Thanks for joining me. 00:00:21.15\00:00:23.82 Heroes are big business today. Batman, Batwoman, 00:00:23.85\00:00:28.36 Captain Marvel, Ironman, Superman, the Avengers-- 00:00:28.39\00:00:33.50 fantasy figures imbued with superhuman, 00:00:33.53\00:00:36.40 godlike characteristics. 00:00:36.43\00:00:39.30 Now, while it doesn't take a genius 00:00:39.33\00:00:41.34 to figure out that this might not be the best, 00:00:41.37\00:00:44.11 most spiritually healthy material 00:00:44.14\00:00:46.61 for our children to watch, 00:00:46.64\00:00:48.74 or adults, for that matter, 00:00:48.78\00:00:50.91 people are watching. 00:00:50.95\00:00:53.25 So many that one recent superhero movie grossed 00:00:53.28\00:00:56.05 almost three billion dollars at the global box office 00:00:56.08\00:01:00.19 on a budget of almost $400 million. 00:01:00.22\00:01:04.73 But what's a hero, really? 00:01:04.76\00:01:07.66 James Shaw Jr. was in a fast food restaurant near Nashville 00:01:08.53\00:01:12.40 in 2018, when a mentally unstable man began shooting. 00:01:12.43\00:01:16.97 Shaw was shot at twice. 00:01:17.01\00:01:19.31 When he noticed a pause in the shooting, 00:01:19.34\00:01:21.31 he rushed the shooter, pulled the rifle from the man's hand, 00:01:21.34\00:01:25.98 and then shoved him out of the restaurant. 00:01:26.01\00:01:28.32 Without James Shaw's courageous intervention, 00:01:28.35\00:01:30.59 it's almost certain that many more than the four who died 00:01:30.62\00:01:34.72 would have lost their lives. 00:01:34.76\00:01:36.76 At a news conference hours later, Shaw said this: 00:01:36.79\00:01:40.90 "I did that completely out of a selfish act. 00:01:40.93\00:01:44.10 "I was completely doing it just to save myself. 00:01:44.13\00:01:47.90 "I did save other people, but I don't want people to think 00:01:47.94\00:01:50.61 "that I was the Terminator or Superman or anybody like that. 00:01:50.64\00:01:54.41 "I figured if I was going to die, 00:01:54.44\00:01:56.58 he was going to have to work for it." 00:01:56.61\00:01:58.71 He said, "I haven't had any specific combat training. 00:01:58.75\00:02:03.12 I just fight my daughter every night so I can put her to bed." 00:02:03.15\00:02:07.66 He went on to say, "I'll say it again. 00:02:07.69\00:02:10.59 "I didn't really fight that man to save everybody else. 00:02:10.63\00:02:14.00 "I know that might not be a popular thing, 00:02:14.00\00:02:15.63 "but I'm really honest. I'm going to be honest to the core: 00:02:15.66\00:02:18.97 I took the gun so I could get myself out." 00:02:19.00\00:02:22.90 But that was heroic. 00:02:22.94\00:02:25.61 A man put his life on the line and saved not only himself, 00:02:25.64\00:02:29.11 but others as well. 00:02:29.14\00:02:31.11 A 69-year-old man who saw a woman being attacked 00:02:31.15\00:02:34.12 by a polar bear in Manitoba, Canada, grabbed a shovel 00:02:34.15\00:02:38.55 and fought the bear off before the bear turned on him. 00:02:38.59\00:02:42.62 He stayed a week in a hospital having an ear reattached 00:02:42.66\00:02:46.39 and having other wounds taken care of. 00:02:46.43\00:02:49.06 A hero? 00:02:49.10\00:02:50.67 Sounds a lot like one. 00:02:50.70\00:02:52.50 Are sports figures heroes? 00:02:52.53\00:02:54.84 Well, some probably are. 00:02:54.87\00:02:57.41 Baseballer Ted Williams spent five years in the military 00:02:57.44\00:03:00.64 before going on to become a Hall of Fame baseball player. 00:03:00.68\00:03:04.18 Baseball's Jackie Robinson was a pioneer who changed 00:03:04.21\00:03:07.32 the sporting landscape and impacted society in a huge way. 00:03:07.35\00:03:12.12 Athlete Jesse Owens was born in poverty 00:03:12.15\00:03:15.16 but went on not only to win a clutch of Olympic gold medals 00:03:15.19\00:03:18.59 but to deliver a stunning message to a tyrant. 00:03:18.63\00:03:22.33 Terry Fox wasn't a sportsman, as such, 00:03:22.36\00:03:25.83 but a cancer survivor who attempted to run all the way 00:03:25.87\00:03:28.90 across Canada, 4,300 miles, to raise money for cancer research. 00:03:28.94\00:03:35.58 Fox's run started with little fanfare, 00:03:35.61\00:03:37.91 but, running on a prosthetic leg, he ran 3,339 miles, 00:03:37.95\00:03:43.52 making it all the way from St. John's, Newfoundland, 00:03:43.55\00:03:46.79 to Thunder Bay, Ontario. 00:03:46.82\00:03:49.22 He ran for 143 days on a prosthetic leg-- 00:03:49.26\00:03:53.60 remember, even as cancer was returning to his body. 00:03:53.63\00:03:58.00 The Terry Fox Research Institute reports that to date 00:03:58.03\00:04:01.97 800 million dollars has been raised in his name. 00:04:02.00\00:04:05.94 Terry Fox is a hero. 00:04:05.97\00:04:09.68 Society tosses the word "hero" around pretty easily, 00:04:09.71\00:04:13.05 especially when it comes to sports. 00:04:13.08\00:04:15.52 Now, we get it; the player does something spectacular, 00:04:15.55\00:04:18.29 a team wins, maybe a championship, 00:04:18.32\00:04:20.86 and we whip out that word, "hero." 00:04:20.89\00:04:23.19 We get it. 00:04:23.22\00:04:24.43 David Ortiz led the Boston Red Sox to a World Series title 00:04:24.46\00:04:28.06 for the first time in almost 90 years. 00:04:28.10\00:04:30.73 That's a big deal in the sporting world. 00:04:30.77\00:04:33.10 Evidently a great guy, an outstanding player. 00:04:33.13\00:04:36.14 He brought a lot of joy to a lot of people. But hero? 00:04:36.17\00:04:40.81 I mean, in a certain context, sure. 00:04:40.84\00:04:42.61 It, it, it's a bit like loving your spouse and loving your dog 00:04:42.64\00:04:46.72 and loving ice cream. 00:04:46.75\00:04:48.12 It's "love" every time, but it's not the same love. 00:04:48.15\00:04:53.56 Tom Brady wins a slew of Super Bowls. 00:04:53.59\00:04:56.42 Michael Jordan wins a collection of NBA titles. 00:04:56.46\00:04:58.86 Serena Williams dominates tennis for more than 20 years. 00:04:58.89\00:05:02.53 Usain Bolt wins eight Olympic track-and-field gold medals 00:05:02.56\00:05:06.67 and sets two world records. 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.44 Michael Phelps and his outrageous 00:05:08.47\00:05:10.54 23 Olympic gold medals. 00:05:10.57\00:05:13.04 They're all freakishly talented and outstanding 00:05:13.07\00:05:16.31 in their chosen fields, but as a general rule, 00:05:16.34\00:05:20.08 being really good at hitting a ball with a bat 00:05:20.12\00:05:22.35 or throwing a football or running fast 00:05:22.38\00:05:25.62 doesn't qualify you as a hero. 00:05:25.65\00:05:28.56 And I'm pretty sure each of the sports people I've named 00:05:28.59\00:05:31.33 would agree with that. 00:05:31.36\00:05:32.83 Great achievements, they've redefined their sports, 00:05:32.86\00:05:35.40 they've made a lot of people happy and done historic things, 00:05:35.43\00:05:37.80 and we call them heroes because, 00:05:37.83\00:05:40.27 well, that's the best word we can think of 00:05:40.30\00:05:41.94 when someone does something really remarkable. 00:05:41.97\00:05:44.87 The United States military has a special way of honoring 00:05:45.61\00:05:49.94 people we would classify as heroes. 00:05:49.98\00:05:54.02 The Medal of Honor is the United States' highest award 00:05:54.05\00:05:57.32 for military valor in action. 00:05:57.35\00:06:00.36 Those who receive the Medal of Honor have demonstrated 00:06:00.39\00:06:02.86 bravery, courage, sacrifice, and integrity. 00:06:02.89\00:06:08.60 More than 3,500 Medals of Honor have been awarded 00:06:08.63\00:06:11.70 to 3,511 individuals. 00:06:11.73\00:06:15.14 Five sets of brothers have received the award 00:06:15.17\00:06:17.24 and two father-and-son pairings; 00:06:17.27\00:06:19.64 Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, 00:06:19.67\00:06:22.81 and his son Theodore Jr., 00:06:22.84\00:06:25.05 and Arthur MacArthur and his son General Douglas MacArthur. 00:06:25.08\00:06:30.95 Once upon a time the Medal of Honor would be sent 00:06:30.99\00:06:33.92 through the mail, but more than 100 years ago, 00:06:33.96\00:06:36.93 regulations were changed, 00:06:36.96\00:06:38.49 stipulating that the medal must be presented 00:06:38.53\00:06:41.26 in a formal ceremony. 00:06:41.30\00:06:43.30 There are more than 60 Medal of Honor recipients alive today. 00:06:43.33\00:06:48.40 The first Medals of Honor awarded were presented 00:06:48.44\00:06:51.34 to the six Union Army volunteers who commandeered a train, 00:06:51.37\00:06:55.88 known as The General, in northern Georgia 00:06:55.91\00:06:58.51 and took it towards Chattanooga in the north, 00:06:58.55\00:07:01.18 damaging train lines and cutting telegraph wires as they went. 00:07:01.22\00:07:06.09 More than 1,500 Medals of Honor were awarded for valor 00:07:06.12\00:07:09.69 during the Civil War. 00:07:09.72\00:07:11.59 Almost 500 for World War II, 261 for Vietnam, 00:07:11.63\00:07:15.83 a 146 for the Korean War, 132 for World War I, 00:07:15.86\00:07:20.70 28 for the War on Terror, 00:07:20.74\00:07:24.51 and 965 for campaigns, conflicts, and for peacetime. 00:07:24.54\00:07:30.21 More than 2,400 have been awarded to U.S. Army personnel, 00:07:30.25\00:07:34.75 746 to those who've served in the Navy, 00:07:34.78\00:07:37.99 297 for the Marine Corps. 17 for the U.S. Air Force, 00:07:38.02\00:07:42.82 8 civilian, 5 foreign, 00:07:42.86\00:07:45.33 and 1 U.S. Coast Guard. 00:07:45.36\00:07:47.86 More than 90 African Americans have been awarded 00:07:47.86\00:07:50.97 the Medal of Honor. 00:07:51.00\00:07:51.83 That's a comparatively small number, 00:07:51.87\00:07:54.87 best explained by African Americans' place in society 00:07:54.90\00:07:58.27 up until the 1970s. 00:07:58.31\00:08:00.54 In fact, no African Americans were awarded the Medal of Honor 00:08:00.58\00:08:04.41 during World War I and World War II. 00:08:04.45\00:08:07.92 Those who were eventually honored 00:08:07.95\00:08:09.85 were honored decades after the fact, 00:08:09.88\00:08:12.75 in most cases posthumously. 00:08:12.79\00:08:15.86 Historian Glenn Knoblock wrote, 00:08:15.89\00:08:18.06 "It was not until the Vietnam War that black servicemen 00:08:18.09\00:08:22.50 "not only served on an equal footing with whites, 00:08:22.53\00:08:25.80 "but were also awarded the Medal of Honor 00:08:25.83\00:08:28.97 in the same proportion." 00:08:29.00\00:08:30.97 So who do you think is the greatest hero of them all? When His own followers wanted 00:20:09.10\00:20:12.44 to incinerate a Samaritan village, He rebuked them, 00:20:12.47\00:20:16.01 saying, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of, 00:20:16.04\00:20:19.81 "for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, 00:20:19.85\00:20:24.29 but to save them." 00:20:24.32\00:20:25.85 This Man was merciful in a way 00:20:25.89\00:20:28.12 that no one had ever seen before: 00:20:28.16\00:20:30.09 interrupting a funeral to raise a dead body 00:20:30.13\00:20:33.19 and reunite the young man with his mother, a widow, 00:20:33.23\00:20:36.40 a woman with no apparent means of support. 00:20:36.43\00:20:39.07 He was incredibly gracious. 00:20:39.10\00:20:41.90 When a tax collector who was short of stature climbed a tree 00:20:41.94\00:20:46.04 in order to get a glimpse of Jesus, 00:20:46.07\00:20:47.88 Jesus recognized the desire of the man's heart 00:20:47.91\00:20:50.51 and invited himself into the man's home, 00:20:50.55\00:20:53.28 something that really wasn't done 00:20:53.31\00:20:55.08 in that culture at that time. 00:20:55.12\00:20:57.09 That act scandalized the people, who said, 00:20:57.12\00:21:00.36 "He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner." 00:21:00.39\00:21:05.46 But instead of rejecting the man, 00:21:05.49\00:21:07.86 who set himself up as an enemy of his own people 00:21:07.86\00:21:10.37 by collecting taxes on behalf of an occupying power, 00:21:10.40\00:21:14.04 Jesus uttered these remarkable words: 00:21:14.07\00:21:17.87 "Today salvation has come to this house, 00:21:17.91\00:21:21.38 because he also is a son of Abraham." 00:21:21.41\00:21:24.71 And then He said, "For the Son of Man has come to seek 00:21:24.75\00:21:28.55 and to save that which was lost." 00:21:28.58\00:21:31.62 I mean, it goes on and on, right? 00:24:13.25\00:24:18.79 What do you make of an historical figure such as Jesus? 00:24:18.82\00:24:21.46 He's as real an historic figure as, 00:24:21.49\00:24:23.69 as Genghis Khan or Napoleon or William Shakespeare. 00:24:23.73\00:24:27.50 How did He live His life? 00:24:27.56\00:24:28.93 He lived His life selflessly, for the benefit of others. 00:24:28.96\00:24:34.17 What kind of example did He leave? 00:24:34.20\00:24:36.37 To love others. 00:24:36.40\00:24:38.91 He's just what the world needed then, 00:24:38.94\00:24:42.68 and He's exactly what the world needs today. 00:24:42.71\00:24:48.58 So where does He feature in your life?
