>>Announcer: It has stood the test of time. 00:00:11.80\00:00:14.70 God's book, The Bible 00:00:15.83\00:00:18.20 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:00:19.06\00:00:22.30 It Is Written 00:00:23.26\00:00:26.13 Sharing messages of hope around the world. 00:00:26.83\00:00:31.23 Welcome to the It Is Written Canada television program, I'm 00:00:39.50\00:00:43.26 Bill Santos, thank you for watching. 00:00:43.26\00:00:45.83 In 1960, in what was considered a sidebar to the presidential 00:00:45.83\00:00:51.66 campaign, Massachusetts Senator John F. 00:00:51.66\00:00:54.16 Kennedy and Vice President Richard Nixon met for a series 00:00:54.16\00:00:59.60 of four televised debates. 00:00:59.60\00:01:01.60 When the last of the debates ended, one thing was for 00:01:01.60\00:01:05.90 certain, the United States' method of choosing a national leader had changed forever. 00:01:05.90\00:01:11.66 For many who watched the debates on television, particularly the 00:01:11.66\00:01:16.53 first debate in Chicago, the lingering image is that of a 00:01:16.53\00:01:22.33 sickly-looking, perspiring Nixon juxtaposed with the handsome 00:01:22.33\00:01:28.43 Kennedy. Having just recovered from a brief illness and forever 00:01:28.43\00:01:33.30 battling his 5 o'clock shadow, Richard Nixon appeared gaunt and 00:01:33.30\00:01:38.66 slightly haggard. In contrast the younger Kennedy proved more 00:01:38.66\00:01:43.66 telegenic than his counterpart, immediately giving him the edge with the some 70 million 00:01:43.66\00:01:49.20 viewers. 00:01:49.20\00:01:51.40 Larry Bird, curator for political history at the Smithsonian said that 00:01:51.40\00:01:55.90 Nixon turned down makeup because Kennedy declined to use makeup". 00:01:55.90\00:02:03.66 To most debate watchers Senator Kennedy simply looked more 00:02:03.66\00:02:12.70 presidential. On election night Kennedy received 49.7% of the popular vote to Nixon's 00:02:12.70\00:02:18.40 49.5%, with the Democratic ticket polling only about 100,000 more votes than 00:02:18.40\00:02:24.66 the Republicans out of over 68 million votes cast. 00:02:24.66\00:02:29.86 Despite Nixon winning more states than Kennedy, the Electoral College vote 00:02:29.86\00:02:35.10 went to the Democrats by a 303-219 margin. 00:02:35.10\00:02:41.50 As president, Kennedy would make effective use of television, and 00:02:41.50\00:02:47.46 was the first president to hold live televised press 00:02:47.46\00:02:54.06 conferences. When he resurrected his own political career leading 00:02:54.06\00:02:58.33 to his election to the White House in 1968, Nixon would often travel to Florida or California 00:02:58.33\00:03:05.03 to insure that he was tanned for his TV appearances. 00:03:05.03\00:03:11.56 When it comes to height, every inch counts--in fact, in the 00:03:11.56\00:03:16.70 workplace, each inch above average may be worth $789 more per year, according to a study 00:03:16.70\00:03:26.06 in the Journal of Applied Psychology. 00:03:26.06\00:03:29.40 The findings suggest that someone who is 6 feet tall earns, on average, nearly 00:03:29.40\00:03:35.00 $166,000 more during a 30-year career than someone who is 5 00:03:35.00\00:03:44.26 feet 5 inches--even when controlling for gender, age and 00:03:44.26\00:03:50.03 weight. The height-salary link was found by psychologist 00:03:51.10\00:03:55.03 Timothy A. Judge, PhD, of the University of Florida, and researcher Daniel M. 00:03:55.03\00:03:58.06 Cable, PhD, of the University of North Carolina. 00:03:58.06\00:04:01.86 They analyzed data from four American and British longitudinal studies that 00:04:01.86\00:04:07.03 followed about 8,500 participants from adolescence to 00:04:07.03\00:04:13.40 adulthood and recorded personal characteristics, salaries and 00:04:13.40\00:04:19.70 occupations. Judge offers a possible explanation for the 00:04:19.70\00:04:25.00 height bias: As such, the biggest correlation between height and salary appeared in 00:04:51.80\00:04:57.93 sales and management positions--careers in which customer perception 00:04:57.93\00:05:03.53 has a major impact on success. 00:05:03.53\00:05:06.90 If customers believe a tall salesperson is more commanding, 00:05:06.90\00:05:12.76 for example, they may be more likely to follow the salesperson's wishes, according 00:05:12.76\00:05:17.10 to Judge. 00:05:17.10\00:05:19.53 Interestingly, they followed this study up with another that 00:05:19.53\00:05:26.80 looks at weight and income, very interesting, you can google it. 00:05:26.80\00:05:33.03 For centuries society has used little more than the exterior to 00:05:33.03\00:05:38.43 determine who would be the best ruler, mate or employee and the results have many times 00:05:38.43\00:05:46.40 been disastrous. 00:05:46.40\00:05:50.86 As the period of the judges comes to an end, the prophet 00:05:50.86\00:05:56.50 Samuel, the last judge had grown old. 00:05:56.50\00:05:59.73 Typically the leadership would have passed down to his sons - 00:05:59.73\00:06:04.00 not this time for the Bible tells us that Samuel's boys did not walk in the ways of their 00:06:04.00\00:06:09.43 father and that they had perverted justice. 00:06:09.43\00:06:12.70 The people wanted a leader none-the-less - God's system of 00:06:12.70\00:06:19.36 Judges was not doing it for them, they wanted a King! 00:06:19.36\00:06:22.86 The other nations had kings - why shouldn't Israel have a 00:06:22.86\00:06:26.50 king? So Samuel was approached and the demand was made: 1 00:06:26.50\00:06:40.30 Samuel 8:4 - 5 Samuel was not happy - all of his work ministering to the people seemed 00:06:58.73\00:07:05.43 to have been in vain - they wanted someone to do for them what God was prepared to. 00:07:05.43\00:07:13.93 1 Samuel 8: 7 - 9 00:07:13.93\00:07:15.90 The people would have their wish - but placing their trust in an 00:07:53.16\00:07:57.73 earthly King while turning their backs on the Heavenly King would 00:07:57.73\00:08:06.13 come with a cost - Samuel warns the people . 1 Samuel 8: 10 - 20 00:08:06.13\00:08:11.13 The people's choice was quite a specimen . 1 Samuel 9: 1 - 2 00:09:43.10\00:09:51.80 Saul looked good in the eyes of the Israelites - he had all of 00:10:16.53\00:10:21.86 the physical attributes you would want in a king and his reign got off to a good start - 00:10:21.86\00:10:28.16 but his heart was the problem. 00:10:28.16\00:10:30.40 Character flaws began to appear - paranoia, selfishness, 00:10:30.40\00:10:35.80 self-centeredness and violence. 00:10:35.80\00:10:38.36 It got so bad that God was forced to look for someone to replace Saul - but this 00:10:38.36\00:10:45.20 time the selection criteria would be different - God would 00:10:45.20\00:10:50.16 look at the heart. 00:10:50.16\00:10:53.00 Samuel breaks the news to King Saul. 00:10:53.00\00:10:57.40 1 Samuel 13: 13 - 14 00:10:57.40\00:11:02.06 "a man after His own heart" God's method of selecting a 00:11:35.16\00:11:39.96 leader would be in stark contrast to man's methods - this time God looked for someone 00:11:39.96\00:11:45.33 whose heart was completed committed to Him. 00:11:45.33\00:11:49.43 God instructs Samuel to go to Bethlehem to anoint the new king. 1 Samuel 16: 1 00:11:49.43\00:12:02.30 Samuel did what the Lord asked and came to Bethlehem - there he 00:12:24.63\00:12:28.83 invited Jesse and his sons to sacrifice with him - as they spend time together 00:12:28.83\00:12:38.76 Samuel is conducting his prophetic inspection of Jesse's 00:12:38.76\00:12:45.26 sons. The first to catch the eye of the prophet was Eliab - the oldest of the sons. 00:12:45.26\00:12:51.60 He was the one most like King Saul in stature and appearance 00:12:51.60\00:13:01.03 but God says to Samuel . verses 6 - 7 00:13:01.03\00:13:03.03 You see God was looking for a man with character - a man whose 00:13:23.73\00:13:30.86 heart was towards God. 00:13:30.86\00:13:32.53 God was not interested in the size of the man but in the 00:13:32.53\00:13:37.16 condition of his heart. 00:13:37.16\00:13:38.66 As each of Jesse's sons is paraded before Samuel it becomes 00:13:38.66\00:13:44.33 clear to the prophet that God's chosen one was not among these sons - puzzled Samuel 00:13:44.33\00:13:52.43 turns to Jesse and asks in verse 11 . 00:13:52.43\00:13:55.86 David had simply been overlooked - he was left to tend the sheep, 00:14:19.33\00:14:26.00 besides it would be much to dangerous to leave the sheep 00:14:26.00\00:14:30.23 unattended. His father had not seen kingly potential in his 00:14:30.23\00:14:39.06 youngest son. Samuel insists that David be called in from the 00:14:39.06\00:14:43.26 field. David makes his way from the field to the house . I 00:14:43.26\00:14:50.36 Samuel 16: 12 - 13 The moment David walked in Samuel knew this was the one - he was a handsome 00:15:17.76\00:15:25.06 young man with red hair and beautiful eyes, but more 00:15:25.06\00:15:29.93 important than his external beauty was a heart that longed 00:15:29.93\00:15:38.73 to know God. I don't want to be misunderstood here, it is not that Saul was all bad 00:15:40.33\00:15:45.50 and David was all good. 00:15:45.50\00:15:47.76 They both were human beings with weaknesses and both had the same 00:15:47.76\00:15:51.86 potential. 00:15:51.86\00:15:53.30 But, as we will see as we go forward in this study, Saul more 00:15:53.30\00:16:00.63 and more followed his egocentric desires - while David, at least 00:16:00.63\00:16:06.56 in his early life, sincerely followed God's ways. 00:16:06.56\00:16:10.03 In his later years, even when he failed God miserably - he always 00:16:10.03\00:16:15.96 turned back to God. 00:16:15.96\00:16:18.16 We have some great lessons to learn from God. 00:16:18.16\00:16:21.80 Rather than accepting or rejecting people based on their 00:16:21.80\00:16:27.53 status or lack of it, how much money or little money they have, how clever or innocent 00:16:27.53\00:16:31.76 they are, they beauty or lack of it, we should look at their 00:16:31.76\00:16:38.30 heart, their character. 00:16:38.30\00:16:40.46 Not only the values they claim to uphold but those they 00:16:40.46\00:16:47.20 actually live by. If we would take time in making decisions on 00:16:47.20\00:16:52.73 a spouse, business associates and political leaders, and follow the example of Samuel - 00:16:52.73\00:17:00.36 looking to God for His choice for our lives we would be much 00:17:00.36\00:17:05.83 better served. 00:17:05.83\00:17:07.96 God's choice may not be the obvious one, in fact, at first 00:17:07.96\00:17:12.13 glance God's choice may not make much sense at all, but God can and will use anyone who 00:17:12.13\00:17:19.73 submits their heart and their life to Him. 00:17:19.73\00:17:24.56 The high honor that had been given to David did nothing to 00:17:26.56\00:17:31.56 boost his ego - he quietly went back to his job of tending sheep and waited for God to call 00:17:31.56\00:17:38.66 him from the field to the throne. 00:17:38.66\00:17:42.63 As humble and modest as before his anointing, David went back 00:17:42.63\00:17:49.16 and watched and cared for his sheep as tenderly as before. 00:17:49.16\00:17:55.86 As David spend his days out in the solitude of the fields 00:17:55.86\00:18:01.76 contemplating God and His marvelous works, David's heart and mind were developing and 00:18:01.76\00:18:07.63 strengthening for the role he was being called perform. 00:18:07.63\00:18:11.73 Each day David was coming into more intimate communion with 00:18:11.73\00:18:16.33 God, his mind was constantly penetrating into fresh themes to 00:18:16.33\00:18:22.36 inspire his songwriting. 00:18:22.36\00:18:24.10 His closeness with nature, his communion with God, in the care 00:18:24.10\00:18:28.70 of his sheep, the perils and deliverances, the sadness and joys, these all served not only 00:18:28.70\00:18:34.83 to mold the character of David and to influence his future 00:18:34.83\00:18:39.66 life, but through the psalms he authored, they would inspire love and faith in the hearts of 00:18:39.66\00:18:46.06 God's people through out the ages, bringing all of us nearer 00:18:46.06\00:18:50.16 to the ever-loving heart of God. 00:18:50.16\00:18:53.60 David in the beauty and vigor of his youth was preparing to take 00:18:53.60\00:18:58.20 on one the highest positions on earth. 00:18:58.20\00:19:00.10 The idea that the kingship of Israel would go to an underage 00:19:00.10\00:19:08.20 shepherd boy made no sense whatsoever in the world's mind. 00:19:08.20\00:19:12.26 But in God's mind it made perfect sense. 00:19:12.26\00:19:14.53 God not being impressed by physique or intellect, but by a 00:19:14.53\00:19:22.90 heart completed committed to Him, saw in David the perfect 00:19:22.90\00:19:28.60 choice. While David also possessed many external attributes, he was a man with 00:19:28.60\00:19:35.43 unique internal qualities. 00:19:35.43\00:19:40.36 W. 00:19:41.40\00:19:42.86 Michael Blumenthal, chairman of Unisys, was quoted in Forbes 00:19:42.86\00:19:46.20 magazine about the mistakes he made in hiring: In choosing people for top positions, 00:19:46.20\00:19:52.96 you have to try to make sure they have a clear sense of what 00:19:52.96\00:19:56.66 is right and wrong, a willingness to be truthful, the courage to say what they think 00:19:56.66\00:20:01.20 and to do what they think is right. 00:20:01.20\00:20:03.53 This is the quality that should really be at the top. 00:20:03.53\00:20:07.26 I was too often impressed by the intelligence and substantive 00:20:07.26\00:20:12.80 knowledge of an individual and did not always pay enough attention to the question 00:20:12.80\00:20:17.03 of how honest, courageous and good a person the individual 00:20:17.03\00:20:24.73 really was. When God looks at you does He see a heart committed to Him and His 00:20:24.73\00:20:32.53 ways. 00:20:32.53\00:20:34.00 Do you live your life in response to the desires of your 00:20:34.00\00:20:39.86 heart or is your heart completely committed to God? 00:20:39.86\00:20:44.03 2 Chronicles 16: 9 00:20:44.03\00:20:48.50 When God looks at you does he see a person totally devoted to 00:20:59.36\00:21:06.63 Him, a person committed to walking away from anything that is displeasing to God? 00:21:06.63\00:21:13.93 When God looks at you does he find a heart that is completely 00:21:13.93\00:21:20.40 His? Charles Spurgeon wrote: 00:21:20.40\00:21:23.10 Giving us time to develop and grow is all part of God's plan, 00:22:27.36\00:22:35.36 remember no matter how far you think you still have to grow, no matter how unprepared you 00:22:35.36\00:22:40.76 may feel, you have been chosen by God and He has a plan for 00:22:40.76\00:22:50.83 your life. Well, the Lord uses all kinds of unqualified people, 00:22:50.83\00:22:56.76 doesn't He? He can use you and me. 00:22:56.76\00:23:00.46 There was a concert violinist who wanted to demonstrate, a 00:23:03.90\00:23:08.53 very important point. 00:23:08.53\00:23:10.20 He rented a great hall in a city and announced that he would play 00:23:10.20\00:23:13.86 a concert on a twenty thousand dollar violin. 00:23:13.86\00:23:17.93 He had the place packed with violin lovers and he played (05:00) exquisitely 00:23:17.93\00:23:22.83 and they applauded just gloriously. 00:23:22.83\00:23:25.76 He bowed and took their applause, and then threw the violin to the ground 00:23:25.76\00:23:29.66 and stomped it into bits. 00:23:29.66\00:23:32.30 The audience was horrified. 00:23:32.30\00:23:33.36 And then he walked off the stage. 00:23:33.36\00:23:37.86 The stage manager came out and said uhm, Ladies and Gentlemen, 00:23:37.86\00:23:44.53 to put you at ease that was a twenty dollar violin, he will now return to play the twenty 00:23:44.53\00:23:55.20 thousand violin. 00:23:55.20\00:24:00.80 And you know what? 00:24:00.80\00:24:02.46 They couldn't tell the difference, and he made his 00:24:02.46\00:24:09.20 point. It isn't the instrument, it's the artist, right? 00:24:09.20\00:24:14.70 David was the only person in Scripture who is called "A man 00:24:17.93\00:24:21.96 after God's own heart. 00:24:21.96\00:24:23.66 " His name is mentioned more than one thousand times in the 00:24:23.66\00:24:30.96 Bible, Jesus is even referred in the Gospels as the "Son of 00:24:30.96\00:24:35.66 David".
