In places like San 00:01:58.91\00:02:05.25 Francisco, for example, where there are frequent earthquakes, they have developed foundation 00:02:05.35\00:02:11.56 systems that are able to withstand the pressures of an earthquake so buildings still 00:02:11.66\00:02:18.83 stay upright, because they've been founded on a strong foundation that will not wither 00:02:18.93\00:02:25.84 under pressure. In the Christian life, in the spiritual life, how 00:02:25.94\00:02:32.65 can we be built in such a way that we won't wither under the pressure and the attacks of the 00:02:32.75\00:02:40.02 devil? You know, the Bible says we're living in the end of time. The Bible also says that the 00:02:40.12\00:02:45.39 devil is roaming about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. So it should be with 00:02:45.49\00:02:53.44 utmost importance that we establish a solid foundation so we can withstand the attacks of 00:02:53.54\00:03:02.61 the enemy. As we've been talking about foundations, I've had with me guest Pastor Karl 00:03:02.71\00:03:09.58 Tsatalbasidis. Pastor Karl, I want to welcome you back to It Is Written Canada. So happy that 00:03:09.68\00:03:13.52 you're here with us. PASTOR KARL: Thank you, Chris. CHRIS: Now, for those of you who are 00:03:13.62\00:03:18.06 watching for the first time with Pastor Karl, Pastor Karl's been a pastor 18 years; the last 5 00:03:18.16\00:03:24.33 years, he's taught at the collegiate level, and about to complete a Ph.D. dissertation. 00:03:24.43\00:03:30.94 So pretty soon, we'll be calling you Dr. Karl. I don't know that many of your students are ready 00:03:31.04\00:03:35.98 to call you Dr. Tsatalbasidis. PASTOR KARL: They're definitely not ready, no. CHRIS: Now, where 00:03:36.08\00:03:40.85 we left off at the last show is, we were asking the question fundamentally, "Why don't we 00:03:40.95\00:03:47.39 hear more people teaching, more people preaching about the sanctuary?" And in particular - 00:03:47.49\00:03:53.26 we're going to talk about history in just a moment - but in particular, are there any 00:03:53.36\00:04:00.04 Bible verses that help us understand why it is we simply just don't hear much about the 00:04:00.14\00:04:08.68 sanctuary? PASTOR KARL: Yes, Chris, there are. We're going to go to a text in Daniel 8 and 00:04:08.78\00:04:12.21 then we'll go later to Revelation 13. You know, the devil isn't very wise, but he's 00:04:12.31\00:04:18.39 smart, and he knows where to attack, and he recognizes that the sanctuary is the framework. 00:04:18.49\00:04:23.96 It provides the system and guidance in order to help us to understand God, to understand 00:04:24.06\00:04:29.40 how we're saved, to understand how we worship, to understand how we should get along with one 00:04:29.50\00:04:33.90 another and ethical decisions that we have to make, and even the process toward unity, or 00:04:34.00\00:04:38.94 what some may refer to as ecumenism. And in the Old Testament sanctuary, everything 00:04:39.04\00:04:45.81 revolved around that. All Israelite life was gathered around that. And just to review, 00:04:45.91\00:04:50.52 we've been discovering that even in the Old Testament sanctuary, everything was oriented and 00:04:50.62\00:04:55.49 geared toward the heavenly. And then we discussed Hebrews chapter 12 and Revelation 00:04:55.59\00:05:00.63 chapter 1 and 2, and Revelation 4 and 5 and others where you have all this rich imagery about 00:05:00.73\00:05:05.73 the sanctuary and heaven. And so that view of the heavenly sanctuary has been really 00:05:05.83\00:05:12.87 eclipsed. And there are real reasons that the Bible points as to how this went about 00:05:12.97\00:05:18.95 happening. So just to pick it up. CHRIS: We'll go right here to Daniel 8, but something I 00:05:19.05\00:05:23.45 think, you and I were talking before the show started, and I think it's something important 00:05:23.55\00:05:27.22 that we need to point out, because there may be somebody listening who has heard someone 00:05:27.32\00:05:31.49 say, "You know, the Old Testament sanctuary actually is just a copy or looks just like 00:05:31.59\00:05:39.37 other ancient pagan sanctuaries or temples." Now, we have established very clearly, the 00:05:39.47\00:05:44.34 Bible says, the sanctuary in heaven has existed forever, since the beginning of time. And 00:05:44.44\00:05:51.21 so I asked you the question, "Could it be that the Hebrew sanctuary, while maybe coming 00:05:51.31\00:05:57.52 after some of those pagan sanctuaries, the Hebrew sanctuary is actually not a copy 00:05:57.62\00:06:05.09 of those pagan sanctuaries, but rather, those pagan sanctuaries are a counterfeit to the true 00:06:05.19\00:06:12.33 sanctuary?" What do you think about that? PASTOR KARL: You know, just before we go to 00:06:12.43\00:06:16.10 Daniel, why don't we just go to a book over, Ezekiel chapter 28? CHRIS: Sounds good. PASTOR KARL: 00:06:16.20\00:06:22.34 And in Ezekiel chapter 28, it talks about the rise, or it actually explains the rebellion 00:06:22.44\00:06:30.25 of Lucifer. And in verse 14, it says: 00:06:30.35\00:06:31.85 PASTOR KARL: Now, there are two things in verse 14 that point to the heavenly sanctuary: him as 00:06:48.37\00:06:51.84 the anointed cherub, and in the sanctuary of Solomon's temple, you actually have four of them, 00:06:51.94\00:06:56.28 in First Kings 6:23-28. And then he's in the midst of the stones of fire; in Ezekiel 1:4-5 you 00:06:56.38\00:07:05.22 have the living creatures that are in the midst of the stones of fire, reminiscent of 00:07:05.32\00:07:09.12 Revelation 4 and 5 and the living creatures that are there So it's interesting that you 00:07:09.22\00:07:13.40 make the point that these other pagan temples are actually counterfeits, and I think this 00:07:13.50\00:07:19.17 text kind of explains why. It tells us that Satan, Lucifer, was one of these covering 00:07:19.27\00:07:25.31 cherubs. And of course, he would have first-hand knowledge and first-hand experience about the 00:07:25.41\00:07:31.31 realities of the heavenly sanctuary. And one of the best things he can do, then, is to 00:07:31.41\00:07:36.69 make counterfeits to make it look and appear as if all these pagan temples are really, you 00:07:36.79\00:07:43.79 know, resembling the heavenly, but yet, he can't quite do that; he can't make them an exact 00:07:43.89\00:07:48.10 duplicate without ruining his own mission and his own purpose. CHRIS: That's right. PASTOR 00:07:48.20\00:07:52.03 KARL: And so he will go ahead and then modify them. And then some critical scholars that 00:07:52.13\00:07:57.31 don't really believe the Bible is inspired and that we can't use one text in order to 00:07:57.41\00:08:02.11 illuminate another, they'll pick up on that and say, "Hey, the Hebrews really got this idea 00:08:02.21\00:08:07.12 from all the surrounding nations," when in fact, as your question really alludes to, 00:08:07.22\00:08:10.69 there was an arch-enemy, and he knew the plans, and he was able to counterfeit this. 00:08:10.79\00:08:15.29 CHRIS: Absolutely. And now, to our viewer, if you are saying, "Who is this arch-enemy? Who is 00:08:15.39\00:08:21.10 Lucifer? Who is Satan?" you can go to our YouTube channel, YouTube.com/IIWCanada. There, 00:08:21.20\00:08:29.27 you can look up two different series: "Noah: The Real Story" or "Star Wars." In both of 00:08:29.37\00:08:37.25 those, we trace the history of rebellion of this once-angel, now turned arch deceiver; once 00:08:37.35\00:08:44.72 known as Lucifer, now known as Satan. So Pastor Karl, very clear - and I wanted to point 00:08:44.82\00:08:50.09 that out - because what we are seeing is we are seeing counterfeits. And it makes 00:08:50.19\00:08:53.43 sense. The devil was in heaven at one time. He would've known the layout of the sanctuary. And 00:08:53.53\00:08:58.83 in his best attempt to make religions that actually worship him, he lays out this sanctuary 00:08:58.93\00:09:05.34 system that is a false or counterfeit. But we have something else going on here 00:09:05.44\00:09:10.11 that we don't hear about the sanctuary very much: we actually see, in the book of Daniel, that 00:09:10.21\00:09:16.18 the sanctuary is trampled. PASTOR KARL: Yes. CHRIS: Let's talk about that, and then we'll 00:09:16.28\00:09:19.59 jump to Revelation chapter 13. PASTOR KARL: Alright. So let's go back to Daniel chapter 8, and 00:09:19.69\00:09:25.16 we'll pick it up at verse 8, it says: 00:09:25.26\00:09:27.73 PASTOR KARL: So Alexander's empire is broken, 00:09:41.01\00:09:43.18 and it goes to the four winds of heaven. And it says: 00:09:43.18\00:09:47.98 PASTOR KARL: And so out of one of these horns, and out of one of the directions of the compass 00:09:57.13\00:10:01.26 at the same time, this little horn would arise. And there's a book by Edwin de Cock, brilliant 00:10:01.36\00:10:09.40 South African scholar, who traced the close relationship between the Greeks and the 00:10:09.50\00:10:14.18 Romans. He traced it historically, but also prophetically. And I'm not going 00:10:14.28\00:10:19.08 to bombard our audience with a whole bunch of text establishing this, but here in Daniel chapter 00:10:19.18\00:10:24.45 8, this is basically a Grecian horn. Alexander's a Grecian king, and his empire splits up 00:10:24.55\00:10:32.23 into four, and so these are four Grecian empires. And then the little horn would grow up out of 00:10:32.33\00:10:37.43 one of those empires. And that happened to actually be the empire of the western Greeks in 00:10:37.53\00:10:44.17 Italy, which was really the cradle of Greek philosophy. You have philosophers like 00:10:44.27\00:10:49.78 Parmenides and like Pythagoras; and the more famous ones, then, who assumed some of their 00:10:49.88\00:10:54.48 teachings, were like Plato and Aristotle. And so there you have the development of Greek 00:10:54.58\00:10:59.95 thinking. And so how did Greek thinking basically affect the sanctuary? Well, just before we 00:11:00.12\00:11:05.43 get to that point, let's look at one of the activities of the little horn in verse 11, 00:11:05.53\00:11:10.10 CHRIS: Mmhmm. PASTOR KARL: Now, we've discussed the fact that there are earthly sanctuaries, 00:11:20.98\00:11:23.41 the earthly tent and the temple structure, but that also, there's a sanctuary in heaven. 00:11:23.41\00:11:27.62 So the question is, well, this casting down, which one does it refer to? Well, in verse 14: 00:11:27.62\00:11:33.12 If we apply the year-a-day principle, which is a principle that has been well-known by 00:11:37.23\00:11:40.90 Biblical scholars, employed with all the reformation fathers as well, if we apply, we're not 00:11:40.90\00:11:48.47 looking for the cleansing of any earthly sanctuary. That will be 2,300 years into the future. 00:11:48.57\00:11:53.04 CHRIS: That's right. PASTOR KARL: So we're talking about the cleansing of a heavenly 00:11:53.14\00:11:57.15 sanctuary. We're talking about the fact that when it says "the place of his sanctuary was cast 00:11:57.25\00:12:01.45 down," what it really means, is the instrumental role that the sanctuary would play would be 00:12:01.55\00:12:08.16 completely eclipsed, so the place of his sanctuary being cast down. In Psalm 97:2, it 00:12:08.26\00:12:14.83 links the place of God's sanctuary with God's throne, and that righteousness and judgement 00:12:14.93\00:12:18.90 are the foundation of His throne. And so this is an attack on the heavenly sanctuary. Well, 00:12:19.00\00:12:25.61 how exactly do they do that? I mean, the little horn can't fly up into heaven and wrench the 00:12:25.71\00:12:30.18 angel, you know, all the angels off their posts and wrestle God Himself. This is obviously 00:12:30.28\00:12:35.85 speaking in metaphorical terms when it talks about casting down His place. So this is a casting 00:12:35.95\00:12:41.69 down of the systematic role and nature of the sanctuary, that it would no longer be the lens 00:12:41.79\00:12:47.60 through which God's people would then understand Who God was, His character, or how to be saved, 00:12:47.66\00:12:54.24 or how to worship, or how to make ethical decisions and so forth and so on. That would be 00:12:54.34\00:12:59.17 completely eclipsed. And they did that through. the Greeks thought that ultimate reality 00:12:59.27\00:13:05.01 was outside of time and space. And what they mean by that - they call it timelessness - and 00:13:05.11\00:13:11.79 in timelessness, there is no past, there is no present, there is no future. There is no 00:13:11.89\00:13:15.86 succession of time, so there's a complete lack and incompatibility of ultimate 00:13:15.96\00:13:21.13 reality with time and space. CHRIS: Okay. Now, let's unpack that just a little bit, because 00:13:21.23\00:13:25.83 there might be somebody watching saying, "Whoa, I kind of feel like the train went going by 00:13:25.93\00:13:28.90 there." PASTOR KARL: Yes. CHRIS: So let us be clear. Now, you used the word "lens." So I'm 00:13:29.00\00:13:34.51 going to use a little analogy. You know, almost all of us have been to the eye doctor at some 00:13:34.61\00:13:38.45 point in our life, and as we go to the eye doctor, the eye doctor puts that little device 00:13:38.55\00:13:43.08 up, and then they're trying to find the right prescription for you, and they'll go, "Number 00:13:43.18\00:13:46.99 one, number two. Number one, number two." And as they're flipping that, one is a little 00:13:47.09\00:13:52.89 out of focus, one is in focus. The sanctuary, if we can take that analogy, is like the lens 00:13:52.99\00:14:00.20 that makes everything crystal clear. The little horn power, the cradle of philosophy, the 00:14:00.30\00:14:09.34 cradle of really modern philosophy, they're in the western Greek empire, which was 00:14:09.44\00:14:15.32 actually in Italy, gives rise to a new system of interpretation, a new lens, using that same 00:14:15.42\00:14:22.76 analogy, that, when you flip the lens, everything is blurred. However, in order to attempt to 00:14:22.86\00:14:34.14 bring some crystallizing of the blurring, the explanation is that, "Oh, things aren't really 00:14:34.24\00:14:38.47 blurry; they may appear blurry, but it's not really blurry." PASTOR KARL: Mmhmm. CHRIS: And 00:14:38.57\00:14:44.75 in that context, let's talk about this timelessness now a little bit to help it really be 00:14:44.85\00:14:49.92 concrete for the viewer, for the listener today. What do you mean by that, the timelessness? How 00:14:50.02\00:14:55.99 is that in opposition to the sanctuary? PASTOR KARL: Okay, very good. And it's a hard 00:14:56.09\00:15:01.76 concept kind of to grasp. You know what my wife tells me? She tells me, "You know what? I have 00:15:01.86\00:15:06.80 to study all this philosophy because it's hard to study systematic theology without 00:15:06.90\00:15:10.87 studying philosophy." And so when we head into all this, she says, "You know, you're not 00:15:10.97\00:15:15.08 living in the real world." And most of the time, she's correct. But I'll tell you what, it has a 00:15:15.18\00:15:20.25 massive impact on Christianity and the real world. And it usually takes me a few sessions 00:15:20.35\00:15:26.19 in class in order to try to break it down, so I'll try to do my best. Socrates was having 00:15:26.29\00:15:33.86 these debates with the sophists. That means the wise ones. And the sophists adhered to this, 00:15:33.96\00:15:42.50 which meant that, you know, they believed it. You could make anything anything you want. You 00:15:42.60\00:15:46.84 know, the truth could be black today and then white tomorrow. And so. CHRIS: Kind of the 00:15:46.94\00:15:50.81 idea, what's true for you is true for you, what's true for me is true for me. PASTOR 00:15:50.91\00:15:53.68 KARL: Yes. CHRIS: Relativism. PASTOR KARL: Correct, relativism. And Socrates, who 00:15:53.78\00:15:58.32 was really working and assuming the insights of Parmenides and Pythagoras, was saying, "No, 00:15:58.42\00:16:04.49 there is a truth that doesn't change." And he based that on the immortality of the soul, 00:16:04.59\00:16:11.27 which was then based on this idea that ultimate reality has no time and no space. 00:16:11.37\00:16:18.21 CHRIS: Okay. PASTOR KARL: That was considered unchangeable. So there's no such thing, in 00:16:18.31\00:16:23.88 ultimate reality, as, there's a past, there's a present, there's a future; that doesn't exist 00:16:23.98\00:16:28.75 anymore. And that ended up being the template from which the early church, the medieval 00:16:28.85\00:16:35.29 church, began to understand Who God was. So when the Bible says God was unchangeable, they 00:16:35.39\00:16:40.43 interpret that to mean that He actually doesn't interact with His creation, because that would 00:16:40.53\00:16:46.87 lessen His perfection. CHRIS: Got it. PASTOR KARL: Okay. So 00:16:46.97\00:16:50.81 timelessness means the incompatibility of time and space with ultimate reality, 00:16:50.91\00:16:56.21 because there is no time and space. CHRIS: And that stands in direct opposition to the 00:16:56.31\00:17:01.58 sanctuary, because the sanctuary is a real place that exists in real time - now, that time has 00:17:01.68\00:17:08.52 been forever since the beginning - but where the sanctuary, actually, the very function of 00:17:08.62\00:17:14.56 the sanctuary itself, as outlined in Exodus 25:8 is, God wants the sanctuary to be there 00:17:14.66\00:17:21.67 because He wants to dwell amongst us. And so you have the rise of philosophy, which is 00:17:21.77\00:17:29.14 essentially saying, God's timelessness is actually His lack of desire or lack of intent 00:17:29.24\00:17:37.72 to interact personally with His beings, because there is no reality, so to speak. PASTOR 00:17:37.82\00:17:44.09 KARL: It's impossible for Him to do that, in other words. CHRIS: Whereas the Biblical framework 00:17:44.19\00:17:49.33 of the sanctuary, that lens that brings everything crystal clear, is that God wants to dwell among 00:17:49.43\00:17:55.10 us, God wants to relate with us, and God wants to save us, and God wants to take us to a real 00:17:55.20\00:18:03.91 heaven where we would have a real home with Him where He sits on the throne in the real 00:18:04.01\00:18:10.15 sanctuary. PASTOR KARL: Yeah. CHRIS: Am I kind of summarizing that to help us out here? PASTOR 00:18:10.25\00:18:15.32 KARL: Yeah. And that we're actually doing real things. CHRIS: Yes. PASTOR KARL: We're 00:18:15.42\00:18:19.63 not inhibited by the same things that inhibit us here now, but we're actually doing real 00:18:19.73\00:18:24.03 things. And you know, that brought me to my conversion experience, actually. And I 00:18:24.13\00:18:28.34 didn't really have a lot of Bible instruction growing up, but the contemporary teaching 00:18:28.44\00:18:34.98 about heaven is that, well, you're just going to be kind of like on puffy clouds playing 00:18:35.08\00:18:39.45 harps for all the ceaseless ages of eternity. And as a young man of 21 and 22 years old, that 00:18:39.55\00:18:45.72 wasn't very appealing. It's like, well, who would want to go there? But when you talk about 00:18:45.82\00:18:51.46 the fact that in heaven, we're not only going to see Christ and see the Father face to face, but 00:18:51.56\00:18:58.03 have association with angels, to see the vastness of God's handiwork, doing real things; 00:18:58.13\00:19:05.27 and so these ideas are very pervasive. We're just kind of touching on the consequences of 00:19:05.37\00:19:11.31 some of them right here. But yes, if the Greek idea is true, it changes everything. It 00:19:11.41\00:19:16.99 changes how we view God; it changes how we view ultimate reality. CHRIS: Mmhmm. PASTOR 00:19:17.09\00:19:21.22 KARL: It changes how we're saved; it changes the methods that we use for worship; and the 00:19:21.32\00:19:27.30 whole thing just snowballs after that. CHRIS: So we're continuing to dwell on this question, "Why 00:19:27.40\00:19:31.93 don't we hear much about it?" Karl, are there any other texts that might help us in this 00:19:32.03\00:19:35.70 understanding of how the sanctuary has been cast down? Something in the book of 00:19:35.80\00:19:39.27 Revelation that might give us a little clue-in as to what has happened? PASTOR KARL: Yes, 00:19:39.37\00:19:44.41 let's turn to Revelation chapter 13. You know, those books fit together like a hand in a glove. 00:19:44.51\00:19:49.98 And often, the themes that Daniel raises, John the revelator goes and picks up on. 00:19:50.09\00:19:56.19 And so we're in Revelation chapter 13. And in verse 5, it talks about this beast that 00:19:56.29\00:20:04.23 comes up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns. And in verse 2, it says: 00:20:04.33\00:20:09.34 PASTOR KARL: And this brings us back to Daniel chapter 7, and that leopard represents Greece. 00:20:16.51\00:20:18.65 And it says: PASTOR KARL: Now, notice very closely in verse 2, that the frame of this animal is 00:20:29.29\00:20:32.96 the leopard, which means that, although this is a Roman beast here that we're talking about, 00:20:33.06\00:20:40.20 and again, there's a close association, not only historically, but prophetically, 00:20:40.30\00:20:44.67 between Greece and Rome. When the Romans took over, they were the superiors of the Greeks as 00:20:44.77\00:20:49.78 far as militarily, as far as administratively, but yet, there's one place where they 00:20:49.88\00:20:54.42 didn't conquer, and that was in the area of philosophy. And they ended up incorporating the Greek 00:20:54.52\00:20:59.55 philosophical structure into their system. And in verse 5, we 00:20:59.65\00:21:05.73 see here, it says: PASTOR KARL: So here is, stated a little differently than Daniel chapter 00:21:25.08\00:21:29.52 8, but this beast that rises up out of the sea would blaspheme the tabernacle. And he would 00:21:29.62\00:21:37.16 eclipse it from our view. He would completely reinterpret it. He would set up his own earthly 00:21:37.26\00:21:43.06 priestly system and duplicate that which is in heaven here on earth, and at the same time, 00:21:43.16\00:21:49.57 eclipse our view from what's going on there in heaven. CHRIS: Now, you mentioned this in our 00:21:49.67\00:21:52.97 last show together, so we have this. The Bible actually says there would come a time where 00:21:53.07\00:21:59.51 the temple, the sanctuary - and now we have another word here introduced, the tabernacle - all 00:21:59.61\00:22:03.15 of those are synonymous words - would be cast down, would be trampled underfoot. And you keep 00:22:03.25\00:22:09.62 using this word "eclipsed." I love that, because the sun is pervasive, the sun shines, 00:22:09.72\00:22:17.93 unless there is an eclipse. And so, the Greek philosophy which actually found its home in the 00:22:18.03\00:22:25.87 church, the medieval church, essentially crowds out the light of the sanctuary. And something 00:22:25.97\00:22:33.11 you mentioned in the last show was that in the Church Fathers, 37 volumes of the Church 00:22:33.21\00:22:38.55 Fathers, we find very little, if any mention of the sanctuary at all. PASTOR KARL: No, hardly 00:22:38.65\00:22:44.76 anything at all. You can punch up those terms in the search engine, and you find absolutely 00:22:44.86\00:22:49.63 nothing. And Revelation was the last book that was written. You're talking, what, 80, 90 00:22:49.73\00:22:55.14 A.D. or later. And then, you know, you have some of these writings that are not too far 00:22:55.24\00:23:00.54 from that, on into the 5th, 6th, 7th century, and there's nothing, absolutely nothing. 00:23:00.64\00:23:06.78 CHRIS: Wow. Now, in these last five minutes that we have together, Pastor Karl, what else 00:23:06.88\00:23:12.05 do we see happening historically where the sanctuary is just falling off the scene? PASTOR 00:23:12.15\00:23:17.93 KARL: yeah. You know, I teach a class called History of Christianity, and so I take my 00:23:18.03\00:23:22.60 students through a little more involved process of explaining Greek philosophy, how Daniel and 00:23:22.70\00:23:27.07 Revelation foresee the rise of all this. And because philosophy is sometimes so oblivious and so 00:23:27.17\00:23:39.78 broad and so, you know, "What does this have to do with anything?" and so people kind of 00:23:39.88\00:23:45.79 have a hard time, and so they don't study it. But what we usually find is that even church 00:23:45.89\00:23:50.86 fathers like, let's say, Tertullian, for example, he was kind of, well, not in 00:23:50.96\00:23:55.20 competition, but one of his contemporaries was Clement from Alexandria. And Alexandria was a 00:23:55.30\00:24:01.44 hotbed of Greek thinking. And Clement found no problem in amalgamating Greek philosophy 00:24:01.54\00:24:07.01 and the Bible. Tertullian, on the other hand, despised that approach, completely despised 00:24:07.11\00:24:12.61 it. But, when it came to the issue of the Sabbath, he ended up using Greek philosophy in 00:24:12.71\00:24:19.22 order to debunk the Sabbath by claiming that there is somehow a heavenly eternal Sabbath, and 00:24:19.32\00:24:25.19 then a temporal Sabbath, and that Jesus kept the heavenly timeless Sabbath, but He didn't 00:24:25.29\00:24:30.73 keep the seventh-day earthly Sabbath. And so you can put your head in the sand and say you 00:24:30.83\00:24:35.94 don't want to study philosophy, but you will be doomed to be affected by it. And this has 00:24:36.04\00:24:41.38 been traced not only just in the early church fathers, but even in some of the protestant 00:24:41.48\00:24:44.75 reformists as well, who, like Martin Luther, who called philosophy "like the harlot," 00:24:44.85\00:24:50.95 but even still, ended up using some of their systems in order to explain things that really 00:24:51.05\00:24:56.06 have no basis in the Bible. And so really, some of the top thinkers have been affected by 00:24:56.16\00:25:01.46 these Greek views: Philo of Alexandria, a contemporary of Jesus, who thought, again, you 00:25:01.56\00:25:06.00 could amalgamate the Bible and Greek thinking. When it came to the sanctuary, he basically 00:25:06.10\00:25:10.51 allegorized it away. He completely spiritualized it away. When it came to even 00:25:10.61\00:25:18.48 Augustine in the 5th century, same thing happened. When it came to Aquinas, a prominent 00:25:18.58\00:25:26.12 Roman Catholic theologian in the 13th century, again, they basically just spiritualized it 00:25:26.22\00:25:30.79 away. Why? Because their concept of ultimate reality has no room for this kind of spatio-temporal 00:25:30.89\00:25:36.93 structure in which God actually moves from place to place. There's absolutely no room for 00:25:37.03\00:25:41.84 it. CHRIS: So Pastor Karl, we have about two minutes left. So I'm just going to simply ask you 00:25:41.94\00:25:49.54 this question - we're going to pick this up more in our next show - is there any hope? Do we 00:25:49.64\00:25:54.32 see any hope for a restoration of our own thinking? Because the Bible is quite clear: God exists 00:25:54.42\00:26:03.49 in time, God exists in space. The sanctuary is the sanctuary. It's real. What hope do we have? 00:26:03.59\00:26:11.93 PASTOR KARL: Psalm 11:3: If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? PASTOR 00:26:12.03\00:26:17.87 KARL: The psalmist says in verse 4 that: The Lord's throne is in heaven. PASTOR KARL: Even 00:26:17.97\00:26:22.08 historically, Chris, as God's people were scattered from Jerusalem to Babylon and other 00:26:22.18\00:26:27.42 lands because of their sins, there came a time when they would return. And when they 00:26:27.52\00:26:32.52 returned, what did they begin to do? They began immediately to rebuild the sanctuary again. And 00:26:32.62\00:26:39.63 so as they came out of Babylon, God had called them out of Babylon in order to rebuild the 00:26:39.73\00:26:44.00 sanctuary. You mentioned something earlier also, in Revelation 11:1, and that is, 00:26:44.10\00:26:49.07 after this great Babylonian. I'm sorry, after this great disappointment with the 00:26:49.17\00:26:56.31 Babylonian exile, so to speak, spiritually, the very next thing, this rise and mesh of the 00:26:56.41\00:27:01.12 temple of God. And that's what people began to do. And there are more and more and more 00:27:01.22\00:27:05.62 people doing it today and discovering the sanctuary is the system that helps explain 00:27:05.72\00:27:09.49 everything. CHRIS: And so, as we conclude, we have hope by spending time studying the 00:27:09.59\00:27:15.50 sanctuary. And just like we're in the doctor's office and he flips the little switch and 00:27:15.60\00:27:20.30 says, "Number one or number two," we can take this opportunity to choose number one 00:27:20.40\00:27:26.54 - and number one being, building our foundation upon the sanctuary. Let's have prayer, 00:27:26.64\00:27:33.65 Pastor Karl, and ask God to show us and point us in that right direction. Let's pray. Heavenly 00:27:33.75\00:27:40.59 Father, we are so thankful that we could turn our eyes toward heaven and know that there is a 00:27:40.69\00:27:47.50 God in heaven Who sits on the throne in the sanctuary Who wants to have a relationship 00:27:47.60\00:27:52.90 with us and Who is sending His Son soon to take us home. Please, help us to embrace that 00:27:53.00\00:27:59.61 hope today, we pray in Jesus' name, amen. PASTOR KARL: Amen. 00:27:59.71\00:28:03.81 CHRIS: Dear friends, the God of heaven, the Creator of the universe, desires to have a 00:28:07.88\00:28:13.59 personal relationship with you. He has set a framework, a foundation called the sanctuary 00:28:13.69\00:28:20.00 to teach us about how we can have relationship with Him. I want to offer you the book Where 00:28:20.10\00:28:26.13 God and I Meet: The Sanctuary. This book looks closely at the sanctuary, its components, and 00:28:26.23\00:28:35.48 what it means for each of us as individuals. Here's the information you need to receive 00:28:35.58\00:28:41.68 today's offer. 00:28:41.78\00:28:42.88 CHRIS: The sanctuary is a real place that provides a real foundation for the troublest 00:29:23.43\00:29:28.83 times in which we live. Dear friends, God is calling upon you to place your foundation on that 00:29:28.93\00:29:36.37 rock. Pastor Karl, thank you so much for being here and helping us to see this more 00:29:36.47\00:29:42.24 clearly. PASTOR KARL: It's been great. CHRIS: My dear friends, I hope you enjoyed the program 00:29:42.34\00:29:46.18 this week. I invite you to join us again next week. Until then, remember, it is written: "Man 00:29:46.28\00:29:53.89 shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:29:53.99\00:30:00.76
