46.91\00:25:52.61 individual that really wants to see their brain chemistry optimized that they might have a 00:25:52.61\00:25:58.82 life to its fullest. >> Well, you're not stuck with the brain you're born with, nor the bad 00:25:58.82\00:26:04.19 genes that you might have inherited. We can actually turn off these bad genes through good 00:26:04.19\00:26:09.06 nutritional and lifestyle factors, and we can actually normalize brain chemistry 00:26:09.06\00:26:14.60 through natural means and produce what we call positive neuroplasticity, which can be a 00:26:14.60\00:26:22.18 launching pad for emotional health as well as intellectual 00:26:22.18\00:26:27.72 health. >> And, you know, Dr. Nedley, with that, we're going to have a prayer because that is 00:26:27.72\00:26:32.25 the desire of Jesus. The desire of Jesus is that we would be in 00:26:32.25\00:26:37.26 good health. >> That's right. >> Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we 00:26:37.26\00:26:41.00 thank you so much that You have made our bodies in such a way that You know and actually can 00:26:41.00\00:26:50.14 give us the instructions on how to best take care of them. Lord, please, change us and 00:26:50.14\00:26:55.68 transform us that we might be more like your Son Jesus. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. 00:26:55.68\00:27:02.98 >> Amen. >> Dear friend, we have been on a journey together 00:27:02.98\00:27:09.76 seeing how God has created our brains in such a way that they can be optimized when we take 00:27:09.76\00:27:16.77 care of them the way He has given us to take care of them. Now, I hope that you've enjoyed 00:27:16.77\00:27:22.67 these programs, and for today's offer, I will offer you a DVD of these three programs where you 00:27:22.67\00:27:28.71 can review what Dr. Nedley and I have talked about and you can experience optimized brain 00:27:28.71\00:27:35.38 chemistry.
