>>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:19.18\00:00:21.22 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:21.25\00:00:23.92 It captured the attention of a nation: 00:00:23.95\00:00:26.42 the trial nearly 100 years ago of a Tennessee school teacher 00:00:26.45\00:00:31.29 accused of teaching the theory of evolution in public schools. 00:00:31.33\00:00:35.80 On one side, former presidential candidate 00:00:35.83\00:00:38.27 William Jennings Bryan argued in behalf of creation, 00:00:38.30\00:00:42.10 while Clarence Darrow, 00:00:42.14\00:00:43.74 who was referred to as the "attorney for the damned," 00:00:43.77\00:00:46.54 defended high school teacher and sometime football coach 00:00:46.57\00:00:49.38 John Thomas Scopes. 00:00:49.41\00:00:51.38 Many people today forget that Scopes, 00:00:51.41\00:00:53.28 the teacher put on trial, actually lost the case. 00:00:53.31\00:00:57.09 He was found guilty and fined $100 for breaking the law 00:00:57.12\00:01:00.66 of the state of Tennessee, 00:01:00.69\00:01:01.82 which forbade the teaching of the theory of evolution. 00:01:01.86\00:01:05.63 In fact, the teaching of evolution remained illegal 00:01:05.66\00:01:08.13 in Tennessee until the late 1960s. 00:01:08.16\00:01:11.33 But unfortunately for Bryan's argument, 00:01:11.37\00:01:14.34 his defense of the biblical creation story 00:01:14.37\00:01:16.44 fell somewhat flat. 00:01:16.47\00:01:19.01 History remembers the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925 00:01:19.04\00:01:23.35 as a major setback for the biblical teaching of creation. 00:01:23.38\00:01:26.82 Five days after the trial ended, July the 26th, 1925, 00:01:26.85\00:01:32.29 Bryan arranged for his final argument against evolution 00:01:32.32\00:01:35.32 to be published, an argument that he hadn't been able 00:01:35.36\00:01:38.53 to deliver during the proceedings of the trial itself. 00:01:38.56\00:01:42.03 He then retired to his bedroom for an afternoon nap, 00:01:42.06\00:01:44.67 hoping to gather strength for a sermon 00:01:44.70\00:01:46.74 that he was gonna preach that night. 00:01:46.77\00:01:49.24 But he never woke up. 00:01:49.27\00:01:51.14 In this final address, Bryan spoke of the logic 00:01:51.17\00:01:54.81 of the theory of evolution and its application to human hearts. 00:01:54.84\00:02:00.05 He wrote how the theory Charles Darwin promoted 00:02:00.08\00:02:03.89 regarding the origin of the human race appeared to endorse 00:02:03.92\00:02:08.06 the elimination of the weak members of civilized society. 00:02:08.09\00:02:12.36 So let's keep in mind that according to the theory 00:02:12.39\00:02:14.30 of evolution, the natural world makes progress by the strong 00:02:14.36\00:02:19.90 devouring the weak. 00:02:19.93\00:02:21.90 The principle is known as the survival of the fittest, 00:02:21.94\00:02:24.54 what Darwin called natural selection. 00:02:24.57\00:02:28.18 Many people in the late 19th century and beyond 00:02:28.21\00:02:30.81 started to apply this principle in society, 00:02:30.85\00:02:33.45 and it wasn't hard to see where it was going. 00:02:33.48\00:02:36.18 It led to the oppression of society's weaker members: 00:02:36.22\00:02:39.79 the poor, the dispossessed, racial and ethnic groups 00:02:39.82\00:02:43.39 that were thought to be inferior. 00:02:43.43\00:02:45.53 The thought was that it would achieve social 00:02:45.56\00:02:47.96 and economic advancement. 00:02:47.96\00:02:50.50 That theory became known as social Darwinism. 00:02:50.53\00:02:54.54 In Bryan's words, aimed at the scientists 00:02:54.57\00:02:57.17 who were leading people to accept Darwin's theory, 00:02:57.21\00:02:59.61 "Science is a magnificent material force, 00:02:59.64\00:03:02.51 but it is not a teacher of morals. 00:03:02.54\00:03:05.35 It can perfect machinery, 00:03:05.38\00:03:07.08 but it adds no moral restraints to protect society 00:03:07.12\00:03:11.52 from the misuse of the machine." 00:03:11.55\00:03:14.49 Bryan claimed that evolution substituted the law of force 00:03:14.52\00:03:18.23 for the law of love, and he asked his readers the question 00:03:18.26\00:03:21.96 posed by Pontius Pilate as Jesus stood before him: 00:03:22.00\00:03:26.20 "The question, 'What shall I do with Jesus?' 00:03:26.23\00:03:29.07 must be answered. 00:03:29.10\00:03:30.61 A bloody, brutal doctrine-- evolution--demands, 00:03:30.64\00:03:34.91 as the rabble did 1,900 years ago, 00:03:34.94\00:03:37.71 that He be crucified." 00:03:37.75\00:03:39.58 It's fair to say that William Jennings Bryan got it right 00:03:39.91\00:03:43.22 when he described the assault made by the theory of evolution 00:03:43.25\00:03:46.49 on the principles of biblical Christianity. 00:03:46.52\00:03:49.26 The fact is that Darwin's theory on the origin 00:03:49.29\00:03:52.06 of the natural world is much more than an attack 00:03:52.09\00:03:55.50 on the historical accuracy of the book of Genesis. 00:03:55.53\00:03:58.53 What's even more important is the attack made by this theory 00:03:58.57\00:04:01.54 on the heart of the gospel, 00:04:01.57\00:04:03.74 of the idea of the world's need of a Savior, 00:04:03.77\00:04:07.11 and on Christ's insistence that we treat the weak and vulnerable 00:04:07.14\00:04:11.61 with justice and mercy. 00:04:11.65\00:04:13.58 Evolution attacks both of those ideas. 00:04:13.62\00:04:17.62 Today we're beginning a new series. 00:04:17.65\00:04:19.52 It's called "Great Chapters of the Bible." 00:04:19.55\00:04:22.22 There are 1,189 chapters in the Bible. 00:04:22.26\00:04:26.83 Today we're gonna be looking at the very first one, 00:04:26.86\00:04:29.16 Genesis chapter 1. 00:04:29.20\00:04:31.07 Genesis 1 speaks to us about the sovereignty of God, 00:04:31.10\00:04:34.67 about the great power of God. 00:04:34.70\00:04:36.87 And because it deals with creation, 00:04:36.91\00:04:38.47 it shows us that the God of heaven is the God of nature. 00:04:38.51\00:04:42.41 Genesis 1 demonstrates that God is self-existent. 00:04:42.44\00:04:46.75 And all of this runs counter to what a lot of people 00:04:46.78\00:04:49.55 have to say about God. 00:04:49.58\00:04:51.89 There's no shortage of voices that say there is no God. 00:04:51.92\00:04:54.96 An actor who portrayed God in a couple of movies 00:04:54.99\00:04:57.26 was quoted as having said, 00:04:57.29\00:04:59.03 "My belief system doesn't support a creator as such, 00:04:59.06\00:05:02.70 as we can call God, who created us in His/Her/Its image." 00:05:02.73\00:05:07.40 Stating that he believes people invented God, 00:05:07.44\00:05:09.60 he said, "So if I believe in God, and I do, 00:05:09.64\00:05:12.57 it's because I think I'm God." 00:05:12.61\00:05:16.34 The famed scientist, the late Stephen Hawking, 00:05:16.38\00:05:18.91 claimed that there is no God. 00:05:18.95\00:05:21.55 Hawking died in 2018. 00:05:21.58\00:05:24.59 So what we can know for certain 00:05:24.62\00:05:26.49 is that there's now no Stephen Hawking. 00:05:26.52\00:05:28.79 One Pulitzer-prize-winning author wrote this: 00:05:28.82\00:05:31.53 "In the search for meaning we must not forget that the gods, 00:05:31.56\00:05:35.10 (or God, for that matter) are a concept of the human mind; 00:05:35.13\00:05:39.17 they are the creature of man, not vice versa. 00:05:39.20\00:05:42.74 They are needed and invented to give meaning and purpose 00:05:42.77\00:05:45.74 to the puzzle that is life on earth, 00:05:45.77\00:05:47.91 to explain strange and irregular phenomena of nature, 00:05:47.94\00:05:50.95 haphazard events 00:05:50.98\00:05:52.11 and, above all, 00:05:52.15\00:05:53.08 irrational human conduct. 00:05:53.11\00:05:54.98 They exist to bear the burden of all things 00:05:55.02\00:05:57.59 that cannot be comprehended 00:05:57.62\00:05:58.89 except by supernatural intervention or design." 00:05:58.92\00:06:02.89 The first chapter of Genesis teaches-- 00:06:02.92\00:06:04.73 in fact, the whole Bible teaches--the exact opposite. 00:06:04.76\00:06:08.63 Genesis 1 is unambiguous. 00:06:08.66\00:06:11.23 There is a God. 00:06:11.27\00:06:12.57 He existed before nature existed. 00:06:12.60\00:06:15.47 He created the world, and He purpose-built human beings 00:06:15.50\00:06:18.07 for a very specific reason. 00:06:18.11\00:06:20.64 The personal God depicted throughout Holy Scripture 00:06:20.68\00:06:23.81 is the ultimate definition of reality. 00:06:23.85\00:06:27.32 Genesis chapter 1 begins with a statement of fact. 00:06:27.35\00:06:31.25 It says, 00:06:31.29\00:06:32.45 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 00:06:32.49\00:06:36.32 The earth was without form, and void; 00:06:36.36\00:06:38.16 and darkness was on the face of the deep. 00:06:38.19\00:06:40.33 And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face 00:06:40.36\00:06:42.13 of the waters. 00:06:42.16\00:06:43.37 [And] God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light. 00:06:43.40\00:06:46.80 And God saw the light, that it was good; 00:06:46.84\00:06:48.67 and God divided the light from the darkness. 00:06:48.70\00:06:50.91 God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. 00:06:50.94\00:06:54.98 So the evening and the morning were the first day." 00:06:55.01\00:06:57.51 That's Genesis 1:1-5. 00:06:57.55\00:07:00.88 Not only is God present before He brings the natural world 00:07:00.92\00:07:04.22 into existence, but the elements needed to sustain life 00:07:04.25\00:07:07.96 are present before their natural sources are created. 00:07:07.99\00:07:12.23 You read Genesis 1, 00:07:12.26\00:07:13.29 and you see light existing before the sun exists, 00:07:13.33\00:07:16.93 and you wonder how that can be. 00:07:16.97\00:07:19.00 Well, Genesis is telling us that God is the source of light 00:07:19.03\00:07:23.41 and life in the natural world, as well as the spiritual world. 00:07:23.44\00:07:29.41 Now, many people have looked at the Creation story 00:07:29.44\00:07:31.51 and read where the Bible says "the first day," 00:07:31.55\00:07:34.52 "the second day," "the third day," and so on, 00:07:34.55\00:07:38.62 and because of the influence of Charles Darwin and others 00:07:38.65\00:07:41.66 like him, they've heard where some have said 00:07:41.69\00:07:43.86 that the earth came into existence 00:07:43.89\00:07:45.96 over a long period of time, 00:07:45.99\00:07:49.33 and so they decide that the days of Creation cannot be literal-- 00:07:49.36\00:07:53.30 maybe each day represents millions of years. 00:07:53.34\00:07:57.64 So, are the days of Creation literal or figurative? 00:07:57.67\00:08:02.71 I'll have that in a moment 00:08:02.74\00:08:04.18 as "Great Chapters of the Bible" continues. 00:08:04.21\00:08:06.51 ¤[Music]¤ 00:08:41.02\00:08:45.12 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written. 00:08:46.12\00:08:48.02 Today, "Great Chapters of the Bible" 00:08:48.06\00:08:50.33 and we're looking at the first chapter of the Bible, 00:08:50.36\00:08:53.33 Genesis chapter 1. 00:08:53.36\00:08:54.73 It tells the Creation story. 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.63 The word "genesis" means "beginning" or "origin." 00:08:56.67\00:09:00.44 And Genesis 1 recounts the beginning, 00:09:00.47\00:09:02.77 the origin of the world. 00:09:02.80\00:09:05.51 It tells us that the world was created in six days. 00:09:05.54\00:09:09.14 But, were these really six literal 24-hour periods? 00:09:09.18\00:09:15.98 Or were they something different? 00:09:16.02\00:09:17.85 It's true that people have been questioning 00:09:17.89\00:09:19.35 the idea of six literal days for centuries. 00:09:19.39\00:09:22.96 Whereas early church scholars like Origen and Augustine 00:09:22.99\00:09:26.59 didn't believe in six literal days of Creation, 00:09:26.63\00:09:30.37 Martin Luther and the Protestant reformers did. 00:09:30.40\00:09:34.77 But while Origen and Augustine didn't arrive 00:09:34.80\00:09:36.87 at their conclusions because of anything to do with evolution, 00:09:36.91\00:09:40.14 many people today reinterpret what Genesis 1 says 00:09:40.18\00:09:43.75 in order to make it fit with evolutionary theory. 00:09:43.78\00:09:47.65 Let's look at that. 00:09:47.68\00:09:49.15 Now, for one thing, there's nothing to suggest 00:09:49.18\00:09:51.59 that Genesis chapter 1 is figurative. 00:09:51.62\00:09:54.42 It tells us that an actual God 00:09:54.46\00:09:56.56 actually created the actual earth. 00:09:56.59\00:09:59.63 Pretty straightforward. 00:09:59.66\00:10:00.86 There's nothing in the text itself that suggests 00:10:00.90\00:10:03.30 that the days are not days, 00:10:03.33\00:10:04.80 and there's nothing literary about Genesis 1 that suggests 00:10:04.83\00:10:08.74 that the days aren't real days. 00:10:08.77\00:10:11.77 The Hebrew word for "day" in Genesis 1 is "yom," 00:10:11.81\00:10:15.08 and it means "a day," 24 hours. 00:10:15.11\00:10:19.38 What Genesis chapter 1 makes abundantly clear 00:10:19.41\00:10:22.35 is that the days of Creation simply cannot be understood 00:10:22.38\00:10:26.25 as symbolic. 00:10:26.29\00:10:27.89 Following God's creative activity each day 00:10:27.92\00:10:29.92 is the statement 00:10:29.96\00:10:31.03 "So the evening and the morning were the first day," 00:10:31.06\00:10:33.63 or the second day, the third day, and so forth. 00:10:33.66\00:10:36.50 Now, of course you can argue that. 00:10:36.53\00:10:38.37 There are people who believe that the earth is flat; 00:10:38.40\00:10:40.97 they argue against it being round. 00:10:41.00\00:10:43.57 But anyone who wants to argue that the days in Genesis 1 00:10:43.61\00:10:46.37 are not literal days, well, they're entitled to do so, 00:10:46.41\00:10:50.41 but they're arguing against God, 00:10:50.45\00:10:53.11 against plain statements in the Bible. 00:10:53.15\00:10:55.82 And that, well, that never works out well. 00:10:55.85\00:10:59.55 Now, Genesis 1 and verse 6: 00:10:59.59\00:11:03.29 "Then God said, 00:11:03.32\00:11:04.89 'Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, 00:11:04.93\00:11:07.96 and let it divide the waters from the waters.' 00:11:07.96\00:11:11.13 [Then] God made the firmament, and divided the waters 00:11:11.17\00:11:14.14 which were under the firmament 00:11:14.17\00:11:15.50 from the waters which were above 00:11:15.54\00:11:17.37 the firmament; and it was so. 00:11:17.41\00:11:19.51 And God called the firmament heaven. 00:11:19.54\00:11:21.81 So the evening and the morning were the second day." 00:11:21.84\00:11:24.48 That's verses 6 through 8. 00:11:24.51\00:11:26.21 Now, here we get a glimpse of the incredible world 00:11:26.25\00:11:28.88 that God made. 00:11:28.92\00:11:30.22 On the second day of Creation week, 00:11:30.25\00:11:32.49 the atmospheric heavens were brought into existence, 00:11:32.52\00:11:35.96 and they were placed between the waters on the earth's surface 00:11:35.99\00:11:40.10 and the waters above the atmosphere. 00:11:40.13\00:11:42.30 Now, when the Flood came in Genesis chapter 7, 00:11:42.33\00:11:45.63 "The fountains of the great deep were broken up, 00:11:45.67\00:11:48.07 and the windows of heaven were opened." 00:11:48.10\00:11:50.24 Genesis 7, verse 11. 00:11:50.27\00:11:52.14 The story picks up in Genesis chapter 1 and verse 9: 00:11:52.17\00:11:57.38 "Then God said, 'Let the waters under the heavens 00:11:57.41\00:12:00.68 be gathered together into one place, 00:12:00.72\00:12:02.75 and let the dry land appear'; 00:12:02.78\00:12:04.82 and it was so. 00:12:04.85\00:12:05.89 And God called the dry land earth, 00:12:05.92\00:12:08.02 and the gathering together of the waters He called seas. 00:12:08.06\00:12:10.53 And God saw that it was good. 00:12:10.56\00:12:12.49 Then God said, 'Let the earth bring forth grass, 00:12:12.53\00:12:15.06 the herb that yields seed, 00:12:15.10\00:12:16.67 and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, 00:12:16.70\00:12:19.90 whose seed is in itself, on the earth'; 00:12:19.93\00:12:22.44 and it was so. 00:12:22.47\00:12:23.37 And the earth brought forth grass, 00:12:23.41\00:12:24.97 the herb that yields seed according to its kind, 00:12:25.01\00:12:27.41 and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself 00:12:27.44\00:12:29.98 according to its kind. 00:12:30.01\00:12:31.15 And God saw that it was good. 00:12:31.18\00:12:32.81 So the evening and the morning were the third day." 00:12:32.85\00:12:35.95 Genesis 1, verses 9 through 13. 00:12:35.98\00:12:38.79 Now, notice, the Creation story tells us not only 00:12:38.82\00:12:42.16 that light existed before the sun was created, 00:12:42.19\00:12:45.53 but plants and other vegetation did also. 00:12:45.56\00:12:49.46 You see, God isn't dependent on nature, as we know it, 00:12:49.50\00:12:53.10 in order for life to be sustained. 00:12:53.13\00:12:55.74 God is above nature, 00:12:55.77\00:12:58.31 and He's the source of everything that nature requires. 00:12:58.34\00:13:02.94 I want you to notice that in verses 11 and 12 00:13:02.98\00:13:05.15 we read that the plants God created were to reproduce 00:13:05.18\00:13:09.05 "according to its kind." 00:13:09.08\00:13:11.15 Now, evolutionary theory claims that plants and animals change 00:13:11.19\00:13:14.72 from simple forms into very different, 00:13:14.76\00:13:17.39 very complicated forms. 00:13:17.43\00:13:19.76 The Bible, by contrast, tells us that God designed nature 00:13:19.79\00:13:23.10 to reproduce itself "according to its kind," 00:13:23.13\00:13:27.64 which leads me to this point. 00:13:27.67\00:13:31.27 A lot of Christians claim to believe the theory of evolution, 00:13:31.31\00:13:34.04 non-Christians, too. 00:13:34.08\00:13:35.94 A lot of Christian or religious teachers say that they see 00:13:35.98\00:13:39.75 no conflict between evolution and the Bible. 00:13:39.78\00:13:44.79 Popes, over the years, have said repeatedly 00:13:44.82\00:13:47.09 there's no conflict between evolution and Catholic teaching. 00:13:47.12\00:13:51.26 Numerous Protestant teachers have said 00:13:51.29\00:13:53.33 that evolution and the Bible can peacefully coexist. 00:13:53.36\00:13:58.83 The problem with that is... 00:13:58.87\00:14:01.50 that's not what the Bible teaches. 00:14:01.54\00:14:04.77 Genesis 1 isn't written in symbols 00:14:04.81\00:14:06.68 that need to be interpreted like many of the prophecies 00:14:06.71\00:14:09.04 in Daniel and Revelation. 00:14:09.08\00:14:10.55 It's clear-cut. It's straightforward. 00:14:10.58\00:14:12.88 And it's abundantly clear 00:14:12.91\00:14:13.98 that Genesis 1 and evolution just don't go together. 00:14:14.02\00:14:19.82 And if believing the Bible puts you out of step 00:14:19.85\00:14:22.72 with a priest or a pastor or a lecturer, then so be it. 00:14:22.76\00:14:27.56 Believing the Bible might put you out of step 00:14:27.60\00:14:29.26 with some people, but it puts you in step with God. 00:14:29.30\00:14:34.04 So, let's continue in Genesis chapter 1: 00:14:34.07\00:14:38.11 "Then God said, 'Let there be lights in the firmament 00:14:38.14\00:14:40.58 of the heavens to divide the day from the night; 00:14:40.61\00:14:42.81 and let them be for signs and seasons, 00:14:42.84\00:14:44.81 and for days and years; and let them be for lights 00:14:44.85\00:14:47.42 in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth'; 00:14:47.45\00:14:50.42 and it was so. 00:14:50.45\00:14:51.42 Then God made two great lights: 00:14:51.45\00:14:52.92 the greater light to rule the day, 00:14:52.95\00:14:55.22 and the lesser light to rule the night. 00:14:55.26\00:14:57.46 He made the stars also. 00:14:57.49\00:14:59.16 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light 00:14:59.19\00:15:01.90 on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, 00:15:01.93\00:15:04.87 and to divide the light from the darkness. 00:15:04.90\00:15:06.74 And God saw that it was good. 00:15:06.77\00:15:08.37 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day." 00:15:08.40\00:15:11.24 That's chapter 1, verses 14 through 19 00:15:11.27\00:15:13.88 in the book of Genesis. 00:15:13.91\00:15:15.48 Now, notice God doesn't name the sun or the moon. 00:15:15.51\00:15:19.55 Why is that? 00:15:19.58\00:15:20.75 Had something to do with this: 00:15:20.78\00:15:22.78 They were worshiped in the ancient world. 00:15:22.82\00:15:25.32 And in Genesis 1, God puts them in their place. 00:15:25.35\00:15:28.82 God made the sun. God made the moon. 00:15:28.86\00:15:32.29 God made everything that we see in nature. 00:15:32.33\00:15:35.00 None of it is worthy of worship. 00:15:35.03\00:15:37.80 Only God is worthy of worship. 00:15:37.83\00:15:41.54 The Creation story continues. Back to Genesis chapter 1: 00:15:41.57\00:15:47.31 "Then God said, 'Let the waters abound with an abundance 00:15:47.34\00:15:50.88 of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth 00:15:50.91\00:15:54.15 across the face of the firmament of the heavens.' 00:15:54.18\00:15:56.79 So God created great sea creatures 00:15:56.82\00:15:58.65 and every living thing that moves, 00:15:58.69\00:16:00.32 with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, 00:16:00.36\00:16:03.19 and every winged bird according to its kind. 00:16:03.22\00:16:05.73 And God saw that it was good." 00:16:05.76\00:16:08.00 Genesis 1:20 and 21. 00:16:08.03\00:16:10.10 Once again, the animals God created were to reproduce 00:16:10.13\00:16:12.70 after their own kind. 00:16:12.73\00:16:14.74 Fish didn't go on to become frogs. 00:16:14.77\00:16:16.50 Reptiles didn't turn into birds. 00:16:16.54\00:16:19.54 Now, you either believe what the Bible is telling you, 00:16:19.57\00:16:21.34 or you don't. 00:16:21.38\00:16:22.68 You decide if God is your authority-- 00:16:22.71\00:16:25.21 or if your high school biology teacher 00:16:25.25\00:16:27.38 happens to be your authority. 00:16:27.42\00:16:29.65 On the sixth day of Creation, we find the same principle at work. 00:16:29.68\00:16:33.25 Back to Genesis chapter 1: 00:16:33.29\00:16:35.46 "Then God said, 'Let the earth bring forth the living creature 00:16:35.49\00:16:39.63 according to its kind: cattle and creeping things 00:16:39.66\00:16:42.26 and beasts of the earth, 00:16:42.30\00:16:43.40 each according to its kind'; and it was so. 00:16:43.43\00:16:46.03 And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind... 00:16:46.07\00:16:48.40 and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. 00:16:48.44\00:16:51.27 And God saw that it was good." 00:16:51.31\00:16:53.34 Genesis 1:24 and 25. 00:16:53.38\00:16:57.15 And then would come Creation's crowning work. 00:16:57.18\00:17:01.12 And what was that? 00:18:59.37\00:19:00.90 let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, 00:19:00.94\00:19:03.47 over the birds of the air, 00:19:03.51\00:19:04.84 and over the cattle, over all the earth 00:19:04.87\00:19:07.34 and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' 00:19:07.38\00:19:10.35 So God created man in His own image; 00:19:10.38\00:19:12.95 in the image of God He created [them]; 00:19:12.98\00:19:15.15 male and female He created them." 00:19:15.18\00:19:18.15 Human beings, according to God's original plan, 00:19:18.19\00:19:20.56 were not only to rule over the natural world, 00:19:20.59\00:19:23.66 they were to reflect the image of God 00:19:23.69\00:19:25.69 through the intimate relationship He designed 00:19:25.73\00:19:27.73 for husbands and wives. 00:19:27.76\00:19:29.60 As God said in Genesis chapter 2, 00:19:29.63\00:19:31.90 "Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, 00:19:31.93\00:19:34.40 and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." 00:19:34.44\00:19:39.34 Now, this is why the New Testament describes 00:19:39.37\00:19:42.04 same-gender intimacy as being contrary to nature 00:19:42.08\00:19:46.38 and why the Word of God speaks so plainly about this. 00:19:46.41\00:19:49.15 The image of God is revealed in humanity 00:19:49.18\00:19:51.99 through male-female intimacy, 00:19:52.02\00:19:54.49 through men and women interacting with each other 00:19:54.52\00:19:56.32 in the spiritual roles that God designed. 00:19:56.36\00:19:59.19 When you distort those roles, 00:19:59.23\00:20:01.76 it leads you away from God's original path. 00:20:01.80\00:20:05.93 Now, I wanna share with you three great errors 00:20:05.97\00:20:08.00 that have come into our world as a result of denying 00:20:08.04\00:20:11.31 the biblical creation story, as recounted in Genesis chapter 1. 00:20:11.34\00:20:14.58 Three. 00:20:14.61\00:20:15.54 The first one: idolatry. 00:20:15.58\00:20:18.05 Once God is dethroned from His place above and beyond 00:20:18.08\00:20:21.62 the natural world, human beings start making up their own gods. 00:20:21.65\00:20:25.55 Someone said years ago that "God created man in His own image, 00:20:25.59\00:20:29.09 and man's been trying to return the favor ever since." 00:20:29.12\00:20:32.29 We read about this in the first chapter of the book of Romans, 00:20:32.33\00:20:35.00 Romans chapter 1: 00:20:35.03\00:20:36.33 "Professing to be wise, they became fools, 00:20:36.36\00:20:38.80 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God 00:20:38.83\00:20:41.30 into an image made like corruptible man-- 00:20:41.34\00:20:44.04 and birds and four-footed [beasts] and creeping things. 00:20:44.07\00:20:46.71 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, 00:20:46.74\00:20:49.24 in the lusts of their hearts, 00:20:49.28\00:20:51.01 to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 00:20:51.05\00:20:53.15 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, 00:20:53.18\00:20:55.45 and worshiped and served the creature 00:20:55.48\00:20:57.62 rather than the Creator." 00:20:57.65\00:20:59.12 That's Romans 1, verses 22 to 25. 00:20:59.15\00:21:01.99 So, first great error? Idolatry. 00:21:02.02\00:21:05.46 Now, a second great error that has come into the world 00:21:05.49\00:21:08.30 due to denying Genesis 1 00:21:08.33\00:21:10.97 is people thinking they can save themselves by self-improvement, 00:21:11.00\00:21:16.44 with no need of God's help. 00:21:16.47\00:21:18.81 According to evolution, humanity and nature combined 00:21:18.84\00:21:22.94 are progressing on an upward path, 00:21:22.98\00:21:25.85 a path of continual improvement. 00:21:25.88\00:21:28.35 But if you look around the world, 00:21:28.38\00:21:30.39 everything suggests to you that that's not happening. 00:21:30.42\00:21:34.59 Deny Genesis 1, deny the creation story, 00:21:34.62\00:21:38.49 and there's no longer a fall of the human race. 00:21:38.53\00:21:41.83 But the Bible is clear: 00:21:41.86\00:21:44.27 The Adam of Genesis is a real historical character. 00:21:44.30\00:21:49.37 It's clear Adam and Eve sinned, 00:21:49.40\00:21:51.37 and their disobedience made it necessary for Jesus, 00:21:51.41\00:21:54.81 the second person of the Godhead, 00:21:54.84\00:21:56.91 to come to the earth as the Messiah, as the second Adam. 00:21:56.95\00:22:01.58 Here's how Paul put it in Romans chapter 5: 00:22:01.62\00:22:04.52 "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, 00:22:04.55\00:22:08.12 and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, 00:22:08.16\00:22:11.69 because all sinned. 00:22:11.73\00:22:13.13 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, 00:22:13.16\00:22:15.93 even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness 00:22:15.96\00:22:18.73 of the transgression of Adam, 00:22:18.77\00:22:20.30 who is a type of Him who was to come. 00:22:20.34\00:22:23.41 Therefore, as through one man's offense 00:22:23.44\00:22:25.41 judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, 00:22:25.44\00:22:28.78 even so through one Man's righteous act 00:22:28.81\00:22:30.81 the free gift came to all men, 00:22:30.85\00:22:32.65 resulting in justification of life. 00:22:32.68\00:22:35.02 For as by one man's disobedience 00:22:35.05\00:22:37.25 many were made sinners, 00:22:37.29\00:22:39.02 so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous." 00:22:39.05\00:22:44.83 Notice how the one man who brought sin to the world 00:22:44.86\00:22:48.06 is identified as Adam. 00:22:48.10\00:22:51.30 You can't read these verses and think of Adam 00:22:51.33\00:22:52.97 as someone generic, uh, a mere symbol of all of humanity. 00:22:53.00\00:22:57.77 The Adam described in the New Testament 00:22:57.81\00:22:59.57 is an historical figure, just as plainly as Jesus 00:22:59.61\00:23:03.04 is understood in the New Testament to be historical also. 00:23:03.08\00:23:06.75 But if the world and humanity, in particular, are on a path 00:23:06.78\00:23:09.68 toward constant natural betterment, 00:23:09.72\00:23:12.62 as evolution teaches, then who needs a savior? 00:23:12.65\00:23:16.93 Sin stops being a reality. 00:23:16.96\00:23:19.29 Reject Genesis 1 and we don't need anyone to save us 00:23:19.33\00:23:22.80 from our sins because the whole idea of sin is incompatible 00:23:22.83\00:23:26.20 with the theory of evolution. 00:23:26.23\00:23:28.10 Or if you spiritualize Genesis 1 away and make it symbolic 00:23:28.14\00:23:31.37 or allegorical, as many do, then you've got nothing more 00:23:31.41\00:23:35.51 than a symbolic, allegorical fall of the human race. 00:23:35.54\00:23:41.25 Now, the third great error you stumble into-- 00:23:41.28\00:23:43.69 and you must, 00:23:43.72\00:23:44.75 when you reject creation and you accept evolution-- 00:23:44.79\00:23:48.16 is the oppression and injustice 00:23:48.19\00:23:50.93 directed at the weak and vulnerable. 00:23:50.96\00:23:53.26 You hear a lot of talk these days about social justice, 00:23:53.29\00:23:56.10 and it's good that people are talking about that. 00:23:56.13\00:23:59.00 But you can't have social justice 00:23:59.03\00:24:00.77 without Genesis chapter 1 because evolution says 00:24:00.80\00:24:04.04 that the weak, the poor, the disadvantaged 00:24:04.07\00:24:07.74 get in the way of social progress. 00:24:07.78\00:24:11.71 Genesis 1 is a tremendously important chapter of the Bible. 00:24:11.75\00:24:15.42 It presents us with clear statements, 00:24:15.45\00:24:18.15 and every one of them offers us hope. 00:24:18.19\00:24:21.36 Think about this. 00:24:21.39\00:24:22.59 "In the beginning God"--the Bible tells us there is a God. 00:24:22.62\00:24:26.73 And what was His first act in Genesis chapter 1? 00:24:26.76\00:24:28.83 The Bible says, "In the beginning God created." 00:24:28.86\00:24:32.20 Why? To give life. 00:24:32.23\00:24:34.07 Let me ask you: Where did you come from? 00:24:34.10\00:24:36.00 I'll tell you: from the hand of God. 00:24:36.04\00:24:39.37 As Genesis 1 says, you were created in God's image. 00:24:39.41\00:24:43.91 The world is not an accident. 00:24:43.95\00:24:45.85 It's not the result of random processes. 00:24:45.88\00:24:48.15 You're not here by chance. 00:24:48.18\00:24:50.79 Now, we know what happened next: 00:24:50.82\00:24:52.89 Sin came into the world. 00:24:52.92\00:24:55.32 And that didn't rid the world of the perfection of Eden, 00:24:55.36\00:24:58.03 at least not permanently. 00:24:58.06\00:24:59.69 You see, what sin took away God is going to restore. 00:24:59.73\00:25:03.97 In the beginning everyone on earth worshiped at God's feet. 00:25:04.00\00:25:08.10 That's going to happen again. 00:25:08.14\00:25:10.17 This ruined earth will be re-created. 00:25:10.21\00:25:13.31 One day soon there'll be no more sin, no more suffering. 00:25:13.34\00:25:17.85 What we had in Genesis 1 we'll have again. 00:25:17.88\00:25:21.68 And think about it like this: 00:25:21.72\00:25:23.49 What God had in Genesis 1 God will have again-- 00:25:23.52\00:25:28.22 a world without the horror and devastation of sin. 00:25:28.26\00:25:34.36 The world got off to a perfect start. 00:25:34.40\00:25:37.57 And thanks to the plan of salvation, 00:25:37.60\00:25:40.20 thanks to Jesus dying on an old rugged cross, 00:25:40.24\00:25:43.54 thanks to a God of love who inhabits eternity, 00:25:43.57\00:25:47.08 one day soon we're gonna live in a perfect world again. 00:25:47.11\00:25:51.15 Do you wanna be part of the perfect future God has planned? 00:25:51.18\00:25:54.75 You can be, by giving your life over to Jesus right now 00:25:54.78\00:25:58.09 and asking Him to live His life in you. 00:25:58.12\00:26:01.49 He'll do it, and He'll do it for you right now. 00:26:01.52\00:26:05.79 ¤[Soft music]¤ 00:26:06.36\00:26:07.40 >>John: It's a question that many people have asked, 00:26:07.46\00:26:09.33 and it's a good question and deserves a good answer: 00:26:09.36\00:26:12.17 Can God be trusted? 00:26:12.20\00:26:14.17 Find out what the Bible has to say. 00:26:14.20\00:26:15.60 Our free offer is "Can God Be Trusted?" 00:26:15.64\00:26:19.21 Call us on 800-253-3000, 00:26:19.24\00:26:22.81 or visit us online at iiwoffer.com. 00:26:22.84\00:26:27.38 800-253-3000, call right now, 00:26:27.42\00:26:32.22 or visit us at iiwoffer.com. 00:26:32.25\00:26:36.26 >>John Bradshaw: Let's pray together now. 00:26:37.36\00:26:39.36 Our Father in heaven, we read Genesis chapter 1, 00:26:39.39\00:26:41.70 and it speaks to us about a loving God who made us 00:26:41.73\00:26:44.43 in His image. 00:26:44.47\00:26:45.60 That's how the Bible begins, and we know how it ends-- 00:26:45.63\00:26:48.90 an earth made new, 00:26:48.94\00:26:51.81 Your people dwelling together with You forever without sin. 00:26:51.84\00:26:56.08 So, heavenly Father, right now we claim that we want this gift; 00:26:56.11\00:27:00.12 we want to be in the earth made new; 00:27:00.15\00:27:01.45 we want to experience what Adam and Eve experienced 00:27:01.48\00:27:03.72 before the Fall. 00:27:03.75\00:27:06.45 Thank You that we can through Jesus, and so we claim Him now. 00:27:06.49\00:27:09.92 Friend, I know what you might be thinking: 00:27:09.96\00:27:11.46 "I'm not worthy; I'm a sinner; I've done so much wrong. 00:27:11.49\00:27:14.10 Why would God bother with me?" 00:27:14.10\00:27:15.20 I understand you might be thinking that. 00:27:15.23\00:27:17.43 But think of what God did. 00:27:17.47\00:27:18.67 God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, 00:27:18.70\00:27:22.27 so that when you believe, you will know 00:27:22.30\00:27:24.81 that you would not perish but have everlasting life. 00:27:24.84\00:27:27.58 Can you believe in the God of Genesis 1? 00:27:27.61\00:27:30.31 Friend, reach out to God just now; 00:27:30.35\00:27:31.81 invite Him into your heart. 00:27:31.85\00:27:33.05 Lord, would You take our hearts and live in them? 00:27:33.08\00:27:35.78 And as we ask You to do so, 00:27:35.82\00:27:37.12 we will know that we have the gift of eternal life. 00:27:37.15\00:27:40.29 We look forward to the end of this story, 00:27:40.32\00:27:42.32 the earthly story being told. 00:27:42.36\00:27:44.13 We look forward to eternity with You. 00:27:44.16\00:27:46.56 In Jesus' name we pray. 00:27:46.59\00:27:48.96 Amen. 00:27:49.00\00:27:51.07 Thanks so much for joining me. 00:27:51.10\00:27:52.77 I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time. 00:27:52.80\00:27:54.80 Until then, remember: 00:27:54.84\00:27:56.64 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:27:56.67\00:28:00.81 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 00:28:00.84\00:28:06.11 ¤[Theme music]¤ 00:28:06.15\00:28:16.19 ¤[Theme music]¤ 00:28:16.19\00:28:25.13
