Let's say it's your wedding day. I want you to imagine that 00:01:59.48\00:02:05.05 everyone gathers together, everybody dresses really, really nice. And let's just say, for 00:02:05.15\00:02:11.73 example, that you got married and there were six bridesmaids - seven ladies all together. And 00:02:11.83\00:02:18.53 after the ceremony, after the pastor says, "What God has joined together, let no man put 00:02:18.63\00:02:23.41 asunder," all of that comes to the end, and after the wedding, you go to the reception, you 00:02:23.51\00:02:28.48 have wonderful cake, wonderful food, then it comes time to go home. And instead of taking your 00:02:28.58\00:02:35.02 bride, you take one of the bridesmaids home with you. Here's the question: How is your 00:02:35.12\00:02:41.09 new wife going to feel? She's probably not going to be your wife anymore! And how would your 00:02:41.19\00:02:47.76 new wife feel if, when she asked you, "Why did you go home with her?" And you said, "Well, I 00:02:47.86\00:02:55.64 mean, it's just one in seven. I mean, you all were there." I know this all sounds ridiculous, 00:02:55.74\00:03:01.84 but today in Christianity many are making these same arguments about a very special gift from 00:03:01.94\00:03:09.95 God to humanity. That gift was given at the beginning of time. 00:03:10.05\00:03:17.73 God reminded us of that gift, by writing it in His law. God's desire is that His law - His 00:03:19.89\00:03:26.17 desire is that we would have the law written in our hearts, because His law endures forever, 00:03:26.27\00:03:33.04 and He wants it to be in us forever. The fourth commandment, in Exodus chapter 20 verses 8 to 00:03:33.14\00:03:40.82 11, God begins the fourth commandment with what word.Remember God wrote the 00:03:40.92\00:03:50.66 word "remember." Why? Because looking down the centuries, he saw that man would forget the 00:03:50.76\00:03:57.33 Sabbath, and in particular, forget Him. You see, the instruction of God in Exodus 20 00:03:57.43\00:04:03.67 was: 00:04:03.77\00:04:05.24 The seventh day is the Sabbath. Now this may be a new idea or understanding for you. It was 00:04:13.98\00:04:21.26 new for me 20 years ago. And I'll tell you, as soon as I began to speak about the 00:04:21.36\00:04:27.40 Sabbath, for some people, flags go up. So if the flags have gone up in your mind, just bring them 00:04:27.50\00:04:34.10 down, and let's study together. What I will hear from many people is that we just need to 00:04:34.20\00:04:44.01 worship God one day in seven, it doesn't matter which one." Is that really what the Bible says? 00:04:44.11\00:04:53.52 The Bible continues on in Exodus 20: 00:04:53.62\00:04:58.13 Remember Revelation chapter 14, says this: 00:05:11.57\00:05:15.14 Exodus 20:8 through 11: 00:05:22.75\00:05:24.35 Revelation 14:7 says 00:05:27.89\00:05:29.29 Revelation chapter 14:7 is a direct quotation from Exodus chapter 20 verses 8 through 11. 00:05:34.93\00:05:43.81 The angel of Revelation 14 is pointing us back to the book of Exodus. And then, Exodus 20:8 to 00:05:43.91\00:05:52.98 11 is pointing us back to where? Genesis chapter 2. You see how the Bible works? We don't have 00:05:53.08\00:06:01.72 to go out looking around and researching and reading commentaries; the Bible makes 00:06:01.82\00:06:07.30 sense when we let the Bible interpret itself. You see, Revelation, the last book of the 00:06:07.40\00:06:14.94 Bible, points us back to Exodus, the second book of the Bible, and Exodus points us back to 00:06:15.04\00:06:20.68 Genesis, the first book of the Bible. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible's message 00:06:20.78\00:06:28.78 is the same all the way through. Although written over 1500 years apart, Moses and John were both 00:06:28.88\00:06:44.97 on the same page. Because they were inspired by the same Holy Spirit. Both testify to the 00:06:45.07\00:06:51.64 origin of the Seventh-day Sabbath as to the Creator 00:06:51.74\00:06:59.51 Himself. Some will say to me "But Sabbath is a Jewish thing." How many Jews were there in the 00:07:01.02\00:07:10.96 beginning when God rested, blessed, and sanctified the seventh day Sabbath? None. It 00:07:11.06\00:07:18.17 wasn't until centuries later that Abraham, the father of the Jews was born Who did God create 00:07:18.27\00:07:25.67 the Sabbath for? In Mark 2:27 Jesus says, 00:07:25.77\00:07:28.51 "Man" is translated from the Greek word "Anthropos" which also means "people". It does not 00:07:32.71\00:07:39.32 reference Jews in particular. The Bible speaks of the Sabbath in other places. Isaiah 58, 00:07:39.42\00:07:46.59 says? 00:07:46.70\00:07:47.76 Everyone is the operative word. It includes all people for all time. God promises a blessing on 00:07:51.50\00:07:58.54 all who keep the Sabbath. 00:07:58.64\00:08:02.68 The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week, given to Adam and Eve at creation, reminded to 00:08:04.95\00:08:10.22 Moses at the Ten Commandments. But what about Jesus? There are some people who have the idea 00:08:10.32\00:08:15.79 that Jesus changed the Sabbath. But, let's see. What did Jesus do? Luke 4:16 says: 00:08:15.89\00:08:25.70 Jesus gave additional insights into the Sabbath throughout His life and even in His death. By 00:08:37.38\00:08:43.85 studying a little deeper, we see that there are two components to Sabbath Rest: We rest in a 00:08:43.95\00:08:50.86 completed creation and we rest in a completed redemption. What do I mean by that? Remember, 00:08:50.96\00:08:59.73 Exodus 20 is a part of the fourth commandment which says: 00:08:59.83\00:09:08.71 God says, "Remember the Sabbath day," and then tells us why. Why? Because God created the 00:09:14.92\00:09:21.66 earth in six days. But then later in Deuteronomy chapter 5, God says something a little 00:09:21.76\00:09:29.06 different. Deuteronomy chapter 5, also the Sabbath commandment, 00:09:29.16\00:09:34.17 says this: Now, sometimes when people read those two commandments, they say, "Oh, 00:09:49.15\00:09:54.56 well, God changed the commandment." Did God change the commandment? No. Because see, in 00:09:54.66\00:10:05.57 Exodus, God called them back to creation. But in Deuteronomy chapter 5, God calls them back 00:10:05.67\00:10:12.27 to reflect upon what? Their redemption to come out of Egypt. Throughout the Scriptures, 00:10:12.37\00:10:19.08 especially in the book of Revelation, Egypt is representative of sin. God wants 00:10:19.18\00:10:26.09 us to remember the Sabbath both because He created us, and because He redeemed us. And 00:10:26.19\00:10:34.00 Jesus Himself said these words in John 14:15 00:10:34.10\00:10:38.07 We don't keep the commandments of God to be saved; we keep the commandments of God because we 00:10:42.40\00:10:46.61 are saved. In the signs of the times given by Jesus and referring to the destruction of 00:10:46.71\00:10:55.38 Jerusalem, in Matthew 24:20, Jesus says these words, 00:10:55.48\00:11:03.73 Why is this important? Jerusalem wasn't destroyed until 70 A.D. Which was approximately 00:11:08.66\00:11:16.07 40 years after Jesus was crucified. And so here's the question. If Jesus came to this 00:11:16.17\00:11:21.54 world to change the commandments, and in particular, change the Sabbath commandment, 00:11:21.64\00:11:26.41 why would He tell His disciples to specifically pray about not fleeing on the Sabbath if He was 00:11:26.51\00:11:34.12 going to change it? 00:11:34.22\00:11:35.86 When we go to the story of Jesus' crucifixion, we find something extraordinary, that 00:11:38.33\00:11:44.90 even in His death, Jesus kept the Sabbath. Luke 23 verse 54 through Luke 24 verse 1, 00:11:45.00\00:11:58.38 speaking of the day in which Jesus was crucified, The Bible 00:11:58.48\00:12:03.49 says, The women came to anoint the body of Jesus, but he Sabbath drew near and they would 00:12:19.70\00:12:23.44 not have time to anoint His body, so they waited until the Sabbath was over. They rested on 00:12:23.54\00:12:30.11 the Sabbath according to what? The commandment. The Bible goes 00:12:30.21\00:12:36.35 on to say: But did they find Jesus in the tomb? No, because He had risen from the dead. 00:12:46.36\00:12:55.50 Resurrection is commonly called Easter. And Easter is on Sunday, which is the first day of the 00:12:55.60\00:13:07.22 week. The Bible clearly outlines the week, you have Friday, the preparation day. We call that 00:13:07.32\00:13:12.85 Good Friday. That is the day in which Jesus was crucified. Then Jesus rests in the tomb on the 00:13:12.95\00:13:18.66 Sabbath day, or what we would call modern-day Saturday. And then Sunday, the first day of 00:13:18.76\00:13:25.13 the week, Jesus resurrected. Sixth day of the week, Friday, The preparation day.Seventh day 00:13:25.23\00:13:32.67 of the week, Saturday, the Sabbath day.Sunday, the first day of the week. Now, here's now 00:13:32.77\00:13:39.58 what some people will begin to talk to me about. They'll say, "But pastor, you don't 00:13:39.68\00:13:44.45 understand. Jesus changed the worship day from Saturday to Sunday."." The word "Sunday," 00:13:44.55\00:13:51.89 actually never appears in the Bible, because they didn't use those names. They used "first 00:13:51.99\00:13:57.00 day," "second day," "third day," so on and so forth. There are eight texts in the New Testament 00:13:57.10\00:14:02.67 that mention the first day of the week, which is Sunday, and not one of them - not one of 00:14:02.77\00:14:10.51 them - tells us to worship on Sunday, in honour of the resurrection. But that doesn't 00:14:10.61\00:14:17.19 mean that we ignore the resurrection and that we are not to celebrate it. Paul has given 00:14:17.29\00:14:25.79 us a beautiful picture of how we are to celebrate and actually live out the resurrection in our 00:14:25.89\00:14:33.00 own lives in Romans 6. We do not honour the resurrection by worshipping on Sunday. We honour 00:14:55.59\00:15:01.20 the resurrection by baptism. When someone is baptized, they are placed under the water. When 00:15:01.30\00:15:08.34 they are placed under the water, they are symbolically buried with Christ in death. Then when 00:15:08.44\00:15:13.54 they are raised, they are resurrected with Him to walk in the newness of life. You see, 00:15:13.64\00:15:20.95 the Bible gives a very clear path to how we honour the resurrection. We honour the 00:15:21.05\00:15:28.19 resurrection every time someone is baptized to walk in the newness of life with Jesus. 00:15:28.29\00:15:35.53 But here's another interesting point. In over 140 languages of the world, the word for the 00:15:38.43\00:15:43.91 seventh day is the word "Sabbath." Some will ask about a change in calendar. The Royal 00:15:44.01\00:15:56.02 Greenwich Observatory in Greenwich, England, wrote this: 00:15:56.12\00:16:02.29 Was the calendar changed in history? It was. We went from the Julian to the Gregorian 00:16:21.11\00:16:26.05 calendar, and here's what happened. October 1582, Thursday, October the 4th then 00:16:26.15\00:16:33.29 became Friday, October the 15th. Was there any change in the weekly cycle? There was no 00:16:33.39\00:16:40.10 change in the weekly cycle because we still went Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 00:16:40.20\00:16:44.40 Thursday, and Friday, and then Saturday, or the Sabbath. We didn't lose any days. The weekly 00:16:44.50\00:16:50.31 cycle was maintained. Friend, the Bible is quite clear. From creation to Moses, there was no 00:16:50.41\00:16:57.71 change in the Sabbath. From Moses to Jesus, there was no change in the Sabbath. And from 00:16:57.81\00:17:03.62 Jesus to the disciples and Jesus in His death, there was no change in the Sabbath. But then 00:17:03.72\00:17:11.19 in the early church there was no change, notice the apostle Paul in Acts 17:1 and 2: 00:17:11.29\00:17:22.44 Paul was preaching on Sabbaths. Acts 13:42 emphasizes 00:17:34.72\00:17:42.16 Just as it was the custom of Jesus to worship on the Sabbath day, to remember the Creator of 00:17:49.43\00:17:55.27 the heavens and the earth, so it was Paul's custom to also worship on the Sabbath day. Acts 00:17:55.37\00:18:01.24 13:44 records, on the next Sabbath, almost the whole city came together to hear the Word 00:18:01.34\00:18:07.52 of God. Notice these words from the apostolic constitutions: 00:18:07.62\00:18:15.69 Even the early church kept the Sabbath. The book of Revelation 00:18:31.17\00:18:35.81 says, Does it say, "Here are those that keep the nine commandments, the eight 00:18:43.25\00:18:50.79 commandments"? No, it says, "Here are they that keep the 00:18:50.89\00:18:56.06 commandments." Friends all of the commandments were inspired by God. All of those 00:18:57.57\00:19:01.70 commandments were written by God in stone. All of those commandments -Bible says that 00:19:01.80\00:19:09.01 God has written in our hearts. The Bible tells us that we'll keep the Sabbath in heaven. 00:19:10.38\00:19:15.12 Notice what the Bible says in Isaiah 66: 00:19:15.22\00:19:19.09 The Sabbath was given at creation. The Sabbath was reminded at the giving of the 00:19:35.90\00:19:42.04 Ten Commandments. Jesus kept the Sabbath. The apostles kept the Sabbath. And the Bible tells us 00:19:42.14\00:19:48.12 in Isaiah 66 that in heaven, we will keep the Sabbath as well. Jesus peering down time, knew 00:19:48.22\00:19:59.33 that His people would need a time to rest. He gave us the Sabbath not as a restriction, 00:19:59.43\00:20:04.57 but He gave us the Sabbath as something that we could look forward to. Matthew 12 says: 00:20:04.67\00:20:10.74 The son of man is also Lord of the Sabbath. Matthew, Mark, and Luke all testify that what day 00:20:15.41\00:20:21.78 is the Lord's day? The Sabbath day is the Lord's day. You see, even in the giving of the final 00:20:21.88\00:20:30.53 book of the Bible, God visits John on the Sabbath. Archelaus of Cascar in Mesopotamia wrote 00:20:30.63\00:20:38.30 these words: 00:20:38.40\00:20:39.80 The Sabbath of the creator God in Genesis is the Lord's day of Revelation. From Genesis to 00:20:50.58\00:20:55.32 Revelation, we don't need to wonder what day is God's day; the Bible is clear that the 00:20:55.42\00:21:02.12 Sabbath is God's day, because the Sabbath was given at creation. The Sabbath was given 00:21:02.22\00:21:08.06 at Sinai. The Sabbath was kept by his people throughout time. The Sabbath was kept by Jesus. 00:21:08.16\00:21:13.40 The Sabbath was honoured by the disciples. The Sabbath is a sign of God's power in our life, and 00:21:13.50\00:21:22.11 the Sabbath will be kept on the new earth. 00:21:22.21\00:21:26.08 And so as we explore these things, the question we must ask ourselves is this: If God's day 00:21:28.78\00:21:34.42 is the Sabbath, what's happening in the world? What's going on all around us?. "What about the 00:21:34.52\00:21:41.43 church I go to? Well, what about my parents, what about my grandparents?" And those are all 00:21:41.53\00:21:47.94 very important questions, and they're hard questions. But today, Jesus appeals to us and 00:21:48.04\00:21:55.81 He says, "I understand human tradition. But today, I want to call to you to move beyond human 00:21:55.91\00:22:03.45 tradition and explore what God's Word says and accept what God's Word says," because here is the 00:22:03.55\00:22:11.49 key piece. The greatest hoax of history is this: craftily, through time, the Sabbath was 00:22:11.59\00:22:22.40 slowly transitioned. And it was slowly transitioned away from God's day, the seventh-day 00:22:22.50\00:22:27.81 Sabbath, and done often in sincerity. We read in history, the early Christians, some of 00:22:27.91\00:22:35.65 them began transitioning away from worshipping on the Sabbath. And why did they reason to do 00:22:35.75\00:22:43.76 that? Because the Jews were suffering severe persecution under the Romans. And if you're 00:22:43.86\00:22:48.26 worshipping on the seventh-day Sabbath, that means you're worshipping on the same day as 00:22:48.36\00:22:51.47 the Jews. In fact, Christianity early on was considered a sect of Judaism. The Romans could 00:22:51.57\00:22:58.41 easily identify the Jews because they went to synagogue on the Sabbath. But the Christians also 00:22:58.51\00:23:03.71 went to the churches, to the synagogues, on Sabbath. And so under persecution, early 00:23:03.81\00:23:07.95 Christians began to worship on different days. And they did it in sincerity. But Jesus in the 00:23:08.05\00:23:16.79 Jerusalem factor is looking for more than just sincerity. He is looking for a people who are 00:23:16.89\00:23:25.90 looking up to heaven where He ministers on our behalf in the sanctuary. In the sanctuary they 00:23:26.00\00:23:31.47 see the One who loves them. They see the holy law of God in the ark located in the most holy 00:23:31.57\00:23:38.31 place of the sanctuary. And while the world has forgotten the Sabbath and forgotten the 00:23:38.41\00:23:44.69 Creator of the Sabbath and the Creator of humankind, moral decay is on the rise, society 00:23:44.79\00:23:51.83 has become more fractured and the love of many is growing cold. Today, Jesus stretches out 00:23:51.93\00:23:58.73 his hand and says it doesn't have to be that way. The solution to the problem is found 00:23:58.83\00:24:06.01 in the Jerusalem factor, as written in Hebrews 8:1-2, 00:24:06.11\00:24:09.44 And out of their love for this High Priest Jesus, they desire to be obedient to Him. God's 00:24:25.26\00:24:34.70 moral standard has never changed. The Sabbath isn't about working for our salvation, it's 00:24:34.80\00:24:41.91 about resting from our work, because we are saved. The Jerusalem Factor is this, Jesus 00:24:42.01\00:24:50.59 is in his Holy temple in heaven, we don't need to look to literal Jerusalem, but to the heavenly 00:24:50.69\00:24:57.73 Jerusalem. Jesus has gone to prepare a place for you in that Holy City.
