>>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:19.11\00:00:20.78 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:20.82\00:00:23.59 Creationist Ken Ham is the founder and CEO 00:00:23.62\00:00:27.06 of Ark Encounter, which opened in Williamstown, Kentucky, 00:00:27.09\00:00:30.83 in July of 2016. 00:00:30.86\00:00:32.39 We've spoken to Ken Ham here on It Is Written. 00:00:32.43\00:00:35.20 His debate in 2014 with Bill Nye the Science Guy 00:00:35.23\00:00:38.60 on creation and evolution has been watched now 00:00:38.63\00:00:40.64 by millions of people. 00:00:40.67\00:00:42.87 Mr. Ham built an amazing replica of Noah's ark. 00:00:42.90\00:00:47.68 It took his team just two years 00:00:47.71\00:00:49.71 to build what took Noah a whole lot longer. 00:00:49.74\00:00:52.88 You know, power tools will do that. 00:00:52.91\00:00:54.95 He built it according to the measurements found in the Bible. 00:00:54.98\00:00:57.65 It's 85 feet wide, 51 feet high, and 510 feet long, 00:00:57.69\00:01:03.49 1 1/2 times as long as a football field. 00:01:03.53\00:01:07.00 The ark attracts almost a million visitors a year. 00:01:07.03\00:01:11.50 Today, as we continue our series, 00:01:11.53\00:01:13.17 "Great Characters of the Bible," 00:01:13.20\00:01:15.24 we're going to study the life of Noah. 00:01:15.27\00:01:17.67 Who was Noah? 00:01:17.71\00:01:19.11 And what lessons can we learn from the man 00:01:19.14\00:01:21.31 that was chosen by God to save the population of this world 00:01:21.34\00:01:25.18 from total annihilation? 00:01:25.21\00:01:27.05 It's a thrilling study. 00:01:27.08\00:01:28.95 It not only gives answers to some of the problems 00:01:28.98\00:01:30.95 we face today, but causes us to hope in a merciful God 00:01:30.99\00:01:35.16 who can and will save His children 00:01:35.19\00:01:38.19 during these troublesome times. 00:01:38.23\00:01:40.30 To begin, let's open our Bibles to the "begots" in Genesis. 00:01:40.33\00:01:44.20 Genesis 5:21, we'll find out more about Noah's background: 00:01:44.23\00:01:48.14 "Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah." 00:01:48.17\00:01:51.91 Verse 23: "So all the days of Enoch 00:01:51.94\00:01:54.44 "were three hundred... sixty-five years. 00:01:54.48\00:01:56.88 "And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. 00:01:56.91\00:02:01.18 "Methuselah lived one hundred... eighty-seven years, 00:02:01.22\00:02:04.35 "and begot Lamech.... So all the days of Methuselah 00:02:04.39\00:02:07.02 "were nine hundred...sixty-nine years; and he died. 00:02:07.06\00:02:10.23 "Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son. 00:02:10.26\00:02:14.56 "And he called his name Noah, saying, 00:02:14.56\00:02:17.73 "'This one shall comfort us 00:02:17.77\00:02:19.43 "'concerning our work and the toil of our hands, 00:02:19.47\00:02:22.90 because of the ground which the Lord [hath] cursed.'" 00:02:22.94\00:02:25.67 That's the lineage of Noah. 00:02:25.71\00:02:27.81 He lived and worked with his grandfather Methuselah. 00:02:27.84\00:02:30.81 Methuselah lived longer than anyone who has ever lived-- 00:02:30.85\00:02:34.42 and died--on this earth. 00:02:34.45\00:02:36.48 Methuselah's father was the legendary Enoch, 00:02:36.52\00:02:39.52 who walked with God. 00:02:39.55\00:02:40.99 God just took Enoch without Enoch seeing death. 00:02:41.02\00:02:45.16 There's no doubt Noah grew up hearing the stories of Creation 00:02:45.19\00:02:48.46 and the fall of humanity, and the promises of God. 00:02:48.50\00:02:52.00 Yet he lived during an extremely wicked time. 00:02:52.03\00:02:56.54 The first sin mentioned after describing the lineage of Noah 00:02:56.57\00:03:01.31 was that the followers of God began to intermarry 00:03:01.34\00:03:05.45 with the nonbelievers, and they practiced polygamy. 00:03:05.48\00:03:08.42 Let's read it, starting in Genesis 6, verse 1: 00:03:08.45\00:03:11.32 "Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply 00:03:11.35\00:03:14.22 "on the face on the earth, and daughters were born to them, 00:03:14.26\00:03:17.76 that the sons of God"--or, or the followers of God-- 00:03:17.79\00:03:21.03 "saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; 00:03:21.06\00:03:24.47 "and they took wives for themselves 00:03:24.50\00:03:26.84 of all whom they chose." 00:03:26.87\00:03:29.20 Now, it's been said that the "sons of God" in this verse 00:03:29.24\00:03:31.97 are angels who procreated with humans and created giants. 00:03:32.01\00:03:37.21 Now, the next verse does talk about giants being in the land, 00:03:37.25\00:03:39.75 but that interpretation just doesn't hold up. 00:03:39.78\00:03:42.48 It doesn't agree with Jesus' statement in Matthew 22:30 00:03:42.52\00:03:45.79 that the angels don't marry, nor are they given in marriage. 00:03:45.82\00:03:50.56 Now, immediately after talking about the intermarriage 00:03:50.59\00:03:53.33 between the followers of God and the wives they took 00:03:53.36\00:03:57.00 from among the heathen, 00:03:57.03\00:03:58.57 God said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever." 00:03:58.60\00:04:04.07 That's Genesis 6:3. 00:04:04.11\00:04:06.14 In the New Testament, Jesus said, Matthew 24:37, 00:04:06.17\00:04:09.54 "But as the days of Noah were, 00:04:09.58\00:04:11.91 "so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 00:04:11.95\00:04:14.82 "For as in the days before the flood, 00:04:14.85\00:04:16.82 "they were eating and drinking, 00:04:16.85\00:04:18.82 "marrying and giving in marriage, 00:04:18.85\00:04:21.02 "until the day that Noah entered the ark, 00:04:21.06\00:04:24.33 "and did not know until the flood came and took them 00:04:24.36\00:04:26.59 all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be." 00:04:26.63\00:04:31.20 It's not that there's any problem at all 00:04:31.23\00:04:32.60 with eating and drinking, or getting married. 00:04:32.63\00:04:35.27 It's the complacency of life going on as usual, 00:04:35.30\00:04:38.91 with no thought of preparing for Jesus to come. 00:04:38.94\00:04:42.21 The, the, the "same old, same old," 00:04:42.24\00:04:44.65 it's the apathy and indifference toward the message of the Bible. 00:04:44.68\00:04:48.15 The biggest event of the ages is about to happen, 00:04:48.18\00:04:52.29 and just like in the days of Noah, 00:04:52.32\00:04:54.72 people are too occupied, or maybe preoccupied, to notice. 00:04:54.76\00:04:59.09 Part of the blame belongs to the excess of our lifestyle. 00:04:59.13\00:05:03.23 Our plates are too full, even to the detriment of our health. 00:05:03.26\00:05:07.10 Our closets are crammed; 00:05:07.14\00:05:09.54 our houses are getting bigger and more extravagant. 00:05:09.57\00:05:13.14 The world is under the delusion that happiness is achieved 00:05:13.17\00:05:15.81 by what you own or what you can buy. 00:05:15.84\00:05:18.61 We waste our time trying to fill a bottomless bucket, 00:05:18.65\00:05:23.42 just like in the days of Noah. 00:05:23.45\00:05:25.52 The planet has produced a selfie generation 00:05:25.55\00:05:28.16 with a me-first attitude. 00:05:28.19\00:05:29.76 It only leads to unhappy relationships, 00:05:29.79\00:05:32.23 where one out of every two marriages ends in divorce. 00:05:32.26\00:05:35.96 Statistics show that 80 percent of divorcées remarry 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.73 within four years, only to repeat the process. 00:05:38.77\00:05:42.64 That's a lot of heartache and a lot of disappointment. 00:05:42.67\00:05:46.71 When we compare what was going on in Noah's day 00:05:46.74\00:05:48.94 with what's going on now, we can see that we're repeating 00:05:48.98\00:05:52.31 the same sins of the antediluvian world, 00:05:52.35\00:05:55.12 same mistakes. 00:05:55.15\00:05:56.92 Paul described the situation perfectly when he wrote 00:05:56.95\00:05:59.55 in Romans 1:21, "Because that, when they knew God, 00:05:59.59\00:06:03.83 "they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; 00:06:03.86\00:06:08.20 "but became vain in their imaginations, 00:06:08.23\00:06:10.53 "and their foolish heart was darkened. 00:06:10.57\00:06:12.83 Professing to be wise, they became fools." 00:06:12.87\00:06:16.94 Noah stood firm against the sin of his age. 00:06:16.97\00:06:20.61 Genesis 6:9 says, 00:06:20.64\00:06:22.28 "Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. 00:06:22.31\00:06:25.61 Noah walked with God." 00:06:25.65\00:06:27.82 That's what God wanted all along: 00:06:27.85\00:06:30.12 children who would walk with Him, 00:06:30.15\00:06:32.92 children who would love and serve Him. 00:06:32.95\00:06:34.89 But instead, verse 6 laments, 00:06:34.92\00:06:37.93 "And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth 00:06:37.96\00:06:41.13 and He was grieved in His heart." 00:06:41.16\00:06:43.26 In a moment, we'll see how the actions of Noah saved the world 00:06:43.30\00:06:47.04 from total annihilation. 00:06:47.07\00:06:48.67 I'll be right back. 00:06:48.70\00:06:49.90 ¤[music swells and ends]¤ 00:06:49.94\00:06:55.24 >>John: Jesus said He came into the world to give us 00:06:59.25\00:07:01.75 a more abundant life. 00:07:01.78\00:07:03.52 And you can have that by making simple changes 00:07:03.55\00:07:05.65 that bring profound results. 00:07:05.69\00:07:07.59 And with that in mind, I'd like to offer you a Written 00:07:29.78\00:07:31.78 as we continue our series, "Great Characters of the Bible." 00:07:31.81\00:07:35.42 We're talking about the life of Noah. 00:07:35.45\00:07:38.29 According to the Associated Press, 00:07:38.32\00:07:40.62 authorities were warned at least 10 times 00:07:40.66\00:07:44.46 that a massive stockpile of explosive chemicals 00:07:44.49\00:07:47.40 stored near the port in Beirut, Lebanon, 00:07:47.46\00:07:50.30 was potentially dangerous. 00:07:50.33\00:07:52.43 But no corrective action was taken. 00:07:52.47\00:07:55.54 And on August the 4th, 2020, 00:07:55.57\00:07:57.87 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate blew up, 00:07:57.91\00:08:03.85 causing a massive amount of damage to that beautiful city. 00:08:03.88\00:08:08.52 Approximately 200 were killed and 6,500 injured. 00:08:08.55\00:08:14.26 Now, think of the lives that could have been saved 00:08:14.29\00:08:16.09 and the misery that could have been prevented 00:08:16.12\00:08:18.33 if only someone had heeded the warning. 00:08:18.36\00:08:23.06 Warnings are helpful, if you listen to them and take action. 00:08:23.10\00:08:27.84 In Genesis 6, verse 5, the Bible says that in Noah's day, 00:08:27.87\00:08:31.41 "The Lord saw that the wickedness of man 00:08:31.44\00:08:34.24 "was great in the earth, 00:08:34.28\00:08:36.01 "and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart 00:08:36.04\00:08:39.95 was only evil continually." 00:08:39.98\00:08:42.28 Verse 11 notes that "the earth was filled with violence." 00:08:42.32\00:08:47.06 Violence, it's everywhere-- 00:08:47.09\00:08:50.09 senseless murders, physical abuse, 00:08:50.13\00:08:53.76 war, crime everywhere you turn, 00:08:53.80\00:08:56.80 children playing violent video games. 00:08:56.83\00:08:59.57 Doesn't take a multimillion- dollar study to demonstrate 00:08:59.60\00:09:03.24 that we are conditioning our children to be violent. 00:09:03.27\00:09:07.48 And parents cave into pressure to give these games 00:09:07.51\00:09:09.64 to their children because--well, why? 00:09:09.68\00:09:12.01 Because everybody's doing it. 00:09:12.05\00:09:14.05 But what we see as normal God sees as an abomination. 00:09:14.08\00:09:19.05 Things were so bad in Noah's day that God said, 00:09:19.09\00:09:21.79 "'I will destroy man whom I have created 00:09:21.82\00:09:24.66 "'from the face of the earth, both man and beast, 00:09:24.69\00:09:27.93 "'creeping thing and birds of the air, 00:09:27.96\00:09:30.10 "for I am sorry that I have made them.' 00:09:30.13\00:09:32.30 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." 00:09:32.33\00:09:36.67 Of all the people in the world, 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.07 Noah was the only one who truly had a heart for God. 00:09:38.11\00:09:43.08 No doubt there were people that professed God's name, 00:09:43.11\00:09:46.25 but they didn't live out their faith. 00:09:46.28\00:09:49.35 God is merciful and God is love, but the world was so bad 00:09:49.38\00:09:55.09 that its only chance for survival 00:09:55.12\00:09:56.76 was for God to hit the reset button. 00:09:56.79\00:09:59.76 Most of the people in the world would be destroyed, 00:09:59.79\00:10:02.20 virtually all, but all who wanted to be saved 00:10:02.23\00:10:06.57 could be saved. 00:10:06.60\00:10:08.57 It's written in Amos 3, verse 7, 00:10:08.60\00:10:10.91 "Surely the Lord God does nothing, 00:10:10.94\00:10:13.44 unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets." 00:10:13.48\00:10:17.41 A hundred and twenty years before the Flood, 00:10:17.45\00:10:19.95 the Lord, by a holy angel, 00:10:19.98\00:10:21.45 declared to Noah what was going to happen 00:10:21.48\00:10:23.62 and directed him to build an ark. 00:10:23.65\00:10:26.99 Paul wrote in Hebrews 11, verse 7, 00:10:27.02\00:10:29.72 "By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, 00:10:29.76\00:10:35.56 "moved with godly fear, 00:10:35.60\00:10:37.43 "prepared an ark for the saving of his household, 00:10:37.47\00:10:40.84 "by which he condemned the world and became heir 00:10:40.87\00:10:44.17 of the righteousness which is according to faith." 00:10:44.21\00:10:47.38 So God warned Noah, and Noah, in turn, warned the people. 00:10:47.41\00:10:52.78 God knew that Noah would act on his faith. 00:10:52.81\00:10:56.05 Now, this is what I want you to remember about Noah: 00:10:56.08\00:10:58.49 He gave the world an example of believing just what God says. 00:10:58.52\00:11:03.79 All of his time was invested in building the ark. 00:11:03.83\00:11:07.76 There was a lot to be done. 00:11:07.83\00:11:10.03 The ark was made out of gopher wood. 00:11:10.07\00:11:13.64 It's the only time you read about gopher wood in the Bible 00:11:13.67\00:11:16.40 in connection with the ark. 00:11:16.44\00:11:17.91 Just cutting and preparing the wood was, in itself, 00:11:17.94\00:11:21.04 a massive undertaking. 00:11:21.08\00:11:23.18 The ark had to be covered on the outside and the inside 00:11:23.21\00:11:26.08 with pitch, so as to make it leakproof. 00:11:26.11\00:11:29.18 There'd be a window in the top to provide light. 00:11:29.22\00:11:31.92 No electricity back then. 00:11:31.95\00:11:33.69 Stalls were needed to keep the animals safe 00:11:33.72\00:11:35.82 while the ark was being tossed about on the water. 00:11:35.86\00:11:38.49 And food was needed to feed them all. 00:11:38.53\00:11:40.70 As the ark began to take shape on dry ground, 00:11:40.73\00:11:43.47 people flocked from every direction to not only see 00:11:43.50\00:11:46.37 the strange sight but to hear the words of Noah. 00:11:46.40\00:11:50.37 They'd never seen rain before. 00:11:50.41\00:11:52.71 According to Genesis 2, verse 6, 00:11:52.74\00:11:54.81 "A mist went up from the earth 00:11:54.84\00:11:56.71 and watered the whole face of the ground." 00:11:56.75\00:11:59.31 And here was a man telling them a flood was coming. 00:11:59.35\00:12:03.89 For centuries the laws of nature had been fixed. 00:12:03.92\00:12:07.16 The rivers had never passed their boundaries. 00:12:07.19\00:12:09.22 There had never been a hurricane, 00:12:09.26\00:12:11.43 never been a tornado. 00:12:11.46\00:12:12.99 You can imagine people saying, "And you're telling us, 00:12:13.03\00:12:15.73 "Mr. Noah, that water is just going to fall out of heaven, 00:12:15.76\00:12:19.63 cover the whole world?" 00:12:19.67\00:12:21.67 They must have thought that Noah was out of his mind. 00:12:21.70\00:12:25.74 But some recognized in his words the voice of God. 00:12:25.77\00:12:29.91 For a time, some believed. 00:12:29.94\00:12:31.98 But as the years passed by, 00:12:32.01\00:12:33.25 they didn't see any evidence that Noah was right. 00:12:33.28\00:12:36.08 Now, we accept what God says not because of evidence; 00:12:36.12\00:12:39.52 we believe by faith. 00:12:39.55\00:12:41.36 We can't prove that God covered the ground with manna. 00:12:41.39\00:12:44.33 We can't prove that God brought water out of a rock. 00:12:44.36\00:12:48.36 But God has given us enough evidence in the Bible 00:12:48.40\00:12:51.93 that we can believe whatever He says. 00:12:51.97\00:12:54.87 For example, the Bible records the history 00:12:54.90\00:12:57.17 of certain world kingdoms long before they existed. 00:12:57.21\00:13:01.01 That ought to give you confidence 00:13:01.04\00:13:03.61 in the veracity of the Bible. 00:13:03.65\00:13:05.71 Remember Hebrews 11, verse 7: 00:13:05.75\00:13:07.88 "By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, 00:13:07.92\00:13:12.99 moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house." 00:13:13.02\00:13:17.76 "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, 00:13:17.79\00:13:20.36 the evidence of things not seen," 00:13:20.40\00:13:22.06 according to verse 1 of that same chapter. 00:13:22.10\00:13:24.33 Faith is what set Noah apart from the rest of the world. 00:13:24.37\00:13:29.00 Faith is what saved Noah and his household. 00:13:29.04\00:13:32.67 For 120 years Noah warned the antediluvian world 00:13:32.71\00:13:36.81 of the impending judgment about to break forth. 00:13:36.85\00:13:39.91 The day came when he made his last solemn appeal. 00:13:39.95\00:13:42.78 Again the people laughed at him. 00:13:42.82\00:13:45.72 Then suddenly a stillness settled upon the jeering crowd 00:13:45.75\00:13:50.03 as animals of all kinds and descriptions 00:13:50.06\00:13:52.33 made their way to the ark. 00:13:52.36\00:13:54.56 Fierce tigers, lumbering elephants, 00:13:54.56\00:13:57.53 hopping kangaroos made their way to the open doors. 00:13:57.57\00:14:01.60 Birds came flocking from every direction. 00:14:01.64\00:14:04.61 The animals went two by two into the ark, 00:14:04.64\00:14:07.11 although the Bible says the clean animals went in by sevens. 00:14:07.14\00:14:12.68 Now, some say there's no way all the different species 00:14:12.71\00:14:15.28 could have fit in there. 00:14:15.32\00:14:16.42 But notice what the Bible says in Genesis 7:13 and 14: 00:14:16.45\00:14:20.26 "On the very same day Noah and Noah's sons, 00:14:20.29\00:14:22.52 "Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah's wife and the three wives 00:14:22.56\00:14:27.03 "of his sons with them, entered the ark-- 00:14:27.03\00:14:29.56 "they and every beast after its kind, 00:14:29.60\00:14:32.87 "all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps 00:14:32.90\00:14:37.07 "on the earth after its kind, 00:14:37.11\00:14:39.31 and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort." 00:14:39.34\00:14:42.88 Now, notice the wording: "after its kind." 00:14:42.91\00:14:46.21 That doesn't mean that there were German shepherds, 00:14:46.25\00:14:48.05 poodles, dachshunds, and every single breed of dog 00:14:48.08\00:14:52.25 going into the ark. 00:14:52.29\00:14:53.59 It means two dogs went into the ark. 00:14:53.62\00:14:56.59 There could have been more, 00:14:56.62\00:14:57.99 but it doesn't mean that every breed went in. 00:14:58.03\00:15:00.96 Same with cats, same with cattle. 00:15:01.00\00:15:03.87 The wording doesn't necessarily mean 00:15:03.90\00:15:06.33 every one of today's species. 00:15:06.37\00:15:08.34 You, you see what I mean. 00:15:08.37\00:15:10.34 After Noah and his family and the animals were safe inside, 00:15:10.37\00:15:13.64 God shut the door. 00:15:13.68\00:15:16.21 For seven days nothing happened. 00:15:16.24\00:15:19.11 You'd imagine the people outside continued on as spectators, 00:15:19.15\00:15:21.85 and you can imagine them laughing and, and joking 00:15:21.88\00:15:24.42 about the crazy old man inside with a zoo. 00:15:24.45\00:15:27.42 By now, Noah was 600 years old. 00:15:27.46\00:15:32.73 But can you imagine how the expressions on their faces 00:15:32.76\00:15:35.60 changed from mirth to fear 00:15:35.63\00:15:39.17 when dark clouds hid the sun on the eighth day. 00:15:39.20\00:15:43.94 They weren't laughing anymore when thunder rumbled 00:15:43.97\00:15:46.71 and lightning cracked and flashed across the sky. 00:15:46.74\00:15:49.98 [thunder rumbles] 00:15:50.01\00:15:51.15 Then rain began to fall, 00:15:51.18\00:15:53.18 slowly at first, you'd think, and then faster and faster. 00:15:53.21\00:15:58.02 It says that "the fountains of the great deep were broken up, 00:15:58.05\00:16:01.96 and the windows of heaven were opened." 00:16:01.99\00:16:05.06 Torrents of water hit the earth with immense force. 00:16:05.09\00:16:08.80 I don't suppose anyone laughed 00:16:08.83\00:16:10.43 as animals began running to higher ground, 00:16:10.47\00:16:12.90 crying out in terror as they went. 00:16:12.93\00:16:16.50 No, instead of laughing, the people would have run to the ark 00:16:16.54\00:16:19.64 and banged on the door. 00:16:19.67\00:16:21.88 But it was too late. Probation had ended for them. 00:16:21.91\00:16:26.48 I can't imagine the terror, 00:16:26.51\00:16:28.52 the horror the people would have felt 00:16:28.55\00:16:31.12 knowing they could have been safely inside the ark. 00:16:31.15\00:16:37.13 So what happened after the door was shut? 00:16:37.16\00:16:40.13 I'll share that with you when we come back. 00:16:40.16\00:16:42.10 ¤[music swells and ends]¤ 00:16:42.13\00:16:47.90 >>John: Jesus said He came into the world to give us 00:16:51.41\00:16:53.88 a more abundant life. 00:16:53.91\00:16:55.54 And you can have that by making simple changes 00:16:55.58\00:16:57.71 that bring profound results. 00:16:57.75\00:16:59.65 And with that in mind, I'd like to offer you a special book. 00:16:59.68\00:17:02.12 It's called "Confidence in Chaos." 00:17:02.15\00:17:04.39 If you want to get your heart right with God, 00:17:04.42\00:17:06.02 this is the book that's going to set you on the path 00:17:06.05\00:17:07.86 to that place. 00:17:07.89\00:17:08.89 In order to get this book, call right now. 00:17:08.92\00:17:10.59 The number is 1-800-253-3000, 00:17:10.63\00:17:14.56 and simply ask for "Confidence in Chaos," 00:17:14.56\00:17:17.33 or visit us online at iiwoffer.com. 00:17:17.37\00:17:20.44 >>John: Unless you or someone close to you has experienced it, 00:17:21.44\00:17:24.54 the pain of miscarriage can be difficult to comprehend. 00:17:24.57\00:17:28.08 How do you navigate the disappointment, 00:17:28.11\00:17:30.01 the emotional pain of losing something, 00:17:30.05\00:17:32.18 someone, that represents your biggest hopes and dreams? 00:17:32.21\00:17:36.45 Don't miss "Innocents Lost," a biblical look 00:17:36.48\00:17:39.05 at the challenging subject of miscarriage, 00:17:39.09\00:17:41.22 a subject that touches more lives than most people imagine. 00:17:41.26\00:17:44.29 You'll meet someone who's experienced 00:17:44.33\00:17:45.96 the difficulty of miscarriage. 00:17:45.99\00:17:47.60 >>Becky Nordquist: Clinging to the truth of God's Word, 00:17:47.66\00:17:50.07 even when your heart doesn't feel it, 00:17:50.10\00:17:52.83 was absolutely the most important thing 00:17:52.87\00:17:55.24 we could have found. 00:17:55.27\00:17:56.10 >>John: And we'll hear from an expert 00:17:56.14\00:17:57.61 whose insight has helped many families. 00:17:57.64\00:17:59.91 >>Dr. Donald Taylor: Everything that's developing initially 00:17:59.94\00:18:03.24 has to be just right because it's such a critical foundation 00:18:03.28\00:18:07.32 for the development of that baby. 00:18:07.35\00:18:08.92 >>John: And we'll hear from the Word of God 00:18:08.95\00:18:11.29 as the Bible provides light and hope 00:18:11.32\00:18:13.49 in the midst of a bitter challenge. 00:18:13.52\00:18:15.26 "Innocents Lost," 00:18:15.29\00:18:16.29 brought to you 00:18:16.32\00:18:17.29 by It Is Written TV. 00:18:17.33\00:18:19.83 >>John Bradshaw: Welcome back to It Is Written. 00:18:21.36\00:18:23.47 We are continuing our series, "Great Characters of the Bible." 00:18:23.50\00:18:27.70 Today we're looking at the life of Noah. 00:18:27.74\00:18:30.51 We can only imagine what it must have been like 00:18:30.54\00:18:32.51 on the outside of the ark as people beheld the destruction 00:18:32.54\00:18:36.14 of their houses and their idols. 00:18:36.18\00:18:38.78 Imagine what it must have felt like inside the ark 00:18:38.81\00:18:41.58 for Noah and his family. 00:18:41.62\00:18:43.22 They could hear the people banging on the door, 00:18:43.25\00:18:45.35 screaming and yelling, begging to be let in. 00:18:45.39\00:18:48.36 They could hear the elements breaking up as trees 00:18:48.39\00:18:51.09 and, and massive rocks were hurled in the air. 00:18:51.13\00:18:54.93 Did Noah want to open the door and let them in? 00:18:54.93\00:18:57.60 Well, you'd think so. But he couldn't. 00:18:57.63\00:19:00.60 God had shut the door, and not even Noah could open it. 00:19:00.64\00:19:05.54 I'm sure the animals inside the ark were scared, too. 00:19:05.57\00:19:09.28 All they or anyone could do was sit tight and hang on 00:19:09.31\00:19:12.38 for the ride of their life. 00:19:12.41\00:19:14.48 For five long months, or 150 days, 00:19:14.52\00:19:17.22 they endured being tossed about by wind and sea. 00:19:17.25\00:19:20.79 They endured smelly animals and being cooped up in the ark. 00:19:20.82\00:19:24.26 Most people get a little stir crazy after a few days 00:19:24.29\00:19:27.30 shut up at home. 00:19:27.36\00:19:28.83 Imagine five months with nowhere to go. 00:19:28.86\00:19:31.63 Oh, now they were traveling, all right, 00:19:31.67\00:19:33.57 but they couldn't see the scenery. 00:19:33.60\00:19:35.87 But at last the waters began to subside, and the ark drifted 00:19:35.90\00:19:40.18 into a spot protected by a group of mountains. 00:19:40.21\00:19:44.11 Noah waited 40 days and sent out a raven. 00:19:44.15\00:19:47.48 The raven flew about but couldn't find a place to land. 00:19:47.52\00:19:51.69 So Noah waited another seven days and sent out a dove. 00:19:51.72\00:19:56.19 Same thing. The dove returned. 00:19:56.22\00:19:58.89 Another seven days passed before Noah sent out another dove, 00:19:58.93\00:20:03.60 which flew back that evening with an olive leaf in her mouth. 00:20:03.63\00:20:08.14 Hope sprang in their hearts. 00:20:08.17\00:20:10.64 Seven days later another dove was released, 00:20:10.67\00:20:13.17 which didn't come back. 00:20:13.21\00:20:15.14 They removed the covering of the ark and smelled fresh air. 00:20:15.18\00:20:18.75 It must have been heavenly. 00:20:18.78\00:20:20.58 I'm sure they were all very curious 00:20:20.62\00:20:22.48 about what the world would have looked like, 00:20:22.52\00:20:24.05 but Noah waited patiently for God to give the directions. 00:20:24.09\00:20:27.69 Eventually God spoke to Noah, saying, 00:20:27.72\00:20:29.72 "Go out of the ark, you and your wife, 00:20:29.76\00:20:33.70 and your sons and your sons' wives with you." 00:20:33.73\00:20:37.07 According to the Bible, the first thing Noah did 00:20:37.10\00:20:40.30 was build an altar and offer sacrifices 00:20:40.34\00:20:43.74 from among the clean animals as a thank offering. 00:20:43.77\00:20:47.38 He wanted to praise God for His kindness and mercy towards him. 00:20:47.41\00:20:52.78 "And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma. 00:20:52.81\00:20:55.95 "Then the Lord said in His heart, 'I will never again 00:20:55.98\00:20:59.15 "'curse the ground for man's sake, 00:20:59.19\00:21:02.06 "'although the imagination of man's heart is evil 00:21:02.09\00:21:05.29 "'from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing 00:21:05.33\00:21:09.30 "'as I have done. 00:21:09.33\00:21:10.53 "'While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, 00:21:10.57\00:21:14.47 "'cold and heat, winter and summer, 00:21:14.50\00:21:17.21 and day and night shall not cease.'" 00:21:17.24\00:21:21.14 And that's the story of Noah and the ark. 00:21:21.18\00:21:24.28 "God blessed Noah and his [family]" and told them 00:21:24.31\00:21:27.25 to "be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth." 00:21:27.28\00:21:32.65 Then God did a very beautiful thing. 00:21:32.69\00:21:37.16 He made a rainbow and set it in the clouds, 00:21:37.19\00:21:41.13 because He knew that there would always be a question 00:21:41.16\00:21:43.13 in the minds of future generations 00:21:43.16\00:21:45.17 about a worldwide flood. 00:21:45.20\00:21:48.04 If God did it once, wouldn't He do it again? 00:21:48.07\00:21:52.14 But God did not want people to be afraid of rain or storms, 00:21:52.17\00:21:55.81 so He made this promise: 00:21:55.84\00:21:57.31 "I set my rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for [a] sign 00:21:57.35\00:22:00.88 "of the covenant between me and the earth.... 00:22:00.92\00:22:03.22 "When I bring a cloud over the earth, 00:22:03.25\00:22:05.32 "that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 00:22:05.35\00:22:07.76 "and I will remember my covenant which is between me and you 00:22:07.79\00:22:11.66 "and every living creature of all flesh; 00:22:11.69\00:22:14.20 "the waters shall never again become a flood 00:22:14.23\00:22:17.03 to destroy all flesh." 00:22:17.07\00:22:19.57 Not that God would forget, but His purpose was 00:22:19.60\00:22:23.04 that when future generations would see the ark, 00:22:23.07\00:22:26.27 it would spark their curiosity, 00:22:26.31\00:22:28.74 and their parents would have the opportunity to repeat the story 00:22:28.78\00:22:31.21 of the global flood and God's promise. 00:22:31.25\00:22:35.18 But what became of Noah? 00:22:35.22\00:22:37.12 Well, Noah became a farmer, and he lived for 350 years 00:22:37.15\00:22:40.62 after the Flood, making him 950 years old when he died. 00:22:40.66\00:22:46.93 His son Ham committed an unnatural crime against Noah, 00:22:46.96\00:22:50.60 and he was cursed by God. 00:22:50.63\00:22:53.23 Ham's descendants became the Canaanites, 00:22:53.27\00:22:55.27 the enemies of the Israelites. 00:22:55.30\00:22:57.87 The line of Shem was to be that of the chosen people, 00:22:57.91\00:23:00.71 through which Abraham, David, and Jesus would descend. 00:23:00.74\00:23:05.81 Concerning Japheth, the Word says, 00:23:05.85\00:23:08.05 "God shall enlarge Japheth." 00:23:08.08\00:23:11.19 Noah's life is an example of how you and I 00:23:11.22\00:23:13.92 should act upon our faith. 00:23:13.96\00:23:16.59 I would encourage you to not think of Noah and the ark 00:23:16.62\00:23:19.56 as simply a story. 00:23:19.59\00:23:21.46 This is an account, something that really happened. 00:23:21.50\00:23:26.07 It's not a fairytale. 00:23:26.10\00:23:28.17 History's repeating itself, 00:23:28.20\00:23:30.07 and once again the cup of iniquity is filling up, 00:23:30.11\00:23:32.24 because man's thoughts and imaginations 00:23:32.27\00:23:34.58 are "only evil continually." 00:23:34.61\00:23:37.25 The people in Noah's day didn't have the written Word, 00:23:37.28\00:23:40.55 the Bible, as we do now. 00:23:40.58\00:23:42.88 But God has spelled out what happened in the past 00:23:42.92\00:23:46.15 and what will happen in the future. 00:23:46.19\00:23:48.06 You and I are without excuse. 00:23:48.09\00:23:51.39 God will eventually destroy the wicked from off the earth again, 00:23:51.43\00:23:55.93 but the righteous will be preserved 00:23:55.96\00:23:58.90 as Noah was preserved in the ark. 00:23:58.93\00:24:00.80 God will be their refuge, 00:24:00.84\00:24:03.20 "and under His wings" they shall trust. 00:24:03.24\00:24:06.21 Says the psalmist in Psalm 27, verse 5, 00:24:06.24\00:24:09.01 "In the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion: 00:24:09.04\00:24:12.35 in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me." 00:24:12.38\00:24:15.35 ¤[soft music]¤ 00:24:15.38\00:24:16.32 God has an ark of safety for His people. 00:24:16.35\00:24:20.16 If you listen to God's voice and follow Him in faith, 00:24:20.19\00:24:23.26 as Noah did, you won't be on the outside of the ark, 00:24:23.29\00:24:27.86 but you'll be on the inside. 00:24:27.86\00:24:30.33 What an example Noah gave us. 00:24:30.37\00:24:32.47 He heard the voice of God and believed it 00:24:32.50\00:24:35.54 and followed what God said. 00:24:35.57\00:24:37.84 And that's something you can do. 00:24:37.87\00:24:39.34 God wants you to do that. 00:24:39.37\00:24:41.51 You know God's will?
