>>Announcer: It has stood the test of time. 00:00:11.31\00:00:14.31 God's book, The Bible 00:00:14.78\00:00:17.78 Still relevant in today's complex world 00:00:18.51\00:00:22.35 It Is Written 00:00:24.22\00:00:25.32 Sharing messages of hope around the world! 00:00:25.79\00:00:29.82 Now I want you to stick with me today, but how would you react 00:00:38.83\00:00:43.20 if I read these words? 00:00:43.30\00:00:45.07 Doesn't that make any sense? No? Let's try this: 00:01:19.51\00:01:23.41 How about that? No? What's the matter, have you not brushed up 00:01:50.14\00:01:54.88 on your Greek lately? What about your Latin? I don't speak latin and have probably done a 00:01:54.98\00:02:01.15 very poor job myself. 00:02:01.25\00:02:04.45 What I read to you in both cases was Revelation 14:13. First in 00:02:06.15\00:02:11.29 Koine Greek - what the New Testament was originally written 00:02:11.39\00:02:15.26 in, then I read in Latin. The predicament of not understanding the scriptures that you just 00:02:15.36\00:02:19.97 experienced just a moment ago is the same predicament of all of 00:02:20.07\00:02:24.34 England in the 16th century and before. There was no Bible 00:02:24.44\00:02:29.94 readily available in English. Only Wycliffe had translated it into English, but that was 00:02:30.05\00:02:37.22 handwritten and not so easily attainable. So - for the common 00:02:37.32\00:02:43.43 people, their only source of truth and the Word of God was through the clergy. Then 00:02:43.53\00:02:49.76 in about 1520 onto the scene came a Roman Catholic priest who 00:02:49.86\00:02:55.47 had been educated at Oxford University and Cambridge as well. He believed that 00:02:55.57\00:03:00.14 all men should be able to have the scriptures in their native 00:03:00.24\00:03:05.45 tongue. He sympathized with the principles of the Reformation 00:03:05.55\00:03:08.58 and his preaching put him at odds with many in the clergy His 00:03:08.68\00:03:14.56 name was William Tyndale. He is often not recognized for his contributions in the 00:03:14.66\00:03:19.46 Reformation, some scholars, however, refer to him as the 00:03:19.56\00:03:23.57 "father of the English Reformation," or as "the apostle to England." He believed that 00:03:23.67\00:03:30.47 God had called him to bring to the people of England the Bible 00:03:30.57\00:03:35.14 in English. So William Tydale went to the bishop of London, 00:03:35.24\00:03:42.55 Cuthbert Tunstall to request the blessing of the church in his translation. No such 00:03:42.65\00:03:47.86 blessing was to be given. So Tyndale translated anyway. He 00:03:47.96\00:03:57.27 was financed for this immense project by a good friend of his, who was also a port 00:03:57.37\00:04:02.70 merchant, Sir Humphrey Monmouth. Once, over dinner, while arguing 00:04:02.80\00:04:09.28 with another priest, the priest taunted Tyndale with the statement, "We are better 00:04:09.38\00:04:15.22 to be without God's laws than the Pope's". Tyndale was so 00:04:15.32\00:04:20.92 infuriated by this priest, that he replied, "I defy the Pope and all his laws. If God spare my 00:04:21.02\00:04:26.86 life ere many years, I will cause the boy that drives the 00:04:26.96\00:04:31.50 plow to know more of the scriptures than you!" Because the situation grew far too 00:04:31.60\00:04:38.11 dangerous in England, Tyndale knew that he must move his base 00:04:38.21\00:04:43.11 of translating somewhere else. It is difficult to know exactly 00:04:43.21\00:04:49.48 where Tyndale did all of his work because he was a master of hiding and moving before 00:04:49.58\00:04:55.29 any authorities could find him. However what is clear is that 00:04:55.39\00:05:00.36 Tyndale visited Hamburg and Wittenburg, Germany - where in Wittenburg he met with 00:05:00.46\00:05:05.97 Martin Luther. But Tyndale continued his work of translation, until finally 00:05:06.07\00:05:11.17 he began to print that Bible somewhere in Cologne. His friend 00:05:11.27\00:05:16.85 Humphrey Monmouth continued to finance him and helped get the 00:05:16.95\00:05:21.12 Bibles into England by smuggling them in on grain shipments. 00:05:21.22\00:05:29.96 As the word of God began to spread, it caused great anxiety 00:05:30.46\00:05:35.23 among the clergy, as well as the political leadership of the country. King Henry VIII, who 00:05:35.33\00:05:40.24 was the king of England at the time, was in the midst of controversy himself, he 00:05:40.34\00:05:44.54 had married his dead brothers wife, Catherine of Aragon who 00:05:44.64\00:05:48.54 had produced no male heir to the throne. So he went about trying 00:05:48.64\00:05:53.31 to get the pope to allow a divorce. It was truly a big mess. It was in this political 00:05:53.42\00:05:59.49 setting that the English Bible made inroads to England While at 00:05:59.59\00:06:06.09 first, King Henry was very enchanted with Tyndale, when he found that Tyndale would not 00:06:06.19\00:06:10.10 support his divorce claims, he was infuriated Meanwhile Tyndale 00:06:10.20\00:06:15.27 continued to translate and print the English Bible In 1525, the 00:06:15.37\00:06:21.84 English NT was finished and made its way all across England. Tyndale continued his work 00:06:21.94\00:06:27.82 and united his efforts with people like John Frith and Miles 00:06:27.92\00:06:35.19 Coverdale. Work began on the OT and all was going well. A new bishop came to London, 00:06:35.29\00:06:43.63 Bishop Stokesly - he was a cruel man, who wanted one thing more 00:06:43.73\00:06:48.97 than any other and that was the capture of William Tyndale. Tyndale was a difficult 00:06:49.07\00:06:55.34 man to find, for he knew there were many who sought after his 00:06:55.44\00:07:00.45 life. He was working in Worms and the completion of the Old Testament was to come 00:07:00.55\00:07:05.32 soon. While working there, Tyndale had found a new friend, 00:07:05.42\00:07:10.06 who helped him a great deal, Henry Phillips, who was also an Englishmen. One day as 00:07:10.16\00:07:16.36 Henry and William were returning from a church service where 00:07:16.46\00:07:20.10 William had preached - Henry insisted upon buying lunch for William Tyndale. As they 00:07:20.20\00:07:24.54 walked, soldiers came capturing William, thinking his friend to 00:07:24.64\00:07:30.68 be in grave danger he called for Henry to run, but he simply 00:07:30.78\00:07:36.45 replied, this is the man. Unbeknowst to William Tyndale, he had been betrayed by Henry 00:07:36.55\00:07:44.56 Phillips, who had been financed by Bishop Stokesly. 00:07:44.66\00:07:50.33 William Tyndale was taken to Vilvoorden Castle in Belgium 00:07:52.27\00:07:59.01 where he was arrested and imprisoned. Let me read to you the charges that went against 00:07:59.11\00:08:05.31 Tyndale: First: He maintains that faith alone justifies. 00:08:05.41\00:08:11.19 Second: He maintains that to believe in the forgiveness of sins and to embrace the mercy 00:08:11.29\00:08:16.06 offered in the Gospel, is enough for salvation. Third: He 00:08:16.16\00:08:20.96 asserts that human traditions cannot bind the conscience, except where their neglect 00:08:21.03\00:08:26.00 might occasion scandal. Fourth: He affirms the freedom of the 00:08:26.10\00:08:31.67 will. Fifth: He denies that there is any purgatory. Sixth: 00:08:31.77\00:08:37.91 He affirms that neither the Virgin nor the Saints pray for us in their own person. 00:08:38.01\00:08:43.45 Seventh: He asserts that neither the Virgin nor the Saints should 00:08:43.55\00:08:48.02 be invoked by us. He had been labeled a heretic, and on October 6, 1536 - William 00:08:48.12\00:08:58.90 Tyndale was strangled and then burned at the stake. He died a 00:08:59.00\00:09:04.41 martyr's death - trying to bring the Bible to the common people in the common language. In 00:09:04.51\00:09:11.35 1537, Miles Coverdale finished the work of William Tyndale and 00:09:11.45\00:09:17.12 the entire English Bible made its way across England This time 00:09:17.22\00:09:23.66 with the stamp of approval of the king. The Tyndale Bible was such a good translation that it 00:09:23.76\00:09:29.50 was the foundation work for the King James Bible, which was 00:09:29.60\00:09:35.17 commissioned in 1611. William Tyndale.he was a man willing to die for his faith, a man 00:09:35.27\00:09:43.01 willing to die to bring the Word of God to the common people. 00:09:43.11\00:09:50.22 Please open your Bibles to Revelation chapter 14 and verse 00:09:52.09\00:10:03.26 13 A simple and concise statement pronouncing a blessing 00:10:21.12\00:10:26.12 on those who die in the Lord. I would like to point out three items of interest in this text. 00:10:26.22\00:10:34.20 The phrase "in the Lord." The first blessing is pronounced on 00:10:34.30\00:10:39.97 those who die in the Lord. The Greek word in can be translated within, among, or for. The 00:10:40.07\00:10:48.31 point is this, those who have their full trust and faith in 00:10:48.41\00:10:54.35 the Lord Jesus Christ, who die before his return are blessed. Notice the context of the 00:10:54.45\00:11:01.39 passage, Revelation 14:12 00:11:01.49\00:11:06.33 Those who die in the Lord or for the Lord are those who have been 00:11:15.24\00:11:21.14 true to Him, by having their faith in the reality that we are saved by our faith in Him 00:11:21.24\00:11:26.41 and the fruit of that faith is their obedience to Jesus. 00:11:26.51\00:11:33.12 Sometimes the idea of faith is made to be very complicated. 00:11:34.72\00:11:38.19 However it doesn't need to be complicated. The word in Greek for faith and belief 00:11:38.29\00:11:43.37 are the same word. The Bible is quite simple, and defines faith 00:11:43.47\00:11:52.21 in Hebrews 11:1 states, 00:11:52.31\00:11:59.55 The word substance can be translated confidence, or foundation. Let's read it 00:12:08.12\00:12:11.93 again with one of these other definitions, 00:12:12.03\00:12:14.73 Faith in Jesus can be summarized by saying that he is the very 00:12:22.24\00:12:26.11 foundation, the very substance, the very essence of who you are. 00:12:26.21\00:12:32.51 Being in the Lord, literally means in Him. Your very nature is so much into Him that you 00:12:32.61\00:12:37.09 become like him. So, are you all about Jesus. Is He your very 00:12:37.19\00:12:44.26 foundation and substance? The second blessing is actually not found in the text, it is 00:12:44.36\00:12:58.04 in fact a glaring omission. Notice the text states that 00:12:58.14\00:13:05.98 those who die in the Lord are now resting from their labors, it does not say "blessed 00:13:06.08\00:13:12.62 are they who die in the Lord for now they reside in paradise with 00:13:12.72\00:13:18.09 Jesus." It is this glaring omission that I find very important to point out. We 00:13:18.19\00:13:24.70 had a whole series, Is Heaven for Real, where we covered this 00:13:24.80\00:13:30.87 topic. And you can go to our website ItIsWrittenCanada.ca and there you can find that 00:13:30.97\00:13:37.75 entire series. But it would seem to me that when we speak of 00:13:37.85\00:13:42.42 being blessed for being in the Lord, we would want to present the greatest and nicest gifts 00:13:42.52\00:13:47.96 that we will receive. And since we know that eternal life in the 00:13:48.06\00:13:54.56 paradise of heaven is the eventual destination of those found "in the Lord." Why does 00:13:54.63\00:13:59.73 the text not say, blessed are those who die in the Lord, for 00:13:59.83\00:14:03.64 now they are in paradise? Well we know the answer to that question It is because the Bible 00:14:03.74\00:14:08.88 is clear from cover to cover that when a person dies they go 00:14:08.98\00:14:13.95 to their rest awaiting their resurrection. KJV Ecclesiastes 00:14:14.05\00:14:19.02 9:5 KJV Psalm 6:5 00:14:29.96\00:14:36.60 Over and over again the Bible clearly points out that death is 00:14:44.55\00:14:49.08 a totally unconscious state of being where we await the coming of the Lord. And why is 00:14:49.18\00:14:59.19 this a blessing? Isaiah 57 answers such a question in verse 00:14:59.29\00:15:11.01 1 There is a blessing to those who have fallen asleep in Jesus 00:15:26.22\00:15:30.56 because they have been taken away from the evil of this world and await the return 00:15:30.66\00:15:37.67 of Jesus. 00:15:37.77\00:15:40.30 The third blessing is that "their works follow them." This point is intimately 00:15:42.94\00:15:52.21 tied to point number one. A person who is in the Lord will 00:15:52.31\00:15:59.05 have works that follow them. In other words they have a legacy. The legacy of William 00:15:59.15\00:16:04.36 Tyndale is the Bible in the language of the common people. 00:16:04.46\00:16:13.40 The legacy of Martin Luther is justification by faith alone. 00:16:13.50\00:16:18.14 The legacy of John Wesley is sanctification by faith. And the list goes on and on. But here 00:16:18.24\00:16:23.98 is the key question that we must ask of ourselves in this 2nd 00:16:24.08\00:16:31.02 beatitude of Revelation What is your legacy? Hmm. What is the legacy of this generation? 00:16:31.12\00:16:40.26 And What should it be? I don't know exactly, but I have some 00:16:40.36\00:16:48.64 ideas. How about this generation building a legacy of renewing a faith in the scriptures? The 00:16:48.74\00:16:57.65 statistics are difficult to come by for Canada alone, but when we 00:16:57.75\00:17:02.98 look at statistics for a belief in the Bible, they are startling. However in the 00:17:03.08\00:17:12.46 US 49% of those in the US don't believe the Bible is totally 00:17:12.56\00:17:20.94 accurate. 65% of the those without religious affiliation say that Satan is not a living 00:17:21.04\00:17:24.44 being but is a symbol of evil. 57% state that a good person can 00:17:24.54\00:17:30.71 earn his or her way into Heaven 51% assert that when Jesus Christ lived on earth, He 00:17:30.81\00:17:38.15 committed sins. (2004) But even more startling are the 00:17:38.25\00:17:43.49 statistics of those who are members of the church: 7% believe that God is the total 00:17:43.59\00:17:51.37 realization of personal human potential. 15% say God is no 00:17:51.47\00:17:58.77 longer involved in their life. By a 3-to-1 margin (64% vs. 22%) Christians adults said 00:17:58.87\00:18:05.71 truth is always relative to the person and their situation. 4% 00:18:05.81\00:18:11.85 of Christians said they had consulted a medium or spiritual 00:18:11.95\00:18:17.23 advisor within the past month. 61% of Christian adults view gambling as a morally 00:18:17.33\00:18:24.67 acceptable behavior. Friends what will be our legacy? A 00:18:24.77\00:18:33.68 people who are hypocrits, who say one thing and then do another. A people worried about 00:18:33.78\00:18:39.75 their own personal business and material possessions than that 00:18:39.85\00:18:43.92 of Christ's A people who have no time to be witnesses for Jesus 00:18:44.02\00:18:50.66 by living a loving Christ-centered life. What will be your legacy? What will be my 00:18:50.76\00:18:56.33 legacy? 00:18:56.43\00:18:58.97 William Tyndale died trying to bring the Word of God to 00:19:01.00\00:19:08.44 everyone. He was fulfilling the gospel commission. His very 00:19:08.54\00:19:10.91 essence, his very foundation was preaching the gospel. He knew he would die, but he knew 00:19:11.01\00:19:19.52 what his legacy would bring. As William Tyndale was being tied 00:19:19.62\00:19:25.96 to the stake, upon which he would be burned, his last words were, "Lord, open the king 00:19:26.06\00:19:35.07 of England's eyes." It was his very essence. We too, all know 00:19:35.17\00:19:45.01 that if the Lord doesn't come first, we will die. What is it that we are all about, what is 00:19:45.11\00:19:51.35 our very essence and foundation, what will be our legacy? It is 00:19:51.45\00:20:00.96 not too late to change. It is not too late for us to strive to leave a legacy like 00:20:01.03\00:20:06.30 that of our forefathers. Won't you join me today, in consecrating our lives 00:20:06.40\00:20:14.24 to be in the Lord and to leave a strong legacy? To be someone who 00:20:14.34\00:20:22.08 is found in Him.In Jesus and who's legacy and influence is 00:20:22.18\00:20:27.46 positive for the kingdom. The beatitudes of Revelation promise that you will be blessed 00:20:27.56\00:20:34.76 by leaving such a legacy. Lord, we want to be good people. We want to be 00:24:33.40\00:24:39.41 people who others love to be around. We want to be people who 00:24:39.51\00:24:46.15 are known for their love of Jesus. So change us, mold us, and make us into that people. 00:24:46.25\00:24:53.12 This is our prayer in Jesus' name, amen. 00:24:53.22\00:24:58.16 The book of Revelation is a blessing to read, a blessing to 00:25:19.85\00:25:24.15 understand, and a blessing to follow the leading of Jesus.
