>>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:19.18\00:00:21.52 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me today. 00:00:21.55\00:00:24.79 You don't have to go too terribly far, 00:00:24.82\00:00:26.86 read too many web pages or open too many newspapers 00:00:26.89\00:00:29.76 to discover that health care is a major issue 00:00:29.79\00:00:34.10 in these United States and all around the world. 00:00:34.13\00:00:37.57 Major health care challenges are affecting 00:00:37.60\00:00:40.24 millions and millions of people today. 00:00:40.27\00:00:42.70 And, remarkably, 00:00:42.74\00:00:44.54 there are often some very simple things that you can do 00:00:44.57\00:00:46.88 to minimize your risk or to get out 00:00:46.91\00:00:48.81 from under that health burden. 00:00:48.84\00:00:51.01 The Bible is a book that encourages us 00:00:51.05\00:00:52.78 to take our health seriously. 00:00:52.81\00:00:54.75 The Bible tells us that our bodies 00:00:54.78\00:00:56.38 are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:00:56.42\00:00:58.99 Jesus came into this world to give us life more abundantly. 00:00:59.02\00:01:02.82 Back in the Old Testament, God said, 00:01:02.86\00:01:05.13 "I am the Lord who healeth thee." 00:01:05.16\00:01:08.20 Well, we're going to talk about a health subject 00:01:08.23\00:01:10.27 that relates to just about all of us, 00:01:10.30\00:01:12.73 and my guest today is a good friend, 00:01:12.77\00:01:14.57 Dr. David DeRose from CompassHealth Consulting. 00:01:14.60\00:01:17.84 Dr. DeRose, thanks for joining me. 00:01:17.87\00:01:19.04 >>Dr. David DeRose: Great to be with you, John. 00:01:19.07\00:01:20.54 >>John: This is not our first discussion together, 00:01:20.58\00:01:22.08 but this is the first time we've discussed here 00:01:22.11\00:01:24.88 the subject of obesity. 00:01:24.91\00:01:26.85 >>Dr. DeRose: Extremely important subject. 00:01:26.88\00:01:29.12 Some three-quarters of Americans, 00:01:29.15\00:01:31.09 and many people throughout the world, 00:01:31.12\00:01:33.62 impacted by this disorder. 00:01:33.66\00:01:35.16 And what's interesting to me, though, John-- 00:01:35.19\00:01:36.99 we throw out this figure, three-quarters-- 00:01:37.03\00:01:38.66 I mean, that's not just obesity, medically speaking; 00:01:38.69\00:01:41.33 it's also overweight. 00:01:41.36\00:01:42.86 But the problem is something that is getting 00:01:42.90\00:01:45.53 so much attention because it's affecting our youth. 00:01:45.57\00:01:48.50 Something like, uh, 1 in 5 youth 00:01:48.54\00:01:52.07 now meeting the definitions for being significantly overweight. 00:01:52.11\00:01:56.24 >>John: So there's overweight, and there's obesity. 00:01:56.28\00:01:58.81 When does overweight become obesity? 00:01:58.85\00:02:00.52 What's the threshold? 00:02:00.55\00:02:01.48 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, you know, we use numbers 00:02:01.52\00:02:02.82 based on body mass index, which is, you know, 00:02:02.85\00:02:05.52 based on kilograms per meter squared, 00:02:05.55\00:02:08.02 and a lot of people, you know, their eyes kind of glaze over. 00:02:08.06\00:02:11.03 But the simple point I like to make to people, John, is this. 00:02:11.06\00:02:14.10 You know, we're speaking from a biblical perspective. 00:02:14.10\00:02:16.33 The first thing I like people to know is, you know what, 00:02:16.36\00:02:19.33 we can come to Jesus just as we are. 00:02:19.37\00:02:21.40 >>John: That's right. 00:02:21.44\00:02:22.40 >>Dr. DeRose: Jesus is not saying, you know, 00:02:22.44\00:02:23.97 once you lose enough weight, 00:02:24.01\00:02:25.87 then you're good enough to come to me. 00:02:25.91\00:02:27.24 He says, "Whosoever will take of the water of life freely." 00:02:27.28\00:02:31.85 And so that encourages me, 00:02:31.88\00:02:33.85 as we're coming from a biblical perspective. 00:02:33.88\00:02:36.32 >>John: Now, uh, we're going to have to talk about 00:02:36.35\00:02:38.92 some pretty obvious things. 00:02:38.95\00:02:40.66 Uh, if someone is obese, what they can do about it. 00:02:40.69\00:02:43.76 But let's talk about some of the causes for obesity. 00:02:43.79\00:02:45.99 Perhaps they're obvious. 00:02:46.03\00:02:47.23 But let's walk through some of them anyway. 00:02:47.23\00:02:49.46 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, let's talk about the ones that often 00:02:49.50\00:02:51.33 don't come onto the radar screen. 00:02:51.37\00:02:53.00 >>John: Okay. 00:02:53.03\00:02:54.20 >>Dr. DeRose: First of all, there are early life history 00:02:54.24\00:02:56.60 factors that affect our weight. 00:02:56.64\00:02:58.37 Some people in the womb were exposed to stresses 00:02:58.41\00:03:01.64 that predisposed them to high blood pressure 00:03:01.68\00:03:03.88 or to diabetes or to obesity. 00:03:03.91\00:03:06.31 Maybe in early life-- one, 2 years of age-- 00:03:06.35\00:03:10.19 your feeding practices, not of your own choosing, 00:03:10.22\00:03:13.72 were such that it primed you with more fat cells, 00:03:13.76\00:03:17.39 so it's easier for you to be obese. 00:03:17.43\00:03:19.83 Hormonal factors can affect you. 00:03:19.86\00:03:21.73 There are actually metabolic hormonal causes. 00:03:21.76\00:03:24.40 One of the classic ones is Cushing's disorder, 00:03:24.43\00:03:26.80 or Cushing's disease or Cushing's syndrome, 00:03:26.84\00:03:29.00 that actually can cause you to put on excess weight, 00:03:29.04\00:03:31.71 even if you're doing everything right. 00:03:31.74\00:03:33.34 And so here at the very beginning, 00:03:33.38\00:03:35.31 I want to tell people you can't just look at someone and say, 00:03:35.34\00:03:38.51 "Oh, you, you know, you didn't listen to It Is Written; 00:03:38.55\00:03:40.55 you didn't listen to Dr. DeRose and John Bradshaw. 00:03:40.58\00:03:43.15 Otherwise you wouldn't have this problem." 00:03:43.18\00:03:45.09 >>John: We're going to do our best to talk about this 00:03:45.12\00:03:47.02 respectfully and in a nonjudgmental way. 00:03:47.06\00:03:48.92 And I think, I hope, we're going to talk about this redemptively. 00:03:48.96\00:03:54.00 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:03:54.03\00:03:54.93 >>John: What can someone do? 00:03:54.93\00:03:56.13 We don't need to point the finger and be critical, 00:03:56.16\00:03:57.77 but we do want to help people who want to be helped, 00:03:57.80\00:04:00.57 or will help themselves, 00:04:00.60\00:04:01.50 or receive the help that comes from God. 00:04:01.54\00:04:03.57 So where do we begin with this? 00:04:03.61\00:04:05.51 >>Dr. DeRose: The premise I take, John, 00:04:05.54\00:04:06.91 is in the very beginning, when God created us, 00:04:06.94\00:04:10.08 He knew what kind of environment, 00:04:10.11\00:04:12.58 what kind of setting we needed to be in to live for eternity. 00:04:12.61\00:04:15.58 That was God's original intention. 00:04:15.62\00:04:17.29 So although we're not going to live eternally 00:04:17.32\00:04:20.02 on our own devices, God still, in the very beginning, 00:04:20.06\00:04:24.33 gives us clues about what the ideal diet, 00:04:24.36\00:04:27.40 what the ideal activity level, other elements in lifestyle 00:04:27.46\00:04:30.97 that can actually help us to avoid obesity, 00:04:31.00\00:04:34.50 at least to a large extent. 00:04:34.54\00:04:36.40 >>John: You mentioned a moment ago that the challenge 00:04:36.44\00:04:38.71 that we're seeing with kids who are overweight-- 00:04:38.74\00:04:41.31 that is on the rise, is it? 00:04:41.34\00:04:42.81 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:04:42.84\00:04:43.68 >>John: What do we put that down to? 00:04:43.71\00:04:44.88 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, there's a lot. 00:04:44.91\00:04:45.95 I mean, there's studies showing that the more time 00:04:45.98\00:04:47.48 we spend in front of a television--I hate to say it-- 00:04:47.52\00:04:49.68 but even It Is Written. 00:04:49.72\00:04:51.42 If someone is just watching It Is Written nonstop, 00:04:51.45\00:04:53.99 they, the research actually suggests it's not just sitting 00:04:54.02\00:04:57.66 in front of the TV and not doing activity that's a problem, 00:04:57.69\00:05:01.56 but it's also the commercials and the other messages. 00:05:01.60\00:05:04.00 So It Is Written gets, you know, the green light on that basis. 00:05:04.03\00:05:07.00 >>John: Oh, I'm glad to know. All right. All right. 00:05:07.04\00:05:09.00 >>Dr. DeRose: But we're spending far too much time 00:05:09.04\00:05:10.91 doing inactive activities. 00:05:10.94\00:05:12.71 Our kids are being pulled away from physical activity, 00:05:12.74\00:05:16.04 and that's a huge determinant of how much we weigh. 00:05:16.08\00:05:19.41 >>John: Surely it's true-- I have not read the study; 00:05:19.45\00:05:22.38 I didn't write the study-- but my, I have a hunch that, um, 00:05:22.42\00:05:26.59 everybody's connected to the Internet; 00:05:26.62\00:05:28.49 everybody has a device; 00:05:28.52\00:05:29.82 there's so much you can do online. 00:05:29.86\00:05:31.36 You can explore the world, connect with people, 00:05:31.39\00:05:33.70 play games, veg out. 00:05:33.73\00:05:36.50 Before, to get your entertainment, 00:05:36.53\00:05:37.80 you had to run outside and play with your friends. 00:05:37.83\00:05:39.23 Now you can sit in front of a screen. 00:05:39.27\00:05:40.70 That's just true, isn't it? 00:05:40.74\00:05:42.04 >>Dr. DeRose: It just is true, 00:05:42.07\00:05:42.97 and it is something that is contributing 00:05:43.00\00:05:44.91 to the obesity epidemic. 00:05:44.94\00:05:46.21 >>John: What can we do about that? 00:05:46.24\00:05:47.98 >>Dr. DeRose: Basically, it's turning back the clock. 00:05:48.01\00:05:50.35 It's, uh, not having so much screen time. 00:05:50.38\00:05:52.88 It's parents telling their kids, 00:05:52.91\00:05:54.78 you know, here are some limits on the television, 00:05:54.82\00:05:56.75 on the electronic devices, 00:05:56.79\00:05:59.19 and helping to do activity with them. 00:05:59.22\00:06:01.39 There's nothing as powerful as what a parent models 00:06:01.42\00:06:04.86 in his or her life. 00:06:04.89\00:06:06.19 >>John: Okay, so, now that we're adults, 00:06:06.23\00:06:10.23 what can we do to begin to turn this back? 00:06:10.27\00:06:13.34 Let's just start scratching the surface 00:06:13.37\00:06:14.94 and come back to this in a moment. 00:06:14.97\00:06:16.04 What can we do? 00:06:16.07\00:06:17.04 >>Dr. DeRose: Let's start with a simple one, 00:06:17.07\00:06:18.31 and I say it's simple because I've seen my own patients do it. 00:06:18.34\00:06:20.31 I've got a patient in my practice right now. 00:06:20.34\00:06:22.21 He lost 60 pounds over the course of probably six months. 00:06:22.24\00:06:26.48 I said to him, "What did you do?" 00:06:26.51\00:06:28.62 One simple change. 00:06:28.65\00:06:30.49 >>John: What was that? 00:06:30.52\00:06:31.72 >>Dr. DeRose: He got rid of the sugar-sweetened beverages, 00:06:31.75\00:06:33.72 and he's drinking primarily water. 00:06:33.76\00:06:35.66 Now, he's a big guy. 00:06:35.69\00:06:37.03 >>John: I have a friend-- I can tell you this-- 00:06:37.06\00:06:38.66 who lost 130 pounds. 00:06:38.69\00:06:40.53 He was a big guy, too, big, tall guy. 00:06:40.56\00:06:42.73 And, uh, I asked him, same question, "What did you do?" 00:06:42.76\00:06:45.80 He said, "I used to carry soda with me everywhere I went. 00:06:45.83\00:06:49.60 I got rid of it." 00:06:49.64\00:06:50.64 Never realized quite how much he was drinking. 00:06:50.67\00:06:52.77 And that was the thing that really, 00:06:52.81\00:06:55.24 the, the primary component of him losing 130 pounds. 00:06:55.28\00:06:59.95 >>Dr. DeRose: Isn't that amazing? 00:07:00.05\00:07:01.08 >>John: Yeah, it's amazing. 00:07:01.12\00:07:02.08 >>Dr. DeRose: But many, many of my colleagues 00:07:02.12\00:07:03.28 have told me the same thing, just that simple change: 00:07:03.32\00:07:05.99 Go with the water instead of the caloric beverages. 00:07:06.02\00:07:08.39 >>John: And that is a simple change. 00:07:08.42\00:07:09.72 >>Dr. DeRose: It is. 00:07:09.76\00:07:10.99 >>John: Okay, there are other simple changes, many of them. 00:07:11.03\00:07:12.89 We want to get at this thing, obesity, 00:07:12.93\00:07:14.83 and then we're going to turn it around and make 00:07:14.86\00:07:16.06 some spiritual parallels that will bless you in big ways. 00:07:16.10\00:07:20.10 Don't go away. That's all? 00:10:38.70\00:10:39.77 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:10:39.80\00:10:40.64 >>John: Okay, so let's talk about that. 00:10:40.67\00:10:42.04 Someone wants to drop 10 pounds. What should they do? 00:10:42.07\00:10:44.87 >>Dr. DeRose: In the beginning, in Genesis chapter 1, 00:10:44.91\00:10:47.58 God gave Adam and Eve a diet that was wholly plant-based. 00:10:47.61\00:10:52.21 Those plant foods are loaded with fiber and water. 00:10:52.25\00:10:55.52 So eating more of those whole plant foods 00:10:55.55\00:10:57.99 is going to fill me up, 00:10:58.02\00:10:58.95 going to satisfy me with much less calories. 00:10:58.99\00:11:01.49 >>John: Okay, so that's a simple place to start, 00:11:01.52\00:11:03.53 although for some people, 00:11:03.56\00:11:04.59 they can't imagine making those kinds of changes. 00:11:04.63\00:11:07.13 Do you have to change all at once, 00:11:07.13\00:11:08.46 or can you ease into this gradually? 00:11:08.50\00:11:09.86 How do you go about changing what you eat? 00:11:09.90\00:11:12.00 >>Dr. DeRose: The idea is just start doing something, okay? 00:11:12.03\00:11:15.90 So have one meatless day a week. 00:11:15.94\00:11:19.64 Have one meatless meal a week, if that's novel for you. 00:11:19.67\00:11:22.78 And start experimenting more with beans and whole grain. 00:11:22.81\00:11:25.95 >>John: How quickly--you mentioned someone earlier, 00:11:25.98\00:11:28.25 60 pounds in six months-- 00:11:28.28\00:11:30.15 if someone gives themself to some type of lifestyle change-- 00:11:30.19\00:11:32.82 and there's got to be a variance here-- 00:11:32.85\00:11:34.72 how quickly is it reasonable to assume a person 00:11:34.76\00:11:37.63 can see themselves losing weight? 00:11:37.66\00:11:39.19 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, I've worked with intensive 00:11:39.23\00:11:40.53 lifestyle change programs. 00:11:40.56\00:11:41.93 We'd have people come in for two to three weeks 00:11:41.96\00:11:44.07 at a live-in facility, 00:11:44.10\00:11:45.50 and we would typically see weight loss in the range 00:11:45.53\00:11:47.57 of 4-5 percent over that three-week time period. 00:11:47.60\00:11:52.07 So a 200-pound person would drop 10 pounds over that, 00:11:52.11\00:11:55.61 over the course of just two or three weeks. 00:11:55.64\00:11:57.88 So, again, it's attainable with a, 00:11:57.91\00:11:59.75 and that's a very deliberate program. 00:11:59.78\00:12:02.42 And, uh, you know, we're helping them exercise, 00:12:02.45\00:12:04.32 we're helping them eat right; they're more active; 00:12:04.35\00:12:06.42 they're removed from their stressors. 00:12:06.45\00:12:08.02 Because stress and those stress hormones-- 00:12:08.06\00:12:10.53 actually, by the way, they're the same hormones 00:12:10.56\00:12:13.29 that are involved in Cushing's syndrome. 00:12:13.33\00:12:15.50 That syndrome that causes obesity? 00:12:15.53\00:12:19.30 You ramp up your stress hormone levels, 00:12:19.33\00:12:21.24 and you're moving yourself closer-- 00:12:21.27\00:12:23.20 I mean, I'm using a little bit of poetic license here-- 00:12:23.24\00:12:26.04 but closer to a more Cushingoid state. 00:12:26.07\00:12:28.78 >>John: So do something about what you drink. 00:12:28.81\00:12:30.31 Watch what you eat. 00:12:30.35\00:12:31.68 Uh, certainly, you've got to get moving 00:12:31.71\00:12:34.22 and, and start burning some calories and be mobile. 00:12:34.25\00:12:37.35 But let me ask you this question: 00:12:37.39\00:12:39.12 Is there an unhealthy way to go about losing weight? 00:12:39.15\00:12:43.99 What are some things that people should not do? 00:12:44.03\00:12:46.03 >>Dr. DeRose: I recommend that people make lifestyle changes 00:12:46.06\00:12:48.83 that they're going to stick with for life. 00:12:48.86\00:12:51.53 Don't go on these crash diets 00:12:51.57\00:12:53.17 because they're really not sustainable. 00:12:53.20\00:12:55.04 And don't set yourself up for failure by, 00:12:55.07\00:12:57.57 by setting some kind of a goal that's totally unrealistic. 00:12:57.61\00:13:01.11 When I was running a hospital-based 00:13:01.14\00:13:02.98 weight-loss program, I would do a history. 00:13:03.01\00:13:05.21 I'd ask a person, 00:13:05.25\00:13:06.41 "Well, what did you weigh when you were, you know, 15?" 00:13:06.45\00:13:09.58 If a person told me they weighed 400 when they were 15, 00:13:09.62\00:13:12.42 and they're setting a weight loss goal of 120, 00:13:12.45\00:13:15.69 I'm thinking, you know what? 00:13:15.72\00:13:17.39 At 600 pounds, this is not really likely to be attainable. 00:13:17.43\00:13:20.76 Set the goals too high, and even if you make a lot of progress, 00:13:20.80\00:13:24.30 you're going to throw in the towel because you think, 00:13:24.33\00:13:26.13 hey, I could never weigh 120 like my next-door neighbor. 00:13:26.17\00:13:28.94 >>John: You mentioned the fad diets. 00:13:28.97\00:13:31.37 They're not helpful, are they? 00:13:31.41\00:13:32.71 >>Dr. DeRose: They're generally not helpful at all. 00:13:32.74\00:13:34.31 Now, some people say, "Well, but, you know, 00:13:34.34\00:13:35.84 it motivated me to do this." 00:13:35.88\00:13:37.71 But the problem is when you get on a diet 00:13:37.75\00:13:39.85 that causes rapid weight loss, you lose muscle mass as well, 00:13:39.88\00:13:43.52 and we already talked about how that drives metabolism. 00:13:43.55\00:13:46.12 So it makes it so easy when you go back 00:13:46.15\00:13:48.02 to eating your old way of eating. 00:13:48.06\00:13:50.33 Now your metabolism's slower, 00:13:50.36\00:13:51.93 and you actually put on more weight than you originally lost. 00:13:51.96\00:13:54.86 >>John: You mentioned, I think, a key thing: lifestyle change. 00:13:54.93\00:13:57.73 >>Dr. DeRose: Huge. 00:13:57.77\00:13:58.67 >>John: Yeah, you can go on a six-week diet 00:13:58.70\00:13:59.73 or a six-month diet and make a change, 00:13:59.77\00:14:01.24 but you're going to go back to what you were before, 00:14:01.27\00:14:03.37 and what you were before got you to where you didn't want to be. 00:14:03.41\00:14:06.51 So it's really important to keep in mind, 00:14:06.54\00:14:08.24 isn't it, the long haul? 00:14:08.28\00:14:09.54 What changes can I adopt that I can stick with, 00:14:09.58\00:14:13.55 that will continue to provide benefit? 00:14:13.58\00:14:15.52 >>Dr. DeRose: It's really important. 00:14:15.55\00:14:16.85 And when I work closely with people, I say, 00:14:16.89\00:14:18.52 "Look at those things"-- 00:14:18.55\00:14:19.69 if we want to just use diet as an example-- 00:14:19.72\00:14:21.52 "Look at the problem foods. 00:14:21.56\00:14:23.79 What things do you have trouble 00:14:23.83\00:14:25.33 controlling your consumption of?" 00:14:25.36\00:14:27.13 Believe it or not, the best strategy is the same strategy 00:14:27.20\00:14:30.00 we give the alcoholic or the nicotine addict. 00:14:30.03\00:14:32.40 We say, "Leave that food out completely. 00:14:32.43\00:14:34.90 Leave it out completely!" 00:14:34.94\00:14:35.87 You know, they say, "It's my favorite food!" 00:14:35.90\00:14:38.14 But that is the path to success if you have 00:14:38.17\00:14:40.68 an addictive relationship with a certain food. 00:14:40.71\00:14:43.51 >>John: The wonderful thing about attacking 00:14:43.55\00:14:45.21 a diet-related issue is there's so much to eat. 00:14:45.25\00:14:50.62 And if you, if you don't, if someone tells you, 00:14:50.65\00:14:53.36 "Lay off the M&Ms," 00:14:53.39\00:14:54.42 man, you could eat blueberries or carrot sticks. 00:14:54.46\00:14:56.89 I know that didn't excite you, the carrot sticks. 00:14:56.93\00:14:58.63 But you could, you could find all kinds of fruit, 00:14:58.66\00:15:01.76 your favorite fruit. 00:15:01.80\00:15:03.20 You can find-- 00:15:03.23\00:15:04.43 anyhow, there are lots of good alternatives, aren't there? 00:15:04.47\00:15:06.77 >>Dr. DeRose: There are, and the good news, John, 00:15:06.80\00:15:08.90 is God has created us with the ability to develop 00:15:08.94\00:15:12.61 new enjoyments. 00:15:12.64\00:15:13.91 We make a clean break with those things that are harmful. 00:15:13.94\00:15:17.51 We can develop new enjoyments 00:15:17.55\00:15:18.95 for the blueberries and the carrots. 00:15:18.98\00:15:20.62 And I think it's so interesting, when God speaks, 00:15:20.65\00:15:23.39 typically--look at the Ten Commandments. 00:15:23.42\00:15:25.79 He didn't say cut back on your stealing; 00:15:25.82\00:15:28.49 do a little bit less in the way of extra-marital relations, 00:15:28.52\00:15:31.83 right? 00:15:31.86\00:15:32.26 >>John: Right. 00:15:32.29\00:15:33.13 >>Dr. DeRose: Clear-cut guidelines. 00:15:33.16\00:15:35.60 Those are the most powerful when it comes to behavior change. 00:15:35.63\00:15:37.87 >>John: The fact of the matter is that one's diet 00:15:37.90\00:15:39.70 or one's lack of following good health principles 00:15:39.73\00:15:42.57 ends up with obesity, 00:15:42.60\00:15:43.91 which will often just drag a person to an early grave. 00:15:43.94\00:15:46.01 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:15:46.04\00:15:47.24 >>John: So one's motivation to want to make these changes 00:15:47.28\00:15:48.88 should be really pretty high 00:15:48.91\00:15:49.88 because the, not making the changes--disaster. 00:15:49.91\00:15:53.15 Making the changes-- fantastic benefits. 00:15:53.18\00:15:56.12 Fantastic benefits, 00:15:56.15\00:15:57.39 including a clearer mind that will more keenly hear 00:15:57.42\00:16:00.79 the voice of God and discern the will of God. 00:16:00.82\00:16:03.53 We'll discuss that more in just a moment. 00:16:03.56\00:16:07.10 ¤[Music]¤ 00:16:07.86\00:16:09.56 >>Announcer 2: In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says, 00:16:09.60\00:16:12.13 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bead alone, 00:16:12.17\00:16:15.14 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 00:16:15.17\00:16:19.04 "Every Word" is a one-minute Bible-based daily devotional 00:16:19.07\00:16:22.31 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw 00:16:22.34\00:16:24.35 and designed especially for busy people like you. 00:16:24.38\00:16:27.42 Look for "Every Word" on selected networks, 00:16:27.45\00:16:30.19 or watch it online every day on our website, 00:16:30.22\00:16:32.55 itiswritten.com. 00:16:32.59\00:16:34.76 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 00:16:34.79\00:16:36.89 Watch "Every Word." 00:17:59.21\00:18:00.38 >>Dr. David DeRose: It really is, and, you know, John, 00:18:00.41\00:18:02.01 as we speak about the spiritual impact 00:18:02.04\00:18:03.85 and the ministry impact, one of the sobering statistics is, 00:18:03.88\00:18:07.38 if a person is overweight and has diabetes, 00:18:07.42\00:18:11.59 that can increase their risk of dementia up to fourfold. 00:18:11.62\00:18:15.29 So we're talking about things that not only 00:18:15.32\00:18:17.13 cut our life short, 00:18:17.16\00:18:18.46 but they definitely impact our relationship 00:18:18.49\00:18:20.60 with God and with other people. 00:18:20.63\00:18:22.76 >>John: Uh, we talked about diet, 00:18:22.80\00:18:25.00 making good choices with what you eat, what you drink. 00:18:25.03\00:18:27.94 Uh, are there any other things 00:18:27.97\00:18:29.20 that people ought to be thinking about? 00:18:29.24\00:18:31.11 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, I would say have an accountability partner. 00:18:31.14\00:18:33.94 >>John: Okay. 00:18:33.98\00:18:34.94 >>Dr. DeRose: I mean, it could be a spouse, 00:18:34.98\00:18:35.94 could be a close friend, could be a church group. 00:18:35.98\00:18:37.81 Because what we find about behaviors 00:18:37.85\00:18:39.85 is if you have a supportive environment, 00:18:39.88\00:18:42.08 it's powerful. 00:18:42.12\00:18:43.08 Fascinating study in one of the science journals. 00:18:43.12\00:18:45.09 This is a family of journals, the science family of journals. 00:18:45.12\00:18:48.02 The comment of the authors was that basically 00:18:48.06\00:18:51.06 who we keep company with is impacting our risk of obesity. 00:18:51.09\00:18:56.73 >>John: One thing that I find fascinating 00:18:56.77\00:18:59.50 is that sugar consumption is linked to obesity. 00:18:59.53\00:19:03.61 There's sugar in everything. 00:19:03.64\00:19:08.11 Do you think people know, 00:19:08.14\00:19:10.01 even when they eat health foods, 00:19:10.05\00:19:12.25 they're often eating way too much sugar? 00:19:12.28\00:19:14.05 >>Dr. DeRose: Yeah, it's a sad commentary. 00:19:14.08\00:19:15.58 I tell people when they look at those carbohydrate-rich foods, 00:19:15.62\00:19:19.35 shoot for one fifth of the calories of, 00:19:19.39\00:19:22.59 from carbohydrates as being from simple sugars. 00:19:22.62\00:19:25.23 So you're picking that granola because you think it's healthy, 00:19:25.26\00:19:28.30 but that granola may have 50 percent 00:19:28.33\00:19:31.07 of its carbohydrate calories as simple sugars, 00:19:31.10\00:19:33.60 simple carbohydrates. 00:19:33.64\00:19:34.67 >>John: Found an interesting thing. 00:19:34.70\00:19:35.67 Somebody gave me a snack at Christmas, 00:19:35.70\00:19:37.81 you know, as, as you'll do around the office. 00:19:37.84\00:19:40.11 And it was a, it was a sugary snack. 00:19:40.14\00:19:42.88 And I had this sugary snack food in my hand. 00:19:42.91\00:19:45.11 I looked at the sugar content. 00:19:45.15\00:19:46.92 My wife had a granola bar in her hand. 00:19:46.95\00:19:49.88 I said, "Do something for me. 00:19:49.92\00:19:50.95 Look at the sugar content in that granola bar." 00:19:50.99\00:19:53.59 What I had was obviously not a health food. 00:19:53.62\00:19:58.03 What she had is taken to be a health food. 00:19:58.06\00:20:01.40 It had more than double the sugar in the granola bar 00:20:01.43\00:20:05.30 than I had in the sugary snack food that somebody had given me. 00:20:05.33\00:20:08.00 >>Dr. DeRose: It is startling. 00:20:08.04\00:20:09.14 And if you don't read labels, you'll get in trouble. 00:20:09.17\00:20:10.87 And I've seen this happen with so many of the dessert options. 00:20:10.91\00:20:13.34 You know, there's a low-fat dessert. 00:20:13.38\00:20:15.31 You look at it; it's got twice the calories from sugar in it. 00:20:15.34\00:20:18.38 >>John: Mm, and calories from sugar is a real problem? 00:20:18.41\00:20:20.18 >>Dr. DeRose: It is, as are the problems from, 00:20:20.22\00:20:22.32 you know, with fat calories. 00:20:22.35\00:20:23.55 >>John: In most cases, not all, but in most cases 00:20:23.59\00:20:26.72 we are dealing with a preventable health care crisis. 00:20:26.76\00:20:30.36 >>Dr. DeRose: In most cases, you're exactly right. 00:20:30.39\00:20:32.29 And a person, again, doesn't have to reach some ideal number, 00:20:32.33\00:20:35.60 but if they can trim down, adopt healthier behaviors, 00:20:35.63\00:20:38.47 their weight will come down, 00:20:38.50\00:20:39.60 they'll feel better, they'll look better, 00:20:39.63\00:20:41.27 and their ministry will be enhanced. 00:20:41.30\00:20:43.07 You know, one paraphrase of a famous New Testament text is, 00:20:43.10\00:20:47.21 "Don't let the world press you into its mold." 00:20:47.24\00:20:49.81 And, uh, "Be not conformed to this world." 00:20:49.84\00:20:52.78 >>John: Yeah. 00:20:52.81\00:20:53.75 >>Dr. DeRose: But, John, it's so interesting. 00:20:53.78\00:20:54.82 You're right; it's often we slip into these habits. 00:20:54.85\00:20:58.15 But it's being deliberate. It's refocusing our lifestyle. 00:20:58.19\00:21:02.02 That's really where it starts. 00:21:02.06\00:21:03.16 >>John: Yeah, for sure. Okay, now let's talk about this. 00:21:03.19\00:21:05.83 You eat too much; you, there ends up being too much of you. 00:21:05.86\00:21:10.23 What about people who, uh, consume the Bible, 00:21:10.27\00:21:14.80 uh, read spiritual books, attend worship services? 00:21:14.84\00:21:17.84 They, they receive, receive, receive, but don't give. 00:21:17.87\00:21:22.78 I've heard of spiritual obesity being referred to, 00:21:22.81\00:21:26.25 where you consume and consume and consume. 00:21:26.28\00:21:28.82 God wants for His children to be not just consumers 00:21:28.85\00:21:32.65 of spiritual things, but sharers, producers. 00:21:32.69\00:21:35.29 Discuss that with me as a minister of the gospel. 00:21:35.32\00:21:37.03 >>Dr. DeRose: No, it's a great analogy, 00:21:37.06\00:21:38.46 because Jesus, if you wanted to summarize 00:21:38.49\00:21:40.43 His great commission in one word, 00:21:40.46\00:21:41.90 the word is "go." 00:21:41.93\00:21:43.37 And so it's, what we find in the obesity realm is true: 00:21:43.40\00:21:47.30 It's not just the diet, but it's the activity. 00:21:47.34\00:21:49.77 It's the going. 00:21:49.80\00:21:50.74 And it's so true in the spiritual realm, John. 00:21:50.77\00:21:52.57 You and I have seen it. 00:21:52.61\00:21:53.74 You can have this lethargy, really, 00:21:53.78\00:21:55.98 that comes over a person who just is so focused on 00:21:56.01\00:21:58.81 "what can I get out of the Bible?" 00:21:58.85\00:22:00.35 And, in fact, their spiritual life suffers. 00:22:00.38\00:22:03.39 They can be going to church meetings. 00:22:03.42\00:22:04.95 They can be watching all the It Is Written programs. 00:22:04.99\00:22:07.82 But it's not at the spiritual level where they could be 00:22:07.86\00:22:11.13 because they're not sharing. 00:22:11.16\00:22:12.29 >>John: Paul told Timothy to learn these things 00:22:12.33\00:22:14.30 and then teach them to others, so that they can teach others. 00:22:14.36\00:22:17.53 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:22:17.57\00:22:18.73 >>John: Yeah. So what would you say to that person who, 00:22:18.77\00:22:20.27 who maybe--and there's a, there's a massive amount 00:22:20.30\00:22:23.34 of people who've never shared their faith. 00:22:23.37\00:22:26.84 Never. 00:22:26.88\00:22:28.01 Never opened up the pages of the Bible with somebody, 00:22:28.04\00:22:29.71 never witnessed, 00:22:29.74\00:22:30.95 never invited someone to a, a church or religious service. 00:22:30.98\00:22:33.62 How do we help those people to become spiritually active 00:22:33.65\00:22:37.09 rather than spiritually obese? 00:22:37.12\00:22:39.49 >>Dr. DeRose: I think it begins with recognizing 00:22:39.52\00:22:41.82 Jesus' call for each one of us. 00:22:41.86\00:22:43.76 We're all called to be disciple-makers. 00:22:43.79\00:22:46.39 When we recognize that, it should change our prayer life. 00:22:46.43\00:22:49.33 Lord, how do You want me to fulfill that calling today? 00:22:49.36\00:22:54.07 Give me an opportunity. 00:22:54.10\00:22:55.14 Show me someone that I can encourage, 00:22:55.17\00:22:57.21 someone that I can share with. 00:22:57.24\00:22:58.57 >>John: I want to read that passage that you mentioned 00:22:58.61\00:23:00.44 because it's just, it's just so important. 00:23:00.48\00:23:02.58 In Matthew chapter 28, the great commission, 00:23:02.61\00:23:05.21 at the end of the chapter: 00:23:05.25\00:23:07.05 "Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, 00:23:07.08\00:23:08.95 'All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.'" 00:23:08.98\00:23:11.45 He said, "'Go therefore.'" 00:23:11.49\00:23:12.99 Go. You can't go and be inactive. 00:23:13.02\00:23:15.69 "'And make disciples of all nations, 00:23:15.72\00:23:17.99 baptizing them in the name of the Father 00:23:18.03\00:23:19.73 and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 00:23:19.76\00:23:22.26 teaching them to observe all things 00:23:22.30\00:23:24.00 that I have commanded you.'" 00:23:24.03\00:23:25.00 And then Jesus promises us His presence with us. 00:23:25.03\00:23:28.10 God has commissioned every one of us to be a disciple-maker. 00:23:28.14\00:23:31.34 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:23:31.37\00:23:32.41 >>John: And perhaps we are gifted in various ways, 00:23:32.44\00:23:34.48 and it seems to come more naturally to some 00:23:34.51\00:23:36.71 than to others. 00:23:36.75\00:23:37.38 But you can't say, 00:23:37.41\00:23:38.48 "Oh, sharing my faith is not my spiritual gift." 00:23:38.51\00:23:40.98 There's nothing to hide behind here. 00:23:41.02\00:23:42.82 God brings us into contact with people. 00:23:42.85\00:23:44.52 If we're prayerful and we're on the lookout, 00:23:44.55\00:23:46.96 we can find people to share our faith with. 00:23:46.99\00:23:49.89 And that's just good for us on a spiritual level. 00:23:49.92\00:23:52.69 Not just good for them, but good for us. 00:23:52.73\00:23:54.30 >>Dr. DeRose: It is, and the way this all comes full circle 00:23:54.30\00:23:56.56 is pray for someone who has needs like yours. 00:23:56.60\00:23:59.10 If you're trying to lose weight, 00:23:59.13\00:24:00.64 pray that God will bring you into contact 00:24:00.67\00:24:02.57 with someone else who needs to trim down, 00:24:02.60\00:24:05.34 and maybe that's a person not of your faith. 00:24:05.37\00:24:07.61 Maybe they don't know what you know spiritually. 00:24:07.64\00:24:09.81 But as you work together on your health, 00:24:09.84\00:24:12.05 it opens up doors for you to share your faith. 00:24:12.08\00:24:15.18 >>John: Doing something about destructive lifestyle habits 00:24:15.22\00:24:18.09 is an insurmountable problem for many people. 00:24:18.12\00:24:20.19 However, here's what we remember. 00:24:20.22\00:24:22.52 Jesus said, "I am with you always." 00:24:22.56\00:24:24.69 Paul wrote, 00:24:24.73\00:24:25.89 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." 00:24:25.93\00:24:29.26 And he wrote in the same chapter, Philippians chapter 4, 00:24:29.30\00:24:32.23 "My God shall supply all your need 00:24:32.27\00:24:34.80 according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." 00:24:34.84\00:24:37.11 So we don't want to be talking about righteousness by works 00:24:37.14\00:24:40.64 or health by works. 00:24:40.68\00:24:42.98 Everything we do we want to do in association 00:24:43.01\00:24:45.85 and cooperation with God, 00:24:45.88\00:24:47.58 who blesses you, who, who dwells in you, 00:24:47.62\00:24:51.19 and will work in you 00:24:51.22\00:24:52.19 "both to will and to do for His good pleasure." 00:24:52.22\00:24:54.72 So we would encourage you today: Take hold of the hand of God. 00:24:54.76\00:24:57.93 If you're looking at losing some pounds, 00:24:57.96\00:24:59.79 if you're looking at getting active, 00:24:59.83\00:25:01.20 if you're dealing with a lifestyle condition 00:25:01.23\00:25:03.26 that you know could be remedied or reversed, 00:25:03.30\00:25:07.00 simply by making some simple changes, 00:25:07.04\00:25:09.00 if you've never been able to make them, 00:25:09.04\00:25:10.37 you can go to God in prayer and say, 00:25:10.41\00:25:12.41 "This is what I need. 00:25:12.44\00:25:15.08 I am willing. Work in my life." 00:25:15.11\00:25:17.75 And Jesus says, "Ask and it shall be given. 00:25:17.78\00:25:22.22 Seek and you shall find." 00:25:22.25\00:25:24.12 So, if you have the knowledge in your head, 00:25:24.15\00:25:27.92 Christ in your heart, 00:25:27.96\00:25:29.79 it seems to me like you've got everything you need. 00:25:29.82\00:25:31.89 >>Dr. DeRose: You do, and, uh, all His biddings are enablings. 00:25:31.93\00:25:35.30 God will give you the power to make the changes 00:25:35.33\00:25:37.43 He impresses you to make. 00:25:37.47\00:25:39.23 >>John: We both know that God wants the very best for us. 00:25:40.57\00:25:43.27 But at times that can be a challenge. 00:25:43.30\00:25:46.21 What do you do about obesity? 00:25:46.24\00:25:48.34 How do you get your weight to where you want it to be, 00:25:48.38\00:25:50.11 or maybe where God wants it to be, 00:25:50.15\00:25:51.55 and keep it there? 00:25:51.58\00:25:53.18 I want you to get today's free offer, 00:25:53.21\00:25:54.42 a DVD addressing this issue of obesity. 00:25:54.45\00:25:57.19 It will help you. 00:25:57.22\00:25:58.89 Call us on 800-253-3000, 00:25:58.92\00:26:01.56 800-253-3000. 00:26:01.59\00:26:04.13 Or visit itiswritten.com. 00:26:04.16\00:26:07.13 >>John: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 00:26:10.50\00:26:12.83 is a faith-based ministry, 00:26:12.87\00:26:15.10 and it's your support that makes it possible 00:26:15.14\00:26:17.14 for us to share God's good news with the entire world. 00:26:17.17\00:26:21.01 Your tax-deductible gift 00:26:21.04\00:26:22.58 can be sent to the address on your screen, 00:26:22.61\00:26:24.71 or through our website, itiswritten.com. 00:26:24.75\00:26:28.82 Thank you for your continued prayerful support. 00:26:28.85\00:26:31.32 Our toll-free number is 800-253-3000, 00:26:31.35\00:26:34.89 800-253-3000. 00:26:34.92\00:26:37.09 Our web address is itiswritten.com. 00:26:37.13\00:26:39.96 >>John Bradshaw: Dr. David DeRose, 00:26:40.70\00:26:42.13 thanks for joining me today. 00:26:42.16\00:26:43.10 This has been fun.
