>>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me today. 00:00:19.51\00:00:20.82 This is It Is Written. I'm John Bradshaw. 00:00:20.85\00:00:24.62 If you were to rate some of the most curious texts in the Bible, 00:00:24.65\00:00:29.22 if you were to make a list of odd or challenging 00:00:29.26\00:00:31.99 or head-scratching texts, 00:00:32.03\00:00:34.63 this verse would likely be at the top of many lists. 00:00:34.66\00:00:38.60 It's because the Bible says a lot about money. 00:00:38.63\00:00:42.30 A lot. 00:00:42.34\00:00:43.54 And yet, writing to the young church leader Timothy, 00:00:43.57\00:00:47.01 Paul said in 1 Timothy chapter 6 and verse 10, 00:00:47.04\00:00:50.35 "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, 00:00:50.38\00:00:56.58 for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, 00:00:56.62\00:01:00.32 and [have] pierced themselves through with many sorrows." 00:01:00.36\00:01:03.83 Now, we pray for money. We talk about money. 00:01:03.86\00:01:06.49 We thank God for money. 00:01:06.53\00:01:07.66 We consider money to be a great blessing, 00:01:07.66\00:01:09.76 but here is a great warning concerning something 00:01:09.80\00:01:14.04 that we all need. 00:01:14.07\00:01:16.07 My guest today is international speaker and author, 00:01:16.10\00:01:18.87 Australian Julian Archer. 00:01:18.91\00:01:20.64 Julian, welcome to It Is Written. 00:01:20.68\00:01:22.48 >>Julian Archer: Thank you, John. 00:01:22.51\00:01:23.81 >>John: What do you make of this verse? 00:01:23.85\00:01:25.01 In some Bibles, it's written in even more plain language. 00:01:25.05\00:01:28.78 "The love of money," as one Bible says, 00:01:28.82\00:01:31.49 "is the root of all evil." 00:01:31.52\00:01:33.32 What do you think Paul was getting at there? 00:01:33.36\00:01:34.92 Why did he say that to Timothy? 00:01:34.96\00:01:36.73 >>Julian: Yeah, I think the, the, the facts of what Paul 00:01:36.76\00:01:41.76 is saying is that if you trace any evil back to its roots, 00:01:41.80\00:01:46.23 there's usually someone trying to make a dollar out of it. 00:01:46.27\00:01:48.07 >>John: Follow the money, right? 00:01:48.10\00:01:49.14 That's a phrase we use all the time. 00:01:49.17\00:01:50.41 >>Julian: Follow the money. Follow it back. 00:01:50.44\00:01:52.07 >>John: I was, I was in a, in another country 00:01:52.11\00:01:53.68 just a few days ago asking about a certain thing 00:01:53.71\00:01:55.94 that was taking place in their country. 00:01:55.98\00:01:57.28 The person smiled, and in answer to my question simply said, 00:01:57.31\00:02:00.28 "Follow the money." 00:02:00.32\00:02:01.68 Ah, so that's why. 00:02:01.72\00:02:03.72 That's right; 00:02:03.75\00:02:04.85 there's often a financial motive behind what's going on. 00:02:04.89\00:02:06.62 >>Julian: Mm, absolutely, yeah, and, look, in my personal life, 00:02:06.65\00:02:10.13 I have also seen the second half of the text come true 00:02:10.16\00:02:12.53 where it says that many "have strayed from the faith" 00:02:12.56\00:02:16.10 because of this love of money, this greediness, as well, 00:02:16.13\00:02:18.60 and "pierced themselves through with many sorrows." 00:02:18.63\00:02:20.54 >>John: In the past you've been very successful in business. 00:02:20.57\00:02:22.80 >>Julian: Yeah, we've been really blessed 00:02:22.84\00:02:24.41 in some businesses that we've run in Australia. 00:02:24.44\00:02:26.81 >>John: But...that silver lining 00:02:26.84\00:02:31.51 carried with it a pretty dark cloud. 00:02:31.55\00:02:32.95 How did that manifest itself in your experience? 00:02:32.98\00:02:35.42 >>Julian: Yeah, they, the blessings poured in. 00:02:35.45\00:02:38.49 The windows of heaven were opened up, 00:02:38.52\00:02:40.59 and more than we could receive, you know--very biblical. 00:02:40.62\00:02:44.16 But I then began to worship the blessings. 00:02:44.19\00:02:47.13 I began to worship the gifts instead of the Giver 00:02:47.13\00:02:49.53 of the gifts, and that's where I messed up, 00:02:49.56\00:02:52.07 and so those blessings actually became a curse in my life. 00:02:52.10\00:02:54.87 >>John: So tell me how you did that? 00:02:54.90\00:02:56.27 How did, how did-- give me just an example. 00:02:56.30\00:02:58.21 Don't give away too much. 00:02:58.24\00:02:59.47 Give me an example of how, how someone looking on, or how you, 00:02:59.51\00:03:03.35 from your vantage point, said, 00:03:03.38\00:03:05.45 "This is me. I'm worshiping the gifts rather than the Giver." 00:03:05.48\00:03:07.88 >>Julian: Yeah, I think, from someone looking on, 00:03:07.92\00:03:09.68 they probably wouldn't have seen it. 00:03:09.72\00:03:10.82 We're, we're pretty good at wearing masks. 00:03:10.85\00:03:12.55 And, uh, however, for me, I saw that as the blessings 00:03:12.59\00:03:17.73 started coming in and grew and grew and grew, 00:03:17.76\00:03:20.50 that they were taking my time and my attention. 00:03:20.53\00:03:22.83 If you had looked at my calendar and my bank statements, 00:03:22.86\00:03:28.77 you would have seen more and more of my time and energy 00:03:28.80\00:03:31.74 and focus being on my stuff than on God, 00:03:31.77\00:03:35.71 and that was subtle, very subtle. 00:03:35.74\00:03:37.61 It just came over time. 00:03:37.65\00:03:38.65 But in my heart, I could see it happening, 00:03:38.68\00:03:41.42 and that's where I said, 00:03:41.45\00:03:42.85 "Hey, I've gotta do something about this." 00:03:42.88\00:03:44.32 >>John: Now, I notice-- and it's been said many times 00:03:44.35\00:03:46.69 that money is the root of all evil. 00:03:46.72\00:03:48.36 That's an incorrect statement. Paul said "the love of money." 00:03:48.39\00:03:52.03 >>Julian: Absolutely. 00:03:52.06\00:03:53.13 >>John: Were you aware-- or how did you become aware 00:03:53.16\00:03:56.03 that you loved money, as it were? 00:03:56.06\00:03:58.27 >>Julian: Hm. Yeah, money is an interesting thing. 00:03:58.30\00:04:00.80 You know, some people will say it's like fire, 00:04:00.84\00:04:02.30 that it can be used to do good or it can be used to do evil. 00:04:02.34\00:04:04.51 You know, they say it's neutral. 00:04:04.54\00:04:07.51 And I agree from that point of view. 00:04:07.54\00:04:09.71 But having experienced money 00:04:09.74\00:04:12.05 and having had this bit of a relationship, 00:04:12.08\00:04:13.65 this bit of a, you know, uh, too close relationship 00:04:13.68\00:04:17.52 with money for a, for a while... 00:04:17.55\00:04:20.39 Money's got claws. 00:04:20.42\00:04:21.79 There's something about money that the more of it 00:04:21.82\00:04:24.63 that you have, the more of it that you want. 00:04:24.66\00:04:27.73 It's just, you know, we all think, 00:04:27.76\00:04:28.80 "Well, if I had double the income that I have now, 00:04:28.83\00:04:30.80 I'd be happy." 00:04:30.83\00:04:31.73 But, you just want more and more and more. 00:04:31.77\00:04:34.54 And I started to see this in my life. 00:04:34.57\00:04:36.00 I thought, "Julian, you fool, 00:04:36.04\00:04:39.04 three years ago you were earning 1/4 of what you're earning now, 00:04:39.07\00:04:44.01 and you still want more." 00:04:44.05\00:04:45.65 You know, if I had been told, 00:04:45.68\00:04:48.02 "Well, in three years' time 00:04:48.05\00:04:49.25 you're gonna have multiples of what you're currently earning," 00:04:49.28\00:04:51.69 I would have gone, "Well, I'll be happy then. 00:04:51.72\00:04:53.59 I'll be satisfied then." 00:04:53.62\00:04:55.52 But the reality is that, no, you want more. 00:04:55.56\00:04:57.33 You want more. 00:04:57.36\00:04:58.59 Money has claws, and it says, "Come, come. Get more of me." 00:04:58.63\00:05:01.86 And that's what I noticed in my life, 00:05:01.90\00:05:03.50 just this crazy dissatisfaction with no matter how much I had. 00:05:03.53\00:05:08.47 >>John: Now, you've written about this. 00:05:08.50\00:05:09.94 You wrote a book with an interesting title, 00:05:09.97\00:05:11.77 "Help! I've Been Blessed!" 00:05:11.81\00:05:13.98 Are you saying money is bad? 00:05:14.01\00:05:15.28 Are you saying that, uh, money is bad for a person? 00:05:15.31\00:05:17.88 >>Julian: No. No. 00:05:17.91\00:05:19.78 I'm saying it can have very bad impacts on a person, 00:05:19.81\00:05:22.95 if they're not careful. 00:05:22.98\00:05:23.89 >>John: Okay, so you're okay with wealth? 00:05:23.92\00:05:25.35 >>Julian: Yeah. 00:05:25.39\00:05:26.52 >>John: You're not pointing the finger at rich people? 00:05:26.55\00:05:27.39 >>Julian: No. 00:05:27.42\00:05:28.06 >>John: All right. 00:05:28.09\00:05:29.12 >>Julian: No. I'm, I'm just saying that it's a, 00:05:29.16\00:05:31.56 as a rich Christian who--if you, if you have a real passion 00:05:31.59\00:05:35.20 for maintaining a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, 00:05:35.23\00:05:38.30 then money is something that Satan will often use to try 00:05:38.33\00:05:42.10 and distract you and drag you off to one side. 00:05:42.14\00:05:44.71 >>John: It's a bit like food, isn't it? 00:05:44.74\00:05:46.21 You gotta have food to live, but it's easy to abuse food 00:05:46.24\00:05:49.94 so that it becomes bad for your body. 00:05:49.98\00:05:51.91 I don't know anyone who can get through life 00:05:51.95\00:05:53.42 without money altogether. 00:05:53.45\00:05:55.75 You've gotta have it. 00:05:55.78\00:05:57.19 >>Julian: Yeah. 00:05:57.22\00:05:58.42 >>John: How do we live in this world without taking onboard 00:05:58.45\00:06:02.56 the love of money? 00:06:02.59\00:06:03.96 We've gotta have it. 00:06:03.99\00:06:05.53 In fact, we've gotta have significant amounts of it, 00:06:05.56\00:06:08.33 particularly at certain times of our life. 00:06:08.36\00:06:10.90 So let's take this time to share with people 00:06:10.93\00:06:14.24 how they can safeguard themselves against developing 00:06:14.27\00:06:17.27 the love of money or the love of stuff. 00:06:17.31\00:06:19.41 We've gotta raise children in this world. 00:06:19.44\00:06:21.74 We gotta have successful families in this world. 00:06:21.78\00:06:24.15 And we wanna get out of this world and into heaven 00:06:24.18\00:06:27.22 without our possessions or our lust after more stuff 00:06:27.25\00:06:31.82 dragging us down. 00:06:31.85\00:06:33.15 Take us through this. 00:06:33.19\00:06:34.96 >>Julian: Yeah, I think it was the evangelist Billy Sunday 00:06:34.99\00:06:37.16 who said that many a man will "slip into hell 00:06:37.19\00:06:39.63 with his hand on the door-knob of heaven." 00:06:39.66\00:06:42.06 You know, it's so close, 00:06:42.10\00:06:43.33 so close, but not quite, and... it's a precarious place to be, 00:06:43.37\00:06:47.40 and, and one of the things that will hold that man down, 00:06:47.44\00:06:49.84 or could hold any of us down, 00:06:49.87\00:06:51.31 is this materialistic culture which we and our families, 00:06:51.34\00:06:54.84 our children are involved in. 00:06:54.88\00:06:57.18 It's a daily thing. It's daily. 00:06:59.01\00:07:01.62 It's daily for us as individual; it's daily for us as parents; 00:07:01.65\00:07:05.19 it's daily for our children; it's, it's daily for everybody. 00:07:05.22\00:07:08.36 We must choose every day to have Jesus as the number one 00:07:08.39\00:07:11.69 in our life. 00:07:11.73\00:07:13.03 Not the goal of our next pay raise, 00:07:13.06\00:07:16.03 not the big sale of, or contract that's just going through, 00:07:16.06\00:07:19.43 not doubling our, our net worth, 00:07:19.47\00:07:22.50 not trying to get onto the Forbes 500 list or, or whatever. 00:07:22.54\00:07:25.64 Our focus has to be Jesus Christ. 00:07:25.67\00:07:27.91 And we need to do everything that we can to maintain 00:07:27.94\00:07:31.91 that relationship. 00:07:31.95\00:07:32.98 >>John: I don't think I've ever meet a Christian 00:07:33.01\00:07:34.25 who's ever said, 00:07:34.28\00:07:35.45 "I just wanna be filthy rich," without having then said, 00:07:35.48\00:07:38.05 "because I wanna give money to God." 00:07:38.09\00:07:40.72 Many, many Christians who are wealthy do give money to God, 00:07:40.76\00:07:43.12 and we thank God for that, 00:07:43.16\00:07:44.33 and, and without that kind of generosity, 00:07:44.36\00:07:47.13 I think the work of the church in many ways around the world 00:07:47.20\00:07:49.13 simply wouldn't be where it is today. 00:07:49.16\00:07:51.27 But do you think that can be a bit of a, a self-deceiving thing 00:07:51.30\00:07:54.37 when people say, 00:07:54.40\00:07:55.64 "Well, if I was rich, I'd just do this and that and the other." 00:07:55.67\00:07:57.87 Can that be a trap? 00:07:57.91\00:07:59.04 >>Julian: It can, very much so, and if there's one thing 00:07:59.07\00:08:00.74 that I've learned, yeah, in this process, 00:08:00.78\00:08:03.21 um, it's that if you're not giving to God 00:08:03.24\00:08:06.45 when you're not earning much, 00:08:06.48\00:08:08.02 you won't be giving to God when you've got a lot. 00:08:08.05\00:08:10.25 All that--riches just magnify your character, 00:08:10.29\00:08:13.46 so if you're generous with next to nothing, 00:08:13.49\00:08:16.59 you'll be generous with billions. 00:08:16.62\00:08:18.96 But if you're tight with next to nothing, 00:08:18.99\00:08:20.90 you'll be tight with billions. 00:08:20.93\00:08:22.23 It's--it just magnifies our character. 00:08:22.26\00:08:23.90 >>John: So how does a person develop this habit 00:08:23.93\00:08:25.30 of generosity? 00:08:25.33\00:08:26.60 Where do you start with that? 00:08:26.63\00:08:27.80 >>Julian: Yeah. 00:08:27.84\00:08:29.07 It, it comes, uh-- Martin Luther, great guy, 00:08:29.10\00:08:32.67 he said there's three conversions. 00:08:32.71\00:08:34.74 So, so from a Christian perspective, 00:08:34.78\00:08:36.51 we have three conversions: 00:08:36.54\00:08:37.48 You're converted in your head, in your heart, 00:08:37.51\00:08:40.32 and in your wallet. 00:08:40.35\00:08:42.68 They can happen at all different times, 00:08:42.72\00:08:44.52 but the interesting thing is that if a person is converted 00:08:44.55\00:08:46.69 in their heart, their wallet comes with it. 00:08:46.72\00:08:49.86 So, you, you can't just say, 00:08:49.89\00:08:52.63 "Well, I think I'm going to become more generous, 00:08:52.66\00:08:54.36 uh, so next week I'm going to give $50 instead of $20, 00:08:54.40\00:08:58.27 like I did last week, and, and if I do that, 00:08:58.30\00:09:01.30 it'll help me to become more generous." 00:09:01.34\00:09:02.90 Well, you can, but it's sort of a, 00:09:02.94\00:09:04.81 it's a, it's a real battle, you know. 00:09:04.84\00:09:07.44 The Bible says that "God loves a cheerful giver." 00:09:07.48\00:09:10.48 To become a cheerful giver, 00:09:10.51\00:09:12.08 we have to have the heart conversion. 00:09:12.11\00:09:14.08 When we have that heart conversion, 00:09:14.12\00:09:15.55 we, we look at what Jesus has done for us. 00:09:15.58\00:09:17.52 He's done so much for us. 00:09:17.55\00:09:18.79 We just want to give. 00:09:18.82\00:09:19.89 We wanna give our time, our talents, our treasures. 00:09:19.92\00:09:22.22 We wanna, we wanna give because that's what Jesus did for us. 00:09:22.26\00:09:24.86 So, I would encourage people to look to, 00:09:24.89\00:09:28.30 look for that heart conversion, 00:09:28.33\00:09:29.80 look to that daily relationship with Christ, 00:09:29.83\00:09:32.87 and then the giving will come easy. 00:09:32.90\00:09:34.40 >>John: I've had people ask me many times about tithing-- 00:09:34.44\00:09:36.64 "Should I tithe? 00:09:36.67\00:09:38.01 And if I tithe, should I tithe on the gross and the net?" 00:09:38.04\00:09:40.31 and so forth. 00:09:40.34\00:09:41.58 How important is tithing, giving a tenth of your increase to God, 00:09:41.61\00:09:45.08 in this process? 00:09:45.11\00:09:46.08 >>Julian: Hm. Very important, very important. 00:09:46.11\00:09:49.32 And whether it's gross or net, I would just say, 00:09:49.35\00:09:51.22 "How do you want your blessings?" 00:09:51.25\00:09:52.55 >>John: That's right. 00:09:52.59\00:09:53.36 >>Julian: [laughs] So it's, uh-- 00:09:53.39\00:09:54.59 but yeah, like, for example, with young people, 00:09:54.62\00:09:56.96 they say to me--a young guy asked me the other day; 00:09:56.99\00:09:59.13 he said, "I've just graduated from university. 00:09:59.16\00:10:00.96 I'm going to get my first paycheck. 00:10:01.00\00:10:02.86 Tell me, what should I do with it?" 00:10:02.90\00:10:04.67 And so I shared with him the rule of tens, where I said, 00:10:04.70\00:10:08.14 "Your first 10 percent goes to God. 00:10:08.17\00:10:10.94 That's your tithe; you're returning 10 percent to God. 00:10:10.97\00:10:12.84 It's an acknowledgement of who He is and the fact 00:10:12.87\00:10:15.28 that He owns all of it. 00:10:15.31\00:10:16.61 The second 10 percent goes to offerings or to others. 00:10:16.64\00:10:20.22 It's helping people in need. 00:10:20.25\00:10:22.55 The third 10 percent goes into savings." 00:10:22.58\00:10:24.55 So that could be going towards his house deposit or, 00:10:24.59\00:10:26.92 or something for the future or just some savings. 00:10:26.96\00:10:29.42 And then the other 70 percent is cost of living. 00:10:29.46\00:10:32.73 Uh, so the rule of tens: 10, 10, 10-- 00:10:32.76\00:10:34.73 10 for God, 10 for others, 10 for your savings. 00:10:34.73\00:10:36.83 It's a Jewish principle. They're doing okay. 00:10:36.87\00:10:39.30 They've been doing it for about 3,000 years. 00:10:39.33\00:10:41.14 I teach it to my children. 00:10:41.17\00:10:42.34 We pass it on from generation to generation. 00:10:42.37\00:10:44.21 So, yes, tithing is an, as I read the Bible, 00:10:44.24\00:10:48.24 an essential thing. 00:10:48.28\00:10:49.48 >>John: Now, you said you've taught this to your, 00:10:49.51\00:10:51.08 to your kids? 00:10:51.11\00:10:51.91 >>Julian: Mm. 00:10:51.95\00:10:52.71 >>John: How did they take to it? 00:10:52.75\00:10:53.78 And now, as they look back over the way mom and dad 00:10:53.82\00:10:56.08 have taught them over the years, 00:10:56.12\00:10:57.42 are they convinced, or do they say, 00:10:57.45\00:10:59.62 "Boy, if I could have some of those 10 percents back, 00:10:59.65\00:11:02.32 I could have more stuff"? 00:11:02.36\00:11:04.69 >>Julian: Yeah. They'll go-- interesting timing. 00:11:04.73\00:11:07.03 About--my, my oldest son has just started university. 00:11:07.10\00:11:10.23 So he's sort of out there on his own somewhat, financially, 00:11:10.27\00:11:12.50 living away from home, and he's struggling, financially. 00:11:12.53\00:11:16.30 He's looking for a job. 00:11:16.34\00:11:17.67 He's not getting money from the government. 00:11:17.71\00:11:19.41 We're sort of feeding him a little bit just to, 00:11:19.44\00:11:21.21 to keep him afloat, you know. 00:11:21.24\00:11:22.78 But he doesn't have very much at all. 00:11:22.81\00:11:25.68 And the other day I was talking to him about this, 00:11:25.71\00:11:29.82 and I was saying, "Well, what are you spending your money on?" 00:11:29.85\00:11:31.79 And we were just going through a few--a little budgeting advice, 00:11:31.82\00:11:34.22 you know, going through things. 00:11:34.26\00:11:35.42 And I could see that he had just paid over 1/3 00:11:35.46\00:11:39.36 of his current net worth, his current bank account, to tithe. 00:11:39.39\00:11:44.30 He had just paid that into tithe. 00:11:44.33\00:11:46.77 And I was like, "Good on you, man." 00:11:46.80\00:11:48.10 You know, just, that's it. 00:11:48.14\00:11:49.74 Put, put it out there, you know. 00:11:49.77\00:11:51.21 And so those principles, I believe, are getting through. 00:11:51.24\00:11:55.28 They've still got a lifetime ahead of them. 00:11:55.31\00:11:56.44 I'm new in the game with parenting, 00:11:56.48\00:11:58.08 but, but, you know, it's, it's an important thing, 00:11:58.11\00:12:00.28 and I know that God will bless. 00:12:00.32\00:12:01.68 >>John: I've heard of people who give to God 00:12:01.72\00:12:04.42 so that God will bless-- 00:12:04.45\00:12:07.66 "If I give this, then God will give me more money." 00:12:07.69\00:12:12.36 Do you consider that an appropriate way 00:12:12.39\00:12:14.10 of looking at God's blessings? 00:12:14.13\00:12:15.80 >>Julian: Malachi chapter 3 has a, a, like a covenant, 00:12:16.80\00:12:21.10 like almost a legal contract from God's point of view to us, 00:12:21.14\00:12:24.24 and He says, "If you return the whole tithe 00:12:24.27\00:12:28.01 and bring all the offerings to me"--honestly-- 00:12:28.04\00:12:32.91 "then I will open up the windows of heaven 00:12:32.95\00:12:35.82 and, and pour out more blessings than you can hold." 00:12:35.85\00:12:38.82 So, yes, in principle, I agree with that. 00:12:38.85\00:12:41.42 However, God has ways of blessing us 00:12:41.46\00:12:44.13 that aren't dollars and cents. 00:12:44.16\00:12:46.23 So, we might pay our tithe or give our offerings 00:12:46.26\00:12:49.56 in dollars and cents, 00:12:49.60\00:12:50.83 but that doesn't mean that God is necessarily 00:12:50.87\00:12:52.47 gonna make us millionaires next year. 00:12:52.50\00:12:54.87 It means that He will bless us. 00:12:54.90\00:12:56.77 And so that could be with health. 00:12:56.81\00:12:58.14 It could be with happy family relationships. 00:12:58.17\00:13:00.18 It could be that old car just that keeps on going. 00:13:00.21\00:13:03.04 There's a whole lot of different ways that God can bless us 00:13:03.08\00:13:04.91 other than giving us a pay raise. 00:13:04.95\00:13:06.58 So, no, I don't think, if I put $100 in the offering this week, 00:13:06.61\00:13:11.29 then I can expect a pay raise by Tuesday. 00:13:11.32\00:13:14.39 But I can expect peace in my heart 00:13:14.42\00:13:17.16 that I am doing what God has asked me to do. 00:13:17.19\00:13:19.03 >>John: And if we do--right?-- if we give so that we'll get... 00:13:19.06\00:13:25.90 that's just a form of, of legalism. 00:13:25.93\00:13:28.47 We're just buying God off, 00:13:28.50\00:13:30.61 and we're surely breaking the tenth commandment, 00:13:30.64\00:13:33.04 which says, "Thou shalt not covet." 00:13:33.07\00:13:35.54 Shouldn't we just be giving out of a heart filled with love 00:13:35.58\00:13:38.48 and then leave it with God to bless us 00:13:38.51\00:13:40.05 however He wants to bless us? 00:13:40.08\00:13:41.48 >>Julian: Yeah. Absolutely, absolutely. 00:13:41.52\00:13:43.32 >>John: And He will bless us, won't He? 00:13:43.35\00:13:44.89 >>Julian: Yes. 00:13:44.92\00:13:45.95 >>John: Do you know of any people who've decided, "I once was young, and now I am old, 00:13:54.56\00:13:56.56 and I've never seen the children of God begging for bread," 00:13:56.60\00:14:00.64 or, you know, he has a number of other things he says in there. 00:14:00.67\00:14:03.04 Um, and that's my experience, too. 00:14:03.07\00:14:05.14 God will care for His faithful people. 00:14:05.17\00:14:07.68 >>John: That's the promise of God. 00:15:52.58\00:15:57.85 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me today 00:15:58.85\00:16:00.16 on It Is Written. 00:16:00.19\00:16:01.22 My guest is Julian Archer, 00:16:01.26\00:16:03.16 an international speaker and an author, 00:16:03.19\00:16:05.69 and I don't know if you use the term, 00:16:05.73\00:16:07.46 but I'd say an expert now in the field of finance 00:16:07.50\00:16:10.90 and the battle that rages in many lives 00:16:10.93\00:16:13.50 between faith and finance, 00:16:13.54\00:16:15.54 between wealth and spirituality or relationship with God. 00:16:15.57\00:16:20.41 Now, word is that you are a member of a very elite club, 00:16:20.44\00:16:24.45 a member of the global "one percent" club. 00:16:24.48\00:16:27.65 Tell me more about this. 00:16:27.68\00:16:29.45 >>Julian Archer: Yeah, so the "one percent" club, 00:16:29.48\00:16:30.99 uh, identifies the wealthiest one percent of adults 00:16:31.02\00:16:34.69 in the world. 00:16:34.72\00:16:35.39 >>John: And you're one of them. 00:16:35.42\00:16:36.49 >>Julian: I am. 00:16:36.52\00:16:37.73 I am, and so I guess you could say that it's an elite club. 00:16:37.76\00:16:40.26 >>John: Sure. 00:16:40.30\00:16:41.36 >>Julian: Uh, if you look at the United Nations data 00:16:41.40\00:16:43.47 from the World Distribution of Household Wealth Report-- 00:16:43.50\00:16:46.60 they put this thing out every year, 00:16:46.63\00:16:48.70 and they look at how is money distributed around the world. 00:16:48.74\00:16:51.54 And, of course, you-- in the media, 00:16:51.57\00:16:53.14 we've had these things like Occupy Wall Street, you know, 00:16:53.17\00:16:55.41 where they've gone in there, 00:16:55.44\00:16:56.38 and they've, they've camped at Wall Street 00:16:56.41\00:16:59.28 saying there's too much inequality 00:16:59.31\00:17:00.82 between the rich and the poor and, you know, 00:17:00.85\00:17:02.22 all this sort of thing. 00:17:02.25\00:17:03.42 And so, it's a, it's a real, a real thing. 00:17:03.45\00:17:05.29 And as a member of the "one percent" club, 00:17:05.32\00:17:07.46 I'm like, "Well, how do I deal with this?" 00:17:07.49\00:17:09.56 You know, I'm richer than 99 percent of adults on earth. 00:17:09.59\00:17:13.66 But it's interesting, when you study the United Nations data, 00:17:13.70\00:17:17.57 that, if you have a net worth-- 00:17:17.60\00:17:21.04 that is, get the value of your assets, total assets, 00:17:21.07\00:17:23.97 minus the value of your total liabilities, 00:17:24.01\00:17:26.81 that, what's left is your net worth. 00:17:26.84\00:17:28.44 If your net worth is $3,000 or more, 00:17:28.48\00:17:33.11 you're richer than 50 percent of adults on the planet. 00:17:33.15\00:17:35.18 >>John: So I'm in the 50 percent club. 00:17:35.22\00:17:36.65 >>Julian: So you're in the 50 percent club? 00:17:36.69\00:17:37.82 Okay, you won't have to keep admitting as we go higher, 00:17:37.85\00:17:39.85 but anyway... [Laughs] 00:17:39.89\00:17:41.66 So the 50 percent club-- 00:17:41.69\00:17:43.02 if you have a net worth of $90,000, 00:17:43.06\00:17:48.30 then you're actually in the 10 percent club. 00:17:48.33\00:17:51.50 So you're richer than 90 percent of adults on earth. 00:17:51.53\00:17:54.50 >>John: What does it take to be in that "one percent" club? 00:17:54.54\00:17:57.71 >>Julian: Mmm. 00:17:57.74\00:17:58.77 My, my first, my, my gut reaction would have been, 00:17:58.81\00:18:01.11 oh, maybe 5 million, 10 million-- 00:18:01.14\00:18:02.54 >>John: Gotta be a lot of money. 00:18:02.58\00:18:03.81 >>Julian: Yeah, it's gotta be a lot of money; that's right. 00:18:03.85\00:18:05.08 Um, but it was quite interesting when I, when I did the research, 00:18:05.11\00:18:08.45 that all it takes to be a member of the elite, 00:18:08.48\00:18:12.15 as we call it, "one percent" club, 00:18:12.19\00:18:14.02 is a net worth of $750,000. 00:18:14.06\00:18:16.76 Not even $1 million. 00:18:16.79\00:18:17.79 You don't have to be a millionaire to be richer 00:18:17.83\00:18:19.53 than 99 percent of adults on the planet-- 00:18:19.56\00:18:21.90 that's not to mention all the children. 00:18:21.93\00:18:23.83 So, when we, when we come to God's Word, 00:18:23.87\00:18:26.60 and we see passages speaking to the rich, 00:18:26.63\00:18:29.20 or we see Jesus talking to the rich, 00:18:29.24\00:18:31.91 I used to always think that that was for the super-rich. 00:18:31.94\00:18:34.38 >>John: The really rich. 00:18:34.41\00:18:35.21 >>Julian: The really, really rich. 00:18:35.24\00:18:36.14 But then I thought, "You know what, 00:18:36.18\00:18:38.31 if I'm richer than 99 percent of adults on earth, 00:18:38.35\00:18:41.52 that's probably talking to me." 00:18:41.55\00:18:44.02 And it made me see God's Word through new eyes, 00:18:44.05\00:18:48.06 uh, and made me realize that, 00:18:48.09\00:18:50.39 "Hey, Julian, you've been really blessed. 00:18:50.43\00:18:51.59 What are you going to do about it?" 00:18:51.63\00:18:52.79 >>John: The statistics say it's true for people; 00:18:52.83\00:18:54.50 the numbers say it's true for countries: 00:18:54.56\00:18:56.60 As wealth increases, religion decreases. 00:18:56.63\00:18:59.37 Now, that's true for Christianity. 00:18:59.40\00:19:00.94 Is that true for other faith groups as well? 00:19:00.97\00:19:03.97 >>Julian: It is, absolutely. 00:19:04.01\00:19:05.01 Hinduism, Muslims, Buddhism, the whole lot. 00:19:05.04\00:19:07.58 I, I talk to leaders of these religions around the world, 00:19:07.61\00:19:11.15 and when I ask them this question, if I say, 00:19:11.18\00:19:13.52 "What is the greatest thing that is taking 00:19:13.55\00:19:15.88 your young people, your young families, away from their faith, 00:19:15.92\00:19:20.06 regardless of religion? 00:19:20.09\00:19:21.79 What is it that's taking them away? 00:19:21.82\00:19:23.99 Is it they're becoming Christians?" 00:19:24.03\00:19:26.16 "No." 00:19:26.19\00:19:27.23 "Is it they're converting to another religion?" 00:19:27.23\00:19:28.66 "No." 00:19:28.70\00:19:29.10 "What is it?" 00:19:29.13\00:19:30.30 "Materialism." 00:19:30.33\00:19:32.37 Our young people, our young families, 00:19:32.40\00:19:33.80 are being converted from Christianity, whatever it is, 00:19:33.84\00:19:37.97 to materialism, by the droves. 00:19:38.01\00:19:41.21 They're just--materialism is having an incredible impact 00:19:41.24\00:19:44.61 on the faith of many people today. 00:19:44.65\00:19:46.95 And it's not just the young people, 00:19:46.98\00:19:48.32 but that's an area that we see it a lot. 00:19:48.35\00:19:50.15 >>John: Okay, so we gotta raise kids in this world 00:19:50.19\00:19:52.25 where there's stuff, stuff, stuff, stuff everywhere. 00:19:52.29\00:19:54.66 You can go to stores now that have thousands and thousands 00:19:54.69\00:19:57.66 of products available, 00:19:57.69\00:19:59.06 and everything about society is telling you, 00:19:59.09\00:20:00.93 "You deserve it; you want it; you have it; you can get it. 00:20:00.96\00:20:03.87 No money down, use this credit card." 00:20:03.90\00:20:05.80 So it's easier and easier and easier to have stuff. 00:20:05.83\00:20:08.14 I, I like the cover, uh, illustration on your book, 00:20:08.17\00:20:10.81 "Help! I've Been Blessed!" 00:20:10.84\00:20:11.91 Here's somebody with money, uh, I mean, everything, 00:20:11.94\00:20:15.28 everything that a person could want. 00:20:15.31\00:20:17.41 How do we navigate this maze? 00:20:17.45\00:20:18.61 We gotta get our families to heaven, 00:20:18.65\00:20:20.38 we wanna get our children to heaven, 00:20:20.42\00:20:21.72 yet all of us are coming up in this morass of materialism. 00:20:21.75\00:20:24.62 What do we do? 00:20:24.65\00:20:25.79 >>Julian: The circumstances in which a child is raised 00:20:25.82\00:20:29.59 will often have a greater impact on them 00:20:29.62\00:20:31.33 than even the example of the parents. 00:20:31.36\00:20:32.99 So...we, we would like to just keep raising our children 00:20:33.03\00:20:39.07 in an affluent environment, but take them on mission trips-- 00:20:39.10\00:20:42.97 yeah, fly them in and out a few times a year 00:20:43.00\00:20:44.57 and help them to build a church or whatever, 00:20:44.61\00:20:46.04 and we think that that's going to do it. 00:20:46.07\00:20:48.14 It will help. No question, it will help. 00:20:48.18\00:20:51.75 But ultimately the environment in which they are raised 00:20:51.78\00:20:54.18 will have a greater impact on them even than your own example 00:20:54.22\00:20:56.89 as parents, so we need to get around this somehow. 00:20:56.92\00:21:00.16 And one of the things that I believe we need to do 00:21:00.19\00:21:02.72 is we need to simplify. 00:21:02.76\00:21:04.13 We need to simplify. 00:21:04.16\00:21:05.93 For our own spiritual lives, 00:21:05.96\00:21:08.10 we need to reduce our assets and responsibilities, 00:21:08.13\00:21:14.27 uh, so that we have more time, more energy, 00:21:14.30\00:21:16.81 and are able to more clearly focus 00:21:16.84\00:21:18.54 on our relationship with God. 00:21:18.57\00:21:20.64 That will also assist our children, 00:21:20.68\00:21:22.48 uh, by them seeing that, that happening, that, hey, 00:21:22.51\00:21:25.11 Mum and Dad really take this Christianity seriously; 00:21:25.15\00:21:30.12 like, they're actually trying to follow Jesus. 00:21:30.15\00:21:32.39 Wow! Really? 00:21:32.42\00:21:34.26 And that will have an incredible impact on them 00:21:34.29\00:21:36.76 and their choices that they make as they go through life. 00:21:36.79\00:21:39.96 If we go through just income increases, lifestyle increases, 00:21:40.00\00:21:44.13 income increases, lifestyle increases, 00:21:44.17\00:21:45.93 the kids will see that-- 00:21:45.97\00:21:46.74 they're not, they're not fools-- 00:21:46.77\00:21:48.27 and they'll wanna do the same thing. 00:21:48.30\00:21:50.14 My belief is that God blesses us beyond our needs 00:21:50.17\00:21:55.51 so that we can increase our standard of giving, 00:21:55.54\00:21:58.55 not our standard of living. 00:21:58.58\00:22:00.35 And if we can show that to the next generation, 00:22:00.38\00:22:03.92 that as our blessings went up, we actually gave more, 00:22:03.95\00:22:08.06 rather than just having fancier and fancier holidays, 00:22:08.09\00:22:10.79 nicer and nicer cars and homes, 00:22:10.83\00:22:12.73 then that will be an absolutely key, uh, transference 00:22:12.76\00:22:17.00 from our generation to theirs in the right direction. 00:22:17.03\00:22:19.50 >>John: Okay, what are you advocating? 00:22:19.53\00:22:21.10 Uh, what I mean is this: 00:22:21.14\00:22:23.51 There was a time you did very well, earned a lot of money; 00:22:23.54\00:22:27.64 businesses were very successful. 00:22:27.68\00:22:29.48 You did not take a vow of poverty. 00:22:29.51\00:22:32.41 You didn't sell everything, and you're now trying to live 00:22:32.45\00:22:34.65 on $10 a week-- that's not what you did. 00:22:34.68\00:22:37.05 So you dialed it back, right? 00:22:37.09\00:22:39.15 >>Julian: Mm. 00:22:39.19\00:22:40.26 >>John: You didn't walk away. You dialed it back-- 00:22:40.29\00:22:42.56 >>Julian: Yep. 00:22:42.59\00:22:43.43 >>John: ...to the level that you felt 00:22:43.46\00:22:44.66 like God was leading your family. 00:22:44.69\00:22:46.29 >>Julian: Mm. 00:22:46.33\00:22:47.10 >>John: How does a person do that? 00:22:47.13\00:22:48.63 Uh, they're saying, 00:22:48.66\00:22:50.23 "Now, well, how do we get to this spiritual place 00:22:50.27\00:22:52.07 so that we're not being owned by our stuff, 00:22:52.10\00:22:53.90 we're not being led around by the love of money?" 00:22:53.94\00:22:57.07 How does a person find that sweet spot? 00:22:57.11\00:23:00.64 You found it. 00:23:00.68\00:23:01.51 >>Julian: Yup. 00:23:01.54\00:23:02.24 >>John: How does someone find it? 00:23:02.28\00:23:03.18 It's gotta differ from person to person. 00:23:03.21\00:23:04.88 How does a person find it? 00:23:04.91\00:23:05.98 >>Julian: Because ultimately what you're looking for 00:23:06.01\00:23:07.08 is peace-- 00:23:07.12\00:23:08.28 in your relationship with God, you're looking for peace. 00:23:08.32\00:23:09.78 You're looking to-- for, for example, 00:23:09.82\00:23:11.89 we used to go on family skiing holidays. 00:23:11.92\00:23:13.42 We would spend $10,000 in a week on a, on a ski holiday 00:23:13.46\00:23:16.32 for the four of us. 00:23:16.36\00:23:17.59 We'd stay in the nice places, you know--we, we did it well. 00:23:17.63\00:23:20.80 Uh...but then we realized, you know what, 00:23:20.83\00:23:25.03 God's probably got better uses for His money than spending 00:23:25.07\00:23:27.00 10 grand on us to go skiing for a week. 00:23:27.04\00:23:30.01 And so we dialed it back. 00:23:30.04\00:23:33.81 Now, one word of advice here: 00:23:33.84\00:23:37.35 If you are married, dial it back together. 00:23:37.38\00:23:39.81 [Laughs] Okay? 00:23:39.85\00:23:41.35 Don't, don't just do as I did in this particular instance. 00:23:41.38\00:23:44.52 My wife, Melinda, she had never skied, 00:23:44.55\00:23:49.12 and then one winter she finally started skiing, 00:23:49.16\00:23:52.49 and she loved it. 00:23:52.53\00:23:53.56 Well, that happened to coincide with the winter, 00:23:53.60\00:23:55.80 the last winter, that I was prepared to spend $10,000 00:23:55.83\00:23:58.43 on a ski holiday. 00:23:58.47\00:23:59.37 So as winter was approaching the next year, 00:23:59.40\00:24:01.20 I announced to the family, as the spiritual head of the home, 00:24:01.24\00:24:05.41 "We're not skiing this year because it's not right. 00:24:05.44\00:24:08.11 It's not right to spend $10,000 a week." 00:24:08.14\00:24:09.98 >>John: And Melinda had been looking forward to this 00:24:10.01\00:24:11.38 for months? 00:24:11.41\00:24:12.51 >>Julian: Well, exactly, yeah, because she had been-- 00:24:12.55\00:24:13.78 this was her first experience skiing, and she just loved it. 00:24:13.82\00:24:16.25 And she's like, "No way!
