¤[music ends]¤¤ 00:00:16.64\00:00:18.65 >>John Bradshaw: This is "It Is Written." 00:00:19.58\00:00:21.22 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:21.25\00:00:23.79 If it's anything at all, the Bible is a missionary book. 00:00:23.82\00:00:27.52 Most Bibles have a section in the back 00:00:27.56\00:00:29.52 showing Paul's missionary journeys. 00:00:29.56\00:00:31.86 The first, Paul and Barnabas left Antioch, went to Cyprus, 00:00:31.89\00:00:35.36 then Asia Minor, what today we call Turkey. 00:00:35.40\00:00:39.00 On his second missionary journey, Paul traveled 00:00:39.03\00:00:41.80 from Antioch, which is in southern Turkey 00:00:41.84\00:00:44.57 near the border with Syria, 00:00:44.61\00:00:46.37 sailed across the northeastern Aegean to Greece, 00:00:46.41\00:00:48.68 then went to Philippi and Berea, down to Athens, 00:00:48.71\00:00:51.11 over to Corinth, then back across the sea to Ephesus 00:00:51.15\00:00:54.75 before crossing the Mediterranean to Israel, 00:00:54.78\00:00:57.52 then back to Antioch. 00:00:57.55\00:00:59.82 His third missionary journey covered similar ground. 00:00:59.85\00:01:03.09 But, of course, Paul was a missionary. 00:01:03.12\00:01:05.43 Shortly after his Damascus road experience, 00:01:05.46\00:01:07.86 God spoke to Ananias about Paul and said, 00:01:07.93\00:01:10.83 "He is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name 00:01:10.87\00:01:13.90 before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel." 00:01:13.94\00:01:17.97 God placed His hand upon Paul 00:01:18.01\00:01:20.01 for the purpose of him being a missionary. 00:01:20.04\00:01:22.71 But isn't that the way? 00:01:22.74\00:01:24.18 The question isn't, "Does God call people to mission service?" 00:01:24.21\00:01:27.48 We know the answer to that already. Yes, He does. 00:01:27.52\00:01:30.42 The question is, "How do I make that real in my life?" 00:01:30.45\00:01:34.99 The woman at the well, she encountered Jesus 00:01:35.02\00:01:37.43 and immediately went into the city 00:01:37.46\00:01:39.19 and told people about Jesus. 00:01:39.23\00:01:41.66 She was so focused on telling others 00:01:41.70\00:01:43.47 that she left her water pot behind. 00:01:43.50\00:01:46.00 The demon-possessed man in Decapolis, 00:01:46.03\00:01:47.67 who was delivered by Jesus, 00:01:47.70\00:01:49.30 asked Jesus if he could follow Jesus. 00:01:49.34\00:01:52.14 But Jesus sent him to his home to tell others 00:01:52.17\00:01:55.11 what God had done for him. 00:01:55.14\00:01:57.18 And the man did that work, with the Bible saying 00:01:57.21\00:01:59.61 at the conclusion of that story in Luke's gospel, 00:01:59.65\00:02:02.85 "And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, 00:02:02.88\00:02:06.22 "the people gladly received Him: 00:02:06.25\00:02:08.59 for they were all waiting for Him." 00:02:08.62\00:02:10.83 Converted, and a missionary right away. 00:02:10.86\00:02:14.10 The disciples-- missionary workers-- 00:02:14.10\00:02:16.20 it's believed Thomas, "doubting Thomas," 00:02:16.23\00:02:18.83 was the first missionary to India. 00:02:18.87\00:02:21.10 There have been some famous missionaries down through time. 00:02:21.14\00:02:23.81 David Livingstone from Scotland, 00:02:23.84\00:02:25.41 the missionary to Africa and an abolitionist, 00:02:25.44\00:02:28.51 whose work was so impactful he became a national hero 00:02:28.54\00:02:32.01 back in Britain and was buried in Westminster Abbey. 00:02:32.05\00:02:36.15 Can you imagine a missionary 00:02:36.18\00:02:37.22 being buried in Westminster Abbey today? 00:02:37.25\00:02:39.82 William Carey, considered the father of modern missions, 00:02:39.85\00:02:43.16 he founded the Baptist Missionary Society 00:02:43.19\00:02:45.36 and was a missionary to India. 00:02:45.39\00:02:47.83 Adoniram Judson, an American, who spent 40 years in Burma; 00:02:47.86\00:02:51.83 Hudson Taylor, who spent more than 50 years in China; 00:02:51.87\00:02:55.64 Eric Liddell, the rugby-playing, 00:02:55.67\00:02:57.67 Olympic gold-medal- winning Scotsman, 00:02:57.71\00:03:00.31 who was portrayed in the award-winning movie 00:03:00.34\00:03:02.24 "Chariots of Fire," he was a missionary to China. 00:03:02.28\00:03:05.71 John Paton, another Scotsman, 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.75 was a missionary to what was then the New Hebrides. 00:03:07.78\00:03:11.52 Before going he was warned that cannibals might eat him. 00:03:11.55\00:03:15.19 His response? 00:03:15.22\00:03:16.56 "It [doesn't matter] to me [if my body is] eaten...by worms" 00:03:16.59\00:03:20.13 or "by cannibals." 00:03:20.16\00:03:21.66 He didn't die, but his wife and newborn son did, 00:03:21.70\00:03:24.77 less than a year after they arrived. 00:03:24.80\00:03:26.53 And life was difficult for missionaries back in that day-- 00:03:26.57\00:03:29.87 before creature comforts and before telephones, 00:03:29.90\00:03:31.87 before the internet. 00:03:31.91\00:03:33.41 Illness was a huge challenge, and so was isolation. 00:03:33.44\00:03:37.11 If you were to read the account of Paton's father 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.35 farewelling his son, ooh, it's heartrending. 00:03:39.38\00:03:43.59 At It Is Written we are committed to missions. 00:03:43.62\00:03:47.09 Some years ago I took a team of physicians and others with me 00:03:47.12\00:03:50.19 to a foreign country, and It Is Written Missions was born. 00:03:50.23\00:03:54.23 Since then we've been to numerous countries, 00:03:54.30\00:03:56.26 as well as locations within the United States, 00:03:56.30\00:03:59.33 for the purpose of investing in people's lives 00:03:59.37\00:04:01.37 and sharing the love of God and the message of the Bible. 00:04:01.40\00:04:05.71 Joining me is Wes Peppers, 00:04:05.74\00:04:07.48 who coordinates It Is Written Missions. 00:04:07.51\00:04:10.31 So, Wes, why missions? Why should we do it? 00:04:10.35\00:04:14.15 >>Wes Peppers: Well, firstly, the Bible says to do missions. 00:04:14.18\00:04:16.48 Jesus said, "Go [into all the world] 00:04:16.52\00:04:17.99 and make disciples of all nations." 00:04:18.02\00:04:19.82 And so, that's one reason we do it, 00:04:19.85\00:04:21.46 'cause it's a biblical mandate and Jesus commanded it. 00:04:21.49\00:04:24.09 But really, the second reason 00:04:24.13\00:04:25.59 is because it changes lives. >>John: Whose lives? 00:04:25.63\00:04:28.36 >>Wes: It changes everybody's life. 00:04:28.40\00:04:29.86 You know, a lot of times people think when they go 00:04:29.90\00:04:31.53 on a mission trip, "Well, I'm gonna go down there. 00:04:31.57\00:04:33.54 "We're gonna go as a group, 00:04:33.57\00:04:34.80 and we're gonna impact all these people." 00:04:34.84\00:04:36.47 But really, the lives of the people who do the mission trip 00:04:36.50\00:04:39.37 are transformed as well. >>John: What have you seen? 00:04:39.41\00:04:41.51 You've led numerous mission trips. 00:04:41.54\00:04:43.18 You don't lead all of the It Is Written Missions trips, 00:04:43.21\00:04:45.05 and neither of us go on all of them; 00:04:45.08\00:04:46.61 we just go on one or two here and there. 00:04:46.65\00:04:49.45 Um, but in the many mission trips that you've been part of 00:04:49.48\00:04:52.02 and that you've led, what kind of change 00:04:52.05\00:04:54.12 do you see in people's lives? 00:04:54.16\00:04:55.32 >>Wes: You know, it's, it's amazing to see 00:04:55.36\00:04:57.46 the lives of people transformed. 00:04:57.49\00:04:59.23 They go there, they have an impact, 00:04:59.26\00:05:01.06 they see God work miracles, 00:05:01.10\00:05:02.63 and every day they're having daily devotions. 00:05:02.66\00:05:04.93 They're reaching out and touching those individuals 00:05:04.97\00:05:07.54 in the medical clinics. 00:05:07.57\00:05:09.04 They're building churches, knowing that people 00:05:09.07\00:05:11.51 are gonna be worshiping in those churches very soon. 00:05:11.54\00:05:14.64 They're preaching evangelistic meetings, and they're hearing 00:05:14.68\00:05:17.18 the Word of God being preached right from their own mouth, 00:05:17.21\00:05:20.35 and it is just transformative. And their lives are changed. 00:05:20.38\00:05:23.12 >>John: Yeah. Now, we were both in Ethiopia 00:05:23.15\00:05:26.19 together with a large mission team: 00:05:26.22\00:05:28.39 physicians and dentists and a wide variety of people. 00:05:28.42\00:05:34.30 And it was a, a challenging place in some certain respects, 00:05:34.36\00:05:37.93 but God did great things. 00:05:37.97\00:05:40.87 I want you to take a look at this. 00:05:40.90\00:05:42.97 It Is Written Missions impacts 00:05:43.00\00:05:44.87 some of the most remote locations on the globe. 00:05:44.91\00:05:47.54 A team of volunteers recently answered the call to serve 00:05:47.58\00:05:50.71 in Ethiopia, the second-most populous country in Africa. 00:05:50.75\00:05:56.18 Ethiopia's average annual income is only $900, 00:05:56.22\00:06:00.09 meaning many people endure hardships that deprive them 00:06:00.12\00:06:03.32 of many of life's necessities. 00:06:03.36\00:06:06.06 Over two weeks the It Is Written team brought help and hope 00:06:06.09\00:06:09.16 to thousands who have little. 00:06:09.20\00:06:11.20 Medical and dental clinics took place in three locations. 00:06:11.23\00:06:14.54 Partnering with a general hospital, health care 00:06:14.57\00:06:17.14 and education were provided to more than 15,000 people, 00:06:17.17\00:06:21.01 most of whom would not have been able to find help elsewhere. 00:06:21.04\00:06:24.45 Emergency surgeries saved many lives. 00:06:24.48\00:06:27.85 One Muslim patient said, 00:06:27.88\00:06:29.25 "I thought the world had forgotten about Ethiopia, 00:06:29.28\00:06:31.92 "but the Christian God sent you to reveal His love to us. 00:06:31.95\00:06:35.62 I want to follow your Jesus." 00:06:35.66\00:06:38.03 God miraculously sped up procedures that normally take 00:06:38.06\00:06:41.13 two to three times longer, 00:06:41.16\00:06:42.86 enabling more patients to be seen. 00:06:42.90\00:06:45.00 The team of selfless volunteers worked long days and nights 00:06:45.03\00:06:49.10 to ensure that all could get the care they needed. 00:06:49.14\00:06:52.37 Almost every patient welcomed the offered prayer 00:06:52.41\00:06:55.41 that accompanied treatment. Many even requested prayer. 00:06:55.44\00:06:59.75 Two thousand years after Philip the apostle 00:06:59.78\00:07:02.05 baptized the Ethiopian eunuch, 00:07:02.08\00:07:04.52 the gospel is still saving lives in Ethiopia. 00:07:04.55\00:07:07.99 Over 7,000 people attended meetings 00:07:08.02\00:07:10.46 to hear the Word of God, more than had ever attended 00:07:10.49\00:07:13.80 in any of the meeting locations before. 00:07:13.83\00:07:16.97 The gospel penetrated hearts 00:07:17.00\00:07:18.80 even in the secular city of Addis Ababa. 00:07:18.83\00:07:21.67 As the Word of God was preached, 00:07:21.70\00:07:23.54 appeals were made, and hundreds responded, 00:07:23.57\00:07:26.14 accepting Jesus and the message of the Bible. 00:07:26.17\00:07:30.21 More than 3,500 people were baptized, 00:07:30.25\00:07:33.72 every name entered into the Book of Life. 00:07:33.75\00:07:37.32 Before his baptism, one man said, "All my life I was Muslim. 00:07:37.35\00:07:42.56 Today, I follow Jesus." 00:07:42.59\00:07:45.43 God is using It Is Written Missions to bring the gospel 00:07:45.46\00:07:48.60 to the farthest parts of the globe. 00:07:48.63\00:07:51.33 Because of your prayers and support, 00:07:51.37\00:07:53.44 thousands and thousands will experience eternity with Jesus. 00:07:53.47\00:07:58.64 Thank you for giving healing to the sick, love to the unloved, 00:07:58.67\00:08:02.41 and hope to the hopeless. 00:08:02.44\00:08:04.78 You know, I remember one lady there 00:08:07.32\00:08:08.75 who was connected with by our medical evangelists, 00:08:08.78\00:08:13.19 our medical missionaries before we got there. 00:08:13.22\00:08:16.32 She was very ill. Long story short, she was unable to walk 00:08:16.36\00:08:20.23 because she was an elderly lady, mid-to-late 80s. 00:08:20.26\00:08:23.73 She started to attend the church. 00:08:23.77\00:08:25.40 "But, boy, do I join this church, or do I remain Orthodox? 00:08:25.43\00:08:29.04 "What do I do? I'm hearing truth. 00:08:29.07\00:08:30.67 I'm seeing Jesus like never before." 00:08:30.71\00:08:33.11 She prayed a prayer, and her prayer was, 00:08:33.14\00:08:35.84 "Lord, if You want me to be part of this new church, 00:08:35.88\00:08:38.78 You have to heal me." 00:08:38.81\00:08:40.05 That was a big prayer, not a small prayer. 00:08:40.08\00:08:43.12 The next morning she wakes up. 00:08:43.15\00:08:45.12 She's able to walk; she's able to feed herself; 00:08:45.15\00:08:48.79 she's no longer dependent on anybody. 00:08:48.82\00:08:51.13 It was an out-and-out miracle. 00:08:51.16\00:08:54.40 I met the lady. She was baptized in Addis Ababa 00:08:54.46\00:08:57.33 while I was there. She has a smile that if you could 00:08:57.37\00:09:00.17 just connect it to the grid, it would power an entire city. 00:09:00.20\00:09:03.24 So you see miracles like that--you say, 00:09:03.27\00:09:04.71 "I want to be part of mission work." 00:09:04.74\00:09:06.74 >>Wes: Awesome stuff.
