Nothing much goes on here. 00:00:23.42\00:00:27.66 We're just beyond the edge of town. 00:00:27.69\00:00:29.66 That road you see back there is the A421. 00:00:29.69\00:00:32.59 It crosses south 00:00:46.74\00:00:51.08 that one of history's most read authors was born. 00:00:51.11\00:00:54.92 The book he wrote 350 years ago has never been out of print. 00:00:54.95\00:00:59.32 It sold more than 250 million copies. 00:00:59.35\00:01:03.06 That's more than any other novel in the English language by far. 00:01:03.09\00:01:07.96 John Bunyan was born here in 1628. 00:01:08.00\00:01:11.77 During his almost 60 years on this earth, he preached, 00:01:11.80\00:01:15.70 spent a fifth of his life in prison, 00:01:15.74\00:01:19.64 and wrote the literary and spiritual masterpiece 00:01:19.67\00:01:22.98 "The Pilgrim's Progress." 00:01:23.01\00:01:24.98 ¤[pensive orchestral music]¤ 00:01:25.01\00:01:27.75 [waves crashing] 00:01:27.78\00:01:29.48 Bunyan's day was a challenging time to be a believer in Jesus-- 00:01:37.13\00:01:41.20 that is, if you had deep spiritual convictions 00:01:41.23\00:01:43.70 and you dared to live them. 00:01:43.73\00:01:45.47 The English state was closely bound together 00:01:45.50\00:01:48.00 with the English church. 00:01:48.04\00:01:49.94 Although Catholicism had at times been the ruling church 00:01:49.97\00:01:53.01 in England, when Bunyan was born, 00:01:53.04\00:01:55.48 the monarch, Charles I, was a Protestant. 00:01:55.51\00:01:58.58 The Act of Uniformity made the Church of England 00:01:58.61\00:02:01.15 the established church 70 years before Bunyan was born. 00:02:01.18\00:02:05.32 Yet England was not a bastion of religious liberty. 00:02:05.35\00:02:08.92 Remember, the "Mayflower" sailed from England only eight years 00:02:08.96\00:02:12.23 before Bunyan was born. 00:02:12.26\00:02:14.36 You were free to be a Protestant 00:02:14.36\00:02:16.56 as long as you were the right kind of Protestant. 00:02:16.60\00:02:19.77 John Bunyan wasn't the right kind of Protestant. 00:02:19.80\00:02:23.91 He started life as a bad kid, 00:02:23.94\00:02:26.84 didn't do well in school 00:02:26.88\00:02:28.24 and wasn't only a troublemaker but a ringleader. 00:02:28.28\00:02:31.61 And he wasn't interested in Christianity. 00:02:31.65\00:02:34.38 He joined the army at 16 and fought in England's civil war. 00:02:34.42\00:02:38.75 He was very nearly killed while in the military. 00:02:38.79\00:02:41.59 He was selected to take part in a siege near Leicester 00:02:41.62\00:02:44.89 when another soldier asked to take his place. 00:02:44.93\00:02:48.16 That other soldier was shot and killed. 00:02:48.20\00:02:50.27 [gunshot sound] 00:02:50.30\00:02:51.83 When he married, Bunyan and his wife moved here 00:02:51.87\00:02:55.84 to St. Cuthbert's Street in nearby Bedford, 00:02:55.87\00:02:58.51 which is about 50 miles from London. 00:02:58.54\00:03:00.98 Today, Bedford is a market town with a population 00:03:01.01\00:03:03.35 of about 175,000 people. 00:03:03.38\00:03:05.88 Then, the population was closer to 2,000. 00:03:05.91\00:03:09.62 The newlyweds lived in abject poverty. 00:03:09.65\00:03:12.59 But something they did have was two spiritual books 00:03:12.62\00:03:16.12 Mrs. Bunyan brought into the marriage. 00:03:16.16\00:03:18.63 Those books, along with sermons he heard 00:03:18.66\00:03:20.73 and an occasion on which 00:03:20.76\00:03:22.30 a woman chastised him for his bad language, 00:03:22.33\00:03:25.20 convinced Bunyan that he needed to change. 00:03:25.23\00:03:27.70 And so he did--outwardly. 00:03:27.74\00:03:30.44 There was a head change but no heart change. 00:03:30.47\00:03:33.44 And he knew it. 00:03:33.48\00:03:35.11 But Martin Luther's commentary on the book of Galatians 00:03:35.14\00:03:37.81 got through to the young man, and he was born again. 00:03:37.85\00:03:40.98 It wasn't long and John Bunyan was preaching--often. 00:03:41.02\00:03:45.65 But the problem was that Bunyan was a nonconformist, 00:03:45.69\00:03:48.99 that is, he didn't attend a Church of England church. 00:03:49.02\00:03:52.63 Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, 00:03:52.66\00:03:54.96 and Quakers were considered nonconformists. 00:03:55.00\00:03:58.23 But Bunyan didn't identify with any of these groups. 00:03:58.27\00:04:01.64 He was a Puritan. 00:04:01.67\00:04:04.01 Puritans were Protestants who believed the Church of England 00:04:04.04\00:04:07.28 wasn't Protestant enough. 00:04:07.31\00:04:09.28 They felt the Anglican Church was still too Catholic, 00:04:09.31\00:04:12.75 and to take the Protestant Reformation further. 00:04:12.78\00:04:15.45 And that just wouldn't do. 00:04:15.48\00:04:17.95 The idea that a tinker, a mender of pots and pans, 00:04:17.99\00:04:22.16 like his father, would preach, 00:04:22.19\00:04:24.76 that was too much for the Church of England. 00:04:24.79\00:04:27.56 ¤[playful orchestral and synth music]¤ 00:04:27.60\00:04:31.57 [indistinct voices] 00:04:37.51\00:04:38.81 For a while, he preached in disguise, 00:04:38.84\00:04:40.98 but then he gave that up and was arrested 00:04:41.01\00:04:43.85 and cast into the Bedford jail, 00:04:43.88\00:04:45.81 which stood right there on that spot. 00:04:45.85\00:04:48.52 It was a loathsome thing: 00:04:48.55\00:04:50.85 two cells, dreadfully overcrowded, no running water, 00:04:50.89\00:04:54.96 and open sewers. 00:04:54.99\00:04:57.29 It was not nice. 00:04:57.33\00:04:59.49 He was charged with having "devilishly and perniciously 00:04:59.53\00:05:02.66 "abstained from coming to church to hear divine service," 00:05:02.70\00:05:06.50 as well as holding "several unlawful meetings 00:05:06.53\00:05:09.00 "and conventicles, to the great disturbance and distraction 00:05:09.04\00:05:12.44 of the good subjects of this kingdom." 00:05:12.47\00:05:14.88 But he could easily have avoided prison. 00:05:14.91\00:05:17.28 All he needed to do was assure the judge 00:05:17.31\00:05:19.58 that he would go to church where and when he was told. 00:05:19.61\00:05:23.22 He could then have stayed with his wife and children, 00:05:23.25\00:05:25.35 earned a living, and supported his family. 00:05:25.39\00:05:27.89 But as much as he wanted to avoid 00:05:27.92\00:05:29.42 that, that awful Bedford jail and remain with his loved ones, 00:05:29.46\00:05:33.73 Bunyan gave the judge no such assurance. 00:05:33.76\00:05:36.36 In fact, he told the judge that should he be released, 00:05:36.40\00:05:39.60 he would go out and start preaching immediately. 00:05:39.63\00:05:42.94 So, on November 13, 1660, John Bunyan was imprisoned. 00:05:42.97\00:05:48.64 If after being released from prison he didn't attend 00:05:48.68\00:05:51.95 a regular Anglican church, he'd be banished from the kingdom. 00:05:51.98\00:05:56.62 If he didn't go, he'd hang. 00:05:56.65\00:06:00.16 When Charles II was crowned king, 00:06:00.19\00:06:02.16 many prisoners were pardoned. 00:06:02.19\00:06:04.16 In fact, only the worst were not. 00:06:04.19\00:06:06.59 Bunyan was not. 00:06:06.63\00:06:08.83 He spent 12 years in the Bedford jail. 00:06:08.86\00:06:11.37 He refused to even apply for a pardon because that would be 00:06:11.40\00:06:15.34 to admit he had done something wrong. 00:06:15.37\00:06:18.14 While he was in prison, 00:06:18.17\00:06:19.21 he earned a little money making shoelaces, 00:06:19.24\00:06:22.48 but his family was supported mainly by church members. 00:06:22.51\00:06:26.48 He was so well liked by the jailers 00:06:26.51\00:06:28.62 that there times he was allowed out of prison. 00:06:28.65\00:06:31.99 And he even managed to attend nonconformist meetings. 00:06:32.02\00:06:36.06 He used his time in the jail as productively as he could. 00:06:36.09\00:06:39.79 He wrote "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners" 00:06:39.83\00:06:42.66 while imprisoned, 00:06:42.70\00:06:44.23 and he began work on "The Pilgrim's Progress." 00:06:44.27\00:06:47.27 ¤[soft music]¤ 00:06:47.30\00:06:49.27 Bunyan was released after serving 12 years in prison, 00:06:49.30\00:06:52.94 but it seems he did not go back to his old life as a tinker. 00:06:52.97\00:06:57.65 Instead, he became a prolific author, 00:06:57.68\00:06:59.28 penning in total around 60 works. 00:06:59.31\00:07:02.52 He wrote a commentary on the book of Revelation. 00:07:02.55\00:07:04.99 His book "Grace Abounding to the Chief of 00:12:12.56\00:12:15.23 It's a substantial book. 00:12:15.26\00:12:16.87 It's an allegory, a story that can be interpreted 00:12:16.90\00:12:20.24 to reveal a hidden meaning, 00:12:20.27\00:12:22.50 as the Cambridge Dictionary says, 00:12:22.54\00:12:24.41 "a work in which the characters and events represent 00:12:24.44\00:12:28.04 particular moral, religious, or political qualities or ideas." 00:12:28.08\00:12:32.75 The book is written as the retelling of a dream in which 00:12:34.25\00:12:37.82 we witness the journey of a man named Christian. 00:12:37.85\00:12:41.26 A man named Evangelist encourages Christian 00:12:41.29\00:12:43.66 to leave his home in the City of Destruction 00:12:43.69\00:12:46.59 and make his way to Mount Zion, or the Celestial City. 00:12:46.63\00:12:50.97 His family refuse to go with him. 00:12:51.00\00:12:53.34 Christian says, "My wife was afraid of losing this world, 00:12:53.37\00:12:57.01 "and my children were given to foolish delights of youth; 00:12:57.04\00:13:00.84 "so, what by one thing, and what by another, 00:13:00.88\00:13:03.68 they left me to wander in this manner alone." 00:13:03.71\00:13:07.55 So he leaves them behind and sets off on his own. 00:13:07.58\00:13:10.35 Along the way he encounters an array 00:13:10.39\00:13:12.25 of fascinating individuals, 00:13:12.29\00:13:13.96 adventures that sometimes imperiled his life. 00:13:13.99\00:13:17.09 He meets animals and demons and a whole lot more 00:13:17.13\00:13:20.60 as he makes his way towards the Celestial City. 00:13:20.63\00:13:24.77 Bunyan was a man who contended for his faith. 00:13:24.80\00:13:28.04 His impact on society and on succeeding generations 00:13:28.07\00:13:31.51 was immense. 00:13:31.54\00:13:33.34 John Newton, the man who wrote "Amazing Grace" 00:13:33.38\00:13:36.01 and campaigned for the abolition of slavery in Britain, 00:13:36.04\00:13:39.18 encouraged William Wilberforce, 00:13:39.21\00:13:41.08 the man who was really responsible for ending slavery, 00:13:41.12\00:13:44.32 to read three books by Bunyan: 00:13:44.35\00:13:47.02 "The Jerusalem Sinner Saved," 00:13:47.06\00:13:49.22 "Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ," 00:13:49.26\00:13:51.43 and "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners." 00:13:51.46\00:13:55.43 Newton himself preached a series of sermons on the book 00:13:55.46\00:13:59.37 "The Pilgrim's Progress." 00:13:59.40\00:14:01.90 "The Pilgrim's Progress" has been translated 00:14:01.94\00:14:04.04 into more than 200 languages. 00:14:04.07\00:14:06.71 Three years after it was first published in England, 00:14:06.74\00:14:09.84 it was printed in New England in the United States. 00:14:09.88\00:14:13.55 In 1847, a London missionary society 00:14:13.58\00:14:16.72 sent 5,000 Tahitian Bibles to Tahiti, 00:14:16.75\00:14:20.72 along with 4,000 Tahitian copies of "The Pilgrim's Progress." 00:14:20.76\00:14:25.99 One of the great strengths of the book is its ability 00:14:26.03\00:14:29.23 to cut to the heart, to present profound spiritual ideas 00:14:29.26\00:14:33.80 in a simple and clear way. 00:14:33.84\00:14:35.90 Let me share some quotes with you: 00:14:35.94\00:14:38.31 "What God says is may have reliance on Him that is stronger than all." 00:14:49.45\00:14:53.92 "There is in Jesus Christ more merit and righteousness 00:14:54.92\00:14:58.26 than the whole world has need of." 00:14:58.29\00:15:00.40 "To know is a thing that pleaseth talkers and boasters; 00:15:01.36\00:15:05.23 but to do is that which pleaseth God." 00:15:05.27\00:15:08.90 "Dark clouds bring waters, when
