¤[music ends]¤¤ 00:00:15.61\00:00:17.61 >>John Bradshaw: This is "It Is Written." 00:00:18.61\00:00:20.28 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:20.32\00:00:23.18 For decades and decades, depression and anxiety 00:00:23.22\00:00:26.92 have presented the United States and other first-world countries 00:00:26.96\00:00:30.06 around the world with a major health care crisis. 00:00:30.09\00:00:34.20 Dr. Neil Nedley spoke with me about this subject 00:00:34.23\00:00:37.30 about 10 years ago. 00:00:37.33\00:00:38.97 He's the president of Nedley Health and for 25 years 00:00:39.00\00:00:42.90 has been successfully treating people battling all forms 00:00:42.94\00:00:46.71 of depression and anxiety. 00:00:46.74\00:00:48.81 And we're catching up again today. 00:00:48.84\00:00:50.15 Dr. Nedley, thanks for being here with me. 00:00:50.18\00:00:51.71 >>Dr. Neil Nedley: Great to be back with you, John. 00:00:51.75\00:00:53.31 >>John: You talk about depression and how 00:00:53.35\00:00:55.05 to successfully treat depression through lifestyle. 00:00:55.08\00:00:58.69 Why would we talk about this when there are already 00:00:58.72\00:01:02.99 myriad treatments for depression? 00:01:03.02\00:01:06.16 Why aren't you saying there's an array of drugs available 00:01:06.19\00:01:09.80 on the market, grab one, and off you go? 00:01:09.83\00:01:12.27 Why are you not saying that? 00:01:12.30\00:01:13.84 >>Dr. Nedley: Well, because those drugs have been tested 00:01:13.87\00:01:16.27 and tried, and all sorts of studies have been done on them. 00:01:16.30\00:01:19.84 They can help certain patients, but their help is limited, 00:01:19.87\00:01:24.35 and they actually don't decrease suicide risk, 00:01:24.38\00:01:28.15 and they don't improve functioning that much. 00:01:28.18\00:01:31.72 Uh, I mean, over placebo, one of the drugs improves function 00:01:31.75\00:01:35.32 by about 6 percent, but most of them don't improve function. 00:01:35.36\00:01:39.23 And depression is a disease that disables. 00:01:39.26\00:01:42.83 It causes a lot of dysfunction, and of course, 00:01:42.86\00:01:45.90 it's also one of the leading causes of death now 00:01:45.93\00:01:48.87 with suicide rates being so high. 00:01:48.90\00:01:51.14 And so, why would we recommend that they take something 00:01:51.17\00:01:54.54 that isn't going to improve in those parameters? 00:01:54.58\00:01:58.28 And so, it's not that we're against medicine. 00:01:58.31\00:02:01.02 We have patients come to our program with medication. 00:02:01.05\00:02:04.19 We'll take them with or without, 00:02:04.22\00:02:06.02 and we'll keep them on their medicine until they're better 00:02:06.05\00:02:08.36 and don't need them, but medications alone 00:02:08.39\00:02:12.23 are not the answer for depression or anxiety. 00:02:12.26\00:02:14.73 >>John: Okay. Be really easy for somebody to say, 00:02:14.73\00:02:17.03 "Well, Dr. Nedley has a vested interest," 00:02:17.07\00:02:19.37 or, "He's got an ax to grind." I want to ask you, do you? 00:02:19.40\00:02:24.07 And I want to ask you, how much of what you're sharing with me 00:02:24.11\00:02:26.71 is opinion versus hard science? 00:02:26.74\00:02:30.38 >>Dr. Nedley: It's hard science. 00:02:30.41\00:02:31.71 Even the top pharmaceutical researchers in the world 00:02:31.75\00:02:36.79 will tell you that drugs have their limitations 00:02:36.82\00:02:40.19 and that they're not the answer. 00:02:40.22\00:02:41.92 Uh, consensus mental health organizations tell us 00:02:41.96\00:02:45.83 that drugs are not the answer to this problem. 00:02:45.86\00:02:49.43 Once again, they can help in certain situations, 00:02:49.46\00:02:52.83 but they're not the answer. 00:02:52.87\00:02:54.40 We have to go beyond drugs if we're going to eradicate 00:02:54.44\00:02:59.24 and produce the great results that can be obtained 00:02:59.27\00:03:02.78 for depressed and anxious people. 00:03:02.81\00:03:04.41 >>John: In a moment, not right now, 00:03:04.45\00:03:06.41 in a moment I'm going to ask you what the answer is. 00:03:06.45\00:03:09.78 Here's my first question going down that road: 00:03:09.82\00:03:13.52 Is there an answer for depression and anxiety? 00:03:13.56\00:03:16.93 >>Dr. Nedley: Absolutely, there's an answer. 00:03:16.96\00:03:18.26 >>John: You said that unequivocally. 00:03:18.29\00:03:19.46 >>Dr. Nedley: Unequivocally, yes. And we published on it. 00:03:19.49\00:03:22.56 Our case reports are, are very well obtained, 00:03:22.60\00:03:26.53 and the typical patient that we see with depression and anxiety, 00:03:26.57\00:03:31.41 severe, actually, or maybe even extreme, 00:03:31.44\00:03:34.54 will leave our program in 10 days 00:03:34.58\00:03:36.88 with no depression and anxiety. 00:03:36.91\00:03:38.78 And their emotional intelligence will go up. 00:03:38.81\00:03:41.18 Now, it requires their cooperation. 00:03:41.22\00:03:43.39 We have to do a number of different things 00:03:43.42\00:03:45.72 to produce this dramatic change in their brain chemistry 00:03:45.75\00:03:49.19 and their change in their thought pattern, 00:03:49.22\00:03:51.53 but it's well worth the effort. 00:03:51.56\00:03:53.13 >>John: The reason I think it's important we speak about this 00:03:53.16\00:03:55.26 from a, a faith-based point of view is that the Bible speaks 00:03:55.30\00:04:00.30 again and again and again about health, 00:04:00.34\00:04:02.10 and mental health is supremely important. 00:04:02.14\00:04:05.37 Look, just to digress for a brief moment, 00:04:05.41\00:04:07.34 I think it's important we talk about this 00:04:07.38\00:04:08.78 because...too few people speak about mental health. 00:04:08.81\00:04:12.45 Like it or not, there's still a stigma about mental health 00:04:12.48\00:04:14.82 where someone who has a, an ingrown toenail 00:04:14.85\00:04:17.19 is happy to tell his friend he had surgery, 00:04:17.22\00:04:18.99 but somebody with a mental health issue will keep it 00:04:19.02\00:04:21.59 to himself or herself, 00:04:21.62\00:04:23.43 maybe to their detriment or even their demise. 00:04:23.46\00:04:26.70 >>Dr. Nedley: Exactly. 00:04:26.73\00:04:27.86 >>John: And, and another reason we want to talk about this 00:04:27.93\00:04:30.10 is because looking at it from a biblical point of view, 00:04:30.13\00:04:32.73 we see that ultimately, ultimately this thing 00:04:32.77\00:04:36.44 between good and evil is a battle for the mind. 00:04:36.47\00:04:39.04 >>Dr. Nedley: Mm-hmm. 00:04:39.07\00:04:39.91 >>John: So, in one place the Bible says, 00:04:39.94\00:04:41.18 "We have the mind of Christ." We want that as far as possible. 00:04:41.21\00:04:43.78 >>Dr. Nedley: Mm-hmm. >>John: Okay. 00:04:43.81\00:04:45.11 Let's define some things here. What's depression? 00:04:45.15\00:04:47.88 I know you talk about that ad infinitum, 00:04:47.92\00:04:49.48 but briefly, what's depression? 00:04:49.52\00:04:51.05 And help me understand the difference between severe 00:04:51.09\00:04:56.02 and, and, and extreme and these various forms. 00:04:56.06\00:04:59.69 >>Dr. Nedley: Yes. So, a major depression is actually 00:04:59.73\00:05:02.66 a constellation of symptoms. And I use the psychiatric bible; 00:05:02.70\00:05:07.17 the Diagnostic Statistical Manual gives us 00:05:07.20\00:05:10.14 nine hallmark symptoms of depression. 00:05:10.17\00:05:12.27 You don't have to have all nine of them, 00:05:12.31\00:05:14.54 but you have to have five of those nine. 00:05:14.58\00:05:17.38 But two of the classic are deep sadness-- 00:05:17.41\00:05:20.32 which you may not even have and still have depression-- 00:05:20.35\00:05:22.88 and apathy. This is where you wake up in the morning 00:05:22.92\00:05:25.92 and you're not excited about the day. 00:05:25.95\00:05:28.12 You get up out of duty 00:05:28.16\00:05:30.16 but not because you're interested in the day. 00:05:30.19\00:05:33.16 And that will happen not just once in a while, 00:05:33.19\00:05:35.46 but for a depressed person it'll be there for, you know, 00:05:35.50\00:05:38.10 at least two weeks. 00:05:38.13\00:05:39.80 In addition to that, there'll be energy issues. 00:05:39.83\00:05:42.47 There'll be sleep issues, either wanting to sleep 00:05:42.50\00:05:44.84 all the time or not being able to sleep, 00:05:44.87\00:05:47.48 and waking up too early and not being able to go back to sleep. 00:05:47.51\00:05:51.18 Then there's more irritability than there used to be. 00:05:51.21\00:05:54.28 And then focus and concentration issues 00:05:54.32\00:05:57.39 can also be a major problem, where you're reading something 00:05:57.42\00:06:00.72 that's interesting to you, you get to the bottom of the page, 00:06:00.76\00:06:03.66 and you forget what was at the top of the page. 00:06:03.69\00:06:05.93 And you have to go back and read it again, 00:06:05.96\00:06:07.60 and it might even happen again. 00:06:07.60\00:06:09.16 And that can be a sign of both anxiety and depression. 00:06:09.20\00:06:12.97 >>John: But you're not saying one of those means 00:06:13.00\00:06:15.27 you have depression. You're saying there's nine points; 00:06:15.30\00:06:17.61 if you have five, that qualifies you. 00:06:17.64\00:06:19.41 >>Dr. Nedley: Correct. >>John: So I don't want anyone 00:06:19.44\00:06:20.81 to think because they can't focus on a page, that means 00:06:20.84\00:06:24.15 too much, but it might. >>Dr. Nedley: It might. 00:06:24.18\00:06:25.98 >>John: Yeah. >>Dr. Nedley: It might, yeah. 00:06:26.01\00:06:27.15 >>John: Taken together with other-- 00:06:27.18\00:06:28.42 >>Dr. Nedley: Yeah. >>John: ...things. 00:06:28.45\00:06:29.42 We're going to get to the cure, if you like, 00:06:29.45\00:06:31.62 the treatment for depression 00:06:31.65\00:06:32.99 in a moment, but I wanna-- >>Dr. Nedley: Sure. 00:06:33.02\00:06:34.36 >>John: ...ask you this. See, we, we, we've spoken 00:06:34.39\00:06:36.22 about this before. Ten years ago we talked about this. 00:06:36.26\00:06:38.39 >>Dr. Nedley: Right. 00:06:38.43\00:06:39.33 >>John: And society has known for decades 00:06:39.36\00:06:41.26 we have a great problem in this area. 00:06:41.30\00:06:43.26 What's happened in the last 10 years 00:06:43.30\00:06:44.97 in terms of depression and anxiety? 00:06:45.00\00:06:47.50 >>Dr. Nedley: The rates have gone up astronomically 00:06:47.54\00:06:50.11 in the last 10 years. 00:06:50.14\00:06:51.61 And, you know, what has also shifted is depression used to be 00:06:51.64\00:06:56.01 the older you get, the more likely you're going to get it. 00:06:56.04\00:06:59.35 And now we're seeing this big peak among young people, 00:06:59.38\00:07:03.08 adolescents, uh, teenagers, even pre-teenagers, 00:07:03.12\00:07:07.02 and particularly those in their 20s-- 00:07:07.06\00:07:10.43 off the charts in regards to depression and anxiety levels. 00:07:10.46\00:07:14.50 And that's changed over the last 10 years. 00:07:14.56\00:07:16.40 >>John: And why is that? 00:07:16.43\00:07:17.80 >>Dr. Nedley: The reason is actually the smartphone usage. 00:07:17.83\00:07:22.60 Uh, it wasn't till about 10 or 11 years ago 00:07:22.64\00:07:26.78 that about half of Americans owned a smartphone. 00:07:26.81\00:07:29.91 And now that smartphone is actually able to distract them 00:07:29.94\00:07:35.02 very easily. And when we are driven to distraction, 00:07:35.05\00:07:40.26 it actually decreases an area of our frontal lobe 00:07:40.29\00:07:43.36 that is precisely the area that's needed 00:07:43.39\00:07:45.96 for managing distressing emotions. 00:07:45.99\00:07:49.06 And so, it's not the smartphone itself, per se, 00:07:49.10\00:07:52.90 but the normal use of the smartphone 00:07:52.93\00:07:55.54 where we're allowing ourself to get distracted by Snapchats, 00:07:55.57\00:07:59.44 texts, push notifications, and even when we get on there 00:07:59.47\00:08:04.51 to do something, we forget why we got on there to do something, 00:08:04.55\00:08:08.75 and we immediately see a text or an email or things like that, 00:08:08.78\00:08:12.85 and that division of attention actually causes 00:08:12.89\00:08:16.12 biochemical, uh, consequences in the brain, 00:08:16.16\00:08:20.46 and those biochemical consequences increase 00:08:20.50\00:08:24.17 the rates of depression and anxiety. 00:08:24.20\00:08:25.83 >>John: So, in recent years it has become much worse. 00:08:25.87\00:08:28.77 In recent years it's affecting far greater numbers 00:08:28.80\00:08:32.34 of younger people. Okay. 00:08:32.37\00:08:34.21 We're going to talk about what a person can do 00:08:34.24\00:08:36.85 about depression and anxiety. 00:08:36.88\00:08:40.05 My guest is Dr. Neil Nedley, president of Nedley Health. 00:08:40.08\00:08:43.82 In just a moment we will talk 00:08:43.85\00:08:45.92 about what a person can actually do. 00:08:45.95\00:08:48.46 Dr. Nedley said a moment ago 00:08:48.49\00:08:50.03 there is successful treatment for depression and anxiety. 00:08:50.06\00:08:54.66 We'll find out what that is straight ahead. 00:08:54.73\00:08:57.47 ¤[upbeat music swells and ends]¤¤ 00:08:57.50\00:09:03.51 >>Announcer: With economic instability, 00:09:06.11\00:09:07.81 interpersonal challenges, and the use of social media 00:09:07.84\00:09:10.68 on the rise, rates of depression and anxiety have skyrocketed. 00:09:10.71\00:09:14.92 Call now for your free copy 00:09:14.95\00:09:17.35 of "Finding Lasting Healing for Depression and Anxiety" 00:09:17.39\00:09:20.49 and learn helpful and practical methods 00:09:20.52\00:09:22.99 that have been scientifically proven to benefit mental health. 00:09:23.02\00:09:26.13 Call 800-253-3000. 00:09:26.16\00:09:28.73 That's 800-253-3000. 00:09:28.76\00:09:31.73 Or visit us online at iiwoffer.com. 00:09:31.77\00:09:35.77 >>John Bradshaw: Welcome back to "It Is Written." 00:09:36.77\00:09:38.41 Thanks so much for joining me. I'm John Bradshaw. 00:09:38.44\00:09:40.34 With me, my guest is Dr. Neil Nedley, 00:09:40.38\00:09:42.48 the president of Nedley Health. 00:09:42.51\00:09:44.45 Dr. Nedley, you--we're about to start talking about 00:09:44.48\00:09:47.98 successful treatment for depression. 00:09:48.02\00:09:50.59 Give us a little background here. 00:09:50.62\00:09:51.59 I said for a quarter of a century now 00:09:51.62\00:09:53.29 you've been successfully treating patients. 00:09:53.32\00:09:55.42 >>Dr. Neil Nedley: Correct. >>John: Uh, give me a, 00:09:55.46\00:09:56.99 just a very quick overview. 00:09:57.03\00:09:59.69 What do you see walk in the door? What do you see walk out? 00:09:59.73\00:10:04.27 Once we help people understand what the, the reality is 00:10:04.30\00:10:08.20 of successful treatment, then we'll talk about the treatment. 00:10:08.24\00:10:10.37 >>Dr. Nedley: Okay. So, what we see typically walk in the door 00:10:10.41\00:10:13.81 is someone who is severely depressed 00:10:13.84\00:10:17.18 and also thinking about ending their life. 00:10:17.21\00:10:19.71 At least most of them now that see us 00:10:19.75\00:10:22.42 think that they would be better off dead. 00:10:22.45\00:10:24.99 And they're actually convinced of that, uh, 00:10:25.02\00:10:27.02 when they come to the program. 00:10:27.06\00:10:28.89 It's affected their family life. It's affected their work life. 00:10:28.92\00:10:32.59 It's affected their feelings about themselves. 00:10:32.63\00:10:35.43 Uh, and it has also, uh, caused them to even think 00:10:35.46\00:10:40.40 that they're worthless or that they're of no value. 00:10:40.44\00:10:43.94 And so, uh, that is more of the typical. 00:10:43.97\00:10:46.17 Of course, there can be a lot of varieties, um, concerning that. 00:10:46.21\00:10:49.61 Uh, but on top of it, they'll also have anxiety. 00:10:49.64\00:10:53.05 They'll have social anxiety, 00:10:53.08\00:10:54.92 which is more of our typical patient now. 00:10:54.95\00:10:57.45 Uh, they don't really want to interact with people-- 00:10:57.49\00:11:01.12 fear of embarrassment, 00:11:01.16\00:11:02.62 uh, fear of being exposed in some way, shape, or form, 00:11:02.66\00:11:06.86 fear of being judged. 00:11:06.90\00:11:08.56 And so, uh, this is our, um, our typical patient 00:11:08.60\00:11:11.37 that comes in. And of course, they're pretty reticent because 00:11:11.40\00:11:14.20 they're in a new setting, and this has been, you know, 00:11:14.24\00:11:16.71 a big, big challenge for them to even come to the program. 00:11:16.74\00:11:20.38 And on day three, they're not sure 00:11:20.41\00:11:23.78 that they've actually made the right decision 00:11:23.81\00:11:26.28 because it takes time for the therapies 00:11:26.31\00:11:29.18 to actually start changing the brain. 00:11:29.22\00:11:31.52 By day four, they're actually starting to feel better. 00:11:31.55\00:11:35.29 By day seven, it's pretty amazing the difference. 00:11:35.32\00:11:39.06 And by day 10, when they're walking out the door, they say, 00:11:39.09\00:11:42.80 "I don't even really realize who that person was. 00:11:42.83\00:11:45.97 I'm so different now." 00:11:46.00\00:11:47.84 They are motivated. They're self-motivated. 00:11:47.87\00:11:51.37 They're actually sleeping better. 00:11:51.41\00:11:53.14 They're able to interact with people that they don't know, 00:11:53.17\00:11:56.58 uh, and not have that anxiety and fear of judgment. 00:11:56.61\00:12:00.78 They realize that they're a valuable human being, 00:12:00.82\00:12:04.12 and they realize that they have much that they can give 00:12:04.15\00:12:06.92 to their families and, and their work and the world around them. 00:12:06.96\00:12:11.43 And so, depression scale goes from severe, on average, 00:12:11.46\00:12:14.96 to no depression when they're leaving. 00:12:15.00\00:12:17.23 That doesn't mean it's solved. 00:12:17.27\00:12:18.93 They still have to continue to do the things 00:12:18.97\00:12:21.57 that made them better in the program, 00:12:21.60\00:12:23.87 and then they'll even get better yet, uh, two weeks 00:12:23.91\00:12:28.44 after they're in their home environment. 00:12:28.48\00:12:30.48 Some of them get fearful because they say, "I got better here. 00:12:30.51\00:12:33.05 "Now I'm going home, where I was really bad, 00:12:33.08\00:12:35.52 and I'm getting backed into the same place." 00:12:35.55\00:12:38.02 But actually, as they utilize the tools that we've given them, 00:12:38.05\00:12:42.26 they'll actually feel better two weeks after being home 00:12:42.29\00:12:45.23 than the day they left the program. 00:12:45.26\00:12:46.80 >>John: See, this sounds, this sounds miraculous, 00:12:46.83\00:12:49.96 [Dr. Nedley chuckles] like, like people are being reborn. 00:12:50.00\00:12:52.70 But this is what God wants for a person's life. 00:12:52.73\00:12:54.87 And I, I think, as we talk about depression, 00:12:54.90\00:12:57.37 it's really important to point out that depression 00:12:57.41\00:13:00.21 isn't something that the average person can just get over-- 00:13:00.24\00:13:03.88 "Why don't you pull yourself together?" 00:13:03.91\00:13:05.88 >>Dr. Nedley: Right. 00:13:05.91\00:13:06.82 >>John: This is-- depression's a monster. 00:13:06.85\00:13:08.58 And it absolutely disables people. Okay. 00:13:08.62\00:13:12.12 Let's talk about the successful treatment. What works? 00:13:12.15\00:13:18.33 And I want you to share with me what works scientifically-- 00:13:18.36\00:13:21.36 >>Dr. Nedley: Sure. >>John: ...and verifiably. 00:13:21.40\00:13:23.40 >>Dr. Nedley: Okay. >>John: Okay, so, 00:13:23.43\00:13:24.73 what really helps? 00:13:24.77\00:13:26.20 >>Dr. Nedley: It's actually a combination 00:13:26.23\00:13:27.80 of a number of simple factors we've put together. 00:13:27.84\00:13:30.64 >>John: Simple factors? >>Dr. Nedley: Simple factors, 00:13:30.67\00:13:32.44 like drinking more water. 00:13:32.47\00:13:33.88 >>John: We're talking about...an absolutely disabling condition-- 00:13:33.91\00:13:38.88 >>Dr. Nedley: Right. 00:13:38.91\00:13:39.98 >>John: ...where the people suffering from this-- 00:13:40.02\00:13:41.45 >>Dr. Nedley: Yes. 00:13:41.48\00:13:42.68 >>John: ...believe in their hearts that the world would be 00:13:42.72\00:13:44.39 a better place without them? >>Dr. Nedley: Right. 00:13:44.42\00:13:46.39 >>John: And you're starting with drink more water? 00:13:46.42\00:13:49.16 >>Dr. Nedley: Drink more water. >>John: Okay, okay. 00:13:49.19\00:13:51.06 I don't want to hear too much more about the treatment. 00:13:51.09\00:13:52.93 [Dr. Nedley chuckles] Take, take 20 or 30 seconds 00:13:52.96\00:13:54.63 and tell me why does that kind of simple thing help. 00:13:54.66\00:13:59.00 What, what's going on in a life 00:13:59.03\00:14:01.10 that something like that could even make a difference? 00:14:01.14\00:14:03.97 >>Dr. Nedley: Well, our brain cells work better 00:14:04.01\00:14:06.44 when they're hydrated. And nothing hydrates like water. 00:14:06.47\00:14:10.65 All the other water substitutes actually take away 00:14:10.68\00:14:13.85 from the hydration of our neurons 00:14:13.88\00:14:15.62 and our ability to have good synaptic activity. 00:14:15.65\00:14:18.35 >>John: Okay. >>Dr. Nedley: And so, 00:14:18.39\00:14:19.42 studies have shown, actually, 00:14:19.45\00:14:20.99 if we just take someone from less than two glasses of water 00:14:21.02\00:14:24.09 per day, which the typical person has, 00:14:24.13\00:14:27.13 to greater than five glasses of water a day, 00:14:27.20\00:14:30.27 their rates of depression and anxiety will actually start 00:14:30.30\00:14:33.67 to improve within a week of that treatment. 00:14:33.70\00:14:36.44 >>John: So what else is effective in the treatment 00:14:36.47\00:14:39.17 of depression and anxiety? Simple things. 00:14:39.21\00:14:41.34 >>Dr. Nedley: Becoming physically fit. 00:14:41.38\00:14:43.71 Physical fitness is actually better for our brain 00:14:43.75\00:14:46.51 than it is our body. 00:14:46.55\00:14:48.28 And cardio exercises actually improve a protein level 00:14:48.32\00:14:53.76 in our brain called brain- derived neurotrophic factor. 00:14:53.79\00:14:57.13 It's kind of a brain fertilizer, 00:14:57.16\00:14:59.29 and it helps the brain get ready for positive changes. 00:14:59.33\00:15:02.86 So, there are some people that are fit 00:15:02.90\00:15:05.33 that come to our program. 00:15:05.37\00:15:06.50 Their causes are different, but most people that come 00:15:06.53\00:15:09.27 are not at the fitness level they should be at, 00:15:09.30\00:15:12.27 and that's why we have fitness experts, and in 10 days, 00:15:12.31\00:15:16.51 and they're going to actually show 00:15:16.54\00:15:17.85 measurable fitness improvement in their cardio 00:15:17.88\00:15:21.62 and a lot of different parameters. 00:15:21.65\00:15:23.18 And that will mirror very much, uh, 00:15:23.22\00:15:25.65 their success during the program. 00:15:25.69\00:15:27.46 >>John: Give me another one, 00:15:27.49\00:15:28.49 and then something I want to run by you. 00:15:28.52\00:15:31.16 >>Dr. Nedley: So, another one is actually light--light therapy. 00:15:31.19\00:15:35.70 So we utilize light in the morning. 00:15:35.73\00:15:39.17 Actually we have them wake up at the same time every morning, 00:15:39.20\00:15:43.64 and then they're exposed to a bright light that actually sets 00:15:43.67\00:15:49.08 their body clock, their circadian rhythm, 00:15:49.11\00:15:51.51 and it also starts the production of serotonin 00:15:51.55\00:15:55.05 in the brain. And those two factors are very important. 00:15:55.08\00:15:59.29 It's going to improve their energy level 00:15:59.32\00:16:00.86 throughout the day, and it's going to improve their ability 00:16:00.89\00:16:04.79 to go to sleep at night. 00:16:04.83\00:16:06.46 In fact, that's one of the best sleep aids, 00:16:06.49\00:16:08.50 is a light therapy box utilized upon awakening in the morning. 00:16:08.53\00:16:14.04 So, they're only exposed to it for about 30 minutes. 00:16:14.07\00:16:16.77 Then we get 'em out and exercise. 00:16:16.81\00:16:19.07 And those simple treatments of hydration, physical exercise, 00:16:19.11\00:16:23.45 and light therapy start the process. 00:16:23.48\00:16:26.31 >>John: You said "simple treatments." 00:16:26.35\00:16:28.65 They are profoundly simple. [Dr. Nedley chuckles] 00:16:28.68\00:16:30.82 It, it seems that what you're doing is actually treating 00:16:30.85\00:16:35.59 the causes of depression-- 00:16:35.62\00:16:38.23 not enough activity, not enough water, 00:16:38.26\00:16:40.06 not enough light. >>Dr. Nedley: Yes. 00:16:40.10\00:16:41.53 >>John: You're, you're actually taking us down 00:16:41.56\00:16:42.80 to the granular level in treating the very things 00:16:42.83\00:16:45.40 that cause depression. >>Dr. Nedley: Exactly. 00:16:45.43\00:16:47.30 >>John: That's not how depression is typically treated. 00:16:47.34\00:16:48.90 It's typically treated-- 00:16:48.94\00:16:49.90 well, we have a range of possible medications. 00:16:49.94\00:16:52.71 "We'll try this one; come back in a, in a week or two 00:16:52.74\00:16:55.21 or whatever, and maybe we'll change your medication." 00:16:55.24\00:16:57.91 >>Dr. Nedley: Mm-hmm. >>John: As a society, 00:16:57.95\00:16:59.21 we're really stuck on medication, 00:16:59.25\00:17:00.88 as though it's the solution for everything. 00:17:00.92\00:17:04.22 How in the world do we change our thinking? 00:17:04.25\00:17:08.32 >>Dr. Nedley: Well, we have to educate the public that 00:17:08.36\00:17:10.73 it's not just a lack of medicine that's causing depression. 00:17:10.76\00:17:14.86 Uh, it's actually the lack of good brain biochemistry 00:17:14.93\00:17:19.37 that has to do with things like nutrition, 00:17:19.40\00:17:22.04 what we're putting into our body, 00:17:22.07\00:17:23.87 and what we're doing with our body. 00:17:23.91\00:17:25.37 >>John: What do some of the medications actually do 00:17:25.41\00:17:27.24 to the brain? 00:17:27.28\00:17:28.81 >>Dr. Nedley: So, how the typical antidepressant works, 00:17:28.84\00:17:33.15 it's not helping the brain to produce 00:17:33.18\00:17:35.55 more of a neurotransmitter, nor is it helping the receptors. 00:17:35.58\00:17:39.79 When we get to the root cause, we're going to actually help 00:17:39.82\00:17:43.06 the brain produce more of the neurotransmitter, 00:17:43.09\00:17:46.06 and we're going to be helping at the receptor level 00:17:46.09\00:17:48.83 so that the synaptic activity goes up. 00:17:48.86\00:17:51.73 How the drugs work is that they actually plug 00:17:51.77\00:17:55.40 the reuptake channels in the releasing neuron 00:17:55.44\00:18:00.14 of the substance they're trying to treat. 00:18:00.18\00:18:01.81 So, if they're wanting to have 00:18:01.84\00:18:03.04 more serotonin synaptic activity, 00:18:03.08\00:18:06.08 they plug the serotonin reuptake channels. 00:18:06.11\00:18:09.85 And that allows more serotonin in the synapse. 00:18:09.88\00:18:12.95 The problem with it is now we have to make even more serotonin 00:18:12.99\00:18:17.23 because that serotonin's not being vacuumed 00:18:17.26\00:18:19.23 back up into the brain. 00:18:19.26\00:18:20.86 And so it produces a short-term benefit--by "short-term," 00:18:20.90\00:18:23.80 maybe six months, nine months--and after that, 00:18:23.83\00:18:27.30 now the brain is even shorter in serotonin than it was 00:18:27.34\00:18:31.04 before you started to use the drug, and now you're needing 00:18:31.07\00:18:34.08 dosage increases; you're needing additional medicines; 00:18:34.11\00:18:37.38 you're needing a number of other factors to try to help 00:18:37.41\00:18:41.55 the neuron of its even more severe depletion of serotonin. 00:18:41.58\00:18:46.05 >>John: Simple treatments that work, 00:18:46.09\00:18:48.22 a complex, challenging diagnosis, 00:18:48.26\00:18:50.66 but simple treatments given by God 00:18:50.69\00:18:53.66 that make all the difference. 00:18:53.70\00:18:55.23 More on depression with Dr. Neil Nedley in just a moment. 00:18:55.26\00:18:59.83 ¤[upbeat music swells and ends]¤¤ 00:18:59.87\00:19:05.94 >>John: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 00:19:07.48\00:19:09.41 exists because of the kindness of people just like you. 00:19:09.44\00:19:12.81 To support this international life-changing ministry, 00:19:12.85\00:19:16.08 please call us now at 800-253-3000. 00:19:16.12\00:19:20.32 You can send your tax-deductible gift 00:19:20.36\00:19:21.82 to the address on your screen, 00:19:21.86\00:19:23.29 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 00:19:23.32\00:19:27.13 Thank you for your prayers and for your financial support. 00:19:27.13\00:19:29.93 Our number again is 800-253-3000, 00:19:29.96\00:19:34.10 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 00:19:34.14\00:19:37.14 >>John: Most everybody wants to live a little longer, 00:19:37.77\00:19:40.98 a little healthier, and a little happier, 00:19:41.01\00:19:44.85 but the question is, how can you experience that life? Let me ask you this. 00:20:59.19\00:21:01.46 When it comes to, uh, depression, 00:21:01.49\00:21:04.23 what role does nutrition play? 00:21:04.26\00:21:06.06 Well, what role does nutrition play in the treatment? 00:21:06.09\00:21:10.27 >>Dr. Nedley: It plays a major role. 00:21:10.30\00:21:11.93 In fact, it is well documented now that nutritional medicine 00:21:11.97\00:21:17.17 is one of the best therapies for depression and anxiety-- 00:21:17.21\00:21:21.11 and directed nutritional supplements to actually help 00:21:21.14\00:21:25.18 the individual with the genetic challenges 00:21:25.21\00:21:27.68 that they might have as well. 00:21:27.72\00:21:29.12 >>John: Okay, so what would that look like? 00:21:29.15\00:21:30.55 >>Dr. Nedley: For instance, uh, taking a S-adenosylmethionine 00:21:30.59\00:21:36.02 to help the person methylate and be able to make 00:21:36.06\00:21:39.26 more serotonin and dopamine in their brain. 00:21:39.29\00:21:41.23 >>John: Okay. 00:21:41.26\00:21:42.23 >>Dr. Nedley: If they have a genetic defect, 00:21:42.26\00:21:44.17 they're going to have certain personality traits 00:21:44.20\00:21:46.40 that go along with that defect, 00:21:46.43\00:21:48.00 like a calm exterior and a tense interior, 00:21:48.04\00:21:51.54 tendencies for obsessions, tendencies for addictions, 00:21:51.57\00:21:56.58 and actually being highly competitive. 00:21:56.61\00:21:59.18 Often it's the attorneys or even the sports heroes 00:21:59.21\00:22:02.82 that suffer from mental health issues, and they just need 00:22:02.85\00:22:06.92 more methionine or S-adenosylmethionine 00:22:06.96\00:22:10.36 to help them methylate better. That's a nutritional therapy. 00:22:10.39\00:22:14.13 That is something that's natural; 00:22:14.20\00:22:15.56 it's not something you can get in a pharmaceutical agent 00:22:15.60\00:22:18.77 because the trademark organization won't allow 00:22:18.80\00:22:22.74 something natural to be trademarked. 00:22:22.77\00:22:24.57 It has to be unnatural in order to get it trademarked. 00:22:24.61\00:22:28.08 And so, natural therapies often are superior. 00:22:28.11\00:22:31.75 >>John: Diet--you mentioned nutrition--what about diet? 00:22:31.78\00:22:33.82 What, what am I eating that's helping me 00:22:33.85\00:22:36.45 or mitigating against good mental health? 00:22:36.48\00:22:40.12 >>Dr. Nedley: Yeah, exactly. So, we need to get 00:22:40.16\00:22:42.02 tryptophan in your diet in order to make serotonin. 00:22:42.06\00:22:45.29 And we need to get the tryptophan into the brain. 00:22:45.33\00:22:48.16 So, we don't just give IV serotonin 00:22:48.20\00:22:50.90 because serotonin won't even be picked up by the brain. 00:22:50.93\00:22:53.77 The blood-brain barrier prevents it from going across. 00:22:53.80\00:22:56.14 So we need to get the tryptophan, 00:22:56.17\00:22:58.27 even that's too large to get into the brain, 00:22:58.31\00:23:00.54 so we have to have it with specific carriers. 00:23:00.58\00:23:03.61 And it turns out the best carriers are foods 00:23:03.65\00:23:06.11 that have tryptophan and natural carbohydrates in them. 00:23:06.15\00:23:10.19 And those are going to be more of your plant-based foods. 00:23:10.22\00:23:13.19 One of the reasons why a plant-based diet 00:23:13.22\00:23:15.42 has been shown to be superior to other diets, 00:23:15.46\00:23:19.09 improving depression and anxiety in as little as two weeks, 00:23:19.13\00:23:23.13 once we shift over to a, a highly antioxidant diet 00:23:23.16\00:23:28.37 that has adequate tryptophan and tyrosine 00:23:28.40\00:23:30.94 to make the neurotransmitters we need. 00:23:30.97\00:23:32.61 >>John: So, you can eat certain foods 00:23:32.64\00:23:34.34 that are going to help you. >>Dr. Nedley: Exactly. 00:23:34.38\00:23:35.78 >>John: Generally speaking, they're more plant-based. 00:23:35.81\00:23:37.88 >>Dr. Nedley: Correct. >>John: Okay, okay. 00:23:37.91\00:23:39.28 You mentioned genetics a moment ago. 00:23:39.31\00:23:41.85 I want to ask you about this. 00:23:41.88\00:23:43.22 Are some people genetically predisposed to depression? 00:23:43.25\00:23:46.99 Is that the case? And-- >>Dr. Nedley: Oh, absolutely. 00:23:47.02\00:23:48.66 >>John: Well, if so, what do you do about that 00:23:48.69\00:23:49.89 if it's your genes? >>Dr. Nedley: Well, fortunately, 00:23:49.92\00:23:52.39 we can shut down those bad genes. 00:23:52.43\00:23:55.10 And so, when people come to our program, we measure 00:23:55.13\00:23:58.27 their genetics--and we also measure their epigenetics-- 00:23:58.30\00:24:02.24 to see if that gene is active or not. 00:24:02.27\00:24:04.77 And fortunately, it's not medication, 00:24:04.81\00:24:07.18 but it's natural therapies 00:24:07.21\00:24:09.11 that can actually deactivate that gene. 00:24:09.14\00:24:12.05 And then we can actually measure the before-and-after results. 00:24:12.08\00:24:15.42 We can see that the gene was very active to start out with, 00:24:15.45\00:24:18.62 and within a few weeks, we remeasure. 00:24:18.65\00:24:21.22 One of the reason why we do follow-up on our patients 00:24:21.26\00:24:23.43 after they get back is we're actually doing 00:24:23.46\00:24:25.13 follow-up blood work to show that 00:24:25.16\00:24:27.30 that gene has been deactivated. 00:24:27.36\00:24:29.50 Or if it hasn't, there might be some other therapies 00:24:29.53\00:24:31.93 that we can put into the equation that are simple, 00:24:31.97\00:24:34.87 side effect free, 00:24:34.90\00:24:35.97 that'll actually shut down that mutated gene. 00:24:36.00\00:24:38.51 >>John: Thank God there are 00:24:38.54\00:24:39.81 simple solutions. >>Dr. Nedley: Yes. 00:24:39.84\00:24:41.81 >>John: Appreciate what you are doing. 00:24:41.84\00:24:44.41 What I'm hearing as I listen between the lines 00:24:44.45\00:24:46.72 is, is you're following a very, a simple-- 00:24:46.75\00:24:50.22 I don't mean in a derogatory way-- 00:24:50.25\00:24:51.99 very biblical plan because God wants us 00:24:52.02\00:24:55.59 to have a sound mind. >>Dr. Nedley: Mm-hmm. 00:24:55.62\00:24:57.46 >>John: Can anyone have that sound mind that God is offering? 00:24:57.49\00:25:01.40 >>Dr. Nedley: Absolutely-- >>John: Yeah. 00:25:01.43\00:25:02.80 >>Dr. Nedley: ...absolutely, we, we, the design of our brain 00:25:02.83\00:25:06.20 is tremendous because of its ability to change itself. 00:25:06.23\00:25:12.57 It can dramatically improve under the right conditions. 00:25:12.61\00:25:15.91 And that brain can not only learn new things; 00:25:15.94\00:25:18.91 it can start making better neurotransmitters. 00:25:18.95\00:25:21.45 It can have better receptors. 00:25:21.48\00:25:23.59 It can have much more fulfillment and success. 00:25:23.62\00:25:27.79 Our brains are capable of amazing things 00:25:27.82\00:25:30.76 if we just foster 'em in the right way. 00:25:30.79\00:25:33.33 >>John: There's one thing I would like you to remember. 00:25:33.36\00:25:34.83 That's this; the Bible says, 00:25:34.86\00:25:36.73 "Thou wilt"--speaking about God-- 00:25:36.77\00:25:38.17 "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, 00:25:38.20\00:25:40.97 whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee." 00:25:41.00\00:25:43.14 You read that in Isaiah 26:3. 00:25:43.17\00:25:45.97 "Perfect peace." >>Dr. Nedley: Mmm. 00:25:46.01\00:25:47.74 >>John: The Bible says, "Let this mind be in you, 00:25:47.78\00:25:50.28 which was also in Christ Jesus," 00:25:50.31\00:25:52.11 speaking certainly of an attitude, an approach, 00:25:52.15\00:25:54.85 a humility, but definitely speaking about a mind. 00:25:54.88\00:25:58.95 When we look, Dr. Nedley, at earth's last great crisis, 00:25:58.99\00:26:01.99 it's a battle for the mind. >>Dr. Nedley: Absolutely. 00:26:02.02\00:26:04.13 >>John: Mark of the beast, the seal of God, 00:26:04.16\00:26:06.03 affixed to the minds of those who receive them. 00:26:06.06\00:26:11.10 I think there are good days ahead. 00:26:11.13\00:26:12.17 There's reason for every last person to be hopeful. 00:26:12.20\00:26:14.20 >>Dr. Nedley: Absolutely. 00:26:14.24\00:26:15.40 >>John: I appreciate you sharing that hope.
