BILL: On today's It Is Written program, we're going to be 00:00:02.10\00:00:04.13 talking Christian education. 00:00:04.13\00:00:06.80 If you have high school-aged children in your home or 00:00:06.80\00:00:11.26 soon-to-be high school-aged children in your home, you're not going to want to miss our 00:00:11.26\00:00:14.43 discussion with our two special guests. 00:00:14.43\00:00:18.23 It Is Written begins right now. 00:00:18.23\00:00:20.80 >>Announcer: It has stood the test of time. 00:00:33.66\00:00:35.83 God's book, The Bible 00:00:36.66\00:00:39.16 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:00:40.26\00:00:43.60 It Is Written. 00:00:44.23\00:00:46.16 Sharing messages of hope around the world. 00:00:47.36\00:00:50.20 I want to welcome all of our viewers to this week's It Is 00:01:00.90\00:01:03.86 Written program. Thank you for taking the time to join us. 00:01:03.86\00:01:07.03 I have two guests here in studio with me. 00:01:07.03\00:01:09.70 Today we're going to be talking about Christian education. 00:01:09.70\00:01:12.96 Some of you, as I said in the introduction, may have high school-aged children 00:01:12.96\00:01:18.00 at home, or soon-to-be high school-aged children, and you're 00:01:18.00\00:01:21.80 thinking about different options for their education for high 00:01:21.80\00:01:25.23 school. Well, I think one of the viable options, an excellent 00:01:25.23\00:01:28.46 option, is Christian education. 00:01:28.46\00:01:30.86 And so we wanted to talk about that today, and I invited two 00:01:30.86\00:01:34.03 guests. I have Principal Scott Bowes and Pastor Jared Brown. 00:01:34.03\00:01:39.80 They are both from Kingsway College, which is located in 00:01:39.80\00:01:42.83 Oshawa. Gentlemen, thank you so much for the opportunity to join 00:01:42.83\00:01:46.40 us. I appreciate you guys making the effort to be here. 00:01:46.40\00:01:48.73 SCOTT BOWES: Thank you for having us. 00:01:48.73\00:01:50.50 JARED BROWN: Thank you. 00:01:50.50\00:01:53.03 BILL: Why don't you give us a little bit of a background on 00:01:53.03\00:01:55.53 Kingsway College, where it's located, you know, the size of 00:01:55.53\00:01:57.83 your campus, when it began, just to give us a picture of what the school is all about? 00:01:57.83\00:01:59.66 SCOTT BOWES: Sure. 00:01:59.66\00:02:01.76 Kingsway started in 1903, located in Oshawa, Ontario, so 00:02:01.76\00:02:05.86 about 45 minutes east of Toronto. 00:02:05.86\00:02:09.20 We're sitting on about 100 acres, so it's a beautiful, 00:02:09.20\00:02:13.30 almost like a park-like setting. 00:02:13.30\00:02:16.03 It's a huge campus for a small high school, so it's a beautiful 00:02:16.03\00:02:19.53 place for students to go to school. 00:02:19.53\00:02:22.83 And it's just a great place to be. 00:02:22.83\00:02:25.60 BILL: Now, it's a high school? 00:02:25.60\00:02:27.40 SCOTT BOWES: It is a high school. 00:02:27.40\00:02:28.93 BILL: So grade 9 through 12? 00:02:28.93\00:02:30.83 SCOTT BOWES: Grade 9 through 12. 00:02:30.83\00:02:32.90 We offer the Ontario secondary school diploma, the same that 00:02:32.90\00:02:34.20 you would get at other institutions. 00:02:34.20\00:02:36.26 But obviously, we feel that we're pretty special in some 00:02:36.26\00:02:38.43 other areas as well. 00:02:38.43\00:02:40.03 BILL: You're also a boarding school? 00:02:40.03\00:02:41.70 SCOTT BOWES: We are a boarding school. 00:02:41.70\00:02:43.83 We have close to 100 students living in the dorm, and then 00:02:43.83\00:02:47.13 about the same that are community students as well. 00:02:47.13\00:02:50.90 We're a very multicultural school; a lot of different nationalities represented 00:02:50.90\00:02:53.56 there. 00:02:53.56\00:02:55.80 So again, just a great opportunity for either people in 00:02:55.80\00:02:59.10 the local community or for people from a distance to attend 00:02:59.10\00:03:03.03 Kingsway College. BILL: Let's talk a little bit about the 00:03:03.03\00:03:04.90 school. So you know, let me give you the scenario. 00:03:04.90\00:03:08.26 So you know, I'm a parent. 00:03:08.26\00:03:10.40 I'm sitting at home; I'm watching the program. 00:03:10.40\00:03:11.90 I've tuned in to It Is Written. 00:03:11.90\00:03:14.26 And I have some children that are high school age or about to 00:03:14.26\00:03:18.66 become high school age, and I'm thinking about, "Does Christian 00:03:18.66\00:03:20.50 education really work for us? 00:03:20.50\00:03:22.30 " So why would someone choose Kingsway College? 00:03:22.30\00:03:28.30 I mean, why would someone choose Christian education, maybe? 00:03:28.30\00:03:31.50 And then specifically, why would they choose Kingsway College? 00:03:31.50\00:03:34.63 What do you guys offer that would be unique? 00:03:34.63\00:03:36.63 SCOTT BOWES: Okay. 00:03:36.63\00:03:39.00 Usually probably the first question that people ask actually centres around 00:03:39.00\00:03:42.80 the academic program. 00:03:42.80\00:03:44.93 Academically at Kingsway, the program is very, very strong. 00:03:44.93\00:03:49.66 We have a small teacher-to-student ratio. 00:03:49.66\00:03:55.66 So a great opportunity for kids to get a lot of extra help. 00:03:55.66\00:03:59.43 Our graduation rate over the last five years is 95.3%. 00:03:59.43\00:04:02.50 BILL: Wow. 00:04:02.50\00:04:05.66 SCOTT BOWES: And all of those go on to a university or a college. 00:04:05.66\00:04:08.53 And so again, a very high percentage. 00:04:08.53\00:04:12.26 Outside of the academic program, though, which, to be honest, 00:04:12.26\00:04:17.73 there are a lot of schools that have a great academic program, there are a lot of other 00:04:17.73\00:04:20.46 things that Kingsway has to offer, from great 00:04:20.46\00:04:23.20 extracurricular opportunities, the spiritual programming, which 00:04:23.20\00:04:26.76 you'll hear more about from Jared a little later on in the 00:04:26.76\00:04:29.63 program. There's just so many opportunities for the kids to 00:04:29.63\00:04:31.50 get involved in. Our outreach program as well. 00:04:31.50\00:04:33.83 It's just a great place for the kids to have options. 00:04:33.83\00:04:37.26 BILL: I don't know if you know this, but that 95% graduation, 00:04:37.26\00:04:41.93 how would that compare, let's say, to other schools? 00:04:41.93\00:04:44.80 SCOTT BOWES: Yeah. 00:04:44.80\00:04:47.13 Dalton McGuinty in 2010 released a report that public school 00:04:47.13\00:04:51.80 students in Ontario, 72% of them graduate after four years, and 81% after five years 00:04:51.80\00:04:57.73 of high school. 00:04:57.73\00:05:00.60 So that compares to the 95.3. 00:05:00.60\00:05:03.70 And then the study that Queens University did in 2009 states 00:05:03.70\00:05:06.10 that of Ontario graduates, only 60% of them attend postsecondary 00:05:06.10\00:05:11.86 education. So it's quite a difference. 00:05:11.86\00:05:15.90 BILL: Now, to what do you attribute that higher success 00:05:15.90\00:05:18.36 rate? SCOTT BOWES: I would attribute it to a few different 00:05:18.36\00:05:20.43 things, to be honest. 00:05:20.43\00:05:22.50 One is the caring that the students get from the teachers. 00:05:22.50\00:05:25.50 There's a lot of effort and a lot of extra time that goes into 00:05:25.50\00:05:29.50 making sure these students are prepared to be successful at the 00:05:29.50\00:05:32.76 next level. And honestly, I think it's the families. 00:05:32.76\00:05:35.53 Families who are willing to spend money to send their child 00:05:35.53\00:05:38.50 to private school, to Christian education, are very serious 00:05:38.50\00:05:43.00 about education. And so they have the commitment as well as 00:05:43.00\00:05:46.83 the school. And that combination together tends to create 00:05:46.83\00:05:49.86 successful kids. BILL: Hmm. 00:05:49.86\00:05:51.90 The cost of the school as compared to other private 00:05:51.90\00:05:58.20 schools. Because you know, that is a consideration for some 00:05:58.20\00:06:00.06 folks. SCOTT BOWES: Absolutely. 00:06:00.06\00:06:02.30 Compared to private schools, we're very, very cheap. 00:06:02.30\00:06:06.06 A boarding student can attend Kingsway College in most cases 00:06:06.06\00:06:12.33 for quite a bit less money than the tuition at other private schools, not counting the 00:06:12.33\00:06:15.43 boarding. 00:06:15.43\00:06:17.26 BILL: Wow. 00:06:17.26\00:06:20.20 So that's room, meals, and then their tuition. 00:06:20.20\00:06:23.23 SCOTT BOWES: And their tuition. 00:06:23.23\00:06:24.96 BILL: Jared, you're the chaplain on campus. 00:06:24.96\00:06:27.13 JARED BROWN: That's correct. 00:06:27.13\00:06:29.63 BILL: And how long have you been with Kingsway? 00:06:29.63\00:06:31.96 JARED BROWN: This is my fourth school year. 00:06:31.96\00:06:33.10 BILL: Wow. 00:06:33.10\00:06:34.50 So what's that been like? 00:06:34.50\00:06:36.43 Had you ever worked in a school setting like this before? 00:06:36.43\00:06:37.90 JARED BROWN: Never. 00:06:37.90\00:06:39.23 BILL: So what was that like? 00:06:39.23\00:06:41.16 JARED BROWN: It was a lot different than I was expecting. 00:06:41.16\00:06:42.36 BILL: Now, you had pastored churches? 00:06:42.36\00:06:44.10 JARED BROWN: That's right. 00:06:44.10\00:06:45.16 BILL: Yeah. 00:06:45.16\00:06:47.20 JARED BROWN: And I had worked with young people at summer 00:06:47.20\00:06:49.66 camps for a week, but I had never committed my full ministry time to young people. 00:06:49.66\00:06:51.40 So it's been really exciting. 00:06:51.40\00:06:52.80 BILL: Well, great. 00:06:52.80\00:06:54.93 Well, we're going to get a chance to talk a little bit more 00:06:54.93\00:06:57.26 with both of you. But I know you've prepared sort of a promotional video as sort of an 00:06:57.26\00:07:01.96 overview to our viewers of Kingsway College. 00:07:01.96\00:07:05.26 Let's just show that right now and we'll come back and talk 00:07:05.26\00:07:07.63 about some of the other unique aspects of Kingsway College. 00:07:07.63\00:07:09.06 SCOTT BOWES: Sounds good. 00:07:09.06\00:07:09.96 NARRATOR: With the mission of preparing Canadian youth for 00:07:27.36\00:07:30.50 God's service, Adventist Education in Canada began over a century ago in 1903 with 00:07:30.50\00:07:34.60 this small school then known as Lornedale Academy. 00:07:34.60\00:07:38.30 But Lornedale did not remain small for long. 00:07:38.30\00:07:41.53 Under God's leading, it grew and prospered and continue to train 00:07:41.53\00:07:45.60 generations of young men and women to this day, where now the 00:07:45.60\00:07:49.63 Kingsway College alumni family has grown to over 4,000. 00:07:49.63\00:07:52.90 Looking at Canada today, one can even find Kingsway alumni 00:07:52.90\00:08:00.20 serving in a variety of roles in every province of this country. 00:08:00.20\00:08:03.10 Kingsway alumni may even be serving in your community. 00:08:03.10\00:08:07.26 Kingsway cherishes its history and alumni and remains true to 00:08:07.26\00:08:11.46 its original mission. 00:08:11.46\00:08:14.93 It seeks to introduce students to Jesus Christ and to prepare 00:08:14.93\00:08:17.53 them for a life of service to God and others. 00:08:17.53\00:08:21.73 Kingsway aims to help students grow spiritually, to encourage 00:08:21.73\00:08:29.50 them to make a decision for Christ, and to lead out in His ministry; to help students 00:08:29.50\00:08:34.83 achieve their highest potential academically; to develop their 00:08:34.83\00:08:40.10 critical thinking skills and view every topic from a scriptural point of view; 00:08:40.10\00:08:43.93 to help students grow physically with a wide variety of physical 00:08:43.93\00:08:49.03 activities and experience a balanced Christian lifestyle; to 00:08:49.03\00:08:54.03 help them grow socially by providing opportunities to make lifelong friends who share 00:08:54.03\00:08:59.40 their beliefs and have respect for all people. 00:08:59.40\00:09:03.76 It is our aim to inspire young men and women to be thinkers and 00:09:03.76\00:09:09.03 not mere reflectors of other men's thoughts. 00:09:09.03\00:09:12.60 There is no more important work than to prepare our youth for 00:09:12.60\00:09:15.60 eternity. Give the gift of Adventist Education. 00:09:15.60\00:09:21.36 Contact Kingsway College today. 00:09:21.36\00:09:23.20 BILL: Well, that'll give folks a better picture of the school. 00:09:34.50\00:09:38.16 Now, let's talk a little bit about some of the extracurricular, besides 00:09:38.16\00:09:41.13 the academics. 00:09:41.13\00:09:44.23 Talk to us a little bit about that, Scott. 00:09:44.23\00:09:45.70 SCOTT BOWES: Sure. 00:09:45.70\00:09:47.90 One of the things Kingsway is really known for is their 00:09:47.90\00:09:51.23 touring groups. We have three touring groups on campus: the Aerials, the band, and the 00:09:51.23\00:09:53.46 choir. 00:09:53.46\00:09:56.36 The band and the choir is pretty straightforward; I think everybody knows what 00:09:56.36\00:09:57.90 that is. 00:09:57.90\00:09:59.36 The Aerials is our gymnastics team. 00:09:59.36\00:10:02.06 All three groups get the opportunity to travel extensively throughout 00:10:02.06\00:10:05.03 Canada and even into the United States, getting a lot of 00:10:05.03\00:10:10.23 opportunities to perform and share the message of Kingsway and the message about what 00:10:10.23\00:10:14.66 Christ has done for them in their lives. 00:10:14.66\00:10:17.76 So it's been a great opportunity for the kids. 00:10:17.76\00:10:20.36 They also have the opportunity to perform at the General Motors 00:10:20.36\00:10:23.30 Centre in Oshawa for an Oshawa Power basketball game. 00:10:23.30\00:10:27.13 Our Aerials have been featured in the Toronto Star in a recent 00:10:27.13\00:10:31.50 article. So it's been a great thing for the kids to be 00:10:31.50\00:10:35.36 involved in. BILL: Yeah, I'm a little biased because my son was on the Aerials and they do 00:10:35.36\00:10:37.96 a tremendous, tremendous job. 00:10:37.96\00:10:42.06 And really promoting that lifestyle, that healthy 00:10:42.06\00:10:44.30 lifestyle. SCOTT BOWES: Absolutely. 00:10:44.30\00:10:46.80 BILL: And I know that many of the places they go, the audience 00:10:46.80\00:10:49.33 is so impressed that these young people live a healthy lifestyle and promote good Christian 00:10:49.33\00:10:51.50 values. 00:10:51.50\00:10:54.16 As a proud father, I also have to say that when the Aerials 00:10:54.16\00:10:59.63 went to Andrews University and competed at what they call Acrofest and they did the 00:10:59.63\00:11:05.00 butterfly competition, which is where you stand there and somebody on your shoulders 00:11:05.00\00:11:09.56 and hold out two other participants out like this, my 00:11:09.56\00:11:15.00 son won. So it's a great thing. 00:11:15.00\00:11:20.20 I don't think maybe folks don't really understand the complexity 00:11:20.20\00:11:22.86 and the skill that's involved here. 00:11:22.86\00:11:26.26 It's like Cirque du Soleil. 00:11:26.26\00:11:28.43 It's really quite good. 00:11:28.43\00:11:30.70 I know you have another promotional little video that 00:11:30.70\00:11:34.10 shows the Aerials. 'cause I understand the choir has won 00:13:38.06\00:13:41.10 some prestigious awards recently. 00:13:41.10\00:13:43.46 SCOTT BOWES: Yeah, in the last few years, they've actually 00:13:43.46\00:13:46.73 placed 1st in the Durham Kiwanis Festival with a variety of other choirs in the area all 00:13:46.73\00:13:49.56 competing. 00:13:49.56\00:13:52.50 So that's been a very exciting thing on campus as well. 00:13:52.50\00:13:55.33 BILL: What are some of the other extracurricular activities that 00:13:55.33\00:13:57.00 students can participate in? 00:13:57.00\00:13:58.83 SCOTT BOWES: Absolutely. 00:13:58.83\00:14:01.33 We have a ski club where students get to go six different 00:14:01.33\00:14:04.50 times throughout the year to ski and snowboard at a local hill. 00:14:04.50\00:14:07.60 We have an outdoor club that does a backpacking, canoeing, 00:14:07.60\00:14:10.36 and winter camping trip each year. 00:14:10.36\00:14:13.13 We have a drama club for students who like to get 00:14:13.13\00:14:15.83 involved in that. We have a basketball team that participates in a local church 00:14:15.83\00:14:19.93 league here in Toronto. 00:14:19.93\00:14:22.23 As well, they travel to Andrews University in Michigan for a 00:14:22.23\00:14:24.60 tournament down there with other schools. 00:14:24.60\00:14:27.26 Many opportunities for the students as well in leadership. 00:14:27.26\00:14:30.26 We have a student association where students can get involved 00:14:30.26\00:14:33.26 in planning events and helping direct things that happen on the 00:14:33.26\00:14:38.10 campus, so a wonderful opportunity for them there as 00:14:38.10\00:14:40.86 well. BILL: So a very well-rounded curriculum, plenty 00:14:40.86\00:14:43.26 of activities, plenty of opportunities for the students 00:14:43.26\00:14:45.90 to participate in. SCOTT BOWES: Right. 00:14:45.90\00:14:48.06 BILL: Now, I said before we showed that little Aerials promo 00:14:48.06\00:14:55.50 that to me, and I know to you gentlemen 'cause I know both of 00:14:55.50\00:14:58.13 you, the most important aspect of the school is not what you are doing to develop these 00:14:58.13\00:15:03.70 young people academically; it's what is happening spiritually in 00:15:03.70\00:15:09.03 the lives of these young people. 00:15:09.03\00:15:11.30 So Pastor, talk to us a little bit about some of the things 00:15:11.30\00:15:14.66 you've seen in there. 00:15:14.66\00:15:16.20 I know you have a Bible study group. 00:15:16.20\00:15:19.23 Talk to us about that spiritual growth that you have been seeing 00:15:19.23\00:15:24.23 in the students there. 00:15:24.23\00:15:25.66 JARED BROWN: Absolutely. 00:15:25.66\00:15:26.83 It's been amazing. 00:15:26.83\00:15:29.13 We have. there's been very intentional in our spiritual 00:15:29.13\00:15:33.76 program. And what that means is that we've made our school calendar. we have a 00:15:33.76\00:15:37.70 spiritual calendar as well where we introduce kids to Christ and 00:15:37.70\00:15:42.70 then we try to disciple them through the Bible studies and prepare them for baptism. 00:15:42.70\00:15:46.30 And then we have a series of meetings at the end of the year 00:15:46.30\00:15:49.76 where we actually. we call it kind of reaping, like you would a harvest, and we try to 00:15:49.76\00:15:54.30 harvest as many young people as possible in order to prepare 00:15:54.30\00:15:57.13 them for baptism. 00:15:57.13\00:15:58.86 And this year again, we have many baptisms again. 00:15:58.86\00:16:00.60 So it's really exciting. 00:16:00.60\00:16:02.73 BILL: Now, these Bible studies, are they mandatory? 00:16:02.73\00:16:06.36 Do they have to attend? 00:16:06.36\00:16:07.86 JARED BROWN: Absolutely not. 00:16:07.86\00:16:09.80 In fact, they sign up voluntarily. 00:16:09.80\00:16:12.13 We have a spiritual week of emphasis, or what we call week 00:16:12.13\00:16:14.26 of prayer in October. 00:16:14.26\00:16:16.00 We have a guest speaker come in from somewhere. 00:16:16.00\00:16:18.20 This year it was Ricky Schwarz who came in and presented Christ 00:16:18.20\00:16:21.76 to the students through his own personal testimony. 00:16:21.76\00:16:23.96 And when he gave an appeal on the last Friday of our week of 00:16:23.96\00:16:27.50 prayer, 90 students came forward for Bible studies. 00:16:27.50\00:16:30.06 BILL: Wow. 00:16:30.06\00:16:31.16 Ninety? 00:16:31.16\00:16:32.46 JARED BROWN: Ninety, yeah. 00:16:32.46\00:16:34.20 And that's about half of our student population. 00:16:34.20\00:16:35.63 BILL: Isn't that incredible? 00:16:35.63\00:16:37.33 JARED BROWN: So we're amazed. 00:16:37.33\00:16:38.46 SCOTT BOWES: Isn't it? 00:16:38.46\00:16:40.50 BILL: That must make both of you feel very, very proud of that 00:16:40.50\00:16:42.66 work. JARED BROWN: Absolutely. 00:16:42.66\00:16:44.80 BILL: I know the impact it's had on my son. 00:16:44.80\00:16:46.46 I know the impact that you have had on my son. 00:16:46.46\00:16:49.23 And well, I'm getting choked up. 00:16:49.23\00:16:53.53 And I want to thank you for the care both of you gentlemen have 00:16:53.53\00:16:59.36 shown with my son, and the impact you've had. 00:16:59.36\00:17:02.53 You know, he's changed his whole eating habits. 00:17:02.53\00:17:06.06 You know, because of you, I'm no longer eating red meat in my 00:17:06.06\00:17:08.66 house or chicken. 00:17:08.66\00:17:09.96 Just tofu. 00:17:09.96\00:17:12.66 And it's great. 00:17:12.66\00:17:14.80 We feel great. 00:17:14.80\00:17:16.93 So tell me about how important this is for the school. 00:17:16.93\00:17:20.63 I mean, 'cause you can get the academics anywhere, right? 00:17:20.63\00:17:23.30 SCOTT BOWES: Absolutely. 00:17:23.30\00:17:25.20 BILL: I mean, anywhere, you can go for academics. 00:17:25.20\00:17:26.66 SCOTT BOWES: Absolutely. 00:17:26.66\00:17:28.63 BILL: But tell me about the importance of developing this 00:17:28.63\00:17:30.33 component of these young people. 00:17:30.33\00:17:31.73 SCOTT BOWES: Mmhmm. 00:17:31.73\00:17:33.86 We believe that. I mean, obviously we put great emphasis 00:17:33.86\00:17:37.96 on the academic program. 00:17:37.96\00:17:40.06 We wouldn't be a school if we didn't. 00:17:40.06\00:17:42.86 But we believe that the purpose for us being there is to help 00:17:42.86\00:17:47.80 students meet Christ. 00:17:47.80\00:17:49.96 Our mission statement is to reflect Jesus Christ and prepare 00:17:49.96\00:17:51.90 students for his service. 00:17:51.90\00:17:54.50 And that's what we're trying to be very intentional about doing. 00:17:54.50\00:17:57.73 So as Pastor Brown said, we've taken a lot of time to intentionally, through 00:17:57.73\00:18:01.93 our strategic planning, put specific things in place to 00:18:01.93\00:18:06.63 provide as many opportunities for these kids as possible. 00:18:06.63\00:18:09.60 And to see them choosing on their own to make these 00:18:09.60\00:18:14.63 decisions and get involved, you can feel the difference that it has made on the campus. 00:18:14.63\00:18:18.26 It's incredible. 00:18:18.26\00:18:19.66 It's incredible. 00:18:19.66\00:18:24.20 BILL: Now, one of the things I hear the young people say about 00:18:24.20\00:18:26.30 you, Pastor, is you don't shy away from any of the tough 00:18:26.30\00:18:27.53 issues. So they'll raise questions. 00:18:27.53\00:18:28.83 JARED BROWN: Absolutely. 00:18:28.83\00:18:30.63 BILL: And that can be a bit of a challenge sometimes. 00:18:30.63\00:18:32.43 JARED BROWN: It can be because you have to think on your feet. 00:18:32.43\00:18:34.60 And they ask you direct and honest questions, but the awesome thing about it 00:18:34.60\00:18:36.76 means they're thinking and they care, right, and they want to 00:18:36.76\00:18:41.53 make good choices. And it's so awesome when you see a society that seems to be spinning out 00:18:41.53\00:18:45.33 of control; you have young people, the future leaders of 00:18:45.33\00:18:48.00 our schools, our country, and they're asking important questions 'cause they want to do 00:18:48.00\00:18:51.76 what's right. 00:18:51.76\00:18:53.76 It's inspiring. 00:18:53.76\00:18:55.73 BILL: You know, we sometimes are very quick to point out what's 00:18:55.73\00:18:58.10 wrong with this new generation. 00:18:58.10\00:19:00.53 But I believe this is something that's very right. 00:19:00.53\00:19:03.10 JARED BROWN: Absolutely. 00:19:03.10\00:19:05.33 BILL: I know you have prepared a short video where some of the 00:19:05.33\00:19:11.06 young people talk firsthand about the impact that this has had on their lives. 00:19:11.06\00:19:13.46 I'd love to show that now to our viewers. 00:19:13.46\00:19:16.40 JARED BROWN: Absolutely. 00:19:16.40\00:19:16.93 NARRATOR: Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, 00:19:20.90\00:19:27.26 baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching 00:19:27.26\00:19:31.53 them to obey everything I have commanded you. 00:19:31.53\00:19:34.96 SCOTT BOWES: Hi. 00:19:35.93\00:19:39.36 I'm Scott Bowes, president of Kingsway College. 00:19:39.36\00:19:41.50 We take the gospel commission very seriously here at Kingsway, 00:19:41.50\00:19:43.90 and our desire is that every student here has the opportunity 00:19:43.90\00:19:46.83 to develop a close relationship with Jesus. 00:19:46.83\00:19:50.10 We started a new program here last year which sets aside 00:19:50.10\00:19:55.20 enough time in our schedule to allow every student the opportunity to participate in 00:19:55.20\00:19:58.76 Bible studies. 00:19:58.76\00:20:01.43 In the first year of this program, 30 students made the 00:20:01.43\00:20:04.53 decision to follow Christ and were baptized. 00:20:04.53\00:20:07.76 This year, we have 90 students participating in this program, 00:20:07.76\00:20:11.70 many of whom will be baptized soon. 00:20:11.70\00:20:15.33 This program has had such a positive impact in the lives of 00:20:15.33\00:20:19.90 our students, and I think that the best way for you to understand just how big of an 00:20:19.90\00:20:23.66 impact is to hear from our students directly. 00:20:23.66\00:20:25.60 MALE STUDENT: The Bible study here, it's optional, but still 00:20:28.53\00:20:31.23 every week, everyone shows up on time and [chuckle] sometimes we try to drag it out. 00:20:31.23\00:20:38.13 It's supposed to end at 6:30, but sometimes, you know, we'll 00:20:38.13\00:20:40.60 go a couple minutes later just 'cause we enjoy it. 00:20:40.60\00:20:43.03 It's not a burden. 00:20:43.03\00:20:45.40 FEMALE STUDENT: Joining the Bible study, it challenged my 00:20:45.40\00:20:47.36 faith. It challenged my knowledge in my religion. 00:20:47.36\00:20:49.90 It just really helps. 00:20:49.90\00:20:55.26 FEMALE STUDENT: I always looked at God in a different way, but 00:20:55.26\00:20:57.73 this year, it's changed my complete view upon him. 00:20:57.73\00:20:59.76 Like, I know that He's always there to catch me when I fall, 00:20:59.76\00:21:01.66 and that's the thing that has changed the most with me. 00:21:01.66\00:21:04.76 FEMALE STUDENT: The Bible studies plus my religion class, 00:21:04.76\00:21:07.73 I've learned so much more, you know, how to defend my faith, give reasons for my beliefs, 00:21:07.73\00:21:11.30 and yes, I feel more confident to share with people. 00:21:11.30\00:21:15.66 FEMALE STUDENT: My schedule is very busy, so being able to 00:21:15.66\00:21:17.63 study during school means I can actually get it done, while if I 00:21:17.63\00:21:19.46 was at another school, I probably wouldn't have the opportunity to go and have 00:21:19.46\00:21:21.33 someone teaching Bible studies. 00:21:21.33\00:21:24.96 NARRATOR: A Kingsway student's schedule can be demanding. 00:21:24.96\00:21:28.73 Along with the daily schoolwork, the work program, intramurals, 00:21:28.73\00:21:32.66 as well as touring group practices, this all adds up to a 00:21:32.66\00:21:36.10 full day. But by intentionally setting a specific time aside 00:21:36.10\00:21:41.00 for small group Bible studies, our students are able to benefit 00:21:41.00\00:21:44.43 spiritually. FEMALE STUDENT: Coming together in a small group and talking about God is 00:21:44.43\00:21:48.83 just really inspiring, instead of going through the motions of 00:21:48.83\00:21:53.63 church and stuff. 00:21:53.63\00:21:55.20 It's more personal. 00:21:55.20\00:21:58.06 MALE STUDENT: It's meant a great deal to me to be able to be 00:21:58.06\00:22:00.76 around people that live the same things I do and that have the same questions I do and 00:22:00.76\00:22:04.93 the same problems that I have, to be able to just talk about it 00:22:04.93\00:22:07.43 and figure things out as a group instead of alone. 00:22:07.43\00:22:10.40 MALE STUDENT: I've got a new perspective of the Bible and I 00:22:10.40\00:22:13.06 see a different view of God and who he really is and now I can 00:22:13.06\00:22:17.80 just share with my friends, tell them the wonderful news about 00:22:17.80\00:22:20.53 God. MALE STUDENT: It was a really spiritual experience. 00:22:20.53\00:22:24.13 It was really positive for me as well as other people in my Bible 00:22:24.13\00:22:26.30 study class. FEMALE STUDENT: It's very helpful because you have people going through the 00:22:26.30\00:22:27.80 same things you're going through. 00:22:27.80\00:22:33.06 And it's good to hear their side too and know that you're not 00:22:33.06\00:22:37.00 alone in your spiritual walk. 00:22:37.00\00:22:38.03 NARRATOR: In the Bible study program, emphasis is placed on 00:22:41.23\00:22:43.66 providing a solid, Biblical foundation and giving the students the skills necessary to 00:22:43.66\00:22:46.90 continue to grow and study on their own. 00:22:46.90\00:22:49.66 FEMALE STUDENT: Last year, I'd already been taking Bible studies with Pastor 00:22:52.43\00:22:54.20 Brown and I had been baptized at graduation. 00:22:54.20\00:22:56.73 So this year, just to continue growing in my walk with God, I 00:22:56.73\00:22:59.60 decided to take Bible studies again. 00:22:59.60\00:23:02.53 MALE STUDENT: Growing up in the church and as a Christian, I 00:23:02.53\00:23:05.13 focussed more on my personal relationship with God through 00:23:05.13\00:23:10.10 prayer, but I didn't know that the Bible was also crucial in our own relationships and how 00:23:10.10\00:23:14.33 we can use the Bible to read what God has to say to us. 00:23:14.33\00:23:17.76 In the Bible studies class, we're learning a lot about how 00:23:17.76\00:23:19.53 to use the Bible. 00:23:19.53\00:23:21.90 FEMALE STUDENT: We ask the questions, and it's like, "Well, 00:23:21.90\00:23:24.26 let's look in this verse and see what it says that can explain 00:23:24.26\00:23:26.33 your question. " So it's not just him answering us; he's using the Word to answer us. 00:23:26.33\00:23:29.26 FEMALE STUDENT: We'll ask a question, and we're like, "Give 00:23:29.26\00:23:32.56 us the answer," and he won't give us the answer. 00:23:32.56\00:23:34.16 He'll be like, "What do you think? 00:23:34.16\00:23:35.33 Look in this verse. 00:23:35.33\00:23:37.10 " And we're like, "Why can't you just tell us? 00:23:37.10\00:23:39.36 " And he's like, "No, 'cause you won't always have me to tell 00:23:39.36\00:23:41.83 you, so I want to teach you to how to find it yourself so later on in life, you can 00:23:41.83\00:23:44.30 find it too. 00:23:44.30\00:23:46.63 " FEMALE STUDENT: Once you actually look it up for yourself, it's kind of 00:23:46.63\00:23:48.36 like you're discovering it again. 00:23:48.36\00:23:50.70 MALE STUDENT: I'm able to do my own little Bible study and I'm 00:23:50.70\00:23:53.40 able to study the Bible on my own with God's guidance as well. 00:23:53.40\00:23:54.90 It's really amazing. 00:23:54.90\00:23:57.30 FEMALE STUDENT: I certainly think that now I can go study 00:23:57.30\00:24:02.50 the Bible on my own because I've learned skills through Bible study and now I can 00:24:02.50\00:24:05.40 learn more and then I like to tell people what I've learned. 00:24:05.40\00:24:08.63 JARED BROWN: Hi. 00:24:10.16\00:24:12.43 I'm Jared Brown, the campus chaplain at Kingsway College. 00:24:12.43\00:24:14.80 Leading out in Bible studies here has been incredibly 00:24:14.80\00:24:17.53 rewarding.
