Disease took a tererrible toll. 00:02:59.61\00:03:03.24 They didn't have nenearly enough supplies. 00:03:03.28\00:03:05.58 Willlliam Bradford, the leader of the Plymouth Cony, wrote, 00:03:05.61\00:03:09.05 "The dangers we great, but not desperate; 00:03:09.08\00:03:12.35 the fficulties were many, but not invincible." 00:03:12.39\00:03:15.36 That was very optimistic viewpoint 00:03:15.39\00:03:17.63 and offered by one who hadsurvived the hardships. 00:03:17.66\00:03:21.33 You can understand why the Plymouth cololonists celebrated 00:03:21.36\00:03:24.30 after their firstt harvest in 1621. 00:03:24.33\00:03:27.27 God had graciously saved them and prorovided for them. 00:03:27.30\00:03:32.04 They looked to God as ththe Giver of all good gifts, 00:03:32.07\00:03:35.94 understanding what James wrote when he said, 00:03:35.94\00:03:38.95 "Every good gift and every perfect gift i is from above, 00:03:38.98\00:03:42.35 "and comesown from the Father of lights, 00:03:42.38\00:03:44.89 with whothere is no variation or shadow of turning." 00:03:44.92\00:03:48.36 That's's James 1:17. 00:03:48.39\00:03:51.16 It was more than 200 years 00:03:51.19\00:03:52.69 after what we might call that f first Thanksgiving 00:03:52.73\00:03:55.23 that Thanksgiving was officially r recognized. 00:03:55.26\00:03:58.57 It's now celebrated in the Uned States every year, 00:03:58.60\00:04:01.44 initially a time of devotion God, 00:04:01.47\00:04:05.01 but now really a f family event-- which certainly isn't 00:04:05.04\00:04:08.84 all bad. FaFamily, food, a day off work for most, 00:04:08.88\00:04:11.75 and that's Thanksgivin 00:04:11.78\00:04:13.25 The Canadian version also started as an pression 00:04:13.28\00:04:16.12 of thanksgsgiving to God. 00:04:16.15\00:04:18.15 So what are you thankful for?
