¤[music ends]¤¤ 00:00:16.81\00:00:18.81 >>John Bradshaw: This is "It Is Written." 00:00:19.81\00:00:21.92 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:21.95\00:00:24.82 In 1962, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev 00:00:24.85\00:00:28.66 and Cuban leader Fidel Castro began preparing to locate 00:00:28.69\00:00:32.99 Soviet missiles in Cuba, just 100 miles from American soil. 00:00:33.03\00:00:38.80 That moment in history, the closest the Cold War came 00:00:38.83\00:00:42.44 to nuclear war, became known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. 00:00:42.47\00:00:47.54 We're going to look together at a modern-day crisis, 00:00:47.58\00:00:50.11 a global crisis, really, zero exaggeration. 00:00:50.15\00:00:54.08 And it's a crisis that's affecting you 00:00:54.12\00:00:55.85 and many of the people you know. 00:00:55.88\00:00:57.62 Thankfully, there's something you can do about it. 00:00:57.65\00:01:01.02 Now, let's start by looking at God's will for your life. 00:01:01.06\00:01:04.39 Third John, verse 2: 00:01:04.43\00:01:05.89 "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things 00:01:05.93\00:01:08.60 and be in health, just as your soul prospers." 00:01:08.63\00:01:12.50 God's will is that you experience good health, 00:01:12.53\00:01:15.57 physically and spiritually. 00:01:15.60\00:01:17.71 The two are connected. 00:01:17.74\00:01:19.47 Jesus said in John 10, verse 10, 00:01:19.51\00:01:21.41 "I am come that they might have life, 00:01:21.44\00:01:22.91 and that they might have it more abundantly." 00:01:22.94\00:01:25.35 That's God's plan for you: life more abundantly. 00:01:25.38\00:01:29.75 The Bible says, "You are the temple of God 00:01:29.78\00:01:32.29 and...the Spirit of God dwells in you." 00:01:32.32\00:01:35.69 Three chapters later: 00:01:35.72\00:01:36.76 "You were bought at a price; 00:01:36.79\00:01:38.86 "therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, 00:01:38.89\00:01:43.03 which are God's." 00:01:43.06\00:01:44.50 This is important, yet we are a long way 00:01:44.53\00:01:48.64 from where God wants us to be. 00:01:48.67\00:01:50.87 The reality is that in the Western world, 00:01:50.91\00:01:54.21 standards of health are plummeting, 00:01:54.24\00:01:57.61 and it doesn't need to be that way. 00:01:57.65\00:02:00.38 Many people are suffering from conditions and diseases 00:02:00.42\00:02:03.35 right now that they don't need to be suffering from, 00:02:03.39\00:02:06.65 conditions which, in many cases, can be reversed. 00:02:06.69\00:02:10.43 Even though the United States spends far more on health care 00:02:10.46\00:02:14.10 than any other developed country in the world, 00:02:14.13\00:02:16.90 health outcomes across the board are not good. 00:02:16.93\00:02:20.87 In 2023, life expectancy declined 00:02:20.90\00:02:25.34 to the lowest it's been in 20 years. 00:02:25.37\00:02:27.61 One expert from Harvard University said, 00:02:27.64\00:02:30.31 "The numbers are shocking." 00:02:30.35\00:02:32.65 But I want you to know there is something you can do about it. 00:02:32.68\00:02:36.69 It was found in 2018 that more than half of American adults 00:02:36.72\00:02:41.12 had at least one chronic health condition: 00:02:41.16\00:02:43.86 arthritis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and so on. 00:02:43.89\00:02:47.60 That's 129 million people. 00:02:47.66\00:02:50.07 More than a quarter have multiple chronic conditions. 00:02:50.10\00:02:54.30 Chronic disease consumes 86 percent 00:02:54.34\00:02:56.81 of U.S. spending on health care. 00:02:56.84\00:02:58.74 Close to half of all American children are dealing 00:02:58.77\00:03:02.21 with a chronic health issue, 00:03:02.24\00:03:04.55 25 percent of all children aged 2 through 8. 00:03:04.58\00:03:08.42 Now, you can have these conditions 00:03:08.45\00:03:10.52 through no fault of your own. 00:03:10.55\00:03:11.99 Sometimes there's nothing you can do about it. 00:03:12.02\00:03:14.76 But often you can do something about it, 00:03:14.79\00:03:18.06 and when you can, you should. 00:03:18.09\00:03:19.86 Illness is no one's first choice. 00:03:19.89\00:03:22.66 And this is not just a physical matter 00:03:22.70\00:03:24.60 but a spiritual matter also. 00:03:24.63\00:03:26.80 In the book of Daniel, Daniel and his friends chose 00:03:26.84\00:03:29.50 to honor God with their health, and, as a result, 00:03:29.54\00:03:33.04 they prospered spiritually. 00:03:33.07\00:03:35.68 So why are Americans in such poor shape? 00:03:35.71\00:03:39.01 I don't want to oversimplify, but let's connect some dots. 00:03:39.05\00:03:43.52 Ultraprocessed foods were the source of 67 percent 00:03:43.55\00:03:48.09 of the calories in kids' and teens' diets in 2018. 00:03:48.12\00:03:52.69 The diet of kids is usually high in fat, 00:03:52.73\00:03:55.26 added sugars, and salt. 00:03:55.30\00:03:56.53 And they often contain additives like colorings, 00:03:56.56\00:03:58.83 flavorings, emulsifiers, or hydrogenated oils 00:03:58.87\00:04:01.80 used to transform the texture, looks, and flavor of food. 00:04:01.84\00:04:06.81 Kids and teens in the U.S. 00:04:06.84\00:04:08.41 are getting the majority of their calories 00:04:08.44\00:04:10.65 from ultraprocessed foods like microwaveable meals, 00:04:10.68\00:04:14.52 packaged snacks, chips, cookies, candies, soda, 00:04:14.55\00:04:19.05 canned soups, and prepared foods like pizza, hot dogs, 00:04:19.09\00:04:22.16 burgers, and chicken nuggets. 00:04:22.19\00:04:24.46 At the same time, the consumption of unprocessed 00:04:24.49\00:04:28.50 or minimally processed foods is decreasing. 00:04:28.53\00:04:32.30 Reports in July of 2024 stated that "eating higher levels 00:04:32.33\00:04:36.27 "of ultraprocessed food may shorten lifespans 00:04:36.30\00:04:39.41 by more than 10%." 00:04:39.44\00:04:42.08 An investigator at the National Cancer Institute 00:04:42.11\00:04:44.41 in Bethesda, Maryland, said, 00:04:44.45\00:04:46.25 "Diet soft drinks were the key contributor 00:04:46.28\00:04:49.02 "to ultraprocessed food consumption. 00:04:49.05\00:04:51.62 The second one was sugary soft drinks." 00:04:51.65\00:04:55.39 Sit your kid down to a bowl of many breakfast cereals, 00:04:55.42\00:04:57.89 and in some cases your child is getting 00:04:57.93\00:05:00.63 more than five teaspoons of sugar in the cereal alone, 00:05:00.66\00:05:04.93 which is disastrous. 00:05:04.97\00:05:07.17 The human body wasn't made to deal 00:05:07.20\00:05:08.90 with such massive amounts of sugar. 00:05:08.94\00:05:11.27 A professor of cardiovascular medicine in London, England, 00:05:11.31\00:05:14.24 said, "Children quickly become used to the taste 00:05:14.28\00:05:17.41 "of high-sugar cereals and find healthier ones less palatable, 00:05:17.45\00:05:22.25 "which has long-term implications on their health. 00:05:22.28\00:05:25.45 "Eating too much sugar leads to weight gain, 00:05:25.49\00:05:28.29 "raising the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease 00:05:28.32\00:05:31.76 and some cancers." 00:05:31.79\00:05:33.50 A typical child's diet today 00:05:33.53\00:05:35.46 is nearly 70 percent processed foods, 00:05:35.50\00:05:38.80 and that trend is growing. 00:05:38.83\00:05:41.17 One headline said, 00:05:41.20\00:05:42.17 "If you think kids are eating mostly junk food, 00:05:42.20\00:05:45.14 a new study finds you are right." 00:05:45.17\00:05:48.14 Now, I want to say this: 00:05:48.18\00:05:49.28 I'm not on a crusade against junk food. 00:05:49.31\00:05:51.85 People like a treat; we know that. 00:05:51.88\00:05:54.52 No one wants the manufacture of sweet treats 00:05:54.55\00:05:57.42 to disappear entirely. 00:05:57.45\00:05:59.52 Problem is, many people don't make the connection 00:05:59.55\00:06:02.59 between their taste buds and their poor health, 00:06:02.62\00:06:05.69 and it's costing lives, lots of lives. 00:06:05.73\00:06:09.33 Two of the major challenges we're facing today 00:06:09.36\00:06:11.50 are diabetes and obesity, and the two are linked. 00:06:11.53\00:06:16.34 The CDC says that 74 percent of adults 20 or older 00:06:16.37\00:06:20.28 are overweight or obese. 00:06:20.31\00:06:23.11 That's three-quarters of all adults. 00:06:23.14\00:06:25.95 The NIH adds that nearly one in 10 U.S. adults 00:06:25.98\00:06:29.42 have severe obesity, and that more than 40 percent 00:06:29.45\00:06:32.75 of children are overweight or obese. 00:06:32.79\00:06:35.92 The numbers on diabetes are astonishing, but remember, 00:06:35.96\00:06:39.56 I'm going to tell you there is something you can do about. 00:06:39.59\00:06:43.70 Type 2 diabetes is when your blood sugar is too high. 00:06:43.73\00:06:47.87 Your pancreas makes insulin, which is what helps glucose 00:06:47.90\00:06:51.24 get into your cells to be used as energy. 00:06:51.27\00:06:53.98 If that process doesn't work right, 00:06:54.01\00:06:55.64 glucose stays in your blood and doesn't reach your cells. 00:06:55.68\00:06:59.81 Diabetes raises the risk for damage to your eyes, kidneys, 00:06:59.85\00:07:03.42 nerves, and heart. 00:07:03.45\00:07:05.19 It's not good. 00:07:05.22\00:07:07.19 And many people with diabetes have no idea they have it. 00:07:07.22\00:07:11.86 It's the eighth-leading cause of death in the United States, 00:07:11.89\00:07:15.66 and diagnosed diabetes costs 413 billion dollars a year, 00:07:15.70\00:07:21.47 as of 2022, up 80 billion dollars in the last 10 years. 00:07:21.50\00:07:27.68 One out of every four dollars spent on health care 00:07:27.71\00:07:32.08 is spent on diabetes. 00:07:32.11\00:07:34.75 It's the most expensive chronic condition in the United States. 00:07:34.78\00:07:39.12 Type 1 diabetes is where the pancreas 00:07:39.15\00:07:41.26 makes little or no insulin. 00:07:41.29\00:07:43.29 Only five to 10 percent of people with diabetes 00:07:43.32\00:07:45.83 have insulin-dependent diabetes. 00:07:45.86\00:07:48.16 But type 2 diabetes, which can be controlled, 00:07:48.20\00:07:52.17 can even be reversed. 00:07:52.20\00:07:54.67 Identify the causes and you may be able to reduce 00:07:54.70\00:07:59.14 or stop the problem. 00:07:59.17\00:08:01.61 So what can you do to fight 00:09:54.29\00:09:57.86 What do you do about diabetes? 00:09:57.89\00:09:59.83 First, you want to get tested 00:09:59.86\00:10:02.13 so you can be correctly diagnosed. 00:10:02.16\00:10:04.20 Then, enough fruit are at a greater risk 00:10:11.71\00:10:14.58 of developing type 2 diabetes. 00:10:14.61\00:10:17.01 You ought to talk with your doctor, and remember, 00:10:17.05\00:10:20.35 it is possible for many type 2 diabetics to get off insulin, 00:10:20.38\00:10:25.09 even after years of living with diabetes. 00:10:25.12\00:10:27.89 Experts say you should give yourself lots of nutrients 00:10:27.92\00:10:31.06 from a whole-food plant-based diet. 00:10:31.09\00:10:34.56 Whole grains, legumes, nuts, and vegetables--that's best. 00:10:34.60\00:10:39.70 If you can give your body a chance, 00:10:39.73\00:10:41.80 your body can often heal itself. 00:10:41.84\00:10:45.04 Processed food, especially meat, 00:10:45.07\00:10:47.64 is a key driver in developing diabetes. 00:10:47.68\00:10:50.65 In fact, the World Health Organization has said that 00:10:50.68\00:10:52.61 processed meats, bacon, salami, cold cuts are carcinogenic. 00:10:52.65\00:10:56.89 They increase your cancer risk. 00:10:56.92\00:10:59.22 In fact, the World Health Organization said, and I quote, 00:10:59.25\00:11:02.36 "The consumption of processed meat causes colorectal cancer." 00:11:02.39\00:11:07.46 With diabetes, something called "lipotoxicity" 00:11:07.50\00:11:10.90 causes mechanisms inside the cells in your body 00:11:10.93\00:11:14.30 to stop working efficiently. 00:11:14.34\00:11:16.30 It's not that eating a banana drives up your blood sugar; 00:11:16.34\00:11:20.18 it's that damage to your body's cells prevents them 00:11:20.21\00:11:23.48 from absorbing glucose. 00:11:23.51\00:11:25.71 Eating better is a huge help. 00:11:25.75\00:11:30.39 Another major key in treating diabetes is exercise. 00:11:30.42\00:11:35.02 If you're diabetic, taking a 30-minute 00:11:35.06\00:11:36.99 light-to-moderate walk after you eat 00:11:37.03\00:11:39.29 will have a huge impact on your underlying insulin resistance. 00:11:39.33\00:11:43.16 And getting exercise, in general, is essential. 00:11:43.20\00:11:47.17 For most people, that's simple. 00:11:47.20\00:11:49.57 Talk to your doctor and be prepared 00:11:49.60\00:11:51.81 to take charge of your health. 00:11:51.84\00:11:53.64 The problem is a lot of people 00:11:53.68\00:11:56.41 don't want to change the way they eat. 00:11:56.44\00:12:00.28 They don't want to take a walk. 00:12:00.32\00:12:03.12 But when you're dealing with your health 00:12:03.15\00:12:05.29 and with a condition that can do enormous damage, 00:12:05.32\00:12:08.52 this is not too much to ask. 00:12:08.56\00:12:11.49 Is it hard? No! 00:12:11.53\00:12:13.50 What's hard is having your foot amputated--that's hard. 00:12:13.53\00:12:18.40 What's hard is nerve damage. 00:12:18.43\00:12:20.74 What's hard is diabetic retinopathy, 00:12:20.77\00:12:23.41 which is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. 00:12:23.44\00:12:27.28 That's hard. 00:12:27.31\00:12:28.51 Eating better? Eating less? 00:12:28.54\00:12:30.95 Eating less junk? Eating less fat? 00:12:30.98\00:12:34.65 Taking a walk? No, that's not hard, not too hard. 00:12:34.68\00:12:40.89 And I'm going to tell you how you can make those changes. 00:12:40.92\00:12:44.29 Around one percent of adults in the late 1950s had diabetes. 00:12:44.33\00:12:48.86 Now, around 50 percent of Americans have diabetes 00:12:48.90\00:12:54.04 or prediabetes. So what's changed? 00:12:54.07\00:12:57.37 What has changed is what we eat 00:12:57.41\00:13:00.18 and the amount of exercise we get. 00:13:00.21\00:13:03.18 Now, it's true that our modern lifestyles have, in many cases, 00:13:03.21\00:13:06.98 shoehorned us into this. 00:13:07.02\00:13:08.98 When I was a kid we virtually never ate out. 00:13:09.02\00:13:11.19 We ate home-cooked meals, not much refined food. 00:13:11.22\00:13:14.26 We had a big garden, 00:13:14.29\00:13:15.56 ate a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. 00:13:15.59\00:13:17.73 We walked to school, walked to town. 00:13:17.76\00:13:20.13 Children rode their bikes everywhere. 00:13:20.16\00:13:22.66 We were involved in sport. 00:13:22.70\00:13:24.60 For most people today, life's just not like that, 00:13:24.63\00:13:27.37 and that's a challenge. 00:13:27.40\00:13:28.84 But if we don't figure this out--and we can figure it out-- 00:13:28.87\00:13:32.81 but if we don't, well, we know the result 00:13:32.84\00:13:36.11 because we're living the result right now. 00:13:36.14\00:13:39.78 Let's talk about a couple of other chronic health conditions. 00:13:39.81\00:13:43.18 The numbers are through the roof on fatty liver disease. 00:13:43.22\00:13:47.02 That's too much fat in your liver. 00:13:47.06\00:13:49.29 Your liver filters your blood, so if it's fatty, 00:13:49.32\00:13:53.03 many bodily processes are messed up. 00:13:53.06\00:13:56.63 One in four people aged 25 to 30 have fatty liver disease. 00:13:56.67\00:14:02.47 The reason? 00:14:02.50\00:14:03.84 High-fat diet, not enough exercise. 00:14:03.87\00:14:07.18 It's that simple. 00:14:07.21\00:14:09.11 Obesity in the United States has more than doubled 00:14:09.14\00:14:11.68 since the 1970s. 00:14:11.71\00:14:13.42 And that's a major reason why we're seeing 00:14:13.45\00:14:15.68 skyrocketing rates of disease. 00:14:15.72\00:14:18.79 Cancer rates are way up in people aged under 50. 00:14:18.82\00:14:23.63 New cases of breast cancer among women are way up. 00:14:23.66\00:14:28.03 One reason is alcohol, 00:14:28.06\00:14:30.60 responsible for 16 percent of all breast cancer cases. 00:14:30.63\00:14:35.74 Dr. Leana Wen says, 00:14:35.77\00:14:37.44 "Some researchers point to the escalating rates of obesity 00:14:37.47\00:14:40.88 "over the last few decades, 00:14:40.91\00:14:42.44 "which is associated with the risk of early-onset cancer. 00:14:42.48\00:14:45.91 "On a related note, the change in dietary habits, 00:14:45.95\00:14:50.22 "specifically the increase in consumption 00:14:50.25\00:14:53.09 "of ultra-processed food, and sedentary lifestyles 00:14:53.12\00:14:56.89 also are associated with higher cancer rates." 00:14:56.93\00:15:00.46 When Pete Rose, the famous baseball player, 00:15:00.50\00:15:02.73 died of heart disease, one news outlet reported 00:15:02.76\00:15:05.60 that "half of Americans over [the] age [of] 45" 00:15:05.63\00:15:08.87 have the same condition Rose had. 00:15:08.90\00:15:11.11 In July of 2024, a raft of media outlets reported 00:15:11.14\00:15:15.14 that "half of all...cancer deaths...could be avoided" 00:15:15.18\00:15:20.25 if people would only change certain modifiable risk factors. 00:15:20.28\00:15:24.02 Half of all cancers avoided! 00:15:24.05\00:15:28.36 Here's all we need to do to eliminate half of all cancers: 00:15:28.39\00:15:33.43 Don't smoke. Lose weight. 00:15:33.46\00:15:36.40 Eat better. Exercise. 00:15:36.43\00:15:39.20 Be careful about UV rays and avoid viruses such as HPV. 00:15:39.23\00:15:44.04 We can do this. And we must, 00:15:44.07\00:15:46.41 especially as cancer rates are expected to increase 77 percent 00:15:46.44\00:15:51.75 by 2050. 00:15:51.78\00:15:53.08 Now, I know for someone it's genetic. 00:15:53.11\00:15:54.85 For another there was an injury. 00:15:54.88\00:15:56.52 For some there's nothing you can do about it. 00:15:56.55\00:15:58.65 Some, that's understood. But that's not most people. 00:15:58.69\00:16:02.82 Most of us can make simple decisions 00:16:02.86\00:16:05.13 that will have a profound impact on our health. 00:16:05.16\00:16:08.23 Here's a headline for you that makes no sense, 00:16:08.26\00:16:11.50 but it's 100% accurate: 00:16:11.53\00:16:14.17 "US spends most on health care 00:16:14.20\00:16:17.21 "but has worst health outcomes 00:16:17.24\00:16:19.97 among high-income countries, new report finds." 00:16:20.01\00:16:23.28 In the United States health expenditure per person 00:16:23.31\00:16:26.25 is much higher than in other countries. 00:16:26.28\00:16:29.42 Yet overall, this does not lead to better outcomes. 00:16:29.45\00:16:34.82 In June of 2024, an ABC affiliate in Norfolk, Virginia, 00:16:34.86\00:16:38.66 reported on the food pyramid produced 00:16:38.69\00:16:40.93 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 00:16:40.96\00:16:43.10 originally intended to help people to be healthy. 00:16:43.13\00:16:45.83 It was abandoned in 2005 with good reason. 00:16:45.87\00:16:49.07 "Heading into the 21st century, 00:16:49.10\00:16:50.91 "obesity rates were on the rise. 00:16:50.94\00:16:53.11 "So much so, that the federal government decided to step in. 00:16:53.14\00:16:56.44 "The problem was that billions of dollars were on the line. 00:16:56.48\00:17:00.62 "...Lobbyists put pressure 00:17:00.65\00:17:02.58 "on the U.S. Department of Agriculture 00:17:02.62\00:17:05.32 "and adjustments were made accordingly. 00:17:05.35\00:17:07.66 "What was originally intended to be an official blueprint 00:17:07.69\00:17:10.33 "for [eating healthy] turned into a moneymaker 00:17:10.36\00:17:13.50 for the highest bidders in the food industry." 00:17:13.53\00:17:16.30 And it even goes a little deeper. 00:17:16.33\00:17:18.20 The NIH says out loud that "More than 2,500 chemical substances 00:17:18.23\00:17:24.64 "are intentionally added to foods to modify flavor, color, 00:17:24.67\00:17:29.64 "stability, texture, or cost. 00:17:29.68\00:17:32.28 "In addition, an estimated 12,000 substances 00:17:32.31\00:17:36.69 "are used in such a way that they may 00:17:36.72\00:17:38.89 unintentionally enter the food supply." 00:17:38.92\00:17:41.56 That's shocking. 00:17:41.59\00:17:42.86 If you thought this was bad, the truth is it gets worse. 00:17:42.89\00:17:47.50 But there is hope, and there is good news, 00:17:47.56\00:17:52.07 and I'll tell you more in just a moment. 00:17:52.10\00:17:54.90 ¤[upbeat music swells and ends]¤¤ 00:17:54.94\00:18:01.94 >>announcer: God wants the very best for us, 00:18:04.18\00:18:06.15 but at times that can be a challenge. 00:18:06.18\00:18:08.58 What can you do about obesity? 00:20:43.61\00:20:45.24 Knowing that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, 00:20:45.27\00:20:48.18 you can honor God with your body by reclaiming 00:20:48.21\00:20:51.18 what the devil has been robbing you of. 00:20:51.21\00:20:54.08 So, what do we do? 00:20:54.12\00:20:55.52 First, we want to eat better, less junk, less fat, 00:20:55.55\00:21:00.69 less sugar, less processed foods, 00:21:00.72\00:21:03.59 more fruit and vegetables. 00:21:03.63\00:21:05.69 Most people know the difference 00:21:05.73\00:21:06.96 between healthy and unhealthy food. 00:21:07.00\00:21:08.83 If you have to, start small, 00:21:08.86\00:21:10.93 but stick with it and grow in this. 00:21:10.97\00:21:13.54 Here's an easy one: ditch soda. 00:21:13.57\00:21:18.54 One can of your favorite soda 00:21:18.57\00:21:20.44 contains as much as eight teaspoons of sugar, 00:21:20.48\00:21:24.45 some a whole lot more, which is shocking. 00:21:24.48\00:21:28.38 Drink soda regularly and you're hurting yourself. 00:21:28.42\00:21:32.42 Drink water instead. 00:21:32.45\00:21:34.12 "But I don't want to." 00:21:34.16\00:21:35.62 Okay. So you're saying you're happy with fatty liver disease 00:21:35.66\00:21:38.36 and metabolic syndrome. 00:21:38.39\00:21:39.53 "But it's hard." Mm-mm. 00:21:39.56\00:21:41.56 A heart attack is hard. Cancer is hard. 00:21:41.60\00:21:44.47 Burying your spouse at 50 is hard. 00:21:44.50\00:21:48.57 Drinking water instead of sugar water? 00:21:48.60\00:21:51.91 Not hard. And it gets easier with practice. 00:21:51.94\00:21:54.91 A friend of mine, big tall guy, lost 70 pounds. 00:21:54.94\00:21:58.11 You couldn't help but see the change. 00:21:58.15\00:22:00.08 He told me, "All I did was stop drinking soda, 00:22:00.12\00:22:03.75 and I started walking." 00:22:03.79\00:22:05.35 That was it. 00:22:05.39\00:22:07.16 Also, you want to cut back on red meat. 00:22:07.19\00:22:09.02 In fact, cut back on meat. 00:22:09.06\00:22:11.06 The science is in: 00:22:11.09\00:22:12.83 Less meat and more plants is profoundly good for you. 00:22:12.86\00:22:17.77 Learn to live without as much dessert. 00:22:17.80\00:22:20.70 I'm not on a crusade against all things dessert, 00:22:20.74\00:22:23.07 by any means, but don't let it control you. 00:22:23.10\00:22:27.34 And don't think you need to accomplish every change 00:22:27.38\00:22:29.34 in one day, but start, watch your health improve, 00:22:29.38\00:22:34.42 and continue to make changes. 00:22:34.45\00:22:36.48 You may well find you need less medication, 00:22:36.52\00:22:38.72 meaning you might save a ton of money, 00:22:38.75\00:22:41.09 and your body will love you for it. 00:22:41.12\00:22:43.93 And remember exercise. 00:22:43.96\00:22:45.06 Get moving, take a walk, get your heart rate up, 00:22:45.09\00:22:48.60 ride a bike or a stationary bike, or swim or run. 00:22:48.63\00:22:52.17 Start somewhere and build from there. 00:22:52.20\00:22:54.70 You will love it. 00:22:54.74\00:22:57.07 A professor of cardiovascular medicine at Stanford University 00:22:57.11\00:22:59.81 says, "Exercise may be 00:22:59.84\00:23:02.21 the single most potent medical intervention ever known." 00:23:02.24\00:23:06.78 Dr. Euan Ashley says, exercise will improve any system 00:23:06.82\00:23:10.29 in your body and reduce your risk of disease in that system. 00:23:10.32\00:23:13.49 He says, "Exercise...really is the magic pill." 00:23:13.52\00:23:18.49 Exercise helps your brain function better. 00:23:18.53\00:23:20.90 After sin entered the world, God put Adam to work. 00:23:20.93\00:23:24.97 In order to be happy and holy, 00:23:25.00\00:23:26.67 Adam and Eve needed to be active. 00:23:26.70\00:23:29.60 People still need to be active. 00:23:29.64\00:23:31.44 Inactivity is killing people. 00:23:31.47\00:23:34.84 Improve your diet, get some exercise, 00:23:34.88\00:23:38.11 and you are on your way to better health. 00:23:38.15\00:23:42.52 So, how do we do this? 00:23:42.55\00:23:44.05 By leaning on God. 00:23:44.09\00:23:46.72 By asking God to do in you what you cannot do in yourself. 00:23:46.76\00:23:51.16 I know this can be a challenge. 00:23:51.19\00:23:53.06 Sometimes you're dealing with the habits of a lifetime. 00:23:53.09\00:23:56.23 So remember, the Bible says, 00:23:56.26\00:23:59.00 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." 00:23:59.03\00:24:03.10 Philippians 4:13. 00:24:03.14\00:24:04.91 "It is God who works in you both to will and to do 00:24:04.94\00:24:08.08 [of] His good pleasure." 00:24:08.11\00:24:09.08 Philippians 2:13. 00:24:09.11\00:24:10.98 "The Lord will perfect that which concerns me." 00:24:11.01\00:24:14.18 Psalm 138, verse 8. 00:24:14.22\00:24:16.48 You know that God can do this in the life of anyone 00:24:16.52\00:24:20.06 who wants to make changes to honor Him. 00:24:20.09\00:24:23.73 As Paul wrote, "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, 00:24:23.76\00:24:27.30 or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 00:24:27.30\00:24:32.10 You don't need to do anything rash or risky. 00:24:32.13\00:24:34.50 Do talk to your doctor, but plan to live like never before. 00:24:34.54\00:24:39.51 Switch up your eating habits, 00:24:39.54\00:24:41.04 get some exercise, eat better, 00:24:41.08\00:24:42.71 move more, and get good sleep. 00:24:42.74\00:24:45.41 Sleep is vital to good health. 00:24:45.45\00:24:47.98 And you're going to see your health take off. 00:24:48.02\00:24:50.92 And keep in mind weight doesn't come off quickly. 00:24:50.95\00:24:54.56 If it took years to add, it won't come off overnight. 00:24:54.59\00:24:58.39 But you'll start to see progress pretty soon. 00:24:58.43\00:25:02.36 What you don't need is another fad diet. 00:25:02.40\00:25:06.20 You don't need that. 00:25:06.23\00:25:07.40 Change your lifestyle, develop new attitudes toward food, 00:25:07.44\00:25:10.97 make exercise a part of your life, and over time, 00:25:11.01\00:25:14.28 you're going to reap the rewards: 00:25:14.31\00:25:16.88 more energy, less illness, less medication, a sharper mind. 00:25:16.91\00:25:21.75 And you'll know you're honoring God. 00:25:21.78\00:25:25.72 You know, sin entered the world via food. 00:25:25.75\00:25:29.72 Now, I hear people say, "You've got to die of something." 00:25:29.76\00:25:31.86 That's right, but you don't have to die of everything, 00:25:31.89\00:25:34.93 and there are a ton of illnesses 00:25:34.93\00:25:36.63 you simply do not need to die from. 00:25:36.67\00:25:39.70 Surrender your decisions to God, and you can expect 00:25:39.73\00:25:43.64 to experience more of His plans for you. 00:25:43.67\00:25:48.14 And one thing you're going to want to do is pray. 00:25:48.18\00:25:51.18 Pray for God's strength and power. 00:25:51.21\00:25:53.08 Pray for God to work in you. 00:25:53.11\00:25:54.75 Pray for strength to make good decisions. 00:25:54.78\00:25:57.55 And do more than pray; claim God's power. 00:25:57.59\00:26:00.86 Tell God you expect Him to work for you. 00:26:00.89\00:26:03.63 That promise, "I can do all things," 00:26:03.66\00:26:06.16 take it to God and claim it. 00:26:06.19\00:26:08.46 Tell Him you are believing that will happen in your life. 00:26:08.50\00:26:11.77 Keep this before God, and don't get discouraged. 00:26:11.80\00:26:15.30 If you stumble, go again. 00:26:15.34\00:26:17.71 You'll grow in this. Be patient with yourself. 00:26:17.74\00:26:21.11 Remember God is gracious, and watch God do big things for you. 00:26:21.14\00:26:26.82 This is important. 00:26:26.85\00:26:28.35 We're dying when we should be living. 00:26:28.38\00:26:32.15 But Jesus came to this world to give you life more abundantly. 00:26:32.19\00:26:37.79 Let me pray for you. 00:26:37.83\00:26:39.13 Father in heaven, thank You that You have created us 00:26:39.16\00:26:41.10 to be the temple of the Holy Spirit, 00:26:41.13\00:26:43.77 a place where heaven itself would dwell. 00:26:43.80\00:26:46.74 Thank You that Jesus promises to live His life in us. 00:26:46.77\00:26:49.40 Now I pray that we will keep our bodies 00:26:49.44\00:26:52.37 as the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:26:52.41\00:26:55.34 Give us grace now, Lord. 00:26:55.38\00:26:56.44 So many of us are suffering from illnesses 00:26:56.48\00:26:58.85 that we can reverse. 00:26:58.88\00:27:00.48 So many of us are right now in battles 00:27:00.52\00:27:02.82 against difficult situations that we can do something about 00:27:02.85\00:27:06.79 by taking simple measures. 00:27:06.82\00:27:08.96 And then perhaps all of us are in great danger of stumbling 00:27:08.99\00:27:13.73 into lifestyle illnesses and sicknesses and diseases 00:27:13.76\00:27:18.37 that we could otherwise avoid if we make good decisions. 00:27:18.40\00:27:23.54 Now, for each of us this is going to look 00:27:23.57\00:27:25.11 a little bit different, but I pray You'll bring to our hearts 00:27:25.14\00:27:27.68 and minds right now that which we can do, right now, 00:27:27.71\00:27:31.08 to get onto the pathway to better health 00:27:31.11\00:27:33.42 and honoring You more fully with our lives. 00:27:33.45\00:27:36.08 We thank You. 00:27:36.12\00:27:37.42 We thank You for less illness, for less disease, 00:27:37.45\00:27:40.36 for less medication, and for more of the presence of Jesus. 00:27:40.39\00:27:44.76 And we pray in Jesus' name, amen. 00:27:44.79\00:27:49.30 Thank you so much for joining me. 00:27:49.33\00:27:50.77 I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time. 00:27:50.80\00:27:52.47 Until then, remember: 00:27:52.50\00:27:54.27 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:27:54.30\00:27:58.11 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 00:27:58.14\00:28:02.11 ¤[dramatic, triumphant theme music]¤ 00:28:02.14\00:28:06.15 ¤[music ends]¤¤ 00:28:26.84\00:28:28.84
