But we also 00:03:53.86\00:03:58.57 understand, as we read through the Bible, that Jesus was interested in the health of the 00:03:58.57\00:04:03.57 whole person, certainly the health of their spirituality, but also their physical health, 00:04:03.57\00:04:08.61 their emotional health, so on and so forth. But let's just 00:04:08.61\00:04:12.65 talk -- You know, we're gonna spend a few programs talking about optimizing your brain. 00:04:12.65\00:04:18.42 Why is our brain health so important, not just to life in general, but in the context 00:04:18.42\00:04:26.59 of spirituality? >> Well, our brain is really who we are. 00:04:26.59\00:04:30.80 You know, when someone says, "Who are you?," they're really asking about your brain. 00:04:30.80\00:04:37.61 Yes, we do have eyes and ears and nose and hands, and those things are kind of a part of us, 00:04:37.61\00:04:43.61 but who we are is our brain, and the wonderful thing about the brain is that it can 00:04:43.61\00:04:49.52 change, and it can change in very positive ways. Unfortunately, it can change 00:04:49.52\00:04:54.36 in negative ways, as well, but our goal is to take whatever brain is there and to optimize 00:04:54.36\00:05:01.76 it into its full potential. >> And so when we talk about optimizing our brain, let's just 00:05:01.76\00:05:07.57 get this started with probably the hard question, because so often when we talk about 00:05:07.57\00:05:14.88 a brain and who we are, when things aren't working well in our life, we just simply 00:05:14.88\00:05:21.18 will answer that, "Well, that's just who I am." So when we talk 00:05:21.18\00:05:26.02 about optimizing our brains, is it possible that we just have genetic flaws that will prevent 00:05:26.02\00:05:33.16 us from having optimal brain chemistry? >> Well, there are genetic flaws out there, and we 00:05:33.16\00:05:39.17 are going to be discussing some of that in "Optimize Your Brain." It's very -- You know, 00:05:39.17\00:05:44.47 if we didn't have any genetic flaws whatsoever -- and there are individuals that 00:05:44.47\00:05:50.08 occasionally will show up that don't seem to have those mutations or very many of them 00:05:50.08\00:05:55.05 -- we would be able to remember everything that we've ever heard or look at a phonebook 00:05:55.05\00:06:00.96 and then just recite it and put it down. So that's how much the 00:06:00.96\00:06:06.29 brain is actually capable of if it is perfect, but in our world 00:06:06.29\00:06:12.67 today, with all of the degeneration of the genetic code that's going on, there is very 00:06:12.67\00:06:18.77 few brains that are close to perfect -- in fact, really not 00:06:18.77\00:06:23.14 any out there. There are mutations that are more common than others, but the nice thing 00:06:23.14\00:06:28.78 about bad genetics is we can be on a particular lifestyle or 00:06:28.78\00:06:35.66 nutritional factor that can actually deactivate the bad genes, and we call that 00:06:35.66\00:06:41.43 epigenetics. So, no matter what bad genes we have in our brain, we can actually have those 00:06:41.43\00:06:47.27 deactivated often through natural means, and then we can actually reach our full 00:06:47.27\00:06:53.81 potential. >> So, this is exciting. So, even if I'm having 00:06:53.81\00:06:58.21 difficulty in a certain area, and I have a genetic flaw that predisposes me for whatever 00:06:58.21\00:07:03.99 that challenge may be -- whether it's stress, anxiety, depression -- and there are many 00:07:03.99\00:07:09.36 things, and we're gonna talk about some of those things -- 00:07:09.36\00:07:14.23 there's hope... >> Absolutely. >> ...through epigenetics... >> 00:07:14.23\00:07:17.87 Yes. >> ...and proper nutrition that we can, kind of in layman's terms, turn it on and turn it 00:07:17.87\00:07:23.61 off... >> Correct. >> ...to help us along. 00:07:23.61\00:07:26.47 So, as we talk about these genetic flaws, you mentioned something, and I want to probe 00:07:26.47\00:07:31.21 that a little more deeply. Are you saying that we're actually 00:07:31.21\00:07:35.98 seeing an increase in the genetic flaws that are happening in people's -- specifically in 00:07:35.98\00:07:41.06 their brains? >> In general, there has been an increase just because every successive 00:07:41.06\00:07:48.50 generation has about 150 to 300 new mutations over what their parents had, and so, in fact, 00:07:48.50\00:07:55.84 we can actually track from one generation to another how far along you are in regards 00:07:55.84\00:08:03.65 to your genetic code and more mutations. So our children look 00:08:03.65\00:08:09.32 more perfect than us because they're younger, but, actually, their genetics are less perfect 00:08:09.32\00:08:14.62 than their parents. And so there is a gradual increase, but 00:08:14.62\00:08:20.93 there's not an exponential increase. Let me explain this. In the mental-illness field, 00:08:20.93\00:08:26.40 there has been an exponential increase in mental illness. For instance, 60% of college 00:08:26.40\00:08:32.74 students today have a diagnosable mental disorder. That's off the charts 00:08:32.74\00:08:38.75 over what it used to be, but good news is, that's not really due to the fact that 00:08:38.75\00:08:44.59 their genetics have exploded to be that bad, it's the lifestyle 00:08:44.59\00:08:49.96 and nutrition and other factors that are going on in their life that are actually augmenting 00:08:49.96\00:08:55.03 the mutations that they have and making it worse, and so if we get those college students 00:08:55.03\00:09:01.84 on a proper program, that mental illness can actually go away in 00:09:01.84\00:09:09.54 a matter of a few weeks, and their brain can start to be optimized to achieve far higher 00:09:09.54\00:09:14.38 in college than they ever thought possible. >> Wow. So this is a show here that will 00:09:14.38\00:09:19.12 touch all age groups, give hope for all age groups. So let's 00:09:19.12\00:09:25.49 talk about some of these genetic flaws. What are some common genetic flaws that may lead to 00:09:25.49\00:09:30.97 mental disorders, mental illness, stress, anxiety, 00:09:30.97\00:09:35.70 depression? What are some of those genetic flaws? >> Well, the most common genetic 00:09:35.70\00:09:40.68 flaw is something that we call undermethylation. This is a gene 00:09:40.68\00:09:46.92 that as our DNA code is being transcribed, and it's being turned into proteins and things 00:09:46.92\00:09:53.82 like this, we actually undermethylate, and as a result, there's a number of personality 00:09:53.82\00:10:01.16 traits that tend to show up when someone is an undermethylater. 00:10:01.16\00:10:04.57 >> Okay. So, now, let's maybe just unpack that a little bit to 00:10:04.57\00:10:08.20 help everybody understand. What does that mean -- 00:10:08.20\00:10:11.57 undermethylate? >> Well, in the brain, what it means is you're gonna have less serotonin 00:10:11.57\00:10:17.41 activity and less dopamine activity. Serotonin is the molecule that helps your mood to 00:10:17.41\00:10:24.95 be stable when you're under stress, and dopamine is what gives us interest in pursuing 00:10:24.95\00:10:32.49 new things, a love of learning, and so individuals that have serotonin and dopamine-related 00:10:32.49\00:10:40.47 issues tend to have more problems with anxiety. They can have a calm exterior, 00:10:40.47\00:10:46.41 but a tense interior, and because of their undermethylation, they tend 00:10:46.41\00:10:51.58 to be more competitive. These are people that tend to make 00:10:51.58\00:10:56.22 higher grades, or if they're in sports, they have to win, and they're going to be playing as 00:10:56.22\00:11:01.02 hard as they can. You know, the Canadian teams in the Olympics, 00:11:01.02\00:11:06.33 a lot of those people that excel and make gold and silver medals 00:11:06.33\00:11:11.47 are gonna be your undermethylaters, and but those individuals can have calm 00:11:11.47\00:11:18.74 exteriors, but tense interiors. They can be a little antisocial, as well. They don't necessarily 00:11:18.74\00:11:23.91 follow the crowd, and they tend to have a high libido. They can 00:11:23.91\00:11:32.25 have obsessions. This is where more of your obsessive-compulsive type of 00:11:32.25\00:11:37.59 activity, which helps you to be good in sports when you have the OCD if you're obsessing about 00:11:37.59\00:11:43.43 that, but it can cause you to major and minor sometimes and minor and major, and so your 00:11:43.43\00:11:50.51 life can get out of balance, and so those are personality traits that tend to come with the 00:11:50.51\00:11:56.34 undermethylaters. >> Okay. So, now, as we're talking about brain function, we're talking 00:11:56.34\00:11:59.68 about brain chemistry, optimizing brain, you've talked about some of these 00:11:59.68\00:12:03.25 characteristics, and maybe somebody's listening, saying, "Wow, those are some of 00:12:03.25\00:12:07.32 the characteristics that I have, and I internalize that stress, I 00:12:07.32\00:12:13.76 internalize these things. I am obsessive about certain items." 00:12:13.76\00:12:19.30 As we think about that, what is some of the hope that we can provide for an individual 00:12:19.30\00:12:25.54 who is maybe struggling or wrestling with some of these issues and helping them overcome 00:12:25.54\00:12:33.15 this genetic flaw of being an undermethylater? >> Yeah. 00:12:33.15\00:12:38.25 Well, fortunately, there are some things that can actually help to deactivate that 00:12:38.25\00:12:43.26 undermethylation gene. >> Okay. >> One of them is simply 00:12:43.26\00:12:47.00 light therapy. If we have decrease in serotonin activity -- Serotonin actually 00:12:47.00\00:12:53.34 is produced as a result of light through the eyes, and so these 00:12:53.34\00:12:59.71 are people that are gonna be more prone to winter depression that are undermethylaters, 00:12:59.71\00:13:05.75 and so getting a medical-grade light box that simulates the blue sky and waking up 00:13:05.75\00:13:11.79 to that every morning can actually help to deactivate that undermethylation gene. 00:13:11.79\00:13:17.73 Physical exercise also helps significantly, and, in addition, having foods with higher calcium 00:13:17.73\00:13:26.60 and magnesium and making sure you have enough Vitamin D to absorb the calcium and 00:13:26.60\00:13:32.01 magnesium can actually help deactivate that undermethylation 00:13:32.01\00:13:36.54 gene. So, normally, it's a comprehensive approach that 00:13:36.54\00:13:40.05 works. >> Okay. >> Now, there's something else that can help 00:13:40.05\00:13:43.28 the undermethylation gene that the pharmaceutical companies are 00:13:43.28\00:13:47.42 aware of, but your most common antidepressants, the SSRIs, undermethylaters tend to be more 00:13:47.42\00:13:54.40 sociable when they're using these drugs. They tend to have 00:13:54.40\00:14:01.57 less tenseness inside. It can even help with the obsessions, 00:14:01.57\00:14:06.68 but instead of doing it naturally, these drugs are actually plugging up the vacuum 00:14:06.68\00:14:13.15 cleaners in the nerve that releases the serotonin. Now, as 00:14:13.15\00:14:17.99 a result of those plugged vacuum cleaners -- In fact, the medical term for this is Selective 00:14:17.99\00:14:24.09 Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor... >> Okay. >> ...meaning that it's 00:14:24.09\00:14:28.10 inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin... >> Yes. 00:14:28.10\00:14:30.57 >> ...so there's more serotonin in the nerve, in the synapse, to 00:14:30.57\00:14:35.70 be able to produce an electrical transmission, but when you prevent the reuptake of it, 00:14:35.70\00:14:40.68 eventually you're gonna deplete that very neuron of the serotonin that needs 00:14:40.68\00:14:45.58 to be able to communicate with the cell. So that's why these 00:14:45.58\00:14:49.85 drugs produce more of a short-term benefit -- maybe six months, nine months, and after 00:14:49.85\00:14:55.09 that, you're needing to increase the dose, and you're needing to use even more medicine, 00:14:55.09\00:14:59.36 and so that's why it's far better to use natural approaches to deactivate that gene 00:14:59.36\00:15:06.00 than it is the unnatural approaches, which are gonna produce some unwanted 00:15:06.00\00:15:11.21 side effects. >> Now, we're gonna come back to this again. 00:15:11.21\00:15:14.64 We're gonna talk more. I just wanted to have a little snippet so somebody can really 00:15:14.64\00:15:19.05 sense that there's some hope here, but when we talk about -- You've talked about 00:15:19.05\00:15:23.45 obsessive-compulsive disorder, but maybe there's somebody out there that has a very high 00:15:23.45\00:15:28.56 I.Q. or a great achiever. Can they still be affected by this -- depression, anxiety, 00:15:28.56\00:15:33.26 stress -- things that we're talking about? >> Oh, 00:15:33.26\00:15:37.03 absolutely. In fact, the very gene that we're talking about tends to be associated with high 00:15:37.03\00:15:42.84 I.Q. and high achievers. So, yes, they can be riddled with depression and anxiety. 00:15:42.84\00:15:48.28 A lot of high-I.Q., high-achiever people have some imbalance emotionally 00:15:48.28\00:15:53.75 in their life, and so there's hope for them. Now, when we 00:15:53.75\00:15:58.75 balance this out, it doesn't mean we're going to decrease their I.Q. or achieving, but 00:15:58.75\00:16:03.12 we're going to balance them emotionally so that they'll actually even be a more 00:16:03.12\00:16:08.36 successful achiever because our success in life has a lot more to do with our emotional 00:16:08.36\00:16:14.00 intelligence than even our I.Q., and so once this is balanced out, it's like a launching pad 00:16:14.00\00:16:20.98 for success. >> Now, this is very exciting because, you know, 00:16:20.98\00:16:26.38 sometimes, again, we come back to that idea -- "Well, you know, my I.Q.'s not very high because 00:16:26.38\00:16:31.52 that's just the way I am, and I can't control myself in these areas because that's 00:16:31.52\00:16:36.52 just the way I am," but what you're saying is, actually, while that may be the way you 00:16:36.52\00:16:42.66 are now, there is the potential to actually change. >> Exactly. 00:16:42.66\00:16:48.07 Exactly. We'll get into some other genes that can inhibit our I.Q. Undermethylation doesn't 00:16:48.07\00:16:53.78 inhibit our I.Q., per se, but there are other genetic flaws that will make you not even want 00:16:53.78\00:16:59.21 to be a reader, or reading is difficult, and these are people that are struggling through 00:16:59.21\00:17:04.35 school, and that genetic flaw can also be corrected. >> Well, that is just very good 00:17:04.35\00:17:10.53 news. Now, what about creative people. Can creative people 00:17:10.53\00:17:14.60 experience this stress and anxiety, this undermethylation? 00:17:14.60\00:17:18.20 >> Yes. Now, creative people tend to have a different gene. The ones who are more naturally 00:17:18.20\00:17:22.77 creative, these are your artistic people. These are 00:17:22.77\00:17:27.31 people that would excel in music or in art, and they're not really interested in getting the 00:17:27.31\00:17:32.28 good grades like the undermethylaters are, but those individuals can actually 00:17:32.28\00:17:38.52 overmethylate. So only about half -- a little less than half of society, about 45%, 00:17:38.52\00:17:44.53 actually has normal methylation. So about 38% are undermethylaters, and about 00:17:44.53\00:17:51.73 another 15% or 20% are overmethylaters, and overmethylaters can have 00:17:51.73\00:17:58.07 their own issues that tend to go with the artistic world. They can have histrionic 00:17:58.07\00:18:04.75 personalities, they can have very poor stress control when things start to unfold, 00:18:04.75\00:18:12.25 and so we correct that in a different way. We're actually 00:18:12.25\00:18:17.29 cleaning up their vacuum cleaners in their neuron naturally, and that can correct 00:18:17.29\00:18:21.96 the overmethylation issues. >> Okay. So we've got kind of the 00:18:21.96\00:18:28.20 same issue of methylation, but opposite poles. >> Opposite 00:18:28.20\00:18:31.44 poles. >> One under, one over. >> Correct. >> So let's talk -- 00:18:31.44\00:18:35.38 Because maybe there's -- 'Cause now we've covered a vast piece of ground here because 00:18:35.38\00:18:40.82 you've got the creative, musical, artistic types that are 00:18:40.82\00:18:46.99 overmethylating, maybe. >> Correct. >> Then you've got 00:18:46.99\00:18:49.89 individuals that are the achievers -- your athletes, those leaders that are driving 00:18:49.89\00:18:59.27 and things of that nature. How -- And you're talking about 00:18:59.27\00:19:03.87 we can go to the doctor, we can go to the pharmacy, we can take 00:19:03.87\00:19:09.58 a pill and feel better for a period of time, or we can strive to have this addressed and fixed 00:19:09.58\00:19:16.15 for the long-term. So let's talk how can nutrition and lifestyle 00:19:16.15\00:19:21.26 -- we've talked about a few things. How can that deactivate 00:19:21.26\00:19:26.96 these bad genes? What do we do and what happens? >> Okay. Well, in order to correct 00:19:26.96\00:19:31.43 undermethylation, we need to have enough calcium and enough magnesium around in the cell 00:19:31.43\00:19:38.24 membranes and also in the communication aspect of things, 00:19:38.24\00:19:44.45 and so these are people that we want to make sure they have adequate Vitamin D levels, and 00:19:44.45\00:19:49.85 we want to make sure they have enough absorbable calcium and enough magnesium. In addition, 00:19:49.85\00:19:56.69 we talked about light therapy and exercise. So if we put this all together, it can make a 00:19:56.69\00:20:01.56 tremendous difference in balancing the emotions of 00:20:01.56\00:20:06.47 undermethylater. someone who is an >> So let's talk about the -- Because -- And we've talked 00:20:06.47\00:20:10.61 about this before 'cause I said, you know, you're talking to a Canadian audience, and we talk 00:20:10.61\00:20:15.78 about exercise, and there's a good chunk of Canada that a good part of the year is not a good 00:20:15.78\00:20:20.88 time to be outside, so to speak, and I'll never forget the answer 00:20:20.88\00:20:24.39 you gave. So we'll go for it again. What about those cold months where it's hard to get 00:20:24.39\00:20:29.92 outside and exercise? >> Well, there's no such thing as bad 00:20:29.92\00:20:33.46 weather, just bad clothing, so... >> [ Chuckles ] I was 00:20:33.46\00:20:36.46 hoping that's what you would say. That's what you said the last time, and so we got to get 00:20:36.46\00:20:40.80 out there and exercise. How much exercise should a person be 00:20:40.80\00:20:44.97 getting? >> Well, you know, if they are a serious undermethylater, they're gonna 00:20:44.97\00:20:50.81 need at least an hour of aerobic exercise a day to completely 00:20:50.81\00:20:55.18 balance it out. >> Okay. And let's define that. Aerobic 00:20:55.18\00:20:57.95 exercise -- what do you mean by that? >> Well, that would be like brisk walking or running. 00:20:57.95\00:21:02.96 You know, amazingly, when we have people, like, train for a half-marathon -- and, 00:21:02.96\00:21:07.40 you know, you can train for a half-marathon in about 20 weeks. 00:21:07.40\00:21:11.87 There's a lot of correction of undermethylation that takes place just as a result 00:21:11.87\00:21:17.04 of the training for that half-marathon. >> Okay. 00:21:17.04\00:21:20.08 >> And, you know, you're gonna have to be exercising about an hour a day for those training 00:21:20.08\00:21:25.88 episodes. >> Okay. Now, let's talk about 00:21:25.88\00:21:28.72 the Vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium. How can somebody get 00:21:28.72\00:21:32.69 their Vitamin D? How can somebody get their calcium and 00:21:32.69\00:21:35.72 magnesium? >> Okay. Well, Vitamin D we get from the sun, but in the wintertime, 00:21:35.72\00:21:39.66 particularly up in Canada, you can't get enough from the sun even if you're outdoors 00:21:39.66\00:21:44.33 'cause it's not direct enough sunlight, and so those individuals may need to take 00:21:44.33\00:21:49.74 some Vitamin D supplements. The only ones who don't are the ones 00:21:49.74\00:21:54.54 who are outdoors all the time in the summertime, and Vitamin D is stored, and so it can be stored 00:21:54.54\00:22:00.92 enough for the winter months, but most Canadians, I've noticed, have indoor jobs, and 00:22:00.92\00:22:06.45 so they're gonna need to consider taking a Vitamin D supplement or getting their 00:22:06.45\00:22:11.96 Vitamin D measure. >> Okay. >> Calcium -- the best foods -- There's quite a few foods 00:22:11.96\00:22:16.10 that are high in calcium, but your greens, in general. You know, we think of cows' milk 00:22:16.10\00:22:21.34 having a lot of calcium, but that's because those cows are eating greens all day long, 00:22:21.34\00:22:26.24 and so kale, spinach, you know, turnip greens, even dandelion 00:22:26.24\00:22:34.58 greens. You know, any of these greens are just loaded with calcium -- collards, by the way, 00:22:34.58\00:22:40.99 or lamb's-quarter. That's a weed, actually, but it's loaded 00:22:40.99\00:22:46.86 with calcium. But then you don't have to necessarily go for those greens. Soybeans, for instance, 00:22:46.86\00:22:51.23 are a high source of calcium, green soybeans. Sesame seeds are 00:22:51.23\00:22:56.07 a good source. Figs are actually a good source of calcium, and then beans. You know, baked 00:22:56.07\00:23:02.08 beans are gonna be a moderate source of calcium. The grain that's highest -- one of the 00:23:02.08\00:23:06.85 grain's that's highest in it is quinoa.
