Certainly you remember the words. Two all beef patties, 00:01:59.35\00:02:04.82 special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles all on a sesame seed bun. That's right the infamous 00:02:04.92\00:02:11.16 Big Mac. Whatever your thoughts on a Big Mac may be, a study was done a few years ago called "The 00:02:11.26\00:02:20.04 Big Mac and the Ten Commandments." I won't ask how many of you have eaten a Big 00:02:20.14\00:02:24.84 Mac. That little jingle has stuck in the mind of millions for many years? You know, the 00:02:24.94\00:02:33.05 sad thing is that I haven't eaten a Big Mac in a long, long time. Yet, I am able to think of 00:02:33.15\00:02:39.79 the ingredients with relative ease. Here's the amazing thing, the survey that they took shows 00:02:39.89\00:02:47.03 that more people can name the seven ingredients in a McDonald's Big Mac than the Ten 00:02:47.13\00:02:53.34 Commandments. Prepare for yourself to be shocked. They surveyed 1,000 people, and it 00:02:53.44\00:02:59.84 showed that 80% of the people could name the sandwich's primary ingredient of two 00:02:59.94\00:03:05.98 all-beef patties, but less than 60% of the people recalled the commandment "Thou shalt not 00:03:06.08\00:03:11.32 kill." Let that sink in for a moment. They found 45% could recall the commandment "Honour 00:03:11.42\00:03:18.29 your father and mother," while 76% remembered the Big Mac ingredient lettuce. 75% knew 00:03:18.39\00:03:26.10 sesame seed bun. 66% knew special sauce. 62% knew pickles. 60% knew cheese. But don't miss 00:03:26.20\00:03:35.98 the point. All of those ingredients are more than the people could recall "Honour your 00:03:36.08\00:03:42.52 father and mother." It is remarkable that in this day and age, more people know that there 00:03:42.62\00:03:51.56 are pickles on a Big Mac than the commandment "Thou shalt not kill." What is happening in our 00:03:51.66\00:03:58.03 society? A society where more people know that a sesame seed bun is a part of the ingredients 00:03:58.13\00:04:04.91 of a sandwich from the golden arches than the commandment "Honour your father and your 00:04:05.01\00:04:09.54 mother." What's happening in our society? You see, something is going on in our society. We read 00:04:09.64\00:04:16.92 the newspaper, we watch the news, we read the internet. Lines are being blurred, and 00:04:17.02\00:04:23.83 moral standards which were once rock-solid are seemingly non-existent. It seems that our 00:04:23.93\00:04:31.30 society has turned its back on God's moral standards. If we look into the world of 00:04:31.40\00:04:40.71 entertainment, we find competing values. Many studies have been done on this. The average 00:04:40.81\00:04:46.75 18-year-old - let this sink in now - the average 18-year-old has witnessed 200,000 violent 00:04:46.85\00:04:55.69 acts on television and in the movies, including 40,000 murders. Let that sink in for a 00:04:55.79\00:05:02.46 moment. What does that do to the mindset, that someone witnesses violent acts and murder? It has 00:05:02.56\00:05:09.97 desensitized our society. And what we're seeing and that the research reveals is the Biblical 00:05:10.07\00:05:16.64 reality, that by beholding, we become changed. After you witness violent act after 00:05:16.75\00:05:24.25 violent act, murder after murder, it becomes much easier to pull the trigger. I'll never 00:05:24.35\00:05:31.33 forget when I was in high school, when we received news in my 11th-grade year, that one of 00:05:31.43\00:05:36.83 my classmates had been sitting in the back of a car, and someone approached their car, 00:05:36.93\00:05:42.34 whose hat was turned just the wrong way, whose shirt happened to be the wrong colour, whose 00:05:42.44\00:05:51.55 pants were rolled up on one side - the wrong side. And this classmate of mine, pulled out a 00:05:51.65\00:05:58.65 gun and killed this young man. Later he went to trial, was found guilty and was sentenced 00:05:58.75\00:06:05.29 to 65 years in prison. 00:06:05.39\00:06:09.86 And you think about this, this is what's happening in society. It's becoming easier to pull the 00:06:11.17\00:06:15.67 trigger, because if we're pulling the trigger in video games, how much easier is it? 00:06:15.77\00:06:20.41 When we're playing video games that are focussed with one primary goal - how many kills 00:06:20.51\00:06:26.05 can you achieve - it becomes much easier to do it in real life. Children who identify 00:06:26.15\00:06:32.09 with aggressive TV characters and perceive the violence to be realistic are most at risk for 00:06:32.19\00:06:38.16 later aggression, according to the American Psychological Association. In 2013, the Youth 00:06:38.26\00:06:45.43 Risk Behaviour Survey found this among high school students during the past - what does it 00:06:45.53\00:06:53.38 say? - 30 days: 35% of them drank alcohol. I would remind you, in high school, you're 00:06:53.48\00:06:57.78 under the age of 18. 21% binge drank; 10% drove while drinking alcohol; 22% rode with a driver 00:06:57.88\00:07:07.36 who had been drinking alcohol. You see, it's starting younger and younger and younger. Last 00:07:07.46\00:07:17.23 year, I went to Nunavut, and in Nunavut, we are doing a special project to bring Bibles in 00:07:17.33\00:07:21.77 Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit peopleand we're also working to build community 00:07:21.87\00:07:27.84 centres where churches can meet, but are used on a daily basis. However while I was there, I met 00:07:27.94\00:07:35.02 young people 8 and 9 years old, and this young man who was 8 years old, the first question he 00:07:35.12\00:07:43.43 asked me was not, what's my name, where are you from? The first question he asked me was, 00:07:43.53\00:07:51.87 "Do you use drugs?" Why did he ask me that question? Because he lived in a home where his 00:07:51.97\00:08:03.45 parents were doing drugs, drugs that they were obtaining from outsiders, workers, who were 00:08:03.55\00:08:07.68 bringing them in and selling them. Then the parents would buy the drugs and have no money for 00:08:07.78\00:08:14.39 food. And then the children could not eat. And then the children would steal the 00:08:14.49\00:08:18.09 parents' drugs. So you have eight-year-olds, this eight-year-old in particular, 00:08:18.19\00:08:22.86 who was regularly smoking marijuana. It's becoming younger and younger. Our society 00:08:22.96\00:08:29.90 seems to be in decay. One-third of teenagers report that they have used some illicit drug at 00:08:30.01\00:08:37.28 some point in their lives. According to some statistics 57% of all men, 54% of all women 00:08:37.38\00:08:45.45 report some type of marital infidelity. A more disturbing statistic is this, when asked 00:08:45.55\00:08:53.29 the question, would you have an affair if you never got caught? 74% of men said they would. 68% 00:08:53.40\00:09:00.64 of women said they would. What's happening in our society? What's going on? There is moral 00:09:00.74\00:09:09.78 decay in our society. Pornography is rampant. 00:09:09.88\00:09:16.42 When I was in school, and I had to preach on the seventh commandment - thou shalt not 00:09:18.12\00:09:25.73 commit adultery - and I was in a preaching class, and so you know, when you preach to 00:09:25.83\00:09:35.30 preachers, it's a little intimidating, but I wanted to make it relevant, so I started 00:09:35.40\00:09:42.08 doing research. And the research indicates that anywhere between 45 and 55% of all pastors have 00:09:42.18\00:09:48.92 some form of pornographic material on their computers at that very moment. By the way, 00:09:49.02\00:09:57.36 that's not to denigrate the pastors; that's to demonstrate the challenges we are facing in 00:09:57.46\00:10:03.20 the eroding moral situation in this country. You see, Proverbs 28:26 gives this little snippet, 00:10:03.30\00:10:12.67 but how powerful it is: 00:10:12.77\00:10:15.74 That's what's happening in our society. We see it all around. But today, we will look, because 00:10:25.12\00:10:32.53 this is not what God intended. You see the Jerusalem factor is all about turning our eyes 00:10:32.63\00:10:40.10 upward toward heaven and looking to the new Jerusalem. To the tabernacle made by God and not 00:10:40.20\00:10:46.94 man and seek to find answers the ever quickening moral decay or 00:10:47.04\00:10:56.52 our society. Let's step back in time, over 3,000 years ago, God wrote some things in stone, 00:10:58.05\00:11:04.93 that, if applied to the society in Canada, the society in all of North America, and the society 00:11:05.03\00:11:10.33 around the world for that matter.that would make a marked difference in what is happening 00:11:10.43\00:11:16.00 in society today. You see, Psalm 111 verses 7 to 9 says this: 00:11:16.10\00:11:26.18 How long? Forever and ever. That is powerful. You see, God wrote His precepts, which is 00:11:38.29\00:11:50.94 another word for laws or regulations. He wrote them, that they would stand forever. But 00:11:51.04\00:11:54.21 God's law is under attack. But you know, it is very interesting, the book of Daniel 00:11:54.31\00:12:00.12 actually predicts exactly what's happening in society, because there's an entity working to 00:12:00.22\00:12:09.52 actually tear down the law of God. We've read about it before in Daniel chapter 7 and 00:12:09.62\00:12:16.77 verse 25: 00:12:16.87\00:12:18.97 He [speaking of that little horn, religiopolitical power], 00:12:42.16\00:12:43.02 Whose law is he trying to change? God's law. So now we have this entity that's actually 00:12:47.73\00:12:49.33 trying to change the law. Additionally in Daniel 8:25 this little horn power is doing all 00:12:49.43\00:12:58.37 he can to undermine God's governance, it says: 00:12:58.47\00:13:03.75 Who's the Prince of princes? Jesus Christ Himself. But then interestingly enough, when you 00:13:19.46\00:13:27.84 go to Daniel chapter 11, this same little horn power is at it once again, and it says that he 00:13:27.94\00:13:34.01 shall turn in rage against the holy covenant. Whose covenant is the holy covenant? That's God's 00:13:34.11\00:13:40.92 covenant. You see, Daniel told us that at the end of time, when this little horn power would 00:13:41.02\00:13:48.06 rise, in the judgement hour, that this little horn power would actually work to change 00:13:48.16\00:13:53.43 the law, actually work against the law, actually work against the very name of God. 00:13:53.53\00:14:04.94 Why is this all important? Other than the obvious reason of the fact that the law of God is 00:14:06.27\00:14:11.81 the law of God. The book of Revelation says something very interesting about those who will 00:14:11.91\00:14:18.79 be on the earth during the time of the end. In Revelation chapter 12 and verse 17, it 00:14:18.89\00:14:27.10 talks about the dragon. Who is the dragon? It is Satan. He was enraged with the woman. In Bible 00:14:27.20\00:14:38.31 prophecy, a woman represents the church. And he went to make war with who? The rest of her 00:14:38.41\00:14:47.42 offspring. If you're reading from the King James Version, it says "the remnant of her Seed." 00:14:47.52\00:14:55.52 What is that talking about? That's talking about those who are God's people that are 00:14:55.62\00:15:01.50 leftover that look like the original intention of God's people. And how are they 00:15:01.60\00:15:06.67 defined? 00:15:06.77\00:15:11.91 You see, the book of Daniel talks about the law of God being attacked. The book of Revelation 00:15:21.85\00:15:26.39 says that God's people, at the end of time, will be keepers of the commandments of God. And 00:15:26.49\00:15:33.06 this is not just one isolated verse, by the way. Revelation 00:15:33.16\00:15:38.40 14:12 says: Please don't miss the point of these verses. They are two different verses that 00:15:51.71\00:15:56.52 describe what God's end-time people look like. Those who are on the earth, faithful to God, 00:15:56.62\00:16:03.43 awaiting the return of Jesus, both of these verses say they will be keeping the 00:16:03.53\00:16:10.27 commandments. And here's the amazing thing about the Ten Commandments. Even though the 00:16:10.37\00:16:14.80 Ten Commandments were written sometime about 3500 years ago, the Ten Commandments speak with 00:16:14.90\00:16:22.18 relevance and meaning to the 21st century. Now, let me clarify what I just said. God 00:16:22.28\00:16:29.15 wrote it in stone and gave it to Moses 3500 years ago. But we're going to see in our study, that 00:16:29.25\00:16:36.39 God's law has not existed only for 3500 years. The Bible says that God's law is eternal. 00:16:36.49\00:16:43.23 But look at these commandments. What would happen in society today? What would happen - and 00:16:45.43\00:16:53.07 let's not make it so big - what would happen in Calgary or Toronto or St John's or 00:16:53.17\00:17:00.12 Vancouver, what would happen in Canada, if no one placed any other God before the God of 00:17:00.22\00:17:08.52 heaven? Now, I'm not talking about forced religion. What if people placed God first in their 00:17:08.62\00:17:19.93 life? What would happen? What would happen if we lived in a society where people did not 00:17:20.04\00:17:24.17 worship idols? And by the way, when I speak of worshipping idols, don't say in your mind, 00:17:24.27\00:17:29.11 "Oh, I don't have any statues in my house." But idols being, "th worshipping people or events or 00:17:29.21\00:17:39.09 other things, and caring about those things more than I do about God." What would happen in 00:17:39.19\00:17:44.56 our society if the name of God was never taken in vain? You know, I travel a lot, and I'll 00:17:44.66\00:17:49.53 never forget, not too long ago, we were travelling at the same time, we were sitting in the 00:17:49.63\00:17:56.14 lounge waiting for our airplane, and there was a man across the way that - and I'm not being 00:17:56.24\00:18:02.54 judgemental of him, I'm simply making an observation - literally, not figuratively, 00:18:02.64\00:18:07.72 literally, every other word out of his mouth was a foul word. And I just sat there, and I 00:18:07.82\00:18:14.19 said, "You know, I think I'm going to turn my phone on and I'm going to record him, and 00:18:14.29\00:18:19.39 then when it's really quiet, I'm going to play it back really loud, so he can hear what he 00:18:19.49\00:18:24.63 sounds like. Now, I didn't do that, but imagine a society with 00:18:24.73\00:18:34.91 clean language. What would happen in a society that's overburdened, stressed, and full 00:18:36.44\00:18:42.75 of people who are suffering from anxiety, to remember what God said, that we should have one 00:18:42.85\00:18:50.29 day that is completely dedicated to God? What would happen in society if children honoured 00:18:50.39\00:18:57.20 their father and mother? By the way, let me expand upon that. What would happen in a society 00:18:57.30\00:19:03.77 that children honoured their father and mother because their father and mother were 00:19:03.87\00:19:10.25 honourable? But by the way, that's not a condition of the commandment. But what would 00:19:10.35\00:19:14.32 happen? What would happen in a society where no one killed each other? I'm going to tell you 00:19:14.42\00:19:19.19 what would happen in society. Every news outlet would go out of business. What would happen 00:19:19.29\00:19:25.06 in a society where there was no adultery? Where there was no adultery, no infidelity, ever? 00:19:25.16\00:19:30.33 What would happen in that society? What would happen in a society where no one stole 00:19:30.43\00:19:35.04 anything, where everyone honoured the realities of ownership? What would happen in 00:19:35.14\00:19:40.08 a society where no one lied, no one bore false witness against their neighbour? What would 00:19:40.18\00:19:44.85 happen in a society? What would happen in a society where no one coveted other people's stuff? 00:19:44.95\00:19:51.72 And I'm going to hit the pause button, because I want to be very clear in what I'm about to 00:19:51.82\00:20:00.96 say. I believe in God. I have given my life to Jesus Christ. But here's what I want to ask, 00:20:01.06\00:20:06.17 for the sceptic that may be watching or listening right now. Even if God did not exist, tell 00:20:06.27\00:20:20.58 me that God's laws would not make society a better place. Imagine for a moment - which I 00:20:20.68\00:20:27.39 don't believe - but imagine for a moment that God didn't exist, imagine for a moment that the 00:20:27.49\00:20:32.79 entirety of the Bible - which I do not believe - but imagine it was all just a fairytale - which 00:20:32.89\00:20:39.83 again I do not believe. But imagine that we lived, each one of us, lived our lives in 00:20:39.93\00:20:48.98 accordance with the Ten Commandments, and we got to the end of our life and found out 00:20:49.08\00:20:54.85 that Jesus really wasn't coming again. Would we be worse for the wear to live in such a way? 00:20:54.95\00:21:00.89 But here's the beauty of it all: God does exist. Jesus is coming soon. And Jesus is coming 00:21:04.36\00:21:09.86 to set up a kingdom that looks like that. And it's a beautiful thing. You see, God's law is the 00:21:09.96\00:21:19.01 very foundation of His throne. It's the foundation of His governance. And God's law is 00:21:19.11\00:21:24.51 eternal. It is the eternal moral standard which defines sin and establishes our accountability 00:21:24.61\00:21:33.22 to God. That is the Jerusalem factor. There exists an unchangeable moral standard for 00:21:33.32\00:21:42.96 all time. So I want you to notice now, we're going to try to understand why the law 00:21:43.06\00:21:48.87 exists, because there is a lot of discussion in Christianity about the law of God, with many 00:21:48.97\00:21:54.88 Christians ignoring the law of God. But 1 John 3:4 is very 00:21:54.98\00:22:02.28 clear. Other versions will say that sin is the transgression of the law. You see, sin is defined 00:22:15.93\00:22:23.04 by God's law. Sin is when we break God's law. How do we identify sin? How do we know 00:22:23.14\00:22:29.98 what sin is? God's law defines it for us. The beauty of that is, there's no floating 00:22:30.08\00:22:36.62 definition of what is sin. So that way there is no relativistic approach to moral 00:22:36.72\00:22:45.39 living, a what is sin for you is not sin for me, no, no, no. In God's law, what is sin, is sin 00:22:45.49\00:22:58.51 There is great beauty in God's law, because when you talk about God's law, some Christian 00:22:58.61\00:23:02.84 preachers will say, "That's very restrictive," but see, God's law is the pathway to freedom and 00:23:02.94\00:23:15.29 genuine happiness. Notice, James 2:12: 00:23:15.39\00:23:21.83 Do you want true freedom? Are you looking for liberty from those things that bind you down? 00:23:29.40\00:23:35.31 Come to Jesus. He is the one who authored the ten commandments. A moral standard of living that 00:23:35.41\00:23:44.12 leads to freedom and liberty. He gives us the enabling strength to abide by His word. There is 00:23:44.22\00:23:54.56 more to say about God's law and the Jerusalem Factor, but we are all out of time. Friend, let us 00:23:54.63\00:24:02.74 cling to Jesus, the Author and finisher of our faith who has given us a standard to live by. 00:24:02.84\00:24:11.25 Take my life, let it be 00:24:13.08\00:24:18.92 Consecrated, Lord, to Thee 00:24:19.62\00:24:25.09 Take my moments and my days 00:24:25.33\00:24:30.90 Let them flow in ceaseless praise 00:24:31.13\00:24:36.64 Let them flow in ceaseless praise 00:24:36.87\00:24:44.38 Take my hands, let them move 00:24:47.55\00:24:53.09 At the impulse of Thy love 00:24:53.32\00:24:58.86 Take my feet and let them be 00:24:59.16\00:25:05.10 Swift and beautiful for Thee 00:25:05.33\00:25:10.71 Swift and beautiful for Thee 00:25:10.97\00:25:17.71 I am yours, set apart for you 00:25:18.01\00:25:23.25 I am yours, hungry for your truth 00:25:23.75\00:25:29.16 Take my life, you are all I live for 00:25:29.52\00:25:35.16 I am yours 00:25:35.50\00:25:40.57 Take my voice, let me sing 00:25:42.64\00:25:48.08 Always only for my King 00:25:48.34\00:25:54.05 Take my lips and let them be 00:25:54.65\00:26:00.09 Filled with messages from Thee 00:26:00.76\00:26:06.23 Filled with messages from Thee 00:26:06.63\00:26:12.93 I am yours, set apart for you 00:26:13.30\00:26:18.64 I am yours, hungry for your truth 00:26:19.01\00:26:24.31 Take my life, you are all I live for 00:26:24.65\00:26:30.55 I am yours 00:26:31.09\00:26:36.26 Take my will and make it Thine 00:26:38.56\00:26:43.67 It shall be no longer mine 00:26:44.27\00:26:49.64 Take my heart, it is Thine own 00:26:50.17\00:26:55.81 It shall be Thy royal throne 00:26:56.41\00:27:01.95 It shall be Thy royal throne 00:27:02.32\00:27:07.99 I am yours, set apart for you 00:27:09.29\00:27:14.46 I am yours, hungry for your truth 00:27:14.96\00:27:20.27 Take my life, you are all I live for 00:27:20.60\00:27:26.41 I am yours, set apart for you 00:27:26.64\00:27:31.78 I am yours, hungry for your truth 00:27:32.11\00:27:37.15 Take my life, you are all I live for 00:27:37.75\00:27:43.39 I am yours 00:27:46.16\00:27:52.10 I am yours 00:27:52.63\00:27:56.40 I am yours 00:27:57.94\00:28:04.88 My dear friends much of Christianity has been confused on the role of God's law.
