Roosevelt: Yesterday, December 7th, 1941, 00:00:24.49\00:00:32.89 a date which will live in infamy, 00:00:32.93\00:00:38.60 the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately 00:00:38.63\00:00:42.94 attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. 00:00:42.97\00:00:49.61 >>John Bradshaw: December the 7th, 1941, 00:00:52.28\00:00:55.88 a day which then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt 00:00:55.92\00:00:59.35 predicted, correctly, would live in infamy. 00:00:59.39\00:01:04.23 On that day, 350 aircraft of the Empire of Japan attacked 00:01:04.26\00:01:09.20 the United States at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, 00:01:09.23\00:01:13.57 which was then part of the territory of Hawaii. 00:01:13.60\00:01:16.67 All eight US Navy battleships in Pearl Harbor were damaged. 00:01:18.74\00:01:23.38 Four of them were sunk, 00:01:23.41\00:01:24.81 although three were raised and returned to the war. 00:01:24.85\00:01:28.68 Still other ships were sunk; 188 US aircraft were destroyed. 00:01:28.72\00:01:33.76 And more than 2,400 Americans were killed 00:01:33.79\00:01:37.59 and almost 1,200 wounded. 00:01:37.63\00:01:40.53 But it could've been worse. 00:01:40.56\00:01:42.40 A couple of weeks after the attack, 00:01:42.43\00:01:44.20 Admiral Chester Nimitz observed that if Japan had attacked 00:01:44.23\00:01:48.14 Pearl Harbor on a weekday rather than on a Sunday, 00:01:48.17\00:01:52.24 casualties would've been as much as 10 times higher. 00:01:52.27\00:01:56.38 If the repair stations in Pearl Harbor had been hit, 00:01:56.41\00:01:59.91 then damaged US warships would've had to have been taken 00:01:59.95\00:02:02.98 back to the mainland. 00:02:03.02\00:02:05.02 And if the massive fuel reserves just five miles 00:02:05.05\00:02:08.69 out of Pearl Harbor had been taken out, 00:02:08.72\00:02:11.29 Nimitz said the war would've dragged on 00:02:11.33\00:02:13.40 for at least another year. 00:02:13.43\00:02:16.23 So as bad as the attack on Pearl Harbor was, 00:02:16.26\00:02:19.63 it could've been much worse. 00:02:19.67\00:02:22.20 ¤[Tense music]¤ 00:02:22.24\00:02:23.91 Japan's burning desire to become a great empire 00:02:23.94\00:02:27.18 drove it to try to grab control of the Pacific. 00:02:27.21\00:02:30.68 Just hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, 00:02:30.71\00:02:33.85 Japan attacked the Philippines 5,000 miles away. 00:02:33.88\00:02:37.95 But while the United States had a military presence 00:02:39.45\00:02:41.92 in the Philippines, 00:02:41.96\00:02:43.02 it wasn't enough to counter a Japanese onslaught. 00:02:43.06\00:02:46.06 US forces in the Philippines were under the command 00:02:46.09\00:02:48.60 of General Douglas MacArthur. 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.97 He'd retired from the United States military in 1937. 00:02:51.00\00:02:55.07 He became a field marshal in the Philippines army 00:02:55.10\00:02:58.11 and a military advisory to the Philippines government. 00:02:58.14\00:03:01.71 MacArthur came out of retirement to be the commander 00:03:01.74\00:03:05.05 of the United States Army forces in the Far East, 00:03:05.08\00:03:08.62 but it became very clear that not even MacArthur's experience 00:03:08.65\00:03:12.85 and military expertise, along with the combined 00:03:12.89\00:03:16.39 US-Filipino forces in the Philippines, 00:03:16.42\00:03:19.23 were any sort of match for the Japanese. 00:03:19.26\00:03:22.23 ¤[Soft music]¤ 00:03:22.26\00:03:25.23 The American and Filipino troops retreated 00:03:25.27\00:03:27.90 in the face of attack by Japan. 00:03:27.94\00:03:30.37 Eventually, 70,000 men-- 00:03:30.41\00:03:32.91 12,000 Americans and 58,000 Filipinos-- 00:03:32.94\00:03:37.08 withdrew to the Bataan Peninsula, 00:03:37.11\00:03:39.18 leaving them essentially helpless 00:03:39.21\00:03:41.05 against the Japanese onslaught. 00:03:41.08\00:03:43.62 The surrender of American forces on the Bataan Peninsula 00:03:43.65\00:03:46.39 took place in April of 1942. 00:03:46.42\00:03:49.92 The only American stronghold left in the Philippines 00:03:49.96\00:03:53.76 was Corregidor. 00:03:53.80\00:03:55.90 The Island of Corregidor at the entrance to Manila Bay 00:03:55.93\00:03:59.47 covers just two square miles. 00:03:59.50\00:04:02.44 For perspective, 00:04:02.47\00:04:03.91 Manhattan Island in New York City is 11 times larger. 00:04:03.94\00:04:09.18 Corregidor was often referred to as "the Rock" 00:04:09.21\00:04:13.21 because that's essentially what it is. 00:04:13.25\00:04:15.92 As small as it was, the Rock was the scene 00:04:15.95\00:04:19.19 of some of the most intense bombing of World War II, 00:04:19.22\00:04:23.39 most of it confined to a tiny area. 00:04:23.43\00:04:26.73 Millions of dollars had been spent fortifying Corregidor, 00:04:26.76\00:04:30.63 which had been controlled by the United States since 1898. 00:04:30.67\00:04:34.50 But the advent of air attack meant that those defenses 00:04:34.54\00:04:37.17 became obsolete. 00:04:37.21\00:04:38.91 In May of 1942, the thousands of US troops on Corregidor 00:04:38.94\00:04:43.14 couldn't hold out any longer. 00:04:43.18\00:04:45.58 Manila had proved to be indefensible. 00:04:45.61\00:04:48.02 Bataan fell. 00:04:48.05\00:04:49.72 Corregidor fell. 00:04:49.75\00:04:52.12 American POWs were taken to Manila 00:04:52.15\00:04:54.76 or sent on the catastrophic Bataan Death March. 00:04:54.79\00:04:59.13 The Philippines, as far as the United States was concerned, 00:04:59.16\00:05:03.40 was lost to Japan. 00:05:03.43\00:05:06.50 Except for one thing. 00:05:06.53\00:05:08.64 ¤[Soft music]¤ 00:05:08.67\00:05:10.64 On March the 12th, 1942, MacArthur, along with members 00:05:10.67\00:05:15.11 of his staff and family, was an American offensive against Japan, 00:05:53.11\00:05:56.89 the primary purpose of which is the relief of the Philippines. 00:05:56.92\00:06:01.36 I came through and I shall return." 00:06:01.39\00:06:05.23 Two thousand years ago, 00:06:06.23\00:06:07.96 as the battle for control of planet earth was raging, 00:06:08.00\00:06:11.70 Jesus left a group of His closest followers, 00:07:47.46\00:07:50.87 After General Douglas MacArthur was evacuated 00:07:50.90\00:07:53.57 from the Philippines in 1942, 00:07:53.60\00:07:56.60 he made a promise that was heard all around the world. 00:07:56.64\00:07:59.67 MacArthur said, "I shall return." 00:07:59.71\00:08:03.88 Two thousand years ago, standing in the shadow of the cross, 00:08:03.91\00:08:07.42 knowing that virtually everyone in Israel would've judged 00:08:07.45\00:08:10.15 His campaign a spectacular failure, 00:08:10.19\00:08:13.52 Jesus said virtually the same thing. 00:08:13.56\00:08:16.42 He said, "I will come again." 00:08:16.46\00:08:20.03 The Bible speaks about the Second Coming of Jesus 00:08:20.93\00:08:23.50 again and again. 00:08:23.53\00:08:25.07 The Apostle Paul referred to the return of Jesus 00:08:25.10\00:08:27.57 to the world as the "blessed hope." 00:08:27.60\00:08:30.61 But the New Testament isn't alone in forecasting 00:08:30.64\00:08:33.68 the greatest event since the creation of the world. 00:08:33.71\00:08:36.95 Even the book of Job, 00:08:36.98\00:08:38.31 considered to be the first book of the Bible written, 00:08:38.35\00:08:41.62 speaks about Jesus' return to the earth. 00:08:41.65\00:08:44.92 Job 19:25-26-- 00:08:44.95\00:08:48.09 "For I know that my Redeemer lives, 00:08:48.12\00:08:50.66 and He shall stand at last on the earth; 00:08:50.69\00:08:53.83 and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, 00:08:53.86\00:08:57.10 that in my flesh I shall see God." 00:08:57.13\00:09:01.54 He's referring directly to the hope of the Resurrection, 00:09:01.57\00:09:04.41 which takes place after Jesus returns to the world. 00:09:04.44\00:09:09.58 Virtually all of Matthew chapter 24, 00:09:09.61\00:09:12.35 which was spoken by Jesus, deals with the Second Coming of Jesus, 00:09:12.38\00:09:17.65 with Jesus saying in verse 36, 00:09:17.69\00:09:20.36 "But of that day and hour no one knows, 00:09:20.39\00:09:23.16 not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only." 00:09:23.19\00:09:26.90 Which raises an important point. 00:09:26.93\00:09:29.60 Jesus went out of His way to tell us that while we can know 00:09:29.63\00:09:33.23 when His coming is near, 00:09:33.27\00:09:35.50 there's no one who can accurately forecast 00:09:35.54\00:09:38.11 the day of Jesus' return. 00:09:38.14\00:09:40.38 People who say, 00:09:40.41\00:09:41.51 "Jesus is coming back on this day or on that day"... 00:09:41.54\00:09:44.75 No. The Bible says we cannot know. 00:09:44.78\00:09:48.18 We don't know, and we won't know. 00:09:48.22\00:09:52.39 And while Jesus waits, planet earth descends ever deeper 00:09:52.42\00:09:56.36 into secularism and post-modernism and atheism, 00:09:56.39\00:10:01.90 God allowing us to see that our -isms are not the way forward. 00:10:12.04\00:10:15.04 here at Corregidor in Manila Bay in the Philippines. 00:10:15.08\00:10:19.45 It was held by the United States between 1898 and 1942, 00:10:19.48\00:10:24.55 and was taken by Japan as part of Japan's quest 00:10:24.59\00:10:27.26 to take the Pacific. 00:10:27.29\00:10:29.22 It was a desperate struggle. 00:10:29.26\00:10:31.79 The Philippines suffered immensely 00:10:33.13\00:10:35.50 under Japanese occupation. 00:10:35.53\00:10:37.53 Thousands of servicemen, Filipino and American, 00:10:37.57\00:10:40.57 were killed. 00:10:40.60\00:10:42.00 Servicemen suffered from diseases 00:10:42.04\00:10:43.51 like beriberi and scurvy. 00:10:43.54\00:10:45.57 Hundreds of thousands of civilians perished. 00:10:45.61\00:10:48.58 Manila was destroyed. 00:10:48.61\00:10:50.58 MacArthur's biographer wrote that only Warsaw suffered more 00:10:50.61\00:10:54.42 among Allied cities in World War II. 00:10:54.45\00:10:57.29 Seventy-five percent of Manila's factories were destroyed, 00:10:57.32\00:11:00.92 80 percent of the southern residential district, 00:11:00.96\00:11:03.59 100 percent of the business district. 00:11:03.63\00:11:06.63 And after American troops retreated 00:11:06.66\00:11:08.13 to the Bataan Peninsula, 00:11:08.16\00:11:09.46 they were marched to what's known today as Camp O'Donnell 00:11:09.50\00:11:13.00 on what's now referred to as the Bataan Death March. 00:11:13.03\00:11:17.74 Thousands of men died. 00:11:17.77\00:11:19.94 The cruelty they experienced is almost impossible to believe. 00:11:19.97\00:11:23.68 But there was something that gave them hope: 00:11:23.71\00:11:26.82 General MacArthur had made them a promise, 00:11:26.85\00:11:29.58 and the people here in the Philippines, 00:11:29.62\00:11:31.42 the POWs, the Filipinos who wanted their country back, 00:11:31.45\00:11:35.46 American POWs who'd been taken from here to Japan 00:11:35.49\00:11:39.19 to toil as slaves-- 00:11:39.23\00:11:41.66 they didn't think that MacArthur was one to break his promise. 00:11:41.70\00:11:45.07 He said he'd return, and they hung on to those words. 00:11:45.10\00:11:48.90 He would return. 00:11:48.94\00:11:51.77 On October the 20th, 1944, MacArthur returned 00:11:52.94\00:11:56.48 to the Philippines, coming ashore on the island of Leyte, 00:11:56.51\00:11:59.85 350 miles away. 00:11:59.88\00:12:02.42 And that's when things really started to heat up 00:12:02.45\00:12:05.15 on Corregidor. 00:12:05.19\00:12:07.19 You look at Corregidor today, 00:12:09.92\00:12:11.39 and you know that the fighting here was intense. 00:12:11.43\00:12:15.56 One of the main landmarks on the island is what was known 00:12:15.60\00:12:17.70 as the Mile-Long Barracks. 00:12:17.73\00:12:19.87 In reality, they were 1,500 feet long, 00:12:19.90\00:12:22.94 not quite a third of a mile. 00:12:22.97\00:12:24.74 But a good name goes a long way in the service. 00:12:24.77\00:12:28.48 Looking at the ruins here, 00:12:28.51\00:12:29.48 you can only imagine how fierce the fighting was. 00:12:29.51\00:12:34.62 Corregidor was an ideal sort of a place once upon a time. 00:12:34.65\00:12:37.89 There used to be the island headquarters, 00:12:37.92\00:12:39.79 a theater, a nine-hole golf course, a parade ground. 00:12:39.82\00:12:44.69 The vast majority of what's here today 00:12:44.73\00:12:46.59 testifies to the destruction of war. 00:12:46.63\00:12:49.86 And as bad as it was that the buildings were destroyed, 00:12:49.90\00:12:53.17 the loss of life is what really mattered. 00:12:53.20\00:12:57.21 In the 1920s, US Army engineers had carved out 00:12:57.24\00:13:01.44 a labyrinth of tunnels on Corregidor. 00:13:01.48\00:13:04.78 The Malinta Tunnels were a maze of tunnels that burrowed 00:13:04.81\00:13:08.12 as far as 1,450 feet back into the hillside. 00:13:08.15\00:13:12.95 There was a main tunnel and then a network of tunnels 00:13:12.99\00:13:16.32 that spread out from the main tunnel. 00:13:16.36\00:13:18.83 The tunnels were originally designed for storing supplies, 00:13:18.86\00:13:22.50 ammunition, and equipment. 00:13:22.53\00:13:24.67 They were a bomb-proof bunker. 00:13:24.70\00:13:26.97 MacArthur and the Philippines president, Quezon, 00:13:27.00\00:13:29.80 lived here in 1942. 00:13:29.84\00:13:32.81 But as the war overtook Corregidor, 00:13:32.84\00:13:34.81 the Malinta Tunnels became a defensive fortification 00:13:34.84\00:13:38.88 and the home of a 1,000-bed hospital. 00:13:38.91\00:13:42.15 One general remembers these tunnels being a scene 00:13:42.18\00:13:45.09 of unbelievable disorder, congestion, and confusion. 00:13:45.12\00:13:49.96 ¤[Tense music]¤ 00:13:51.96\00:13:53.73 On May the 2nd, 1942, the Japanese bombing 00:13:53.76\00:13:58.00 was so intense that in one 5-hour period, 00:13:58.03\00:14:01.10 3,600 240-millimeter shells blasted the islands, 00:14:01.14\00:14:06.81 mainly in just two locations. 00:14:06.84\00:14:08.81 That's more than 720 an hour, 00:14:08.84\00:14:10.88 more than one every five seconds. 00:14:10.91\00:14:14.28 One day in May, more than 16,000 shells hit Corregidor. 00:14:14.32\00:14:19.65 An American general recalled that "life on Corregidor 00:14:19.69\00:14:22.72 could be compared to sitting in the middle of a bull's-eye 00:14:22.76\00:14:25.39 during rapid-fire target practice." 00:14:25.43\00:14:27.83 But still, men hoped. 00:14:27.86\00:14:29.70 MacArthur said he'd return. 00:14:29.73\00:14:32.27 What other hope did they have? really. 00:19:07.58\00:19:11.41 Although trees and vegetation have pretty much swallowed up 00:19:11.45\00:19:14.95 this island over the years, 00:19:14.98\00:19:16.95 graphic reminders of the war on 00:19:33.50\00:19:38.14 And beneath the memorial's dome is a circular altar, 00:19:38.17\00:19:42.74 upon which are inscribed the words, 00:19:42.78\00:19:45.28 "Sleep, my sons, your duty done ...for clear reveille of God." 00:19:56.83\00:20:03.87 Which is the thought expressed by the Apostle Paul 00:20:03.90\00:20:07.54 in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4: 00:20:07.57\00:20:12.24 "For the Lord Himself 00:20:57.05\00:21:01.72 Atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki 00:21:01.76\00:21:04.86 on August the 6th and August 9th. 00:21:04.89\00:21:08.00 Japan's emperor, Hirohito, surrendered on August 15, 00:21:08.03\00:21:11.87 and the instrument of surrender was signed on board 00:21:11.90\00:21:14.50 the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September the 2nd. 00:21:14.54\00:21:19.37 When Jesus comes back to the earth, 00:21:19.41\00:21:21.91 there'll be no more war. 00:21:21.94\00:21:24.51 In fact, Revelation 21:4 says, 00:21:24.55\00:21:27.65 "And God shall wipe away all tears from their 00:21:36.93\00:21:39.76 for the former things are passed away." 00:21:39.79\00:21:43.26 The return of Jesus to this earth is going to be 00:21:43.30\00:21:45.53 the greatest event in all of human history. 00:21:45.57\00:21:48.90 Unless, of course, it isn't. 00:21:48.94\00:21:52.41 You get to decide. 00:21:52.44\00:21:53.91 For those who've chosen Jesus as their Lord and Savior, 00:21:53.94\00:21:56.71 for those who've surrendered their hearts to Him, 00:21:56.75\00:22:00.12 for those who've chosen to believe that God is love, 00:22:00.15\00:22:04.52 well, the prophet Isaiah puts it this way in Isaiah 25:9-- 00:22:04.55\00:22:08.96 "And it shall be said in that day, 00:22:08.99\00:22:11.46 'Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, 00:22:11.49\00:22:15.60 and He will every war, there's a defeated side. 00:22:24.87\00:22:28.31 Revelation 6:14-17 looks at it from the opposite point of view. 00:22:28.34\00:22:33.68 "And the heaven departed as a scroll 00:22:33.72\00:22:35.88 when it is rolled together; 00:22:35.92\00:22:37.45 and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 00:22:37.49\00:22:40.92 And the kings of the earth, and the 00:22:49.46\00:22:51.27 hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 00:22:51.30\00:22:55.17 and said to the mountains and rocks, 00:22:55.20\00:22:57.61 'Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him 00:22:57.64\00:23:00.74 that sitteth on the throne, 00:23:00.78\00:23:02.34 and from the wrath of the Lamb: 00:23:02.38\00:23:04.41 for the great day of His wrath is come; in Matthew chapter 24, there's an emphasis 00:23:17.59\00:23:20.53 on responding to the signs of the times and being ready 00:23:20.56\00:23:24.97 for the return of Jesus. 00:23:25.00\00:23:26.90 Jesus said, "Watch therefore, 00:23:26.94\00:23:30.07 for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming." 00:23:30.11\00:23:33.91 Two verses later: "Therefore you also be ready, 00:23:33.94\00:23:38.08 for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." 00:23:38.11\00:23:42.28 Other than the sound of the surf, 00:23:44.29\00:23:47.19 the beaches of Corregidor are quiet now. 00:23:47.22\00:23:50.89 No more American soldiers waiting here to welcome 00:23:50.93\00:23:54.10 the barges bringing Japanese soldiers ashore. 00:23:54.13\00:23:57.57 The sounds of artillery are no longer heard. 00:23:57.60\00:24:00.40 Corregidor is a peaceful place. 00:24:00.44\00:24:03.97 One day soon, the battle raging here on planet earth 00:24:04.01\00:24:06.64 is going to come to an end. 00:24:06.68\00:24:08.51 What, then, for you? 00:24:08.54\00:24:11.21 You know, there's no reason that you should be lost. 00:24:11.25\00:24:13.62 There's no reason anybody should be
