Teaser: Benjamin Ewell is best remembered for 00:00:03.20\00:00:04.16 his 16 year tenure as the President of the College 00:00:04.16\00:00:07.46 of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. 00:00:07.46\00:00:11.93 For a century and a half, this prestigious Virginia 00:00:11.93\00:00:13.06 school had been a leader among American 00:00:13.06\00:00:16.53 universities. Then came the Civil War. In the hard 00:00:16.53\00:00:21.26 days of Reconstruction which followed, William 00:00:21.26\00:00:22.26 and Mary went bankrupt. 00:00:22.26\00:00:25.86 Soon it had a deserted campus, decaying 00:00:25.86\00:00:26.70 buildings, and no students. As with so many 00:00:26.70\00:00:29.83 Southern schools, after that tragic war, it was 00:00:29.83\00:00:34.96 written off as dead by everyone. Everyone, 00:00:34.96\00:00:35.90 except its president. 00:00:35.90\00:00:44.06 >>ANNOUNCER: IT HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME... 00:00:56.30\00:01:00.80 GOD'S BOOK, THE BIBLE. 00:01:01.30\00:01:02.73 STILL RELEVANT IN TODAY'S COMPLEX WORLD. 00:01:03.00\00:01:06.83 IT IS WRITTEN . . . 00:01:07.13\00:01:09.40 SHARING MESSAGES OF HOPE AROUND THE WORLD. 00:01:09.66\00:01:14.33 President Ewell had given his best years to that 00:01:24.90\00:01:25.90 school, he had mortgaged his own farm to fund the 00:01:25.90\00:01:29.23 school - he refused to give up now. So, every 00:01:29.23\00:01:33.76 morning, President Ewell went to the deserted 00:01:33.76\00:01:34.70 campus, climbed the tower of its main building, and 00:01:34.70\00:01:39.73 rang the bells, calling the school to class. He 00:01:39.73\00:01:44.76 acted as if the school was still there. People 00:01:44.76\00:01:45.76 thought he was crazy. But for seven years, every 00:01:45.76\00:01:50.20 day, President Ewell rang the bells at William and 00:01:50.20\00:01:55.16 Mary, in defiance of the despair and hopelessness 00:01:55.16\00:01:56.23 that would destroy everything he held 00:01:56.23\00:02:01.00 valuable. And eventually, miraculously, it worked. 00:02:01.00\00:02:09.56 Others caught his vision. 00:02:09.56\00:02:10.23 Students, teachers, and money returned. Today, 00:02:10.23\00:02:12.16 America's second oldest university thrives again, 00:02:12.16\00:02:13.20 because of the hope of a magnificent dreamer. 00:02:13.20\00:02:22.20 One of the most visionary prophets of the Old 00:02:33.66\00:02:34.63 Testament was a priest named Ezekiel. He lived 00:02:34.63\00:02:39.90 about 2,600 years ago. 00:02:39.90\00:02:40.36 He witnessed the terrible siege of Jerusalem by 00:02:40.36\00:02:46.26 the Babylonians in which Jerusalem fell in 587 B.C. 00:02:46.26\00:02:52.26 He spent years in exile, along with other Jewish 00:02:52.26\00:02:53.26 leaders. There the hand of the Lord was upon him 00:02:53.26\00:02:58.76 to proclaim hope in a time of hopelessness. Ezekiel's 00:02:58.76\00:03:04.80 most remembered vision is the one before us today. 00:03:04.80\00:03:05.80 It is the vision of the dry bones. If you have a 00:03:05.80\00:03:10.73 Bible with you then open it to Ezekiel 37: 1 - 10 00:03:10.73\00:03:22.06 It is sad that the vast majority of those watching 00:05:10.33\00:05:11.50 me today can visualize a valley of dry bones. 00:05:11.50\00:05:16.36 Whether anyone in Ezekiel's day could 00:05:16.36\00:05:21.40 visualize that scene, I don't know, but I know we 00:05:21.40\00:05:22.43 can. We have all seen the pictures of the 00:05:22.43\00:05:27.50 mass graves at Auschwitz, Kosovo, northern Iraq and 00:05:27.50\00:05:31.30 Ruanda. The killing fields of Cambodia also come to 00:05:31.30\00:05:32.46 mind. We know what Ezekiel saw and we also know that 00:05:32.46\00:05:37.86 had someone asked us what Ezekiel was asked in verse 00:05:37.86\00:05:41.93 3 of chapter 37 - "can these bones live?" We know 00:05:41.93\00:05:43.06 what we'd say and we know that from just the human 00:05:43.06\00:05:50.03 side of things our answer would be a resounding, 00:05:50.03\00:05:55.46 "No!" A few years ago I toured the Dachau 00:05:55.46\00:05:56.36 concentration camp some 16 kilometres northwest of 00:05:56.36\00:06:02.63 Munich. Dachau was the first Nazi concentration 00:06:02.63\00:06:09.06 camp opened in Germany. It was built on the grounds 00:06:09.06\00:06:10.20 of an abandoned munitions factory. At this place as 00:06:10.20\00:06:15.86 you view the pictures and the video footage and as 00:06:15.86\00:06:24.56 you visit the gas chambers and the crematoriums 00:06:24.56\00:06:25.56 you feel this overwhelming sense of death and 00:06:25.56\00:06:30.06 hopelessness. "Can these bones live?" No, they 00:06:30.06\00:06:38.00 cannot. From our human side of things the bones 00:06:38.00\00:06:38.96 cannot live. From our human side of things death 00:06:38.96\00:06:44.66 is the end. We cannot bring anyone back. Even 00:06:44.66\00:06:49.30 with the wonders of today's medical technology 00:06:49.30\00:06:50.30 there is nothing that can be done for even a body 00:06:50.30\00:06:55.60 that has been dead for more than five or so 00:06:55.60\00:07:01.66 minutes, much less for a body as far gone as to be 00:07:01.66\00:07:02.66 a skeleton. Ezekiel saw skeletons--lots and lots 00:07:02.66\00:07:09.36 of them. These were people who did not receive burial 00:07:09.36\00:07:16.40 for some reason. The sheer number of bones seemed to 00:07:16.40\00:07:17.46 indicate some kind of mass carnage or catastrophe. 00:07:17.46\00:07:23.13 The dry condition of the bones lets Ezekiel know 00:07:23.13\00:07:29.00 that these people have been dead a long time. 00:07:29.00\00:07:29.96 "Can these bones live?" 00:07:29.96\00:07:35.13 These long-dead, dehydrated, 00:07:35.13\00:07:35.83 jumbled-together remnants of people who are long 00:07:35.83\00:07:41.23 gone from this earth? 00:07:41.23\00:07:41.70 No, they cannot. Verse 2 tells us that God gave 00:07:41.70\00:07:45.83 Ezekiel a pretty thorough tour of this terrible 00:07:45.83\00:07:56.90 place. They walked back and forth, through and 00:07:56.90\00:07:57.90 among the bones. Ezekiel saw no life. Can these 00:07:57.90\00:08:04.43 bones live? The question was ridiculous. So much so 00:08:04.43\00:08:11.70 that Ezekiel was savvy enough to realize that it 00:08:11.70\00:08:12.70 is more of a rhetorical question. Perhaps that is 00:08:12.70\00:08:19.63 why Ezekiel is bold enough to swat the ball back into 00:08:19.63\00:08:25.06 God's court. 00:08:25.06\00:08:27.46 In the face of such a scene of hopelessness, 00:08:34.83\00:08:35.76 we have no choice but to throw it back into God's 00:08:35.76\00:08:42.33 hands. We know the answer to the question insofar as 00:08:42.33\00:08:46.46 our human perspective and ability is concerned. If 00:08:46.46\00:08:47.56 there is more that can be said in this situation, 00:08:47.56\00:08:53.13 God will have to be the one to say it. If there is 00:08:53.13\00:08:57.83 anything to be done for these bones, God will have 00:08:57.83\00:08:58.90 to be the one to do it. 00:08:58.90\00:09:05.10 "Can these bones live?" 00:09:05.10\00:09:05.63 The suspense of faith is holding our collective 00:09:05.63\00:09:10.83 breath to see what God says in answer to his own 00:09:10.83\00:09:11.83 question. Today we live in a reasoned age where hope 00:09:11.83\00:09:24.26 is written off as fantasy. 00:09:24.26\00:09:24.80 Petty, no-risk hopes too easily become our stock 00:09:24.80\00:09:31.06 in trade, even for Christians. We hope it 00:09:31.06\00:09:35.06 doesn't rain on the church picnic, that the offering 00:09:35.06\00:09:36.23 will be enough to meet the bills. We're taught to be 00:09:36.23\00:09:39.50 practical and productive - levelheaded achievers. 00:09:39.50\00:09:45.90 This means setting our sights only on targets 00:09:45.90\00:09:46.96 we know we can hit. How different were God's 00:09:46.96\00:09:53.90 people in the Bible! Those children of God who hoped 00:09:53.90\00:09:58.40 for the most were rewarded the most. Abraham set off 00:09:58.40\00:09:59.46 across the desert for a Promised Land, sustained 00:09:59.46\00:10:06.76 only by the wild promise from God that his 00:10:06.76\00:10:10.36 descendants would be as numerous as the stars. 00:10:10.36\00:10:11.33 In the Gospels, countless blind, diseased, lame, and 00:10:11.33\00:10:16.56 grieving people came to Jesus with pained longing 00:10:16.56\00:10:22.50 in their eyes. Jesus never failed to heal them. The 00:10:22.50\00:10:23.53 leaders of God's church more recently were just as 00:10:23.53\00:10:29.46 expansive in their hopes. 00:10:29.46\00:10:29.96 Luther gave birth to a greatly revitalized 00:10:29.96\00:10:36.23 church because he sought a purified one. The Pilgrims 00:10:36.23\00:10:40.96 founded a Christian land because they envisioned a 00:10:40.96\00:10:41.96 free "nation under God." 00:10:41.96\00:10:46.60 Today integration and racial harmony are 00:10:46.60\00:10:47.60 expected in the United States because Martin 00:10:47.60\00:10:53.73 Luther King, Jr. and others dared to say, "I 00:10:53.73\00:10:59.03 have a dream". Our world craves open-hearted people 00:10:59.03\00:11:00.13 who dare to dream big. The elderly and the unemployed 00:11:00.13\00:11:10.26 - many of them watching right now - stare at the 00:11:10.26\00:11:14.16 dropping temperatures and no one knows how they 00:11:14.16\00:11:15.16 can pay for fuel. Seven million refugees of famine 00:11:15.16\00:11:23.66 sit huddled in relief camps in Africa and no one 00:11:23.66\00:11:28.06 knows how many can be saved. 00:11:28.06\00:11:31.36 In only one place can solutions be born - in 00:11:32.03\00:11:33.00 hope. A vision of the future, what we call hope, 00:11:33.00\00:11:38.70 is the greatest animating force we know. Notice, 00:11:38.70\00:11:45.26 though, to be realistic, hope must trust in a power 00:11:45.26\00:11:46.30 greater than the problem it faces. For many 00:11:46.30\00:11:53.20 problems of the world, there is only one power 00:11:53.20\00:11:57.83 great enough to encourage hope. That's why Ezekiel 00:11:57.83\00:11:58.83 was quick to put the ball back in God's court "O 00:11:58.83\00:12:04.60 Lord God - You know". No one else could perform 00:12:04.60\00:12:10.73 such a miracle. This kind of hope is more than just 00:12:10.73\00:12:11.76 wishful thinking. It is the absolute confidence 00:12:11.76\00:12:17.83 the future will be good because the future is 00:12:17.83\00:12:23.03 God's. To have high hopes is not to dream the 00:12:23.03\00:12:24.00 impossible dream. With God, all things are 00:12:24.00\00:12:31.86 possible Paul said. What is your valley today? Is 00:12:31.86\00:12:40.56 it that the cancer is relentless? Or your 00:12:40.56\00:12:41.46 marriage is dead. Do you feel your job is 00:12:41.46\00:12:49.23 pointless? Or your grief is deep? Are your days 00:12:49.23\00:12:53.30 difficult and your nights long? And we must respond 00:12:53.30\00:12:54.33 like Ezekiel did, "can these bones live?' 'I 00:12:54.33\00:13:02.10 don't know. Only you know, Lord; it's in your hands. 00:13:02.10\00:13:08.66 I don't know if there is any life left in these 00:13:08.66\00:13:09.66 bones, any hope remaining in this valley. If there 00:13:09.66\00:13:13.83 is any hope in the midst of the valley of dry 00:13:13.83\00:13:18.96 bones, Lord, it's in your hands.' It's all too much 00:13:18.96\00:13:20.00 for our small minds to comprehend. Don't count 00:13:20.00\00:13:26.13 God out simply because you can't recognize Him or 00:13:26.13\00:13:31.80 understand Him. He hasn't counted you out. Martin 00:13:31.80\00:13:32.83 Luther, in later life, suffered periods of 00:13:32.83\00:13:38.40 depression when he thought so often of his problems 00:13:38.40\00:13:45.30 that he forgot God's promises. One day he 00:13:45.30\00:13:46.20 seemed especially gloomy, so his wife dressed 00:13:46.20\00:13:53.96 herself in black mourning clothes. When Luther 00:13:53.96\00:13:59.90 demanded to know why she was in mourning, she said, 00:13:59.90\00:14:01.00 "I thought God died." 00:14:01.00\00:14:06.06 Luther got the message. 00:14:06.06\00:14:06.60 Ezekiel 37: 10 - 13 00:14:06.60\00:14:15.06 In verse 11 of this passage we hear God quote 00:15:12.06\00:15:13.03 a saying or a sentiment that had been circulating 00:15:13.03\00:15:18.46 among the exiles in Babylon. With Jerusalem 00:15:18.46\00:15:23.53 destroyed, the Temple in ruins, many of their 00:15:23.53\00:15:24.53 children and loved ones dead, it seemed to most 00:15:24.53\00:15:31.46 Israelites like the end of the world. So they'd 00:15:31.46\00:15:37.46 gather together in little clusters of lament and say 00:15:37.46\00:15:38.53 to one another, "Our bones are dried up! Our hope is 00:15:38.53\00:15:44.46 gone! We are cut off from all joy!" The Israelites 00:15:44.46\00:15:49.53 had become the living dead. Their spirits were 00:15:49.53\00:15:50.50 shriveled up within them. 00:15:50.50\00:15:55.43 What was next for Israel? 00:15:55.43\00:15:55.96 Out of this time of profound spiritual crisis 00:15:55.96\00:16:05.50 emerged the distinctive voice of the prophets. 00:16:05.50\00:16:06.63 The job of Ezekiel was to declare that God was not 00:16:06.63\00:16:12.83 undone by the catastrophe of recent days. Can these 00:16:12.83\00:16:19.30 bones live? No. Even if somehow sinew and tendon 00:16:19.30\00:16:20.40 and flesh could be put back onto them, as happens 00:16:20.40\00:16:30.00 in verses 7-8, can they breathe and be whole and 00:16:30.00\00:16:32.90 complete living souls again? No, not unless God, 00:16:32.90\00:16:33.93 as He did in the beginning with Adam and Eve, 00:16:33.93\00:16:41.70 personally blows the breath of life back into 00:16:41.70\00:16:46.23 their nostrils! It is all of God. I talk with a fair 00:16:46.23\00:16:47.30 number of people who have lost contact with God. 00:16:47.30\00:16:55.60 I understand that. If you think you've lost God, or 00:16:55.60\00:17:01.76 if you feel that you never had God - this is what I 00:17:01.76\00:17:02.80 want to say. Breathe. You have to anyway. 00:17:02.80\00:17:13.40 Take a breath. Take a deep breath. God is closer than 00:17:13.40\00:17:20.90 the air we breathe. I watched a two-year-old 00:17:20.90\00:17:21.86 once throw a temper tantrum. He screamed 00:17:21.86\00:17:30.76 to the top of his lungs. 00:17:30.76\00:17:31.33 When that didn't work, he decided to stop breathing. 00:17:31.33\00:17:37.76 His face turned red. 00:17:37.76\00:17:38.20 His lips turned blue. I wondered what his 00:17:38.20\00:17:43.86 mother would do. She did nothing. She knew he would 00:17:43.86\00:17:51.03 eventually breathe - and he did. I've thrown 00:17:51.03\00:17:52.00 my fair share of temper tantrums with God 00:17:52.00\00:18:02.70 - decided in anger or grief to stop breathing 00:18:02.70\00:18:07.56 spiritually. When God didn't respond the way I 00:18:07.56\00:18:08.66 wanted Him to, I concluded He was not there. But like 00:18:08.66\00:18:12.93 that mother, He is there all the time. He said, 00:18:12.93\00:18:17.60 you'll breathe again at the right time, in the 00:18:17.60\00:18:18.56 right way. When God first told young Abraham he 00:18:18.56\00:18:27.93 would be the father of nations, God never 00:18:27.93\00:18:33.73 mentioned Abraham would have to wait until he was 00:18:33.73\00:18:34.90 over 100 years old to have a son. When King Solomon 00:18:34.90\00:18:38.76 prayed to God for wisdom to rule, instead of 00:18:38.76\00:18:45.06 wealth, a delighted God gave him both. When 00:18:45.06\00:18:46.03 downtrodden Israel, under the Romans, prayed for a 00:18:46.03\00:18:52.10 Messiah to save them, no one dreamed he would be 00:18:52.10\00:18:56.16 born in a stable in Bethlehem. God will never 00:18:56.16\00:18:57.26 forsake our sincere hopes, but He seldom will give 00:18:57.26\00:19:05.40 us exactly what we expect. 00:19:05.40\00:19:05.93 Usually His gifts are grander but less 00:19:05.93\00:19:11.86 recognizable than we ever imagined. We hope for a 00:19:11.86\00:19:18.10 cure for an illness but, instead, uncover untapped 00:19:18.10\00:19:19.10 reserves of strength, love, and wisdom for 00:19:19.10\00:19:27.40 dealing with it. We hope for adequate rains and a 00:19:27.40\00:19:32.70 big harvest to end a famine but, instead, are 00:19:32.70\00:19:33.63 overwhelmed by donations to help the victims. We 00:19:33.63\00:19:38.43 hope for happiness through a comfortable lifestyle 00:19:38.43\00:19:44.83 but, instead, find joy in simple living. It's a 00:19:44.83\00:19:45.80 magnificent hope. It dares believe an unseen God 00:19:45.80\00:19:52.16 will enter our lives and influence our future. For 00:19:52.16\00:19:59.00 countless Christians it's been the only thing that 00:19:59.00\00:20:00.00 has pulled them through the pits of despair. The 00:20:00.00\00:20:05.66 philosopher Kierkegaard used to pray it this way: 00:20:05.66\00:20:12.76 Science or any other strictly human perspective 00:20:27.86\00:20:28.96 cannot extend us any hope. 00:20:28.96\00:20:34.23 Can these bones live? That is the burning question of 00:20:34.23\00:20:35.33 human life. In Ezekiel 37 it is God, however, who 00:20:35.33\00:20:44.70 asks the question and so Ezekiel turns the question 00:20:44.70\00:20:52.43 back on God, too. "You tell me, O God. Can these 00:20:52.43\00:20:53.43 bones live?" The answer of Immanuel, who is the 00:20:53.43\00:20:58.90 resurrection and the life, the alpha and the omega, 00:20:58.90\00:21:04.90 the great shepherd of the sheep and the firstborn 00:21:04.90\00:21:05.93 of all us dead and dying folks--his answer to this 00:21:05.93\00:21:12.13 question is simple, clear, and redolent of hope: Can 00:21:12.13\00:21:17.53 these bones live? Yes. 00:21:17.53\00:21:18.03 The Sovereign God in Jesus Christ our Lord has spoken 00:21:18.03\00:21:25.60 it. 00:21:25.60\00:21:29.16 I HEAR THE SOUND 00:21:37.46\00:21:40.10 OF A MIGHTY RUSHING WIND 00:21:40.40\00:21:48.13 AND IT'S CLOSER NOW 00:21:48.40\00:21:53.36 THAN IT'S EVER BEEN 00:21:53.60\00:22:00.06 I CAN ALMOST HEAR THE TRUMPET 00:22:00.36\00:22:06.86 AS GABRIEL SOUNDS THE CALL 00:22:07.13\00:22:15.26 AT THE MIDNIGHT CRY WE'LL BE GOING HOME. 00:22:15.56\00:22:27.06 WHEN JESUS STEPS OUT 00:22:27.43\00:22:33.90 ON A CLOUD TO CALL HIS CHILDREN 00:22:34.16\00:22:40.76 THE DEAD IN CHRIST SHALL RISE 00:22:41.03\00:22:47.53 TO MEET HIM IN THE AIR 00:22:47.80\00:22:54.16 AND THEN THOSE THAT REMAIN 00:22:54.43\00:23:01.03 SHALL BE QUICKLY CHANGED 00:23:01.36\00:23:09.43 AT THE MIDNIGHT CRY 00:23:09.73\00:23:14.56 WHEN JESUS COMES AGAIN 00:23:14.83\00:23:22.13 I LOOK AROUND ME 00:23:41.00\00:23:45.06 I SEE PROPHECIES FULFILLED 00:23:45.36\00:23:53.06 AND SIGNS OF THE TIMES 00:23:53.36\00:23:58.46 ARE APPEARING EVERYWHERE 00:23:58.73\00:24:05.06 I CAN ALMOST HEAR THE FATHER 00:24:05.40\00:24:11.63 AS HE SAYS 00:24:12.03\00:24:13.30 "SON GO GET MY CHILDREN." 00:24:13.70\00:24:19.73 AT THE MIDNIGHT CRY 00:24:20.20\00:24:25.23 THE BRIDE OF CHRIST WILL RISE. 00:24:25.50\00:24:31.80 WE WILL ARISE 00:24:32.40\00:24:35.30 WHEN JESUS STEPS OUT 00:24:35.56\00:24:38.70 ON A CLOUD TO CALL HIS CHILDREN 00:24:39.00\00:24:45.70 THE DEAD IN CHRIST SHALL RISE 00:24:46.06\00:24:52.36 TO MEET HIM IN THE AIR 00:24:52.66\00:24:59.13 AND THEN THOSE THAT REMAIN 00:24:59.43\00:25:05.83 SHALL BE QUICKLY CHANGED 00:25:06.10\00:25:14.43 AT THE MIDNIGHT CRY 00:25:14.80\00:25:19.30 WHEN JESUS COMES AGAIN 00:25:19.63\00:25:26.00 AND THEN THOSE THAT REMAIN 00:25:27.00\00:25:33.00 SHALL BE QUICKLY CHANGED 00:25:33.36\00:25:41.26 AT THE MIDNIGHT CRY 00:25:41.63\00:25:45.06 WHEN JESUS COMES AGAIN 00:25:46.33\00:25:54.70 AT THE MIDNIGHT CRY 00:25:55.06\00:25:59.76 WHEN JESUS COMES AGAIN 00:26:00.13\00:26:06.70 WHEN JESUS COMES AGAIN. 00:26:07.16\00:26:18.46 >>BILL: AS AN OFFER TO OUR VIEWERS, WE'D LIKE TO 00:26:22.76\00:26:23.76 SEND YOU THE BOOKLET "2012 DOOMSDAY OR DISTRACTION?" 00:26:23.76\00:26:26.86 IT IS A GIFT FROM IT IS WRITTEN TO YOU OUR VIEWER. 00:26:26.86\00:26:34.16 HERE'S THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO GET YOUR COPY. 00:26:34.16\00:26:38.56 LET ME THANK YOU FOR JOINING US HERE ON THE "IT 00:27:36.70\00:27:37.70 IS WRITTEN" PROGRAM.
