>>Bill: John Robert Wooden was an American basketball 00:00:02.00\00:00:03.10 player and coach. 00:00:03.10\00:00:05.43 Nicknamed the "Wizard of Westwood , he won ten NCAA 00:00:05.43\00:00:06.46 national championships in a 12-year period - seven 00:00:06.46\00:00:11.96 in a row - as head coach at UCLA. Within this 00:00:11.96\00:00:18.40 period, his teams won a record 88 consecutive 00:00:18.40\00:00:19.40 games. He was named national coach of 00:00:19.40\00:00:24.40 the year six times. In his book "Wooden" he tells the 00:00:24.40\00:00:29.46 following story: 00:00:29.46\00:00:31.76 >>ANNOUNCER: IT HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME... 00:01:35.83\00:01:38.23 GOD'S BOOK, THE BIBLE. 00:01:38.50\00:01:41.63 STILL RELEVANT IN TODAY'S COMPLEX WORLD. 00:01:41.90\00:01:46.16 IT IS WRITTEN . . . 00:01:46.43\00:01:48.76 SHARING MESSAGES OF HOPE AROUND THE WORLD. 00:01:49.10\00:01:52.96 I can assure you what is true of a mule, is true 00:02:10.16\00:02:11.20 with people. Paul says the fruit of the Spirit 00:02:11.20\00:02:16.26 is "gentleness." It is a word that is more commonly 00:02:16.26\00:02:21.76 translated "meekness." It is the same word that is 00:02:21.76\00:02:22.76 used in Matthew, chapter five, where Jesus said, 00:02:22.76\00:02:28.43 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the 00:02:28.43\00:02:32.36 earth." Incidentally, it's too bad that the meek have 00:02:32.36\00:02:33.46 not already inherited the earth, because the un-meek 00:02:33.46\00:02:38.86 are making a real mess of it. Someone has pointed 00:02:38.86\00:02:45.03 out that courage is not in Paul's list of the fruit 00:02:45.03\00:02:46.20 of the Spirit. But we should recognize that it 00:02:46.20\00:02:50.10 takes courage to be gentle in the midst of all the 00:02:50.10\00:02:55.46 evil surrounding us in this world. 00:02:55.46\00:03:01.93 We have begun a journey through the Fruit of the 00:03:04.10\00:03:05.10 Spirit outlining Galatians chapter five and today we 00:03:05.10\00:03:10.96 are continuing our study with Gentleness. And 00:03:10.96\00:03:16.10 joining me are my two guests, Gerard Oudri and 00:03:16.10\00:03:17.06 Mark Johnson. Welcome, both of you, to the It Is 00:03:17.06\00:03:23.56 Written program. >>Pastor Mark: Thank you. >>Bill: 00:03:23.56\00:03:27.26 And let me welcome our viewers to that faithfully 00:03:27.26\00:03:28.30 tune in every single week. 00:03:28.30\00:03:32.80 Well, we have embarked on a journey a few weeks back 00:03:32.80\00:03:33.86 where we have been looking at what Paul says are 00:03:33.86\00:03:39.46 the external, if we would, manifestations of what the 00:03:39.46\00:03:45.00 Spirit has done in the heart of the followers 00:03:45.00\00:03:45.96 of Jesus Christ. And he contrasted the Fruit of 00:03:45.96\00:03:50.83 the Spirit with the deeds of the flesh. And we 00:03:50.83\00:03:55.16 thought this was an interesting study for our 00:03:55.16\00:03:56.13 folks and you graciously agreed to join us. Now, 00:03:56.13\00:04:01.70 both of you are pastors Pastor Oudri, you pastor 00:04:01.70\00:04:07.70 the Bronte Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Tell us 00:04:07.70\00:04:08.70 a little bit about your church and maybe there's a 00:04:08.70\00:04:11.40 website folks can.>>Pastor Oudri: Aolutely. Well, 00:04:11.40\00:04:15.86 thank you so much for having me again in your 00:04:15.86\00:04:16.86 program. We've been at the Bronte Church, Bronte 00:04:16.86\00:04:20.86 Seventh-Day Adventist Church since September of 00:04:20.86\00:04:23.36 2010 and enjoying the journey there. We have 00:04:23.36\00:04:24.33 a great group of people. 00:04:24.33\00:04:30.43 It's a very friendly church located between 00:04:30.43\00:04:31.36 Oakville and Burlington. 00:04:31.36\00:04:34.70 And we do have a website, Brontesda.org and we 00:04:34.70\00:04:35.66 invite viewers to visit our website. >>Bill: Thank 00:04:35.66\00:04:39.76 you Pastor Oudri. And Pastor Mark Johnson it is 00:04:39.76\00:04:44.36 a real thrill to have you here and we're happy 00:04:44.36\00:04:45.33 that you accepted our invitation. >>Pastor Mark: 00:04:45.33\00:04:48.03 I'm delighted. Pastor Mark Johnson is the President 00:04:48.03\00:04:50.23 of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in 00:04:50.23\00:04:51.10 Canada. Pastor Mark, tell us a little bit about 00:04:51.10\00:04:54.33 you. >>Pastor Mark: Well, I have had the joy and 00:04:54.33\00:04:59.50 privilege of working as a Seventh-Day Adventist 00:04:59.50\00:05:00.60 minister across Canada in every administrative unit 00:05:00.60\00:05:04.03 basically from Ontario going west to British 00:05:04.03\00:05:10.36 Columbia and now it's my joy to be able to travel, 00:05:10.36\00:05:11.36 really, across this vast nation of ours and see how 00:05:11.36\00:05:16.76 God has been leading in the lives of individuals 00:05:16.76\00:05:20.20 all over the place. And truly that is a wonderful 00:05:20.20\00:05:21.23 opportunity and God is doing great things 00:05:21.23\00:05:27.66 for people, just in people's lives, everyday 00:05:27.66\00:05:31.53 experiences and so on. My wife doesn't get to travel 00:05:31.53\00:05:32.73 with me quite so much now a days but we keep in 00:05:32.73\00:05:36.03 touch through the miracle of Skype and things like 00:05:36.03\00:05:39.26 that. >>Bill: (laughter) Well, that's wonderful. 00:05:39.26\00:05:40.26 Well, let's get down into our study of gentleness 00:05:40.26\00:05:43.46 or, commonly translated, meekness, right? So much 00:05:43.46\00:05:49.20 for that assertiveness training I just signed up 00:05:49.20\00:05:50.33 for. (laughter) When it says here it's the meek, 00:05:50.33\00:05:53.76 it's gentle. So, let's talk about this. What 00:05:53.76\00:06:03.66 could you gentlemen tell me about this, about this 00:06:03.66\00:06:04.66 gentleness that Paul talks about? How does this play 00:06:04.66\00:06:06.10 itself out? Why is it important? Or what is it? 00:06:06.10\00:06:09.83 >>Pastor Oudri: I think that, first before we even 00:06:09.83\00:06:10.90 go into, specifically, gentleness there was 00:06:10.90\00:06:13.73 something that when I was reading this text that 00:06:13.73\00:06:16.80 'gently' was two things, the scope and the source 00:06:16.80\00:06:17.76 of these attributes. The scope, by that I mean I 00:06:17.76\00:06:27.96 think that everybody would like to enjoy these things 00:06:27.96\00:06:29.90 and so no matter what your faith is or even if you 00:06:29.90\00:06:30.96 don't have any faith in anything. But I think the 00:06:30.96\00:06:36.46 difference is the source and Paul clearly says that 00:06:36.46\00:06:41.60 these are Fruits of the Spirit. So if I want to 00:06:41.60\00:06:42.63 experience these things in my life it's only through 00:06:42.63\00:06:48.00 the Spirit. And so the meekness, the gentleness 00:06:48.00\00:06:51.73 that we are called to experience, it's only 00:06:51.73\00:06:52.70 a Fruit that comes as a result of the Spirit of 00:06:52.70\00:06:57.83 God being in us. >>Bill: So not a man-made. I can't 00:06:57.83\00:07:02.63 stand there and say, okay, from this day forward now 00:07:02.63\00:07:03.70 I'm gentle. Pastor Oudri: Precisely. >>Bill: Yeah. 00:07:03.70\00:07:07.13 It is in what the Holy Spirit has done on the 00:07:07.13\00:07:10.30 inside. >>Pastor Mark: Well I think I've seen 00:07:10.30\00:07:11.26 somebody try that once or twice. >>Pastor Oudri: 00:07:11.26\00:07:13.06 (laughter) >>Bill: How successful was that? 00:07:13.06\00:07:14.50 >>Pastor Mark: Usually just for a few minutes 00:07:14.50\00:07:15.46 >>Bill: That's right. Now, what is this meekness? 00:07:15.46\00:07:17.60 What is that? I mean, because to be honest the 00:07:17.60\00:07:22.36 world would say the exact opposite. I mean that 00:07:22.36\00:07:23.36 Jesus said, "Blessed are the meek", the world would 00:07:23.36\00:07:29.06 say, 'No, blessed are those, the go-getters. The 00:07:29.06\00:07:33.53 ones that are aggressive. 00:07:33.53\00:07:34.06 There's something out there, you go get it. You 00:07:34.06\00:07:37.63 don't wait for anybody else to give it to you' 00:07:37.63\00:07:38.63 Right? But yet, Paul is saying, when the Holy 00:07:38.63\00:07:41.56 Spirit is inside you're going to present meekness 00:07:41.56\00:07:45.43 or gentleness. Doesn't sound like a winning 00:07:45.43\00:07:46.36 characteristic according to the standards of 00:07:46.36\00:07:49.93 the world. >>Pastor Mark: Yeah, I think, Bill, that 00:07:49.93\00:07:53.16 one of the big things is that the enduring 00:07:53.16\00:07:54.10 qualities of people that we know. I think we revere 00:07:54.10\00:07:59.06 people who we see have, really, kind of, their act 00:07:59.06\00:08:05.73 together, in a sense. 00:08:05.73\00:08:06.23 I suppose we would call it that one of the people who 00:08:06.23\00:08:10.26 had a tremendous impact on me as a young adult was a 00:08:10.26\00:08:11.33 woman that I met over the Philippians many years 00:08:11.33\00:08:14.33 ago. And she was just one of the kindest, most 00:08:14.33\00:08:19.83 gentle individuals that I had ever met. Tremendous 00:08:19.83\00:08:20.83 care for people around her. And I think that 00:08:20.83\00:08:26.30 sometimes when we think in terms of gentleness it's 00:08:26.30\00:08:31.00 the antithesis, if you please, of the aggressive 00:08:31.00\00:08:32.00 approach people take in trying to get themselves 00:08:32.00\00:08:36.96 ahead and begins to think about the other person. I 00:08:36.96\00:08:40.20 find that interesting because Christ puts me in 00:08:40.20\00:08:41.20 a position where I think about others and how my 00:08:41.20\00:08:46.43 life impacts on the other person before I spend 00:08:46.43\00:08:48.90 time, I think, thinking about myself. >>Bill: And 00:08:48.90\00:08:49.93 in that service to others you, in fact, become 00:08:49.93\00:08:54.73 elevated. >>Pastor Mark: That's true. Yes. >>Pastor 00:08:54.73\00:08:58.26 Oudri: I think, also, that Paul is not talking about 00:08:58.26\00:08:59.33 false humility. And, by the way, I'm using the 00:08:59.33\00:09:03.93 word 'humility' I think that it is.>>Bill: It's 00:09:03.93\00:09:08.30 probably synonymous also. 00:09:08.30\00:09:08.83 Yeah. >>Pastor Oudri: Yes. 00:09:08.83\00:09:09.36 Related, closely related. 00:09:09.36\00:09:11.30 I think it was the great philosopher, Aristotle 00:09:11.30\00:09:12.26 that used, defined meekness or humility 00:09:12.26\00:09:17.30 between two extremes Anger and indifference. In 00:09:17.30\00:09:26.80 other words, you have power, if you may, to act 00:09:26.80\00:09:27.80 but you choose to be in between, to wait, to 00:09:27.80\00:09:33.26 be patient. And I found a verse in Psalms, Psalm 45, 00:09:33.26\00:09:41.30 verses 3 and 4, talking about God and talking 00:09:41.30\00:09:42.30 about how God is patient or humble. And we all 00:09:42.30\00:09:45.76 believe that He is all powerful.>>Bill: 00:09:45.76\00:09:50.86 Absolutely. >>Pastor Oudri:.and He chooses to 00:09:50.86\00:09:51.80 be humble. But look at the context here, Psalm 45, 00:09:51.80\00:09:56.56 verses 3 and 4, it says, 00:09:56.56\00:09:58.36 So you see the context of glory and majesty and, 00:10:16.80\00:10:17.80 almost like, war and power but in humility. What 00:10:17.80\00:10:21.73 a contrast. >>Bill: So, the gentleness and the 00:10:21.73\00:10:28.30 meekness is not contrary to power, right? So, we're 00:10:28.30\00:10:29.33 not surrendering power, right? By being meek and 00:10:29.33\00:10:34.30 by being gentle. Go ahead. 00:10:34.30\00:10:34.83 >>Pastor Mark: Well, the thing, and you know, that 00:10:34.83\00:10:42.53 made me think about this passage earlier in the 00:10:42.53\00:10:44.66 fifth chapter of Galatians, there's also a 00:10:44.66\00:10:45.53 list that, I think, we're all familiar with which 00:10:45.53\00:10:49.60 are the results of living a natural life, the works 00:10:49.60\00:10:54.60 of the flesh as the Old King James would call it 00:10:54.60\00:10:55.60 And as I look through that list in verses 00:10:55.60\00:11:00.16 19 and on, it talks about characteristics which are 00:11:00.16\00:11:04.83 totally in opposition to the characteristics of 00:11:04.83\00:11:05.83 the Spirit-led individual. 00:11:05.83\00:11:09.16 >>Bill: Right. >>Pastor Mark: And I read things 00:11:09.16\00:11:10.20 like, you know, it talks about idolatry and 00:11:10.20\00:11:12.20 witchcraft and we, kind of, pass over that but 00:11:12.20\00:11:14.20 when we think in terms of things like wrath or 00:11:14.20\00:11:15.20 strife and all of these kinds of things you can't 00:11:15.20\00:11:20.10 be gentle and be engaged in these, kind of, angry 00:11:20.10\00:11:25.23 situations that are described in that earlier 00:11:25.23\00:11:26.20 text. And so the beautiful thing that I find about 00:11:26.20\00:11:33.30 the way that the Spirit works is, it takes 00:11:33.30\00:11:36.30 something which is destructive to 00:11:36.30\00:11:37.06 relationships, destructive of forward-thinking in 00:11:37.06\00:11:40.86 many things and replaces that with something which 00:11:40.86\00:11:45.10 is so uncharacteristic of individuals. As a little 00:11:45.10\00:11:46.10 boy my grandfather was one of the gentlest people 00:11:46.10\00:11:52.60 that I have ever met. My mother, who grew up in 00:11:52.60\00:11:57.86 that home, told me and other people who knew my 00:11:57.86\00:11:58.96 grandfather that before he met Christ and became a 00:11:58.96\00:12:01.56 Christian individual, that he was an individual who 00:12:01.56\00:12:06.43 really was, you know, full of profanity, full of 00:12:06.43\00:12:07.56 stuff, hard to get along with. But he became 00:12:07.56\00:12:14.50 changed because Christ came in and gave him a new 00:12:14.50\00:12:18.26 heart, a new way of looking at stuff. And 00:12:18.26\00:12:19.20 to me, that's exciting. 00:12:19.20\00:12:22.80 >>Bill: Absolutely. 00:12:22.80\00:12:23.26 >>Pastor Mark: Because this is almost a miracle 00:12:23.26\00:12:25.93 text, in the sense. 00:12:25.93\00:12:26.40 I couldn't pull it off >>Bill: Yes. Absolutely. 00:12:26.40\00:12:29.23 >>Pastor Mark:.but Jesus can. >>Bill: Now, you 00:12:29.23\00:12:30.20 know, but the world will say - I mean we have 00:12:30.20\00:12:33.30 viewers right now saying but, yeah, there you 00:12:33.30\00:12:35.40 Christians go again. 00:12:35.40\00:12:35.86 You know, you're becoming doormats. You know, you're 00:12:35.86\00:12:39.70 just going to let - is that, that's not what it's 00:12:39.70\00:12:40.73 saying? That's not, that's not what this refers to. 00:12:40.73\00:12:43.90 It's not being a doormat. 00:12:43.90\00:12:44.40 It's not letting people take advantage of 00:12:44.40\00:12:47.86 you. What's, where's that difference occur? >>Pastor 00:12:47.86\00:12:51.90 Oudri: I was just thinking about a story that I heard 00:12:51.90\00:12:53.00 about George Washington and how one day there 00:12:53.00\00:12:56.00 were three soldiers and a corporal. And the corporal 00:12:56.00\00:13:03.33 was giving orders and they were supposed to lift 00:13:03.33\00:13:04.36 a tree or something and he was just giving orders, 00:13:04.36\00:13:06.40 'Come on you soldiers 1-2-3 do it'. But he was 00:13:06.40\00:13:09.96 not helping at all. And this man came and says, 00:13:09.96\00:13:11.00 'Why aren't you helping?' And he said, 'well, I'm a 00:13:11.00\00:13:15.63 corporal' and so he didn't say anything and he went 00:13:15.63\00:13:19.36 and helped and he happened to be George Washington. 00:13:19.36\00:13:20.40 I don't think that he was being a doormat by doing 00:13:20.40\00:13:24.16 that. It's simply the humility, the gentleness 00:13:24.16\00:13:30.40 that even though I'm in a high position but I'm 00:13:30.40\00:13:31.53 imitating Christ. And, like him, He chose to 00:13:31.53\00:13:36.56 leave Heaven behind and become one of us and 00:13:36.56\00:13:42.20 become a servant. And that was Christ. >>Bill: Now, 00:13:42.20\00:13:43.33 when I go to the bank and that bank teller makes a 00:13:43.33\00:13:48.43 mistake on my deposit or, boy, I'll tell you it's 00:13:48.43\00:13:53.36 hard to be gentle. 00:13:53.36\00:13:53.80 >>Pastor Mark: It doesn't come naturally. >>Bill: It 00:13:53.80\00:13:58.66 doesn't come naturally. 00:13:58.66\00:13:59.20 So, for a viewer that's watching saying, oh, okay, 00:13:59.20\00:14:01.10 I want to exhibit this in my life. I mean, I think 00:14:01.10\00:14:02.10 folks, intellectually, understand that 00:14:02.10\00:14:06.56 gentleness, you know, meekness, humility, that 00:14:06.56\00:14:12.03 helps in relationships. 00:14:12.03\00:14:12.56 That makes for a stronger marriage, it makes for a 00:14:12.56\00:14:17.06 better parent-child relationship.>>Pastor 00:14:17.06\00:14:18.00 Mark: Sure. >>Bill:.it makes for a better working 00:14:18.00\00:14:22.20 relationship. Yeah, I think, intellectually, I 00:14:22.20\00:14:23.56 mean we can grasp that. 00:14:23.56\00:14:24.10 The issue is okay, how does that happen? Paul 00:14:24.10\00:14:27.50 says, okay, it's the Fruit of the Spirit. 00:14:27.50\00:14:28.40 We've talked about your grandfather going 00:14:28.40\00:14:30.83 through.so I've got a viewer sitting here going 00:14:30.83\00:14:34.53 I need that in my life. 00:14:34.53\00:14:35.06 What do they do? >>Pastor Mark: I think the good 00:14:35.06\00:14:38.23 news is that the way that I understand the Spirit 00:14:38.23\00:14:39.40 working is that God takes us where we are. And 00:14:39.40\00:14:46.66 we are not where God would like us to end up and yet, 00:14:46.66\00:14:53.73 He's okay with that. And He begins to work within 00:14:53.73\00:14:54.70 us to help us become sensitive to the parts 00:14:54.70\00:14:58.60 that are not there that He's talking about. As I 00:14:58.60\00:15:02.73 find myself spending more time in the word of God 00:15:02.73\00:15:03.90 and reading what it has to say, it paints a picture 00:15:03.90\00:15:12.40 of Christ which is a realistic picture of a 00:15:12.40\00:15:16.70 person who had flesh and blood. Who had the 00:15:16.70\00:15:17.63 capacity to live life in a contentious society 00:15:17.63\00:15:22.83 and yet was able to say hard things to people 00:15:22.83\00:15:27.83 sometimes.>>Bill: Right. 00:15:27.83\00:15:28.33 >>Pastor Mark:.in a nice way. >>Bill: Right. 00:15:28.33\00:15:31.00 >>Pastor Mark: And that, I think, is the part that's 00:15:31.00\00:15:32.06 terribly hard because we come out of church or 00:15:32.06\00:15:34.63 wherever we happen to be and the question is, now 00:15:34.63\00:15:37.16 that I'm out of this particular sacred 00:15:37.16\00:15:38.00 environment, how am I supposed to live between 00:15:38.00\00:15:41.80 the weekends in a way that looks anything like what 00:15:41.80\00:15:44.63 God wants me to do? 00:15:44.63\00:15:45.10 >>Bill: Yes. >>Pastor Oudri: I love gardening. 00:15:45.10\00:15:49.13 When spring and summer come I really enjoy 00:15:49.13\00:15:50.06 gardening and there is a key word here, the 00:15:50.06\00:15:54.63 Fruit of the Spirit. And, obviously, you cannot have 00:15:54.63\00:15:58.66 fruit unless you plant a seed. And you have to 00:15:58.66\00:15:59.66 take care of the plant otherwise you're not going 00:15:59.66\00:16:04.76 to have any fruit. And I was thinking of the story 00:16:04.76\00:16:09.00 of Nicodemus that came to Jesus at night. And he 00:16:09.00\00:16:10.00 was a pharosy and poorly admired and respected by 00:16:10.00\00:16:13.23 the people around him but something was missing in 00:16:13.23\00:16:19.26 his life. So, even religious leaders 00:16:19.26\00:16:20.10 sometimes very often miss the mark. I am a pastor 00:16:20.10\00:16:24.80 and I can speak about that. And so, basically, 00:16:24.80\00:16:29.10 Jesus says you need to be born again. Be born of the 00:16:29.10\00:16:30.16 water and of the Spirit or of water and of the 00:16:30.16\00:16:35.56 Spirit. So, I see that as planting a seed. And that 00:16:35.56\00:16:40.33 is about our relationship with Christ. That's the 00:16:40.33\00:16:41.36 only way that that can happen and we have to 00:16:41.36\00:16:45.76 maintain that. If we want that Fruit and we want all 00:16:45.76\00:16:48.70 of these attributes and now we're talking about 00:16:48.70\00:16:49.73 gentleness, meekness, humility. But it is 00:16:49.73\00:16:53.93 not only hard, it is impossible for us to 00:16:53.93\00:16:58.53 experience, humanly speaking, then we need to 00:16:58.53\00:16:59.50 plant the seed and take care of the plant 00:16:59.50\00:17:03.16 and take care of the that relationship with Christ. 00:17:03.16\00:17:06.86 >>Bill: Yeah. Leading up to this chapter five here 00:17:06.86\00:17:07.86 in Galatians, Paul has been going through 00:17:07.86\00:17:12.60 some pretty difficult situations. >>Pastor Mark: 00:17:12.60\00:17:17.06 Sure. >>Bill:.here. 00:17:17.06\00:17:17.53 >>Pastor Mark: Absolutely, absolutely. >>Bill: And 00:17:17.53\00:17:19.00 has had to be rather forceful, you know, 00:17:19.00\00:17:19.90 sometimes, you know, how he presented his message. 00:17:19.90\00:17:24.96 This humility, this recognizing that, you 00:17:24.96\00:17:29.26 know, we are children of God, we are servants of 00:17:29.26\00:17:30.26 God. We have, sometimes, the inability to place 00:17:30.26\00:17:35.30 ourselves in second place, right? And consider others 00:17:35.30\00:17:40.56 and recognize, recognize that. >>Pastor Mark: Sure. 00:17:40.56\00:17:41.60 One of the key issues, I think, in 00:17:41.60\00:17:46.23 the New Testament is this discussion of how my life 00:17:46.23\00:17:49.53 affects the life of other people. In fact, I think 00:17:49.53\00:17:50.53 about the passage that says, "Don't let 00:17:50.53\00:17:53.63 your liberty become the stumping block for someone 00:17:53.63\00:17:56.33 else". And as I think about the role of a 00:17:56.33\00:17:57.26 Christian in society, whether he's surrounded 00:17:57.26\00:18:04.83 by other Christians or whether he is living in a 00:18:04.83\00:18:07.23 world where Christianity is not a dominant force is 00:18:07.23\00:18:08.26 question is, how do I live in the knowledge that 00:18:08.26\00:18:16.43 there is a God who is interested.>>Bill: Yes. 00:18:16.43\00:18:22.16 >>Pastor Mark:.in everything I do? >>Bill: 00:18:22.16\00:18:23.03 Right. >>Pastor Mark: And is very interested in the 00:18:23.03\00:18:24.90 way that I relate to other people. Even when I am in 00:18:24.90\00:18:30.53 disagreement with individuals have I learned 00:18:30.53\00:18:31.46 how to disagree in a kind way? Because I discovered 00:18:31.46\00:18:36.33 when people get angry with me I don't take them that 00:18:36.33\00:18:41.80 seriously. When individuals are nice and, 00:18:41.80\00:18:42.70 yet, firm in what they have to say about things 00:18:42.70\00:18:47.73 when they have an issue, I pay more attention to 00:18:47.73\00:18:52.26 that. And I think that that's something that is a 00:18:52.26\00:18:53.30 part of how we are wired. 00:18:53.30\00:18:56.86 And God knows that. 00:18:56.86\00:18:57.33 And God wants us to demonstrate in real time 00:18:57.33\00:19:02.86 what it would be like to be around an individual 00:19:02.86\00:19:04.00 who maybe, in some little way, reflects 00:19:04.00\00:19:09.03 the character of Christ >>Bill: Now, what would 00:19:09.03\00:19:12.36 our society or communities be like if all of those 00:19:12.36\00:19:13.43 that claim to be followers of Jesus Christ exhibited 00:19:13.43\00:19:18.80 gentleness, meekness, and humility in their daily 00:19:18.80\00:19:23.90 lives? >>Pastor Oudri: Imagine that. And it 00:19:23.90\00:19:24.83 interesting, you were talking about Paul, that 00:19:24.83\00:19:30.40 even when dealing with other Christians he was 00:19:30.40\00:19:33.90 not talking, he had many conflicts with people 00:19:33.90\00:19:35.00 from outside.>>Bill: Yes. 00:19:35.00\00:19:36.30 >>Pastor Oudri:.of the Christian church but also 00:19:36.30\00:19:37.30 from inside. >>Bill: Yes. 00:19:37.30\00:19:39.73 Absolutely. >>Pastor Oudri: But even with them, 00:19:39.73\00:19:40.73 in Corinthians and even in Ephesians, he says, 00:19:40.73\00:19:42.26 you know, 'I come with gentleness and with 00:19:42.26\00:19:45.63 humility and that. 00:19:45.63\00:19:46.06 So, that's a challenge for all of us to follow in his 00:19:46.06\00:19:52.03 steps. >>Bill: Gentlemen, we've run out of time. I 00:19:52.03\00:19:53.13 appreciate your insights. 00:19:53.13\00:19:58.86 Henry Moorhead was an evangelist who lived over 00:19:59.50\00:20:00.50 a hundred years ago. He was a contemporary of 00:20:00.50\00:20:04.56 Dwight L. Moody. He became famous not so much for his 00:20:04.56\00:20:06.93 sermons, but for his text because the only text 00:20:06.93\00:20:07.93 usually he would ever preach on was John 00:20:07.93\00:20:13.20 3:16. Henry Moorhead was preaching in a Welsh 00:20:13.20\00:20:18.53 mining town among some of the roughest, toughest, 00:20:18.53\00:20:19.66 meanest men in all of Wales. God was moving in 00:20:19.66\00:20:22.96 a mighty way. There was a man named Ike Miller who 00:20:22.96\00:20:26.83 lived in that town. Ike Miller was a drunkard, a 00:20:26.83\00:20:27.83 blasphemer, a brawler, and a bully. He was the 00:20:27.83\00:20:31.70 toughest of the tough; the meanest of the mean, and, 00:20:31.70\00:20:35.70 in a town that feared no one, everyone feared Ike 00:20:35.70\00:20:36.66 Miller. Ike Miller hated preachers, and he hated 00:20:36.66\00:20:40.96 church more than he hated anything else. When he got 00:20:40.96\00:20:46.33 wind of the revival that was going on in the little 00:20:46.33\00:20:47.50 tabernacle at the end of town, he sent word to 00:20:47.50\00:20:50.53 Henry Moorhead that if he preached that night, he 00:20:50.53\00:20:53.53 was personally going to come to the church and 00:20:53.53\00:20:54.50 pistol whip him, and then run him out of town. Now 00:20:54.50\00:20:58.33 Ike Miller was not a man of talk, he was a man of 00:20:58.33\00:21:03.13 action, and if he said it he meant it. Some of 00:21:03.13\00:21:04.13 the Christian men went to Henry Moorhead out 00:21:04.13\00:21:09.03 of love and concern, and tried to dissuade him from 00:21:09.03\00:21:13.70 preaching that night. They begged him to simply call 00:21:13.70\00:21:14.76 the meeting off. But Henry Moorhead refused and said, 00:21:14.76\00:21:18.20 "I am going to preach the gospel and trust God." 00:21:18.20\00:21:22.63 Well, that night the little tabernacle was 00:21:22.63\00:21:23.50 packed. Miller was nowhere to be seen and the crowd 00:21:23.50\00:21:28.13 was kind of relieved, but as Moorhead got up to 00:21:28.13\00:21:32.23 preach, the door burst open, and big burley Ike 00:21:32.23\00:21:33.20 Miller came walking in. He sat down with his arms 00:21:33.20\00:21:38.10 folded, glaring at the preacher with a killer 00:21:38.10\00:21:41.60 look that said, "You say one word, and I'm going to 00:21:41.60\00:21:42.63 beat you within an inch of your life." Henry 00:21:42.63\00:21:47.06 Moorhead, unruffled, simply began by reading 00:21:47.06\00:21:52.16 John 3:16. Then he began to preach on the love of 00:21:52.16\00:21:53.26 God, the life of Jesus, the joy of eternal 00:21:53.26\00:21:57.70 life. When he finished, Ike Miller hit his feet. 00:21:57.70\00:22:03.66 Everyone just stared in awe and fear, wondering if 00:22:03.66\00:22:04.73 he was going to carry out his threat. But instead, 00:22:04.73\00:22:08.66 he simply walked out of the building. As Ike 00:22:08.66\00:22:12.53 walked back toward his home, some of his old 00:22:12.53\00:22:13.50 friends called out from the bar to join them for 00:22:13.50\00:22:16.43 a drink. But to their surprise, this time Ike 00:22:16.43\00:22:20.90 did not join them; he just kept right on walking. He 00:22:20.90\00:22:21.96 walked down a little dirt road; came to a little one 00:22:21.96\00:22:26.56 room cottage surrounded by a little rickety fence. He 00:22:26.56\00:22:29.90 walked through that fence door and then opened 00:22:29.90\00:22:30.86 the door to his house and stepped in. There he 00:22:30.86\00:22:33.46 met his frail wife and two children. Those two 00:22:33.46\00:22:37.66 children ran like frightened mice and hid 00:22:37.66\00:22:38.56 under the bed. His little wife cowered down waiting 00:22:38.56\00:22:41.50 for another beating from a drunken profane husband. 00:22:41.50\00:22:46.73 But there was to be no beating this time. Ike 00:22:46.73\00:22:47.70 Miller looked at his wife and said, "Woman, you have 00:22:47.70\00:22:51.43 nothing to fear. Get the kids and bring them here. 00:22:51.43\00:22:56.40 We are going to pray." She said, "What did you say?" 00:22:56.40\00:22:57.46 He said, "Bring the kids here right now, we're 00:22:57.46\00:23:01.86 going to pray." Well, she went, got the kids out 00:23:01.86\00:23:06.23 from under the bed; they came in there trembling, 00:23:06.23\00:23:07.20 hiding behind her skirt. 00:23:07.20\00:23:11.46 He looked at those kids and barked, "Kneel down." 00:23:11.46\00:23:12.50 They knelt. He looked at his wife and said, "You 00:23:12.50\00:23:17.76 too!" She knelt. Then for the first time in their 00:23:17.76\00:23:23.03 life, they saw their daddy do something they thought 00:23:23.03\00:23:24.10 they would ever see him do. He knelt down. 00:23:24.10\00:23:27.23 He tried to pray. He said, "Oh God..." and then there 00:23:27.23\00:23:33.93 was dead silence. Because Ike Miller didn't know how 00:23:33.93\00:23:35.00 to pray. He didn't know what to say. He knew how 00:23:35.00\00:23:40.56 to curse; he knew how to yell and scream, but he 00:23:40.56\00:23:44.43 didn't know how to pray. 00:23:44.43\00:23:44.93 He tried again. He said, "Oh Lord..." But again 00:23:44.93\00:23:48.93 there was dead silence. 00:23:48.93\00:23:49.46 He was so embarrassed, and then he remembered a 00:23:49.46\00:23:53.10 prayer his mother taught him when he was just a 00:23:53.10\00:23:54.06 little boy, and this is what that big giant of a 00:23:54.06\00:23:59.40 man prayed: Gentle Jesus, meek and mild Look upon a 00:23:59.40\00:24:05.00 little child; Forgive my simplicity And suffer me 00:24:05.00\00:24:06.06 to come to Thee. At that moment Ike Miller, the 00:24:06.06\00:24:12.83 drunkard, the brawler, the blasphemer, the wife 00:24:12.83\00:24:19.56 abuser, the womanizer, was born again.
