>>Announcer: It has stood the test of time. 00:00:11.31\00:00:14.31 God's book, The Bible 00:00:14.74\00:00:17.55 Still relevant in today's complex world 00:00:18.68\00:00:22.38 It Is Written 00:00:23.79\00:00:25.32 Sharing messages of hope around the world! 00:00:25.69\00:00:29.69 The year was 1940 and the Axis and Allies were embroiled in the 00:00:46.41\00:00:50.45 thick of the second world war. During the later spring months 00:00:50.55\00:00:56.05 at the Battle of France, a large number of French, Belgian and British troops became 00:00:56.15\00:01:01.36 surrounded and their supply line cut off. The troops withdrew to 00:01:01.46\00:01:05.16 the coastal city of Dunkirk. At that time the British began 00:01:05.26\00:01:08.63 planning an evacuation of the troops from Dunkirk in what would become known as Operation 00:01:08.73\00:01:13.60 Dynamo. Winston Churchill began preparing for a large loss of 00:01:13.70\00:01:20.54 life. Though the operation would save some, the thought was that many would loose their 00:01:20.64\00:01:26.05 lives. As the operation began there was chaos as were jumping 00:01:26.15\00:01:32.29 the proper order of evacuation. The uncertainty of success grew even greater. On May 00:01:32.39\00:01:41.56 26, a national day of prayer was declared across the United 00:01:41.66\00:01:47.34 Kingdom and special services were held in religious institutions across the nation. 00:01:47.44\00:01:53.21 Over the course of the next nine days over 330,000 soldiers were 00:01:53.31\00:02:00.62 evacuated successfully. While over 60,000 troops were lost, 00:02:00.72\00:02:07.39 the operation was considered an overwhelming success. Churchill described the operation as 00:02:07.49\00:02:13.03 a miracle and Operation Dynamo is better known by the name of 00:02:13.13\00:02:20.14 Miracle at Dunkirk. Great Britain took the risk to save lives. While some lives 00:02:20.24\00:02:27.04 were lost and a significant amount of equipment left behind, 00:02:27.14\00:02:31.78 the saving of the troops was the most important objective. 00:02:31.88\00:02:39.32 Almost 5000 years ago God faced a choice of epic proportions. 00:02:40.36\00:02:45.99 The earth had become an evil and wicked place. We have studied this passage over the last 00:02:46.09\00:02:51.67 three weeks, but as a refresher notice what the Bible says, in 00:02:51.77\00:02:57.14 Genesis 6:1-13, 00:02:57.24\00:03:03.35 Noah and his family were surrounded by evil everywhere. 00:04:54.86\00:05:00.46 God needed to evacuate them. He needed to preserve a line of people who where faithful 00:05:00.56\00:05:05.47 to Him. God, in his mercy desired to save Noah and his family, but He also 00:05:05.57\00:05:12.57 wanted to save as many people as possible. He sent Noah to preach 00:05:12.67\00:05:17.41 and warn the people but how could He do it? He chose a most unconventional method 00:05:17.51\00:05:24.69 and had Noah build a boat. Notice what the remainder of 00:05:24.79\00:05:33.66 Genesis 6 says, Notice the specificity of God's instructions. The boat had 00:07:12.69\00:07:17.10 specific measurements; it was to be 300 cubits long, fifty cubits 00:07:17.20\00:07:23.30 wide and 30 cubits high. The cubit was a measurement at the time of Noah that was 00:07:23.41\00:07:29.54 approximately from your elbow to the tip of your longest finger. 00:07:29.64\00:07:34.58 This was roughly 53 centimeters. So this ship was to be over 150 meters long, just over 00:07:34.68\00:07:41.32 26 meters wide and almost 16 meters high. This massive boat 00:07:41.42\00:07:50.03 would be the length of one and half football fields and half of the width. In addition 00:07:50.13\00:07:55.54 the boat was to have three levels. Now often the ark is depicted as a straight 00:07:55.64\00:08:02.11 rectangular box or in children's books as a little playful boat 00:08:02.21\00:08:07.42 with animals stuffed in and pointing all out of it. By depicting the ark in such 00:08:07.52\00:08:12.55 a way, we have made a mockery and fairy tale out of a true 00:08:12.65\00:08:16.76 story from the Bible. We don't know how the boat was constructed exactly because no 00:08:16.86\00:08:22.43 further description is given. However, we do know that the technology of Noah's 00:08:22.53\00:08:28.94 day existed to build a boat that would sustain the harsh forces 00:08:29.04\00:08:36.95 it was about to face. This vessel though stood as more than 00:08:37.05\00:08:42.85 just some feat of engineering. This ark stood as a testimony to God's faithfulness to His 00:08:42.95\00:08:50.03 word. Noah was to build an ark and prepare it. 00:08:50.13\00:08:55.23 No other humans, other than Noah and his seven family members, 00:08:58.27\00:09:02.50 took the warning message seriously. Can you imagine the mocking that Noah took? 00:09:02.60\00:09:07.44 Can you imagine the things people were saying, but Noah 00:09:07.54\00:09:14.78 remained faithful? So, while none of humankind would come aboard the boat, the ark 00:09:14.88\00:09:21.19 would be used to save the animal kingdom. At least two of every 00:09:21.29\00:09:26.33 kind would enter the boat. We can't know for sure what is meant by "kind"; but no 00:09:26.43\00:09:32.13 doubt to be included on the ark was the basic structure of the 00:09:32.23\00:09:44.71 animal kingdom. Genesis 7 further instructs Noah that of the two kinds of animals, 00:09:44.81\00:09:48.22 clean and unclean - he was to actually take 7 of the clean and 00:09:48.32\00:09:54.22 2 of the unclean - why such a distinction - later in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 explains 00:09:54.32\00:10:03.53 the differences between clean and unclean animals. Why more 00:10:03.63\00:10:09.50 clean than unclean? Because the clean animals could be eaten or sacrificed, the unclean 00:10:09.60\00:10:16.95 could not be. This also teaches us that such a distinction 00:10:17.05\00:10:22.28 existed long before Moses wrote them down in the law. Through all of this God instructed 00:10:22.38\00:10:30.16 Noah when it was time to get on the boat. Notice Genesis 7:1-10, 00:10:30.26\00:10:42.67 Can you imagine the scene of all the animals entering upon the 00:12:02.15\00:12:07.32 ark? The reality is that God was in control and through miraculous intervention 00:12:07.42\00:12:13.06 helped the entry to be orderly and honoring to God. I want you 00:12:13.16\00:12:20.70 though to take notice of something that is often missed. Noah entered the ark and he 00:12:20.80\00:12:27.01 waited. He waited for seven days for the rain to actually come. 00:12:27.11\00:12:36.12 Picture in your mind what was happening in that ark. Hundreds 00:12:36.22\00:12:43.06 and thousands of animals doing what animals do. The question arises will God do what He says 00:12:43.16\00:12:51.87 He will do? Noah was faithful. He obeyed God. He listened to 00:12:51.97\00:13:00.51 God. What would happen? The first day passes, no rain - the second day passes - no 00:13:00.61\00:13:08.15 rain - the third, then the fourth, the fifth, the sixth, then on the seventh 00:13:08.25\00:13:18.83 day - the tapping noise of water droplets. Then the earth and the 00:13:18.93\00:13:31.41 sky unleash. Verses 11 and 12 of chapter 7 tell us, 00:13:31.51\00:13:34.41 Water coming from above and water coming from beneath, there 00:13:55.63\00:14:00.50 is probably no event that any of us has witnessed that could be comparable. It seems 00:14:00.60\00:14:07.54 that the flood experience was like a tsunami, hurricane and 00:14:07.64\00:14:13.35 tornado all wrapped up in one. 00:14:13.45\00:14:15.82 My friends, it likely doesn't matter what building technique 00:14:17.02\00:14:20.26 that Noah used, what held that boat together was the protective 00:14:20.36\00:14:27.00 hand of God. Noah was a righteous man who walked with God and who trusted God. And God 00:14:27.10\00:14:32.07 was faithful. Let us be very clear that the only survivors of 00:14:32.17\00:14:39.04 this catastrophic event were Noah and his family and the animals on the ark. No 00:14:39.14\00:14:44.81 other human being or land dwelling animal survived. God 00:14:44.91\00:14:53.69 provided ample opportunity for men and women to make a choice. But they loved their sin 00:14:53.79\00:15:02.60 more than they loved God. God has set up ways and commandments. These are 00:15:02.70\00:15:10.17 not to be restrictive, but to provide a way of life that is 00:15:10.27\00:15:16.88 optimal for our well-being. Friends, God is setting up an ark today. The enemies of 00:15:16.98\00:15:22.32 God's people surround us on all sides. Friend the Bible says 00:15:22.42\00:15:29.12 that there is an unseen war going on around us. In Ephesians 00:15:29.22\00:15:46.57 6:12 it says, Our only safety is in the arms of Jesus. He is calling us today into the 00:16:04.99\00:16:10.57 safety of His ark. The safety of His truth, the safety of His 00:16:10.67\00:16:18.01 Word. Today, will you trust Him? He took care of Noah and the ark - He can take care of 00:16:18.11\00:16:24.88 you. He can take care of your problems. Will you trust Him 00:16:24.98\00:16:31.35 today? Friends, God is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish 00:16:31.45\00:16:37.49 but that all should come to repentance. Will you come to Jesus today? He's been 00:16:37.59\00:16:47.10 faithful. He was faithful to Noah; He'll be faithful to you. 00:16:47.20\00:16:54.81 In my moments of fear 00:16:56.81\00:17:01.15 Through every pain, every tear 00:17:02.38\00:17:06.86 There's a God who's been faithful to me 00:17:07.46\00:17:17.33 When my strength was all gone 00:17:17.63\00:17:22.17 When my heart had no song 00:17:22.50\00:17:27.44 Still in love He proved faithful to me 00:17:27.74\00:17:37.75 Every word He's promised is true 00:17:38.29\00:17:47.50 And what I thought was impossible 00:17:47.83\00:17:53.13 I've seen my God do 00:17:53.47\00:18:01.21 He's been faithful, faithful to me 00:18:01.54\00:18:13.39 Looking back, His love and mercy I see 00:18:13.69\00:18:23.67 Though in my heart, I have questioned 00:18:23.97\00:18:29.04 Even failed to believe 00:18:29.27\00:18:32.71 Still he's been faithful, faithful to me 00:18:32.97\00:18:47.26 When my heart looked away 00:18:50.79\00:18:54.60 The many times I could not pray 00:18:55.26\00:18:59.37 Still, my God, He was faithful to me 00:18:59.63\00:19:09.28 The days I spent so selfishly 00:19:09.58\00:19:14.05 Reaching out for what pleased me 00:19:14.32\00:19:19.25 Even then God was faithful to me 00:19:19.52\00:19:28.63 Every time I come back to him 00:19:28.90\00:19:34.04 He is waiting with open arms 00:19:34.37\00:19:40.74 And I see once again 00:19:41.08\00:19:52.19 He's been faithful, faithful to me 00:19:52.55\00:20:04.67 And looking back, His love and mercy I see 00:20:04.97\00:20:14.78 Though in my heart, I have questioned 00:20:15.51\00:20:19.78 Even failed to believe 00:20:20.05\00:20:24.72 Still He's been faithful, faithful, faithful, faithful 00:20:25.02\00:20:34.96 Though in my heart, I have questioned 00:20:35.33\00:20:39.47 Even failed to believe 00:20:39.77\00:20:44.44 Still he's been faithful, yes faithful 00:20:44.74\00:20:49.21 Though in my heart I have questioned 00:20:49.78\00:20:54.35 Even failed to believe 00:20:54.62\00:21:01.06 Still he's been faithful, faithful to me 00:21:01.89\00:21:19.74 Faithful to me 00:21:20.14\00:21:31.39 He's been faithful. The story of Noah is a story of God's 00:21:33.09\00:21:41.36 faithfulness. In fact, the entirety of the scriptures is a story of God's faithfulness to 00:21:41.46\00:21:46.27 man. A story of God, trying to bring man back into his presence 00:21:46.37\00:21:54.84 and into his company. He's been faithful. Will you be faithful? 00:21:54.94\00:22:01.02 Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we have seen your faithfulness. We see your faithfulness in 00:22:01.12\00:22:06.32 the story of Noah. We have seen your faithfulness throughout 00:22:06.42\00:22:11.26 history. Today we make a choice to be faithful to you. Encourage us and help us that we 00:22:11.36\00:22:16.50 would be faithful, no matter what the cost. We pray in Jesus' 00:22:16.60\00:22:23.57 name, amen. Hi, everyone! Parents, what are you packing in your child's lunch-box? 00:22:58.44\00:23:02.38 One of the hot topics in the news lately is childhood 00:23:02.48\00:23:07.05 obesity. There are many reasons why our children are getting bigger weight-wise. For 00:23:07.15\00:23:10.75 one thing, our children are driven everywhere; they're just 00:23:10.85\00:23:14.62 not moving as much as previous generations of children As well, 00:23:14.72\00:23:18.76 with all the technological advances we've embraced as a 00:23:18.86\00:23:22.06 society such as dishwashers and laundry machines, our children don't have to do the same 00:23:22.16\00:23:26.13 kinds of physically demanding chores their grandparents may 00:23:26.23\00:23:30.17 have had to do. Our sedentary lifestyle at home, school, and 00:23:30.27\00:23:35.24 work is simply creating a larger population. Plus, serving sizes 00:23:35.34\00:23:40.58 of food have increased, and our children are consuming more fast 00:23:40.68\00:23:44.19 food - which means more calories, more fat, more weight, more health problems. Most 00:23:44.29\00:23:49.66 children are not eating enough vegetables, fruits, beans, or 00:23:49.76\00:23:54.50 whole grains. So, when you're packing your child's lunch-box, here are some great tips 00:23:54.60\00:23:58.57 from Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine one of my 00:23:58.67\00:24:02.24 favourite healthy lifestyle organizations: First of all, sandwiches are always 00:24:02.34\00:24:06.98 good! Try hummus or another bean spread with sliced tomatoes, 00:24:07.08\00:24:11.55 cucumbers, and shredded carrots in pita bread. I've got here 00:24:11.65\00:24:16.58 half a pita. We'll put in some lovely hummus and then just add the tomato to that, we're 00:24:16.69\00:24:23.79 going to put in some of the cucumber and then some lettuce 00:24:23.89\00:24:29.66 and then some nice curly carrots, look at that it's so pretty. There you have it! 00:24:29.76\00:24:36.64 Veggies in a blanket! It looks and tastes for good. Or stuff in some falafel balls to 00:24:36.74\00:24:46.11 add more protein. Many stores sell vegan deli slices that look 00:24:46.21\00:24:52.02 and taste like bologna, roast beef, and turkey. Serve these on whole-grain bread with soy 00:24:52.12\00:24:58.06 cheese, condiments of your choice, lettuce, and tomato like 00:24:58.16\00:25:03.93 we have here. Peanut butter is an old standby. For variety, try other nut butters, such as 00:25:04.03\00:25:08.37 cashew, almond, or hazelnut, with sliced banana on 00:25:08.47\00:25:13.38 whole-wheat bread like I've got here. Do you know how delicious that is? Or, try an 00:25:13.48\00:25:18.35 avocado and tomato sandwich like we have here. So good for you! 00:25:18.45\00:25:24.19 How about a hot meal? Fill a wide-mouth thermos with leftover 00:25:24.29\00:25:28.56 pasta and tomato sauce, or rice and beans, or how about a nic vegetarian chili? Now soup 00:25:28.66\00:25:33.60 is so comforting! Warm your child with a hearty bean and 00:25:33.70\00:25:39.33 vegetable soup or stew. If you are short on time, try a low-sodium instant soup. Just 00:25:39.43\00:25:44.51 stir hot water into the soup mix and pour into a thermos. Add 00:25:44.61\00:25:49.18 some side dishes! Choose a couple of the following suggestions to complete your 00:25:49.28\00:25:53.05 child's meal: individual boxes of soy or rice milk, soy yogurt 00:25:53.15\00:25:58.79 such as I have here, you can add chopped vegetables and hummus like we've got here, or whole 00:25:58.89\00:26:03.86 grain breads or crackers, homemade muffins, rice cakes, 00:26:03.96\00:26:08.30 pretzels, or fresh fruit. In fact, always include a fresh fruit! For more ideas, visit the 00:26:08.40\00:26:14.50 Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine website at 00:26:14.60\00:26:19.01 pcrm.org.
