There were others besides. 00:00:55.78\00:00:58.82 Then came the fires. 00:00:58.85\00:01:01.02 [Fire crackling] 00:01:01.06\00:01:01.99 In California, fire season comes every year, 00:01:02.02\00:01:05.46 and there's always a danger of fires, always. 00:01:05.49\00:01:08.60 In northern California, 00:01:08.63\00:01:10.00 a swarm of fires affected about six different counties. 00:01:10.03\00:01:14.30 The worst fire of them all: the Tubbs Fire. 00:01:14.34\00:01:17.47 And the Tubbs Fire began burning in the direction of Santa Rosa. 00:01:17.51\00:01:21.48 That's where we're going now. 00:01:21.51\00:01:23.24 In Santa Rosa alone, 00:01:23.28\00:01:25.65 43 people died as a result of the Tubbs Fire. 00:01:25.68\00:01:30.35 That's 43 known deaths; there may be more. 00:01:30.39\00:01:34.56 Nine thousand structures were destroyed, 00:01:34.59\00:01:37.26 5,500 of them in Santa Rosa. 00:01:37.29\00:01:40.73 Three thousand homes were destroyed in Santa Rosa. 00:01:40.76\00:01:44.07 Five percent of Santa Rosa's houses were destroyed. 00:01:44.10\00:01:48.74 The destruction was immense. 00:01:48.77\00:01:51.17 We're on our way to Santa Rosa 00:01:51.21\00:01:52.54 to talk to some survivors of the Tubbs Fire; 00:01:52.57\00:01:57.28 some victims of the Tubbs Fire, that is, 00:01:57.31\00:01:59.25 people who lost everything; 00:01:59.28\00:02:03.02 and people who lost nothing. 00:02:03.05\00:02:06.52 And we'll ask an important question. 00:02:06.55\00:02:08.69 And that question: Where was God? 00:02:08.72\00:02:12.26 Where was God when the fires burned? 00:02:12.29\00:02:13.63 Where was God as people suffered? 00:02:13.66\00:02:15.46 Where was God while people were dying? 00:02:15.50\00:02:18.20 Where was God in the midst of the devastation? 00:02:18.23\00:02:20.34 It's a very important question, 00:02:20.37\00:02:21.74 not only in the context of the fires in California, 00:02:21.77\00:02:24.27 the hurricanes that buffeted the United States, 00:02:24.31\00:02:26.57 but our own lives. 00:02:26.61\00:02:28.04 Everybody meets with tragedy, disaster, loss. 00:02:28.08\00:02:31.38 And that question is often asked. 00:02:31.41\00:02:33.28 That question is: Where was God? 00:02:33.31\00:02:36.85 We're heading to Santa Rosa. 00:02:36.89\00:02:38.92 By the grace of God, we'll find an answer to that question. 00:02:38.95\00:02:44.23 ¤[Soft music]¤ 00:02:45.53\00:02:54.37 >>Marc Selivanoff: So it was, uh, Sunday night. 00:02:54.40\00:02:56.64 We went to bed, uh, October 8. 00:02:56.67\00:02:58.77 And, uh, about maybe 1:30 in the morning, 00:02:58.81\00:03:03.55 the, uh, my wife got a phone call. 00:03:03.58\00:03:07.32 And I could hear the voice on the other end of the line 00:03:07.35\00:03:10.49 was very, uh, tense, and very intense 00:03:10.52\00:03:14.06 maybe would be a better word. 00:03:14.09\00:03:15.29 And she was basically, uh, screaming, 00:03:15.32\00:03:18.13 "There's a fire; it's massive; it's headed your way. 00:03:18.16\00:03:21.16 You need to get out, and get out now." 00:03:21.20\00:03:23.26 >>John: So you get the warning, 00:03:23.30\00:03:24.87 you get the phone call, and so what do you do? No one had ever lived there. 00:19:36.27\00:19:38.84 And we were able to, at 2 in the morning when we left here, 00:19:38.87\00:19:41.28 all in a panic, we were able to go there 00:19:41.31\00:19:44.45 to a place of safety and a place of quiet. 00:19:44.48\00:19:46.61 And so for me, when I feel overwhelmed about that, 00:19:46.65\00:19:49.52 I, I know without a doubt that God had prepared a place for us, 00:19:49.55\00:19:54.02 and that He was watching out for us, 00:19:54.06\00:19:56.52 and that we would be okay. 00:19:56.56\00:19:58.83 >>Courtney: Before the fires when I was meeting 00:19:58.86\00:20:00.66 with my youth pastor, um, when I told her that I was, 00:20:00.70\00:20:04.60 like, "Okay, I'm ready; like, I want to do it. 00:20:04.63\00:20:06.90 I want to get baptized." 00:20:06.94\00:20:07.97 It was about a week and a half before the fires, 00:20:08.00\00:20:10.44 and that's when she had told me. 00:20:10.47\00:20:12.44 And she had said that Satan is pretty much going to test me. 00:20:12.47\00:20:18.05 She said, "It doesn't happen to everyone 00:20:18.08\00:20:20.28 who's going to get baptized, but I have had situations where, 00:20:20.32\00:20:24.55 you know, I've had kids who have had stuff happen to them 00:20:24.59\00:20:27.86 right before they get baptized, 00:20:27.89\00:20:29.72 and that makes them lose a little bit of faith in God, 00:20:29.76\00:20:32.96 or not trust Him, or, you know, get angry at Him or whatever." 00:20:32.99\00:20:37.37 And so she said, you know, "Just be aware." 00:20:37.40\00:20:40.47 Like, there's probably going to be something happen. 00:20:40.50\00:20:42.70 And then a week and a half later, 00:20:42.74\00:20:43.94 that's when the fires happened. 00:20:43.97\00:20:46.14 >>John: So you weren't tempted just to give up on God? 00:21:12.77\00:21:16.00 Well, of course, while not everybody has had their home 00:21:16.04\00:21:19.84 burn or been through Hurricane Irma or some such thing, 00:21:19.87\00:21:25.31 we all suffer loss on some level. 00:21:25.35\00:21:29.92 And it tends to shake our faith somehow. 00:21:29.95\00:21:34.82 Sometimes it's a seismic shake, sometimes a little, small shake. 00:21:34.86\00:21:40.70 But that question comes to you: Where was God? 00:21:40.73\00:21:45.13 Where was God when my child got desperately ill? 00:21:45.17\00:21:49.24 Where was God when my spouse...ruined the marriage? 00:21:49.27\00:21:55.34 Where was God when the fire burned?
