<>Announcer: It has stood the test of time. 00:01:48.10\00:01:50.03 God's book, The Bible 00:01:50.76\00:01:53.53 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:01:54.66\00:01:58.40 It Is Written. 00:01:59.20\00:02:00.53 Sharing messages of hope around the world. 00:02:01.70\00:02:05.23 Albrecht Durer's etchings, his woodworks, and his oils were far 00:02:16.36\00:02:20.06 better than those of most of his professors, and by the time he 00:02:20.06\00:02:25.13 graduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works. 00:02:25.13\00:02:30.00 When the young artist returned home to his village, the Durer 00:02:30.00\00:02:34.60 family held a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrecht's triumphant 00:02:34.60\00:02:38.06 homecoming. 00:02:38.06\00:02:40.70 After a delightful meal with lots of music and laughter, 00:02:40.70\00:02:44.56 Albrecht Durer rose from his honored position at the head of the table to express his 00:02:44.56\00:02:48.56 deep appreciation to his beloved brother, Albert, for the years 00:02:48.56\00:02:53.63 of sacrifice he had put in that had enabled Albrecht to fulfill 00:02:53.63\00:02:59.90 his ambition. His closing words were: "And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is 00:02:59.90\00:03:03.66 your turn. 00:03:03.66\00:03:06.26 Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream and I will 00:03:06.26\00:03:09.73 take care of you. 00:03:09.73\00:03:12.33 " All heads turned in love and eager expectation to the far end 00:03:12.33\00:03:16.16 of the table where Albert sat. 00:03:16.16\00:03:19.06 Tears were streaming down his face. 00:03:19.06\00:03:22.26 Slowly, Albert stood to his feet and softly he said, "Thank you, 00:03:22.26\00:03:26.96 my brother, but no I cannot go to Nuremberg. 00:03:26.96\00:03:30.20 It is too late for me. 00:03:30.20\00:03:32.70 Look, look what four years in the mine have done to my hands. 00:03:32.70\00:03:38.40 The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once, and 00:03:38.40\00:03:42.83 lately, I have been suffering from arthritis so badly in my right hand that I cannot 00:03:42.83\00:03:47.60 even hold a glass to return your toast, much less, make delicate 00:03:47.60\00:03:51.90 lines on parchment or canvas with a pen or a brush. 00:03:51.90\00:03:55.60 No, my brother, for me it is too late. 00:03:55.60\00:04:02.76 " More than 450 years have passed. 00:04:02.76\00:04:06.46 By now, Albrecht Durer's hundreds of masterful portraits, 00:04:06.46\00:04:11.46 pen and silver-point sketches, watercolors, charcoals, woodcuts, and copper 00:04:11.46\00:04:16.03 engravings hang in every great museum in the world, but the 00:04:16.03\00:04:22.33 odds are great that you, like most people, are familiar with only one of Albrecht 00:04:22.33\00:04:26.80 Durer's works. 00:04:26.80\00:04:29.83 More than merely being familiar with it, you very well may have 00:04:29.83\00:04:35.03 a reproduction hanging in your home or office. 00:04:35.03\00:04:39.53 One day, to pay homage to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, 00:04:39.53\00:04:45.40 Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother's abused hands with palms together and 00:04:45.40\00:04:51.53 thin fingers stretched skyward. 00:04:51.53\00:04:56.23 He called his powerful drawing simply "Hands", but the entire 00:04:56.23\00:05:01.00 world almost immediately opened their hearts to this great masterpiece and renamed 00:05:01.00\00:05:06.06 his tribute of love, "The Praying Hands. 00:05:06.06\00:05:12.46 " The next time you see a copy of this touching creation, take 00:05:12.46\00:05:15.40 a second look; let it be a reminder that no one. no one ever makes it alone! 00:05:15.40\00:05:24.96 Take Simon Peter, for example. 00:05:24.96\00:05:27.76 He was one of the great leaders of the original disciples of 00:05:27.76\00:05:30.63 Jesus. He was one of the great servants of the early church. 00:05:30.63\00:05:34.56 He was one of the most beloved and respected saints in the 00:05:34.56\00:05:38.20 history of the world, but he did not achieve that all by himself. 00:05:38.20\00:05:42.60 The truth is we are incredibly indebted to Simon Peter's 00:05:42.60\00:05:48.20 brother, Andrew, for the gift of Peter to the church and to the 00:05:48.20\00:05:52.40 world. Andrew was the one who brought his brother, Simon Peter, into the presence 00:05:52.40\00:05:56.66 of Jesus. 00:05:56.66\00:06:00.33 Let's meet another of the disciples, Andrew, Peter's 00:06:00.33\00:06:05.13 brother. By the way, his name means manly. 00:06:05.13\00:06:08.06 He too was a native of Bethsaida, that little village 00:06:08.06\00:06:14.13 in Galilee. And he like his brother was a fisherman. 00:06:14.13\00:06:17.00 In fact, in Matthew 4 he was down at the sea when Jesus came 00:06:17.00\00:06:23.00 along, he had already met Jesus, he had already believed in Jesus, he had already affirmed 00:06:23.00\00:06:29.36 Him as the Messiah, but after going back to his fishing, now 00:06:29.36\00:06:34.36 the Lord appears again to him at the shore, and calls him permanently to follow and 00:06:34.36\00:06:39.06 He will make him a fisher of men. 00:06:39.06\00:06:44.96 Prior to coming to follow Jesus Christ he had been a pious Jew, 00:06:44.96\00:06:50.63 he had been a godly Jew, he had been a God- fearing Jew. 00:06:50.63\00:06:53.90 He had also been a disciple of John the Baptist. 00:06:53.90\00:06:58.00 In fact, it was one day at the message of John the Baptist that 00:06:58.00\00:07:00.86 his life was changed. 00:07:00.86\00:07:03.30 For John the Baptist saw Jesus in John 1 and said: "Behold, the 00:07:03.30\00:07:07.70 Lamb of God." And Andrew was there that day, along with John who was also a fisherman , and 00:07:07.70\00:07:11.20 surely an acquaintance as well as was James. 00:07:11.20\00:07:17.53 And he and John heard John the Baptist say that, and they followed after Jesus 00:07:17.53\00:07:22.33 immediately and Jesus turned and said to them, "What seek you?" 00:07:22.33\00:07:25.90 And they replied, "Where do You dwell?" 00:07:25.90\00:07:29.10 And they went where Jesus dwelt and they spent the entire day 00:07:29.10\00:07:33.43 with Him and immediately it says that Andrew opened his mouth and 00:07:33.43\00:07:37.16 said these first words, "We have found the Messiah." 00:07:37.16\00:07:40.50 No sooner did Andrew discover the reality of Jesus Christ for 00:07:40.50\00:07:46.30 himself, than that he announced to his brother Peter that very 00:07:46.30\00:07:48.93 phrase, "We have found the Messiah." 00:07:48.93\00:07:51.93 Peter and Andrew lived together, it says in Mark 1:29. 00:07:51.93\00:07:57.10 And no doubt they shared everything. 00:07:57.10\00:08:00.53 And especially did Andrew want to share with him the Messiah. 00:08:00.53\00:08:05.00 And so from this very beginning he becomes a part of that 00:08:05.00\00:08:07.96 intimate four. 00:08:07.96\00:08:11.66 In fact, if you study through the New Testament, it's James 00:08:11.66\00:08:18.60 and Peter and John and Peter, James and John, and John and Peter and James, they're always 00:08:18.60\00:08:23.63 the inner circle and nobody is ever let into that inner circle 00:08:23.63\00:08:29.03 except once when Andrew gets in and it's Peter, James, John and 00:08:29.03\00:08:34.70 Andrew in one incident. 00:08:34.70\00:08:38.23 He was in the most intimate four but he never quite cracked that 00:08:38.23\00:08:41.73 inside three. 00:08:41.73\00:08:44.13 But he was greatly respected. 00:08:44.13\00:08:47.66 In fact, Philip who was in group two, a little less intimate with 00:08:47.66\00:08:53.50 the Lord, one time had some Greeks come to him and say - We 00:08:53.50\00:08:59.10 want to see Jesus. And you know where Philip took them? 00:08:59.10\00:09:02.00 He took them to Andrew. 00:09:02.00\00:09:03.30 Why? 00:09:03.30\00:09:05.93 Because I guess Philip thought that if you want to get to Jesus 00:09:05.93\00:09:11.03 all you've got to do is get to Andrew. 00:09:11.03\00:09:13.70 Andrew was intimate with Jesus. 00:09:13.70\00:09:15.86 And Andrew was respected. 00:09:15.86\00:09:18.70 And even yet he isn't in the inner three. 00:09:18.70\00:09:22.56 But all of a sudden in the fourth gospel, the gospel of John, Andrew begins to 00:09:22.56\00:09:27.40 emerge from the background. 00:09:27.40\00:09:30.76 And we see Andrew three times in the gospel of John. 00:09:30.76\00:09:34.46 And all three times Andrew is doing the same thing. 00:09:34.46\00:09:38.50 It's easy to characterize him. 00:09:38.50\00:09:42.16 The first time is in John chapter 1 verse 40 which I just 00:09:42.16\00:09:46.53 reported to you. It says in John 1:40; 00:09:46.53\00:09:51.80 And by the way, Andrew is always called Simon Peter's brother 00:10:03.40\00:10:09.10 with, I think, one or two exceptions, maybe just one. 00:10:09.10\00:10:13.20 That's always how he's identified. 00:10:13.20\00:10:15.83 "And he first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, 00:10:15.83\00:10:21.26 We have found the Messiah," which is being interpreted the Christ, the anointed one, 00:10:21.26\00:10:25.70 "and he brought him to Jesus." 00:10:25.70\00:10:29.43 Now if you want to know how to characterize the life of Andrew 00:10:29.43\00:10:34.90 it's very simple, he is the one who was always bringing people 00:10:34.90\00:10:38.26 to Jesus. The second time we see him is in the sixth chapter of John and the eighth and 00:10:38.26\00:10:43.86 ninth verse John 6: 8 - 9. 00:10:43.86\00:10:47.16 A vast multitude of people are gathered, Jesus is teaching, 00:11:01.13\00:11:04.33 it's late in the day, the crowd is hungry. 00:11:04.33\00:11:06.70 There's not enough food and Andrew brings to Jesus this time 00:11:06.70\00:11:11.33 a little boy. And the little boy has five loaves and two fish. 00:11:11.33\00:11:13.93 It doesn't mean five big loaves of bread, it means five little 00:11:13.93\00:11:20.16 flat barley crackers and two fish. 00:11:20.16\00:11:23.73 And they would take those fish and they would pickle them and 00:11:23.73\00:11:27.63 then they would eat them with the crackers. 00:11:27.63\00:11:30.00 So he brought a little fellow with five barley crackers and 00:11:30.00\00:11:33.23 two pickled fish. 00:11:33.23\00:11:34.50 He brought him to Jesus. 00:11:34.50\00:11:36.70 I guess Andrew must have thought the Lord could make a whole lot 00:11:36.70\00:11:40.93 out of a very little. 00:11:40.93\00:11:43.63 The third time we meet him is in John 12. 00:11:43.63\00:11:48.46 And I've already alluded to that incident. 00:11:48.46\00:11:50.16 And in John 12: 20 00:11:50.16\00:11:52.93 Philip is approached by the Greeks, or the Gentiles, and 00:12:07.26\00:12:11.56 they want to see Jesus. 00:12:11.56\00:12:13.63 And Philip tells Andrew and together they went to Jesus. 00:12:13.63\00:12:18.60 The assumption being that they took the folks there too. 00:12:18.60\00:12:24.80 And so, whenever you see Andrew he is involved in finding Jesus 00:12:24.80\00:12:30.63 so that Jesus can meet someone, bringing people to Jesus. 00:12:30.63\00:12:37.53 I guess maybe he didn't think there was anybody that Jesus 00:12:37.53\00:12:42.03 didn't want to see. 00:12:42.03\00:12:44.23 Or there was anything Jesus couldn't respond to, or there 00:12:44.23\00:12:47.83 was any problem Jesus couldn't solve. 00:12:47.83\00:12:50.13 Because he's characterized as the one who brought men to 00:12:50.13\00:12:54.23 Christ. Now in these three incidents, if I can just sort of 00:12:54.23\00:13:01.06 draw some pictures for you, in these three incidents several things become clear. 00:13:01.06\00:13:04.83 First of all we see Andrew's openness. 00:13:04.83\00:13:08.43 He knew that they were to go to the lost sheep of the house of 00:13:08.43\00:13:13.60 Israel. He knew that primarily it was the Jew first and then to 00:13:13.60\00:13:18.63 the Gentile. And yet he also got the spirit of our Lord because the Lord originally had 00:13:18.63\00:13:23.73 revealed His Messiahship to a Samaritan woman, so Andrew was 00:13:23.73\00:13:28.40 never choked by a hyper-Judaism. 00:13:28.40\00:13:32.36 I mean, he didn't have any problem at all with bringing 00:13:32.36\00:13:35.00 some Gentiles to Jesus. 00:13:35.00\00:13:37.13 So we sense a little bit of the openness of his heart. 00:13:37.13\00:13:40.83 There just wasn't anybody outside, there wasn't anybody 00:13:40.83\00:13:43.40 that he didn't think Jesus would not want to see. 00:13:43.40\00:13:46.86 We also see his faith. 00:13:46.86\00:13:49.33 He had a simple faith. 00:13:49.33\00:13:51.60 I don't know what he was thinking when he brought those 00:13:51.60\00:13:55.46 five crackers and two fish with such a huge crowd. 00:13:55.46\00:13:58.56 I don't know what he was trying to do, running around looking 00:13:58.56\00:14:00.43 for whoever had a lunch. 00:14:00.43\00:14:02.66 But he must have had some kind of faith to believe that the 00:14:02.66\00:14:06.83 Lord could do something with that. 00:14:06.83\00:14:10.56 After all he had seen Jesus make wine, why couldn't He make food? 00:14:10.56\00:14:17.53 A third thing we see is not only his openness and his faith but 00:14:17.53\00:14:22.23 we see his humility. 00:14:22.23\00:14:25.46 I mean, he spent his whole life being known as Simon Peter's 00:14:25.46\00:14:29.83 brother. And now when he had found the Messiah, there might have been a temptation to 00:14:29.83\00:14:33.96 say -Boy, now I'm not telling Peter. 00:14:33.96\00:14:38.30 This is my chance to be somebody. 00:14:38.30\00:14:41.53 But no he runs to get Peter knowing full well that as soon 00:14:41.53\00:14:46.43 as Peter enters the group he will run the group, because 00:14:46.43\00:14:50.50 that's Peter. And Andrew will be right back where he's always been, as Simon Peter's 00:14:50.50\00:14:56.30 brother. 00:14:56.30\00:15:01.46 But he thought more of the work to be done then who was in 00:15:01.46\00:15:06.13 charge. He thought more of the cause of the eternal virtue of 00:15:06.13\00:15:09.90 the Kingdom then he did of his personal and petty problems. 00:15:09.90\00:15:13.43 Sad to say but there are some people who won't play in the 00:15:13.43\00:15:17.06 band unless they can beat the big drum. 00:15:17.06\00:15:19.40 James and John had that problem, didn't they? 00:15:19.40\00:15:21.70 But not Andrew. 00:15:21.70\00:15:24.56 I don't find Andrew fighting about whose going to get the 00:15:24.56\00:15:27.26 glory in the Kingdom. 00:15:27.26\00:15:29.60 You see, Andrew is the picture of all those who labor quietly 00:15:29.60\00:15:32.93 in humble places. 00:15:32.93\00:15:35.20 Not with eye service as men pleasers but as servants of 00:15:35.20\00:15:39.93 Christ doing the will of God from the heart. 00:15:39.93\00:15:44.40 Andrew is not the pillar like Peter, James and John, he is a 00:15:44.40\00:15:47.46 humbler stone. 00:15:47.46\00:15:49.76 I mean, after all, he was one of the original two called and yet 00:15:49.76\00:15:54.43 he wasn't in the inner three but it didn't seem to bother him. 00:15:54.43\00:16:00.46 He was always Peter's brother. 00:16:00.46\00:16:05.66 He's one of those rare people who's willing to take second 00:16:05.66\00:16:09.63 place. One of those rare people who wants to be in support. 00:16:09.63\00:16:13.83 Or one of those rare people who doesn't mind being hidden as 00:16:13.83\00:16:17.20 long as the work is done. 00:16:17.20\00:16:19.33 He is the kind of man that all leaders depend on. 00:16:19.33\00:16:23.23 He's the kind of person that everyone knows is the backbone 00:16:23.23\00:16:26.06 of every ministry. 00:16:26.06\00:16:29.03 The cause of Christ is dependent, beloved, on self-forgetting souls who 00:16:29.03\00:16:35.30 are content to occupy a small sphere and an obscure place, 00:16:35.30\00:16:42.23 free from self-seeking ambition and yet he will sit on the throne judging the tribes 00:16:42.23\00:16:50.63 of Israel. 00:16:50.63\00:16:53.16 Daniel Mc Lean, a Scotsman, who has a special affection for 00:16:53.16\00:16:58.60 Andrew writes about his beloved Apostle these words: 00:16:58.60\00:17:01.73 God uses people like that. 00:18:03.16\00:18:06.63 And only God can calculate their value because sometimes it takes 00:18:06.63\00:18:10.00 an Andrew to reach a Peter. 00:18:10.00\00:18:13.83 There's an early Methodist preacher, his name was Thomas 00:18:13.83\00:18:16.76 Mitchell. You never heard of him. 00:18:16.76\00:18:19.20 I had never heard of him. 00:18:19.20\00:18:20.76 But he was an Andrew. 00:18:20.76\00:18:23.83 And he died and the conference of ministers who ministered with 00:18:23.83\00:18:29.16 him wrote his obituary and this is what it said: 00:18:29.16\00:18:31.03 How's that for an obituary? 00:18:42.13\00:18:45.33 Slender abilities and a defective education. 00:18:45.33\00:18:49.30 And yet one friend wrote this: 00:18:49.30\00:18:52.33 A man of slender abilities and defective education yet he was 00:19:00.66\00:19:06.46 the means in God's hands of bringing to Christ one of the greatest of early preachers by 00:19:06.46\00:19:13.80 the name of Thomas Olivers, the writer of the great hymn, "The 00:19:13.80\00:19:17.03 God of Abraham Praised." 00:19:17.03\00:19:18.93 A man of slender abilities? 00:19:18.93\00:19:21.63 That is the official record and yet one of the strongest and 00:19:21.63\00:19:27.53 most faithful souls who ever lived. 00:19:27.53\00:19:32.30 It was he who went to the little village of Rangal in 00:19:32.30\00:19:38.00 Lincoln-shire, and arose at 5 o'clock in the mornings to preach the gospel in the open 00:19:38.00\00:19:40.83 air. And so fiery was his preaching that he was arrested. 00:19:40.83\00:19:44.33 And in the midst of his arrest a mob attacked him. 00:19:44.33\00:19:48.03 He was taken to the public house and the curate of the village 00:19:48.03\00:19:51.60 was consulted as to what to do with him. 00:19:51.60\00:19:54.03 They said don't let him go and so they decided they'd put him 00:19:54.03\00:19:57.93 in the pond. They took him to a pond which was full of filth and 00:19:57.93\00:20:02.70 they threw him in. He tried to get out and seven times they 00:20:02.70\00:20:05.46 threw him back in. Then he was taken again to the public house, having been in the meantime 00:20:05.46\00:20:08.70 painted from his head to foot with white paint. 00:20:08.70\00:20:13.16 Then they didn't know what to do with him so they decided to 00:20:13.16\00:20:17.13 drown him. They dragged him to a railed in small lake outside the 00:20:17.13\00:20:21.90 village which was at least ten feet deep and they took him in their arms and threw him into 00:20:21.90\00:20:24.86 the water. 00:20:24.86\00:20:27.10 He sank to the bottom and when he came up to the surface and 00:20:27.10\00:20:30.80 man in the crowd with a long pole and a hook on the end, played with him as if he were a 00:20:30.80\00:20:33.63 fish. 00:20:33.63\00:20:36.20 They brought him out more dead than alive and he was taken to a 00:20:36.20\00:20:40.83 little house in the village where he was looked after by a 00:20:40.83\00:20:44.66 pious lady. But when the mob found that he was recovering they sought him out and 00:20:44.66\00:20:48.50 went to the house and to his bedside and said they would rend 00:20:48.50\00:20:52.03 him limb from limb unless he promised never to preach again. 00:20:52.03\00:20:56.90 To which he said - I can promise no such thing. 00:20:56.90\00:21:02.00 And somehow or other he got away from the place and he made this 00:21:02.00\00:21:08.23 record of the whole incident. 00:21:08.23\00:21:10.76 He wrote, "All the time God kept me in perfect peace and I was 00:21:10.76\00:21:15.03 able to pray for my enemies." 00:21:15.03\00:21:19.90 It doesn't sound like a man of slender abilities to me. 00:21:19.90\00:21:23.90 No one knows about him. 00:21:23.90\00:21:26.93 No one ever heard of him. 00:21:26.93\00:21:30.43 He ministered in obscurity. 00:21:30.43\00:21:33.06 He was a faithful man. 00:21:33.06\00:21:35.36 God needs Thomas Mitchells. 00:21:35.36\00:21:37.53 God needs Andrews. 00:21:37.53\00:21:40.16 People who quietly obscurely bring others to Jesus. 00:21:40.16\00:21:46.50 I regret the hours I have wasted 00:21:49.60\00:21:55.16 and the pleasures I have tasted 00:21:56.23\00:21:59.10 that you were never in. 00:21:59.90\00:22:04.30 And I confess that though your love is in me, 00:22:05.60\00:22:11.13 it doesn't always win me 00:22:12.10\00:22:15.96 when competing with my sin. 00:22:16.93\00:22:21.80 And I repent, making no excuses. 00:22:22.93\00:22:30.56 I repent no one else to blame. 00:22:31.60\00:22:38.90 And I return to fall in love with Jesus. 00:22:39.96\00:22:47.86 I bow down on my knees and I repent. 00:22:49.00\00:22:59.83 I lament the idols I've accepted, 00:23:05.93\00:23:11.20 the commandments I've rejected 00:23:12.10\00:23:15.30 to pursue my selfish end. 00:23:16.06\00:23:21.26 And I confess I need you to revive me, 00:23:22.33\00:23:27.46 put selfishness behind me 00:23:28.23\00:23:31.86 and take up my cross agian. 00:23:32.73\00:23:37.86 And I repent, making no excuses. 00:23:38.86\00:23:46.96 I repent no one else to blame. 00:23:47.96\00:23:55.40 And I return to fall in love with Jesus. 00:23:56.60\00:24:04.20 I bow down on my knees... 00:24:05.00\00:24:09.66 And I return to fall in love with Jesus. 00:24:10.83\00:24:20.23 I bow down on my knees and I repent. 00:24:21.26\00:24:34.90 I bow down on my knees and I repent. 00:24:34.90\00:24:39.70 >>Bill: Thank You, Father, for Andrew, and the lesson of his 00:24:52.10\00:24:54.73 life.
