>>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Writn. I'm John Bradshaw. 00:00:19.18\00:00:21.98 Thanks for joining me. 00:00:22.02\00:00:23.95 Go to the Bible anyou find that the Word of God 00:00:23.99\00:00:26.12 says a lot about worship, 00:00:26.15\00:00:28.72 unsurprisingly, as t the Bible is God's book. 00:00:28.76\00:00:32.16 But look in e book of Psalms and you find God appealing to us 00:00:32.19\00:00:35.26 and sang some, some impressive things. 00:00:35.30\00:00:37.70 Look with me at alm 96 and verse 9: 00:00:37.73\00:00:40.70 "O worship the Lord in fear before Him, ththe beauty of holiness: all the earth." 00:00:43.81\00:00:46.81 And in Plm 95 and verse 6, the Bible says, 00:00:46.84\00:00:49.11 "O come, let us worship d bow down: 00:00:49.14\00:00:52.05 let us kneel before the Lord our Makaker." 00:00:52.08\00:00:55.25 And so you mht think, well, yes, of course, worship 00:00:55.28\00:00:57.62 it's the underpinning our relationship with God. 00:00:57.65\00:01:00.42 It speaks of the way we relalate to God as Sovereign, 00:01:00.46\00:01:03.73 as Creator, as Mesty. 00:01:03.76\00:01:05.86 But let's go a ttle bit further. 00:01:05.89\00:01:08.43 Is worship good for you? 00:01:08.46\00:01:09.73 How does the practice of worship actually affect your life? 00:01:09.76\00:01:14.90 Here to discuss with me the physiologygy of worship 00:01:14.94\00:01:17.87 is cardiologist Dr. James Marcum, 00:01:17.91\00:01:20.41 who practices withth the Chattanooga Heart Institute. 00:01:20.44\00:01:23.04 Dr. Marcum, thanks for joining me. 00:01:23.08\00:01:24.38 >>Dr. MaMarcum: My pleasure, John. 00:01:24.41\00:01:25.75 And this excites me more t than anything else, 00:01:25.78\00:01:28.22 because when a patient comes in 00:01:28.25\00:01:30.22 and has a lot of medical problems, 00:01:30.25\00:01:32.65 sometimes they're on ls of pills. 00:01:32.69\00:01:35.36 And these pills have side effefects, 00:01:35.39\00:01:37.13 and they cost mone 00:01:37.16\00:01:38.29 But when youtart talking about things that they can do 00:01:38.33\00:01:41.10 to help improve their body, 00:01:41.13\00:01:42.53 both short term and fofor eternity, 00:01:42.56\00:01:46.20 and you bring up worship, they, 00:01:46.23\00:01:48.14 they sort of shakeke their heads at first. 00:01:48.17\00:01:49.77 ThThey say, "No, how can that help me?" 00:01:49.80\00:01:51.47 >>JoJohn: So, so that's the question. 00:01:51.51\00:01:52.74 How w can worship, you're saying, actually benef your 00:01:52.77\00:01:57.35 health? >>>>Dr. Marcum: Yes, worship is actually a 00:01:57.38\00:02:00.88 presiption. And I have to show the evidence behind it, 00:02:00.92\00:02:03.49 and they have to start doing it. 00:02:03.52\00:02:04.92 But now we have studies that otherhave done, 00:02:04.95\00:02:07.96 even our ministries worked on studies thathow 00:02:07.99\00:02:10.23 how people that worship the true God 00:02:10.26\00:02:12.39 have physiologic benefits our own genetics. 00:02:12.43\00:02:16.33 >>John: So how does that work? 00:02:16.36\00:02:17.57 What you're sasaying is--this is a pretty big statement-- 00:02:17.60\00:02:20.97 that worship affects one's genes. 00:02:21.00\00:02:25.04 >>Dr. Marcum: Yes. That's whwhat we're saying. 00:02:25.11\00:02:26.14 >>John: You're saying that. 00:02:26.17\00:02:27.18 >>Dr. Marcum: And if you go o back a few years ago, 00:02:27.21\00:02:28.24 we haven't aays been able to say this. 00:02:28.28\00:02:30.18 WeWe didn't have the technology. 00:02:30.21\00:02:32.55 But a few years ago, um, Francis llins, 00:02:32.55\00:02:35.28 who's now at the National Institute of H Health, 00:02:35.32\00:02:37.62 he sequenced our DNA. 00:02:37.65\00:02:39.42 >>John: Sure. 00:02:39.45\00:02:40.69 >>Dr. Marcum: Now, what that means is he looked at the DNA. 00:02:40.72\00:02:42.82 Herote a book called "The Language of God." 00:02:42.86\00:02:45.56 He thought that this DNA wawas the language of God, 00:02:45.59\00:02:47.93 because th is how we express ourselves. 00:02:47.96\00:02:50.87 Um, this is how we turn things on and off. 00:02:50.90\00:02:53.23 And if you think of the DNA like a harardware of a computer, 00:02:53.27\00:02:57.77 you know, is is what we're born with, 00:02:57.81\00:02:59.64 and unfortunately, each o one of us, me included, 00:02:59.67\00:03:02.88 is born with bad g genes. 00:03:02.91\00:03:04.38 >>John: Sure. 00:03:04.41\00:03:05.68 >>Dr. Marcum: We have bad genes. And d these have been passed 00:03:05.71\00:03:07.12 down. And soer or later, different things that we do to 00:03:07.15\00:03:11.02 these g genes causes them to malfunction or mutate. 00:03:11.05\00:03:14.12 In fact, we have telomeres that somometimes get shorter, 00:03:14.16\00:03:16.89 anthey damage our DNA. 00:03:16.93\00:03:18.56 When our DNA is damaged, guess wh happens? 00:03:18.59\00:03:22.00 A mutation happens. Then we ha a malfunction. 00:03:22.03\00:03:25.27 And sooner or later, ifnough of these happen, 00:03:25.30\00:03:27.17 we have a symptom. 00:03:27.20\00:03:29.14 And modern medice reaches to treat the symptoms, 00:03:29.17\00:03:31.71 and we do that very effectively sometimes, 00:03:31.74\00:03:33.68 but we don't get at the cause of our bad ges. 00:03:33.71\00:03:36.78 >>John: So explain to me,explain to us, what's in DNA? 00:03:36.85\00:03:42.75 Deoxyribonucle acid-- we know that. 00:03:42.78\00:03:45.69 But what is it, and how does youour DNA 00:03:45.72\00:03:48.12 express self or affect one's day-to-day life? 00:03:48.16\00:03:51.09 >>Dr. Marcumum: Yeah. 00:03:51.13\00:03:52.03 >>John: I know many people arere saying, 00:03:52.06\00:03:53.16 "I know that already, John But for those who don't... 00:03:53.19\00:03:54.96 >>Dr. Marcumum: Well, this is the core of who we are. 00:03:55.00\00:03:57.47 It's our template. It decides everything. 00:03:57.50\00:04:00.07 For instance, when we're talking here, 00:04:00.10\00:04:01.80 the DNA is actually making proteins, 00:04:01.84\00:04:04.87 messenger RNA, 00:04:04.91\00:04:06.17 different t things that is affecting enzyme systems, 00:04:06.21\00:04:08.58 that's affecting the way you ththink, 00:04:08.61\00:04:10.25 the way you move, what makes youheart beating. 00:04:10.28\00:04:12.51 The DNA is at the core of everytng. 00:04:12.55\00:04:15.18 when something malfunctions 00:04:15.25\00:04:16.95 at the very core molecular basis, wlook at DNA. 00:04:16.99\00:04:20.92 >>John: So tl me now. 00:04:20.96\00:04:22.02 Somebody has a malfunction at the DNA level, 00:04:22.06\00:04:24.53 how might that be expressed? 00:04:24.56\00:04:26.16 >>Dr. Marcum: Well, it's accccording-- 00:04:26.19\00:04:27.50 some people are born with bad gegenes, 00:04:27.56\00:04:29.46 d we have, um, genetic diseases. 00:04:29.50\00:04:31.80 Um, and we see that quite a bibit, you know, 00:04:31.83\00:04:33.77 um, Tay-Sachs disease and different sease 00:04:33.80\00:04:36.27 that's passed down from generation to generations. 00:04:36.30\00:04:38.94 Those are genes that havee been affected that we can't 00:04:38.97\00:04:41.58 do anything abt. 00:04:41.61\00:04:42.98 Now, somometimes gene mutations 00:04:43.01\00:04:44.85 are because of the difffferent things we do. 00:04:44.88\00:04:46.61 Let's say yoyou smoke a lot, and you have a genetic defec 00:04:46.65\00:04:50.55 that p predisposes you to cancer, and you smoke. 00:04:50.59\00:04:53.52 Well, that puts stss on those genes, 00:04:53.59\00:04:55.36 and those genes might malfunction oner. 00:04:55.39\00:04:58.09 >>John: And the result might becancer, lung cancer? 00:04:58.13\00:05:00.53 >>Dr. Marcum: ThThat's correct. 00:05:00.56\00:05:01.60 For instance, let's say evyone in the Bradshaw family 00:05:01.63\00:05:04.67 became harard of hearing at age 60, okay? 00:05:04.70\00:05:07.47 >>John: What was that? 00:05:07.50\00:05:08.30 >>Dr. Maum: Oh yeah. [laughs] 00:05:08.34\00:05:09.50 Became h hard of hearing at age 60, 00:05:09.54\00:05:11.44 and I yelled in your ear every sisingle day. 00:05:11.47\00:05:14.18 I'm yelling and screreaming in your ear every day. 00:05:14.21\00:05:16.85 Well, at puts stress on those genes, 00:05:16.88\00:05:19.11 which is the stress of the epigenetics 00:05:19.15\00:05:21.28 the thingshat influences your hardware, 00:05:21.32\00:05:23.39 the software, and those genenes might wear out sooner. 00:05:23.42\00:05:26.92 So y you might have problems at a younger age 00:05:26.99\00:05:29.29 because we put stress on those gene 00:05:29.32\00:05:31.89 Well, that can happen anywhere in our body. 00:05:31.93\00:05:34.50 If we have a genetic defect, we all d 00:05:34.56\00:05:37.20 and we put stress on those genes,, 00:05:37.23\00:05:39.27 whether it be from oking or not sleeping well, 00:05:39.30\00:05:41.97 or yelling, or whatever, those genes might malfunctction 00:05:42.00\00:05:45.97 earlier, and ess what? 00:05:46.01\00:05:47.21 We have a mutation; it leads to aging and diseasese processes. 00:05:47.24\00:05:50.58 Because these genes tell our bodies what to do. 00:05:50.61\00:05:53.55 Everything that we do influenced by these genes. 00:05:53.58\00:05:56.48 >>John: So we can understand the genec code, our DNA, 00:05:56.52\00:05:59.72 as a little bit likeke the program that makes your computer 00:05:59.75\00:06:03.12 run, and we all know if you g get a glitch in the program, 00:06:03.16\00:06:05.26 then it's just not gonna a work, 00:06:05.29\00:06:08.13 and eventually things crash. 00:06:08.16\00:06:09.56 >>Dr. Marcum: Exactly.y. 00:06:09.60\00:06:10.40 >>John: So it's like that. 00:06:10.43\00:06:11.20 >>Dr. Marcum: That's exactly rit. 00:06:11.23\00:06:12.17 >>John: So we can...what? 00:06:12.20\00:06:14.50 >>Dr. Marcum: Influence-- 00:06:14.54\00:06:15.84 >>John: We can influence, we can infnfluence? 00:06:15.87\00:06:17.31 >>Dr. Maum: We can influence our hardware 00:06:17.34\00:06:18.84 by these software, these things that we do. 00:06:18.87\00:06:21.84 >>John: Okay. 00:06:21.88\00:06:23.08 >>>>Dr. Marcum: Um, for instance, if you, if y don't 00:06:23.11\00:06:24.75 smoke, that helps those genes thahat might have cancer in 00:06:24.78\00:06:27.52 them. >>John: Okay. 00:06:27.55\00:06:28.65 >>Dr. Maum: Um, if we do other things that might keep 00:06:28.72\00:06:29.75 the genes from getting older quicke 00:06:29.78\00:06:31.95 and that might be good nunutrition 00:06:31.99\00:06:33.62 or even drinking water or getting enough st. 00:06:33.66\00:06:36.12 affects epigenetics, Well, we're now understanding that worip what affects our genes,, 00:06:39.19\00:06:41.96 keeps us fm getting older. 00:06:42.03\00:06:43.40 There's now some data on this thathows that worship, 00:06:43.43\00:06:46.87 when w we worship God, 00:06:46.90\00:06:48.37 when we worship the best that He's given u 00:06:48.40\00:06:50.81 that affecects our genes. 00:06:50.84\00:06:51.91 And whene don't worship, that tends, 00:06:51.94\00:06:54.44 You know, we look for can put stress on our body. something to 00:06:56.28\00:06:58.41 worshipip. If we worship the wrong things, itit puts stress 00:06:58.45\00:07:01.85 on us as well. >>Johnhn: So, so we have a genetic makeup. 00:07:01.88\00:07:04.49 >>DrDr. Marcum: Um-hmm. 00:07:04.52\00:07:05.65 >>John: It might be that your genes are gonnnna flip out 00:07:05.69\00:07:07.69 in this way, that way, malfunction, mutate. 00:07:07.72\00:07:10.23 Hover, there are things that you can do to aid yourur genes, 00:07:10.26\00:07:15.66 the genetic code, 00:07:15.70\00:07:17.10 to prevent certain this from happening that are negative 00:07:17.13\00:07:20.30 or to cause positive things to hpen that are positive. 00:07:20.34\00:07:23.20 So you can influence your own health 00:07:23.24\00:07:25.71 at the very deepest lelevel. 00:07:25.74\00:07:27.38 And what you're sayi is that worship actually has 00:07:27.41\00:07:31.21 a measurable, materi impact on one's genes. 00:07:31.21\00:07:35.35 >>Dr. Marcum: That's correct. And we're e just now beginning, 00:07:35.38\00:07:37.72 in some of the science that's been de, to look at this. 00:07:37.75\00:07:41.02 e of the original studies by Dr. Newberg 00:07:41.06\00:07:43.73 athe University of Pennsylvania, 00:07:43.79\00:07:45.33 he looked at people's brains, 00:07:45.36\00:07:47.66 and he had people just worship for a sht period of time, 00:07:47.66\00:07:51.13 and saw that their brain, the prefrontal cortex, 00:07:51.17\00:07:53.97 the part that we have that separates us from m animals, 00:07:54.00\00:07:56.57 actually got bigger. 00:07:56.60\00:07:57.81 The anterior cingulalate grew and got bigger just from worship. cortex part of the 00:08:00.91\00:08:03.08 brain And he also fod out that when people worship 00:08:03.11\00:08:05.31 for short periods of time, the e stress part of the brain, 00:08:05.35\00:08:08.25 ththe part we share with animals, the part thadamages us, 00:08:08.28\00:08:11.72 you know, we don't like these chronic stress, 00:08:11.75\00:08:13.46 the part that justst says, I want to stay alive and live, 00:08:13.49\00:08:16.16 that turns o on the chemicals like adrenaline, 00:08:16.19\00:08:18.89 cortisol, inflammation that causes these epigenetitic 00:08:18.93\00:08:23.10 problems that causes us to ageand the DNA to get worse, 00:08:23.13\00:08:25.83 those were turned down in people e that worship. 00:08:25.87\00:08:28.84 So he did that sdy, but studies have been 00:08:28.87\00:08:31.07 even done further says, well, th's, 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.48 see a structural change, 00:08:33.51\00:08:34.91 but it's w what's happening in the molecules, the very A. 00:08:34.94\00:08:38.95 And now we have some studies, you know, 00:08:38.98\00:08:40.65 back at Dusek, at Harvard, enson's Lab, 00:08:40.68\00:08:44.05 they looked at different thgs that people do to relax, 00:08:44.09\00:08:47.49 and people that relax, repetitive prayer, 00:08:47.52\00:08:49.76 they've looked people with yoga, 00:08:49.79\00:08:51.59 those type of things, includining worship, 00:08:51.63\00:08:54.93 those things turn onon and off genes. 00:08:54.93\00:08:57.77 And when those genes, the stress genes are turned off, 00:08:57.80\00:09:00.44 ople do better. 00:09:00.47\00:09:01.87 They, if you think about it, when stresseturn off, 00:09:01.90\00:09:04.64 every chroronic disease will improve, 00:09:04.67\00:09:06.71 slows down aging, slows down inflammatioion, 00:09:06.74\00:09:10.25 lowers blood pressurure, improves immune systems. 00:09:10.28\00:09:13.18 So now, , what I'm trying to, to do right now is, 00:09:13.21\00:09:16.52 well, they've looked at differerent types of worship. 00:09:16.55\00:09:18.62 You know, there's many differenent types of worship. 00:09:18.65\00:09:20.92 There'e's yoga, there's meditation, 00:09:20.96\00:09:22.56 there's repetiti prayer, 00:09:22.59\00:09:24.03 there's differenttypes of worship. 00:09:24.06\00:09:25.33 Well, what would these genelook like 00:09:25.36\00:09:27.50 if w we do biblical worship, 10 minutes of biblicalorship? 00:09:27.50\00:09:31.30 And wouldn't it be great-- Let's lo at the genes. 00:09:32.60\00:09:33.67 we're working on publishing a study that says 00:09:33.70\00:09:35.27 whwhen someone participates in biblical worshi 00:09:35.30\00:09:38.31 this lowowers the risk of chronic disease, 00:09:38.34\00:09:40.64 slows down aging, lowewers the risk of heart attack, 00:09:40.68\00:09:43.68 infections, diabetes, hypertenon, 00:09:43.71\00:09:46.08 alall of these things. 00:09:46.11\00:09:47.08 Well, have the preliminary workup that says 00:09:47.12\00:09:49.45 we know what the answer's gonna to be. 00:09:49.48\00:09:51.15 Now have to do the study. 00:09:51.19\00:09:52.59 >>hn: Fascinating. 00:12:24.91\00:12:27.84 What's unique about the worship ofof God? 00:12:27.88\00:12:30.18 >>Dr. Maum: That is an excellent question. 00:12:30.21\00:12:31.88 That's why we need morore research on this specifically. 00:12:31.91\00:12:35.58 You know, 'cause w we know what the results are going to be. 00:12:35.62\00:12:38.72 We know that as we worship the true God 00:12:38.75\00:12:41.16 biblicalal worship, um, 00:12:41.19\00:12:42.92 we are goi to have more positive changes 00:12:42.96\00:12:45.53 thane would doing anything else, okay? 00:12:45.56\00:12:47.73 ThThe other studies have shown all sorts of thingthat imply 00:12:47.76\00:12:51.30 this, but now we reallhave to have the biblical worship study 00:12:51.33\00:12:54.80 oking at people's DNA directly. 00:12:54.80\00:12:57.77 Um, we have some indirect studies by Newbererg, 00:12:57.81\00:13:00.64 so, as ourrain gets larger when we worship God, 00:13:00.68\00:13:04.38 but he decided what worship looked lik 00:13:04.41\00:13:06.92 But that's a great qstion. 00:13:06.95\00:13:08.35 What does worship lookok like in this end stage? 00:13:08.38\00:13:11.62 You know, what does worship lolook like? 00:13:11.65\00:13:13.02 Some people might worship by studydying the Word, 00:13:13.05\00:13:16.19 byraying. 00:13:16.22\00:13:17.26 Some people ght worship by serving others, 00:13:17.29\00:13:20.23 by praising, by thanking. 00:13:20.26\00:13:22.03 There's many ways of f worship, 00:13:22.06\00:13:24.33 including liviving a life of worship. 00:13:24.37\00:13:26.74 So, but now we havehe technology, 00:13:26.77\00:13:28.57 John, to do these studies to show, you know, well, 00:13:28.60\00:13:32.24 worship for you mighght look like this on your DNA. 00:13:32.27\00:13:35.38 But worship like this might help your DNA en more. 00:13:35.41\00:13:39.01 You know, whwhen you serve, you get this type of benefit 00:13:39.05\00:13:41.62 health benefit. 00:13:41.65\00:13:42.68 But when you serve, pray, and stududy the Word, 00:13:42.72\00:13:45.89 you might get thisype of benefit. 00:13:45.92\00:13:48.02 We're now starting to havehe technology to show 00:13:48.06\00:13:50.89 the type of physiologic changes. 00:13:50.93\00:13:52.66 >>John: So worship is measably good for a person, 00:13:52.69\00:13:55.80 which means that those w do not live a life of worship, 00:13:55.83\00:13:58.70 people who are choosing to live sconnected from God, 00:13:58.73\00:14:01.34 are missing ouout not only spiritually, 00:14:01.37\00:14:03.51 but phically, and therefore spiritually as well, 00:14:03.54\00:14:07.14 as one impacts the other. 00:14:07.18\00:14:08.51 So a patieient comes to you, and you suggest to the patie, 00:14:08.54\00:14:11.21 okay, we're going to walklk down this road. 00:14:11.25\00:14:14.72 How would thatook in practice in a person's life? If they' never worshiped before, I said, 00:15:49.68\00:15:51.25 "Here's 10 mutes of what worship looks like. 00:15:51.28\00:15:53.68 Would you be wilng to do that every day?" 00:15:53.72\00:15:55.85 And so, "Oh, yeah, I'll give that a try." 00:15:55.92\00:15:57.32 And I said, "In addition, let's pick o thing that's stressing 00:15:57.35\00:16:01.12 yourur life out, that's hurting your genes, 00:16:01.16\00:16:03.53 that we can make a change o" 00:16:03.56\00:16:04.96 And it might be something simplele like drinking water, 00:16:04.99\00:16:07.86 or resting or not losing your temper, 00:16:07.86\00:16:10.30 or it might be eating beer or giving up cigarettes. 00:16:10.33\00:16:13.10 Just one thing. 00:16:13.13\00:16:14.34 And whenhey do this, when they actually have that power,r, 00:16:14.37\00:16:18.17 God enters theirife, 00:16:18.21\00:16:19.41 sohen they're in this state of worship, 00:16:19.44\00:16:21.34 the Holy Spirit comes and isorking on this, 00:16:21.38\00:16:23.45 goes into thehippocampus part of the brain. 00:16:23.48\00:16:25.55 So it's working all day long in themem. 00:16:25.58\00:16:27.48 So they have to o decide what they want to do with this worsh. 00:16:27.52\00:16:30.62 So this worship starts in the morning, 00:16:30.65\00:16:32.29 and it goeoes all day long, 00:16:32.32\00:16:33.56 so it's sosort of living in a state of worship. 00:16:33.59\00:16:35.76 And then they start getting powewer, and they notice, 00:16:35.79\00:16:37.83 "Youou know what? I did, I was able to do this." 00:16:37.86\00:16:40.86 And then they feel God comg 00:16:40.90\00:16:42.20 into their life, leading them more and re. 00:16:42.23\00:16:44.03 And as they dodo this, they get very excited. 00:16:44.07\00:16:46.47 And ththen we move to the next thing. 00:16:46.50\00:16:47.57 "Well, wld you like to do this? 00:16:47.64\00:16:48.60 Would you like to do that?" 00:16:48.64\00:16:49.97 And they start making these e powerful changes. 00:16:50.01\00:16:52.24 And as God influences their life, 00:16:52.27\00:16:54.51 gives them t the power to make changes, 00:16:54.54\00:16:55.91 they're doing things outf love and not out of obligation. 00:16:55.98\00:16:59.18 They're doing things for the right asons. 00:16:59.21\00:17:00.88 >>John: You know, it's, I think it's imptant for us 00:17:00.92\00:17:02.82 to point this out: 00:17:02.85\00:17:03.65 we're not suggesting, if youe sick, 00:17:03.69\00:17:05.79 just worship God and you'll getet well. 00:17:05.82\00:17:07.79 This i isn't the new wonder drug, the wonder drug worship. 00:17:07.82\00:17:10.56 But what you're saying is whenhe heart, 00:17:10.59\00:17:12.76 the mind, is focuseded on God and connected to God, 00:17:12.79\00:17:15.73 this measurably benefits a perso 00:17:15.76\00:17:18.13 Can pepeople achieve the same physiological results 00:17:18.17\00:17:24.14 withouout God? 00:17:24.17\00:17:25.47 "I"I'll just relax.
