>>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:20.05\00:00:21.45 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:21.48\00:00:23.92 The prophet Jeremiah was called by God 00:00:23.95\00:00:26.65 to give an unpopular message to Judah, which he did. 00:00:26.69\00:00:30.73 Now, as a result, he was accused of treason, 00:00:30.76\00:00:33.83 and there were calls that Jeremiah be executed. 00:00:33.86\00:00:37.37 Jeremiah was imprisoned, placed in the bottom of a cistern 00:00:37.40\00:00:41.40 from which the water had been drained. 00:00:41.44\00:00:43.67 He was lowered down into the mud and the muck 00:00:43.71\00:00:46.37 that had accumulated in the bottom of that cistern. 00:00:46.41\00:00:49.48 Jeremiah 38, verse 6 says, "Jeremiah sank in the mud." 00:00:49.51\00:00:55.12 He was left there to die. 00:00:55.15\00:00:57.25 But a man named Ebed-Melech, an Ethiopian, 00:00:57.29\00:01:00.19 approached the king, Zedekiah, and interceded for Jeremiah, 00:01:00.22\00:01:04.26 which was bold. 00:01:04.29\00:01:06.09 It could easily have cost Ebed-Melech his life. 00:01:06.13\00:01:09.00 He said to the king, essentially, 00:01:09.03\00:01:10.67 "What has been done to Jeremiah is not right, 00:01:10.70\00:01:13.00 and he will die in that cistern." 00:01:13.03\00:01:15.27 So the king gave order to get Jeremiah out of that filth. 00:01:15.30\00:01:18.81 "Take...thirty men," Zedekiah said, 00:01:18.84\00:01:21.48 and get Jeremiah out of there "before he dies." 00:01:21.51\00:01:25.11 And they did. 00:01:25.15\00:01:26.48 Jeremiah was doing the will of God, 00:01:27.68\00:01:29.92 and he met with bitter opposition. 00:01:29.95\00:01:32.25 He would have died in a dungeon 00:01:32.29\00:01:34.56 unless somebody stepped forward to help. 00:01:34.59\00:01:38.36 Ebed-Melech realized injustice was taking place, 00:01:38.39\00:01:42.66 and that injustice wouldn't allow him to remain inactive. 00:01:42.70\00:01:46.97 He realized something had to be done. 00:01:47.00\00:01:50.64 This is Selma, Alabama. 00:01:50.67\00:01:53.04 ¤[soft dramatic music]¤ 00:01:53.07\00:01:58.45 In the 1960s, people came here from around the United States 00:01:58.48\00:02:02.42 because, in the face of bitter injustice, 00:02:02.45\00:02:06.25 something had to be done. 00:02:06.29\00:02:08.82 What happened in Selma reminds us of what happened 00:02:10.19\00:02:12.89 2,000 years ago when Someone came to this earth to help. 00:02:12.93\00:02:17.70 ¤[harmonica music]¤ 00:02:17.73\00:02:18.90 It was a very different America in the 1960s, 00:02:18.93\00:02:22.60 and those differences were seen vividly in the South. 00:02:22.64\00:02:26.21 In 1965, there were 12,000 African-Americans living here 00:02:26.24\00:02:31.01 in Lowndes County. 00:02:31.05\00:02:33.31 And in spite of a constitutional guarantee that American citizens 00:02:33.35\00:02:37.32 had the right to vote, precious few of those 12,000 00:02:37.35\00:02:41.92 African-Americans were registered to do so. 00:02:41.96\00:02:45.89 >>Joanne Bland: We only had about 250 out of a possible 00:02:47.86\00:02:51.63 15,000 African-Americans on the roll, 00:02:51.67\00:02:54.74 and it wasn't just that the African-Americans didn't go 00:02:54.77\00:02:58.11 and try to register. 00:02:58.14\00:02:59.71 They had to jump through hoops. 00:02:59.74\00:03:01.58 You had a test before the literacy test-- 00:03:01.61\00:03:04.68 um, such as "How many jelly beans in a jar?" 00:03:04.71\00:03:08.92 You know, "How many gallons of water in the Alabama River?" 00:03:08.95\00:03:12.79 And--uh, yeah. 00:03:12.82\00:03:14.72 Um, and there was no way you could pass these things. 00:03:14.76\00:03:18.89 ¤[sad music]¤ 00:03:18.93\00:03:19.89 Even if you got that far, 00:03:19.93\00:03:21.73 someone who was white had to come and say, 00:03:21.76\00:03:24.27 "That's a good Negro.
