>>ANNOUNCER: IT HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME... 00:00:12.27\00:00:14.94 GOD'S BOOK, THE BIBLE. 00:00:15.64\00:00:18.58 STILL RELEVANT IN TODAY'S COMPLEX WORLD. 00:00:19.21\00:00:22.58 IT IS WRITTEN . . . 00:00:25.22\00:00:26.29 SHARING MESSAGES OF HOPE AROUND THE WORLD. 00:00:26.86\00:00:30.73 As we are just days away from the new year, I am wondering if 00:00:39.43\00:00:43.77 any of you will fall into the New Year's resolution trap You know, it's that trap 00:00:43.87\00:00:47.44 of making a commitment to do something, only to break that 00:00:47.54\00:00:51.65 commitment just days into the New Year. Today, I would like to explore a passage that is 00:00:51.75\00:00:56.65 a well-known Bible passage. I believe that the message of this 00:00:56.75\00:01:00.52 passage is one of hope. In Matthew 5:13, it says this, 00:01:00.62\00:01:12.07 This is just one short verse taken from the Sermon on the 00:01:26.51\00:01:31.39 Mount, a sermon that extends through the majority of chapters 00:01:31.49\00:01:35.46 5-7 in the book of Matthew. Right here at the beginning of that sermon, Jesus says you are 00:01:35.56\00:01:42.23 the salt of the earth. This saying has been an interesting 00:01:42.33\00:01:48.27 saying to study, for scholars, commentators, and the like are not sure what exactly 00:01:48.37\00:01:54.28 he meant. Because in those times there were many different uses 00:01:54.38\00:02:00.58 for salt. What kinds of uses for salt were there in that time? 00:02:00.68\00:02:05.22 Most of us are familiar with the first use of salt as a seasoning, the trusty 00:02:05.32\00:02:09.89 sodium chloride or table salt. It functions as an enhancer of 00:02:09.99\00:02:16.40 the flavors around it. Besides contributing its own basic "salty" taste, salt brings 00:02:16.50\00:02:22.34 out natural flavors and makes foods more palatable and acceptable. This is 00:02:22.44\00:02:29.08 why some people, of whom I am not one of, put salt on their 00:02:29.18\00:02:33.92 watermelon or cantaloupe. In fact, salt is even used in some of the most popular desserts. 00:02:34.02\00:02:39.72 The beloved Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe, 00:02:39.82\00:02:44.73 calls for 1 teaspoon of salt. The famous Betty Crocker Apple Pie calls for salt. You 00:02:44.83\00:02:51.87 see, salt enhances all the flavors around it. Yet it is important to note that 00:02:51.97\00:02:58.94 it is also the most dominant of all seasonings. In an 00:02:59.04\00:03:02.81 experiment to test this theory, I took equal parts of sugar and 00:03:02.91\00:03:08.22 salt and then tasted it. Let me guarantee you my friends, the 00:03:08.32\00:03:13.59 only thing I could taste was salt. 00:03:13.69\00:03:16.42 In fact, so important is salt that it is an essential element 00:03:17.59\00:03:21.16 for human and animal life. And this essential element if not consumed in the right 00:03:21.26\00:03:27.37 quantities can cause problems If there is a lack of sodium, it 00:03:27.47\00:03:32.51 causes hyponatremia, which can lead to death. If there is too much sodium, it too 00:03:32.61\00:03:38.08 can lead to high blood pressure among other things also equally 00:03:38.18\00:03:41.35 dangerous to the health. Salt was and is also used for preserving In ancient 00:03:41.45\00:03:48.76 times, when refrigeration and many other modern methods of 00:03:48.86\00:03:53.90 preserving food were unknown, salt was of even greater value than it is today. They would 00:03:54.00\00:03:59.73 pack the food in salt, and the salt would leach out any water, while itself acting 00:03:59.83\00:04:05.21 as a preserving agent and keep the food until it was ready to 00:04:05.31\00:04:11.71 be used. In fact, the high osmotic content of salt inhibits bacterial and fungal growth When 00:04:11.81\00:04:18.72 it was time to use the food, it would simply be soaked in water 00:04:18.82\00:04:22.82 to help remove all of the salt. Interestingly, all animal sacrifices and grain 00:04:22.92\00:04:28.63 offerings were required to be seasoned with salt What does 00:04:28.73\00:04:35.07 this have to do with preservation? Many times in the OT the Bible refers to the 00:04:35.17\00:04:42.38 covenant of salt or a covenant made with salt. The reason that 00:04:42.48\00:04:49.65 salt was used in a covenant agreement was because of its preserving qualities. It was to 00:04:49.75\00:04:55.46 indicate God's everlasting promise and the fact that His promises never spoil. 00:04:55.56\00:05:04.63 Yet salt was used for another process and that is the process 00:05:06.50\00:05:10.31 of purifying. In 2 Kings 2:20-23 a story of Elisha is recorded, 00:05:10.41\00:05:17.58 Elisha throws salt into the bad and poisonous pool of Jericho, 00:05:51.81\00:05:58.25 why? To purify it or heal it. In ancient times newborn babies were rubbed with salt, in the 00:05:58.35\00:06:04.56 belief that this caused the skin to be drier, firmer, and cleaner 00:06:04.66\00:06:10.07 - freeing it from all impurities. Even today in natural remedies and even 00:06:10.17\00:06:16.67 at modern spas they use salt as a type of salt rub to polish and 00:06:16.77\00:06:23.58 purify the skin. In addition to these uses, another is for salt as a fertilizer. Please 00:06:23.68\00:06:32.39 listen carefully - don't go and take your bag of salt and put it 00:06:32.49\00:06:36.96 on your garden - your garden probably won't like that very much. You say how is 00:06:37.06\00:06:41.93 salt a fertilizer. While most of us are familiar with sodium 00:06:42.03\00:06:48.37 chloride, table salt - some of us may be unfamiliar with potassium chloride. It is 00:06:48.47\00:06:55.58 another salt, found naturally as Sylvite. And Potassium Chloride 00:06:55.68\00:07:02.22 is very effective as a fertilizer as potassium is very important for the growth 00:07:02.32\00:07:07.89 and health of plants. Yet while potassium is live giving and 00:07:07.99\00:07:14.20 important in fertilizer for plants, you could say that it is also important as fertilizer or 00:07:14.30\00:07:20.80 fuel for a human - as potassium is an essential mineral 00:07:20.90\00:07:26.88 macronutrient in the human body. However if it is administered improperly and in too 00:07:26.98\00:07:32.88 great a quantity, it is lethal. Potassium chloride has been used 00:07:32.98\00:07:39.72 in places where capital punishment by lethal injection 00:07:39.82\00:07:45.09 is administered. So really what does this have to do with anything? I mean, great we got a 00:07:46.53\00:07:52.10 lesson on the uses of salt, but how does that apply to the 00:07:52.20\00:07:56.77 passage? Friends Jesus says you are the salt of the earth; we are the salt of the earth. 00:07:56.87\00:08:05.81 I want you to notice with utmost clarity.that Jesus does not 00:08:05.91\00:08:11.62 counsel us to be salt, He does not commend us to be salt, He does not advise that we be salt, 00:08:11.72\00:08:18.63 He does not even command us to become salt. No. He says you are 00:08:18.73\00:08:26.13 salt. Do you hear that, you are salt? In the original language, this is a present tense 00:08:26.23\00:08:31.91 verb. Quite literally it says you, plural, you yourselves are 00:08:32.01\00:08:39.65 salt. Jesus by using the second plural pronoun with the second 00:08:39.75\00:08:46.29 plural verb places emphasis on the present reality that you are salt. And because Jesus did not 00:08:46.39\00:08:54.93 specify what kind of salt we can take it in its broadest sense. 00:08:55.00\00:09:03.27 You are: a Seasoning to flavor and enhance what is around you, 00:09:03.37\00:09:09.98 you are counter cultural, not adaptive to today's corrupted culture. You are a preservative, 00:09:10.08\00:09:20.26 through your life; you give a message that preserves people 00:09:20.36\00:09:25.56 for the second coming You are a purifier. By sharing a life of 00:09:25.66\00:09:34.50 hope in Jesus, it helps people make a decision for Jesus to be purified by him You are a 00:09:34.60\00:09:40.21 fertilizer. By your life and what you do, you help and encourage growth in 00:09:40.31\00:09:48.52 those around you. Remember it must be used in proper measure. 00:09:48.62\00:09:56.26 Too much and it kills; too little and it starves. My friends by our very nature Jesus 00:09:56.36\00:10:03.87 says we are salt, by virtue of being attached and committed to 00:10:03.97\00:10:12.07 Him. Friends we must not detach ourselves from Jesus Christ 00:10:12.17\00:10:15.78 because if we are detached from Jesus.we lose our saltiness. We lose our flavor. We are 00:10:15.88\00:10:22.78 salt if we are Christians, if we have committed to Jesus. If we 00:10:22.88\00:10:31.33 have lost our saltiness, we have lost our connection with Christ. 00:10:31.43\00:10:38.90 Have you lost that connection? Or maybe, you've never had that 00:10:40.40\00:10:44.24 connection. Today is a perfect time for renewal in Jesus. This 00:10:44.34\00:10:51.68 is not a resolution to be broken, but a decision to allow Jesus us to change us and 00:10:51.78\00:10:58.55 have us be the salt of the earth. We live in the world but 00:10:58.65\00:11:07.40 need to know who we are. And that is usually seen in the small things that we do. It is 00:11:07.50\00:11:14.54 in the everyday little things that we make a difference in the 00:11:14.64\00:11:19.27 world around us. In the book, Say please, Say Thank You The 00:11:19.37\00:11:25.95 Respect we Owe One Another: The author Donald McCullough has 00:11:26.05\00:11:31.85 this to say - Jesus says in Matthew 7:20, by their fruits you will know them. This is 00:12:16.97\00:12:24.44 why, as we look at a new year, Jesus says you are the salt of 00:12:24.54\00:12:32.61 the earth. Jesus calls us to make a difference in the small things. Jesus can make you 00:12:32.71\00:12:39.05 new. He can make me new. We can't be re-seasoned, but Jesus 00:12:39.15\00:12:49.33 can make us new again that we can truly be the salt of the earth. Is that your desire 00:12:49.43\00:12:57.21 today? Is the face that I see in the mirror 00:13:03.45\00:13:08.22 The one I want others to see? 00:13:08.58\00:13:14.69 Do I show in the way that I walk in my life 00:13:15.49\00:13:22.26 Love that you've given to me? 00:13:22.60\00:13:29.34 My heart's desire's to be like You 00:13:30.41\00:13:35.98 In all that I do, all I am. 00:13:36.24\00:13:43.99 Do they see Jesus in me? 00:13:44.82\00:13:51.23 Do they recognize Your face? 00:13:51.66\00:13:57.23 Do I communicate Your love and Your grace? 00:13:57.57\00:14:09.14 Do I reflect who You are 00:14:09.38\00:14:15.75 In the way I choose to be? 00:14:15.98\00:14:21.76 Do they see Jesus, Jesus in me? 00:14:22.09\00:14:34.87 Well, it's amazing that you'd ever use me, 00:14:40.91\00:14:47.12 But use me the way You will. 00:14:47.38\00:14:52.25 Help me to hold out a heart of compassion and grace, 00:14:52.55\00:14:59.29 A heart that Your Spirit fills. 00:14:59.56\00:15:04.97 May I show forgiveness and mercy 00:15:05.23\00:15:11.07 The same way You've shown it to me. 00:15:11.34\00:15:19.31 Do they see Jesus in me? 00:15:19.58\00:15:25.85 Do they recognize Your face? 00:15:26.15\00:15:31.43 Do I communicate Your love and Your grace? 00:15:31.93\00:15:43.00 Do I reflect who You are 00:15:43.77\00:15:49.34 In the way I choose to be? 00:15:50.25\00:15:55.48 Do they see Jesus, Jesus in me? 00:15:55.92\00:16:08.00 Well, I want to show all the world that You are 00:16:08.63\00:16:14.57 The reason I live and breathe, 00:16:14.90\00:16:20.04 So You'll be the One that they see 00:16:20.78\00:16:25.81 When they see me. 00:16:26.65\00:16:31.09 Do they see Jesus in me? 00:16:31.82\00:16:37.39 Do they recognize Your face? 00:16:37.79\00:16:43.03 Do I communicate Your love and your grace? 00:16:43.63\00:16:54.71 Do I reflect who You are 00:16:55.24\00:17:01.05 In the way I choose to be? 00:17:01.32\00:17:07.46 Do they see Jesus, Jesus in me? 00:17:07.79\00:17:28.61 >>Chris: Do they see Jesus in me? The appeal of the song, friends, matches the 00:17:35.48\00:17:41.69 words of Jesus: "You are the salt of the earth." Through our 00:17:41.79\00:17:50.10 daily activities, through the little things we do on a day-to-day basis, do 00:17:50.20\00:17:55.20 people see Jesus in me? The call of Jesus is that we are the salt 00:17:55.30\00:18:04.45 of the earth, that we are change agents in everything that we do. 00:18:04.55\00:18:11.42 When people think about spending time with you, does it bring joy to them? When people think 00:18:11.52\00:18:15.52 about being around you, do they desire to be around you because 00:18:15.62\00:18:19.79 you bring this atmosphere of joy and peace and kindness? That's what it means to be the 00:18:19.89\00:18:26.10 salt of the earth, to be someone who changes lives on a daily 00:18:26.20\00:18:33.61 basis through those small things in life. Today Jesus is calling 00:18:33.71\00:18:40.12 you to make a decision to follow Him. Because by following Him, you are the salt of the 00:18:40.22\00:18:47.86 earth. He can renew you in this new year and help you start 00:18:47.96\00:18:55.83 over. Is that something you'd like to do today? I invite you to pray with me. Heavenly 00:18:55.93\00:19:00.90 Father, we are so thankful that Jesus came to die for our sins. 00:19:01.00\00:19:06.51 We are so thankful that through Jesus, we can start over. And we 00:19:06.61\00:19:12.71 are thankful through our relationship with Him that we are the salt of the earth. So 00:19:12.81\00:19:20.19 just now, we give our lives to You, we submit to You and we ask 00:19:20.29\00:19:25.56 that Jesus would change us thoroughly and completely, that we might be the salt of the 00:19:25.66\00:19:32.87 earth. Friends, you know, one of the most common New Year's 00:19:49.58\00:19:53.05 resolutions is a resolution to lose weight. And often, that weight that needs to be lost is 00:19:53.15\00:19:57.46 the average five to ten pounds that someone gains during the 00:19:57.56\00:20:02.73 holiday season. The holiday season is a most challenging time to continue with a healthy 00:20:02.83\00:20:08.37 diet and healthy lifestyle. Here at It Is Written Canada, we are 00:20:08.47\00:20:13.74 committed to not only teaching people about the gospel of Jesus 00:20:13.84\00:20:18.98 Christ and having a healthy spiritual life, but also to have a healthy physical life. In 00:20:19.08\00:20:24.85 Third John 2, God tells us that He wants us to prosper and be in 00:20:24.95\00:20:29.69 good health. And that is our desire for you, to be in good health. You know, my 00:20:29.79\00:20:37.70 own personal journey has been one that has been most 00:20:37.80\00:20:43.14 challenging. And I have come to recognize my need for living a healthier lifestyle, 00:20:43.24\00:20:47.64 especially as it relates to my weight and my diet. And five 00:20:47.74\00:20:54.82 months ago, I made a renewed commitment. And through that renewed commitment, the Lord has 00:20:54.92\00:20:59.62 blessed that I've been able to lose thirty pounds. I have a 00:20:59.72\00:21:03.73 journey still ahead, but I want to invite you to go on that journey with me. Bev 00:21:03.83\00:21:09.86 Haines does our Live Healthy segments. And one of the principles that she 00:21:09.96\00:21:16.04 teaches is the principle of good nutrition. Good nutrition is one 00:21:16.14\00:21:24.08 aspect of something we would call the principles of health. And over the next eight 00:21:24.18\00:21:30.22 weeks, we will look at those eight principles of health that 00:21:30.32\00:21:35.06 will lead to optimal physical life. I hope you enjoy this segment, and that you 00:21:35.16\00:21:41.76 don't just make a resolution to change, but rather, you make a 00:21:41.86\00:21:46.40 covenant with God, that He would give you the strength to change 00:21:46.50\00:21:50.24 your lifestyle and live healthy. 00:21:50.34\00:21:54.14 >>Bev: Hi everyone The NEWSTART acronym coined by Weimar 00:22:12.66\00:22:21.34 Institute, a wellness centre located in California. In today's segment, we're focusing 00:22:21.44\00:22:25.74 on N for Nutrition. A healthy lifestyle starts with good 00:22:25.84\00:22:31.25 nutrition and, when we talk about how to eat well, we like to break it all down into the 00:22:31.35\00:22:35.25 three main components of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. We need all 00:22:35.35\00:22:39.79 three for a balanced and healthy diet. Now, when you hear me 00:22:39.89\00:22:44.23 talking about diet, I'm not referring to dieting (I don't believe in dieting!) but, 00:22:44.33\00:22:49.43 rather, your overall every-day eating pattern. Well, let's 00:22:49.53\00:22:53.17 start with carbohydrates, or "carbs" for short. Over the past several years, we've been 00:22:53.27\00:22:57.44 hearing a lot about high-protein, low-carbohydrate 00:22:57.54\00:23:01.01 diets. Well, I'm glad that that particular craze is over, 00:23:01.11\00:23:04.95 because your body absolutely, positively needs carbohydrates to function. In fact, carbs 00:23:05.05\00:23:09.98 are your body's preferred fuel for optimal performance, so it's 00:23:10.09\00:23:13.92 really important that you eat enough carbs each and every day. 00:23:14.02\00:23:18.73 Now, I'm talking about the good carbs! Things like delicious 00:23:18.83\00:23:22.36 whole-grain breads and whole-grain pastas; tasty brown or wild rice, and other whole 00:23:22.46\00:23:27.34 grain cereals like oats, millet, rye - have you heard of quinoa 00:23:27.44\00:23:31.71 and amaranth?; then there are succulent, juicy fruits - my favourites are mangos, 00:23:31.81\00:23:37.21 golden kiwis, and cherries; and then scrumptious vegetables - I 00:23:37.31\00:23:41.38 love zucchini, eggplant, and sweet yams. And Bill, if you haven't tried whole 00:23:41.48\00:23:45.15 wheat pasta as yet, you really must! It's so delicious! The 00:23:45.25\00:23:50.39 best thing for us is to stay away from the more processed foods - you know, those 00:23:50.49\00:23:54.86 convenience foods in the crinkly bags and the enticing-looking 00:23:54.96\00:23:59.20 boxes. Sure, they might save us time when we're cooking or snacking, but those foods 00:23:59.30\00:24:03.64 are full of salt, sugars, fats and chemical preservatives. 00:24:03.74\00:24:08.14 Things that our bodies really don't need. What are bodies do need, though, are the 00:24:08.24\00:24:12.45 vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants and phytochemicals 00:24:12.55\00:24:16.75 that are found readily in plant foods. Now, when it comes to fats, a little goes a 00:24:16.85\00:24:22.56 long way, and there are some fats that are healthier than 00:24:22.66\00:24:25.99 others. When the fat comes from natural plant sources such as avocadoes, nuts, seeds, 00:24:26.09\00:24:31.33 and olives, those are healthy choices. When it comes to 00:24:31.43\00:24:36.07 protein, if you're looking for optimal health, you'll want to include more plant-based 00:24:36.17\00:24:39.67 protein sources rather than animal-based sources Studies 00:24:39.77\00:24:44.38 show that the healthiest diet is one that is high in carbohydrates, low in fat 00:24:44.48\00:24:48.25 and moderate in protein. And, I find it interesting - and 00:24:48.35\00:24:53.42 wonderful - that most of the major health organizations are now encouraging people to 00:24:53.52\00:24:57.43 include more plant-based foods in their every-day eating. Here 00:24:57.53\00:25:02.96 are some easy, delicious ways of incorporating plant-based proteins into your diet: 00:25:03.06\00:25:07.24 Purchase a good vegetarian cookbook - there are lots of them in your local book 00:25:07.34\00:25:13.31 store. Toss some beans into your salads, rice and pasta dishes - 00:25:13.41\00:25:19.58 delicious ones to try are chick peas or garbanzo beans, kidney beans, black beans. Beans 00:25:19.68\00:25:25.05 are a powerhouse of good protein. Adapt your favourite 00:25:25.15\00:25:30.86 meat-based recipe by using soy products, gluten. Shake it up - blend some soft tofu 00:25:30.96\00:25:37.10 with fruits and one of the delicious soy, rice or almond 00:25:37.20\00:25:42.24 milks - delicious!
