¤[music ends]¤¤ 00:00:15.94\00:00:17.95 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:19.85\00:00:21.88 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:21.92\00:00:24.82 Once a week a rabbi in New York City travels around Manhattan 00:00:24.85\00:00:30.53 spending a lot of time looking up. 00:00:30.56\00:00:33.66 He's looking to see if the eruv is still intact. 00:00:33.70\00:00:37.10 If it isn't, he calls a construction company, 00:00:37.13\00:00:40.17 and he gets in a cherry picker 00:00:40.20\00:00:41.97 and rises 18 feet above the streets of Manhattan to fix it. 00:00:42.00\00:00:46.21 An "eruv," E-R-U-V, is, at least in this case, 00:00:46.24\00:00:51.01 a clear fishing line strung up 00:00:51.05\00:00:53.28 around most of the island of Manhattan, 00:00:53.31\00:00:55.48 from the southern tip of the island 00:00:55.52\00:00:57.15 all the way to 145th Street in Harlem in the north 00:00:57.19\00:01:00.96 and taking in all of Central Park. 00:01:00.99\00:01:03.83 Now, why does the rabbi do this? 00:01:03.86\00:01:06.16 ¤[soft piano music]¤ 00:01:06.19\00:01:07.50 When God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, 00:01:07.50\00:01:10.93 He said and wrote this: 00:01:10.97\00:01:13.70 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 00:01:13.74\00:01:16.81 "Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 00:01:16.84\00:01:19.81 "but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. 00:01:19.84\00:01:23.91 "In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, 00:01:23.95\00:01:27.48 "nor your daughter, nor your male servant, 00:01:27.52\00:01:29.58 "nor your female servant, nor your cattle, 00:01:29.62\00:01:32.95 nor your stranger who is within your gates." 00:01:32.99\00:01:35.49 Exodus 20, verses 8 through 10. 00:01:35.52\00:01:37.86 And observant Jews, as you'd expect, take that seriously. 00:01:38.99\00:01:43.47 So in places like New York City, that presents some challenges. 00:01:43.50\00:01:47.80 For traditional Jews, on the Sabbath day, 00:01:47.84\00:01:51.01 nothing can be carried from one's home into a public space, 00:01:51.04\00:01:55.48 and that includes things such as house keys or a wallet. 00:01:55.51\00:01:59.95 It means no pushing a baby stroller, 00:02:00.05\00:02:02.55 which for some families would mean that there's no way 00:02:02.58\00:02:05.59 they could leave their home on the Sabbath. 00:02:05.62\00:02:08.69 "Eruvim" are found in more than 30 states in the United States 00:02:09.59\00:02:13.50 and in several countries around the world. 00:02:13.53\00:02:15.80 And they function as a workaround, really. 00:02:15.83\00:02:18.53 The rule is, if you're within the eruv, 00:02:18.57\00:02:22.10 you're in your own personal space. 00:02:22.14\00:02:24.94 So therefore you can carry whatever you want. 00:02:24.97\00:02:27.81 The eruv turns a big city area into one big communal backyard. 00:02:27.84\00:02:34.98 Which is interesting, perhaps, to a non-Jew, 00:02:36.38\00:02:39.32 'cause what you have is a rule created by rabbis and not by God 00:02:39.35\00:02:45.49 that severely limits what a person can do on the Sabbath. 00:02:45.53\00:02:49.73 Then another rule is devised to get around the restrictions 00:02:49.76\00:02:54.47 imposed by that first rule. 00:02:54.50\00:02:57.81 Keeping the Sabbath today is largely a Jewish concept. 00:02:57.84\00:03:02.08 But it wasn't always that way. 00:03:02.11\00:03:04.28 You find someone who's got a few miles on the clock 00:03:04.31\00:03:06.58 and ask them what it was like when they were younger, 00:03:06.61\00:03:08.95 and they'll tell you something like, 00:03:08.98\00:03:11.35 "Well, after church we'd go to Grandma's house, 00:03:11.39\00:03:13.76 "and she'd have a special meal prepared, and, 00:03:13.79\00:03:16.22 "and then the rest of the day no one would do any work, 00:03:16.26\00:03:18.86 not even Grandpa. Grandpa wouldn't even work on his farm," 00:03:18.89\00:03:22.00 because they considered the day to be special, 00:03:22.03\00:03:26.03 and they kept it holy-- 00:03:26.07\00:03:27.54 now, not like observant Jews, of course, but holy nonetheless. 00:03:27.57\00:03:32.77 As society has drifted away from the religious 00:03:32.81\00:03:35.68 and embraced the secular, 00:03:35.71\00:03:37.81 there's been a move away from some of the practices 00:03:37.85\00:03:40.52 that once characterized religious faith. 00:03:40.55\00:03:43.82 And not everybody thinks that that's a great idea. 00:03:43.85\00:03:46.92 When Simon & Schuster published the book "The Gift of Rest" 00:03:46.96\00:03:50.59 in 2011, a book written by then senator Joe Lieberman, 00:03:50.63\00:03:55.53 who was Jewish, the book received strong critical acclaim 00:03:55.56\00:03:59.47 from Christian quarters, 00:03:59.50\00:04:02.00 with many people beginning to wonder out loud 00:04:02.04\00:04:04.31 whether Christians weren't missing out on something 00:04:04.34\00:04:07.21 by passing lightly over the Sabbath. 00:04:07.24\00:04:10.81 God gave 10 commandments on Sinai, and we'd have no trouble 00:04:10.85\00:04:15.25 agreeing on the benefits, the blessings, 00:04:15.28\00:04:18.89 and the plain old common sense of keeping them. 00:04:18.92\00:04:22.09 "No other gods before [God]." 00:04:22.12\00:04:24.83 Well, of course. 00:04:24.86\00:04:26.19 If God wasn't God in your life and something else was, 00:04:26.23\00:04:29.80 then God wouldn't be first; 00:04:29.83\00:04:31.53 He'd be second or third or fourth--or worse. 00:04:31.57\00:04:35.80 And then you could never honor the words that Jesus spoke 00:04:35.84\00:04:38.87 when He quoted Deuteronomy 6:5 in Matthew 22:37, 00:04:38.91\00:04:44.78 "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, 00:04:44.81\00:04:47.15 with all your soul, and with all your mind." 00:04:47.18\00:04:50.39 Unless God is first, that just can't happen. 00:04:50.42\00:04:54.09 ¤[soft piano music]¤ 00:04:54.12\00:04:57.76 Second commandment: No graven images. 00:04:57.79\00:05:00.90 That's idolatry. 00:05:00.93\00:05:02.20 Praying to statues, bowing before images-- 00:05:02.23\00:05:05.50 we can't justify that in any way. 00:05:05.53\00:05:07.97 God has spoken clearly about that. 00:05:08.00\00:05:10.44 It lowers your concept of God and therefore lowers you. 00:05:10.47\00:05:15.14 And you see, the Ten Commandments are good ideas. 00:05:15.18\00:05:18.15 They represent the character of God. 00:05:18.18\00:05:21.78 The third commandment says we shouldn't "take the name 00:05:21.82\00:05:24.49 of the Lord...in vain"-- use it as a common swear word. 00:05:24.52\00:05:28.16 A lot of people do, and it's never right. 00:05:28.19\00:05:31.49 The fourth commandment is the longest: 00:05:31.53\00:05:33.53 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." 00:05:33.56\00:05:35.66 In fact, it's by far the longest of the Ten Commandments. 00:05:35.70\00:05:39.63 The fifth: "Honor your father and your mother." 00:05:39.67\00:05:43.00 I can't think of a single parent 00:05:43.04\00:05:45.54 who doesn't think that that's a really good idea. 00:05:45.57\00:05:49.14 And by the way, how would society look 00:05:49.18\00:05:52.05 if we actually did take that commandment seriously? 00:05:52.08\00:05:55.05 And what if parents who wished for their children to honor them 00:05:55.08\00:05:59.75 conducted themselves in such a way 00:05:59.79\00:06:01.46 that it would make it easy for children to render that honor? 00:06:01.49\00:06:05.56 Now, that would be something. 00:06:05.59\00:06:07.73 The sixth commandment: "Thou shalt not kill," 00:06:07.76\00:06:10.20 which actually means, "Thou shalt not murder." 00:06:10.23\00:06:13.64 Any arguments with that one? 00:06:13.67\00:06:15.50 No. We believe in that one, no question. 00:06:15.54\00:06:19.51 Now, there are two of the remaining commandments 00:06:19.54\00:06:22.11 that have fallen out of favor, 00:06:22.14\00:06:24.48 and commandment seven is one of them. 00:06:24.51\00:06:26.38 It says, "Thou shalt not commit adultery." 00:06:26.41\00:06:30.82 That's physical intimacy with someone you're not married to, 00:06:30.85\00:06:34.62 although Jesus said that this even includes 00:06:34.66\00:06:36.59 looking at another person to lust. 00:06:36.62\00:06:39.43 The reason I say this commandment has fallen 00:06:39.46\00:06:41.33 out of favor is that in society, and even in the church, 00:06:41.36\00:06:45.70 there's unfortunately plenty of adultery 00:06:45.73\00:06:48.60 and lust and pornography. 00:06:48.64\00:06:52.14 The eighth commandment is, "Thou shalt not steal." 00:06:52.17\00:06:56.24 Any problem with that one? 00:06:56.28\00:06:57.91 I'll wait while you lock your house and set your alarm 00:06:57.95\00:07:00.48 and lock your car before you answer. 00:07:00.52\00:07:02.98 We love that commandment. We wish everyone did. 00:07:03.02\00:07:06.69 Now, keep in mind, we're briefly reviewing the Ten Commandments, 00:07:06.72\00:07:09.86 and we're seeing that there are real benefits in keeping them. 00:07:09.89\00:07:13.23 They're good for us. They're good for society. 00:07:13.26\00:07:16.60 The ninth commandment: 00:07:16.63\00:07:17.93 "Thou shalt not bear false witness." 00:07:17.97\00:07:20.00 No lying--that's obvious. That's good. 00:07:20.04\00:07:23.37 And the final commandment 00:07:23.41\00:07:24.77 is the other one that's kind of neglected: 00:07:24.81\00:07:27.61 "Thou shalt not covet," 00:07:27.64\00:07:29.44 which gets to the root of all commandment-breaking. 00:07:29.48\00:07:32.45 Now, coveting is an inappropriate desire to have 00:07:32.48\00:07:36.69 that which isn't yours, that which you have no right to. 00:07:36.72\00:07:40.49 So, of course it's okay to want a better car 00:07:40.52\00:07:42.99 or to admire a nice house. 00:07:43.02\00:07:44.86 This commandment speaks to our inner desires. 00:07:44.89\00:07:48.13 Most moral codes only deal with outward acts. 00:07:48.16\00:07:51.80 This one touches on the thoughts, 00:07:51.83\00:07:53.50 the intents, the desires. 00:07:53.54\00:07:55.80 God cares about that. He sees the heart. 00:07:55.84\00:07:59.71 And seeing as we're not to covet, 00:07:59.74\00:08:01.94 this tells us then that we're not slaves to our desires. 00:08:01.98\00:08:05.51 You want your neighbor's spouse? 00:08:05.55\00:08:07.62 You don't have to. The Ten Commandments don't save us." 00:09:52.72\00:09:56.49 And they're absolutely right. 00:09:56.52\00:09:58.46 No one should be thinking about the Ten Commandments 00:09:58.49\00:10:00.96 as a means of salvation. 00:10:00.96\00:10:03.40 Salvation comes just one way, 00:10:03.43\00:10:05.67 and that's by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. 00:10:05.70\00:10:10.21 Jesus died for our sins, and it's through faith in Him, 00:10:10.24\00:10:14.24 through faith in the blood that He shed for us, 00:10:14.28\00:10:16.88 that we receive salvation from sin. 00:10:16.91\00:10:20.05 As Paul wrote to Titus, 00:10:20.08\00:10:21.88 "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, 00:10:21.92\00:10:25.15 "but according to His mercy He saved us, 00:10:25.19\00:10:27.52 "by the washing of regeneration, 00:10:27.56\00:10:29.59 "and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which He shed on us abundantly 00:10:29.62\00:10:33.70 through Jesus Christ our Saviour." 00:10:33.73\00:10:35.56 That's Titus 3, verses 5 and 6. 00:10:35.60\00:10:39.50 That's clear, and we're not deviating from that. 00:10:39.53\00:10:42.70 This is why faith in Jesus is so important. 00:10:42.74\00:10:45.77 The only place you can receive 00:10:45.81\00:10:47.78 the righteousness you need to be saved is from Jesus. 00:10:47.81\00:10:52.21 He lived a perfect life. 00:10:52.25\00:10:53.85 And so when you have faith in Jesus, 00:10:53.88\00:10:56.45 you receive credit for His perfect life. 00:10:56.48\00:10:59.42 We're saved through Jesus only. 00:10:59.45\00:11:02.69 In fact, if you look at the Hebrew, 00:11:02.72\00:11:04.33 the Ten Commandments aren't called the ten "commandments," 00:11:04.36\00:11:07.20 they're called the ten "words," 00:11:07.23\00:11:09.46 and they're written in the positive. 00:11:09.50\00:11:11.40 Exodus, chapter 20 begins with God saying, 00:11:11.43\00:11:13.57 "I am the Lord your God. 00:11:13.60\00:11:14.94 "[I called] you out of the land of Egypt, 00:11:14.97\00:11:16.60 out of the house of bondage." 00:11:16.64\00:11:17.81 And then He says, you'll "have no other gods before me." 00:11:17.84\00:11:20.78 You won't worship graven images. 00:11:20.81\00:11:22.51 God says, "Because I saved you, 00:11:22.54\00:11:25.55 "this becomes an inevitability in your life. 00:11:25.58\00:11:28.42 This is how you're going to live." 00:11:28.45\00:11:30.79 So, why are the Ten Commandments important? 00:11:30.82\00:11:32.85 Because when somebody comes to faith in Jesus, 00:11:32.89\00:11:35.66 Jesus lives His life in them. 00:11:35.69\00:11:39.29 John 15 and verse 4 says, 00:11:39.33\00:11:41.80 "Abide in me, and I in you. 00:11:41.83\00:11:44.43 "As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, 00:11:44.47\00:11:46.94 "except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, 00:11:46.97\00:11:50.11 except ye abide in me." 00:11:50.14\00:11:52.64 A lost person comes to Jesus and is saved by faith in Jesus. 00:11:52.67\00:11:56.98 And then, that lost person, now a saved person, 00:11:57.01\00:12:00.28 lives according to the will of God, 00:12:00.32\00:12:02.75 which is expressed in the Ten Commandments. 00:12:02.78\00:12:05.32 [birds twittering] 00:12:05.35\00:12:06.92 Now, I must tell you where I am. 00:12:06.96\00:12:09.39 I'm in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains 00:12:09.42\00:12:12.33 at Fields of the Wood, 00:12:12.36\00:12:14.56 a theme park operated by the Church of God of Prophecy. 00:12:14.60\00:12:17.67 Here you'll find, among other things, 00:12:17.70\00:12:19.80 a 300-feet-wide representation of the Ten Commandments. 00:12:19.83\00:12:24.77 Each letter is five feet high and four feet wide. 00:12:24.81\00:12:28.94 Some of the commandments are abbreviated, 00:12:28.98\00:12:30.65 because if they weren't, 00:12:30.68\00:12:32.35 you'd need a much bigger hillside than this. 00:12:32.38\00:12:35.15 So these are the Ten Commandments, 00:12:35.18\00:12:36.79 larger than life, placed here by Christian believers 00:12:36.82\00:12:40.32 who certainly thought they're important, 00:12:40.36\00:12:43.22 not as a means of salvation, 00:12:43.26\00:12:45.13 but as the life believers in Jesus live 00:12:45.16\00:12:47.66 when He gets hold of their hearts. 00:12:47.66\00:12:50.57 Isn't this something? 00:12:50.60\00:12:53.17 In his book, "The Gift of Rest," former senator Joe Lieberman 00:12:53.20\00:12:58.14 writes about Jews looking forward to and welcoming 00:12:58.17\00:13:02.31 what they call "Queen Sabbath." 00:13:02.34\00:13:04.91 I've witnessed that very thing and heard those same words 00:13:04.95\00:13:07.65 in Jerusalem at the Western Wall. 00:13:07.68\00:13:10.52 In fact, down there you'll see people celebrating 00:13:10.55\00:13:12.95 as the Sabbath arrives, 00:13:12.99\00:13:14.69 celebrating as though they've won the Super Bowl. 00:13:14.72\00:13:17.59 And they believe that's consistent with what you see 00:13:17.63\00:13:19.93 in Isaiah, chapter 58. 00:13:19.96\00:13:22.96 The prophet wrote, "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, 00:13:23.00\00:13:26.74 "from doing your pleasure on my holy day, 00:13:26.77\00:13:30.07 "and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord 00:13:30.11\00:13:33.94 "honorable, and shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, 00:13:33.98\00:13:38.25 "nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, 00:13:38.28\00:13:42.45 "then you shall delight yourself in the Lord; 00:13:42.48\00:13:44.99 "and I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, 00:13:45.02\00:13:48.72 "and feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. 00:13:48.76\00:13:52.23 The mouth of the Lord has spoken." 00:13:52.26\00:13:55.26 That's a serious blessing proclaimed by God. 00:13:55.30\00:13:58.30 Now, someone's going to say, 00:13:58.33\00:13:59.57 "Ah, but that's for Jews only, surely." 00:13:59.60\00:14:02.57 But wait. We both know that it wasn't long ago 00:14:02.60\00:14:05.61 when Christians used to take the Sabbath seriously. 00:14:05.64\00:14:09.34 Over the years there's been a de-emphasis on this, 00:14:09.38\00:14:11.98 so that today, for most Christians, 00:14:12.01\00:14:14.55 what God gave as a special day has been reduced 00:14:14.58\00:14:17.25 to an hour or two, at most, of going to church. 00:14:17.29\00:14:20.46 I wonder if we could be missing something. 00:14:20.49\00:14:22.56 Author Judith Shulevitz quotes a 17th-century Puritan minister 00:14:22.59\00:14:26.80 who says, "The word Sabbath properly signifies, 00:14:26.83\00:14:29.56 not common, but sacred or holy rest." 00:14:29.60\00:14:33.94 Jesus said that "the Sabbath was made for man"-- 00:14:33.97\00:14:36.30 "anthropos," human beings--"and not man for the Sabbath." 00:14:36.34\00:14:41.24 Now, the way many Jews relate to the Sabbath 00:14:41.28\00:14:44.25 might not exactly work for most Christians. 00:14:44.28\00:14:47.15 Setting up a wire around a city that miraculously transforms 00:14:47.18\00:14:51.99 that city into your actual backyard one day a week 00:14:52.02\00:14:55.52 seems a bit like you're taking something given by God 00:14:55.56\00:14:58.49 and wrapping it up in a lot of tradition. 00:14:58.53\00:15:01.30 Judith Shulevitz wrote, 00:15:01.33\00:15:03.13 "I should also add that the image we hold 00:15:03.16\00:15:05.73 "in our heads of the Jewish Sabbath isn't wholly based 00:15:05.77\00:15:09.77 "on the Fourth Commandment, either. 00:15:09.80\00:15:12.27 "The Sabbath of candle lighting and dinners and not driving 00:15:12.31\00:15:15.84 "and not turning lights on and off was shaped 00:15:15.88\00:15:18.51 more by rabbinic law than by the Torah." 00:15:18.55\00:15:22.65 I mentioned Jerusalem. 00:15:22.68\00:15:24.42 If you get on an elevator in a Jewish hotel on the Sabbath, 00:15:24.45\00:15:28.82 you learn that some elevators are preprogrammed 00:15:28.86\00:15:31.89 to stop automatically and open and shut automatically 00:15:31.93\00:15:36.16 on every floor so that a Jewish believer can ride the elevator 00:15:36.20\00:15:41.04 without having to push a button and therefore "work" 00:15:41.07\00:15:44.91 by creating a spark or a fire. 00:15:44.94\00:15:47.48 Jews in Jesus' day had taken this so far as to state 00:15:47.51\00:15:50.75 that Jesus shouldn't even heal a person on the Sabbath day 00:15:50.78\00:15:55.08 because to do so, to heal someone, would be to work. 00:15:55.12\00:16:00.29 The disciples were criticized for taking some grains of wheat 00:16:00.32\00:16:03.69 and rubbing them in their hands so they could eat them, 00:16:03.73\00:16:07.20 minus the wheat husk. 00:16:07.23\00:16:09.16 ¤[soft orchestral music]¤ 00:16:09.20\00:16:13.37 And they were missing the point, weren't they? 00:16:13.40\00:16:15.47 God gave the Sabbath in the beginning 00:16:15.50\00:16:17.41 as a memorial of Creation, 00:16:17.44\00:16:19.14 which is why He instituted it at the end of the Creation week. 00:16:19.17\00:16:22.98 He created for six days, 00:16:23.01\00:16:24.85 and then He rested on the seventh day. 00:16:24.88\00:16:27.28 He gave it to remind His people just who He was. 00:16:27.32\00:16:31.12 He wanted them to remember Creation, 00:16:31.15\00:16:32.95 which is under relentless attack today. 00:16:32.99\00:16:36.09 He wanted them to trust Him. 00:16:36.12\00:16:38.09 And He also wanted them to rest while entering into His rest. 00:16:38.13\00:16:42.13 But what God gave as a blessing was turned into a curse 00:16:42.16\00:16:46.17 by religious zealots who loaded it down with meaningless, 00:16:46.20\00:16:50.07 rather pointless manmade laws. 00:16:50.11\00:16:52.27 Remember, Jesus Himself and His followers 00:16:52.31\00:16:55.41 fell afoul of the religious leaders 00:16:55.44\00:16:57.38 simply because they plucked some grain on the Sabbath day. 00:16:57.41\00:17:01.48 They were accused of working, which patently they were not. 00:17:01.52\00:17:06.45 But could it be that we're missing something 00:17:06.49\00:17:08.66 by rushing through the day of rest? 00:17:08.69\00:17:11.59 Might we be missing out by forgetting to remember? 00:17:11.63\00:17:16.20 We'll look at that in just a moment. 00:17:16.23\00:17:18.50 ¤[music swells and ends]¤¤ 00:17:18.53\00:17:25.54 >>John: I'd like to encourage you to get today's free offer. 00:17:27.84\00:17:30.95 It's my DVD presentation of "Rest and Recovery," 00:17:30.98\00:17:34.55 taken from our Hope Awakens series. 00:17:34.58\00:17:37.65 An ancient gift, a closer relationship with Jesus, 00:17:37.69\00:17:41.76 and more of the presence of God in your life. 00:17:41.79\00:17:44.89 To get "Rest and Recovery," 00:17:44.93\00:17:46.73 call now: 800-253-3000. 00:17:46.76\00:17:50.07 That's 800-253-3000. 00:17:50.10\00:17:53.20 Or visit us online at iiwoffer.com. 00:17:53.23\00:17:57.51 >>John: Disease, terrorism, pandemics, suicide. 00:17:58.67\00:18:03.81 Around the world 65 million people die each year. 00:18:03.85\00:18:07.32 That's 120 human lives ending every minute. 00:18:07.35\00:18:11.05 Death is a problem, a problem humanity can't solve. 00:18:11.09\00:18:15.19 Many have tried, and while people are living longer 00:18:15.22\00:18:18.23 these days, everyone still dies. 00:18:18.26\00:18:21.80 But even though we cannot solve the problem of death, 00:18:21.83\00:18:24.47 there is a solution.
