>>Bill: The French
philosopher, Jean Jacques
00:00:02.63\00:00:03.66
Rousseau, once said,
"Happiness is a good bank
00:00:03.66\00:00:05.93
account, a good cook, and
a good digestion." That is
00:00:05.93\00:00:10.73
what he would call today
"the good life." There are
00:00:10.73\00:00:11.76
many today who would
agree with him. There are some
00:00:11.76\00:00:16.60
who say that the good
life is physical. They believe
00:00:16.60\00:00:20.90
it just doesn't get any
better than a hot tub, a
00:00:20.90\00:00:21.90
back rub, and a drink
at the pub. But then there
00:00:21.90\00:00:25.33
are others who say
the good life is material.
00:00:25.33\00:00:29.13
They think that
got the mansion, the
00:00:29.13\00:00:30.10
Mercedes, and the
money, you are living the good
00:00:30.10\00:00:33.76
life. But God says the
good life is spiritual.

>>ANNOUNCER: IT HAS
STOOD THE TEST OF TIME...
00:00:54.96\00:00:56.60
GOD'S BOOK, THE BIBLE.
00:00:56.86\00:00:59.93
STILL RELEVANT IN
TODAY'S COMPLEX WORLD.
00:01:00.23\00:01:04.63
IT IS WRITTEN . . .
00:01:04.90\00:01:07.00
SHARING MESSAGES OF
HOPE AROUND THE WORLD.
00:01:07.26\00:01:11.13
(MUSIC)
00:01:11.46\00:01:29.30
Contrary to many opinions,
goodness is not feeling
00:01:29.70\00:01:30.90
good, looking good, or
owning good; it is being
00:01:30.90\00:01:34.20
good and doing good.
Since it is the fruit of the
00:01:34.20\00:01:39.50
Spirit, we know that
goodness can only come
00:01:39.50\00:01:40.43
from God. Goodness
is not something that
00:01:40.43\00:01:44.66
man manufacturers. It is
something that God gives.
00:01:44.66\00:01:48.76
Rom. 3:12 says, "There
is none who does good, no,
00:01:48.76\00:01:49.80
not one." People are not
basically good. People are
00:01:49.80\00:01:55.53
basically bad. You see,
goodness is only possible
00:01:55.53\00:02:01.30
with God. Have you
ever thought about the fact
00:02:01.30\00:02:02.30
that if you take the
word "God" out of the word
00:02:02.30\00:02:05.40
"good", all you are left
with is a big fat "o." In
00:02:05.40\00:02:11.33
fact, the word
"good" comes from an old
00:02:11.33\00:02:12.16
Anglo-Saxon word that
had the same connotation
00:02:12.16\00:02:16.26
as "God." "Goodbye"
is an abbreviation of the
00:02:16.26\00:02:19.60
Anglo-Saxon way of
saying, "God be with ye." Good
00:02:19.60\00:02:20.63
literally means
"to be like God."
00:02:20.63\00:02:29.96
>>Bill: Let me welcome
our viewers to this edition
00:02:31.26\00:02:32.33
of the "It Is Written"
program. We're so happy
00:02:32.33\00:02:35.00
that you have made
this time to join us. And we
00:02:35.00\00:02:39.56
are studying the Fruit
of the Spirit as found in
00:02:39.56\00:02:40.56
Galatians, chapter
five and verses 22 and 23
00:02:40.56\00:02:44.43
and we have made our
way to Goodness. As been our
00:02:44.43\00:02:50.66
habit, we have two
special guests with us
00:02:50.66\00:02:51.66
that are helping us
better understand what, all the
00:02:51.66\00:02:56.63
intricacies and all the
applications of this. We
00:02:56.63\00:03:00.86
have Pastor David
Schwinghammer and Pastor
00:03:00.86\00:03:01.73
Campbell Page. Gentlemen,
welcome. As we do every
00:03:01.73\00:03:06.10
time you are with us
we're going to ask you to
00:03:06.10\00:03:11.93
introduce yourselves for
the benefit of those that
00:03:11.93\00:03:12.93
may not be familiar
with you yet. >>Pastor Dave:
00:03:12.93\00:03:19.36
Sure. I'm Pastor Dave
Schwinghammer and I've
00:03:19.36\00:03:21.73
been pastoring for 15
years and I now serve as
00:03:21.73\00:03:22.70
a Stewardship Director
in the area of worship and
00:03:22.70\00:03:26.30
stewardship. We teach
people living a balanced
00:03:26.30\00:03:30.00
lifestyle in the area
of faith, family, fitness,
00:03:30.00\00:03:31.00
finance here in Ontario.
00:03:31.00\00:03:32.90
>>Bill: Well, that's
wonderful. Now, where were
00:03:32.90\00:03:33.90
you born? >>Pastor
Dave: Born in Toronto. >>Bill:
00:03:33.90\00:03:36.00
Born in Toronto.
>>Pastor Dave: Toronto, Ontario,
00:03:36.00\00:03:38.10
yeah. >>Bill: Oh,
but you lived out toward
00:03:38.10\00:03:39.03
Leamington, did you?
00:03:39.03\00:03:42.40
>>Pastor Dave: Yes.
That's correct. >>Bill: But
00:03:42.40\00:03:43.53
you're actually born
in Toronto. >>Pastor Dave:
00:03:43.53\00:03:45.40
Born in Toronto.
>>Bill: So was I. >>Pastor Dave:
00:03:45.40\00:03:47.30
Yeah. >>Bill: And
Pastor Campbell Page, welcome.
00:03:47.30\00:03:48.30
>>Pastor Page: Thank you.
00:03:48.30\00:03:49.76
Good to be here. I was
actually born, or grew up
00:03:49.76\00:03:50.76
in Saskatchewan and
have been in Oshawa for the
00:03:50.76\00:03:55.43
last 7 years, pastoring
a church in downtown Oshawa
00:03:55.43\00:03:59.60
called "Newlife
Seventh-day Adventist
00:03:59.60\00:04:00.66
Church". And just very
passionate about helping
00:04:00.66\00:04:03.40
people know God and
helping that, to help them
00:04:03.40\00:04:10.66
become very visible
agents of change and
00:04:10.66\00:04:11.56
transformation in
their lives, the people they
00:04:11.56\00:04:14.53
work with, the
community we're in, all of that.
00:04:14.53\00:04:17.23
Making God real.
That's a big passion for us
00:04:17.23\00:04:18.20
>>Bill: Excellent. Is
there a website for your
00:04:18.20\00:04:21.63
church? If anybody is
interested in.>>Pastor
00:04:21.63\00:04:25.33
Campbell: Just brand
new, a couple glitches
00:04:25.33\00:04:26.26
we're working out but
newlifeadventistchurch.com
00:04:26.26\00:04:28.36
. >>Bill
Newlifeadventistchurch.com
00:04:28.36\00:04:31.13
. Excellent. Okay, well,
you know, we've been going
00:04:31.13\00:04:32.30
through this study here.
00:04:32.30\00:04:37.56
Paul contrasts the deeds
of the flesh which we have
00:04:37.56\00:04:38.60
said on previous programs
and just to recap are the,
00:04:38.60\00:04:46.86
I don't know, would you
say the natural tendencies
00:04:46.86\00:04:50.73
of our, the ways of
our heart. These are, sort
00:04:50.73\00:04:51.73
of, the things that come
without much effort on our
00:04:51.73\00:04:56.43
part. And then he says,
but, you know, in contrast
00:04:56.43\00:05:00.96
to that is what he
calls the Fruit of the Spirit
00:05:00.96\00:05:01.96
are the things that
when the Spirit takes control
00:05:01.96\00:05:06.23
of your life these are
the things that begin to
00:05:06.23\00:05:10.03
appear in the life of
those. And Goodness is the
00:05:10.03\00:05:11.06
one that we're at and,
you know, as we were talking
00:05:11.06\00:05:18.40
before we sat down to
tape this, Goodness it's one of
00:05:18.40\00:05:23.80
those words that's not
really much used anymore
00:05:23.80\00:05:24.76
in our vocabulary, is it?
00:05:24.76\00:05:28.86
>>Pastor Dave: No.
>>Bill: And, you know, it almost
00:05:28.86\00:05:29.90
has, like, a
negative, a bit of a negative
00:05:29.90\00:05:35.20
connotation when we say,
you know, he's good. It's
00:05:35.20\00:05:38.10
like they're lacking in
something else, you know,
00:05:38.10\00:05:39.13
it's just.they're good.
00:05:39.13\00:05:42.16
But, you know, let's
look at what it is that,
00:05:42.16\00:05:43.10
you know, we
believe Paul means by
00:05:43.10\00:05:47.60
this manifestation
here Goodness and what it is
00:05:47.60\00:05:51.73
and how do we
exhibit that and what are the
00:05:51.73\00:05:52.80
results of Goodness in
the followers of Jesus Christ.
00:05:52.80\00:05:57.83
So, wherever you gentlemen
want to begin. >>Pastor
00:05:57.83\00:06:01.96
Dave: You just made
me think of, I hear young
00:06:01.96\00:06:02.93
people today as I go
through schools and I hear
00:06:02.93\00:06:05.50
them say, oh, that's
bad, that is so bad, that's
00:06:05.50\00:06:08.96
wicked or .>>Bill:
Sick. >>Pastor Dave:.sick.
00:06:08.96\00:06:10.06
(Laughter) And actually
it means it's good. You're
00:06:10.06\00:06:12.30
right, the word
goodness has a whole different
00:06:12.30\00:06:14.53
meaning today but I,
the first thought that came
00:06:14.53\00:06:15.53
to my mind was back
in Genesis where God
00:06:15.53\00:06:19.70
is creating the world
and He looks at the different
00:06:19.70\00:06:24.86
parts of Creation and
it's good and He makes a point
00:06:24.86\00:06:26.03
and he says, that's good.
00:06:26.03\00:06:28.40
That's good, that's good.
00:06:28.40\00:06:28.93
And He gets to the
end, He created mankind and
00:06:28.93\00:06:32.26
humanity and He says,
this is very good. And then
00:06:32.26\00:06:33.40
they make some choices
then that weren't so good.
00:06:33.40\00:06:38.16
They exhibit behaviour
that wasn't good and you
00:06:38.16\00:06:41.00
see this pattern
throughout all of
00:06:41.00\00:06:41.86
Scripture where God's
trying to work towards
00:06:41.86\00:06:44.06
restoring what once was
and now was lost. And Paul
00:06:44.06\00:06:48.73
says here that there is
way that we can experience
00:06:48.73\00:06:49.80
goodness by walking in
the Spirit. >>Pastor Page: I.
00:06:49.80\00:06:53.66
>>Bill: Go ahead.
>>Pastor Page: I was thinking it
00:06:53.66\00:06:57.10
was the Fruit of the
Spirit here seems to be
00:06:57.10\00:06:58.06
a way of regaining
that Genesis 1 situation and
00:06:58.06\00:07:03.30
context that we
were created in. We were
00:07:03.30\00:07:08.20
created to be good, to
have goodness as part of
00:07:08.20\00:07:09.16
us and that's allowing
the Spirit in is a way of
00:07:09.16\00:07:14.93
returning that to
the image that God has
00:07:14.93\00:07:18.43
originally intended for
us and that to be growing.
00:07:18.43\00:07:19.50
So I think it's, it's
God coming around full circle
00:07:19.50\00:07:25.03
from where we walked
away and lacked trust in Him
00:07:25.03\00:07:28.90
and coming back and
the results of that is this
00:07:28.90\00:07:29.93
goodness that we should
have had from the start.
00:07:29.93\00:07:34.36
>>Bill: Now, to me that
sounds like God is asking
00:07:34.36\00:07:39.23
His children to still
conduct themselves in a
00:07:39.23\00:07:40.23
way that they should,
that they would have even
00:07:40.23\00:07:50.63
if everything around
then was good, when now we are
00:07:50.63\00:07:54.56
surrounded by everything
that is corrupt. >>Pastor
00:07:54.56\00:07:55.56
Dave: Right. >>Bill:
That even though we are
00:07:55.56\00:07:57.93
surrounded by
everything that is not good and
00:07:57.93\00:08:02.06
wickedness, God's
expectation of his
00:08:02.06\00:08:02.86
followers is that we
remain good. >>Pastor
00:08:02.86\00:08:07.23
Dave: Right. >>Bill: And
that can't be done outside
00:08:07.23\00:08:10.16
of the intervention
of the Holy Spirit, right
00:08:10.16\00:08:11.13
>>Pastor Dave: No.
>>Bill: No. >>Pastor Dave: I
00:08:11.13\00:08:14.63
think that's the challenge
today, is on our own we
00:08:14.63\00:08:17.26
can't do that. When Paul
starts off, I love how he
00:08:17.26\00:08:18.43
starts off in Galatians,
chapter five and verse 16,
00:08:18.43\00:08:21.10
he says, "I say live by
the Spirit".and this word
00:08:21.10\00:08:25.40
'live' is the
word "parapatago" which
00:08:25.40\00:08:26.36
actually means to
walk or regulate your life
00:08:26.36\00:08:30.73
according to the Spirit
And he actually bookends
00:08:30.73\00:08:33.76
that section on the
Fruit of the Spirit in the last
00:08:33.76\00:08:34.80
verse, he says in 26,
"Let us walk or keep in step
00:08:34.80\00:08:38.43
with the Spirit". Another
Greek word "stocao" which
00:08:38.43\00:08:45.20
means 'to proceed in a
row or keep in step like a
00:08:45.20\00:08:46.23
march, like a soldier
with the Spirit'. So, our focus
00:08:46.23\00:08:50.40
when we focus on things
around us and the choices
00:08:50.40\00:08:55.36
that are being made
and the choices contrary to
00:08:55.36\00:08:56.40
God, we'll move farther
away from God but when we
00:08:56.40\00:08:59.90
focus our focus is on
the Spirit, walking with the
00:08:59.90\00:09:03.43
Spirit, listening to the
Spirit, abiding with God,
00:09:03.43\00:09:04.43
staying connected
with God then something, a
00:09:04.43\00:09:08.13
transformation
happens within us. Some of the
00:09:08.13\00:09:11.46
choices that we used
to struggle with as God
00:09:11.46\00:09:12.43
begins to transform us,
we begin to change and we
00:09:12.43\00:09:16.40
can't do that. We can
try to do that on the outside
00:09:16.40\00:09:19.76
but God does it on the
inside, which is really
00:09:19.76\00:09:20.76
how it should be.
>>Pastor Page: Like to go with
00:09:20.76\00:09:23.40
Pastor Dave there, its
2Peter talks about how we
00:09:23.40\00:09:29.36
are, oh, sorry, 1Peter
talks about how we're this
00:09:29.36\00:09:30.50
chosen people, the
people of God, those who profess
00:09:30.50\00:09:34.76
to follow Him and that
God actually gives us His
00:09:34.76\00:09:39.16
goodness, His glory.
And that that in its turn is
00:09:39.16\00:09:40.13
to help others see
His goodness. Not us,
00:09:40.13\00:09:42.93
you know, there's so
many times where probably most
00:09:42.93\00:09:51.26
Christians can
identify with, a lot of
00:09:51.26\00:09:52.13
non-Christians maybe
more so, the sense that
00:09:52.13\00:09:57.00
people can be good on the
outside, the behaviour can
00:09:57.00\00:10:00.16
be there but that
inner sense of really being
00:10:00.16\00:10:01.30
good, that can only come
from God. And that's what
00:10:01.30\00:10:07.63
He wants the world to see
And so, I think it's a bit
00:10:07.63\00:10:14.26
of a challenge. I
think maybe the church isn't
00:10:14.26\00:10:15.40
portraying that in the
way it should be, in our time
00:10:15.40\00:10:18.86
right now and yet,
people are desiring it. >>Bill:
00:10:18.86\00:10:23.66
So God uses me as a
means by which He can
00:10:23.66\00:10:24.56
demonstrate His
goodness to others. He does
00:10:24.56\00:10:27.86
that.>>Pastor Page: Yes.
00:10:27.86\00:10:28.33
>>Bill:.and He does
that through me. I love the
00:10:28.33\00:10:30.33
idea of this walk because
it gives me the sense that
00:10:30.33\00:10:36.03
it's a daily - it's not
something that I invest a
00:10:36.03\00:10:37.06
little bit of time in
now and, you know, okay,
00:10:37.06\00:10:43.33
from now on I'm, that's
it It's a daily, it's a daily
00:10:43.33\00:10:47.56
commitment. It's a
daily struggle, a daily walk
00:10:47.56\00:10:48.53
with the Spirit. Where,
you know, I at any moment
00:10:48.53\00:10:53.93
when I let go of that,
right, now I'm susceptible
00:10:53.93\00:10:59.33
to falling and beginning
to exhibit some of these
00:10:59.33\00:11:00.36
deeds of the flesh
versus the Fruit of the Spirit.
00:11:00.36\00:11:03.80
>>Pastor Dave: I think
it's two-fold, number one
00:11:03.80\00:11:06.96
God empowers us.
>>Bill: Yes. >>Pastor Dave: He
00:11:06.96\00:11:08.03
gives us the strength to
do that. The other day I'm
00:11:08.03\00:11:10.40
in church and I'm
watching our organist and he's
00:11:10.40\00:11:13.76
amazing, amazing guy
and he plays three or four
00:11:13.76\00:11:14.76
keyboards on the
organ and there's buttons
00:11:14.76\00:11:19.16
everywhere, and stops,
and there's pedals and I'm
00:11:19.16\00:11:21.60
watching him move
his whole body perfectly
00:11:21.60\00:11:22.53
reflecting the
requirements of the page,
00:11:22.53\00:11:26.16
you know, the notes.
He's happy, he's loving it,
00:11:26.16\00:11:29.20
he's make beautiful
music, effortlessly. And I was
00:11:29.20\00:11:30.26
thinking as I was sitting
there, God I want my life
00:11:30.26\00:11:34.56
to be good in that way
for you. I don't want it to be
00:11:34.56\00:11:39.80
- I know it's going to
be effort, I know my natural
00:11:39.80\00:11:40.83
choices are going to
be different from what you
00:11:40.83\00:11:43.86
want but I think God
can empower us to experience
00:11:43.86\00:11:47.83
that abundant life,
the life in his Kingdom and
00:11:47.83\00:11:48.86
following His Spirit
that Jesus modelled for us.
00:11:48.86\00:11:51.53
>>Bill: It should almost
become instinctive, right?
00:11:51.53\00:11:54.86
It's almost like an
instinctive response. Now,
00:11:54.86\00:11:55.96
Pastor Page you raising
that thought I thought was
00:11:55.96\00:12:03.03
interesting where you
said that we all know, or folks
00:12:03.03\00:12:11.03
that are exhibit goodness
on the exterior but that's
00:12:11.03\00:12:12.10
not reflective of the
interior, right? >>Pastor
00:12:12.10\00:12:16.56
Page: Right. >>Bill:
Jesus, there in the 24th
00:12:16.56\00:12:19.40
chapter of Matthew
talks, you know, He talks about
00:12:19.40\00:12:20.53
the second
coming, He talks about the
00:12:20.53\00:12:22.33
hypocrites, right?
"That will be cut into pieces
00:12:22.33\00:12:24.70
and there will be gnashing
of teeth and weeping", and
00:12:24.70\00:12:25.80
he talks about, the word
hypocrite in Greek is from
00:12:25.80\00:12:29.16
the word 'actor'. An
actor who portrays something on
00:12:29.16\00:12:36.36
the exterior which
they are not in the interior
00:12:36.36\00:12:37.40
And, you know, you
can be good when people
00:12:37.40\00:12:44.00
are responding to you in
goodness but is - because
00:12:44.00\00:12:52.46
we talked about love on
one program.>>Pastor Page
00:12:52.46\00:12:53.63
Yes. >>Bill:.right. We
talked about; Jesus said
00:12:53.63\00:12:56.90
love your neighbours. I
think the challenge here
00:12:56.90\00:13:00.10
becomes exhibiting
goodness when what you
00:13:00.10\00:13:01.00
receive in response is
not goodness. I'll tell you,
00:13:01.00\00:13:07.26
if that goodness is
only on the exterior, boy,
00:13:07.26\00:13:11.76
that's not going to hold
up. >>Pastor Page: That's
00:13:11.76\00:13:12.76
right. >>Pastor
Dave: I think the reward
00:13:12.76\00:13:19.03
of repaying that type
of behaviour with goodness,
00:13:19.03\00:13:24.73
you know, there's a
push, there's a real
00:13:24.73\00:13:25.60
intentionality
about these random acts of
00:13:25.60\00:13:27.36
kindness.>>Bill: Yes.
00:13:27.36\00:13:27.83
>>Pastor Dave: People
don't deserve it but you
00:13:27.83\00:13:29.73
just do it anyway.
And when I think of my own
00:13:29.73\00:13:32.20
personal journey, those
times when I've retaliated
00:13:32.20\00:13:33.26
or I've responded back
you want to do that, I'll do
00:13:33.26\00:13:37.46
that back, I think of
how I felt and the pain and
00:13:37.46\00:13:42.16
the consequences of
that versus saying, you know
00:13:42.16\00:13:43.16
what, no, no, I
know you must be hurting
00:13:43.16\00:13:46.23
or something's going on
in your life and I'm going to
00:13:46.23\00:13:48.36
repay that with goodness.
00:13:48.36\00:13:48.90
The rewards, the
feeling's just amazing. There's
00:13:48.90\00:13:51.33
something to that, you
know. >>Pastor Campbell:
00:13:51.33\00:13:52.30
Yeah, I think that, Bill,
you're part of what you're
00:13:52.30\00:13:55.40
raising there and part
of the struggle between
00:13:55.40\00:13:58.43
goodness and whatever
our other choices are, is
00:13:58.43\00:13:59.43
power. You know, it's
when we come down to things. I
00:13:59.43\00:14:05.70
don't remember where the
quote is from but I heard
00:14:05.70\00:14:10.10
one time that God is
looking for people He can
00:14:10.10\00:14:11.06
trust with His power.
And you go back to the
00:14:11.06\00:14:15.83
idea that the world,
He sees this power, this
00:14:15.83\00:14:20.56
transformational power
that just totally changes
00:14:20.56\00:14:21.56
everything. And
goodness, I mean, let's take the
00:14:21.56\00:14:25.10
other side of it, we
can look at the world right
00:14:25.10\00:14:29.73
now and see what power
connected with people who
00:14:29.73\00:14:30.73
aren't good at the core
what happens. And yet, we,
00:14:30.73\00:14:35.16
we continue to hope
for that. What happens when
00:14:35.16\00:14:42.16
you connect that power
of God with goodness and
00:14:42.16\00:14:43.13
love and all the
rest, the Fruit? And I look
00:14:43.13\00:14:48.43
at goodness as a key
component. You know if I
00:14:48.43\00:14:53.46
want someone to
exercise power towards me I sure
00:14:53.46\00:14:54.46
hope that their heart's
good. That's what Proverbs
00:14:54.46\00:14:58.50
4:23 says, "Guard your
heart because out of that
00:14:58.50\00:15:02.46
everything else comes".
00:15:02.46\00:15:03.00
That's the well-spring
of life. So I think it's
00:15:03.00\00:15:07.33
important to look at it
that way. God's trying to
00:15:07.33\00:15:08.46
trust us with a power
that speaks worlds into
00:15:08.46\00:15:12.36
existence. So He wants us
to be good. >>Bill: I love
00:15:12.36\00:15:16.63
that about God's
looking for people He can trust
00:15:16.63\00:15:17.63
>>Pastor Page: Yeah. I
forget where it was but
00:15:17.63\00:15:21.80
it's an amazing statement
>>Bill: It is an amazing
00:15:21.80\00:15:23.63
statement. It is an
amazing statement. You
00:15:23.63\00:15:24.66
know, going back to the
random acts of kindness, I
00:15:24.66\00:15:27.46
know a lot of churches
do and I think it's amazing
00:15:27.46\00:15:29.16
to me how people are
surprised by those acts
00:15:29.16\00:15:30.23
of kindness. It says
to me that maybe we, as
00:15:30.23\00:15:36.20
Christians, aren't
being as good as we should be
00:15:36.20\00:15:39.86
because it shouldn't be
a surprise. People should
00:15:39.86\00:15:40.90
be expecting that from
the followers of Jesus Christ,
00:15:40.90\00:15:43.83
but, you know,
listen, we're all in this boat
00:15:43.83\00:15:48.93
together. Sometimes
the only difference between
00:15:48.93\00:15:49.96
Christians and anybody
else is that I recognize
00:15:49.96\00:15:52.93
that I'm a sinner
and I desperately need, I
00:15:52.93\00:15:54.93
desperately need the
help of a Saviour. I'm
00:15:54.93\00:15:55.96
not going to turn to
a self-help book, I'm
00:15:55.96\00:15:58.66
not going to turn to a
motivational speaker, I'm
00:15:58.66\00:16:01.26
going to turn to Jesus
Christ and ask that His
00:16:01.26\00:16:02.26
spirit to empower me in
my life. We're all in the
00:16:02.26\00:16:05.43
same boat. >>Pastor Dave:
Exactly. I think that's so
00:16:05.43\00:16:09.33
key. Jesus said, Apart
from me, you just can't
00:16:09.33\00:16:10.50
do this. You just can't
do this. So if I try and do
00:16:10.50\00:16:14.10
this on my own that's
when the mistakes come. That
00:16:14.10\00:16:18.06
connection, I think
that's what Paul's trying to
00:16:18.06\00:16:19.10
say here is, live by
the Spirit, walk by the
00:16:19.10\00:16:21.66
Spirit, keep in step
with the Spirit, and naturally
00:16:21.66\00:16:23.46
and the outflow of
this will come acts of
00:16:23.46\00:16:24.46
goodness. You'll just
start to change. And David
00:16:24.46\00:16:27.43
said, you know, can you
change my heart, God? You
00:16:27.43\00:16:30.46
need to change.
Create within me a brand new
00:16:30.46\00:16:31.53
heart and I think that
transformation happened
00:16:31.53\00:16:34.03
a step at a time,
staying connected with God. The
00:16:34.03\00:16:36.10
more we do it, what I
find is the more we do it it's
00:16:36.10\00:16:37.16
more contagious. You
know, I find other people doing
00:16:37.16\00:16:43.10
it and responding back
to me in that way, so it's
00:16:43.10\00:16:45.50
contagious. >>Bill: We,
it always comes back to that,
00:16:45.50\00:16:46.60
the relationship, doesn't
it? You know, we do these
00:16:46.60\00:16:51.93
health programs with Dr.
00:16:51.93\00:16:52.40
Ferreira and some of
these other folks and it always
00:16:52.40\00:16:55.40
comes back to, you
know, whatever you tried, it
00:16:55.40\00:16:59.03
always comes back to
eat the right stuff.>>Pastor
00:16:59.03\00:17:00.06
Dave: Yeah. >>Bill:.and
all of these comes back
00:17:00.06\00:17:01.73
to the relationship,
you know, spend time in
00:17:01.73\00:17:05.06
prayer. >>Pastor Page:
Yes, yeah. >>Bill: Spend
00:17:05.06\00:17:06.16
time in studying
the Bible. You know,
00:17:06.16\00:17:09.63
spend time with likeminded
people in the community of
00:17:09.63\00:17:15.13
church community, right?
00:17:15.13\00:17:15.63
>>Pastor Page: Right.
00:17:15.63\00:17:16.10
>>Bill: You're going to
draw strength from that.
00:17:16.10\00:17:18.46
You know, we don't,
you know, we as pastors, we
00:17:18.46\00:17:21.50
don't talk about that,
just, that, we don't just
00:17:21.50\00:17:22.50
talk about that, we
don't want people coming to
00:17:22.50\00:17:25.73
church because we want
to have a large congregation
00:17:25.73\00:17:28.06
to preach to.>>Pastor
Dave: No. Exactly, yeah.
00:17:28.06\00:17:29.03
>>Bill:.because that's
where the power resides.
00:17:29.03\00:17:31.40
It resides in you getting
on your knees. It resides
00:17:31.40\00:17:35.33
in you taking time out
of your busy day, you know,
00:17:35.33\00:17:36.46
and spending moments
in God's word reading
00:17:36.46\00:17:40.16
it and studying it
Transformations occur. It
00:17:40.16\00:17:42.86
sounds almost cliché
for people. How can it be
00:17:42.86\00:17:43.83
that simple? But it is.
00:17:43.83\00:17:49.46
>>Pastor Dave: God shows
up. >>Bill: That's right.
00:17:49.46\00:17:50.46
>>Pastor Dave: When you
come to meet Him in those
00:17:50.46\00:17:56.43
places, He shows up. And
just over time, yeah, you
00:17:56.43\00:17:58.80
start seeing the
changes but you have to meet
00:17:58.80\00:17:59.86
with Him. >>Bill: Yeah.
00:17:59.86\00:18:01.43
Absolutely right.
We're coming down, our time
00:18:01.43\00:18:02.43
always zips by and you
guys may have something
00:18:02.43\00:18:03.96
that you would like
to share with our viewers
00:18:03.96\00:18:15.13
before our times wraps
up so, I want to make sure I
00:18:15.13\00:18:16.26
give you enough time to
do that. So, maybe Pastor
00:18:16.26\00:18:20.66
Dave you want to
share some closing thoughts.
00:18:20.66\00:18:24.23
>>Pastor Dave: I was
living in St. Catherine's
00:18:24.23\00:18:25.20
Niagara area for a
few years, starting our
00:18:25.20\00:18:29.76
ministry, and I remember
driving by this Burgoyne
00:18:29.76\00:18:32.70
Bridge, it's been there
since the mid 1800's and
00:18:32.70\00:18:33.70
James Rollins put
that bridge up against all
00:18:33.70\00:18:37.06
that, I mean, people
were saying can't be done,
00:18:37.06\00:18:41.10
can't be done and he
ended up proving with
00:18:41.10\00:18:41.96
determination, he
bridged the gap between
00:18:41.96\00:18:44.30
two countries with the
suspension bridge. And it
00:18:44.30\00:18:48.13
was 1855, March 16th
that the first locomotive made
00:18:48.13\00:18:49.16
it over there and I
think t's amazing when we're
00:18:49.16\00:18:53.46
determined and we're
intentional about doing
00:18:53.46\00:18:57.03
something good and
bridging the gap that we
00:18:57.03\00:18:57.93
think that it can be done.
00:18:57.93\00:19:00.50
Now, we add to that
the ultimate power, the
00:19:00.50\00:19:01.60
promise that we can do
anything by living in the
00:19:01.60\00:19:05.43
Spirit, walking with
God, it's endless. It can be
00:19:05.43\00:19:08.83
done and it's so
rewarding. >>Bill: Praise
00:19:08.83\00:19:09.70
God. Pastor Page, maybe
some closing thoughts in
00:19:09.70\00:19:13.40
the last couple
minutes >>Pastor Page: Yeah. Of
00:19:13.40\00:19:17.30
any of the Fruit of
the Spirit, this is one I
00:19:17.30\00:19:18.40
struggle with the most.
00:19:18.40\00:19:22.43
Simply from the point of,
I was growing up with four
00:19:22.43\00:19:23.50
brothers and I was the
one that really, I didn't
00:19:23.50\00:19:29.33
rebel, I didn't, you
know, I was considered one of
00:19:29.33\00:19:31.66
the good ones, and
yet, realized as I came to
00:19:31.66\00:19:32.83
Christ in my adult
years that there was a lot of
00:19:32.83\00:19:38.23
ungoodness there. A lot
of bad, a lot of evil and so,
00:19:38.23\00:19:42.10
when I come across
this and just previous in
00:19:42.10\00:19:43.06
Chapter 2, Paul talks
about how it's no longer I
00:19:43.06\00:19:50.66
to live, it's Christ
that lives in me. My thought,
00:19:50.66\00:19:55.53
you know, I think of
David's words, "goodness,
00:19:55.53\00:19:56.50
your goodness and
mercy will pursue me all the
00:19:56.50\00:20:02.66
days of my life". God's
goodness is right there.
00:20:02.66\00:20:06.80
You know, chasing after
us like a hound dog chasing
00:20:06.80\00:20:07.83
after its game and all
we need to do is let him
00:20:07.83\00:20:13.10
grab hold of us and
that goodness, you know, will
00:20:13.10\00:20:15.80
become a part of who
we are. And change the bad
00:20:15.80\00:20:16.96
that's inside so we
start living, Christ starts
00:20:16.96\00:20:21.00
living more fully through
us. >>Bill: And others are
00:20:21.00\00:20:24.93
then.>>Pastor Page:
Drawn to us. >>Bill: Yeah.
00:20:24.93\00:20:25.90
>>Pastor Page: You bet.
00:20:25.90\00:20:28.36
>>Bill: Which is
really the core of all of this
00:20:28.36\00:20:29.40
Gentlemen, thank you
for your insights. >>Pastor
00:20:29.40\00:20:32.00
Dave: Thank you.
>>Bill: Have you ever thought
00:20:32.00\00:20:35.03
about the fact that a
musician is not judged by
00:20:35.03\00:20:36.03
how long he plays but how
well he plays? Sir Francis
00:20:36.03\00:20:40.46
Bacon once said, "Of all
the virtues and dignities
00:20:40.46\00:20:44.23
of the mind, goodness
is the greatest being the
00:20:44.23\00:20:45.23
character of the deity
and without it man is a busy,
00:20:45.23\00:20:51.13
mischievous,
wretched thing". See the world
00:20:51.13\00:20:58.63
expects believers,
who call themselves
00:20:58.63\00:20:59.50
Christians, to be good
and to be godly, to be the
00:20:59.50\00:21:03.66
real thing and not a
cheap imitation. Mahatma Ghandi
00:21:03.66\00:21:07.86
once said, "I would
have become a Christian
00:21:07.86\00:21:08.83
if I had met more
true Christians". Friends,
00:21:08.83\00:21:12.66
this whole world is
full of badness and what it
00:21:12.66\00:21:18.00
desperately needs is
goodness. Goodness that is
00:21:18.00\00:21:19.00
produced by knowing
Jesus, loving God, and bearing
00:21:19.00\00:21:24.33
the Fruit of the Holy
Spirit. Pastor Page would
00:21:24.33\00:21:31.76
you lead us in prayer.
00:21:31.76\00:21:32.26
>>Pastor Page: Our
Heavenly Father, we thank
00:21:32.26\00:21:36.60
you again that as we
look at the life that we want
00:21:36.60\00:21:37.60
to live with you and that
life that we want of Jesus
00:21:37.60\00:21:44.16
shining out of us and
taking care of the issues
00:21:44.16\00:21:48.60
of our lives. But also
just changing that core of
00:21:48.60\00:21:49.63
who we are, our character,
to be more like Him. That
00:21:49.63\00:21:53.26
you don't leave us to do
that alone, you don't just
00:21:53.26\00:21:57.50
leave us with just the
best plans that you can
00:21:57.50\00:21:58.50
come up with. You send
your very own goodness and
00:21:58.50\00:22:02.96
your glory into our
lives, you're very presence so
00:22:02.96\00:22:05.86
that we can become
more like you again so that
00:22:05.86\00:22:06.86
others can look to us
and be drawn to Jesus because
00:22:06.86\00:22:11.20
they see your goodness
through us. Let us pray,
00:22:11.20\00:22:16.13
Lord, for everyone
watching that you will
00:22:16.13\00:22:17.03
help us, Lord, to
turn around and choose to
00:22:17.03\00:22:21.10
accept this goodness and
mercy that God is chasing
00:22:21.10\00:22:26.03
us with. So that we
can just benefit in the
00:22:26.03\00:22:27.00
blessing of Him in a
part of everything we do.
00:22:27.00\00:22:32.33
We thank you, Jesus,
and pray in your name. Amen.
00:22:32.33\00:22:37.40
>>Pastor Dave:
Amen. >>Bill: Amen.
00:22:37.40\00:22:39.93
(MUSIC)
00:22:40.43\00:22:53.86
(MUSIC)
00:22:55.96\00:23:12.66
>>Bev: Hi, everyone!
Are you one of the 80% of
00:23:12.96\00:23:13.93
the population who
isn't getting enough physical
00:23:13.93\00:23:16.70
activity every day? If
you are, I've got to tell you,
00:23:16.70\00:23:20.53
you are missing out on
so many health benefits!
00:23:20.53\00:23:21.50
Here's what the
current research is telling us;
00:23:21.50\00:23:26.46
Did you know that being
physically active helps to
00:23:26.46\00:23:30.70
strengthen the muscle
around your joints, and
00:23:30.70\00:23:31.70
can thus help to slow
joint damage. And, good
00:23:31.70\00:23:34.86
news! A study published
in Archives of Internal
00:23:34.86\00:23:39.16
Medicine found that for
men with prostate cancer
00:23:39.16\00:23:40.16
who are older than
65, three to four hours of
00:23:40.16\00:23:43.90
vigorous exercise weekly
actually helped slow down
00:23:43.90\00:23:48.73
the progression of
their cancer. Health benefits
00:23:48.73\00:23:49.73
were also found for
colon cancer survivors and
00:23:49.73\00:23:54.06
breast cancer
survivors who engaged in regular
00:23:54.06\00:23:58.93
physical activity.
For those suffering from
00:23:58.93\00:23:59.86
osteoporosis, regular
exercise strengthens the
00:23:59.86\00:24:02.63
muscles, which in
turn strengthens the bones.
00:24:02.63\00:24:06.80
Especially for older
adults, experts say that
00:24:06.80\00:24:07.73
staying physically
active can mean the difference
00:24:07.73\00:24:12.70
between a healthy,
independent individual and
00:24:12.70\00:24:15.10
a frail individual who
relies on others for care
00:24:15.10\00:24:16.10
Which one would you
rather be? If you want to put
00:24:16.10\00:24:21.06
life in your years,
you'd better get those walking
00:24:21.06\00:24:23.86
shoes on and hit the
pavement. Or, go swimming.
00:24:23.86\00:24:24.86
Or gardening. Whatever
you choose to do, make it
00:24:24.86\00:24:27.86
something you enjoy and
do it at least five days each
00:24:27.86\00:24:35.46
week. As well,
research shows that you can even
00:24:35.46\00:24:36.50
slow the onset and the
progression of dementia,
00:24:36.50\00:24:40.80
simply by being more
active now! Preserve your
00:24:40.80\00:24:45.53
memory for as long
as possible by adding
00:24:45.53\00:24:46.56
physical activity into
your every day schedule.
00:24:46.56\00:24:50.53
Speaking of your brain,
regular physical activity
00:24:50.53\00:24:54.90
is a wonderful way
to keep headaches away
00:24:54.90\00:24:55.80
Endorphins, the body's
natural pain relievers,
00:24:55.80\00:24:59.20
are produced when you
exercise. They can boost
00:24:59.20\00:25:03.10
your mood as well as
reduce the sensation of
00:25:03.10\00:25:04.20
pain. Exercise is
also a great antidote for
00:25:04.20\00:25:08.80
depression. Feeling blue?
00:25:08.80\00:25:09.30
Get outside and walk
your troubles away! One of the
00:25:09.30\00:25:14.06
best things you can do
for yourself and your family
00:25:14.06\00:25:19.50
is to turn off
your television and get
00:25:19.50\00:25:20.46
yourselves outside.
Don't just send your children
00:25:20.46\00:25:23.56
out to play; you need
to go with them! Remember,
00:25:23.56\00:25:27.00
you don't have to sweat
profusely or feel any pain
00:25:27.00\00:25:28.06
in order to experience
the benefits of regular
00:25:28.06\00:25:32.80
activity. Also, if
you have any health
00:25:32.80\00:25:36.70
conditions, remember to
check with your physician
00:25:36.70\00:25:37.73
first before starting
an exercise program. There
00:25:37.73\00:25:42.93
are so many health
benefits that come with
00:25:42.93\00:25:46.06
being active; I've
only listed a few. Be
00:25:46.06\00:25:46.96
encouraged to go
for a walk right after
00:25:46.96\00:25:49.73
you finish watching this
program, even if it's just
00:25:49.73\00:25:52.63
for a few minutes.
00:25:52.63\00:25:53.06
Gradually work your
way up to at least thirty
00:25:53.06\00:25:57.06
minutes, and then aim
for more. Don't be a couch
00:25:57.06\00:25:58.06
potato! Research shows
that not getting regular
00:25:58.06\00:26:01.33
physical activity is as
bad as smoking a pack of
00:26:01.33\00:26:05.90
cigarettes daily! So, get
going! You can do it! Live
00:26:05.90\00:26:06.96
healthy,
everyone! See you next time!
00:26:06.96\00:26:13.90
>>Bill: If you would
like to get to know this Jesus
00:26:19.50\00:26:20.53
that resides in the
pages of this book, better, and
00:26:20.53\00:26:23.93
have that transforming
power in your life, well,
00:26:23.93\00:26:28.66
the Discover Bible
Study Guides are a great
00:26:28.66\00:26:29.56
way to do that. They
are excellent lessons. They
00:26:29.56\00:26:33.30
come to your home,
postage paid, free of charge. It
00:26:33.30\00:26:37.20
is our gift to you.
Here is the information you
00:26:37.20\00:26:38.16
need to get your first lesson.
00:26:38.16\00:26:43.40
>>Bill: Well, Pastors,
let me thank you for being on
00:27:41.66\00:27:42.83
our program and for
your wonderful insights.
00:27:42.83\00:27:45.40
>>Pastor Dave and
Pastor Page: Thank you. >>Bill:
00:27:45.40\00:27:47.70
Let me thank you, our
faithful viewer. You tune
00:27:47.70\00:27:48.80
in each and every week
and we appreciate that very,
00:27:48.80\00:27:52.60
very much. You know, I
want to let you know that
00:27:52.60\00:27:56.90
we're preparing a DVD
of all of these programs in
00:27:56.90\00:27:58.00
this series and at the
end of the series they will
00:27:58.00\00:28:01.20
be available to you
for a donation of $40. Now,
00:28:01.20\00:28:05.13
those $40 will go directly
to help keep this ministry
00:28:05.13\00:28:06.23
on the air. You can go
to our website and there
00:28:06.23\00:28:10.10
you can pre-order it,
itiswrittencanada.ca. Our
00:28:10.10\00:28:15.40
prayer is that we will
have this privilege again
00:28:15.40\00:28:16.40
next week. Until then,
remember, it is written;
00:28:16.40\00:28:20.13
man shall not live by
bread alone but by every
00:28:20.13\00:28:24.40
word that proceeds
from the mouth of God.
00:28:24.40\00:28:28.96
