¤[music ends]¤¤ 00:00:16.34\00:00:18.35 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:19.81\00:00:21.45 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:21.48\00:00:23.95 If you go to a live performance at your local theater, 00:00:23.99\00:00:26.79 you'll see a live orchestra, a musician, maybe, 00:00:26.82\00:00:30.39 a team of gymnasts, or a troupe of Shakespearean actors, 00:00:30.43\00:00:34.73 something along those lines. 00:00:34.76\00:00:36.70 But if you were alive in the 1840s and sitting 00:00:36.73\00:00:39.23 in the audience at a theater, you might have heard something 00:00:39.27\00:00:42.70 a bit different. 00:00:42.74\00:00:44.24 You might have heard a mysterious knocking. 00:00:44.27\00:00:46.61 [reverberating knocking sound, audience murmurs] 00:00:46.64\00:00:48.71 When the show began, you would have seen two young girls, 00:00:48.74\00:00:52.35 Maggie and Kate Fox. 00:00:52.38\00:00:54.78 You'd have heard them speaking to and asking questions of... 00:00:54.82\00:00:58.49 no one, it seemed. 00:00:58.52\00:01:00.59 Then you would have felt the silence in the room. 00:01:00.62\00:01:03.36 ¤[foreboding music]¤ 00:01:03.39\00:01:04.53 You'd have seen members of the audience leaning forward 00:01:04.56\00:01:06.73 in their seats. Maybe you, too, would have leaned forward, 00:01:06.76\00:01:10.27 waiting for something to happen. 00:01:10.30\00:01:14.67 Then you would have heard what you came to hear: 00:01:14.70\00:01:17.04 [rapping sounds] rappings on the floor or the furniture, 00:01:17.07\00:01:20.51 sounds of knocking that didn't appear to come from anywhere, 00:01:20.54\00:01:24.55 that frankly seemed otherworldly, 00:01:24.58\00:01:26.68 that spelled out messages, or sometimes even rapped 00:01:26.72\00:01:30.22 in the rhythm of well-known tunes of the time. 00:01:30.25\00:01:33.39 What were these knockings? 00:01:33.42\00:01:35.82 The Fox sisters claimed they were spirits. 00:01:35.86\00:01:40.03 ¤[spooky music]¤ 00:01:40.06\00:01:41.23 The story of the Fox sisters begins in Hydesville, New York, 00:01:41.26\00:01:44.50 where Maggie and Kate Fox lived as girls in a small home 00:01:44.53\00:01:47.97 with their parents. 00:01:48.00\00:01:49.37 The home, they claimed, was haunted, 00:01:49.40\00:01:52.04 and the girls often heard knockings on the walls. 00:01:52.07\00:01:55.64 They began to invite people over to the house 00:01:55.68\00:01:57.45 to demonstrate what was happening. 00:01:57.48\00:01:59.61 As they did this, the girls began to gain notoriety. 00:01:59.65\00:02:03.65 Eventually they were invited to another home 00:02:03.69\00:02:06.09 to see if the knockings would happen in other places. 00:02:06.12\00:02:09.19 They did! Or at least they seemed to. 00:02:09.22\00:02:12.03 Then the girls began to perform in halls and theaters. 00:02:12.06\00:02:15.73 Their popularity exploded, and Maggie and Kate 00:02:15.76\00:02:19.57 were then joined by their older sister, Leah. 00:02:19.60\00:02:22.57 They took to the road, 00:02:22.60\00:02:23.57 performing in cities all over the United States. 00:02:23.61\00:02:26.94 Everywhere they stopped their séances drew people 00:02:26.98\00:02:29.88 from all walks of life. 00:02:29.91\00:02:32.28 Why were people so enticed by the knocking sounds? 00:02:32.31\00:02:35.78 Well, that's because what the Fox sisters offered 00:02:35.82\00:02:37.79 was more than just a mere night's entertainment. 00:02:37.82\00:02:41.06 It was, they claimed, a glimpse, 00:02:41.09\00:02:43.93 an open door to the other side. 00:02:43.96\00:02:47.13 Add to that the fact that the communications 00:02:47.13\00:02:49.03 the sisters claimed to receive from the spirits of the dead 00:02:49.06\00:02:53.17 often offered hope about the times. 00:02:53.20\00:02:56.40 Surely, the combination of such encouraging messages, 00:02:56.44\00:02:59.47 the intrigue of the supernatural, 00:02:59.51\00:03:01.84 and the ability to communicate with those who had died 00:03:01.88\00:03:04.35 sparked the interest of a generation. 00:03:04.38\00:03:07.62 And it was the Fox sisters' performances, 00:03:07.65\00:03:09.78 more than anything else, 00:03:09.82\00:03:11.22 that galvanized what one historian has called 00:03:11.25\00:03:13.62 "one of the greatest religious movements 00:03:13.66\00:03:15.82 of the 19th century": 00:03:15.86\00:03:17.56 American spiritualism. 00:03:17.59\00:03:20.10 This movement went beyond spirit rappings and séances, though. 00:03:20.13\00:03:24.67 Another popular attraction at the time was mesmerism. 00:03:24.70\00:03:28.84 Mesmerism had been popular in the United States 00:03:29.84\00:03:32.34 since the 1830s when Charles Poyen, 00:03:32.37\00:03:35.41 a Frenchman who practiced animal magnetism, or mesmerism, 00:03:35.44\00:03:40.08 traveled to New England and began to give talks 00:03:40.12\00:03:42.18 about his ability to heal illnesses by mesmerizing people, 00:03:42.22\00:03:47.16 a practice initiated by a man named Anton Mesmer. 00:03:47.19\00:03:50.79 Poyen could, he claimed, put his patients 00:03:50.83\00:03:52.76 in a sleep-like state or a trance and then 00:03:52.79\00:03:56.13 make magnetic passes over the body with his hands. 00:03:56.16\00:04:00.50 These actions he and others believed would rebalance 00:04:00.54\00:04:03.41 the magnetic forces that some scientists of the time thought 00:04:03.44\00:04:07.38 were in the body. 00:04:07.41\00:04:08.34 Like the Fox sisters did later on, 00:04:08.38\00:04:11.28 Poyen traveled around the United States 00:04:11.31\00:04:13.31 giving demonstrations of mesmerism. 00:04:13.35\00:04:16.48 And other mesmerists rose up to do the same. 00:04:16.52\00:04:19.72 Beyond the supposed powers of healing that practitioners 00:04:19.75\00:04:23.53 of mesmerism said their art could bring to people, 00:04:23.56\00:04:27.00 they also boasted that mesmerism allowed them 00:04:27.03\00:04:29.90 to access people's minds and could enable individuals 00:04:29.93\00:04:34.20 to act as mediums for spirits. 00:04:34.24\00:04:37.61 The stories of Charles Poyen and the Fox sisters show us 00:04:37.64\00:04:40.91 that spiritualism had its big introduction and its heyday 00:04:40.94\00:04:45.05 in the United States in the 19th century. 00:04:45.08\00:04:48.02 But it's important to note that it's nothing new. 00:04:48.05\00:04:51.15 In fact, it's been around since Bible times. 00:04:51.19\00:04:55.12 First Samuel 28 tells the story of King Saul 00:04:55.16\00:04:58.13 consulting a medium. It happened after he realized 00:04:58.16\00:05:02.00 that the Philistine army was gathering to attack Israel, 00:05:02.03\00:05:04.73 and no matter how much he prayed and asked for help 00:05:04.77\00:05:07.34 from prophets, the Lord God would not give him an answer. 00:05:07.37\00:05:10.64 In his desperation he went to see a witch in a place 00:05:10.67\00:05:14.41 called Endor, asking her to raise up the prophet Samuel, 00:05:14.44\00:05:17.75 who had died, so that Samuel could give Saul advice. 00:05:17.78\00:05:21.52 The visit did not end up helping Saul, though. 00:05:21.55\00:05:23.85 He just received the message he'd already received, 00:05:23.89\00:05:26.99 that God had taken his kingdom from him, 00:05:27.02\00:05:29.72 and it would be given to David. 00:05:29.76\00:05:31.96 Shortly after this meeting, Saul died in battle, 00:05:31.99\00:05:35.20 and everything happened as the Lord said it would. 00:05:35.23\00:05:39.20 The long shadow of spiritualism reaches into more modern times 00:05:39.23\00:05:43.27 as well. It's well known, for example, 00:05:43.30\00:05:45.37 that former first lady Nancy Reagan sought the advice 00:05:45.41\00:05:48.81 of an astrologer named Joan Quigley 00:05:48.84\00:05:50.91 throughout her husband Ronald Reagan's presidency 00:05:50.95\00:05:53.52 in the 1980s. 00:05:53.55\00:05:54.88 And today we only need to look to popular television 00:05:54.92\00:05:58.42 to see the influence of spiritualism 00:05:58.45\00:06:00.62 on our culture. [static noise and growling] 00:06:00.66\00:06:02.96 You can think of numerous television programs 00:06:02.99\00:06:05.23 which include spells and witchcraft and sorcery, 00:06:05.26\00:06:10.20 communication with the dead, and so on. 00:06:10.23\00:06:13.94 In fact, in the 21st century, 00:06:13.97\00:06:16.34 spiritualism has become even more brazen than ever before, 00:06:16.37\00:06:21.41 with television programs even discussing Satan 00:06:21.44\00:06:25.08 as a character, making him sympathetic to his viewers. 00:06:25.11\00:06:30.05 But what does God say about all of this? 00:06:31.39\00:06:34.12 About participating in séances, consulting mediums, 00:06:34.16\00:06:37.83 or being involved with witchcraft in any way? 00:06:37.86\00:06:41.33 The Bible's very clear about these practices. 00:06:41.36\00:06:44.00 In Leviticus 19:31, God says, 00:06:44.03\00:06:46.77 "Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; 00:06:46.80\00:06:50.27 do not seek after them, to be defiled by them." 00:06:50.31\00:06:53.71 Deuteronomy 18:10-12 says, 00:06:53.74\00:06:56.08 "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son 00:06:56.11\00:06:59.11 "or his daughter pass through the fire, 00:06:59.15\00:07:01.58 "or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, 00:07:01.62\00:07:04.85 "or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 00:07:04.89\00:07:07.82 "or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, 00:07:07.86\00:07:11.96 "or one who calls up the dead. 00:07:11.99\00:07:13.80 For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord." 00:07:13.83\00:07:17.43 And in the New Testament, Paul declares in Galatians, 00:07:17.47\00:07:19.83 chapter 5, that "those who practice [idolatry and sorcery] 00:07:19.87\00:07:24.01 will not inherit the kingdom of God." 00:07:24.04\00:07:27.14 In accordance with what the Bible says, 00:07:27.18\00:07:29.58 we should avoid séances and witchcraft because we know 00:07:29.61\00:07:33.21 that if we do these things, we would be dancing with the devil. 00:07:33.25\00:07:38.45 But did you know there are more subtle forms 00:07:38.49\00:07:41.06 of spiritualism that are all around us in this day and age? 00:07:41.09\00:07:44.89 And those things should be avoided, too. 00:07:44.93\00:07:47.30 We'll talk about those when we come back in just a moment. 00:07:47.36\00:07:50.80 ¤[music swells and ends]¤¤ 00:07:50.83\00:07:57.84 >>Announcer: Spiritualism, witchcraft, 00:07:59.77\00:08:01.88 and communication with the dead have become mainstream 00:08:01.91\00:08:04.88 in today's society. 00:08:04.91\00:08:06.48 What does the Bible teach us about these topics? 00:08:06.51\00:08:09.58 Our free offer today is "Charmed by the Supernatural." 00:08:09.62\00:08:13.02 To receive this free DVD, 00:08:13.05\00:08:14.56 call 800-253-3000 00:08:14.59\00:08:17.39 or visit us online at iiwoffer.com. 00:08:17.43\00:08:21.03 Know what the Bible says about the supernatural. 00:08:21.06\00:08:23.90 Call 800-253-3000 00:08:23.93\00:08:26.80 or visit iiwoffer.com. 00:08:26.84\00:08:29.50 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written. 00:08:30.67\00:08:32.77 Going to see a clairvoyant or consulting a Ouija board 00:08:32.81\00:08:36.08 are obvious, in-your-face forms of spiritualism. 00:08:36.11\00:08:40.28 But there are plenty of practices today 00:08:40.32\00:08:41.88 that may seem harmless 00:08:41.92\00:08:44.05 but are actually spiritualistic in nature. 00:08:44.09\00:08:46.69 Some of these even Christians practice with the justification 00:08:46.72\00:08:50.79 that they can bring one closer to God. 00:08:50.83\00:08:53.26 Among these practices are the use of crystals for healing 00:08:53.29\00:08:56.93 and yoga for exercise and meditation. 00:08:56.97\00:09:00.84 I spoke with a young woman raised in the Santería religion. 00:09:00.87\00:09:05.51 Really, that's voodoo. 00:09:05.54\00:09:07.64 And I asked her about her experiences and her insights 00:09:07.68\00:09:12.01 into the occult. 00:09:12.05\00:09:13.75 So, tell me, in your experience, the occult is very real. 00:09:13.78\00:09:16.79 You were involved as a younger person in, in Santería, which, 00:09:16.82\00:09:20.46 it's called voodoo in Haiti, so that's very much witchcraft. 00:09:20.49\00:09:24.33 What were the sorts of experiences that you had? 00:09:24.36\00:09:27.23 >>Tammy: So, I was baptized into it. 00:09:27.30\00:09:30.67 The, the way that it was practiced, um, 00:09:30.70\00:09:33.40 in my family was considered white magic. 00:09:33.44\00:09:36.07 Um, and so it was for protection or for, uh, 00:09:36.10\00:09:39.87 trying to gain things. 00:09:39.91\00:09:41.74 Um, I had a lot of demonic presence around me. 00:09:41.78\00:09:46.78 At the time I didn't know they were demonic presence, 00:09:46.82\00:09:49.28 most of the time. It's a well-known story. 00:18:36.95\00:18:40.92 As they journeyed deeper into the desert, 00:18:40.95\00:18:43.82 they gave way to doubt, allowing their circumstances 00:18:43.85\00:18:47.09 to dictate their attitudes towards Moses 00:18:47.12\00:18:50.23 and ultimately God Himself. 00:18:50.26\00:18:52.26 They complained at every turn. 00:18:52.29\00:18:55.00 They didn't have water. God gave it to them from a rock. 00:18:55.03\00:18:58.13 They didn't have food. 00:18:58.17\00:18:59.53 God rained manna from heaven to feed them. 00:18:59.57\00:19:02.74 They got tired of the manna. God gave them quail. 00:19:02.77\00:19:06.14 They became sick from eating it. 00:19:06.17\00:19:08.31 Really, their lack wasn't food and water; 00:19:08.34\00:19:12.01 it was trust in God to lead them, to save them. 00:19:12.05\00:19:16.28 And this became all too apparent 00:19:16.32\00:19:17.82 when God called Moses to speak with Him on Mount Sinai. 00:19:17.85\00:19:22.02 Despite the fact they'd already witnessed God's presence 00:19:22.06\00:19:24.63 in their midst through the pillar of cloud and fire 00:19:24.66\00:19:27.40 that traveled with them out of Egypt, 00:19:27.46\00:19:29.43 Exodus 20, verse 18 relates, 00:19:29.46\00:19:31.70 "Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, 00:19:31.73\00:19:34.24 "the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, 00:19:34.27\00:19:37.01 "and the mountain smoking; and when [they] saw it, 00:19:37.04\00:19:40.38 they trembled and stood afar off," even though barriers 00:19:40.41\00:19:43.91 had already been put between them and the mountain. 00:19:43.95\00:19:47.42 While Moses was talking with God and receiving 00:19:47.45\00:19:50.25 the Ten Commandments and instructions on how to build 00:19:50.29\00:19:53.02 the tabernacle, the people down below were terrified. 00:19:53.05\00:19:57.79 And the longer Moses was away, the more anxious they became. 00:19:57.83\00:20:02.66 Exodus 32, verse 1: "Now when the people saw 00:20:02.70\00:20:05.93 "that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, 00:20:05.97\00:20:09.30 "the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, 00:20:09.34\00:20:12.71 "'Come, make us gods that shall go before us; 00:20:12.74\00:20:16.68 "'for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up 00:20:16.71\00:20:19.45 "'out of the land of Egypt, 00:20:19.48\00:20:21.38 we do not know what has become of him.'" 00:20:21.42\00:20:23.62 Incredibly, Aaron did as they requested. 00:20:23.65\00:20:27.22 He instructed them to bring the gold they brought out of Egypt. 00:20:27.26\00:20:30.63 When they did, the Bible tells us that Aaron 00:20:30.66\00:20:33.56 "received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it 00:20:33.60\00:20:37.13 with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf." 00:20:37.17\00:20:41.27 The next day the people gathered to worship the calf 00:20:41.30\00:20:44.84 and make sacrifices to it. 00:20:44.87\00:20:46.57 Seeing their sin, God said to Moses, 00:20:46.61\00:20:48.84 "Go, get down! For your people whom you brought 00:20:48.88\00:20:52.55 "out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves. 00:20:52.58\00:20:55.92 "They have turned aside quickly out of the way 00:20:55.95\00:20:58.12 "which I commanded them. They have made themselves 00:20:58.15\00:21:01.02 "a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it.... 00:21:01.06\00:21:04.73 "I have seen this people, 00:21:04.76\00:21:05.99 "and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! 00:21:06.03\00:21:09.16 "Now therefore, let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot 00:21:09.20\00:21:12.70 against them and I may consume them." 00:21:12.73\00:21:15.70 God could have wiped the Israelites out then and there. 00:21:15.74\00:21:21.44 But Moses pleaded with the Lord, and God relented. 00:21:21.48\00:21:26.15 Yet Moses was angry, too. 00:21:26.18\00:21:27.98 And when he descended the mountain, 00:21:28.02\00:21:30.32 he broke the tablets of stone God had given him. 00:21:30.35\00:21:34.12 The next thing he did was to call his brother to account, 00:21:34.16\00:21:36.83 asking Aaron, "What did this people do to you 00:21:36.86\00:21:40.03 that you have brought so great a sin upon them?" 00:21:40.06\00:21:43.77 So Aaron proceeded to explain what had happened. 00:21:43.80\00:21:47.47 And he ended with the worst excuse in the Bible, 00:21:47.50\00:21:52.47 telling Moses, "I said to them, 'Whoever has any gold, 00:21:52.51\00:21:56.11 "let them break it off.' So they gave it to me, 00:21:56.14\00:21:58.91 and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out." 00:21:58.95\00:22:03.59 Wait a minute. What did he say? 00:22:03.62\00:22:07.69 That all he'd done was throw jewelry and pieces of gold 00:22:07.72\00:22:10.39 into the fire and, voila! out came an idol? 00:22:10.43\00:22:13.80 Would anyone have believed a story like that? 00:22:13.83\00:22:16.13 It was an outright lie and a very poor excuse for a lie. 00:22:16.16\00:22:20.80 The Bible clearly states that Aaron "fashioned it 00:22:20.84\00:22:23.51 with [a]...tool." That calf took a lot of work, 00:22:23.54\00:22:27.44 purposeful work that Aaron had done himself. 00:22:27.48\00:22:31.08 It was not random. It was intentional on his part-- 00:22:31.11\00:22:34.78 and on the part of the people. 00:22:34.82\00:22:37.49 By suggesting the calf happened by itself 00:22:38.59\00:22:41.52 or made itself spontaneously, Aaron was not only lying; 00:22:41.56\00:22:47.13 he was assigning power to the gold 00:22:47.13\00:22:49.33 that the gold didn't possess. 00:22:49.36\00:22:51.93 He was assigning power to the idol, 00:22:51.97\00:22:54.50 that it could somehow self-generate. 00:22:54.54\00:22:57.51 As they worshiped it, 00:22:57.54\00:22:58.74 the Israelites were doing the same thing. 00:22:58.77\00:23:01.71 They ascribed all the power, might, and strength 00:23:01.74\00:23:04.81 they'd already seen with their own eyes from the God of heaven 00:23:04.85\00:23:09.32 to a precious stone carved into an idol. 00:23:09.35\00:23:12.72 Unlike the living God, the golden calf was lifeless 00:23:12.75\00:23:17.43 and could do nothing for them. 00:23:17.46\00:23:19.66 But instead of trusting the true God, 00:23:19.69\00:23:21.56 the One who had actually freed them, 00:23:21.60\00:23:23.30 the One who'd actually given them bread and water, 00:23:23.33\00:23:25.37 the One who had protected them with His mighty hand, 00:23:25.40\00:23:28.80 they were willing to put their trust in inanimate objects, 00:23:28.84\00:23:32.04 in stone instead of the Creator. 00:23:32.07\00:23:36.48 ¤[soft orchestral music]¤ 00:23:36.51\00:23:37.55 The same is true today when people put their trust 00:23:37.58\00:23:39.41 in crystals, precious stones, amulets, and charms. 00:23:39.45\00:23:45.05 These things have no power to heal or help or save. 00:23:45.09\00:23:52.73 The only one who can save is the Rock of Ages, 00:23:52.76\00:23:57.73 Jesus Christ.
