It's great to be with you again, Chris. 00:02:09.66\00:02:12.23 >> Now, just as a reminder to our audience, Dr. Nedley is an internal-medicine doctor. 00:02:12.23\00:02:17.83 He is an adjunct professor at Loma Linda University, and he is the author of four books -- 00:02:17.83\00:02:23.57 "Depression: The Way Out," "Proof Positive," "The Lost Art 00:02:23.57\00:02:28.18 of Thinking," and "Optimizing Your Brain." Now, Dr. Nedley, let's talk a little bit about 00:02:28.18\00:02:33.42 this because you're a specialist in internal medicine, and actually we know each other 00:02:33.42\00:02:38.25 pretty well. Your real specialty is in kind of the gut. Yet you've done a lot of work 00:02:38.25\00:02:44.36 on the brain. How are the gut and the brain connected? 00:02:44.36\00:02:47.76 And I know we could probably do multiple shows on that, but how are those two connected, and how 00:02:47.76\00:02:53.30 did you get into discovering things on the brain and mental 00:02:53.30\00:02:58.57 function? >> Well, it's a great question, Chris. 00:02:58.57\00:03:01.14 And actually if we were to scrape the nerves off of the 00:03:01.14\00:03:06.18 bowel at the time of surgery and just scrape them all off and 00:03:06.18\00:03:11.35 weigh them out, they would weigh four times as much as the entire 00:03:11.35\00:03:15.96 spinal cord. And so, there's quite a brain-G.I. connection. 00:03:15.96\00:03:21.86 And I notice that a lot in my field of gastroenterology. And 00:03:21.86\00:03:28.84 so, many of the difficult-to-treat G.I. diseases, like Crohn's Disease 00:03:28.84\00:03:34.81 or ulcerative colitis or irritable bowel syndrome, actually often are best treated 00:03:34.81\00:03:40.18 by treating the brain. And then the immune system can work a lot better, and the connections with 00:03:40.18\00:03:45.12 the G.I. tract can work a lot better. And so, for my bad G.I. patients, often I needed to 00:03:45.12\00:03:52.49 treat their brain, and then their G.I. problems cleared up. And of course their emotions 00:03:52.49\00:03:57.13 were also balanced, which was a win-win for everybody. >> And the interesting thing -- 00:03:57.13\00:04:01.34 and we're gonna get into this -- in treating their brain, often you have to treat what they're 00:04:01.34\00:04:06.71 eating, and so it's just this very interconnectivity in how the body functions. 00:04:06.71\00:04:11.95 >> Exactly. >> Now, Dr. Nedley, you are the president of Weimar 00:04:11.95\00:04:16.79 Institute. Why don't you talk a little bit about Weimar, what Weimar does, what's happening 00:04:16.79\00:04:21.89 there. I know our viewers would love to hear about it. >> Well, 00:04:21.89\00:04:25.99 a lot of exciting things happening at Weimar. In fact, we're churning out a lot of what 00:04:25.99\00:04:30.87 we call peer-review research. This is the top scientific literature research. 00:04:30.87\00:04:34.64 In fact, virtually all of our students, by the time they graduate, they will have 00:04:34.64\00:04:39.61 published a paper in a medical journal, even before they go to 00:04:39.61\00:04:44.41 medical school. And most doctors don't even publish. They might 00:04:44.41\00:04:48.65 have done studies, but it's not publishable studies. Most doctors don't even publish 00:04:48.65\00:04:53.22 their entire career. But by the time our students are going to medical school, they've 00:04:53.22\00:04:59.09 already presented at places like Harvard. In fact, this next 00:04:59.09\00:05:03.37 week, we have four students that are going to Harvard University and presenting studies that were 00:05:03.37\00:05:08.30 done at Weimar. And why the world is very interested in 00:05:08.30\00:05:13.21 Weimar's research is because we are finding out what we put into our body and what we do with our 00:05:13.21\00:05:19.08 body has so much more to do with our health than we previously thought. And Weimar is 00:05:19.08\00:05:24.92 discovering exactly how much those things play a role in certain disease entities, as 00:05:24.92\00:05:31.83 well as in certain health components, including emotional health. So, about two-thirds of 00:05:31.83\00:05:37.60 what we publish has to do with emotional health, things like depression, anxiety, 00:05:37.60\00:05:43.71 intellectual functions. And about a third of what we publish has to do with circulation, 00:05:43.71\00:05:50.58 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, those type of issues. >> Well, that is exciting, and 00:05:50.58\00:05:55.02 if somebody wanted to learn more about what's happening at Weimar Institute, where might 00:05:55.02\00:05:58.29 they find information? >> Weimar.edu will explain our programs there, and then if 00:05:58.29\00:06:04.06 you're wanting to come as a patient and get your physical body or your brain optimized, 00:06:04.06\00:06:11.93 newstart.org. >> That is fantastic. Now, Dr. Nedley, last 00:06:11.93\00:06:17.21 week we spent some time talking about optimizing our brain chemistry. We talked about the 00:06:17.21\00:06:24.38 issue of genetics, that the reality is, is that sometimes we feel -- and, actually, I joke 00:06:24.38\00:06:32.39 with my mom. I say, "When I was made, I think the bad genetics 00:06:32.39\00:06:37.33 of my dad and the bad genetics of my mom kind of wrapped up in one package, and out I came." 00:06:37.33\00:06:43.00 It's a little joke that we have, but what we were talking about, especially in the context of 00:06:43.00\00:06:48.54 brain function, is even if we're dealt a bad hand, so to speak, in our genes, number one, it's 00:06:48.54\00:06:56.24 not much different than the rest of the world, because everybody, especially in the brain, has 00:06:56.24\00:07:02.45 some kind of genetic mutation. Talk a little bit about that. 00:07:02.45\00:07:07.12 What's happening? What are we seeing with genes and people's brains and how brains are 00:07:07.12\00:07:12.36 functioning? >> Yeah, well, it's called "genetic entropy." Entropy means that over time, 00:07:12.36\00:07:16.73 things become more disorderly and disorganized, and flaws 00:07:16.73\00:07:21.40 develop. This is why we have to maintain cars, and we even have to maintain houses. 00:07:21.40\00:07:26.34 If we just let them sit, they tend to go into disarray. And the same is true, actually, 00:07:26.34\00:07:32.38 with our genetic code. And so, if we're a very healthy parent, we might pass along 150 00:07:32.38\00:07:39.05 new mutations to our child. If we're not a healthy parent, we're gonna pass along over 300 00:07:39.05\00:07:45.23 new mutations. So, actually, although you said it was a joke 00:07:45.23\00:07:49.43 with your mom and dad, there is some element of truth. You actually do have more 00:07:49.43\00:07:52.80 mutations than your mom or dad. And I have more than my mom or dad, and that's what we call 00:07:52.80\00:07:58.91 "genetic entropy." And so, these things can actually result in 00:07:58.91\00:08:04.31 us, when these bad genes interact with our environment, it can actually result in 00:08:04.31\00:08:11.65 diseases and in some unwanted personality and unwanted emotional traits at times. 00:08:11.65\00:08:16.02 >> And so, the last time we were together -- and if you missed last week's show, you can go to 00:08:16.02\00:08:23.03 YouTube.com/IIWCanada and there watch the archives of the 00:08:23.03\00:08:27.70 program. But, Dr. Nedley, you were talking about these characteristics, these traits of 00:08:27.70\00:08:35.18 individuals that are competitive, that are maybe a little obsessive and compulsive, 00:08:35.18\00:08:42.72 very driven individuals often are suffering from a genetic 00:08:42.72\00:08:49.36 mutation. What was that genetic mutation? What does it mean? How is it working in that 00:08:49.36\00:08:53.76 individual? >> Yeah, it's called "undermethylation," and so it 00:08:53.76\00:08:58.27 produces low serotonin activity and low dopamine activity. And so these individuals, in 00:08:58.27\00:09:04.27 addition to the traits that you mentioned, they tend to have 00:09:04.27\00:09:09.28 high libido. These are the people that may not be as faithful as people who are 00:09:09.28\00:09:15.35 normal methylators. And they also have a high tendency for addictions, as well. 00:09:15.35\00:09:19.95 Because they have this calm exterior and tense interior, they tend to reach for ways of 00:09:19.95\00:09:27.30 self-medicating. And so, this is why even those that are having 00:09:27.30\00:09:32.83 issues with addictions that can be solved, and their desire to self-medicate can go away once 00:09:32.83\00:09:38.37 we balance that brain chemistry. >> Okay. So, just as a little 00:09:38.37\00:09:42.81 bit more review on that, if you're listening to that, you're saying, "Yeah, I'm a very 00:09:42.81\00:09:47.88 competitive person" or "I'm suffering with addictions, and I really want my brain to work 00:09:47.88\00:09:52.42 more properly," there's actually hope, and that hope does not have to come in the form of 00:09:52.42\00:09:57.83 a pill. But actually three very practical suggestions, and we'll 00:09:57.83\00:10:01.00 see if I'm good at remembering them. >> Okay. 00:10:01.00\00:10:03.20 >> Light therapy, which getting a lot of sunshine. And even those of us in Canada, 00:10:03.20\00:10:07.64 trying to get out there in the summer and really absorbing that sun, getting in the sun. 00:10:07.64\00:10:12.31 But if you can't get the sun, there are actually light-therapy devices that can be used to get 00:10:12.31\00:10:17.61 that light that you need. >> Correct. >> Then, the second 00:10:17.61\00:10:21.85 thing is exercise. >> Yes. >> And using your classic line, 00:10:21.85\00:10:24.95 that "There's no such thing as bad weather. There's just bad 00:10:24.95\00:10:29.39 clothes." And so, we need to get out and exercise -- an hour of aerobic exercise a day. 00:10:29.39\00:10:34.36 >> Yes. >> And then the last thing you talked about is 00:10:34.36\00:10:37.30 getting a right level of Vitamin D and calcium and magnesium. Did 00:10:37.30\00:10:40.94 I get those? >> Correct. Yes, very good. All right, that brain's working. >> All right, 00:10:40.94\00:10:45.97 yeah, yeah, we're good. Now, and just as a review, in order for somebody to get the 00:10:45.97\00:10:50.55 right amount of Vitamin D and their calcium and magnesium, maybe just a few points to help 00:10:50.55\00:10:55.18 that person -- they can go to the show and review it -- but just a few points on how to get 00:10:55.18\00:10:59.79 enough Vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium. >> Well, you have to 00:10:59.79\00:11:03.99 get enough sun to be able to tan a little bit, and that'll tell us that they're making Vitamin 00:11:03.99\00:11:09.13 D. In the wintertime, you might actually have to take some Vitamin D supplements if you 00:11:09.13\00:11:14.17 didn't get enough in the summer to last you over. And then, with 00:11:14.17\00:11:18.94 calcium, those are gonna be your greens, soybeans. There are grains like amaranth 00:11:18.94\00:11:23.18 and quinoa that are high in it, figs, sesame seeds, and legumes. And then, on the magnesium side 00:11:23.18\00:11:31.15 of things, more of your seeds, like pumpkin seeds, flaxseed. Hempseeds are a good source, as 00:11:31.15\00:11:38.66 well, and your legumes also tend to be a good source of magnesium, as well. 00:11:38.66\00:11:44.40 >> And we've not spent a lot of time talking about this, but it sounds very much, as you're 00:11:44.40\00:11:47.67 talking about those things, a very plant-based or plant-strong diet is going to really resolve 00:11:47.67\00:11:54.78 a number of those issues. Am I hearing you correctly there? 00:11:54.78\00:11:57.75 >> That's correct, yes. >> Okay. Now, there are people on the 00:11:57.75\00:12:01.72 other side of the pole. We've talked about undermethylization 00:12:01.72\00:12:06.79 or undermethylating. What is the opposite problem that exists? 00:12:06.79\00:12:11.49 >> The opposite problem is overmethylation. >> Okay. 00:12:11.49\00:12:15.36 >> And with overmethylation, these people are not so much 00:12:15.36\00:12:20.70 into achieving. In fact, they tend not to do well in school with their GPA. But they tend to 00:12:20.70\00:12:27.81 be more naturally artistic. These are the ones that music comes very easy to them, and 00:12:27.81\00:12:35.18 they like the musical-artistic expressions, or art comes very 00:12:35.18\00:12:41.59 easy to them. They also, unlike the undermethylators that tend to be almost antisocial, the 00:12:41.59\00:12:47.73 overmethylators are naturally social people. In fact, it's 00:12:47.73\00:12:53.27 nice to have an overmethylator as a neighbor because they also tend to be more naturally caring 00:12:53.27\00:12:58.94 of others. They tend to be more naturally empathetic. And so, they're gonna be your 00:12:58.94\00:13:03.24 helpful neighbor. They're gonna want to make sure you're doing 00:13:03.24\00:13:07.32 okay. And they may be on the artistic side, as well. >> Okay. 00:13:07.32\00:13:11.89 So, now, let's talk a little bit about that. What is -- and let's 00:13:11.89\00:13:20.53 just start because there's a number of people that are saying, "That's me. 00:13:20.53\00:13:23.57 I'm that creative person. I love art. I'm the social butterfly, 00:13:23.57\00:13:28.20 but I really struggle as an underachiever." Let's talk about 00:13:28.20\00:13:35.61 creativity. What really is creativity? What's happening 00:13:35.61\00:13:39.61 with creativity? >> Well, you have to have the front part of your brain working to be 00:13:39.61\00:13:45.52 creative and empathetic, actually. And this is an important part of what makes us 00:13:45.52\00:13:51.43 a human being. If the frontal lobe gets strengthened, our creativity goes up, and our love 00:13:51.43\00:13:57.70 of learning goes up. Now, what is creativity? Creativity is 00:13:57.70\00:14:02.70 actually being completely original, meaning that there might be pieces of it that 00:14:02.70\00:14:09.18 others put together, but you're coming up with something that is completely original, as far as 00:14:09.18\00:14:14.68 the combination is concerned. And that combination is useful 00:14:14.68\00:14:18.72 to others. There's a lot of people that pride themselves in being creative in today's world, 00:14:18.72\00:14:24.09 but they're just bizarre. [ Both laugh ] They're not really being 00:14:24.09\00:14:27.60 useful to anybody, per se, by their bizarreness. But a creative person is going 00:14:27.60\00:14:33.47 to actually have that be useful to others. And this is why 00:14:33.47\00:14:39.41 creative people can be in the top echelons of society, because if you create something that is 00:14:39.41\00:14:46.28 useful to others and then put it into a manufacturing type of business, you can go from the 00:14:46.28\00:14:52.39 lowest socioeconomic status to the highest socioeconomic status in a matter of a few years. 00:14:52.39\00:14:57.53 And so, overmethylators can be wealthy individuals as a result of their artistic or creative 00:14:57.53\00:15:05.67 achievements. >> And so, now, somebody who is overmethylating 00:15:05.67\00:15:13.54 in this creative realm but really having achievement issues, a lot of times or -- I 00:15:13.54\00:15:20.95 don't want to say a lot. But those individuals are often put on medications to help them 00:15:20.95\00:15:25.92 in this area of underachieving and things like that. Let's talk 00:15:25.92\00:15:30.19 about that. What kind of medications are these individuals being put on, and 00:15:30.19\00:15:35.03 what's really happening when those medications are prescribed? >> Well, it's not 00:15:35.03\00:15:39.60 just the underachievement that tends to bother the overmethylators. It also tends 00:15:39.60\00:15:44.31 to be poor stress control. And these are people that under significant amounts of stress 00:15:44.31\00:15:49.98 can even kind of go into rapid speech, pressured speech, almost a little bit what we would call 00:15:49.98\00:15:55.62 "hypomania" or mania. They might be a little prone to bipolar, 00:15:55.62\00:16:01.42 for instance. And these individuals, when they present themselves with their stress and 00:16:01.42\00:16:09.36 the emotional issues that they tend to have, they are often put on what's called "SSRIs." 00:16:09.36\00:16:15.77 That is kind of your first-line antidepressant drug. But for an 00:16:15.77\00:16:22.14 overmethylator, if they're put on an SSRI, they're gonna get worse. And so, within a few 00:16:22.14\00:16:26.65 days, they're saying, "Doctor, my stress level is worse. I 00:16:26.65\00:16:31.22 can't take this." And that's because they actually don't need more help with their serotonin 00:16:31.22\00:16:38.06 activity. They've got plenty of it already. And that's why it's 00:16:38.06\00:16:42.86 important. You know, as a physician, I don't like the most common approach to emotional 00:16:42.86\00:16:50.47 problems, and that is, "Try this" and then "Try that." And so, they're tried on a lot 00:16:50.47\00:16:56.14 of things. I like to be able to know precisely what I'm dealing 00:16:56.14\00:17:00.12 with with the brain chemistry. And then I know right away an SSRI is going to actually make 00:17:00.12\00:17:05.29 this person worse. And so, then they might be put on yet another 00:17:05.29\00:17:09.86 SSRI and get worse. What's happening with the SSRI is it's 00:17:09.86\00:17:13.53 plugging up the serotonin reuptake inhibitors. They already have enough serotonin 00:17:13.53\00:17:18.30 activity, and so now it makes too much serotonin. So, now they're off the charts as far as 00:17:18.30\00:17:23.34 their anxiety. They can even get headaches and those type of issues, and it might even drive 00:17:23.34\00:17:28.84 them more into mania. And so, for those individuals, we don't need more serotonin 00:17:28.84\00:17:33.55 activity. We need better vacuum cleaners to be able to reuptake 00:17:33.55\00:17:38.62 that serotonin back into the neuron. And so, we treat them 00:17:38.62\00:17:42.56 differently. >> Okay. So, what can a person that's listening, watching right now, 00:17:42.56\00:17:48.00 saying, "You're describing me." How can they address this 00:17:48.00\00:17:54.54 overmethylating? >> Well, the best way of addressing it is getting plenty of folate. 00:17:54.54\00:17:58.97 Folate actually helps with the reuptake and helps with the 00:17:58.97\00:18:06.01 overmethylation. The other thing that they need is more choline. It turns out your artistic type 00:18:06.01\00:18:11.49 of individuals, one of the reasons why they tended not to do as well in school is because 00:18:11.49\00:18:17.23 the focus and concentration part of things were not there. >> 00:18:17.23\00:18:21.76 Okay. >> And so, we want to improve their focus and concentration, and that is 00:18:21.76\00:18:27.40 through choline. And so, things that augment our ability to make acetylcholine or get the 00:18:27.40\00:18:33.38 nutrients together to make choline will help their underachievement part of things, 00:18:33.38\00:18:39.21 and the folate will help their emotions. >> And now let's talk about this just a little bit, 00:18:39.21\00:18:44.09 then, because maybe an individual's saying, "Oh, but if I do these things, I'll be less 00:18:44.09\00:18:48.96 creative." Is that what's gonna happen? >> No, not true. That's the nice thing about 00:18:48.96\00:18:53.29 treating things naturally. Their creativity is still going to be 00:18:53.29\00:18:57.13 there. And their artistic ability is still going to be there. But now they're gonna be 00:18:57.13\00:19:02.60 able to be managed emotionally. It'll be far easier for them to manage their emotions. 00:19:02.60\00:19:07.51 And they're also going to actually improve overall their creativity because if you have a 00:19:07.51\00:19:13.01 creative side of you, and you can have focus and concentration, it's like, "Wow, 00:19:13.01\00:19:17.95 now we might be able to put our creative things into a manufacturing business and then 00:19:17.95\00:19:23.73 make more income as a result." So, once we balance their brains, we launch them for far 00:19:23.73\00:19:30.33 better success. >> So, let's talk about that folate and the 00:19:30.33\00:19:35.14 choline. And one of the things I appreciate so much in talking with you, Dr. Nedley, is you 00:19:35.14\00:19:38.64 don't tell people to pick up their purse and head down to the 00:19:38.64\00:19:43.81 supplement store. With the Vitamin D obviously there's sometimes that supplementation 00:19:43.81\00:19:48.22 is needed, but your solutions are always seemingly tasty solutions. And so, how might an 00:19:48.22\00:19:53.32 individual get more folate into their diet? >> Well, folate is going to be in plants. 00:19:53.32\00:19:58.99 There's a little bit in animal foods, a few micrograms, and you'd have to eat almost a whole 00:19:58.99\00:20:06.13 cow to get enough folate for how much you need in a day. >> Okay. 00:20:06.13\00:20:11.11 >> And so, this is where we want to emphasize certain plant 00:20:11.11\00:20:14.78 foods. So, the highest source of folate is actually black-eyed peas. Lentils are right up there 00:20:14.78\00:20:20.95 with it, as well. Okra is a very good source of folate. 00:20:20.95\00:20:25.02 And then your greens are going to be a good source of folate, 00:20:25.02\00:20:30.49 as well. And legumes are pretty good in it, as well. And this is 00:20:30.49\00:20:35.10 one of the reasons why for those that are overmethylators, we notice fairly quickly, probably 00:20:35.10\00:20:40.44 within two weeks, if they actually switch over to a plant-based diet that's gonna 00:20:40.44\00:20:46.21 have adequate folate and the adequate what we talked about earlier, choline -- choline and 00:20:46.21\00:20:52.88 betaine -- those individuals within two weeks of going vegetarian will notice a 00:20:52.88\00:21:00.12 dramatic improvement in their emotions. >> That is phenomenal. Now let's talk about that 00:21:00.12\00:21:02.92 choline. What are some sources of choline? 00:21:02.92\00:21:05.53 >> Okay, choline is going to be -- quinoa is actually the highest source of choline and 00:21:05.53\00:21:13.03 betaine combined. And your greens are also going to be great sources of choline 00:21:13.03\00:21:20.24 and betaine. So, mustard greens, spinach -- these types of foods 00:21:20.24\00:21:26.08 are going to be great for someone who's an overmethylator. >> You know, the interesting 00:21:26.08\00:21:31.19 thing is, is that some of the same foods that will help an undermethylator are the same 00:21:31.19\00:21:37.03 exact foods that help an overmethylator. >> Yeah, for 00:21:37.03\00:21:41.56 different reasons. >> For different reasons and for the different nutrients, which I 00:21:41.56\00:21:46.47 think the importance of what you're coming across and sharing is that this idea of a 00:21:46.47\00:21:53.38 plant-based diet is really gonna fulfill a lot of the nutrients that will actually help overcome 00:21:53.38\00:22:00.42 some of the genetic problems that you have. >> Exactly. Now, the one area that I should 00:22:00.42\00:22:05.15 mention where an overmethylator will notice a medicine actually helping -- and this is where I 00:22:05.15\00:22:11.73 kind of cringe -- because overmethylators, with their pressured speech and their 00:22:11.73\00:22:16.80 artistic ability, if the doctor prescribes them Xanax or Lorazepam or benzos, they'll 00:22:16.80\00:22:22.84 feel at peace with the world, and they'll say, "Ah, this is the way I'm supposed to feel. 00:22:22.84\00:22:28.98 I feel so much better. I don't have the stress. I don't have 00:22:28.98\00:22:33.95 the pressures anymore." But those benzos are gonna actually decrease their ability 00:22:33.95\00:22:38.35 to make GABA -- in fact, shut it down. And so, if they try to get 00:22:38.35\00:22:41.92 off these drugs, first, they'll need more and more over time. But if they try to get off it, 00:22:41.92\00:22:45.86 it's like ten times the anxiety they had before. And the natural 00:22:45.86\00:22:51.63 way of getting those benefits is actually switching over to a diet such as we've explained. 00:22:51.63\00:22:56.30 You won't get the buzz effect the first dose, like they do with the benzos, but within two 00:22:56.30\00:23:02.24 weeks, their emotions will be controlled as if they're on benzos, but now no frontal-lobe 00:23:02.24\00:23:08.75 suppression with the diet method. The benzos are gonna 00:23:08.75\00:23:13.22 make you feel better, but they're gonna actually decrease your artistic ability because 00:23:13.22\00:23:17.23 they're suppressing the frontal lobe. They're helping the anxiety part, but benzos are a 00:23:17.23\00:23:20.96 frontal-lobe suppressant. And so, these individuals, as they prepare to come to our 00:23:20.96\00:23:26.17 program, we actually put them on a regimen where they can start to wean their benzos. 00:23:26.17\00:23:31.34 And then, when they come to our program and get this better diet and all the other things that 00:23:31.34\00:23:36.64 help with overmethylation, they're able to much more easily get off their benzos and be 00:23:36.64\00:23:41.58 controlled. >> And so, that's interesting. You were talking 00:23:41.58\00:23:44.95 about it. So, there may be cases where individuals in consultation with their 00:23:44.95\00:23:51.13 physician, there may be individuals that need some type of medication initially. But in 00:23:51.13\00:23:55.76 this switch to a plant-based diet, where for an undermethylator, they're getting 00:23:55.76\00:24:00.67 that folate and the choline. For the overmethylator, they're getting the Vitamin D, the 00:24:00.67\00:24:04.81 calcium, and the magnesium -- >> Actually, the other way around. 00:24:04.81\00:24:09.51 >> Oh, I'm sorry. I flipped that. But so, somebody who's 00:24:09.51\00:24:14.08 overmethylating, getting their folate and their choline. >> 00:24:14.08\00:24:17.72 Correct. >> The undermethylator getting their Vitamin D, their calcium and magnesium, they can 00:24:17.72\00:24:23.69 actually see a weaning effect, and maybe somebody's even actually already on medication, 00:24:23.69\00:24:29.80 they can be weaned off those medications, and they will see just tremendous results from 00:24:29.80\00:24:35.84 this switch in their diet. >> Actually, yeah, they'll feel better off the medicines, given 00:24:35.84\00:24:42.14 enough time, than they ever did on the medicines. And of course 00:24:42.14\00:24:46.98 they won't have the side effects. >> And what -- at the end of this, how does this 00:24:46.98\00:24:51.92 affect the frontal lobe? How does this all bring things together so somebody can have 00:24:51.92\00:24:56.89 optimal brain function? >> Well, it actually augments it 00:24:56.89\00:25:01.20 significantly. Now, people with overmethylators, they do have 00:25:01.20\00:25:04.77 frontal lobes. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been able to be creative, and they wouldn't be 00:25:04.77\00:25:08.90 able to have empathy. But they have more selective benefits in their frontal lobe. 00:25:08.90\00:25:12.74 By treating the overmethylation, we now pick up the other areas of the frontal lobe that were 00:25:12.74\00:25:19.15 problematic, particularly the focus, the concentration, the 00:25:19.15\00:25:24.49 achieving part. And then, once they're able to focus and concentrate, that's the same 00:25:24.49\00:25:30.19 area of their brain that's utilized to manage distressing emotions. So, as we improve that 00:25:30.19\00:25:35.16 focus and concentration, they now are able to manage distressing emotions, plus have 00:25:35.16\00:25:41.04 the benefits of the genetic blessing that they've had, being able to be creative and also 00:25:41.04\00:25:48.41 having that more natural empathy. >> And, Dr. Nedley, in the last two minutes that we 00:25:48.41\00:25:54.05 have together here, one of the things I can't help but think of is I know for so many people, 00:25:54.05\00:26:00.69 when we talk about the area of spirituality -- reading their Bible, listening to a sermon, 00:26:00.69\00:26:06.36 listening to a Bible study, whatever it may be -- there's such great difficulty sometimes 00:26:06.36\00:26:11.87 in being able to focus. And as we talk about this optimizing your brain chemistry, 00:26:11.87\00:26:17.67 I can see so clearly that this helps that area of focus. >> 00:26:17.67\00:26:22.61 Absolutely. >> Maybe talk a little bit about what we've been talking about and how it helps 00:26:22.61\00:26:28.92 in that area of spiritual growth. >> Well, focus and concentration is key in order to 00:26:28.92\00:26:33.46 be able to grow spiritually. But, interestingly, as we improve the spiritual part of 00:26:33.46\00:26:38.46 our brain, which is the front part of our brain, it helps to balance our frontal lobe 00:26:38.46\00:26:44.33 significantly. And this is why anyone who wants to achieve 00:26:44.33\00:26:50.11 optimal brain chemistry, the spiritual can't be neglected. And this is an area 00:26:50.11\00:26:54.54 unfortunately in our society where we're neglecting it more 00:26:54.54\00:26:59.18 than ever before. And it's one of the reasons why we have more mental illness than ever before. 00:26:59.18\00:27:03.89 And so, having a congruent spirituality, being able to have a devotional life, where we're 00:27:03.89\00:27:10.93 centering in on some nice, abstract themes, like love and kindness and truth and 00:27:10.93\00:27:17.90 principles, those types of things are gonna actually enhance the front part of our 00:27:17.90\00:27:23.44 brain for both undermethylators, as well as overmethylators. >> And with that, Dr. Nedley, we 00:27:23.44\00:27:29.11 are out of time.
