¤[music ends]¤¤ 00:00:17.15\00:00:19.15 >>John Bradshaw: This is "It Is Written." 00:00:21.28\00:00:23.25 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:23.28\00:00:25.82 They are incredible things. 00:00:25.85\00:00:28.36 Basically, everything that grows began as one of these 00:00:28.39\00:00:32.89 or maybe as one of these 00:00:32.93\00:00:35.10 or could be as one of these. 00:00:35.13\00:00:38.83 They can be very small. They can be very large. 00:00:38.87\00:00:42.57 They're as old as time itself. 00:00:42.60\00:00:45.77 They show up for the first time in the Bible 00:00:45.81\00:00:48.14 on the first page of the Bible. 00:00:48.18\00:00:50.48 They were here before humans, before animals and birds. 00:00:50.51\00:00:54.15 They were here before the sun. 00:00:54.18\00:00:57.72 Genesis, chapter 1 says, 00:00:57.75\00:00:59.15 "God said, 'Let the earth bring forth grass, 00:00:59.19\00:01:02.69 "'the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields 00:01:02.72\00:01:05.59 "'fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, 00:01:05.63\00:01:09.26 "on the earth'; and it was so. 00:01:09.30\00:01:11.47 "And the earth brought forth grass, 00:01:11.50\00:01:12.93 "the herb that yields seed according to its kind, 00:01:12.97\00:01:15.77 "and the tree that yields fruit, 00:01:15.80\00:01:17.67 "whose seed is in itself according to its kind. 00:01:17.71\00:01:20.51 And God saw that it was good." 00:01:20.54\00:01:23.35 Seeds--they're absolutely vital to life itself. 00:01:23.38\00:01:27.88 No seeds? No crops. 00:01:27.92\00:01:29.62 No crops? No harvest. 00:01:29.65\00:01:31.35 No harvest? No food. 00:01:31.39\00:01:33.36 No food? No life. 00:01:33.39\00:01:35.89 So, in each one of these little miracles is potentially life. 00:01:35.92\00:01:41.63 It's not an exaggeration to say that you owe your life to them. 00:01:41.66\00:01:45.30 Take them away and the human race is done. 00:01:45.33\00:01:49.14 There's no lab on the planet that has figured out 00:01:49.17\00:01:52.47 how to preserve life without seeds. 00:01:52.51\00:01:55.84 This one grows wheat, from which we derive flour, 00:01:55.88\00:01:59.85 out of which we produce bread and tortillas and pasta 00:01:59.88\00:02:04.75 and cookies and cakes and pies and pancakes. 00:02:04.79\00:02:08.42 That's just from this. 00:02:08.46\00:02:11.93 This one? Corn. 00:02:11.96\00:02:13.90 Of course, you could just eat corn on the cob or creamed corn 00:02:13.93\00:02:16.80 or corn on a salad of some kind. 00:02:16.83\00:02:19.10 But corn becomes tortillas and cornbread and popcorn 00:02:19.13\00:02:23.20 and grits--I'm in the South, remember. 00:02:23.24\00:02:25.37 There's corn starch, masa, mealie meal in Africa. 00:02:25.41\00:02:29.74 Now, somewhere here you might start to differentiate 00:02:29.78\00:02:32.35 between corn and maize, but they are essentially the same thing. 00:02:32.38\00:02:36.48 And then there's corn chips and nachos and tacos 00:02:36.52\00:02:39.25 and quesadilla, and there's corn dogs and hushpuppies-- 00:02:39.29\00:02:43.29 and corn flakes and so many other breakfast cereals. 00:02:43.32\00:02:47.13 And then you've got corn syrup and corn oil. 00:02:47.20\00:02:50.87 And as well as feeding corn to humans and animals, 00:02:50.90\00:02:53.90 as corn is a staple in animal feed, it's also fed to vehicles. 00:02:53.94\00:02:59.77 This seed can end up being used to produce ethanol-- 00:02:59.81\00:03:03.28 ethyl alcohol, a biofuel. 00:03:03.31\00:03:06.08 In many parts of the United States you'll see signs 00:03:06.11\00:03:08.32 at gas stations telling you that the fuel you're putting 00:03:08.35\00:03:10.69 in your vehicle is 10 percent ethanol. 00:03:10.72\00:03:14.06 Now, that's all from this one seed. 00:03:14.09\00:03:18.23 Now, there's one more I have to show you: this one. 00:03:18.26\00:03:20.73 When harvested, it can be boiled or fried. 00:03:20.76\00:03:25.30 You can eat it brown or white, the difference being 00:03:25.33\00:03:27.87 that white rice has had the bran and the germ removed. 00:03:27.90\00:03:31.91 It's incredibly versatile. 00:03:31.94\00:03:33.91 It can be made into milk, noodles, pasta, bread, 00:03:33.94\00:03:38.18 meaning that, like corn, it's often a go-to for those 00:03:38.21\00:03:40.95 who are gluten free. 00:03:40.98\00:03:42.58 It's a staple for half the population of the world. 00:03:42.62\00:03:46.62 It might become nasi goreng in Indonesia, 00:03:46.65\00:03:49.49 or nasi lemak in Malaysia, 00:03:49.52\00:03:51.59 or pilaf in the Middle East or Europe, 00:03:51.63\00:03:54.03 or sushi in Japan, 00:03:54.10\00:03:55.56 or bibimbap in South Korea, 00:03:55.60\00:03:57.80 or jambalaya in Louisiana, 00:03:57.83\00:04:00.07 or biryani in India. 00:04:00.10\00:04:02.57 And if we were to discuss beans, same thing, 00:04:02.60\00:04:06.37 they're incredibly versatile, enjoyed the world over, 00:04:06.41\00:04:10.48 incredibly good for you, better than most people realize. 00:04:10.51\00:04:13.52 They're inexpensive and grown from a seed. 00:04:13.55\00:04:18.02 Or to make it even more interesting, 00:04:18.05\00:04:19.85 the bean itself is a seed. 00:04:19.89\00:04:23.43 Now, there's a lot we can learn from seeds. 00:04:23.46\00:04:26.09 Jesus Himself used the humble seed 00:04:26.13\00:04:29.16 as an important teaching tool. 00:04:29.20\00:04:31.67 In fact, in one chapter alone, 00:04:31.70\00:04:33.50 Jesus taught three different parables 00:04:33.54\00:04:36.00 using seeds as His teaching aid. 00:04:36.04\00:04:38.01 That chapter is Matthew, chapter 13: 00:04:38.04\00:04:41.11 "On the same day Jesus went out of the house 00:04:41.14\00:04:43.61 and sat by the sea." 00:04:43.65\00:04:45.05 Jesus is at the north end of the Sea of Galilee 00:04:45.08\00:04:47.25 in Capernaum or, or very close to it. 00:04:47.28\00:04:49.75 "And great multitudes were gathered together to Him, 00:04:49.78\00:04:52.55 "so that He got into a boat and sat; 00:04:52.59\00:04:55.46 "and the whole multitude stood on the shore. 00:04:55.49\00:04:58.73 "Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, 00:04:58.76\00:05:03.10 'Behold, a sower went out to sow.'" 00:05:03.13\00:05:06.03 Even today you can look up from where Jesus would have been; 00:05:06.07\00:05:09.20 you can see plants or crops being grown on the hills 00:05:09.24\00:05:12.11 just beyond the sea itself. 00:05:12.14\00:05:14.41 You can imagine Jesus motioning towards a farmer of some kind, 00:05:14.44\00:05:18.11 a man growing crops, a man sowing seeds. 00:05:18.15\00:05:21.32 The seed would land in the earth, and so would begin 00:05:21.35\00:05:24.52 that remarkable process of germination and growth 00:05:24.55\00:05:28.92 and then the tending of the crop and the production of the crop 00:05:28.96\00:05:31.93 and ultimately harvest-- 00:05:31.96\00:05:33.80 and an income or food stored for the use of the family. 00:05:33.83\00:05:38.50 Now, this is the parable where Jesus speaks of seed 00:05:38.53\00:05:41.24 falling into different soil 00:05:41.27\00:05:43.47 and how that affected the viability of the plant. 00:05:43.51\00:05:46.54 Jesus talks of seed falling "by the wayside" 00:05:46.57\00:05:49.24 and being eaten by birds. 00:05:49.28\00:05:51.28 "Some fell on stony places, 00:05:51.31\00:05:53.01 "where they did not have much earth; 00:05:53.05\00:05:55.32 "and they immediately sprang up 00:05:55.35\00:05:57.19 "because they had no depth of earth. 00:05:57.22\00:05:59.39 "But when the sun was up they were scorched, 00:05:59.42\00:06:01.99 and because they had no root they withered away." 00:06:02.02\00:06:05.16 Some of the seed landed where there were thorns, 00:06:05.19\00:06:07.00 and those thorns grew up and choked the plants, 00:06:07.03\00:06:09.66 and they had no future. 00:06:09.70\00:06:11.53 "But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: 00:06:11.57\00:06:15.37 some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty." 00:06:15.40\00:06:19.51 And you'll notice Jesus says, 00:06:19.54\00:06:21.84 "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" 00:06:21.88\00:06:25.41 This was an important lesson, one that impacted eternal life. 00:06:25.45\00:06:30.92 And Jesus elected the humble seed to be His object lesson. 00:06:30.95\00:06:35.29 Then later in the chapter, Jesus again talks about seeds. 00:06:35.32\00:06:38.26 "Another parable He put forth to them, saying: 00:06:38.29\00:06:41.10 "'The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, 00:06:41.13\00:06:44.33 "'which a man took and sowed in his field, 00:06:44.37\00:06:47.34 "'which indeed is the least of all...seeds; You could ruin someone's crop. 00:23:57.97\00:24:00.80 You could ruin somebody's livelihood that way. 00:24:00.84\00:24:03.97 The man's grain sprouted and grew, 00:24:04.01\00:24:06.11 and the weeds grew up among the grain. 00:24:06.14\00:24:09.21 In that area at that time, there was a darnel 00:24:09.24\00:24:11.51 that looked so much like wheat 00:24:11.55\00:24:13.35 you couldn't tell them apart until they'd matured, 00:24:13.38\00:24:16.52 and by then, you had havoc in your field. 00:24:16.55\00:24:20.42 The owner of the field said, "An enemy has done this." 00:24:20.46\00:24:24.79 So it's possible, it seems, for others to sow in your field, 00:24:24.83\00:24:28.90 to sow negativity in your life. 00:24:28.93\00:24:31.33 And, of course, we know that the enemy in this story 00:24:31.37\00:24:33.87 is the devil. 00:24:33.90\00:24:35.44 The devil will sow doubt, unbelief, lack of faith, 00:24:35.47\00:24:40.64 discouragement. 00:24:40.68\00:24:41.64 ¤[soft music]¤ 00:24:41.68\00:24:42.84 You don't want to let that happen, and you don't have to. 00:24:42.88\00:24:46.41 When you've made a decision that Jesus has your life, 00:24:46.45\00:24:50.25 your heart, your loyalty, 00:24:50.29\00:24:53.12 and if you'll renew that decision every day, 00:24:53.15\00:24:56.02 you'll keep the enemy from sowing damaging seeds 00:24:56.06\00:24:59.36 in your field. Sure, things will happen. 00:24:59.39\00:25:01.73 This is life we're living, not a game we're playing. 00:25:01.76\00:25:04.97 But in all of life's ups and downs, 00:25:05.00\00:25:07.47 you can choose to trust God, to stay grounded in the Word, 00:25:07.50\00:25:11.41 and to keep up your connection with God. 00:25:11.44\00:25:13.44 There'll be efforts made to derail your faith. 00:25:13.48\00:25:16.44 An enemy has done this. 00:25:16.48\00:25:18.65 Sometimes it'll be a person having a bad day, 00:25:18.68\00:25:21.18 and you're bearing the brunt of that. 00:25:21.22\00:25:23.42 An enemy has done this. 00:25:23.45\00:25:25.65 Illness, grief, loss, disappointment-- 00:25:25.69\00:25:30.53 an enemy has done this. 00:25:30.56\00:25:32.76 But even in the midst of that, 00:25:32.79\00:25:35.73 God will give you "beauty for ashes, 00:25:35.76\00:25:38.43 "the oil of joy for mourning, 00:25:38.47\00:25:41.40 "the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; 00:25:41.44\00:25:44.77 "[so] that [you] might be called trees of righteousness, 00:25:44.81\00:25:48.11 the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified." 00:25:48.14\00:25:53.55 Remember, you reap what you sow. 00:25:53.58\00:25:56.99 Sow to the flesh, and you reap corruption. 00:25:57.02\00:26:01.02 Sow to the Spirit, 00:26:01.06\00:26:02.79 and of the Spirit you'll reap everlasting life. 00:26:02.82\00:26:06.90 ¤[music ends]¤¤ 00:26:06.93\00:26:07.93 >>Announcer: Today's free offer 00:26:08.60\00:26:10.13 is "Victorious: Living a New Life in Jesus." 00:26:10.17\00:26:13.03 You'll learn how to move beyond the mistakes of yesterday 00:26:13.07\00:26:15.37 to experience victory today. 00:26:15.40\00:26:17.14 To receive "Victorious: Living a New Life in Jesus," 00:26:17.17\00:26:19.81 call 800-253-3000 right now. 00:26:19.84\00:26:22.88 That's 800-253-3000 00:26:22.91\00:26:25.58 or visit us online at iiwoffer.com. 00:26:25.61\00:26:28.82 Get this free resource now 00:26:28.85\00:26:30.52 and enter into the life of victory God wants for you. 00:26:30.55\00:26:33.36 800-253-3000 or iiwoffer.com. 00:26:33.39\00:26:37.79 >>John: Let me pray for you now.
