>>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:19.78\00:00:21.88 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:21.92\00:00:25.22 Success doesn't always come easy, 00:00:25.25\00:00:28.56 and frequently success follows repeated failure. 00:00:28.59\00:00:33.60 After working on a whaling ship, 00:00:33.63\00:00:35.26 Rowland started a business with his brother in California. 00:00:35.30\00:00:39.23 The business failed. 00:00:39.27\00:00:41.20 So he headed east and opened a store. 00:00:41.24\00:00:44.31 Then another, then another, then another. 00:00:44.34\00:00:48.81 They all failed. 00:00:48.84\00:00:50.45 So then he went all in, moving to New York City 00:00:50.48\00:00:54.55 and opening yet another store. 00:00:54.58\00:00:57.15 This time the business didn't fail. 00:00:57.19\00:01:00.12 In fact, it became a big success. 00:01:00.16\00:01:02.96 After his death, that store was moved to 34th and Broadway, 00:01:02.99\00:01:06.63 where Macy's became one of the largest department stores 00:01:06.66\00:01:11.27 in the world. 00:01:11.30\00:01:12.67 Henry Ford's success in the auto industry is the stuff of legend. 00:01:12.70\00:01:16.67 But that success wasn't instant. 00:01:16.71\00:01:19.84 His first venture folded without producing a single car. 00:01:19.87\00:01:23.04 His second attempt was just as unsuccessful as the first. 00:01:23.08\00:01:26.55 He quit his next company, but Ford eventually revolutionized 00:01:26.58\00:01:31.19 not only the vehicle manufacturing industry 00:01:31.22\00:01:34.09 but industry himself. 00:01:34.12\00:01:36.26 He said, "Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, 00:01:36.29\00:01:40.56 this time more intelligently." 00:01:40.60\00:01:43.67 How many people fail at faith before making a success 00:01:43.70\00:01:47.40 of their spiritual life? 00:01:47.44\00:01:48.90 Well, the answer is probably everyone. 00:01:48.94\00:01:51.74 Today we're continuing our series 00:01:51.77\00:01:53.48 "Great Characters of the Bible," 00:01:53.51\00:01:56.04 and we're looking at someone 00:01:56.08\00:01:57.01 who took a long time to get it right. 00:01:57.05\00:02:00.28 His experience has to be an encouragement to anyone 00:02:00.32\00:02:03.52 who knows the feeling of blowing it as a follower of Jesus, 00:02:03.55\00:02:07.22 of falling short, of wondering if you'll ever get the hang 00:02:07.26\00:02:10.43 of being a disciple of Christ. 00:02:10.46\00:02:13.23 So how bad was it for this man? 00:02:13.26\00:02:14.86 Well, he was violent. 00:02:14.93\00:02:17.40 He was racist. 00:02:17.43\00:02:18.90 He made promises he didn't keep, 00:02:18.93\00:02:21.27 and was even referred to as "Satan" 00:02:21.30\00:02:24.04 by none other than Jesus Himself. 00:02:24.07\00:02:27.24 When we're introduced to Peter in the Bible, 00:02:27.28\00:02:29.21 he's a fisherman. 00:02:29.24\00:02:30.68 His name is Simon Bar-Jonah, Simon the son of Jonah. 00:02:30.71\00:02:35.42 And Jesus gave him the surname Peter, 00:02:35.45\00:02:39.12 which is why he's sometimes referred to as Simon Peter. 00:02:39.15\00:02:42.72 When we read of his call to follow Jesus in Matthew 4, 00:02:42.76\00:02:45.59 we get the impression that he'd been acquainted with Jesus 00:02:45.63\00:02:48.50 for some time. 00:02:48.53\00:02:50.07 Jesus called to Peter and Andrew his brother 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.37 and said, "'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.' 00:02:52.40\00:02:56.10 And they straightway left their nets, and followed Him." 00:02:56.14\00:03:00.41 Now, it's significant that Jesus called Peter, of all people. 00:03:00.44\00:03:05.75 Peter wasn't a religious leader. 00:03:05.78\00:03:08.45 He hadn't graduated from the best religious schools 00:03:08.48\00:03:11.29 in the land. 00:03:11.32\00:03:12.69 But it's not that Peter hadn't been educated; 00:03:12.72\00:03:15.59 he hadn't been miseducated. 00:03:15.62\00:03:18.39 The schools in that day were riddled with pride and bigotry. 00:03:18.43\00:03:22.00 Jesus was looking for someone genuine, teachable, humble, 00:03:22.03\00:03:27.17 someone with moral worth who had a desire to see God honored. 00:03:27.20\00:03:31.04 If you have that, 00:03:31.87\00:03:33.58 God can use you, no matter what you do in life. 00:03:33.61\00:03:36.81 And there's another reason it's significant 00:03:37.65\00:03:39.15 that Jesus called Peter, and that's because Peter was... 00:03:39.18\00:03:43.92 Peter was Peter. He was far from perfect. 00:03:43.95\00:03:47.86 He was rough around the edges, 00:03:47.89\00:03:49.96 and it was going to take a lot of sanding 00:03:49.99\00:03:51.96 before Jesus could smooth those rough edges out. 00:03:51.99\00:03:55.66 He once said to Jesus, "See, we have left all and followed You. 00:03:55.70\00:03:59.83 Therefore what shall we have?" 00:03:59.87\00:04:01.64 In other words, what's in it for us? 00:04:01.67\00:04:04.94 Peter would ask questions that other people wouldn't ask, 00:04:04.97\00:04:07.84 and he'd say the things that others wouldn't say. 00:04:07.88\00:04:10.35 When Jesus was going to wash the disciples' feet, 00:04:10.38\00:04:12.61 Peter said, "You shall never wash my feet!" 00:04:12.65\00:04:15.35 Before telling Jesus to wash not only his feet, 00:04:15.38\00:04:18.09 but his hands and his head also. 00:04:18.12\00:04:20.22 When he saw Jesus on the shore of the lake one time, 00:04:20.26\00:04:22.52 he was so excited he dived in and swam for shore. 00:04:22.56\00:04:27.00 That was Peter: 00:04:27.03\00:04:28.13 impetuous, in a hurry, an action man, 00:04:28.16\00:04:31.63 speak first, think second. 00:04:31.67\00:04:33.97 "I will lay down my life for [You]," he told Jesus. 00:04:34.00\00:04:36.94 And of course we know how that turned out. 00:04:37.91\00:04:40.18 Peter had some growing to do. 00:04:40.21\00:04:43.65 And that's who Jesus calls to be His disciples: 00:04:43.68\00:04:46.72 people who have some growing to do. 00:04:46.75\00:04:49.75 Because the fact is that's everyone. 00:04:49.78\00:04:52.99 No one is the finished product. 00:04:53.02\00:04:55.56 If you feel God is calling you, and He is, 00:04:55.59\00:04:58.49 don't wait until you're ready to accept that call. 00:04:58.53\00:05:02.33 Don't wait to be good enough for God. 00:05:02.36\00:05:05.37 Peter accepted Jesus' call, and he grew. 00:05:05.40\00:05:09.34 Peter was transparent. He was honest, 00:05:09.37\00:05:12.37 honest about his feelings, honest about his love for God, 00:05:12.41\00:05:16.41 and honest about himself. 00:05:16.44\00:05:18.41 So let's take a look at several episodes from the life of Peter. 00:05:18.45\00:05:22.82 We'll see what we can learn, not only about Peter, 00:05:22.85\00:05:25.95 but about ourselves and how we can have 00:05:25.99\00:05:28.22 a successful relationship with God in spite of our failings. 00:05:28.26\00:05:33.63 One of the most memorable Peter moments occurred on a lake 00:05:33.66\00:05:38.47 late one night. 00:05:38.50\00:05:40.07 Jesus had fed the thousands with just five loaves and two fish. 00:05:40.10\00:05:43.30 And then He sent the disciples on ahead by boat 00:05:43.34\00:05:46.37 to the other side of the lake. 00:05:46.41\00:05:48.21 A storm came up. 00:05:48.24\00:05:49.71 The Bible says, "The boat was... tossed by the waves, 00:05:49.74\00:05:52.21 for the wind was contrary." 00:05:52.25\00:05:54.58 And based on what John writes, it seems like the disciples 00:05:54.62\00:05:57.42 were about 3/4 of the way across the sea when Jesus appeared 00:05:57.45\00:06:02.26 walking on the water. 00:06:02.29\00:06:06.13 The disciples were initially afraid, 00:06:06.16\00:06:07.76 not certain of what they were seeing. 00:06:07.83\00:06:09.26 But Jesus said, 00:06:09.30\00:06:10.90 "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid." 00:06:10.93\00:06:14.67 Peter was beside himself. 00:06:14.70\00:06:17.04 He called to Jesus and said, "'Lord, if it is You, command me 00:06:17.07\00:06:21.61 "to come to You on the water.' So He said, 'Come.' 00:06:21.64\00:06:24.75 "And when Peter had come down out of the boat, 00:06:24.78\00:06:27.48 he walked on the water to go to Jesus." 00:06:27.52\00:06:30.89 Walk on water? 00:06:30.92\00:06:33.15 Since when? 00:06:33.19\00:06:34.82 But this is what God can do. 00:06:34.86\00:06:36.73 Loudmouth Peter, shoot-first, aim-second Peter, 00:06:36.76\00:06:41.13 and Jesus gave Peter a unique experience. 00:06:41.16\00:06:44.57 No other disciple ever did what Peter did that night. 00:06:44.60\00:06:49.37 But Peter was about to learn something, 00:06:49.40\00:06:51.71 something he would forget when he really needed to remember it. 00:06:51.74\00:06:56.18 He began to sink. 00:06:56.21\00:06:57.35 Evidently he took his eyes off Jesus 00:06:57.38\00:06:59.45 and looked instead at the stormy sea. 00:06:59.48\00:07:01.52 When you look at the storms of life, that's what happens. 00:07:01.55\00:07:04.62 When you focus on the problems more than on the solution, 00:07:04.65\00:07:07.56 when you forget that God is able, 00:07:07.59\00:07:09.69 that's what happens. 00:07:09.72\00:07:10.79 Peter sank into a stormy sea in the dead of night, 00:07:10.83\00:07:14.46 with no lifejacket. 00:07:14.46\00:07:16.40 But he had the presence of mind to do the right thing, 00:07:16.43\00:07:18.63 and he called out to Jesus. 00:07:18.67\00:07:20.17 There was no time for eloquence or oratory. 00:07:20.20\00:07:22.84 There was no time for flowery language. 00:07:22.87\00:07:24.84 He cried out from the heart just a three-word prayer: 00:07:24.87\00:07:28.11 "Lord, save me!" 00:07:28.14\00:07:30.88 And what did Jesus do? 00:11:51.17\00:11:52.74 he learned; he grew. 00:11:52.77\00:11:55.38 God was patient with him, which means God will be patient 00:11:55.41\00:11:58.81 with you as you grow in your faith. 00:11:58.85\00:12:02.08 In fact, again in the same chapter, when Peter said 00:12:02.12\00:12:04.95 to Jesus that Jesus was the Son of the living God, 00:12:04.99\00:12:08.29 Jesus said this to Peter: 00:12:08.32\00:12:10.63 "And I also say to you that you are Peter, 00:12:10.66\00:12:13.66 "and on this rock I will build my church, 00:12:13.70\00:12:16.77 and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." 00:12:16.80\00:12:20.30 Now, some want to believe that Jesus was calling Peter 00:12:20.97\00:12:24.07 "this rock," or that Peter was the first pope, 00:12:24.11\00:12:27.51 the first bishop of Rome. 00:12:27.54\00:12:29.24 Well, He wasn't. 00:12:29.28\00:12:31.48 There were no popes in the first century A.D. 00:12:31.51\00:12:34.78 He wasn't a pope, he wasn't a Catholic, 00:12:34.82\00:12:38.15 and he wasn't "the rock." 00:12:38.19\00:12:40.19 Now, you could see how somebody might want to read it that way, 00:12:40.22\00:12:43.32 but the evidence of the Bible just doesn't support that. 00:12:43.36\00:12:46.56 Look at it linguistically. 00:12:46.59\00:12:48.03 Remember, Jesus gave Peter the name Peter. 00:12:48.06\00:12:52.10 It's from the Greek "pétros," which means "a stone," 00:12:52.13\00:12:55.94 a small slab of stone maybe. 00:12:55.97\00:12:58.71 Jesus said, "You are [Pétros]," a stone, 00:12:58.74\00:13:02.14 "and upon this rock"--this "pétra," a big rock, a boulder-- 00:13:02.18\00:13:08.58 "I will build my church, and the gates of hell"-- 00:13:08.62\00:13:11.75 the Greek word there is "Hades," the grave-- 00:13:11.79\00:13:13.62 "the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." 00:13:13.66\00:13:17.46 Peter himself was certainly prevailed against. 00:13:17.49\00:13:20.73 Linguistically, Peter isn't "the rock." 00:13:20.76\00:13:22.80 Experientially, Peter isn't "the rock." 00:13:22.83\00:13:25.50 You don't want your church built on Peter. 00:13:25.53\00:13:29.04 But the Bible refers to Jesus as "the rock" again and again. 00:13:29.07\00:13:33.38 Second Samuel chapter 22: 00:13:33.41\00:13:34.88 "The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; 00:13:34.91\00:13:38.25 and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation." 00:13:38.28\00:13:41.22 Psalm 89: 00:13:41.25\00:13:42.35 "He shall cry unto me, 'Thou art my Father, 00:13:42.38\00:13:44.69 my God, and the rock of my salvation.'" 00:13:44.72\00:13:48.62 This is divinity being referred to. 00:13:48.66\00:13:51.86 Now, Peter made an immense contribution 00:13:51.89\00:13:54.00 to not only the early Christian church, 00:13:54.00\00:13:55.90 but to the growth and development of Christianity. 00:13:55.93\00:13:58.77 And he still does. 00:13:58.80\00:14:00.57 But he wasn't "the rock," and he wasn't a pope. 00:14:00.60\00:14:04.81 He was a faulty man used by God to do great things. 00:14:04.84\00:14:10.38 And as far as we can tell, only four people wrote 00:14:10.41\00:14:13.38 more books of the Bible than Peter did. 00:14:13.42\00:14:17.29 But unfortunately, for a man who wrote two books of the Bible, 00:14:17.32\00:14:20.66 he's probably best remembered for his worst moment. 00:14:20.69\00:14:25.33 It was the night before Jesus died. 00:14:25.36\00:14:27.40 They're in the upper room, 00:14:27.40\00:14:29.06 and Jesus had just instituted the Lord's Supper. 00:14:29.10\00:14:31.83 "Then Jesus said to them, 'All of you will be made to stumble 00:14:31.87\00:14:35.27 "'because of me this night, for it is written: 00:14:35.30\00:14:38.21 "'"I will strike the Shepherd, 00:14:38.24\00:14:39.64 and the sheep of the flock will be scattered."'" 00:14:39.67\00:14:42.61 Jesus quoted the prophet Zechariah. 00:14:42.64\00:14:45.61 Then He said, "'But after I have been raised, 00:14:45.65\00:14:48.98 "I will go before you to Galilee.' 00:14:49.02\00:14:51.89 "Peter answered and said to Him, 'Even if all are made to stumble 00:14:51.92\00:14:55.92 "because of You, I will never be made to stumble.' 00:14:55.96\00:15:00.46 "Jesus said to him, 'Assuredly, I say to you that this night, 00:15:00.50\00:15:05.57 "before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.' 00:15:05.60\00:15:09.90 "Peter said to Him, 'Even if I have to die with You, 00:15:09.94\00:15:12.74 I will not deny You!' Jesus hadn't forgotten Peter. 00:19:35.27\00:19:38.97 He hadn't cast him off. 00:19:39.01\00:19:40.74 In John 21, when Peter miraculously catches 00:19:40.78\00:19:43.48 those 153 big fish, and they're eating with Jesus on the shore, 00:19:43.51\00:19:49.12 Jesus says to him, "'Simon, son of Jonah, 00:19:49.15\00:19:53.49 "do you love me more than these?' 00:19:53.52\00:19:56.26 "He said to Him, 'Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.' 00:19:56.29\00:20:00.86 He said to him, 'Feed my lambs.'" 00:20:00.90\00:20:03.40 No self-assurance now. 00:20:03.43\00:20:05.60 Jesus asked him a second time, same reply. 00:20:05.63\00:20:08.70 "He said to him the third time, 00:20:08.74\00:20:10.31 "'Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?' 00:20:10.34\00:20:14.04 "Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, 00:20:14.08\00:20:16.58 "'Do you love me?' And he said to Him, 00:20:16.61\00:20:19.58 "'Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.' 00:20:19.61\00:20:23.32 Jesus said to him, 'Feed my sheep.'" 00:20:23.35\00:20:27.99 What's interesting is if you look at the Greek words used-- 00:20:28.02\00:20:31.66 Jesus asks him, "Do you love me?"-- 00:20:31.69\00:20:35.10 but He used the Greek word "agapé" when He asked him 00:20:35.13\00:20:38.63 those first two times. 00:20:38.67\00:20:40.00 "Agapé," that's a self-sacrificing love. 00:20:40.04\00:20:43.64 It's the highest form of love. 00:20:43.67\00:20:45.94 It's not "phileó," brotherly love; 00:20:45.97\00:20:47.91 it's unconditional love. 00:20:47.94\00:20:50.75 "Peter, do you love me with that?" 00:20:50.78\00:20:54.05 That's the kind of love that motivates someone 00:20:54.08\00:20:56.58 to stand for Jesus even if he has to die. 00:20:56.62\00:21:01.26 Peter answers, "You know I [phileó] You." 00:21:01.29\00:21:04.96 I love You with brotherly love. 00:21:04.99\00:21:07.30 Jesus asked him a second time, "Do you love me, Peter?" 00:21:07.30\00:21:09.90 Do you [agapé] me, love me unconditionally? 00:21:09.93\00:21:14.30 Again, Peter says, "You know I [phileó] You," brotherly love. 00:21:14.34\00:21:19.04 Now, that third time He said, "Peter, do you [phileó] me?" 00:21:19.07\00:21:23.35 Do you love me with brotherly love? 00:21:23.38\00:21:25.61 Peter said, "Lord, You know all things," which is interesting. 00:21:25.65\00:21:30.99 You know I love You with a brotherly love. 00:21:31.02\00:21:33.89 You also know that the last time I made a big profession, 00:21:33.92\00:21:38.69 I fell flat on my face. 00:21:38.73\00:21:40.43 You know how weak I am. 00:21:40.46\00:21:43.77 And Jesus said to him, twice actually, 00:21:43.80\00:21:46.80 "Feed my sheep." 00:21:46.84\00:21:48.90 Peter denied Jesus three times. 00:21:48.94\00:21:51.64 Jesus puts it to him three times. 00:21:51.67\00:21:55.08 And three times Peter came through. 00:21:55.11\00:21:59.01 Now, think about that. 00:21:59.05\00:22:00.45 Peter had failed dismally, and yet Jesus commissioned him 00:22:00.48\00:22:05.42 to be a leader in the church. 00:22:05.45\00:22:07.72 He restored Peter. 00:22:07.76\00:22:10.09 He showed love for Peter. 00:22:10.13\00:22:15.13 And what Jesus did for Peter, He can do for you...or anyone else. 00:22:15.16\00:22:21.80 So what happened to Peter? 00:22:22.80\00:22:24.37 At Pentecost he was filled with the Holy Spirit 00:22:24.41\00:22:28.11 and preached powerfully. 00:22:28.14\00:22:30.25 Three thousand people were baptized in that one day 00:22:30.28\00:22:34.02 when the floodgates opened, and the church exploded with growth. 00:22:34.05\00:22:39.35 He and John were met by a paralyzed man in Acts chapter 3, 00:22:39.39\00:22:42.99 a beggar hoping for coins. 00:22:43.02\00:22:45.39 "Peter said, 'Silver and gold have I none; 00:22:45.43\00:22:48.56 "'but such as I have give I thee: 00:22:48.60\00:22:51.13 In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.'" 00:22:51.17\00:22:56.27 The man went "walking, [and] leaping, and praising God." 00:22:56.30\00:23:01.08 Peter was a miracle-worker now. 00:23:01.11\00:23:04.31 He delivered some of the most bold, 00:23:04.35\00:23:06.75 some of the most stirring lines in the book of Acts. 00:23:06.78\00:23:09.98 "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you 00:23:10.02\00:23:12.55 "more than to God, you judge. I'm the failure. 00:26:59.68\00:27:02.38 "I'm more likely to take the sword and swing it 00:27:02.42\00:27:04.85 "or make a rash promise that I can't keep 00:27:04.89\00:27:07.66 than I am to simply be humble and faithful." 00:27:07.69\00:27:10.39 Friend, if you've failed, God can restore you, wants to. 00:27:10.43\00:27:13.90 If you've blown it, 00:27:13.93\00:27:15.53 God can put the broken pieces back together again. 00:27:15.56\00:27:18.73 In fact, God can do better than that. 00:27:18.77\00:27:20.40 He can completely remake you. 00:27:20.44\00:27:22.07 Would you like that? 00:27:22.10\00:27:23.17 If you would, lift up your heart to God right now. 00:27:23.20\00:27:25.24 You might even want to lift up your hand right now, if you can. 00:27:25.27\00:27:28.74 Our Father and our God, thank You for treating us 00:27:28.78\00:27:32.01 the way You treated Peter 00:27:32.05\00:27:34.55 and for giving us hope that You can make a person new. 00:27:34.58\00:27:38.95 We thank You for that newness. 00:27:38.99\00:27:40.36 We claim it now through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. 00:27:40.39\00:27:45.66 And it's in Jesus' name that we pray. 00:27:45.69\00:27:48.73 Amen. 00:27:48.76\00:27:50.23 Thank you so much for joining me. 00:27:50.27\00:27:52.37 Look forward to seeing you again next time. 00:27:52.40\00:27:54.44 Until then, remember: 00:27:54.47\00:27:56.47 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:27:56.50\00:28:00.61 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 00:28:00.64\00:28:04.61 ¤[dramatic theme music]¤ 00:28:04.65\00:28:11.65
