>>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:19.78\00:00:21.32 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:21.35\00:00:23.79 You know, I've met a lot of people in my life, 00:00:23.82\00:00:25.95 but I can't remember ever meeting one single person 00:00:25.99\00:00:28.82 who has ever said, 00:00:28.86\00:00:30.63 "I wish I hadn't lived as long as I have lived." 00:00:30.66\00:00:34.23 Most people would like to live longer. 00:00:34.30\00:00:37.13 But the fact of the matter is it's not until we get 00:00:37.17\00:00:39.10 very late in life, or maybe at the end of life, 00:00:39.13\00:00:41.94 that people say, "I wish I'd done things better. 00:00:41.97\00:00:45.27 I wish I had another year, five years, or ten years." 00:00:45.31\00:00:48.71 Now, most of us could have more years than we are going to get. 00:00:48.74\00:00:55.32 I want to say that to you again. 00:00:55.35\00:00:56.99 Most of us could live longer than we're going to live. 00:00:57.02\00:01:01.52 To talk about that with me today, 00:01:01.56\00:01:02.89 my special guest, president of CompassHealth Consulting, 00:01:02.92\00:01:05.79 Dr. David DeRose. 00:01:05.83\00:01:06.83 David, thanks for joining me. 00:01:06.86\00:01:07.96 >>Dr. David DeRose: Great to be with you, John. 00:01:08.00\00:01:09.26 >>John: I am thrilled genuinely. 00:01:09.30\00:01:10.37 You've written a book called "The Methuselah Factor," 00:01:10.40\00:01:13.50 and we know who Methuselah is. 00:01:13.54\00:01:15.44 He's that fellow who, in the Bible, 00:01:15.47\00:01:17.11 lived to be almost 1,000 years of age. 00:01:17.14\00:01:21.28 So when talking about "The Methuselah Factor," 00:01:21.31\00:01:23.68 clearly we're going to tell you how you can live to be 969. 00:01:23.71\00:01:28.65 Right? 00:01:28.68\00:01:29.82 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, John, the news is actually better 00:01:29.85\00:01:31.72 than that. 00:01:31.75\00:01:32.65 >>John: How can it be better than that? 00:01:32.69\00:01:34.19 >>Dr. DeRose: Here's what I'm going to tell you. 00:01:34.22\00:01:35.69 It, it's really this. 00:01:35.72\00:01:36.93 People are focused mainly on the number of years they live, 00:01:36.96\00:01:40.33 but we're talking about quality of life. 00:01:40.36\00:01:42.40 So the subtitle of the book is 00:01:42.43\00:01:43.80 "How to Live Sharper, Leaner, Longer, and Better." 00:01:43.83\00:01:47.44 Now, with our present bodies in the state of sin 00:01:47.47\00:01:50.94 in which we find ourselves, 00:01:50.97\00:01:52.57 969 years probably would not be optimal. 00:01:52.61\00:01:56.31 But we can help people live longer and better 00:01:56.34\00:01:58.71 by paying attention to the medical science 00:01:58.75\00:02:01.42 called hemorheology; it's the science of blood fluidity. 00:02:01.45\00:02:05.12 >>John: Okay, so, what we really want to do today is talk, 00:02:05.15\00:02:08.39 talk about the book, but more than the book itself, 00:02:08.42\00:02:12.13 the truth is, from a Christian perspective, 00:02:12.16\00:02:15.03 we want to live forever. 00:02:15.06\00:02:17.37 So today we're really going to talk about living forever, 00:02:17.40\00:02:19.80 but also living better, uh, more quality lives 00:02:19.83\00:02:23.24 during the time that we have on this earth. 00:02:23.27\00:02:25.91 Hemorheology you said is the science of what? 00:02:25.94\00:02:28.61 >>Dr. DeRose: The science of blood fluidity. 00:02:28.64\00:02:30.31 >>John: Uh, what's blood fluidity? 00:02:30.35\00:02:31.98 >>Dr. DeRose: Basically, think about it this way. 00:02:32.01\00:02:33.82 If order for you to have optimal health, 00:02:33.85\00:02:36.12 your blood has to flow freely through your blood vessels, 00:02:36.15\00:02:39.55 not just the large arteries and veins 00:02:39.59\00:02:41.69 but also through the tiny blood vessels, like the capillaries. 00:02:41.72\00:02:45.26 That's where exchange takes place, 00:02:45.29\00:02:47.66 where the oxygen goes into your tissues, 00:02:47.66\00:02:49.76 the carbon dioxide is removed, where nutrients are exchanged. 00:02:49.80\00:02:53.74 So if you want optimal health, you want optimal circulation. 00:02:53.77\00:02:57.77 >>John: So, a person can do something to improve 00:02:57.81\00:03:02.24 their circulation? 00:03:02.28\00:03:03.48 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:03:03.51\00:03:04.55 >>John: Okay. 00:03:04.58\00:03:05.68 Well, we must talk about some of those concrete steps 00:03:05.71\00:03:06.85 because my, my thinking is, you know, 00:03:06.88\00:03:09.62 you take a pill to lower your blood pressure, or you walk. 00:03:09.65\00:03:12.52 You can do certain things to deal with diabetes 00:03:12.55\00:03:14.59 and hardening of the arteries. 00:03:14.62\00:03:15.82 But I don't know if most people have ever stopped to think, 00:03:15.86\00:03:19.56 I can improve my blood fluidity. 00:03:19.59\00:03:22.36 I can impact my circulation. 00:03:22.40\00:03:25.20 Uh, uh, let's take the 25,000-foot view, the overview. 00:03:25.23\00:03:28.27 Improve your circulation, and what sort of things can improve? 00:03:28.30\00:03:31.24 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, let's take a good example. 00:03:31.27\00:03:32.57 One is heart disease. 00:03:32.61\00:03:34.01 If you look at conventional heart disease risk factors 00:03:34.04\00:03:36.68 like cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, 00:03:36.71\00:03:39.05 and you put them side by side with markers or indicators 00:03:39.08\00:03:42.58 of blood fluidity, 00:03:42.62\00:03:43.59 there's strange terms, things like viscosity, 00:03:43.62\00:03:46.82 fibrinogen, that's a, which is a clotting factor. 00:03:46.86\00:03:49.32 But if you look at those, 00:03:49.36\00:03:50.56 sometimes those are more powerful risk factors 00:03:50.59\00:03:54.10 than the ones that we're measuring. 00:03:54.13\00:03:56.36 For example, fibrinogen. 00:03:56.40\00:03:58.30 They did a study in Europe. 00:03:58.33\00:03:59.73 They looked at people with low fibrinogens. 00:03:59.77\00:04:01.90 That's good. Their blood is going to be more fluid. 00:04:01.94\00:04:04.14 And they compared them to people with high fibrinogens. 00:04:04.17\00:04:07.44 Those with the low fibrinogens had only about 1/4 to 1/5 00:04:07.48\00:04:11.91 the risk of having a heart attack. 00:04:11.95\00:04:13.55 >>John: So does that mean in, instead of, 00:04:13.58\00:04:15.38 or as well as saying, 00:04:15.42\00:04:17.49 "I must eat more almonds; I must eat more celery," 00:04:17.52\00:04:20.52 we might want to be saying things like, 00:04:20.56\00:04:22.29 "I've got to do something about this fibrinogen or fibrinogens"? 00:04:22.32\00:04:25.93 >>Dr. DeRose: Here's the practical way I look at it. 00:04:25.96\00:04:27.60 I mean, you're connecting the dots perfectly, 00:04:27.60\00:04:29.86 but the reality is you walk into the average doctor office, 00:04:29.90\00:04:32.77 and he or she is not going to say, 00:04:32.80\00:04:34.47 "Oh, yeah, we'll just do the panel with the fibrinogen, 00:04:34.50\00:04:36.81 the viscosity, and the Von Willebrand's factor." 00:04:36.84\00:04:39.17 These are all things that they measure and research. 00:04:39.21\00:04:41.61 But what I'm saying is simple lifestyle factors, 00:04:41.64\00:04:44.35 simple lifestyle habits can actually make a difference 00:04:44.38\00:04:47.45 in all of these factors across the board. 00:04:47.48\00:04:49.48 You don't have to be measuring them from day to day. 00:04:49.52\00:04:51.45 >>John: Somebody's watching right now, 00:04:51.49\00:04:52.82 they're sitting at home, they're drinking a Coke, 00:04:52.85\00:04:55.36 they're, they haven't taken a walk in forever, 00:04:55.39\00:04:57.63 and they're going to eat their typical high-fat 00:04:57.66\00:05:01.06 standard American diet food. 00:05:01.10\00:05:03.73 And that's okay; that's your choice. 00:05:03.77\00:05:06.33 And the thinking is, "I gotta die anyway. 00:05:06.37\00:05:09.84 I might as well die happy, doing what I love," 00:05:09.87\00:05:13.11 and, and the more pertinent question is, 00:05:13.14\00:05:15.78 from a Christian perspective, why does it even matter? 00:05:15.81\00:05:19.45 This, this is a Bible-teaching television program. 00:05:19.48\00:05:22.12 We're talking about fibrinogens and Von Willebrand's factor 00:05:22.15\00:05:26.05 and so forth. 00:05:26.09\00:05:27.22 Why does that matter in the daily life of a believer? 00:05:27.26\00:05:31.06 >>Dr. DeRose: Here's the way I look at it, John. 00:05:31.09\00:05:33.19 God is trying to communicate with us. 00:05:33.23\00:05:35.20 He's trying to guide us. He's trying to lead us. 00:05:35.23\00:05:37.33 When I sit with my Bible in front of me, 00:05:37.37\00:05:39.73 I want to understand what the Holy Spirit 00:05:39.77\00:05:41.87 is trying to communicate. 00:05:41.90\00:05:43.41 What we find out is when we improve our hemorheology, 00:05:43.44\00:05:46.94 our mental functioning actually measurably improves. 00:05:46.98\00:05:50.88 So if I want to have the most unobstructed pathway 00:05:50.91\00:05:54.65 of communion with my Creator and my Savior, 00:05:54.68\00:05:57.39 I want my blood fluidity to be optimal. 00:05:57.42\00:06:00.09 I want my, as I call it, my Methuselah factor-- 00:06:00.12\00:06:03.36 that's the synonym I use for hemorheology-- 00:06:03.39\00:06:06.03 I want it to be as good as possible. 00:06:06.06\00:06:08.33 >>John: Now, you're a pastor and a physician. 00:06:08.36\00:06:10.10 You've been a practicing physician for many years. 00:06:10.13\00:06:12.37 Is it fair to say, 00:06:12.40\00:06:14.40 in addition to the enhanced relationship with God, 00:06:14.44\00:06:17.67 is it fair to say that a believer, 00:06:17.71\00:06:20.51 someone who's given her or his heart to Jesus Christ, 00:06:20.54\00:06:23.65 does that person really have a responsibility 00:06:23.68\00:06:26.11 to take care of their body? 00:06:26.15\00:06:28.18 >>Dr. DeRose: John, it's amazing to me. 00:06:28.22\00:06:29.88 When you look at God articulating His plan 00:06:29.92\00:06:33.32 for His people, you--reread the book of Deuteronomy. 00:06:33.36\00:06:36.26 God gives the law, 00:06:36.29\00:06:37.46 and then He says why did He give these things: 00:06:37.49\00:06:39.49 "That it may be well with you"; 00:06:39.53\00:06:40.90 that things would go--that, that people would know 00:06:40.93\00:06:43.20 that you're really children of the King. 00:06:43.23\00:06:46.57 And so this whole idea of responsibility, 00:06:46.60\00:06:48.60 Paul speaks about our bodies 00:06:48.64\00:06:50.14 being a temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:06:50.17\00:06:52.44 These concepts come together because when I realize 00:06:52.47\00:06:55.44 that God has entrusted me with something precious, 00:06:55.48\00:06:58.28 this, this gift of health, when I care for my body, 00:06:58.31\00:07:01.48 not only do I have that enhanced relationship, 00:07:01.52\00:07:04.22 but I function better; I feel better. 00:07:04.25\00:07:06.39 I can serve my Lord better. 00:07:06.42\00:07:08.09 And actually I'm a better witness. 00:07:08.12\00:07:09.96 People see my life, and they say, "Well, what are you doing? 00:07:09.99\00:07:13.50 I mean, how come I'm ending up in the doctor's office 00:07:13.53\00:07:16.03 every week, and you're not?" 00:07:16.06\00:07:18.17 >>John: There's a lot to cover here talking about the things 00:07:18.20\00:07:20.70 that impact the Methuselah factor a lot. 00:07:20.74\00:07:23.91 I would just go back to say I believe that this, 00:07:23.94\00:07:26.71 the, the Bible speaks about us being fearfully 00:07:26.74\00:07:29.41 and wonderfully made. 00:07:29.44\00:07:30.81 We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:07:30.85\00:07:33.21 I, I think it's fair to generalize and say, 00:07:33.25\00:07:35.08 by and large, across Christianity, that's forgotten. 00:07:35.12\00:07:39.82 It's neglected. 00:07:39.85\00:07:40.92 As a matter of fact, I think it's rejected. 00:07:40.96\00:07:42.76 Well, we're going to talk about how you can improve 00:07:42.79\00:07:44.49 your blood fluidity. 00:07:44.53\00:07:46.29 Uh, we're talking about lengthening your life 00:07:46.33\00:07:48.10 and living a better life. 00:07:48.13\00:07:49.23 But we're really talking about how you can live forever, 00:07:49.26\00:07:53.34 and that involves blood as well. 00:07:53.37\00:07:54.74 I'll be back with Dr. David DeRose in just a moment. 00:07:54.77\00:07:58.21 ¤[Music]¤ 00:07:58.24\00:08:05.41 >>John: The same killer diseases which are taking 00:08:07.08\00:08:09.32 the lives of millions and millions of people every year 00:08:09.35\00:08:12.32 are taking the lives of Christian believers, 00:08:12.35\00:08:14.16 even though God has told us plainly and clearly 00:08:14.19\00:08:16.52 how we can avoid those diseases. 00:08:16.56\00:08:19.03 Now, you want to avoid them. 00:08:19.06\00:08:20.26 So make sure you get today's free offer, 00:08:20.30\00:08:22.06 "Health Care God's Way," 00:08:22.10\00:08:24.10 which I co-wrote with Dr. John Westerdahl. 00:08:24.13\00:08:27.00 Get "Health Care God's Way." 00:08:27.04\00:08:28.47 Call 1-800-253-3000. 00:08:28.50\00:08:31.81 Write to the address on your screen. 00:08:31.84\00:08:33.68 Make sure you visit iiwoffer.com. 00:08:33.71\00:08:36.68 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:08:37.68\00:08:39.31 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:08:39.35\00:08:40.92 With me is Dr. David DeRose from CompassHealth Consulting. 00:08:40.95\00:08:45.02 We are talking about "The Methuselah Factor," 00:08:45.05\00:08:48.29 how you can live longer and better 00:08:48.32\00:08:51.66 and ultimately how you can live forever. 00:08:51.69\00:08:53.80 Now, a moment ago, we're talking about this thing 00:08:53.83\00:08:55.60 called hemorheology. 00:08:55.63\00:08:57.30 Explain that again for me, if you would. 00:08:57.33\00:08:58.80 >>Dr. David DeRose: Basically, it's the science 00:08:58.83\00:09:00.14 of blood fluidity. 00:09:00.17\00:09:01.27 And the more fluid the blood, the better your health. 00:09:01.30\00:09:03.74 >>John: We talk about blood pressure a lot. 00:09:03.77\00:09:05.81 >>Dr. DeRose: Mm-hmm. 00:09:05.84\00:09:06.74 >>John: Why, why has it taken me this long 00:09:06.78\00:09:10.18 to hear about blood fluidity? 00:09:10.21\00:09:12.28 Why is that not something spoken of more? 00:09:12.31\00:09:14.92 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, it's really shocking 00:09:14.95\00:09:16.28 because there are whole medical societies, 00:09:16.32\00:09:18.72 there's medical journals that are devoted 00:09:18.75\00:09:20.42 to nothing but hemorheology. 00:09:20.46\00:09:21.92 One of them is called 00:09:21.96\00:09:23.32 "Hemorheology and Microcirculation." 00:09:23.36\00:09:25.99 >>John: That sounds exciting. 00:09:26.03\00:09:27.76 >>Dr. DeRose: But, but this is just not filtered 00:09:27.83\00:09:30.37 into the lay dialogue. 00:09:30.40\00:09:31.67 >>John: And it really ought to be, right? 00:09:31.70\00:09:32.60 >>Dr. DeRose: Oh, it really ought to be. 00:09:32.63\00:09:33.80 >>John: Because in here you write about how 00:09:33.84\00:09:36.47 improved blood fluidity can impact and actually decrease 00:09:36.50\00:09:42.38 your risk of cancer. 00:09:42.41\00:09:43.95 How's that? 00:09:43.98\00:09:45.15 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, this is one of the most shocking ones. 00:09:45.18\00:09:46.48 You know, when we talk about stroke and heart attack, 00:09:46.51\00:09:49.22 people say, "Oh, yeah, those are circulatory disorders." 00:09:49.25\00:09:51.85 But when you throw cancer into the mix, people say, 00:09:51.89\00:09:53.96 "Well, how, how could that factor in?" 00:09:53.99\00:09:55.76 >>John: Yeah. 00:09:55.79\00:09:56.96 >>Dr. DeRose: There was a fascinating study some years ago 00:09:56.99\00:09:58.19 where they looked at women who were dealing 00:09:58.23\00:10:00.33 with gynecologic cancer, so, female cancers. 00:10:00.36\00:10:03.16 The researchers measured markers of blood fluidity 00:10:03.20\00:10:06.13 before they had their cancer surgery. 00:10:06.17\00:10:08.84 Now, what comes as no surprise 00:10:08.87\00:10:10.91 is the worse their blood fluidity, 00:10:10.94\00:10:12.77 the greater their risk of having thrombosis or blood clots 00:10:12.81\00:10:16.11 after the surgery. 00:10:16.14\00:10:16.81 >>John: Sure. 00:10:16.85\00:10:17.75 >>Dr. DeRose: We say, "Obvious," right? 00:10:17.78\00:10:18.38 >>John: Right. 00:10:18.41\00:10:19.51 >>Dr. DeRose: But what was shocking is those markers 00:10:19.55\00:10:21.35 of blood fluidity also predicted survival. 00:10:21.38\00:10:25.22 And when the researchers were writing about it, 00:10:25.25\00:10:27.16 what they said is what's happening-- 00:10:27.19\00:10:29.26 this is the, their theory for why these things 00:10:29.29\00:10:31.56 would be connected. 00:10:31.59\00:10:32.63 They say if your blood is not really fluid, 00:10:32.66\00:10:34.76 you're going to have little microclots in the blood vessels. 00:10:34.83\00:10:39.10 When that happens, cancer cells that are circulating 00:10:39.13\00:10:42.64 in the bloodstream can lodge in some of these areas 00:10:42.67\00:10:45.77 that are now relatively isolated from the immune system, 00:10:45.81\00:10:49.38 and they can set up shop; they can set up metastasis. 00:10:49.41\00:10:52.31 So the cancer spreads more readily 00:10:52.35\00:10:55.08 if your blood fluidity is poor. 00:10:55.12\00:10:57.25 >>John: Okay, we've come this far without really talking yet, 00:10:57.29\00:11:00.32 and there's a lot to talk about. 00:11:00.36\00:11:01.82 I doubt we can do this in just one program. 00:11:01.86\00:11:04.76 We haven't started to talk yet 00:11:04.79\00:11:07.03 about how a person can improve their blood fluidity. 00:11:07.03\00:11:10.77 Um, I'm going to guess you can do it by exercising. 00:11:10.80\00:11:13.70 I'm going to guess you can do it by, by eating healthily. 00:11:13.74\00:11:16.37 Let's, let's discuss those, but not yet. 00:11:16.40\00:11:18.21 What I want to ask you is, 00:11:18.24\00:11:19.57 is there, is there one simple way a person can improve 00:11:19.61\00:11:22.84 their blood fluidity that somebody like me would say, 00:11:22.88\00:11:26.88 "Didn't realize that, that's a surprise"? 00:11:26.92\00:11:28.95 Give me one. 00:11:28.98\00:11:30.22 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, one of the biggest surprises we've seen 00:11:30.25\00:11:31.92 as we've been bringing this message out into communities 00:11:31.95\00:11:34.89 throughout the country 00:11:34.92\00:11:36.39 is that actually blood donation may be something 00:11:36.42\00:11:40.30 that could improve the blood fluidity of many Americans. 00:11:40.33\00:11:43.50 >>John: By giving blood away, 00:11:43.53\00:11:45.43 by temporarily having less blood, 00:11:45.47\00:11:47.60 it may improve your blood fluidity. 00:11:47.64\00:11:50.27 How's that? 00:11:50.31\00:11:51.71 >>Dr. DeRose: What the thinking is, is that many of us 00:11:51.74\00:11:53.54 actually have higher what we call hematocrits than optimal. 00:11:53.58\00:11:57.38 Now, hematocrit is a technical measurement; 00:11:57.41\00:11:59.85 it's actually the percentage of your blood 00:11:59.88\00:12:02.62 that is made up of red blood cells. 00:12:02.65\00:12:04.75 And what we find is--talk about mental performance. 00:12:04.79\00:12:08.59 As your hematocrit drops down, if you're anemic, 00:12:08.62\00:12:12.89 you can have poor mental performance 00:12:12.93\00:12:14.40 because you can't get oxygen to the brain. 00:12:14.46\00:12:16.77 The hematocrit comes up, mental performance improves, 00:12:16.80\00:12:19.80 but as it keeps rising, then mental performance drops. 00:12:19.83\00:12:23.71 And so many Americans have blood that is thicker, if you will-- 00:12:23.74\00:12:27.28 I hate that term, but I don't know a better one to use 00:12:27.31\00:12:29.41 for lay folks. 00:12:29.44\00:12:30.58 Uh, if the blood is thicker, it's not flowing as well; 00:12:30.61\00:12:33.35 you've got more blood cells; there's more congestion; 00:12:33.38\00:12:36.32 mental performance decreases. 00:12:36.35\00:12:37.89 So, donating blood actually, for many people, 00:12:37.92\00:12:41.92 can be beneficial. 00:12:41.96\00:12:42.92 >>John: Well, I want to encourage you 00:12:42.96\00:12:44.26 not just to think about it but to get involved 00:12:44.29\00:12:46.33 in donating blood. 00:12:46.36\00:12:47.56 You help a lot of people, and evidently you help yourself. 00:12:47.60\00:12:50.50 So now, is there another thing? 00:12:50.53\00:12:51.73 What, what's one other thing that might not seem intuitive 00:12:51.77\00:12:55.84 that would help this? 00:12:55.87\00:12:57.17 We're looking for a-- 00:12:57.21\00:12:58.44 you know, I'm saying we're looking for a simple thing. 00:12:58.47\00:13:00.38 You know, the fact of the matter is, even if this was hard, 00:13:00.41\00:13:03.45 people should do it because it's life-changing and live-saving. 00:13:03.48\00:13:05.81 But give me another simple thing. 00:13:05.85\00:13:07.52 Donating blood is good for blood fluidity. 00:13:07.55\00:13:09.85 What's something else that might, 00:13:09.88\00:13:11.62 might seem a little surprising? 00:13:11.65\00:13:13.52 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, this one may not be as surprising, 00:13:13.56\00:13:15.99 but it draws on an illustration you used a while ago. 00:13:16.02\00:13:18.63 You talked about someone watching It Is Written, 00:13:18.66\00:13:21.06 and they had a certain type of beverage. 00:13:21.10\00:13:22.86 You mentioned a sugar-sweetened beverage. 00:13:22.90\00:13:24.63 >>John: Mm-hmm. 00:13:24.67\00:13:25.60 >>Dr. DeRose: A lot of people don't realize 00:13:25.63\00:13:26.70 that when we up our intake of sugar, 00:13:26.74\00:13:29.07 so do our triglycerides, a type of blood fat, tend to rise. 00:13:29.10\00:13:32.97 And as triglycerides go up, blood fluidity goes down. 00:13:33.01\00:13:37.61 So, sugar has gotten a lot of bad raps, 00:13:37.65\00:13:41.12 but it's deserved when you look at blood fluidity. 00:13:41.15\00:13:44.82 Those sugar-sweetened beverages, one of the leading causes 00:13:44.85\00:13:48.22 of what many people are calling an obesity epidemic 00:13:48.26\00:13:51.33 in the Western world, 00:13:51.36\00:13:52.46 so it's not just the body fat connection; 00:13:52.49\00:13:54.56 it's also the blood fat connection 00:13:54.56\00:13:56.90 when it comes to sugar-sweetened drinks. 00:13:56.93\00:13:58.60 >>John: I saw this thing where somebody, uh, 00:13:58.63\00:14:00.57 covenanted to only eat healthy food, 00:14:00.60\00:14:03.41 and that healthy food was an utter train wreck 00:14:03.44\00:14:06.81 when it came to sugar content. 00:14:06.84\00:14:07.84 There's a lot of hidden sugar. 00:14:07.88\00:14:09.48 How can we recognize that hidden sugar, 00:14:09.51\00:14:11.91 the easy steps to get rid of a ton of sugar out of our lives? 00:14:11.95\00:14:15.32 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, I love your question 00:14:15.35\00:14:16.79 because a lot of people say, 00:14:16.82\00:14:17.95 "Hey, I'm just eating the organic cereals." 00:14:17.99\00:14:20.06 >>John: Right. 00:14:20.09\00:14:21.12 >>Dr. DeRose: But you walk down the cereal aisle, 00:14:21.16\00:14:22.39 and here's a great place to practice what we recommend 00:14:22.42\00:14:24.73 in the book. 00:14:24.76\00:14:25.76 We say, look at the total carbohydrate content 00:14:25.79\00:14:28.16 of a food and then look at the sugar content. 00:14:28.20\00:14:31.60 Divide the two. 00:14:31.63\00:14:32.47 So if there's 25 grams of carbohydrate 00:14:32.50\00:14:35.30 and 5 grams of sugar, 00:14:35.34\00:14:36.60 you would divide 25 by 5; you'd come up with...? 00:14:36.64\00:14:39.31 >>John: Five. 00:14:39.34\00:14:39.97 >>Dr. DeRose: Very good. 00:14:40.01\00:14:40.71 [John exhales dramatically] 00:14:40.74\00:14:41.81 [laughs] Five is that magic number-- 00:14:41.84\00:14:43.58 if it's five or larger. 00:14:43.61\00:14:48.05 In other words, that means you have less, 00:14:48.08\00:14:49.92 much less sugar than carbohydrates. 00:14:49.95\00:14:51.82 So in other words, if it was 24 and 3, 00:14:51.85\00:14:54.66 that figure would be 8. 00:14:54.69\00:14:55.82 >>John: Right. 00:14:55.86\00:14:56.96 >>Dr. DeRose: So five or greater, that means you've got 00:14:56.99\00:14:58.66 a lot more complex carbohydrate than simple sugars. 00:14:58.69\00:15:02.20 That is a reasonable choice. 00:15:02.23\00:15:03.87 >>John: So you want it to be a big number? 00:15:03.90\00:15:05.07 A bigger number? 00:15:05.10\00:15:05.80 >>Dr. DeRose: A bigger number. 00:15:05.83\00:15:06.77 So that means a lot of complex carbohydrates 00:15:06.80\00:15:08.97 relative to small amounts of simple sugar. 00:15:09.00\00:15:11.47 >>John: We've got about a minute. 00:15:11.51\00:15:13.04 Uh, uh, in this minute, talk to me just very quickly, 00:15:13.07\00:15:16.34 because in the book there's a, a really a very simple 00:15:16.38\00:15:19.28 30-day program that someone can say, 00:15:19.31\00:15:21.25 okay, I'm going to dive into this, make some changes, 00:15:21.28\00:15:23.95 and so on. 00:15:23.99\00:15:25.19 Let's get started on that. We'll tease it just a little bit. 00:15:25.22\00:15:27.36 What's a simple change somebody can make? 00:15:27.39\00:15:28.89 We talked about cutting that sugar out. 00:15:28.92\00:15:30.73 Uh, where do you recommend a person begin 00:15:30.76\00:15:33.43 when they want to improve their blood fluidity? 00:15:33.46\00:15:35.50 >>Dr. DeRose: Basically, you're exactly right. 00:15:35.53\00:15:37.00 The book contains a 30-day program. 00:15:37.03\00:15:40.20 And the place I recommend people begin 00:15:40.24\00:15:42.67 is on day 1 of the program. 00:15:42.70\00:15:44.17 Each of the last 30 chapters is one day in our 30-day program. 00:15:44.21\00:15:48.78 >>John: Now, this one surprised me just a little bit. 00:15:48.81\00:15:52.25 I'd, I'd heard it before in certain circles, 00:15:52.28\00:15:54.32 but a little bit surprising. 00:15:54.35\00:15:55.65 You've a, a, a chapter called "Beans, Beans, Beans." 00:15:55.68\00:16:00.79 Beans help blood. How? 00:16:00.82\00:16:04.33 >>Dr. DeRose: Beans are amazing. 00:16:04.36\00:16:05.66 Years ago, when I was interested in diabetes treatment, 00:16:05.69\00:16:08.73 I ran across a medical research article talking about 00:16:08.76\00:16:11.50 how the fiber in beans, as the researchers put it, 00:16:11.53\00:16:14.50 improves all aspects of diabetic control. 00:16:14.54\00:16:17.61 When you improve blood sugar dynamics in the body, 00:16:17.64\00:16:20.21 just like we were talking about triglycerides, 00:16:20.24\00:16:22.28 you improve blood fluidity. 00:16:22.31\00:16:23.61 But beans are more than that; 00:16:23.65\00:16:24.98 they've got all kinds of phytochemicals 00:16:25.01\00:16:27.18 that also help your blood flow better. 00:16:27.22\00:16:29.22 >>John: And a lot of people never eat beans. 00:16:29.25\00:16:30.55 Just don't eat them, unless they get them out of the can, 00:16:30.59\00:16:32.25 and they're sweetened with sugar and seasoned with bacon. 00:16:32.29\00:16:34.82 Where can people implement beans into their diet? 00:16:34.86\00:16:37.33 >>Dr. DeRose: Basically, get beans; cook them. 00:16:37.36\00:16:39.89 It doesn't matter whether they're lentils or peas, 00:16:39.93\00:16:41.93 garbanzo beans or black-eyed peas, kidney beans. 00:16:41.96\00:16:45.37 Just pick up a simple recipe book. 00:16:45.40\00:16:48.30 Just cook them in a crockpot, 00:16:48.34\00:16:49.87 the simplest thing in the world to do. 00:16:49.90\00:16:52.31 It's great stuff. 00:16:52.34\00:16:53.58 >>John: And that's what I like about "The Methuselah Factor." 00:16:53.61\00:16:56.14 It'll revolutionize your life. 00:16:56.18\00:16:57.71 It'll impact you powerfully and positively. 00:16:57.75\00:17:00.05 You'll live better. 00:17:00.08\00:17:01.75 The better news yet is that you may live forever. 00:17:01.78\00:17:03.75 We'll talk about that in a moment. 00:17:03.79\00:17:05.75 I'll be back with more from Dr. David DeRose straight ahead. 00:17:05.79\00:17:10.46 ¤[Music]¤ 00:17:10.49\00:17:17.13 >>John: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 00:17:19.33\00:17:21.27 exists because of the kindness of people just like you. 00:17:21.30\00:17:24.71 To support this international life-changing ministry, 00:17:24.74\00:17:27.94 please call us now at 800-253-3000. 00:17:27.98\00:17:32.21 You can send your tax-deductible gift 00:17:32.25\00:17:33.68 to the address on your screen, 00:17:33.72\00:17:35.15 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 00:17:35.18\00:17:39.05 Thank you for your prayers and for your financial support. 00:17:39.09\00:17:41.82 Our number again is 800-253-3000, 00:17:41.86\00:17:45.99 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 00:17:46.03\00:17:49.10 >>Dr. DeRose: Hello, I'm Dr. David DeRose, 00:17:50.10\00:17:52.00 a specialist in internal medicine 00:17:52.03\00:17:53.70 and preventive medicine. 00:17:53.74\00:17:55.40 And I've been surprised over the years in working with patients 00:17:55.44\00:17:58.71 and studying the medical research literature 00:17:58.74\00:18:01.18 just how powerful hemorheology is when it comes to health. 00:18:01.21\00:18:06.75 You may be wondering, what is hemorheology? 00:18:06.78\00:18:08.92 Well, I call it the Methuselah factor. 00:18:08.95\00:18:11.89 And that's the title of my book. 00:18:11.92\00:18:14.09 "The Methuselah Factor" really helps you connect with things 00:18:14.12\00:18:17.79 that can help your blood be more fluid. 00:18:17.83\00:18:20.23 You say, "Why is that important?" 00:18:20.26\00:18:22.16 It's important because it can help you decrease your risk 00:18:22.20\00:18:24.67 of a stroke or a heart attack, even lower your risk of cancer. 00:18:24.70\00:18:28.30 But it's a whole lot more than just preventing killer diseases. 00:18:28.34\00:18:32.24 If you improve your blood fluidity, 00:18:32.27\00:18:34.41 your mind will work better, 00:18:34.44\00:18:36.28 you'll perform physically better, 00:18:36.31\00:18:38.48 and you'll decrease your risk of dementia. 00:18:38.51\00:18:41.18 So, don't hesitate. 00:18:41.52\00:18:43.39 Dive into "The Methuselah Factor." 00:18:43.42\00:18:45.09 Make a difference in your life 00:18:45.12\00:18:47.19 and the life of those that you love. 00:18:47.22\00:18:49.19 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me today 00:18:50.19\00:18:51.83 on It Is Written. 00:18:51.86\00:18:53.19 Dr. David DeRose is the president 00:18:53.23\00:18:55.30 of CompassHealth Consulting, 00:18:55.33\00:18:56.90 and he's written a remarkable book. 00:18:56.93\00:18:59.13 It is called "The Methuselah Factor." 00:18:59.17\00:19:02.24 Methuselah in the Bible lived to be 969, 00:19:02.27\00:19:05.34 and while I'm sure Dr. DeRose is not promising you 00:19:05.37\00:19:07.58 that you can live to be 969, 00:19:07.61\00:19:10.01 the book does tell you how you can learn how to live sharper, 00:19:10.05\00:19:13.25 leaner, longer, and better in 30 days or-- 00:19:13.28\00:19:16.05 in 30 days or less. 00:19:16.08\00:19:18.82 Hey, I want to ask you about that, 00:19:18.85\00:19:20.09 and I know you're an honest fellow, 00:19:20.12\00:19:21.32 and we go back quite some time... 00:19:21.36\00:19:24.36 but you're, you're, well, you're stating very upfront 00:19:24.39\00:19:27.60 that in 30 days or less, people are going to see marked change. 00:19:27.60\00:19:33.00 Is that really fair to say that? 00:19:33.03\00:19:34.80 >>Dr. David DeRose: It is; I mean, typically we see 00:19:34.84\00:19:36.57 dramatic changes in short times 00:19:36.60\00:19:38.31 when people make serious lifestyle changes. 00:19:38.34\00:19:40.98 We give them a 30-day program. 00:19:41.01\00:19:42.34 They're making changes each day and sticking with them. 00:19:42.38\00:19:45.11 I think of a patient I had years ago, 00:19:45.15\00:19:47.12 actually changed my perspective, 00:19:47.15\00:19:49.35 came to one of these residential lifestyle change programs, 00:19:49.38\00:19:52.39 where actually I was getting some training 00:19:52.42\00:19:53.79 during my medical school years. 00:19:53.82\00:19:55.52 The guy could not walk across the small parking lot 00:19:55.56\00:19:59.89 of the health center. 00:19:59.93\00:20:01.03 A few weeks later, he was walking seven or eight miles 00:20:01.06\00:20:04.67 on the trails. 00:20:04.70\00:20:05.77 No question, this guy's blood fluidity 00:20:05.80\00:20:08.44 had dramatically improved. 00:20:08.47\00:20:10.31 >>John: You're a pastor. I'm a pastor. 00:20:10.34\00:20:13.88 We don't want to see just healthy sinners, right? 00:20:13.91\00:20:16.38 Uh, as good as that would be. 00:20:16.41\00:20:17.78 We would hope that a person embarks on a journey 00:20:17.81\00:20:19.88 that leads them to faith in God or increases faith in God. 00:20:19.91\00:20:22.95 And what I'm intrigued by here is that in the 30-day program, 00:20:22.98\00:20:27.82 day 7 is called Rest and Refresh, 00:20:27.86\00:20:31.36 day 14: Seek Spirituality. 00:20:31.39\00:20:34.73 And there are other, uh, similar aspects to this. 00:20:34.73\00:20:38.23 So in order to improve my blood fluidity, 00:20:38.27\00:20:41.47 in order to have a, to dramatically improve my health, 00:20:41.50\00:20:44.91 rest? Seek spirituality? 00:20:44.94\00:20:48.01 Explain that for me. 00:20:48.04\00:20:48.98 >>Dr. DeRose: This is amazing stuff, John. 00:20:49.01\00:20:50.48 You know, a lot of people think, 00:20:50.51\00:20:51.85 hey, we know where the year comes from, right? 00:20:51.88\00:20:54.42 And that's the earth going around the sun. 00:20:54.45\00:20:56.65 We know the day is based on the earth spinning on its axis. 00:20:56.69\00:20:59.75 And people say we understand the month. 00:20:59.79\00:21:01.92 Its origins come from lunar cycles. 00:21:01.96\00:21:04.06 But most people don't realize that built into our physiology 00:21:04.09\00:21:07.86 is a seven-day rhythm. 00:21:07.86\00:21:09.43 We share some of the research on circaseptan rhythms; 00:21:09.46\00:21:12.97 that's what they're called. 00:21:13.00\00:21:14.24 And what we encourage people to do is to tap into those rhythms 00:21:14.27\00:21:17.44 to optimize how they deal with stress, 00:21:17.47\00:21:19.74 how they look at life, and how they implement lifestyle change. 00:21:19.77\00:21:23.71 It is not just coincidence that the Bible 00:21:23.75\00:21:26.41 and just about every other society in the world today 00:21:26.45\00:21:30.25 keeps a seven-day cycle. 00:21:30.29\00:21:32.35 Why is that? 00:21:32.39\00:21:33.59 We need a day to step apart from the normal wear and tear, 00:21:33.62\00:21:38.86 from the normal stresses, and really to refocus and refresh. 00:21:38.89\00:21:42.43 >>John: What I'm fascinated by--you look into the Bible; 00:21:42.46\00:21:44.27 you get a chapter in, and God says, 00:21:44.30\00:21:47.77 "Here's a day for rest." 00:21:47.80\00:21:48.94 >>Dr. DeRose: Mm-hmm. 00:21:48.97\00:21:50.21 >>John: I think it's fair to say that if you look across society, 00:21:50.24\00:21:53.48 that that, that idea of a day of rest is disappearing. 00:21:53.51\00:21:57.11 And if you look across Christianity, 00:21:57.15\00:21:59.65 it's disappearing, too. 00:21:59.68\00:22:00.78 You go back in essentially any church in the land, 00:22:00.82\00:22:03.85 back in Grandma's day or Great-grandma's day, 00:22:03.89\00:22:06.62 uh, people respected and observed that idea 00:22:06.65\00:22:09.39 of a day of rest. 00:22:09.42\00:22:10.39 We're losing that, aren't we? 00:22:10.43\00:22:11.83 >>Dr. DeRose: We are, and one of the things I draw out 00:22:11.86\00:22:13.63 in the book, actually, 00:22:13.66\00:22:15.03 is an observation that neuroscientists are making, 00:22:15.06\00:22:17.80 and it's simply this: 00:22:17.83\00:22:19.00 That we tend to fall into the trap of prioritizing 00:22:19.03\00:22:23.17 urgent things that are not as important 00:22:23.20\00:22:26.41 as the real key things in life 00:22:26.44\00:22:28.71 that are of such value, that we let those slip. 00:22:28.74\00:22:31.68 And what this whole idea of a day of rest is kind of a time 00:22:31.71\00:22:34.38 to reset and to say, "Where are my priorities?" 00:22:34.42\00:22:37.45 We say during this 30-day program-- 00:22:37.49\00:22:39.75 I say to my reader: 00:22:39.79\00:22:41.49 I want you taking a day off and say, 00:22:41.52\00:22:43.93 "Where have I gone in the last week? 00:22:43.96\00:22:45.53 Where have I gone in the last two weeks? 00:22:45.56\00:22:47.40 And am I on the trajectory 00:22:47.40\00:22:49.36 I want to continue for the rest of my life?" 00:22:49.40\00:22:51.37 >>John: One thing of a practical nature in the book here, 00:22:51.40\00:22:53.30 and I notice this: 00:22:53.34\00:22:54.07 improve your Methuselah factor; 00:22:54.10\00:22:55.54 improve your bone and joint health. 00:22:55.57\00:22:58.04 Now, I have a brother who was, was putting on 00:22:58.07\00:23:00.38 far more weight than he needed 00:23:00.41\00:23:02.41 and couldn't exercise because his knees were shot, 00:23:02.44\00:23:05.58 and he had to get a bilateral knee replacement, 00:23:05.61\00:23:08.28 and then he could start working. 00:23:08.32\00:23:09.98 Uh, so you can easily get caught in this downward spiral. 00:23:10.02\00:23:13.39 I like the idea of looking after your joints so that-- 00:23:13.42\00:23:16.62 well, so that what? 00:23:16.66\00:23:18.36 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, actually, there is evidence 00:23:18.39\00:23:19.89 that you can regenerate cartilage. 00:23:19.93\00:23:21.70 It may not be as good as the cartilage the Creator gave you 00:23:21.73\00:23:24.23 to begin with. 00:23:24.27\00:23:25.43 We have a great story in there from an orthopedic surgeon 00:23:25.47\00:23:27.77 who actually saw this in someone who got on a program 00:23:27.80\00:23:31.31 to improve their blood fluidity. 00:23:31.34\00:23:33.07 Here is the point, John. 00:23:33.11\00:23:34.71 Our joints need optimal circulation. 00:23:34.74\00:23:37.68 They're often not getting it. 00:23:37.71\00:23:39.48 Well-, well-documented the importance between improving 00:23:39.51\00:23:42.82 blood fluidity and having really healthy joints. 00:23:42.85\00:23:45.92 >>John: So we live a little longer in this world, 00:23:45.95\00:23:47.96 and I don't want to say that as though I don't care. 00:23:47.99\00:23:50.16 I think if you can get another week, you're doing well. 00:23:50.19\00:23:52.39 Another year, you're doing well. 00:23:52.43\00:23:53.73 The average American lives almost 79 years, 00:23:53.76\00:23:57.73 which isn't terribly long. 00:23:57.77\00:23:59.77 But I know that, that as a believer, 00:23:59.80\00:24:02.00 as a pastor, as a physician, 00:24:02.04\00:24:04.31 your hope is that a person can live forever. 00:24:04.34\00:24:07.61 And that has something to do with blood as well, 00:24:07.64\00:24:09.74 but not my blood or yours. 00:24:09.78\00:24:11.55 >>Dr. DeRose: No, no, it's an amazing connection. 00:24:11.58\00:24:13.72 Just like we talked about the benefits that come to us 00:24:13.75\00:24:16.72 when we donate blood. 00:24:16.75\00:24:18.32 We think of that amazing greatest gift of blood 00:24:18.35\00:24:22.42 and our Savior giving His life for us. 00:24:22.46\00:24:24.96 And really, that's the ultimate connection 00:24:24.99\00:24:27.40 that not only transforms my value for me personally, 00:24:27.40\00:24:31.33 why I want to take care of my health, 00:24:31.37\00:24:33.20 but gives me that hope of eternity. 00:24:33.23\00:24:36.10 >>John: The, the story of the cross is the greatest story 00:24:36.14\00:24:39.14 that was ever told, and, and just as there are simple things 00:24:39.17\00:24:43.11 we can do to take care of our physical health, 00:24:43.14\00:24:45.25 there are simple things that we can do to live forever. 00:24:45.28\00:24:48.45 And one of the simplest things, I think, 00:24:48.48\00:24:49.88 and one of the most commonsense things 00:24:49.92\00:24:52.15 is when you consider the story found in, 00:24:52.19\00:24:54.52 in this book, the Holy Bible, 00:24:54.56\00:24:56.66 the story of a God who so loved the world 00:24:56.69\00:24:58.96 that He gave His only begotten Son, 00:24:58.99\00:25:00.96 the story of a Savior who died on a cross, 00:25:01.00\00:25:03.60 belief is a pretty simple thing. 00:25:03.63\00:25:07.20 >>Dr. DeRose: It's simple conceptually, 00:25:07.24\00:25:08.57 but our culture today, we're so accustomed to doubt. 00:25:08.60\00:25:11.61 We just have to take God at His word. 00:25:11.64\00:25:13.44 >>John: Believe if you, if you take God at His word, 00:25:13.48\00:25:15.74 you will see God move in your life, 00:25:15.78\00:25:19.05 bless and benefit your life miraculously. 00:25:19.08\00:25:21.35 Dr. DeRose, I am grateful that you've taken time 00:25:21.38\00:25:23.82 to talk about "The Methuselah Factor." 00:25:23.85\00:25:26.25 It seems to me to be a very accessible way 00:25:26.29\00:25:28.99 for somebody to improve their life in this world. 00:25:29.02\00:25:32.16 If they follow the 30-day program, 00:25:32.19\00:25:33.63 it won't be in this world, but also in the world to come. 00:25:33.66\00:25:35.83 >>John: The same killer diseases which are taking the lives 00:25:36.83\00:25:39.57 of millions and millions of people every year 00:25:39.60\00:25:42.10 are taking the lives of Christian believers, 00:25:42.14\00:25:44.01 even though God has told us plainly and clearly 00:25:44.04\00:25:46.34 how we can avoid those diseases. 00:25:46.37\00:25:48.88 Now, you want to avoid them. 00:25:48.91\00:25:50.08 So make sure you get today's free offer, 00:25:50.11\00:25:51.91 "Health Care God's Way," 00:25:51.95\00:25:54.05 which I co-wrote with Dr. John Westerdahl. 00:25:54.08\00:25:56.35 Get "Health Care God's Way." 00:25:56.38\00:25:58.35 Call 1-800-253-3000. 00:25:58.39\00:26:01.66 Write to the address on your screen. 00:26:01.69\00:26:03.59 Make sure you visit iiwoffer.com. 00:26:03.63\00:26:06.70 >>John Bradshaw: Dr. DeRose, let's wrap it up quickly here. 00:26:07.50\00:26:09.60 Let's summarize "The Methuselah Factor." 00:26:09.63\00:26:11.80 Better blood fluidity results in...?
