Robertson McQuilkin married the love of his life, 00:00:39.03\00:00:43.27 Muriel. Together they had enjoyed many years together. He was able to serve in a 00:00:43.37\00:00:47.31 ministry of education. After being the head master of an 00:00:47.41\00:00:51.88 institution, he and his wife served as missionaries in Japan. They he returned to the 00:00:51.98\00:00:57.89 United States and he enjoyed a long and successful tenure from 00:00:57.99\00:01:02.02 1968 through 1990 as the president of Columbia International University 00:01:02.12\00:01:09.73 in Columbia, South Carolina. His term came to end, not because he 00:01:09.83\00:01:14.74 was removed or fired, but rather he resigned from the position. 00:01:14.84\00:01:21.14 Why would someone who was truly at the pinnacle of his career simply resign? Because of 00:01:21.24\00:01:27.18 a promise, because of a commitment. During those final 00:01:27.28\00:01:33.52 years, his wife, Muriel, began showing signs of Alzheimer's. It was little things here and 00:01:33.62\00:01:39.26 there. Forgetfulness, doing irrational things. It finally 00:01:39.36\00:01:45.03 came to the point that Muriel felt insecure without her husband around her. So, J. 00:01:45.13\00:01:52.34 Robertson McQuilkin made what many would consider a hard decision and resigned 00:01:52.44\00:01:58.91 from his successful position to be there full time for his wife. 00:01:59.01\00:02:05.52 Listen to his own words from his memoir, A Promise Kept, " The decision was made, in 00:02:05.62\00:02:12.56 a way, 42 years ago when I promised to care for Muriel 'in 00:02:12.66\00:02:16.40 sickness and in health... till death do us part.' So... as a man of my word, integrity has 00:02:16.50\00:02:20.50 something to do with it. But so does fairness. She has cared for 00:02:20.60\00:02:27.64 me fully and sacrificially all these years; if I cared for her for the next 40 years I 00:02:27.74\00:02:33.15 would not be out of her debt. Duty, however, can be grim and 00:02:33.25\00:02:39.42 stoic. But, there is more: I love Muriel. She is a delight to 00:02:39.52\00:02:44.93 me- her childlike dependence and confidence in me, her warm love, occasional flashes of that 00:02:45.03\00:02:50.30 wit I used to relish so, her happy spirit and tough resilience in the face of 00:02:50.40\00:02:55.64 her continual distressing frustration. I don't have to care for her. I get to. 00:02:55.74\00:03:03.21 It is a high honor to care for so wonderful a person." Muriel 00:03:03.31\00:03:09.05 died under the care of the one who committed and promised, "until death do us part." 00:03:09.15\00:03:19.23 A story such as this begs us to question the truthfulness of the 00:03:19.73\00:03:23.10 old adage; Promises are like piecrust, they are made to be broken. Is this really 00:03:23.20\00:03:29.47 true? J. Robertson McQuilkin didn't think so. He kept his 00:03:29.57\00:03:34.81 promise, even though it meant great sacrifice on his part. The 00:03:34.91\00:03:42.22 Bible speaks of promises. In fact the Bible mentions the word, promise over 50 times. It 00:03:42.32\00:03:48.29 uses an even stronger word, covenant - which is a contract 00:03:48.39\00:03:52.96 or an agreement, over 300 times. The first use of the word covenant, in the Bible, is 00:03:53.06\00:03:58.80 found in the story we have been studying, the real and true 00:03:58.90\00:04:05.84 story of Noah. You'll remember that God made a covenant with Noah in Genesis 6:17-18, 00:04:05.94\00:04:20.02 Here God makes a covenant with Noah - a promise to save him in 00:04:47.42\00:04:53.09 this ark. We have studied Noah over the course of the last four programs - if you've 00:04:53.19\00:04:57.49 missed one of those programs, you can go to our website 00:04:57.59\00:04:59.29 www.itiswrittencanada.ca and find the programs or www.youtub.com/IIWCanada 00:04:59.39\00:05:08.07 and there you can watch the programs so you are caught up. 00:05:08.17\00:05:15.11 God establishes an agreement with Noah to save his family in the ark. And that is exactly 00:05:15.21\00:05:20.92 what He did. God gave Noah instructions, Noah was obedient 00:05:21.02\00:05:26.96 to those instructions and warned the people of the earth and then 00:05:27.06\00:05:32.56 built the ark, then God was faithful to His promise and through His grace, saved Noah 00:05:32.66\00:05:38.67 and his family and the representative animals of the 00:05:38.77\00:05:46.07 earth in the ark. Remember the flood teaches God's grace and mercy, although the whole earth 00:05:47.21\00:05:52.51 was absolutely corrupt, God extended an one hundred and 00:05:52.61\00:05:58.02 twenty year probationary period and He provided an escape.to get on the ark. It was just 00:05:58.12\00:06:05.63 one small act of faith and obedience. But the flood also 00:06:05.73\00:06:11.10 teaches us about God's justice.there is a day of reckoning; God must bring things 00:06:11.20\00:06:16.81 to an end. Jesus himself compared the last days to Noah's time. But the flood also teaches 00:06:16.91\00:06:21.78 us about a God who keeps promises. Noah, his family and 00:06:21.88\00:06:28.12 the representative animals were all safely on the ark. Notice how the story continues in 00:06:28.22\00:06:35.29 Genesis 7:17-24: 00:06:35.39\00:06:41.33 This flood was universal in its affect. The floodwater rose to 00:07:46.06\00:07:50.93 15 cubits above the mountaintops. That is over 8 meters above the highest 00:07:51.03\00:07:55.34 mountains. Also, notice what the Bible says, all earth dwelling 00:07:55.44\00:08:03.88 creatures and birds of the air died - all of mankind, except for Noah and his family 00:08:03.98\00:08:09.02 died in the flood. There were no stowaways on the ark. No one 00:08:09.12\00:08:13.82 else built a boat; there was no fight for control of the ark. God made a promise, He 00:08:13.92\00:08:19.63 made a covenant that only those who got on the ark would 00:08:19.73\00:08:27.44 survive. God was true to his word. Can you imagine what Noah and his family went through? The 00:08:27.54\00:08:32.74 thunder, the rolling seas, the pandemonium.yet through it all, 00:08:32.84\00:08:39.35 they had God's promise. Friend, today we have God's promises! 00:08:39.45\00:08:45.22 Are you facing a crisis.maybe a marriage is falling apart, maybe you have growing health 00:08:45.32\00:08:49.72 challenges. Jesus says come to Him and He will give you peace. 00:08:49.82\00:08:55.06 God is faithful. He was faithful to Noah and He will be faithful 00:08:55.16\00:09:01.47 to you. What happened next? Did God leave Noah to float around 00:09:02.77\00:09:08.98 on a boat forever? Of course not. Listen to how the story continues in Genesis 8:1-5 00:09:09.08\00:09:15.85 God didn't forget Noah, He remembered Noah. In this vast 00:10:00.80\00:10:05.10 universe of God's creation - He didn't forget Noah. Friend He won't and doesn't forget 00:10:05.20\00:10:12.41 you either. 00:10:12.51\00:10:14.11 The floods stop, the rain stops, the water coming from the earth 00:10:14.54\00:10:21.65 stops. The Bible says that God sent a wind upon the earth and the waters began to 00:10:21.75\00:10:26.22 recede. So much so, that the ark came to rest on the mountains of 00:10:26.32\00:10:31.49 Ararat as the tops of those mountains were exposed. The Bile 00:10:31.59\00:10:36.93 says that this episode lasted 150 days or 5 months. Can you imagine? Noah and his family on 00:10:37.03\00:10:45.51 a boat for 5 months? In addition, the animals that they cared for. Yet they 00:10:45.61\00:10:52.25 trusted in God. They knew that He was faithful, they trusted in 00:10:52.35\00:11:02.49 Him. As the ark came to rest there in the mountains of Ararat, there was still an 00:11:03.53\00:11:09.30 abundance of water on the earth. They waited in the ark another 00:11:09.40\00:11:14.80 three months to even see if they could leave the ark. So, the Bible tells us that Noah 00:11:14.90\00:11:19.61 would test to see if land was ready for them to disembark. 00:11:19.71\00:11:27.72 Genesis 8:6-12 Noah sent out messengers, so to speak, to see if the waters had receded 00:12:30.71\00:12:35.98 enough. He sent out a raven, which kept returning to the ark as long as there was no 00:12:36.08\00:12:40.49 place else to rest. He also sent a dove. I'm sure Noah and his 00:12:40.59\00:12:46.16 family, not to mention the animals, were all anxious to leave the boat and be on solid 00:12:46.26\00:12:51.47 ground. But he exercised patience. Noah trusted God, he 00:12:51.57\00:12:58.41 had faith in Him. Patience and faith, two very important qualities for those who follow 00:12:58.51\00:13:05.38 the Lord. That dove returned with a sign - a freshly plucked 00:13:05.48\00:13:11.99 olive leave. It was a true sign that the earth was soon to be inhabitable again. He sent 00:13:12.09\00:13:17.76 the dove out again, this time, never to return. The dove had 00:13:17.86\00:13:23.37 found a home outside of the ark. 00:13:23.47\00:13:26.33 Finally, after having spent just over a year in the ark, now they 00:13:27.50\00:13:31.37 could leave the ark to re-inhabit the earth. In Genesis 00:13:31.47\00:13:38.88 8:15-19 the story continues, 00:13:38.98\00:13:41.22 Now friends, there is an important observation to be made 00:14:19.22\00:14:24.09 here. Noah leaves the ark when He is told to by God. Noah's faith and obedience continued. 00:14:24.19\00:14:31.93 Too often friends, we are ready and anxious to listen to God, 00:14:32.03\00:14:35.74 but then once we have what we want or need or once the trouble 00:14:35.84\00:14:41.14 in our life is past, we forget all about Him. Once again, let's learn from Noah and 00:14:41.24\00:14:47.75 continue our listening to God at all times. Noah listens and they 00:14:47.85\00:14:53.86 leave the ark. When Noah and his family left the ark, what was Noah's first act? The 00:14:53.96\00:15:00.86 Bible records what Noah did first: Genesis 8:20, 00:15:00.96\00:15:08.77 Noah worshipped God. Noah made sacrifices to God. Noah acknowledged that God 00:15:22.78\00:15:28.59 is faithful. He kept first things first. Friends, it is a call for us. It is a 00:15:28.69\00:15:38.13 call for us to remember God at all times. We should spend time 00:15:38.23\00:15:43.27 with Him, in His Word and through prayer - in the good 00:15:43.37\00:15:49.14 times and the bad times. Always spend time with God. As Proverbs 00:15:49.24\00:15:54.55 3:5-6 says, The Lord will not let us down. Then God makes a promise to Noah. It is a 00:16:05.53\00:16:12.93 promise that we see evidence of even to today. Genesis 9:8-17 00:16:13.03\00:16:20.91 record that promise, 00:16:21.01\00:16:22.88 Did you hear that? God made a promise, He made a covenant. 00:18:02.61\00:18:08.82 Covenant is a contract or agreement. He promised that the earth would never again be 00:18:08.92\00:18:15.76 destroyed in a worldwide flood. The sign that it wouldn't happen 00:18:15.86\00:18:20.90 again? The rainbow. The rainbow in the sky is a continual reminder of God's love and 00:18:20.96\00:18:27.30 His commitment to us. But it was even more than just a promise of 00:18:27.40\00:18:34.74 there never again being a worldwide flood. God makes a promise that the rainbow is a 00:18:34.84\00:18:39.75 reminder of the everlasting covenant. What is the 00:18:39.85\00:18:44.65 everlasting covenant, friends? It is the covenant made in the Garden of Eden, by God to 00:18:44.75\00:18:50.03 man - to reconcile us to Him even though we had sinned. In 00:18:50.13\00:19:02.24 Genesis 3:15, God promised, He covenanted, 00:19:02.34\00:19:06.54 God promised, there in the midst of that garden. He made a covenant, that even 00:19:21.42\00:19:24.96 though man had disobeyed and sent into motion an entire 00:19:25.06\00:19:30.13 series of dominoes falling that affected the entire universe - He promised to save man from 00:19:30.23\00:19:36.74 his sin. It is the everlasting covenant that God wants to make 00:19:36.84\00:19:44.08 us His sons and daughters. Every time we see a rainbow it is a 00:19:44.18\00:19:50.62 reminder of God's faithfulness. The rainbow is a symbol that reminds us of the goodness of 00:19:50.72\00:19:55.86 God, but it also draws our attention to the trust and obedience of Noah. The 00:19:55.96\00:20:02.33 rainbow is a reminder that we can only find true refuge with 00:20:02.43\00:20:10.34 the Lord. The rainbow surrounds the very throne of God, even now. Revelation 4:2-3 describe 00:20:10.44\00:20:21.05 the heavenly throne room, 00:20:21.15\00:20:25.65 The rainbow tells us that God wants to save us. The ark was a 00:20:49.08\00:20:55.02 place of protection; it was the vessel of salvation. It was the 00:20:55.12\00:21:00.32 vessel that would protect Noah and his family. God has made another ark. It is an ark 00:21:00.42\00:21:06.73 for today. It is an ark that isn't a physical structure but 00:21:06.83\00:21:12.77 provides even more protection. The ark that god has provided today is the outstretched 00:21:12.87\00:21:18.67 arms of Jesus. He is the only one who can save us from our 00:21:18.77\00:21:27.62 sins. Just like the days of Noah, God is calling to us to get in the ark. A relationship 00:21:27.72\00:21:36.96 with Jesus is our only safety in these last days. Jesus will ride 00:21:37.06\00:21:43.13 with us through storms of life and guide us safely. Do you want to be in the arms of 00:21:43.23\00:21:49.50 safety today? God is faithful. He has great faithfulness to us. 00:21:49.60\00:21:57.35 Everyday He shows us His mercy and grace. Don't you want to 00:21:57.45\00:22:03.59 come to Him today and be in his arms of safety?
