Roosevelt: Yesterday, December 7th, 1941, 00:00:24.89\00:00:33.29 a date which will live in infamy, 00:00:33.33\00:00:39.00 the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately 00:00:39.03\00:00:43.34 attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. 00:00:43.37\00:00:50.01 >>John Bradshaw: December the 7th, 1941, 00:00:52.68\00:00:56.28 a day which then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt 00:00:56.32\00:00:59.75 predicted, correctly, would live in infamy. 00:00:59.79\00:01:04.63 On that day, 350 aircraft of the Empire of Japan attacked 00:01:04.66\00:01:09.60 the United States at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, 00:01:09.63\00:01:13.97 which was then part of the territory of Hawaii. 00:01:14.00\00:01:17.07 All eight US Navy battleships in Pearl Harbor were damaged. 00:01:19.14\00:01:23.78 Four of them were sunk, 00:01:23.81\00:01:25.21 although three were raised and returned to the war. 00:01:25.25\00:01:29.08 Still other ships were sunk; 188 US aircraft were destroyed. 00:01:29.12\00:01:34.16 And more than 2,400 Americans were killed 00:01:34.19\00:01:37.99 and almost 1,200 wounded. 00:01:38.03\00:01:40.93 But it could've been worse. 00:01:40.96\00:01:42.80 A couple of weeks after the attack, 00:01:42.83\00:01:44.60 Admiral Chester Nimitz observed that if Japan had attacked 00:01:44.63\00:01:48.54 Pearl Harbor on a weekday rather than on a Sunday, 00:01:48.57\00:01:52.64 casualties would've been as much as 10 times higher. 00:01:52.67\00:01:56.78 If the repair stations in Pearl Harbor had been hit, 00:01:56.81\00:02:00.38 then damaged US warships would've had to have been taken 00:02:00.42\00:02:03.39 back to the mainland. 00:02:03.42\00:02:05.42 And if the massive fuel reserves just five miles 00:02:05.45\00:02:09.09 out of Pearl Harbor had been taken out, 00:02:09.12\00:02:11.69 Nimitz said the war would've dragged on 00:02:11.73\00:02:13.80 for at least another year. 00:02:13.83\00:02:16.63 So as bad as the attack on Pearl Harbor was, 00:02:16.67\00:02:20.04 it could've been much worse. 00:02:20.07\00:02:22.60 ¤[Tense music]¤ 00:02:22.64\00:02:24.31 Japan's burning desire to become a great empire 00:02:24.34\00:02:27.58 drove it to try to grab control of the Pacific. 00:02:27.61\00:02:31.08 Just hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, 00:02:31.11\00:02:34.25 Japan attacked the Philippines 5,000 miles away. 00:02:34.28\00:02:38.35 But while the United States had a military presence 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.32 in the Philippines, 00:02:42.36\00:02:43.43 it wasn't enough to counter a Japanese onslaught. 00:02:43.46\00:02:46.46 US forces in the Philippines were under the command 00:02:46.49\00:02:49.00 of General Douglas MacArthur. 00:02:49.03\00:02:51.37 He'd retired from the United States military in 1937. 00:02:51.40\00:02:55.47 He became a field marshal in the Philippines army 00:02:55.50\00:02:58.51 and a military advisory to the Philippines government. 00:02:58.54\00:03:02.11 MacArthur came out of retirement to be the commander 00:03:02.14\00:03:05.45 of the United States Army forces in the Far East, 00:03:05.48\00:03:09.02 but it became very clear that not even MacArthur's experience 00:03:09.05\00:03:13.25 and military expertise, along with the combined 00:03:13.29\00:03:16.79 US-Filipino forces in the Philippines, 00:03:16.83\00:03:19.63 were any sort of match for the Japanese. 00:03:19.66\00:03:22.63 ¤[Soft music]¤ 00:03:22.66\00:03:25.63 The American and Filipino troops retreated 00:03:25.67\00:03:28.30 in the face of attack by Japan. 00:03:28.34\00:03:30.77 Eventually, 70,000 men-- 00:03:30.81\00:03:33.31 12,000 Americans and 58,000 Filipinos-- 00:03:33.34\00:03:37.48 withdrew to the Bataan Peninsula, 00:03:37.51\00:03:39.58 leaving them essentially helpless 00:03:39.61\00:03:41.45 against the Japanese onslaught. 00:03:41.48\00:03:44.02 The surrender of American forces on the Bataan Peninsula 00:03:44.05\00:03:46.79 took place in April of 1942. 00:03:46.82\00:03:50.33 The only American stronghold left in the Philippines 00:03:50.36\00:03:54.13 was Corregidor. 00:03:54.20\00:03:56.30 The Island of Corregidor at the entrance to Manila Bay 00:03:56.33\00:03:59.87 covers just two square miles. 00:03:59.90\00:04:02.84 For perspective, 00:04:02.87\00:04:04.31 Manhattan Island in New York City is 11 times larger. 00:04:04.34\00:04:09.58 Corregidor was often referred to as "the Rock" 00:04:09.61\00:04:13.62 because that's essentially what it is. 00:04:13.65\00:04:16.32 As small as it was, the Rock was the scene 00:04:16.35\00:04:19.59 of some of the most intense bombing of World War II, 00:04:19.62\00:04:23.79 most of it confined to a tiny area. 00:04:23.83\00:04:27.13 Millions of dollars had been spent fortifying Corregidor, 00:04:27.13\00:04:31.03 which had been controlled by the United States since 1898. 00:04:31.07\00:04:34.90 But the advent of air attack meant that those defenses 00:04:34.94\00:04:37.57 became obsolete. 00:04:37.61\00:04:39.31 In May of 1942, the thousands of US troops on Corregidor 00:04:39.34\00:04:43.55 couldn't hold out any longer. 00:04:43.58\00:04:45.98 Manila had proved to be indefensible. 00:04:46.01\00:04:48.42 Bataan fell. 00:04:48.45\00:04:50.12 Corregidor fell. 00:04:50.15\00:04:52.52 American POWs were taken to Manila 00:04:52.55\00:04:55.16 or sent on the catastrophic Bataan Death March. 00:04:55.19\00:04:59.53 The Philippines, as far as the United States was concerned, 00:04:59.56\00:05:03.80 was lost to Japan. 00:05:03.83\00:05:06.90 Except for one thing. 00:05:06.94\00:05:09.04 ¤[Soft music]¤ 00:05:09.07\00:05:11.04 On March the 12th, 1942, MacArthur, along with members 00:05:11.07\00:05:15.51 of his staff and family, was evacuated from the Philippines. 00:05:15.54\00:05:19.95 A B-17 transported him to Darwin 00:05:19.98\00:05:22.82 in Australia's Northern Territory. 00:05:22.85\00:05:25.15 And from there, he took a an American offensive against Japan, 00:05:53.52\00:05:57.29 the primary purpose of which is the relief of the Philippines. 00:05:57.32\00:06:01.76 I came through and I shall return." 00:06:01.79\00:06:05.63 Two thousand years ago, 00:06:06.63\00:06:08.36 as the battle for control of planet earth was raging, 00:06:08.40\00:06:12.10 Jesus left a group of His closest followers, 00:06:12.13\00:06:14.74 His best friends, deep in the heart of enemy territory, 00:06:14.77\00:06:19.01 and He said to them, 00:06:19.04\00:06:20.34 "I go to prepare a place for you. 00:06:28.35\00:06:31.85 "I shall return." 00:06:32.85\00:06:36.49 History tells us that MacArthur did return, 00:06:36.52\00:06:40.16 but not immediately, 00:06:40.20\00:06:42.26 and not before a long, costly, bloody, drawn-out struggle. 00:06:42.30\00:06:48.44 Jesus will return. 00:07:47.86\00:07:51.27 After General Douglas MacArthur was evacuated 00:07:51.30\00:07:53.97 from the Philippines in 1942, 00:07:54.00\00:07:57.01 he made a promise that was heard all around the world. 00:07:57.04\00:08:00.14 MacArthur said, "I shall return." 00:08:00.18\00:08:04.28 Two thousand years ago, standing in the shadow of the cross, 00:08:04.31\00:08:07.82 knowing that virtually everyone in Israel would've judged 00:08:07.85\00:08:10.55 His campaign a spectacular failure, 00:08:10.59\00:08:13.92 Jesus said virtually the same thing. 00:08:13.96\00:08:16.83 He said, "I will come again." 00:08:16.86\00:08:20.43 The Bible speaks about the Second Coming of Jesus 00:08:21.30\00:08:23.90 again and again. 00:08:23.93\00:08:25.47 The Apostle Paul referred to the return of Jesus 00:08:25.50\00:08:27.97 to the world as the "blessed hope." 00:08:28.00\00:08:31.01 But the New Testament isn't alone in forecasting 00:08:31.04\00:08:34.08 the greatest event since the creation of the world. 00:08:34.11\00:08:37.35 Even the book of Job, 00:08:37.38\00:08:38.71 considered to be the first book of the Bible written, 00:08:38.75\00:08:42.02 speaks about Jesus' return to the earth. 00:08:42.05\00:08:45.32 Job 19:25-26-- 00:08:45.35\00:08:48.49 "For I know that my Redeemer lives, 00:08:48.52\00:08:51.06 and He shall stand at last on the earth; 00:08:51.09\00:08:54.20 and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, 00:08:54.23\00:08:57.50 that in my flesh I shall see God." 00:08:57.53\00:09:01.94 He's referring directly to the hope of the Resurrection, 00:09:01.97\00:09:04.81 which takes place after Jesus returns to the world. 00:09:04.84\00:09:09.98 Virtually all of Matthew chapter 24, 00:09:10.01\00:09:12.75 which was spoken by Jesus, deals with the Second Coming of Jesus, 00:09:12.78\00:09:18.05 with Jesus saying in verse 36, 00:09:18.09\00:09:20.76 "But of that day and hour no one knows, 00:09:20.79\00:09:23.56 not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only." 00:09:23.59\00:09:27.30 Which raises an important point. 00:09:27.30\00:09:30.00 Jesus went out of His way to tell us that while we can know 00:09:30.03\00:09:33.64 when His coming is near, 00:09:33.67\00:09:35.90 there's no one who can accurately forecast 00:09:35.94\00:09:38.51 the day of Jesus' return. 00:09:38.54\00:09:40.78 People who say, 00:09:40.81\00:09:41.91 "Jesus is coming back on this day or on that day"... 00:09:41.94\00:09:45.15 No. The Bible says we cannot know. 00:09:45.18\00:09:48.58 We don't know, and we won't know. 00:09:48.62\00:09:52.79 And while Jesus waits, planet earth descends ever deeper 00:09:52.82\00:09:56.76 into secularism and post-modernism and atheism, 00:09:56.79\00:10:02.30 God allowing us to see that our -isms are not the way forward. 00:10:12.44\00:10:15.44 here at Corregidor in Manila Bay in the Philippines. 00:10:15.48\00:10:19.85 It was held by the United States between 1898 and 1942, 00:10:19.88\00:10:24.95 and was taken by Japan as part of Japan's quest 00:10:24.99\00:10:27.66 to take the Pacific. 00:10:27.69\00:10:29.62 It was a desperate struggle. 00:10:29.66\00:10:32.19 The Philippines suffered immensely 00:10:33.53\00:10:35.90 under Japanese occupation. 00:10:35.93\00:10:37.93 Thousands of servicemen, Filipino and American, 00:10:37.97\00:10:40.97 were killed. 00:10:41.00\00:10:42.40 Servicemen suffered from diseases 00:10:42.44\00:10:43.91 like beriberi and scurvy. 00:10:43.94\00:10:45.97 Hundreds of thousands of civilians perished. 00:10:46.01\00:10:48.98 Manila was destroyed. 00:10:49.01\00:10:50.98 MacArthur's biographer wrote that only Warsaw suffered more 00:10:51.01\00:10:54.82 among Allied cities in World War II. 00:10:54.85\00:10:57.69 Seventy-five percent of Manila's factories were destroyed, 00:10:57.72\00:11:01.32 80 percent of the southern residential district, 00:11:01.36\00:11:03.99 100 percent of the business district. 00:11:04.03\00:11:07.03 And after American troops retreated 00:11:07.03\00:11:08.53 to the Bataan Peninsula, 00:11:08.56\00:11:09.86 they were marched to what's known today as Camp O'Donnell 00:11:09.90\00:11:13.40 on what's now referred to as the Bataan Death March. 00:11:13.44\00:11:18.14 Thousands of men died. 00:11:18.17\00:11:20.34 The cruelty they experienced is almost impossible to believe. 00:11:20.38\00:11:24.08 But there was something that gave them hope: 00:11:24.11\00:11:27.22 General MacArthur had made them a promise, 00:11:27.25\00:11:29.98 and the people here in the Philippines, 00:11:30.02\00:11:31.82 the POWs, the Filipinos who wanted their country back, 00:11:31.85\00:11:35.86 American POWs who'd been taken from here to Japan 00:11:35.89\00:11:39.59 to toil as slaves-- 00:11:39.63\00:11:42.06 they didn't think that MacArthur was one to break his promise. 00:11:42.10\00:11:45.47 He said he'd return, and they hung on to those words. 00:11:45.50\00:11:49.30 He would return. 00:11:49.34\00:11:52.17 On October the 20th, 1944, MacArthur returned 00:11:53.34\00:11:56.88 to the Philippines, coming ashore on the island of Leyte, 00:11:56.91\00:12:00.32 350 miles away. 00:12:00.35\00:12:02.82 And that's when things really started to heat up 00:12:02.85\00:12:05.55 on Corregidor. 00:12:05.59\00:12:07.59 You look at Corregidor today, 00:12:10.33\00:12:11.79 and you know that the fighting here was intense. 00:12:11.83\00:12:15.96 One of the main landmarks on the island is what was known 00:12:16.00\00:12:18.10 as the Mile-Long Barracks. 00:12:18.13\00:12:20.27 In reality, they were 1,500 feet long, 00:12:20.30\00:12:23.34 not quite a third of a mile. 00:12:23.37\00:12:25.14 But a good name goes a long way in the service. 00:12:25.17\00:12:28.88 Looking at the ruins here, 00:12:28.91\00:12:29.88 you can only imagine how fierce the fighting was. 00:12:29.91\00:12:35.02 Corregidor was an ideal sort of a place once upon a time. 00:12:35.05\00:12:38.29 There used to be the island headquarters, 00:12:38.32\00:12:40.19 a theater, a nine-hole golf course, a parade ground. 00:12:40.22\00:12:45.09 The vast majority of what's here today 00:12:45.13\00:12:47.00 testifies to the destruction of war. 00:12:47.03\00:12:50.27 And as bad as it was that the buildings were destroyed, 00:12:50.30\00:12:53.57 the loss of life is what really mattered. 00:12:53.60\00:12:57.61 In the 1920s, US Army engineers had carved out 00:12:57.64\00:13:01.84 a labyrinth of tunnels on Corregidor. 00:13:01.88\00:13:05.18 The Malinta Tunnels were a maze of tunnels that burrowed 00:13:05.21\00:13:08.52 as far as 1,450 feet back into the hillside. 00:13:08.55\00:13:13.36 There was a main tunnel and then a network of tunnels 00:13:13.39\00:13:16.73 that spread out from the main tunnel. 00:13:16.76\00:13:19.23 The tunnels were originally designed for storing supplies, 00:13:19.26\00:13:22.90 ammunition, and equipment. 00:13:22.93\00:13:25.07 They were a bomb-proof bunker. 00:13:25.10\00:13:27.37 MacArthur and the Philippines president, Quezon, 00:13:27.40\00:13:30.21 lived here in 1942. 00:13:30.24\00:13:33.21 But as the war overtook Corregidor, 00:13:33.24\00:13:35.21 the Malinta Tunnels became a defensive fortification 00:13:35.24\00:13:39.28 and the home of a 1,000-bed hospital. 00:13:39.31\00:13:42.55 One general remembers these tunnels being a scene 00:13:42.58\00:13:45.49 of unbelievable disorder, congestion, and confusion. 00:13:45.52\00:13:50.36 ¤[Tense music]¤ 00:13:52.36\00:13:54.10 On May the 2nd, 1942, the Japanese bombing 00:13:54.13\00:13:58.40 was so intense that in one 5-hour period, 00:13:58.43\00:14:01.50 3,600 240-millimeter shells blasted the islands, 00:14:01.54\00:14:07.21 mainly in just two locations. 00:14:07.24\00:14:09.21 That's more than 720 an hour, 00:14:09.24\00:14:11.28 more than one every five seconds. 00:14:11.31\00:14:14.68 One day in May, more than 16,000 shells hit Corregidor. 00:14:14.72\00:14:20.06 An American general recalled that "life on Corregidor 00:14:20.09\00:14:23.12 could be compared to sitting in the middle of a bull's-eye 00:14:23.16\00:14:25.79 during rapid-fire target practice." 00:14:25.83\00:14:28.20 But still, men hoped. 00:14:28.23\00:14:30.10 MacArthur said he'd return. 00:14:30.13\00:14:32.67 What other hope did they have? really. 00:19:07.98\00:19:11.81 Although trees and vegetation have pretty much swallowed up 00:19:11.85\00:19:15.35 this island over the years, 00:19:15.38\00:19:17.35 graphic reminders of the war on 00:19:33.90\00:19:38.54 And beneath the memorial's dome is a circular altar, 00:19:38.57\00:19:43.14 upon which are inscribed the words, 00:19:43.18\00:19:45.68 "Sleep, my sons, your duty done ...for clear reveille of God." 00:19:57.23\00:20:04.27 Which is the thought expressed by the Apostle Paul 00:20:04.30\00:20:07.94 in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4: 00:20:07.97\00:20:12.64 "For the Lord Himself 00:20:57.45\00:21:02.12 Atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki 00:21:02.16\00:21:05.26 on August the 6th and August 9th. 00:21:05.29\00:21:08.40 Japan's emperor, Hirohito, surrendered on August 15, 00:21:08.43\00:21:12.27 and the instrument of surrender was signed on board 00:21:12.30\00:21:14.90 the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September the 2nd. 00:21:14.94\00:21:19.77 When Jesus comes back to the earth, 00:21:19.81\00:21:22.31 there'll be no more war. 00:21:22.34\00:21:24.91 In fact, Revelation 21:4 says, 00:21:24.95\00:21:28.05 "And God shall wipe away all tears from their 00:21:54.34\00:21:57.11 for those who've surrendered their hearts to Him, 00:21:57.15\00:22:00.52 for those who've chosen to believe that God is love, 00:22:00.55\00:22:04.92 well, the prophet Isaiah puts it this way in Isaiah 25:9-- 00:22:04.95\00:22:09.36 "And it shall be said in that day, 00:22:09.39\00:22:11.86 'Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, 00:22:11.89\00:22:16.00 and He will every war, there's a defeated side. 00:22:25.27\00:22:28.71 Revelation 6:14-17 looks at it from the opposite point of view. 00:22:28.74\00:22:34.08 "And the heaven departed as a scroll 00:22:34.12\00:22:36.28 when it is rolled together; 00:22:36.32\00:22:37.85 and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 00:22:37.89\00:22:41.32 And the kings of the earth, and the 00:22:49.86\00:22:51.67 hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 00:22:51.70\00:22:55.57 and said to the mountains and rocks, 00:22:55.60\00:22:58.01 'Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him 00:22:58.04\00:23:01.14 that sitteth on the throne, 00:23:01.18\00:23:02.74 and from the wrath of the Lamb: 00:23:02.78\00:23:04.81 for the great day of His wrath is come; in Matthew chapter 24, there's an emphasis 00:23:17.99\00:23:20.93 on responding to the signs of the times and being ready 00:23:20.96\00:23:25.37 for the return of Jesus. 00:23:25.40\00:23:27.30 Jesus said, "Watch therefore, 00:23:27.34\00:23:30.47 for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming." 00:23:30.51\00:23:34.31 Two verses later: "Therefore you also be ready, 00:23:34.34\00:23:38.48 for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." 00:23:38.51\00:23:42.68 Other than the sound of the surf, 00:23:44.69\00:23:47.59 the beaches of Corregidor are quiet now. 00:23:47.62\00:23:51.29 No more American soldiers waiting here to welcome 00:23:51.33\00:23:54.50 the barges bringing Japanese soldiers ashore. 00:23:54.56\00:23:57.97 The sounds of artillery are no longer heard. 00:23:58.00\00:24:00.80 Corregidor is a peaceful place. 00:24:00.84\00:24:04.37 One day soon, the battle raging here on planet earth 00:24:04.41\00:24:07.04 is going to come to an end. 00:24:07.08\00:24:08.91 What, then, for you? 00:24:08.94\00:24:11.61 You know, there's no reason that you should be lost. 00:24:11.65\00:24:14.02 There's no reason anybody should be
