>>Bill: Morris Siegel was a street person in Los Angeles. 00:00:02.10\00:00:05.13 He lived like most street people roaming about in back alleys, 00:00:05.13\00:00:10.23 sleeping out-of-doors, carrying everything he owned in an old 00:00:10.23\00:00:14.80 shopping cart. He was found in an alley, dead of natural causes, perhaps heart trouble. 00:00:14.80\00:00:19.30 The interesting thing about Morris is that he had $207,421 00:00:19.30\00:00:25.63 in the bank at the time of his death. 00:00:25.63\00:00:30.50 It seems that Morris' father died and left him the money ten 00:00:30.50\00:00:33.63 years earlier. 00:00:33.63\00:00:35.83 When Morris did not claim it, the Division of Unclaimed 00:00:35.83\00:00:39.40 Property tracked him down, and his family forced him to accept 00:00:39.40\00:00:43.70 it. He took only enough of the money to buy an old car, where 00:00:43.70\00:00:47.26 he slept in bad weather. 00:00:47.26\00:00:49.66 Relatives rented an apartment for him, but he never went 00:00:49.66\00:00:53.66 there. He died December 14, 1989, with three dollars in his pocket and an untouched 00:00:53.66\00:01:00.96 fortune in the bank. 00:01:00.96\00:01:04.33 ANNOUNCER: It has stood the test of time. 00:01:16.20\00:01:18.90 God's book: the Bible, 00:01:19.73\00:01:22.23 still relevant in today's complex world. 00:01:23.30\00:01:26.73 It Is Written, 00:01:27.30\00:01:29.40 sharing the messages of hope around the world. 00:01:30.60\00:01:34.93 >>Bill: As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and 00:01:58.16\00:02:01.63 fell on his knees before him. 00:02:01.63\00:02:04.56 "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal 00:02:04.56\00:02:11.33 life?" Mark 10: 17 - 23 00:02:11.33\00:02:15.10 That's a tough teaching, especially for a generation that 00:03:38.53\00:03:43.60 has to rent out mini-warehouses in order to store all their 00:03:43.60\00:03:47.43 stuff. But there it is. 00:03:47.43\00:03:49.60 Money is a big deal in our lives. 00:03:55.96\00:03:58.60 Let's confess it. 00:03:58.60\00:03:59.83 We like nice things. 00:03:59.83\00:04:02.16 We like things that are new, things that work. 00:04:02.16\00:04:05.10 How many have been lusting after a new flat-screen plasma 00:04:05.10\00:04:08.30 television? 00:04:08.30\00:04:11.23 How many wouldn't like to replace slightly-worn living room furniture with 00:04:11.23\00:04:15.56 something much more attractive? 00:04:15.56\00:04:18.00 We like nice things, and in order to have nice things we've 00:04:18.00\00:04:18.53 got to have money. 00:04:18.53\00:04:23.20 But Jesus is warning us that money can ensnare us and separate us from God. 00:04:23.20\00:04:30.46 Preacher Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick once said something 00:04:30.46\00:04:35.96 quite profound. And we know it's true. 00:04:53.30\00:04:55.36 But it's our culture. 00:04:55.36\00:04:57.73 And it is very difficult to cut ourselves loose from our 00:04:57.73\00:04:59.53 cultural obsession with things. 00:04:59.53\00:05:02.63 There is a story about an old monk who has been mentoring a 00:05:02.63\00:05:08.86 young disciple. 00:05:08.86\00:05:11.33 Believing that he has the ability to be on his own, the monk allows the boy to 00:05:11.33\00:05:16.20 live in a lean-to near the river bank. 00:05:16.20\00:05:20.53 Each night, happy as a lark, the young disciple puts out his 00:05:20.53\00:05:25.00 loincloth, his only possession, to dry. 00:05:25.00\00:05:30.43 One morning he is dismayed to find that it has been torn to 00:05:30.43\00:05:35.53 shreds by rats. So he begs for a second loincloth from the 00:05:35.53\00:05:40.36 villagers. When the rats come to destroy that one, he gets a cat 00:05:40.36\00:05:43.76 to keep the rats away. 00:05:43.76\00:05:46.56 But now he has to beg not only for food but also for milk for 00:05:46.56\00:05:52.20 the cat. To get around that, he buys a cow. 00:05:52.20\00:05:56.03 But then he has to seek food for the cow. 00:05:56.03\00:06:00.20 He concludes, finally, that it would be easier to work the land 00:06:00.20\00:06:04.96 around his hut, so he leaves off his prayers and meditations, and 00:06:04.96\00:06:08.86 commits himself to growing crops to feed the cow. 00:06:08.86\00:06:12.13 The operation expands. 00:06:12.13\00:06:14.16 He hires workers. 00:06:14.16\00:06:16.10 He marries a wife who keeps the household running smoothly. 00:06:16.10\00:06:19.46 Pretty soon he is one of the wealthiest people in the 00:06:19.46\00:06:23.23 village. Several years later the monk comes back to find a mansion where the lean-to 00:06:23.23\00:06:28.50 had been. 00:06:28.50\00:06:30.60 "What is the meaning of this?" 00:06:30.60\00:06:32.16 the monk asks. 00:06:32.16\00:06:34.53 The disciple replies, "Holy Father, there was no other way 00:06:34.53\00:06:39.30 for me to keep my loincloth." 00:06:39.30\00:06:42.43 In the Hebrew tradition, wealthy people were the ones who could 00:06:42.43\00:06:47.83 spend time reading the scriptures and praying. 00:06:47.83\00:06:50.96 In Fiddler on the Roof, Tevye sings, 00:06:50.96\00:06:53.56 But that's not what is happening with us. 00:07:14.53\00:07:18.30 The more stuff we have, the less time we have for God. 00:07:18.30\00:07:23.46 How can we disentangle ourselves from the social pressures as 00:07:23.46\00:07:29.43 well as the inner greed that causes us to fill our lives with 00:07:29.43\00:07:36.93 material things? First of all, we need to take control of our 00:07:36.93\00:07:42.03 finances. Many families are putting themselves under unnecessary pressure 00:07:42.03\00:07:47.03 because of finances that are out of control. 00:07:47.03\00:07:51.90 A father gave his daughter a generous weekly allowance, on 00:07:51.90\00:07:58.00 the condition that she kept good records of how she spent the 00:07:58.00\00:08:03.60 money. At the end of the month, the dad was going to check on 00:08:03.60\00:08:06.00 how she spent the money. 00:08:06.00\00:08:08.40 When he checked on how she did, he was delighted that she had 00:08:08.40\00:08:13.56 kept good records. But he came across several items that were 00:08:13.56\00:08:21.36 listed as TLOK. In fact, about 1/5 of her money was listed this 00:08:21.36\00:08:27.10 way. He asked her what TLOK meant. 00:08:27.10\00:08:32.93 She said, "Well, it's this way. 00:08:32.93\00:08:35.93 Sometimes I did not jot down the amounts I spent. 00:08:35.93\00:08:41.40 When I sat down to try to jot down all that I spent, I couldn't for the life of 00:08:41.40\00:08:46.60 me remember where I had spent all that money. 00:08:46.60\00:08:49.90 I couldn't make my accounts balance, so I placed several 00:08:49.90\00:08:52.43 dollars under TLOK." 00:08:52.43\00:08:56.80 The father said, "But what does it mean?" 00:08:56.80\00:09:00.70 She said it means, "The Lord Only Knows!" 00:09:00.70\00:09:06.36 I suspect that a lot of families live by the TLOK method of 00:09:06.36\00:09:14.86 bookkeeping. We really don't know where the money goes. 00:09:14.86\00:09:19.23 Some need to cut up their credit cards. 00:09:19.23\00:09:22.46 Some need to cut back on eating out. 00:09:22.46\00:09:26.36 Some need to sit down with a credit counselor and ge out of 00:09:26.36\00:09:30.50 debt. Letting our finances get out of control can quickly 00:09:30.50\00:09:35.60 become a spiritual problem. 00:09:35.60\00:09:39.20 It can place an unnecessary burden on our marriage, on our 00:09:39.20\00:09:44.43 family life, even on our heart and emotions. 00:09:44.43\00:09:48.10 Take control of your finances. 00:09:48.10\00:09:52.13 Two. 00:09:52.13\00:09:53.96 Take control of your desires. 00:09:53.96\00:09:56.90 This one is a little more challenging. 00:09:56.90\00:10:00.90 Ask yourself, what would really improve your quality of life? 00:10:00.90\00:10:06.03 Often the things that will improve our lives are available 00:10:06.03\00:10:10.33 without a great outlay of money. 00:10:10.33\00:10:14.33 A couple of years back, a book came out titled Trading Up. 00:10:14.33\00:10:21.00 This book traced the roots of some of our misconceptions about 00:10:21.00\00:10:25.60 wealth. 00:10:25.60\00:10:27.86 The 1950s were a time of increasing prosperity in the 00:10:27.86\00:10:33.60 United States. But even as personal wealth grew, spending habits changed little. 00:10:33.60\00:10:40.36 The primary reason why Americans didn't become instant 00:10:40.36\00:10:45.43 shopaholics, according to these authors, is guilt. 00:10:45.43\00:10:49.03 This was a generation raised on hard work, thrift, and personal 00:10:49.03\00:10:54.00 sacrifice. 00:10:54.00\00:10:57.16 When marketers realized the potential wealth that was 00:10:57.16\00:11:01.80 accumulating in Americans' pockets, they changed their advertising campaigns to 00:11:01.80\00:11:06.33 encourage more spending. 00:11:06.33\00:11:09.03 In other words, advertisers sold us a picture of the good 00:11:43.66\00:11:47.60 life--that it consisted of the possessions that we accumulate. 00:11:47.60\00:11:53.40 And many bought into it. 00:11:53.40\00:11:57.70 How do you escape the trap? 00:11:57.70\00:12:01.80 Think about the really pleasurable times in your life. 00:12:01.80\00:12:07.00 Was money really necessary to your enjoyment? 00:12:07.00\00:12:11.30 For example, most of us need more exercise. 00:12:11.30\00:12:17.80 How about, rather than sitting all evening in front of the TV, 00:12:17.80\00:12:23.53 we resolve to take a walk each evening with our spouse? 00:12:23.53\00:12:29.53 The time spent together can be most pleasurable, as well as 00:12:29.53\00:12:36.80 being healthier than being a couch potato all evening. 00:12:36.80\00:12:38.96 Are there people you enjoy being around? 00:12:38.96\00:12:43.06 Some people get involved in church-- because they enjoy the 00:12:43.06\00:12:47.86 give and take of being with other like-minded people. 00:12:47.86\00:12:53.23 The method will differ for each of us, but we don't have to move 00:12:53.23\00:12:57.16 in lock-step with the materialistic society around us. 00:12:57.16\00:13:03.03 If we set our minds to it, we can find alternatives to a 00:13:03.03\00:13:08.53 lifestyle that requires constant accumulation. 00:13:08.53\00:13:12.30 Finally, and most important, remember that in our finances as 00:13:12.30\00:13:20.83 well as everything else, God comes first. 00:13:20.83\00:13:26.40 If anything in life comes before God, then we are not following 00:13:26.40\00:13:33.16 Jesus Christ. 00:13:33.16\00:13:35.76 If we can buy season hockey tickets, but cannot tithe, we 00:13:35.76\00:13:42.16 have a spiritual problem. 00:13:42.16\00:13:45.16 If we can make a payment on a nicer home, but cannot meet our 00:13:45.16\00:13:49.73 responsibilities to the church and to the poor, we are worshiping mammon and 00:13:49.73\00:13:58.90 not God. 00:13:58.90\00:14:01.33 That's tough talk, I know, I owe it to you to tell it like it is. 00:14:01.33\00:14:08.00 All that I am, all that I have 00:14:10.60\00:14:15.16 I lay them down before you, O Lord. 00:14:16.26\00:14:22.03 All my regrets and all my acclaim, 00:14:23.33\00:14:28.16 The joy and the pain, I'm making them yours. 00:14:29.46\00:14:36.56 Lord, I offer my life to you; 00:14:37.60\00:14:41.00 Everything I've been through, 00:14:42.06\00:14:45.86 Use it for your glory. 00:14:46.80\00:14:49.06 Lord, I offer my days to you, 00:14:50.10\00:14:53.70 Lifting my praise to you 00:14:54.53\00:14:58.66 As a pleasing sacrifice; 00:14:59.50\00:15:05.06 Lord, I offer you my life. 00:15:05.96\00:15:12.16 Things in the past, things yet unseen, 00:15:16.20\00:15:20.80 Wishes and dreams that are yet to come true. 00:15:22.16\00:15:27.33 All of my hopes and all of my plans, 00:15:28.46\00:15:33.70 My heart and my hand are lifted to you. 00:15:34.86\00:15:44.70 Lord, I offer my life to you; 00:15:45.76\00:15:49.30 Everything I've been through, 00:15:50.30\00:15:53.80 Use it for your glory. 00:15:54.60\00:15:56.93 Lord, I offer my days to you, 00:15:57.90\00:16:01.46 Lifting my praise to you 00:16:02.26\00:16:06.20 As a pleasing sacrifice; 00:16:06.96\00:16:12.46 Lord, I offer you my life. 00:16:13.36\00:16:19.13 Lord, I offer you my life. 00:16:20.66\00:16:26.60 My life. 00:16:34.16\00:16:38.00 >>Bill: Let us pray. 00:16:41.46\00:16:43.76 Gracious loving heavenly father, we thank you for the countless 00:16:43.76\00:16:47.76 blessings that you give each and every one of us. 00:16:47.76\00:16:50.70 We thank you for life, we thank you for your mercy, we thank you 00:16:50.70\00:16:53.30 for your grace. 00:16:53.30\00:16:55.66 And at this time, we think of those that may be suffering 00:16:55.66\00:16:59.66 under the burden of financial pressures. 00:16:59.66\00:17:02.93 Father, may they put you first in their life. 00:17:02.93\00:17:07.86 May they seek the kingdom of God first and realize in Jesus, all 00:17:07.86\00:17:14.00 of their needs can be fulfilled, for in his name we pray, amen. 00:17:14.00\00:17:19.00 >>Bev: Hi, everyone. 00:17:53.53\00:17:55.80 You've been hearing me talk about eating more raw, plants-based foods, 00:17:55.80\00:17:58.53 and today, I've got three super, super-easy, delicious ways to do 00:17:58.53\00:18:01.70 just that. 00:18:01.70\00:18:04.26 Eating more raw food is a powerfully effective way to improve your health 00:18:04.26\00:18:07.73 dramatically. 00:18:07.73\00:18:10.10 I'm talking about clearer skin, improved eyesight, reversal of 00:18:10.10\00:18:12.46 chronic diseases including cancer. 00:18:12.46\00:18:16.63 In fact, studies show that eating raw, fresh fruits and 00:18:16.63\00:18:20.23 vegetables is more effective at keeping us healthy than taking supplements that have a 00:18:20.23\00:18:21.00 limited number of phytochemicals. 00:18:21.00\00:18:27.03 There are just so many phytochemicals in vegetables and 00:18:27.03\00:18:29.83 fruits that haven't been discovered as yet and they all work in beautiful synergy 00:18:29.83\00:18:31.70 together. 00:18:31.70\00:18:37.20 So I have here the dynamic cookbook Eat Raw, Eat Well by my 00:18:37.20\00:18:40.90 friend and chef extraordinaire, Douglas McNish. 00:18:40.90\00:18:44.06 And today, I'm going to show you his trio of pastas. 00:18:44.06\00:18:47.33 I'm just going to adapt them a little bit. 00:18:47.33\00:18:49.80 You will not believe how fast and easy raw pasta can be. 00:18:49.80\00:18:53.00 And I know you're thinking, "Raw pasta? 00:18:53.00\00:18:55.50 " Watch and see. 00:18:55.50\00:18:58.76 First, we'll do the zucchini noodles and I'll add a little 00:18:58.76\00:19:00.76 tomato sauce to it. 00:19:00.76\00:19:02.86 All you need for this is a zucchini and a nifty little 00:19:02.86\00:19:06.10 kitchen appliance called a Spiralizer. 00:19:06.10\00:19:09.30 Zucchinis are a fantastic alternative to wheat pasta because there's so few 00:19:09.30\00:19:11.96 calories in the zucchini. 00:19:11.96\00:19:14.73 One cup has only twenty calories. 00:19:14.73\00:19:18.20 There's no fat, no cholesterol, very little sodium, plus there 00:19:18.20\00:19:22.00 is vitamins A, C, some of the B vitamins, and minerals calcium 00:19:22.00\00:19:27.76 and iron. You can substitute carrots, beets, parsnips, or sweet potatoes for the 00:19:27.76\00:19:31.13 zucchini. 00:19:31.13\00:19:32.80 Let me demo it for you. 00:19:32.80\00:19:35.46 You just have to insert the zucchini into this little 00:19:35.46\00:19:41.66 apparatus here. And, using manual labour. actually, I'll do it this way so you can see it 00:19:41.66\00:19:48.70 better. you just have to crank that out. 00:19:48.70\00:19:51.73 And you see, pasta. 00:19:51.73\00:19:54.03 Beautiful. 00:19:54.03\00:20:03.93 I'm going to just add that to my little stash there. 00:20:03.93\00:20:06.40 So that is zucchini pasta. 00:20:06.40\00:20:09.66 How easy was that? 00:20:09.66\00:20:12.16 Be careful with salt-containing toppings, though, when it comes 00:20:12.16\00:20:15.16 to zucchini, because salt can take the water out of the 00:20:15.16\00:20:18.70 zucchini. So let me place this over here. 00:20:18.70\00:20:22.00 And I'm just going to put the zucchini on this plate here and 00:20:22.00\00:20:30.80 add a nice, fresh tomato sauce to it. 00:20:30.80\00:20:37.83 Doesn't that look yummy already? 00:20:37.83\00:20:40.90 Beautiful. 00:20:40.90\00:20:44.33 Okay, so next, carrot fettuccini. 00:20:44.33\00:20:48.80 And all you need for this is your carrot and a vegetable 00:20:48.80\00:20:53.33 peeler and a sharp knife. 00:20:53.33\00:20:55.10 This is so easy. 00:20:55.10\00:20:57.20 All you're doing is using your vegetable peeler and doing that. 00:20:57.20\00:21:00.40 Nice and easy. 00:21:00.40\00:21:04.20 And if you wanted to. I won't do it this time 'cause these are 00:21:04.20\00:21:06.40 pretty small. 00:21:06.40\00:21:08.80 But if you wanted to, you would then stack these up and then 00:21:08.80\00:21:11.86 just kind of cut them in half. 00:21:11.86\00:21:14.30 But these ones are a nice, small size anyway. 00:21:14.30\00:21:16.80 And what I've done here, I've got some already marinating, I 00:21:16.80\00:21:19.26 added a little bit of vegetable oil and then a little bit of lemon, and the lemon is 00:21:19.26\00:21:23.46 going to soften them up beautifully and a little bit of 00:21:23.46\00:21:27.20 sea salt. Carrots, as we all know, are an excellent source of vitamins A, the Bs, C, and 00:21:27.20\00:21:32.93 K. 00:21:32.93\00:21:35.03 And again, there's no fats, no cholesterol. 00:21:35.03\00:21:36.76 There is potassium, calcium, and iron. 00:21:36.76\00:21:40.10 And although carrots are high in natural sugars, one cup of raw 00:21:40.10\00:21:42.73 carrots only has fifty-two calories. 00:21:42.73\00:21:46.40 So here we go. 00:21:46.40\00:21:48.66 I'm going to soften this up. 00:21:48.66\00:21:50.06 The lemon softens it. 00:21:50.06\00:21:52.53 And look, doesn't it look like pasta? 00:21:52.53\00:21:55.43 Here we go. 00:21:55.43\00:21:57.20 I'm going to plate this. 00:21:57.20\00:21:58.53 Look at that. 00:21:58.53\00:21:59.96 The colours are so gorgeous. 00:21:59.96\00:22:02.80 Beautiful. 00:22:02.80\00:22:05.90 And what you could do is to use a little bit of pesto and you 00:22:05.90\00:22:08.66 could actually just kind of pesto that in. 00:22:08.66\00:22:13.53 Isn't that gorgeous? 00:22:13.53\00:22:16.30 Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. 00:22:16.30\00:22:18.93 Okay. 00:22:18.93\00:22:21.36 The third one, and this one will amaze you, I'm sure, beets. 00:22:21.36\00:22:25.66 I'm going to make beet ravioli with a red pepper, dill, and 00:22:25.66\00:22:30.40 cashew ricotta cheese. 00:22:30.40\00:22:33.00 Okay. 00:22:33.00\00:22:34.63 We've got here the mandolin. 00:22:34.63\00:22:37.73 The good thing about all of this is, it's all vegan. 00:22:37.73\00:22:40.60 It's wonderful. 00:22:40.60\00:22:42.36 Beets are fantastic for your liver. 00:22:42.36\00:22:45.70 They are wonderful for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, 00:22:45.70\00:22:49.93 and detoxifying properties. 00:22:49.93\00:22:54.03 When you're using beets, be sure to also use the beet greens, as 00:22:54.03\00:22:55.80 they're loaded with great nutrition. 00:22:55.80\00:22:59.06 So for this recipe, for the beet recipe, all we need to make this 00:22:59.06\00:23:03.56 ravioli are some beets and a mandolin. 00:23:03.56\00:23:08.10 Now, your mom probably bought one of these, like my mom did, 00:23:08.10\00:23:10.96 years ago. So I've got my beet already stuck on here. 00:23:10.96\00:23:14.90 And I hope this is going to work nicely. 00:23:14.90\00:23:16.80 Let me get rid of that. 00:23:16.80\00:23:20.76 All you're going to do is slide it like so to get a nice, thin. 00:23:20.76\00:23:27.36 there we go.
