Nothing destroyed. Nothing killed. 00:01:43.63\00:01:48.50 The system upon which the earth was based 00:01:48.54\00:01:50.44 was one of mutual giving, mutual blessing. 00:01:50.47\00:01:54.31 Everything blessed and benefited everything else. 00:01:54.34\00:01:59.05 It's a system so foreign to what we see today 00:01:59.08\00:02:02.25 it's just about impossible to imagine. 00:02:02.28\00:02:05.15 The system we know, the one that we're surrounded by 00:02:05.19\00:02:08.19 and immersed in, is one where taking, or selfishness, 00:02:08.22\00:02:13.23 is the organizing principle. 00:02:13.26\00:02:15.20 Look around. 00:02:15.23\00:02:16.40 Just about every living creature in our world 00:02:16.43\00:02:19.17 and virtually everything that we human beings do 00:02:19.20\00:02:23.17 demonstrates this system. 00:02:23.20\00:02:25.27 Consider the scorpion. It's an incredible thing. 00:02:25.94\00:02:29.18 It stalks its prey and then grabs it with powerful claws 00:02:29.21\00:02:32.81 and delivers an excruciating, deadly venom with the stinger 00:02:32.85\00:02:37.35 on the tip of its tail. 00:02:37.39\00:02:39.22 Its prey dies in agony. 00:02:39.25\00:02:41.56 The venom is so powerful that some types of scorpion 00:02:41.59\00:02:45.13 are capable of killing humans. 00:02:45.16\00:02:47.40 And whether you are fascinated or revulsed by scorpions, 00:02:47.46\00:02:50.83 I think we can agree they don't reflect the loving, 00:02:50.87\00:02:54.70 giving, selfless character of God as described in the Bible. 00:02:54.74\00:02:59.81 In fact, a careful reading of the Bible tells us 00:02:59.84\00:03:02.98 that God did not create this cunningly 00:03:03.01\00:03:05.48 and intentionally designed creature as we now see it. 00:03:05.51\00:03:09.82 And that raises some hugely important questions. 00:03:09.85\00:03:13.25 And one of those questions is, 00:03:13.29\00:03:15.46 if God did not create the earth and all of its lifeforms 00:03:15.49\00:03:18.93 with selfishness as its organizing principle, 00:03:18.96\00:03:22.60 then how did the world come to be overtaken by this system? 00:03:22.63\00:03:26.74 And what does the existence of this creature say about God, 00:03:26.77\00:03:30.77 whom the Bible describes as all-powerful? 00:03:30.81\00:03:33.61 If in the beginning He created this world to be kind and gentle 00:03:33.64\00:03:36.95 and only blessing, how did He allow it to become so twisted? 00:03:36.98\00:03:42.35 To find out, we go to the prequel of the Bible. 00:03:42.38\00:03:44.45 We'll start a little more than halfway through the Bible 00:03:44.49\00:03:47.29 in the book of Ezekiel. 00:03:47.32\00:03:48.59 ¤[soft music]¤ 00:03:48.62\00:03:49.59 In Ezekiel 28 we find the beginning of a story 00:03:49.62\00:03:52.23 about a high-ranking angel who was beautiful and full of wisdom 00:03:52.26\00:03:57.00 and who led an extraordinary life. 00:03:57.03\00:03:59.53 This angel was evidently adorned with the most beautiful jewels 00:03:59.57\00:04:03.10 and gold. 00:04:03.14\00:04:04.44 And as we're told in verse 14, 00:04:04.47\00:04:06.78 he was the anointed covering cherub 00:04:06.81\00:04:10.05 who was in attendance to God. 00:04:10.08\00:04:12.41 Now, this was a very highly ranked angel, 00:04:14.38\00:04:16.69 perhaps the highest ranking of all of the angels in heaven, 00:04:16.72\00:04:20.22 first in authority and responsibility 00:04:20.26\00:04:22.86 in God's government. 00:04:22.89\00:04:24.59 ¤[soft music]¤ 00:04:25.59\00:04:26.83 The God of heaven is the Ruler and the Lord of this universe, 00:04:26.86\00:04:31.60 and His administration is an organized system. 00:04:31.63\00:04:35.70 Ephesians chapter 3 makes clear that God wants us to understand 00:04:35.74\00:04:39.67 how that administration functions. 00:04:39.71\00:04:42.11 He wants us to understand and appreciate 00:04:42.14\00:04:44.48 how the universe operates. 00:04:44.51\00:04:46.41 And He wants us to understand that even more clearly 00:04:46.45\00:04:49.68 when we look at the life and the ministry and the death of Jesus. 00:04:49.72\00:04:54.46 What's taking place here on the earth 00:04:54.49\00:04:57.03 is very important to heaven. 00:04:57.06\00:04:59.76 I'll have more in just a moment. 00:04:59.79\00:05:01.60 ¤[music]¤ 00:05:01.63\00:05:07.60 >>Announcer: For thousands of years, 00:05:10.67\00:05:12.14 humanity has spoken of a paradise called heaven. 00:05:12.17\00:05:15.14 But what does the Bible say about heaven? 00:05:15.18\00:05:17.65 Where is it? 00:18:34.64\00:18:37.31 the body tries to stop that bleeding. 00:18:37.35\00:18:39.28 >>John: Mmm. 00:18:39.31\00:18:39.98 >>Dr. Hayes: So during surgery, 00:18:40.02\00:18:41.45 you've got that reduction of bleeding that, uh, 00:18:41.48\00:18:44.82 is a benefit from the venom. 00:18:44.85\00:18:47.12 We can rest assured that these animals were very different 00:18:47.16\00:18:49.59 before sin came into the world. 00:18:49.62\00:18:51.39 Uh, the best understanding we probably have 00:18:51.43\00:18:55.30 is looking at Isaiah where we're told what snakes will be like 00:18:55.33\00:18:58.60 in heaven, where, uh, a child can sit 00:18:58.63\00:19:01.27 next to the nest of a cobra, and a child does not have to fear. 00:19:01.30\00:19:05.87 So we know they weren't harmful. 00:19:05.91\00:19:07.98 There's been a lot of change that's happened 00:19:08.01\00:19:09.48 since the creation. 00:19:09.51\00:19:11.18 Uh, I would say that's God creating in life 00:19:11.21\00:19:15.42 the ability to change, 00:19:15.45\00:19:17.25 the ability to adapt to a, uh, a sinful world 00:19:17.29\00:19:21.32 where there's death. 00:19:21.36\00:19:22.76 And, um, and it's led to amazing biodiversity where animals 00:19:22.79\00:19:26.90 become uniquely adapted to many different environments. 00:19:26.93\00:19:30.27 The, the richness of different lifeforms that we see-- 00:19:30.30\00:19:33.37 it's extraordinary. 00:19:33.40\00:19:35.04 The years that I've spent studying these snakes 00:19:35.07\00:19:37.47 has given me a lot of insight into the natural world, 00:19:37.51\00:19:40.41 a, a better understanding of, uh, I would say, 00:19:40.44\00:19:44.05 God's concern about, uh, the natural environments. 00:19:44.08\00:19:48.45 I think that, uh, snakes have a special place in nature. 00:19:48.48\00:19:53.52 God's kept them there, 00:19:53.56\00:19:55.46 and, um, it's taught me to be a lot more respectful. 00:19:55.49\00:19:58.23 I don't want to be one that goes out and injures nature. 00:19:58.26\00:20:01.86 And, um, it's also because of the, the danger to humans, 00:20:01.90\00:20:06.80 which is sometimes overstated, but, but very real. 00:20:06.84\00:20:10.14 Um, I, I've, I've gained a better recognition of the fact 00:20:10.17\00:20:13.91 that healthy humans need healthy environments. 00:20:13.94\00:20:16.31 We can't just go removing this species or that species 00:20:16.34\00:20:19.11 to make it a safer place for us, because it's all working 00:20:19.15\00:20:22.65 together in an amazing way that God has put together, 00:20:22.68\00:20:25.82 and we've been given responsibility 00:20:25.85\00:20:27.32 to take care of it, even the snakes. 00:20:27.36\00:20:29.69 ¤[soft guitar music]¤ 00:20:30.53\00:20:33.19 >>John: Now let's continue to follow our story. 00:20:33.23\00:20:35.70 Lucifer is in open rebellion, 00:20:35.73\00:20:38.53 and at this point God changes his name to Satan, 00:20:38.57\00:20:42.47 meaning "enemy" or "adversary" or, fittingly, "opponent." 00:20:42.50\00:20:47.51 In Revelation 12:7 and 8, we're told that Satan and his angels 00:20:47.54\00:20:50.85 lost the war in heaven, 00:20:50.88\00:20:52.41 and they were evicted from heaven and cast to the earth. 00:20:52.45\00:20:56.58 So Satan is on the earth, having lost the war in heaven, 00:20:56.62\00:21:00.06 but he hasn't given up his claims against God. 00:21:00.09\00:21:03.43 He attacks God by attacking what was created in the image of God. 00:21:03.46\00:21:08.26 He attacked humanity: Adam and Eve. 00:21:08.30\00:21:11.37 Satan approached Eve using a snake as a medium. 00:21:11.40\00:21:15.60 And he stuck to the message he disseminated in heaven. 00:21:15.64\00:21:18.94 Look at what he says to Eve, 00:21:18.97\00:21:21.11 and it'll give you an idea of what he said 00:21:21.14\00:21:22.84 to the angels in heaven. 00:21:22.88\00:21:25.08 In Genesis 3:1-3, the serpent "said to the woman, 00:21:25.11\00:21:28.85 'Has God indeed said, 00:21:28.88\00:21:30.92 "You shall not eat of every tree of the garden"?' 00:21:30.95\00:21:33.62 And the woman said to the serpent, 00:21:33.66\00:21:35.32 'We may eat [of] the fruit of the trees of the garden; 00:21:35.36\00:21:37.89 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst 00:21:37.93\00:21:40.13 of the garden, God has said, 00:21:40.16\00:21:41.76 "You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die."'" 00:21:41.80\00:21:46.00 Now, look at what Satan says in verses 4 and 5: 00:21:46.03\00:21:49.24 "Then the serpent said to the woman, 'You will not surely die. 00:21:49.27\00:21:54.44 For God knows that in the day you eat of it 00:21:54.48\00:21:56.98 your eyes will be opened, 00:21:57.01\00:21:58.81 and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.'" 00:21:58.85\00:22:03.82 Now, did you notice that? Satan called God a liar. 00:22:03.85\00:22:07.82 God said that they would die if they disobeyed, 00:22:07.86\00:22:10.33 and Satan said, "You will not surely die." 00:22:10.36\00:22:14.00 Then he said that if they ate the fruit, 00:22:14.03\00:22:16.60 they would become like God, 00:22:16.63\00:22:18.23 which meant that God was selfish and was keeping blessings 00:22:18.27\00:22:21.50 from them, and that the way to become like God 00:22:21.54\00:22:24.27 was through unbridled self-interest. 00:22:24.31\00:22:27.61 Satan said that God's system was designed to keep power 00:22:27.64\00:22:30.81 and achievement away from people. 00:22:30.85\00:22:33.68 A third of the angels believed the lie, 00:22:33.72\00:22:37.22 and so did Adam and Eve. 00:22:37.25\00:22:39.12 Satan won the second battle, 00:22:39.15\00:22:41.39 and the consequences were not only enormous and immediate, 00:22:41.42\00:22:45.43 but they continue to impact you and me daily. 00:22:45.46\00:22:49.16 One of the terrible consequences of Adam and Eve's sin 00:22:49.83\00:22:52.87 was a change in the management of the earth. 00:22:52.90\00:22:56.47 God had given Adam and Eve dominion over the earth, 00:22:56.50\00:22:59.74 but when Satan conquered them, 00:22:59.77\00:23:02.04 he took what was theirs as the spoils of war. 00:23:02.08\00:23:05.95 Revelation 12:9 says that Satan and his angels were cast down 00:23:05.98\00:23:10.39 to the earth. 00:23:10.42\00:23:11.52 The earth was not given to them. 00:23:11.55\00:23:14.19 But when we next see Satan in the book of Job, 00:23:14.22\00:23:16.73 he's attending a meeting of the sons of God, and he's there, 00:23:16.76\00:23:19.76 evidently, as the representative of this earth. 00:23:19.79\00:23:24.60 Jesus in John 12 and John 14 00:23:24.63\00:23:27.00 referred to Satan as "the prince of this world." 00:23:27.04\00:23:31.57 But the really critical thing is what Satan did 00:23:31.61\00:23:34.91 once he usurped our dominion. 00:23:34.94\00:23:37.28 This fallen angel, incredibly powerful, 00:23:37.31\00:23:40.92 stunningly intelligent, immediately began to twist 00:23:40.95\00:23:44.65 the earth and everything in it into a system that was based 00:23:44.69\00:23:49.42 on his organizing principle, the system of selfishness. 00:23:49.46\00:23:54.93 And the end result is the earth in which we live. 00:23:54.93\00:23:59.77 This is a world where God and His system based on love 00:24:00.67\00:24:05.31 is pitted against Satan and his system based on selfishness. 00:24:05.34\00:24:10.05 So why did God let Satan continue to exist 00:24:10.08\00:24:13.42 after his rebellion in heaven? 00:24:13.45\00:24:15.38 And why would He let Satan pervert the earth 00:24:15.42\00:24:17.65 and put his system of selfishness in place? 00:24:17.69\00:24:20.92 How does this campaign end? 00:24:20.96\00:24:23.06 And how does all of this relate to Jesus? 00:24:23.09\00:24:26.53 What we're going to see more and more clearly 00:24:26.56\00:24:28.90 is that selfishness is a terrible, terrible system 00:24:28.93\00:24:33.10 for running the earth. 00:24:33.13\00:24:34.54 We see the evidence for that in the world all around us. 00:24:34.57\00:24:38.21 ¤[soft guitar music]¤ 00:24:38.24\00:24:40.24 So what do we do, 00:24:40.28\00:24:41.38 living in a world that's full of selfishness and sin? 00:24:41.41\00:24:45.11 We can't get out. 00:24:45.15\00:24:46.48 So what can we do while we're here? 00:24:46.51\00:24:49.02 Paul made an interesting statement in Romans 6 00:24:49.05\00:24:51.89 in verse 16 when he said, 00:24:51.92\00:24:53.82 "Know ye not, that to whom [you] yield yourselves 00:24:53.86\00:24:58.23 servants to obey, his servants [you] are to whom [you] obey; 00:24:58.26\00:25:03.47 whether of sin unto death, 00:25:03.50\00:25:05.83 or of obedience unto righteousness?" 00:25:05.87\00:25:09.00 In this world of sin, we get to choose who we're going to serve. 00:25:09.04\00:25:12.77 If you wish, you can choose to serve sin, 00:25:12.81\00:25:16.41 and you know who you'd be serving if you did that. 00:25:16.44\00:25:19.38 Or you can choose to serve God, to serve obedience, 00:25:19.41\00:25:22.28 to serve righteousness. 00:25:22.32\00:25:24.22 The right choice to make is obvious, 00:25:24.25\00:25:26.49 but it might not be easy, and that's because our heart, 00:25:26.52\00:25:30.13 affected by sin, leans in the direction of sin. 00:25:30.16\00:25:34.00 We can war with ourselves, but you can make the choice 00:25:34.00\00:25:38.40 and invite the God who made a perfect earth, 00:25:38.43\00:25:41.67 and who is one day going to remake this sin-affected earth, 00:25:41.70\00:25:45.34 to remake your heart today. 00:25:45.37\00:25:48.24 After a disastrous fall into sin, 00:25:48.28\00:25:50.41 David prayed and said to God, "Create in me a clean heart, 00:25:50.45\00:25:54.25 O God; and renew a right spirit within me." 00:25:54.28\00:25:57.52 That's Psalm 51 in verse 10. 00:25:57.55\00:26:00.06 And God did. 00:26:00.09\00:26:01.72 And what God did for David, He'll do for you. 00:26:01.76\00:26:05.33 And that means, even though this world has been hijacked, 00:26:05.36\00:26:08.10 even though the government of the universe 00:26:08.13\00:26:09.56 has been dramatically impacted, you can have peace, 00:26:09.60\00:26:13.77 and you can know that eternal life is yours. 00:26:13.80\00:26:17.47 >>John Bradshaw: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 00:26:19.14\00:26:21.08 exists because of the kindness of people just like you. 00:26:21.11\00:26:24.51 To support this international life-changing ministry, 00:26:24.55\00:26:27.78 please call us now at 800-253-3000. 00:26:27.82\00:26:31.89 You can send your tax-deductible gift 00:26:31.92\00:26:33.49 to the address on your screen, 00:26:33.52\00:26:34.96 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 00:26:34.99\00:26:38.79 Thank you for your prayers and for your financial support. 00:26:38.83\00:26:41.60 Our number again is 800-253-3000, 00:26:41.63\00:26:45.77 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 00:26:45.80\00:26:48.77 >>John Bradshaw: Let's pray together now. 00:26:50.37\00:26:51.97 Our Father in heaven, 00:26:52.01\00:26:53.07 ¤[soft music]¤ in Jesus' name we thank You 00:26:53.11\00:26:55.21 that though we live in a sin-affected world, 00:26:55.24\00:26:57.41 there is a way of escape; His name is Jesus. 00:26:57.45\00:27:00.45 That though Your government has been so dramatically impacted, 00:27:00.48\00:27:03.55 though the world has been hijacked, 00:27:03.59\00:27:07.16 we are grateful to know 00:27:07.19\00:27:09.09 that there is an eternal future for us 00:27:09.12\00:27:11.99 as our lives are surrendered to You. 00:27:12.03\00:27:13.83 We can choose You in the midst of the madness. 00:27:13.86\00:27:16.50 We can choose You in the midst of the confusion and the chaos, 00:27:16.53\00:27:19.20 and so we do. 00:27:19.23\00:27:20.57 Friend, would you choose God now?
