>>Announcer: It has stood the test of time.... 00:00:11.60\00:00:14.33 God's book, The Bible 00:00:14.70\00:00:17.66 Still relevant in today's complex world 00:00:18.66\00:00:21.93 It Is Written 00:00:24.70\00:00:25.96 Sharing messages of hope around the world 00:00:26.30\00:00:30.30 >>Chris: A Northern California couple by the name of John and 00:00:38.73\00:00:41.83 Mary were on their daily walk with their dog, they had taken that same route for their 00:00:41.83\00:00:46.53 walk for years. As they walked along their property they 00:00:46.53\00:00:49.93 noticed something sticking out of the ground. It looked like a rusty can, but they 00:00:49.93\00:00:54.16 weren't sure. They hadn't noticed it before, but today 00:00:54.16\00:00:57.70 they saw it and it intrigued them. They began to dig around the object and eventually 00:00:57.70\00:01:03.93 unearthed 8 rusty cans. While that may not seem much of a find, it was the contents of 00:01:03.93\00:01:09.23 those metal cans that was truly amazing. What they found might 00:01:09.23\00:01:14.20 well be the greatest buried treasures ever found in the United States. They found a 00:01:14.20\00:01:19.23 cache of 1400 rare 19th century coins and it is estimated to be worth more than $10 00:01:19.23\00:01:26.46 million US dollars. No one knows exactly how they got there. Some 00:01:26.46\00:01:32.50 had thought it was money from a bank robbery. However, that theory has been proven 00:01:32.50\00:01:35.66 false. It's seems that someone just buried these coins and died 00:01:35.66\00:01:41.16 before they let anyone know where they were. 00:01:41.16\00:01:44.76 Is it possible that we are sitting on a buried treasure? 00:01:45.76\00:01:49.16 Could it be that this "pot of gold" as it was, could teach us a lesson in how we might be 00:01:49.16\00:01:54.70 ready for the return of Jesus? In Matthew 25 there are three 00:01:54.70\00:01:59.20 parables, each of these parables demonstrating the answer to Jesus' call to watch 00:01:59.20\00:02:04.20 and be ready from Matthew 24. Today, we look at the second of 00:02:04.20\00:02:10.10 those parables. In Matthew 25 beginning in verse 14 it says 00:02:10.10\00:02:23.86 these words, The KJV and the NKJV use the phrase, "kingdom of heaven " now notice it is 00:02:34.63\00:02:44.00 in italics. What that simply means, is that in the original 00:02:44.00\00:02:49.63 Greek these words don't actually appear. What the translators 00:02:49.63\00:02:54.30 have done is inserted these words to clarify the meaning. Newer versions of the Bible use 00:02:54.30\00:02:58.13 the word it. This is in fact what the original Greek text 00:02:58.13\00:03:04.80 uses. Why make such a big deal about such a small issue. By using the word it, Jesus is 00:03:04.80\00:03:12.43 drawing us back to the parable just previous to this parable. 00:03:12.43\00:03:18.73 In a previous program we studied verses 1-13 and saw that Jesus 00:03:18.73\00:03:21.86 is talking about the kingdom of God in the parable of the ten virgins. This is important 00:03:21.86\00:03:26.80 to note because Jesus, by using the word "it", points us back to 00:03:26.80\00:03:32.16 this first parable, which discusses our personal readiness 00:03:32.16\00:03:36.13 and accountability. All three parables are connected; in fact 00:03:36.13\00:03:41.96 they are all connected to Jesus' words of Matthew 24. This is not 00:03:41.96\00:03:47.43 just a series of individual counsels strung together. Jesus wants us to be clear in 00:03:47.43\00:03:52.83 understanding the factors related to our being ready for 00:03:52.83\00:04:00.23 His return. As we look at this parable - and remember parables are stories that are often 00:04:01.30\00:04:05.76 metaphorical or symbolic in nature - in this parable the 00:04:05.76\00:04:10.16 master going on a journey is representative of Jesus Christ 00:04:10.16\00:04:14.60 and is a reference to His departure and soon return. Let's continue with the parable, in 00:04:14.60\00:04:20.66 verse 15: 00:04:20.66\00:04:22.33 As we analyze what this parable is saying, we look deeper into 00:04:33.36\00:04:38.20 some of the words, so we might better understand. The word ability is the Greek word 00:04:38.20\00:04:43.56 Dunamis. It means strength or power. In the KJV, it is often 00:04:43.56\00:04:50.70 translated as "mighty works." However, when dunamis is used it is often used in association 00:04:50.70\00:04:56.06 with God's power and His strength, especially the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:04:56.06\00:05:02.46 This gives us the sense that although these servants have 00:05:02.46\00:05:05.70 been given according to their personal ability, that these abilities themselves 00:05:05.70\00:05:09.43 are a God-given attributes 00:05:09.43\00:05:13.43 The master gave them talents, according to their ability. The 00:05:13.96\00:05:17.53 talent in New Testament times was both a weight of measure and a coin. Here in this 00:05:17.53\00:05:24.36 parable, as we will see in just a moment, there is no question 00:05:24.36\00:05:28.86 that it is referring to the coin. And just to help us in our understanding of the 00:05:28.86\00:05:33.86 parable, the value of such coin in today's money would be worth 00:05:33.86\00:05:38.23 approximately $4700.00. However, our concern should be the value 00:05:38.23\00:05:43.46 of a talent in New Testament times. Please follow me we're 00:05:43.46\00:05:47.90 going to do just a little math. In the New Testament what is the daily wage? In Matthew 00:05:47.90\00:05:55.53 20:2 it talks about a day's wage being one penny or denarius. The 00:05:55.53\00:06:10.96 talent, in New Testament times, was worth about 6,000 denarii. 00:06:10.96\00:06:15.23 If we figure 300 working days per year, for weekends and the such, that means that the slave 00:06:15.23\00:06:21.03 who received only one talent received almost 20 years worth 00:06:21.03\00:06:28.66 of wages. To the one who received two almost 40 years worth of wages and to the one 00:06:28.66\00:06:34.80 who received five, almost 100 years worth of wages. Friends, 00:06:34.80\00:06:42.46 this was no small sum of money. Just one talent was of 00:06:42.46\00:06:48.56 significant value. As we journey through this parable, we will see that the talent is symbolic 00:06:49.70\00:06:54.43 of the skills and abilities God has given us to grow His kingdom. After giving 00:06:54.43\00:06:59.03 each of the servants their talents, the master leaves for a 00:06:59.03\00:07:04.63 journey. The point that is very clear as we begin this passage is that: Everyone is given 00:07:04.63\00:07:10.33 some gift or skill in accordance with his ability- which was 00:07:10.33\00:07:15.20 given by God for expanding His kingdom Let's get further into 00:07:15.20\00:07:20.60 the parable Verses 16-18 00:07:20.60\00:07:23.26 Here we draw another point, it seems clear that: There is an 00:07:46.03\00:07:50.73 expectation that we are to utilize the gift or gifts given 00:07:50.73\00:07:55.70 to us by God. In verse 16 it simply says, "then", in more modern versions it says 00:07:55.70\00:08:01.36 "immediately." The Greek literally says that he went 00:08:01.36\00:08:08.10 without delay. The one who received the five talents immediately utilized those gifts 00:08:08.10\00:08:12.83 and the passage says the one with two did likewise. The passage also says, "he 00:08:12.83\00:08:19.70 traded" with them. Quite literally it means he invested 00:08:19.70\00:08:24.20 them, made them work for him. Although the text does not plainly indicate instructions 00:08:24.20\00:08:29.23 from the master, these first two servants knew that these talents 00:08:29.23\00:08:33.73 were to be put to use. They were to be taken to the marketplace 00:08:33.73\00:08:37.93 and profited on. However, the third slave does something very interesting, he goes, digs 00:08:37.93\00:08:44.86 a hole and hides the money in the ground. He does nothing with 00:08:44.86\00:08:51.03 the talents but rather stores them up. The parable continues 00:08:51.03\00:08:56.30 in verse 19 The passage begins by referring to the master returning to settle 00:09:48.00\00:09:52.16 accounts. The King James says he reckoneth. The idea, clearly 00:09:52.16\00:09:59.26 being conveyed is that of settling accounts. The master 00:09:59.26\00:10:05.03 came to see how they used what he had given them. But verse 24 tells us about the servant 00:10:05.03\00:10:11.16 who received one talent, 00:10:11.16\00:10:14.83 The third key point or principle from this text is that a part of 00:11:21.03\00:11:24.46 the judgment of God will be based upon how we utilized our gifts. But the promise 00:11:24.46\00:11:29.86 of hope is that the joy of the Lord awaits those who obey and 00:11:29.86\00:11:35.16 use their gifts. And there is no difference from the one who received 5 or 2. They received 00:11:35.16\00:11:38.63 the same reward. Friends, as we look for hope in this helpless 00:11:38.63\00:11:43.56 and hopeless world - God has places us to be a beacon of hope in this dark place He's given 00:11:43.56\00:11:50.20 us each gifts. Maybe its money - how are we blessing the world 00:11:50.20\00:11:59.46 around us with this gift from God? Maybe He's given the ability to cook or bake, 00:11:59.46\00:12:03.43 what are we doing with that ability given by God to bless 00:12:03.43\00:12:09.60 the world. How about something as simple as time - what are we doing with our time to 00:12:09.60\00:12:16.23 bless those around us? Jesus has a wonderful place of hope 00:12:16.23\00:12:24.93 prepared for us. He wants you to be there, but He desires those 00:12:24.93\00:12:29.56 around you to be there. How are you using the gifts, talents and abilities to prepare those 00:12:29.56\00:12:36.03 around you for the second coming of Jesus? Today friend, do you 00:12:36.03\00:12:40.36 want to offer your life to Jesus. Do you want to offer your life for His glory and to 00:12:40.36\00:12:44.66 expand His kingdom? Do you want to be used as a tool to bring 00:12:44.66\00:12:49.93 hope to this helpless and hopeless planet? Why don't you listen to this song, Lord 00:12:49.93\00:12:55.00 I Offer my Life to You, and as you hear the song, why don't you 00:12:55.00\00:13:01.30 say in your own heart, "Lord, I offer my life to you"? 00:13:01.30\00:13:07.23 All that I am, all that I have 00:13:09.63\00:13:15.63 I lay them down before you, oh Lord 00:13:16.03\00:13:22.26 All my regrets, all my acclaims 00:13:22.60\00:13:28.46 The joy and the pain, I'm making them yours 00:13:28.73\00:13:36.83 Lord, I offer my life to you 00:13:37.10\00:13:41.20 Everything I've been through 00:13:41.56\00:13:45.83 Use it for your glory 00:13:46.26\00:13:49.13 Lord I offer my days to you 00:13:49.46\00:13:53.66 Lifting my praise to you 00:13:54.03\00:13:59.00 As a pleasing sacrifice 00:13:59.30\00:14:04.93 Lord I offer you my life 00:14:05.23\00:14:12.53 Things in the past, things yet unseen 00:14:15.26\00:14:20.83 Wishes and dreams that are yet to come true 00:14:21.20\00:14:27.36 All of my hopes and all of my plans 00:14:27.70\00:14:33.66 My heart and my hands are lifted to you 00:14:34.03\00:14:44.63 Lord, I offer my life to you 00:14:44.96\00:14:49.46 Everything I've been through 00:14:49.80\00:14:53.83 Use it for your glory 00:14:54.23\00:14:57.00 Lord I offer my days to you 00:14:57.36\00:15:01.73 Lifting my praise to you 00:15:02.06\00:15:06.30 As a pleasing sacrifice 00:15:06.63\00:15:12.53 Lord I offer you my life 00:15:12.83\00:15:19.33 Lord I offer you my life 00:15:19.73\00:15:26.90 My life 00:15:33.90\00:15:38.53 >>Chris: Lord, I offer my life to you. Is that the prayer of 00:15:41.60\00:15:46.20 your heart today? Jesus is looking for a people who receive his Word, who are filled 00:15:46.20\00:15:53.70 with his Word, who are filled with the Holy Spirit. But then 00:15:53.70\00:15:58.96 in turn, they bless others and they give. Notice what James chapter 1 and verse 22 00:15:58.96\00:16:07.63 says. James chapter 1 and verse 22. 00:16:07.63\00:16:10.53 Did you hear those words? Jesus is calling us to not just be 00:16:30.73\00:16:36.56 receivers or hearers of the Word, but also to be doers. People who receive the Word. 00:16:36.56\00:16:41.66 don't misunderstand what I'm saying, by the way. Reading the 00:16:41.66\00:16:46.30 scripture, hearing the scripture, is of utmost importance to the Christian, 00:16:46.30\00:16:52.26 because as we read the scripture, it shows us the way of salvation. It is our 00:16:52.26\00:16:55.46 roadmap. But as we read the scriptures, it should lead us to 00:16:55.46\00:17:01.86 do something, to take action. You know, there's that old saying, "Actions speak louder 00:17:01.86\00:17:06.53 than words." That's what Jesus is looking for. People of action. People who have 00:17:06.53\00:17:12.86 received from Jesus through his Word, but then they act upon 00:17:12.86\00:17:18.50 their faith. There was a book recently written entitled Unchristian. And the book 00:17:18.50\00:17:25.36 studied people who are not Christians and their attitudes 00:17:25.36\00:17:29.96 toward Christians and toward Christianity. What did they find? They found that 00:17:29.96\00:17:35.76 many people saw great hypocrisy. People who proclaimed one thing 00:17:35.76\00:17:42.60 but did another. How do we change that? There was a man who 00:17:42.60\00:17:49.86 once wrote that the strongest argument against Christianity is Christians. Their lack of 00:17:49.86\00:17:55.60 joy, their lack of hope, their lack of action. But that same 00:17:55.60\00:18:01.76 man wrote that the strongest argument for Christianity is Christians. Christians who 00:18:01.76\00:18:09.46 act upon their faith. The counsel of the Word is that we 00:18:09.46\00:18:14.90 need to be both hearers and doers. Have you offered your life to Jesus and said, "Jesus, 00:18:14.90\00:18:24.66 I want to be a doer, not just a hearer of your Word"? How do 00:18:24.66\00:18:31.83 your neighbours think of you? How do your coworkers think of 00:18:31.83\00:18:36.13 you? How does the young lady at the grocery store or the young man at the grocery store who is 00:18:36.13\00:18:40.96 serving you, what do they think of you? How do they feel about 00:18:40.96\00:18:48.53 you? Is it possible, friend, that our actions do speak louder than our words and that 00:18:48.53\00:18:54.33 our actions are saying that we really don't have Jesus fully in 00:18:54.33\00:19:01.23 our life? Jesus is calling today. And he's saying, "I've given you talents. I've 00:19:01.23\00:19:08.23 given you gifts. I've given you abilities. And I've given each 00:19:08.23\00:19:11.40 of those so that you might bless the world around you." Today, friend, do you want 00:19:11.40\00:19:18.66 to offer your life to Jesus? Let's pray Heavenly father, we 00:19:18.66\00:19:25.13 come, we offer our life to you. Help us to be doers and not just 00:19:25.13\00:19:32.23 hearers of your word. This is our prayer in Jesus' name. 00:19:32.23\00:19:36.33 Hi, everyone. I think we all know that it's important for us 00:20:11.16\00:20:14.90 to stay active, and yet, research shows that perhaps only 00:20:14.90\00:20:18.93 around 20% of the population makes a conscious effort to keep physically fit. Well, 00:20:18.93\00:20:23.36 today, I've got a surprise for you in the form of physiotherapist Andrew 00:20:23.36\00:20:28.06 Conroy who is here with me, and he's going to share some 00:20:28.06\00:20:32.13 insights about the importance of keeping physically active. Andrew, welcome. ANDREW: Thanks 00:20:32.13\00:20:37.60 for having me, Bev. BEV: Absolutely. Andrew, there are a 00:20:37.60\00:20:40.33 lot of reasons why people don't stay physically fit. What's so important about exercise? 00:20:40.33\00:20:45.13 ANDREW: Well, our bodies are made to move, Bev. And when we 00:20:45.13\00:20:49.13 do move regularly, our heart improves, it becomes a more powerful pump; we retain the 00:20:49.13\00:20:53.43 minerals in our skeletal structure so that we don't have 00:20:53.43\00:20:57.30 weakening of the bones; we'll see our blood pressure profile drop and improve; we'll see 00:20:57.30\00:21:01.73 cholesterol levels improve as well. Mood can improve and our 00:21:01.73\00:21:06.10 stress levels can be dropped. And some of the troublesome enzymes that run through our 00:21:06.10\00:21:10.06 system can be improved upon as we walk regularly. So overall, 00:21:10.06\00:21:14.80 we're going to feel more energized and just see some of that stress drop out of our 00:21:14.80\00:21:18.30 lives. BEV: Fantastic. You mentioned walking. Walking is an 00:21:18.30\00:21:23.40 excellent way for people to keep physically fit. What are some of the benefits of just walking? 00:21:23.40\00:21:27.43 ANDREW: Some of the benefits. Well, first of all, it's a 00:21:27.43\00:21:31.16 benefit to all. It's available to all. It's cheap start-up. You can slot it into any 00:21:31.16\00:21:35.20 part of your day without using up too much time in these pressure-packed days 00:21:35.20\00:21:40.26 that we live in. So walking is just the perfect undertaking for 00:21:40.26\00:21:43.73 anyone that has perhaps not exercised regularly for a while, 00:21:43.73\00:21:50.93 and led a sedentary life. BEV: That's true. So starting small 00:21:50.93\00:21:54.63 with the walking. ANDREW: Right, right. BEV: Talking about what 00:21:54.63\00:21:57.90 we wear when we're walking. Outerwear, shoes. ANDREW: Okay. well, I'll start with clothing. 00:21:57.90\00:22:03.90 You know, a common choice is cotton t-shirts, and there is a 00:22:03.90\00:22:08.66 problem with that: when cotton becomes damp, it becomes cold and loses its insulating 00:22:08.66\00:22:13.93 properties. So a lot of products on the market these days include 00:22:13.93\00:22:18.96 COOLMAX-type synthetic clothing which wicks sweat away, and we've all heard of that. 00:22:18.96\00:22:22.86 So they make great undergarments. Up against that in a middle layer, we 00:22:22.86\00:22:26.96 could choose a fleece, which would keep us nicely insulated 00:22:26.96\00:22:29.80 as the temperatures drop. And finally, a shell for when the days are windier. And 00:22:29.80\00:22:33.86 of course, gloves or head protection if the temperatures 00:22:33.86\00:22:38.13 really come down. BEV: Right. I've heard there's a saying, "There's no inclement 00:22:38.13\00:22:40.66 weather; there's only bad clothing." ANDREW: Well, correct. BEV: Let's talk 00:22:40.66\00:22:44.26 about running shoes or walking shoes. ANDREW Right. BEV: You've 00:22:44.26\00:22:47.96 got one to show us? ANDREW: I did bring one along. And you make an interesting 00:22:47.96\00:22:50.93 point, Bev. A running shoe does not work so well as a walking 00:22:50.93\00:22:54.40 shoe. BEV: Right, and I've got a running shoe on. ANDREW: That's correct. The high heel 00:22:54.40\00:22:57.10 counter of a running shoe tends to cause the foot to slap down 00:22:57.10\00:23:01.96 and cause fatigue in the front of the shin muscles here. What you're looking for in 00:23:01.96\00:23:07.26 a walking shoe is a flexible midsole, just where your foot 00:23:07.26\00:23:13.83 happens to bend naturally as well. You're looking for a little twist and an 00:23:13.83\00:23:16.60 ability to twist, which is also part of the natural walking 00:23:16.60\00:23:21.43 pattern. You're looking for a nice wide toe box with a little bit of height so that your 00:23:21.43\00:23:25.06 feet can move within that just comfortably. You know, one tip 00:23:25.06\00:23:29.50 is when you're going to get some walking shoes, go beyond about 00:23:29.50\00:23:34.30 midday and afterwards when you've been up on your feet. Your feet will spread and swell 00:23:34.30\00:23:37.06 a little bit so you will find that you will get a better fit 00:23:37.06\00:23:40.66 if you're buying a shoe later in the day. And do make sure that you take the sort of socks 00:23:40.66\00:23:45.46 that you're going to wear in that shoe. Thicker socks should 00:23:45.46\00:23:50.50 be worn at the time of purchase so that you just make sure you get that comfortable 00:23:50.50\00:23:53.06 and perfect fit that you're going to need. BEV: Right. And 00:23:53.06\00:23:56.16 if you wear orthotics, should your orthotics go in there? 00:23:56.16\00:23:59.26 ANDREW: Orthotics can go in there as well. It is good, then, to buy a shoe that has a 00:23:59.26\00:24:03.83 removable insert at first. If you try and put your orthotics on top of a pre-existing 00:24:03.83\00:24:08.46 insert, you'll often find they won't fit and your foot will 00:24:08.46\00:24:14.56 bind. So make sure that the initial, original insert does come out first. BEV: Okay, 00:24:14.56\00:24:18.53 fantastic. Really quickly, stretching. Yes or no? It's a 00:24:18.53\00:24:22.20 good thing to do? ANDREW: Stretching is a great thing to do. I am particularly in favour 00:24:22.20\00:24:26.60 of stretching after. The muscles have been warmed up, they've 00:24:26.60\00:24:29.36 been exercised, and that's when they will tighten up, after an 00:24:29.36\00:24:33.36 exercise. So I would recommend a nice warm-up, just gradually picking up your speed 00:24:33.36\00:24:38.30 during the walk, but the stretching comes after. And that 00:24:38.30\00:24:41.66 will avoid any post-exercise stiffness or soreness. BEV: All right. So show us some good 00:24:41.66\00:24:46.76 walking form. What do we need to be aware of when we're walking? 00:24:46.76\00:24:50.20 ANDREW: You'd think it would be straightforward, but there's 00:24:50.20\00:24:52.43 some common errors. The first thing I would be looking for, if you can just face this 00:24:52.43\00:24:57.70 way. I would be looking for head position. It is the most 00:24:57.70\00:25:00.16 critical thing. Whatever your head does, the rest of your body will follow. So we're looking 00:25:00.16\00:25:03.83 for a nice upright head position. Always think of keeping the chin parallel 00:25:03.83\00:25:08.66 to the floor. When you are watching where you're going, 00:25:08.66\00:25:12.13 your eyes can swivel and look several feet ahead. You want to keep the chest bone up 00:25:12.13\00:25:15.70 here, slightly elevated, so you're standing up nice and tall. Arm position is 00:25:15.70\00:25:21.06 going to swing forwards and backwards, up to about chest 00:25:21.06\00:25:25.06 height. A common error, Bev, is to come up too high with the swing. It will actually slow 00:25:25.06\00:25:29.00 your style down and throw off a smooth walking pattern. And the 00:25:29.00\00:25:36.43 final thing I would say, and a common mistake, is overstepping. It will actually slow you 00:25:36.43\00:25:41.46 down and now you have to pole-vault over a leg that's 00:25:41.46\00:25:46.30 been stretched out far away. So don't stretch too far ahead, goose-stepping, as we call 00:25:46.30\00:25:51.03 it. BEV: So just a small step, kind of thing. ANDREW: Smaller, 00:25:51.03\00:25:55.06 more rapid steps are far better. BEV: All right, fantastic. Just 00:25:55.06\00:25:58.96 briefly, eating pre- and post-? ANDREW: You know, walking is an endurance exercise. 00:25:58.96\00:26:04.13 You're going to need some fuel. Ideally, 30 to 60, perhaps 90 00:26:04.13\00:26:09.16 minutes before, take on some carbohydrates, perhaps some 00:26:09.16\00:26:13.93 juice, a banana is ideal, perhaps a low-fat bagel or a low-fat yogurt, just to have 00:26:13.93\00:26:18.46 some fuel reserve so that you don't run out of energy midway through the exercise and 00:26:18.46\00:26:22.33 have to shorten your exercise. The other thing is, if you 00:26:22.33\00:26:25.40 overeat too soon, you're going to feel uncomfortable. Your diaphragm can't drop and 00:26:25.40\00:26:28.93 you can't breathe easily. BEV: Wow, okay, fantastic. Andrew, 00:26:28.93\00:26:32.50 thank you for those helpful tips. And I hope you will be encouraged to work some 00:26:32.50\00:26:36.36 physical activity into your everyday living. Andrew says 00:26:36.36\00:26:39.76 it's important.
