consequences. 00:13:16.59\00:13:21.10 The famous Red Basilica of Pergamon 00:13:21.13\00:13:23.70 illustrates the blending of paganism with Christianity 00:13:23.73\00:13:27.14 that took place during this time. 00:13:27.17\00:13:29.77 This was originally a temple dedicated to the worship 00:13:29.80\00:13:32.41 of Egyptian gods, such as Isis and Serapis 00:13:32.44\00:13:36.41 and probably also Osiris and Horus 00:13:36.44\00:13:38.81 and some lesser gods as well. 00:13:38.85\00:13:41.98 But when the Roman Empire came to profess Christianity, 00:13:42.02\00:13:45.05 this temple became a Christian church and was dedicated 00:13:45.09\00:13:49.19 to the apostle John, the one who wrote the book of Revelation. 00:13:49.22\00:13:53.36 The Christian faith became corrupted, 00:13:53.40\00:13:56.30 taking on the symbols and icons of heathenism 00:13:56.33\00:14:00.40 and baptizing them into Christianity. 00:14:00.44\00:14:03.47 ¤[melancholy orchestral music continues]¤ 00:14:03.51\00:14:06.24 This is what happened to Christendom 00:14:06.27\00:14:07.84 during the centuries immediately following the end of persecution 00:14:07.88\00:14:11.61 by pagan Rome. 00:14:11.65\00:14:13.98 The emperor Constantine claims to accept Christianity 00:14:14.02\00:14:17.25 during this time, and he made the Christian religion 00:14:17.29\00:14:20.29 popular in the pagan world. 00:14:20.32\00:14:23.36 Heathen gods and heathen customs were incorporated 00:14:23.39\00:14:27.23 into Christian worship practices. 00:14:27.30\00:14:29.96 Yes, there were those who stayed true 00:14:30.00\00:14:31.60 to the original Christian faith, 00:14:31.63\00:14:34.07 but millions of unconverted pagans crowded the gates 00:14:34.10\00:14:38.07 of the church, and the message of the gospel became corrupt. 00:14:38.11\00:14:43.11 The faithful few who kept alive the genuine Christian message 00:14:44.28\00:14:47.98 are represented by Antipas, the martyr mentioned by Jesus 00:14:48.02\00:14:52.39 in His message to the Pergamos church. 00:14:52.42\00:14:54.89 The evidence of history indicates that Antipas 00:14:54.92\00:14:57.13 was ordained by the apostle John as a bishop 00:14:57.16\00:15:00.63 during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero. 00:15:00.66\00:15:03.13 It's believed he was martyred 00:15:03.16\00:15:04.90 during the persecution of Christians under Nero. 00:15:04.93\00:15:08.47 But Antipas definitely appears to have been in the minority 00:15:08.50\00:15:12.17 of Christians during this time, 00:15:12.21\00:15:14.11 and the message from Jesus bears this out. 00:15:14.14\00:15:17.55 It seems that many more had fallen 00:15:17.58\00:15:19.65 for the morally permissive teachings of the Nicolaitans, 00:15:19.68\00:15:23.02 who were mentioned in the letter to the church at Ephesus. 00:15:23.05\00:15:26.59 These professed Christians seemed to have developed 00:15:26.62\00:15:29.99 a gospel which promised salvation 00:15:30.03\00:15:32.79 without regard to how people chose to live. 00:15:32.83\00:15:35.86 Jesus connects this corrupt gospel 00:15:35.90\00:15:38.07 with the teachings of Balaam in the Old Testament, 00:15:38.10\00:15:41.87 who successfully lured the children of Israel 00:15:41.90\00:15:44.51 into sexual immorality through the worship of pagan gods 00:15:44.54\00:15:50.21 just before Israel crossed Jordan into the land of Canaan. 00:15:50.25\00:15:55.38 You can read the story in Numbers 25. 00:15:55.42\00:15:58.55 Balaam had been unable to curse the people of Israel 00:15:58.59\00:16:01.62 as the Moabite king Balak wanted him to. 00:16:01.66\00:16:05.09 What Jesus is telling us here in the message to Pergamos 00:16:05.13\00:16:07.86 is that just as Balaam convinced Balak to tempt the Israelites 00:16:07.93\00:16:11.73 to engage in sexual sin and worship idols in the process, 00:16:11.77\00:16:17.74 similar thing happened in Constantine's time 00:16:17.77\00:16:20.88 and the centuries afterwards 00:16:20.91\00:16:22.58 when idolatry flooded into the church. 00:16:22.61\00:16:26.51 And because of this, the history of the Christian church 00:16:26.55\00:16:28.65 in the ages that followed was darkened by apostasy 00:16:28.68\00:16:32.59 and by the persecution of those who stood up against it. 00:16:32.62\00:16:35.52 ¤[somber music]¤ 00:16:35.56\00:16:36.52 Now, Jesus said to the church here 00:16:36.56\00:16:38.43 that He had a sharp, two-edged sword in His mouth. 00:16:38.46\00:16:43.87 Now, why was that? 00:16:43.90\00:16:45.47 Bradshaw: Jesus spoke very pointedly 00:18:34.94\00:18:36.51 to the Christians at Pergamon. 00:18:36.54\00:18:38.61 And those same words ring down through the centuries 00:18:38.65\00:18:41.15 to these post-modern times. 00:18:41.18\00:18:43.85 He said to them 00:18:43.89\00:18:45.59 that He had a sharp two-edged sword 00:18:45.62\00:18:48.29 and that with it He would punish 00:18:48.32\00:18:50.49 those who refused to repent. 00:18:50.53\00:18:52.46 You see something very similar over in Revelation, chapter 19 00:18:52.49\00:18:56.20 at the time of Jesus' return. 00:18:56.23\00:18:58.37 Revelation 19, verse 15 says this: 00:18:58.40\00:19:01.00 "Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, 00:19:01.97\00:19:04.77 "that with it He should strike the nations. 00:19:04.81\00:19:07.64 "And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. 00:19:07.68\00:19:11.18 "He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness 00:19:11.21\00:19:14.18 and wrath of Almighty God." 00:19:14.22\00:19:17.22 So what is this sword that Jesus spoke about? 00:19:17.25\00:19:20.32 The New Testament mentions it on two other occasions. 00:19:20.36\00:19:23.89 Writing to the church in Ephesus, not far from here, 00:19:23.93\00:19:27.30 Paul said that the Ephesian Christians should "take 00:19:27.36\00:19:29.60 "the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, 00:19:29.63\00:19:34.10 which is the word of God." 00:19:34.14\00:19:36.34 The Bible mentions it also in the book of Hebrews: 00:19:36.37\00:19:40.18 "For the word of God is living and powerful, 00:19:41.14\00:19:44.15 "and sharper than any two-edged sword, 00:19:44.18\00:19:47.08 "piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, 00:19:47.12\00:19:50.42 "and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner 00:19:50.45\00:19:54.06 of the thoughts and intents of the heart." 00:19:54.09\00:19:57.19 The sword Jesus spoke of is the Word of God, 00:19:57.23\00:20:01.23 and you can see, given the context, 00:20:01.26\00:20:02.86 that He is referring to the Ten Commandments, 00:20:02.90\00:20:05.73 an expression of the character of God-- 00:20:05.77\00:20:08.27 really, promises to the believer of what the life of a believer 00:20:08.30\00:20:11.91 will look like when Jesus lives in the heart. 00:20:11.94\00:20:15.08 Solomon understood this when he wrote the book of Ecclesiastes: 00:20:15.11\00:20:19.65 "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: 00:20:19.68\00:20:22.72 "Fear God, and keep His commandments, 00:20:22.75\00:20:25.49 "for this is the whole duty of man. 00:20:25.52\00:20:28.66 "For God will bring every work into judgment, 00:20:28.69\00:20:31.99 "including every secret thing, 00:20:32.03\00:20:34.56 whether [it be] good or [whether it be] evil." 00:20:34.60\00:20:37.60 ¤[music fades]¤ 00:20:38.93\00:20:40.04 Thank God, Jesus' message to the church at Pergamon 00:20:40.07\00:20:42.94 doesn't end with a warning. 00:20:42.97\00:20:45.14 He makes a promise to those who overcome through faith in Him, 00:20:45.17\00:20:49.58 as opposed to those compromisers who try to make peace with sin. 00:20:49.61\00:20:54.22 Let's take a look at that promise "And I will give him a white stone, 00:21:01.09\00:21:03.19 "and on the stone a new name written 00:21:03.22\00:21:05.99 which no one knows except him who receives it." 00:21:06.03\00:21:08.83 So what is this "hidden manna" Jesus is speaking of? 00:21:10.10\00:21:14.40 Hebrews, chapter 9 says that a golden pot 00:21:14.44\00:21:17.01 was placed inside the Ark of the Covenant. 00:21:17.04\00:21:20.14 It contained manna, 00:21:20.18\00:21:22.14 that food with which God miraculously fed His people 00:21:22.18\00:21:25.08 as they wandered through the wilderness 00:21:25.11\00:21:26.95 on their way to Canaan. 00:21:26.98\00:21:28.55 The Bible calls it angels' food. 00:21:28.58\00:21:31.15 It's a symbol of the bread of life, 00:21:31.19\00:21:34.46 the life-giving Word of God Jesus was speaking of 00:21:34.49\00:21:37.79 when He said that people should live not "by bread alone, 00:21:37.83\00:21:40.20 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:21:40.23\00:21:44.97 Jeremiah the prophet spoke of the Word of God 00:21:45.00\00:21:47.37 in the same way when he said, 00:21:47.40\00:21:49.67 "Your words were found, and I ate them." 00:21:49.70\00:21:53.17 Jesus is saying to those who choose to live a life of faith 00:21:53.21\00:21:56.81 that they'll be nourished by God's Word. 00:21:56.85\00:22:00.25 Like Israel in the wilderness, 00:22:00.28\00:22:02.32 they will eat the bread of heaven itself. 00:22:02.35\00:22:07.16 Now, what about this white stone Jesus refers to? 00:22:07.19\00:22:09.76 Well, truth is there's very little consensus among scholars 00:22:09.79\00:22:14.00 as to what is represented here, very little agreement. 00:22:14.00\00:22:17.20 There's a school of thought that says 00:22:17.23\00:22:18.37 this references the tessera; 00:22:18.40\00:22:20.54 these were essentially tokens of admittance. 00:22:20.57\00:22:23.81 Others associate it with acquittal. 00:22:23.84\00:22:26.98 Well, whatever it is precisely, 00:22:27.01\00:22:29.34 we know that Jesus is giving something enduring, 00:22:29.38\00:22:33.18 something pure to His people, 00:22:33.21\00:22:35.75 and He is letting them know that they have eternal life 00:22:35.78\00:22:39.32 with Him, life with the Savior, the Redeemer forever. 00:22:39.35\00:22:44.33 ¤[contemplative 00:22:52.47\00:22:55.94 a new experience, or a new spiritual destiny. 00:22:55.97\00:23:00.21 Like that time Jacob wrestled with an angel: 00:23:00.24\00:23:03.75 "Your name shall no longer be called Jesus comes, 00:23:14.79\00:23:17.29 He will have a "name written" that no one knew except Himself. 00:23:17.33\00:23:21.70 In His promise to His followers in Pergamon, 00:23:23.70\00:23:25.80 Jesus promises them that they, too, will receive a new name-- 00:23:25.83\00:23:30.67 insignia of honor, tokens of triumph. 00:23:30.71\00:23:34.34 Like Jacob, the victorious saints will receive a new name 00:23:34.38\00:23:37.88 as a reward for their faithfulness and perseverance. 00:23:37.91\00:23:41.72 Of course, the wonderful truth 00:23:41.75\00:23:42.98 is that you can have the white stone.
