Thanks for joining me. 00:00:20.62\00:00:23.05 In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. 00:00:23.08\00:00:27.16 And what was it like back then? 00:00:27.19\00:00:28.32 Well, it was beautiful. It was perfect. 00:00:28.36\00:00:31.83 And nobody was sick. 00:00:31.86\00:00:33.53 There were no doctors in the Garden of Eden. 00:00:33.56\00:00:36.20 There were no prescription drugs, 00:00:36.23\00:00:38.13 no medications of any kind. 00:00:38.17\00:00:39.87 There weren't any supplements. 00:00:39.90\00:00:41.20 They were not needed. 00:00:41.24\00:00:44.17 The undertakers, funeral parlors, 00:00:44.21\00:00:46.91 out of business. 00:00:46.94\00:00:47.81 No need. 00:00:47.84\00:00:48.81 Because when God created His first children, 00:00:48.84\00:00:51.58 Adam and Eve, no sickness at all. 00:00:51.61\00:00:54.12 Well, Isaiah wrote in the book of Isaiah 00:00:54.15\00:00:56.32 that we are going to a place where, he said, 00:00:56.35\00:00:58.59 "The inhabitant thereof shall not say, I am sick." 00:00:58.62\00:01:02.49 And when we read in 3 John, 00:01:02.52\00:01:04.29 the little book of 3 John, verse 2, 00:01:04.33\00:01:07.83 we read these words: 00:01:07.86\00:01:09.03 "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things 00:01:09.06\00:01:14.10 and be in health, just as your soul prospers." 00:01:14.14\00:01:18.47 That was John's wish for his readers; 00:01:18.51\00:01:20.68 it's God's wish for us today. 00:01:20.71\00:01:24.81 So what's the reality? 00:01:24.85\00:01:26.41 Illness everywhere you turn. 00:01:26.45\00:01:28.35 Health care problems, not solutions. 00:01:28.38\00:01:32.22 Health care costs blowing out budgets of entire nations. 00:01:32.25\00:01:35.99 People not sure what to do about diseases 00:01:36.02\00:01:38.59 they don't know how to fight. 00:01:38.63\00:01:40.70 Oh my goodness, that was not God's plan. 00:01:40.73\00:01:42.53 To discuss this with me is cardiologist Dr. James Marcum, 00:01:42.56\00:01:45.33 who practices here in Chattanooga, Tennessee. 00:01:45.37\00:01:47.34 Dr. Marcum, thanks for joining me. 00:01:47.37\00:01:48.94 >>Dr. James Marcum: My pleasure. 00:01:48.97\00:01:49.87 And unfortunately, my whole life, 00:01:49.90\00:01:51.87 the last 27 years in practicing cardiology and medicine, 00:01:51.91\00:01:55.24 I see people that are suffering with diseases of all sort. 00:01:55.28\00:02:00.15 >>John: So from a physician's point of view, 00:02:00.18\00:02:02.08 how bad is it? 00:02:02.12\00:02:03.35 >>Dr. Marcum: Oh, well, let's just look at things. 00:02:03.39\00:02:05.55 Over the last 20, 30 years, 00:02:05.59\00:02:07.59 the rates of heart disease keep going up. 00:02:07.62\00:02:10.76 The rates of diabetes keep going up. 00:02:10.79\00:02:13.09 In fact, it's been estimated in the United States, 00:02:13.13\00:02:15.96 by mid-century, 00:02:16.00\00:02:17.00 1 in 3 people will have Type 2 diabetes. 00:02:17.03\00:02:20.24 >>John: One in three? 00:02:20.27\00:02:21.34 >>Dr. Marcum: Yeah, 1 in 3. 00:02:21.37\00:02:22.70 The rates of being overweight go up. 00:02:22.74\00:02:25.04 The risk of joint problems go up. 00:02:25.07\00:02:27.88 Um, high blood pressure keeps going up. 00:02:27.91\00:02:30.65 Every year, more and more chronic diseases. 00:02:30.68\00:02:33.21 Cancer rates keep going up. 00:02:33.25\00:02:35.42 Mental health problems keep going up. 00:02:35.45\00:02:37.65 All of these chronic diseases keep increasing, 00:02:37.69\00:02:40.26 and you ask yourself, is modern medicine fixing these problems? 00:02:40.29\00:02:44.03 >>John: Now, this was not God's plan in the beginning. 00:02:44.06\00:02:45.83 God created perfect people with perfect health. 00:02:45.86\00:02:48.86 So over the last 6,000 years, something has gone wrong. 00:02:48.90\00:02:53.00 And you ask the question, 00:02:53.03\00:02:55.10 modern medicine, is it fixing? 00:02:55.14\00:02:57.91 You might even ask the question, 00:02:57.94\00:02:59.07 is, in some ways, it harming? 00:02:59.11\00:03:00.94 Though I don't mean to sound subversive. 00:03:00.98\00:03:02.81 So here's what we know. 00:03:02.84\00:03:03.88 God created Adam and Eve. Sin entered the picture. 00:03:03.91\00:03:06.35 From then till now, it's been down, down, down 00:03:06.38\00:03:08.45 in terms of our health. 00:03:08.48\00:03:09.62 There have been some upswings. 00:03:09.65\00:03:11.39 You go back a few years-- people were shorter; 00:03:11.42\00:03:13.25 people weren't as healthy; people didn't live as long. 00:03:13.29\00:03:15.66 So there've been some improvements. 00:03:15.69\00:03:17.36 >>Dr. Marcum: Right. 00:03:17.39\00:03:18.23 >>John: So here's a question: 00:03:18.26\00:03:19.53 With the improvements that we've had, 00:03:19.56\00:03:22.03 and I think they're observable in the last, 00:03:22.06\00:03:24.20 I don't know what--call it 50 or 100 years or so-- 00:03:24.23\00:03:27.90 why are things still as bad as they are? 00:03:27.94\00:03:30.84 When are the doctors and the scientists going to figure out 00:03:30.87\00:03:33.01 what the magic bullet is for heart disease 00:03:33.04\00:03:36.04 or diabetes or cancer or stroke? 00:03:36.08\00:03:38.58 >>Dr. Marcum: Yeah, well, the more I learn, 00:03:38.61\00:03:40.65 the less I know. 00:03:40.68\00:03:42.38 And our body is very, very complicated. 00:03:42.42\00:03:45.62 You know, we think of the trillion cells in our brain, 00:03:45.65\00:03:48.32 the quadrillion connections. 00:03:48.36\00:03:49.69 We know very little about the brain and how the brain 00:03:49.72\00:03:52.16 is affecting our whole body, 00:03:52.19\00:03:53.63 and how it turns on and off genes or genetics. 00:03:53.66\00:03:56.30 We know very little about the bowel, 00:03:56.33\00:03:58.37 the flora in our bowel, all sorts of bacteria. 00:03:58.40\00:04:00.90 There's more activity in our bowels 00:04:00.94\00:04:02.57 that affects our entire body, 00:04:02.60\00:04:04.37 including our cardiovascular health. 00:04:04.41\00:04:06.74 Then our immune systems, you know, 00:04:06.78\00:04:08.51 which fights off these bad boys, 00:04:08.54\00:04:10.81 we're just now discovering all things about our immune system 00:04:10.85\00:04:14.15 that we never knew before. 00:04:14.18\00:04:15.45 So as time goes on, things get more complicated, 00:04:15.48\00:04:18.95 and yet we did make some major advances, 00:04:18.99\00:04:21.52 especially, you know, antibiotics, blood transfusions. 00:04:21.56\00:04:25.03 So we have made some processes, but over the years we've got 00:04:25.06\00:04:28.40 into these chronic diseases, these lifestyle diseases, 00:04:28.43\00:04:32.20 the diseases that we put on ourselves that we weren't made, 00:04:32.23\00:04:36.14 designed to have all these stressors on our body, 00:04:36.17\00:04:38.84 which has caused aging and mutations 00:04:38.87\00:04:41.41 and all sorts of bad things to happen. 00:04:41.44\00:04:43.04 >>John: Okay, so this question 00:04:43.08\00:04:44.11 is not meant to skewer the medical system. 00:04:44.15\00:04:47.18 You're a physician, a very-- you're a well-educated physician 00:04:47.22\00:04:52.09 operating at a very high level, 00:04:52.12\00:04:53.22 so I don't mean to come after the medical profession. 00:04:53.25\00:04:55.92 But what in the world's going on? 00:04:55.96\00:04:57.26 This is--we're well into the 21st century now, 00:04:57.29\00:05:01.23 and it just seems like things are getting worse. 00:05:01.26\00:05:04.10 So, what, what are the successes, 00:05:04.13\00:05:08.37 the failings, and the limitations of modern medicine? 00:05:08.40\00:05:12.44 >>Dr. Marcum: Yeah. 00:05:12.47\00:05:13.68 Well, modern medicine is great at treating acute problems. 00:05:13.71\00:05:17.85 You know, if I'm having a heart attack, 00:05:17.88\00:05:20.08 I want to have a stent. 00:05:20.12\00:05:21.58 My heart's going slow; give me a pacemaker. 00:05:21.62\00:05:24.09 If I'm bleeding to death, stop the bleeding; 00:05:24.12\00:05:26.32 give me a blood transfusion. 00:05:26.35\00:05:27.59 So it's great at treating emergencies. 00:05:27.62\00:05:30.29 It's also improving at treating chronic genetic problems. 00:05:30.33\00:05:34.76 Let's say you were born with a gene that's bad. 00:05:34.83\00:05:37.37 Well, we're now studying the genes, and we're finding ways 00:05:37.40\00:05:39.83 that we can do things to help the genes maybe not express 00:05:39.87\00:05:43.17 these things that would cause problems down the road. 00:05:43.20\00:05:46.17 So we're making some inroads to that. 00:05:46.21\00:05:48.84 But where we haven't made much inroads at all 00:05:48.88\00:05:52.01 is our lifestyles, 00:05:52.05\00:05:53.62 the things that we're doing that's changing our very genes, 00:05:53.65\00:05:57.72 that's accelerating aging, 00:05:57.75\00:05:59.32 that's causing all this chronic disease. 00:05:59.35\00:06:01.86 And unfortunately, we're looking more toward what we can do. 00:06:01.89\00:06:06.39 Here, let's have a pill. Let's have a quick fix. 00:06:06.43\00:06:09.13 We're not looking towards the real answers 00:06:09.16\00:06:11.20 to this complicated system, and that's looking at a Creator. 00:06:11.23\00:06:14.90 And I tell people, John, 00:06:14.94\00:06:16.20 that when you're looking at modern medicine, 00:06:16.24\00:06:18.84 there's ditches that we fall in. 00:06:18.87\00:06:20.58 You know, there's the ditches of thinking 00:06:20.61\00:06:22.01 that modern medicine can fix everything. 00:06:22.04\00:06:23.75 >>John: Sure. 00:06:23.78\00:06:24.88 >>Dr. Marcum: There's another ditch on the other side 00:06:24.91\00:06:25.95 of the road that says lifestyle. 00:06:25.98\00:06:27.32 That's all we need is lifestyle. 00:06:27.35\00:06:28.82 >>John: And that modern medicine can't really fix anything? 00:06:28.85\00:06:30.79 >>Dr. Marcum: Right. 00:06:30.82\00:06:31.45 >>John: And that's not true. 00:06:31.49\00:06:32.69 >>Dr. Marcum: Right, and the true path is us to understand 00:06:32.72\00:06:35.16 that when we're sick, which we all are genetically, 00:06:35.19\00:06:38.73 we need a Savior that can rescue us 00:06:38.76\00:06:41.63 from this bad genetics that we've come on. 00:06:41.66\00:06:44.70 >>John: Now, let's get into this more after the break, 00:06:44.73\00:06:47.24 but before the break, let me ask you this: 00:06:47.27\00:06:49.20 So, I think what you've identified 00:06:49.24\00:06:51.94 is that medicine is doing its best. 00:06:51.97\00:06:53.58 >>Dr. Marcum: Mm-hm. 00:06:53.61\00:06:54.38 >>John: Medicine is doing its best, 00:06:54.41\00:06:55.64 and in some areas medicine is doing wonderfully, wonderfully. 00:06:55.68\00:07:00.15 But medicine is up against something 00:07:00.18\00:07:02.45 that it seems it can't overcome, 00:07:02.48\00:07:04.39 and that's not so much disease, 00:07:04.42\00:07:05.89 but the lifestyle of the patient. 00:07:05.92\00:07:08.29 >>Dr. Marcum: Yes. 00:07:08.32\00:07:09.42 >>John: I mean, you can't give anything away, I know, 00:07:09.46\00:07:10.63 but you'd see patients that you know full well, 00:07:10.66\00:07:12.66 if only they did A, B, and C real simple, 00:07:12.69\00:07:15.53 their lives would trend up, but they just won't do it. 00:07:15.56\00:07:18.03 >>Dr. Marcum: Right. 00:07:18.07\00:07:18.97 >>John: So lifestyle is a major component 00:07:19.00\00:07:21.94 of turning this disease thing around, correct? 00:07:21.97\00:07:24.07 >>Dr. Marcum: For chronic disease, yes. 00:07:24.11\00:07:25.44 >>John: For chronic disease. 00:07:25.47\00:07:27.11 >>Dr. Marcum: Diabetes-- can reverse that. 00:07:27.14\00:07:29.01 Hypertension--can reverse that. 00:07:29.04\00:07:31.41 Conditions like sleep apnea, heart disease, 00:07:31.45\00:07:34.72 uh, joint problems, mental health-- 00:07:34.75\00:07:37.65 these are all potentially lifestyle-related diseases 00:07:37.69\00:07:40.66 that can be turned around. 00:07:40.69\00:07:41.99 >>John: Now, before we go to the break, 00:07:42.02\00:07:44.16 uh, we're not pretending that lifestyle can fix 00:07:44.19\00:07:47.86 everyone in every situation, right? 00:07:47.93\00:07:49.76 >>Dr. Marcum: That's correct. 00:07:49.80\00:07:51.00 >>John: But what percentage of lifestyle-related illnesses 00:07:51.03\00:07:54.90 can lifestyle adjustment positively impact? 00:07:54.94\00:07:58.57 >>Dr. Marcum: Well, it's been estimated that 80-90 percent 00:07:58.61\00:08:01.41 of all disease now is chronic. 00:08:01.44\00:08:03.61 These diseases we cause by lifestyle, 80 to 90 percent. 00:08:03.65\00:08:08.12 So if we can get people to change that, 00:08:08.15\00:08:11.39 you know, to change their lifestyle, 00:08:11.42\00:08:13.05 then there's potential that 80-90 percent of chronic disease 00:08:13.09\00:08:17.13 could be reversed. 00:08:17.16\00:08:18.06 >>John: Now, wouldn't that be something?
