>>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:19.28\00:00:21.62 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me today. 00:00:21.65\00:00:24.89 You don't have to go too terribly far, 00:00:24.92\00:00:26.96 read too many web pages or open too many newspapers 00:00:26.99\00:00:29.86 to discover that health care is a major issue 00:00:29.89\00:00:34.20 in these United States and all around the world. 00:00:34.23\00:00:37.67 Major health care challenges are affecting 00:00:37.70\00:00:40.34 millions and millions of people today. 00:00:40.37\00:00:42.80 And, remarkably, 00:00:42.84\00:00:44.64 there are often some very simple things that you can do 00:00:44.67\00:00:46.98 to minimize your risk or to get out 00:00:47.01\00:00:48.91 from under that health burden. 00:00:48.94\00:00:51.11 The Bible is a book that encourages us 00:00:51.15\00:00:52.88 to take our health seriously. 00:00:52.91\00:00:54.85 The Bible tells us that our bodies 00:00:54.88\00:00:56.48 are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:00:56.52\00:00:59.09 Jesus came into this world to give us life more abundantly. 00:00:59.12\00:01:02.92 Back in the Old Testament, God said, 00:01:02.96\00:01:05.23 "I am the Lord who healeth thee." 00:01:05.26\00:01:08.30 Well, we're going to talk about a health subject 00:01:08.33\00:01:10.37 that relates to just about all of us, 00:01:10.40\00:01:12.83 and my guest today is a good friend, 00:01:12.87\00:01:14.67 Dr. David DeRose from CompassHealth Consulting. 00:01:14.70\00:01:17.94 Dr. DeRose, thanks for joining me. 00:01:17.97\00:01:19.14 >>Dr. David DeRose: Great to be with you, John. 00:01:19.17\00:01:20.64 >>John: This is not our first discussion together, 00:01:20.68\00:01:22.18 but this is the first time we've discussed here 00:01:22.21\00:01:24.98 the subject of obesity. 00:01:25.01\00:01:26.95 >>Dr. DeRose: Extremely important subject. 00:01:26.98\00:01:29.22 Some three-quarters of Americans, 00:01:29.25\00:01:31.19 and many people throughout the world, 00:01:31.22\00:01:33.72 impacted by this disorder. 00:01:33.76\00:01:35.26 And what's interesting to me, though, John-- 00:01:35.29\00:01:37.09 we throw out this figure, three-quarters-- 00:01:37.13\00:01:38.76 I mean, that's not just obesity, medically speaking; 00:01:38.79\00:01:41.43 it's also overweight. 00:01:41.46\00:01:42.96 But the problem is something that is getting 00:01:43.00\00:01:45.63 so much attention because it's affecting our youth. 00:01:45.67\00:01:48.60 Something like, uh, 1 in 5 youth 00:01:48.64\00:01:52.17 now meeting the definitions for being significantly overweight. 00:01:52.21\00:01:56.34 >>John: So there's overweight, and there's obesity. 00:01:56.38\00:01:58.91 When does overweight become obesity? 00:01:58.95\00:02:00.62 What's the threshold? 00:02:00.65\00:02:01.58 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, you know, we use numbers 00:02:01.62\00:02:02.92 based on body mass index, which is, you know, 00:02:02.95\00:02:05.62 based on kilograms per meter squared, 00:02:05.65\00:02:08.12 and a lot of people, you know, their eyes kind of glaze over. 00:02:08.16\00:02:11.13 But the simple point I like to make to people, John, is this. 00:02:11.16\00:02:14.20 You know, we're speaking from a biblical perspective. 00:02:14.20\00:02:16.43 The first thing I like people to know is, you know what, 00:02:16.46\00:02:19.43 we can come to Jesus just as we are. 00:02:19.47\00:02:21.50 >>John: That's right. 00:02:21.54\00:02:22.50 >>Dr. DeRose: Jesus is not saying, you know, 00:02:22.54\00:02:24.07 once you lose enough weight, 00:02:24.11\00:02:25.97 then you're good enough to come to me. 00:02:26.01\00:02:27.34 He says, "Whosoever will take of the water of life freely." 00:02:27.38\00:02:31.95 And so that encourages me, 00:02:31.98\00:02:33.95 as we're coming from a biblical perspective. 00:02:33.98\00:02:36.42 >>John: Now, uh, we're going to have to talk about 00:02:36.45\00:02:39.02 some pretty obvious things. 00:02:39.05\00:02:40.76 Uh, if someone is obese, what they can do about it. 00:02:40.79\00:02:43.86 But let's talk about some of the causes for obesity. 00:02:43.89\00:02:46.09 Perhaps they're obvious. 00:02:46.13\00:02:47.30 But let's walk through some of them anyway. 00:02:47.36\00:02:49.56 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, let's talk about the ones that often 00:02:49.60\00:02:51.43 don't come onto the radar screen. 00:02:51.47\00:02:53.10 >>John: Okay. 00:02:53.13\00:02:54.30 >>Dr. DeRose: First of all, there are early life history 00:02:54.34\00:02:56.71 factors that affect our weight. 00:02:56.74\00:02:58.47 Some people in the womb were exposed to stresses 00:02:58.51\00:03:01.74 that predisposed them to high blood pressure 00:03:01.78\00:03:03.98 or to diabetes or to obesity. 00:03:04.01\00:03:06.41 Maybe in early life-- one, 2 years of age-- 00:03:06.45\00:03:10.29 your feeding practices, not of your own choosing, 00:03:10.32\00:03:13.82 were such that it primed you with more fat cells, 00:03:13.86\00:03:17.49 so it's easier for you to be obese. 00:03:17.53\00:03:19.93 Hormonal factors can affect you. 00:03:19.96\00:03:21.83 There are actually metabolic hormonal causes. 00:03:21.86\00:03:24.50 One of the classic ones is Cushing's disorder, 00:03:24.53\00:03:26.90 or Cushing's disease or Cushing's syndrome, 00:03:26.94\00:03:29.10 that actually can cause you to put on excess weight, 00:03:29.14\00:03:31.81 even if you're doing everything right. 00:03:31.84\00:03:33.44 And so here at the very beginning, 00:03:33.48\00:03:35.41 I want to tell people you can't just look at someone and say, 00:03:35.44\00:03:38.61 "Oh, you, you know, you didn't listen to It Is Written; 00:03:38.65\00:03:40.65 you didn't listen to Dr. DeRose and John Bradshaw. 00:03:40.68\00:03:43.25 Otherwise you wouldn't have this problem." 00:03:43.28\00:03:45.19 >>John: We're going to do our best to talk about this 00:03:45.22\00:03:47.12 respectfully and in a nonjudgmental way. 00:03:47.16\00:03:49.02 And I think, I hope, we're going to talk about this redemptively. 00:03:49.06\00:03:54.10 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:03:54.13\00:03:55.00 >>John: What can someone do? 00:03:55.03\00:03:56.23 We don't need to point the finger and be critical, 00:03:56.26\00:03:57.87 but we do want to help people who want to be helped, 00:03:57.90\00:04:00.67 or will help themselves, 00:04:00.70\00:04:01.60 or receive the help that comes from God. 00:04:01.64\00:04:03.67 So where do we begin with this? 00:04:03.71\00:04:05.61 >>Dr. DeRose: The premise I take, John, 00:04:05.64\00:04:07.01 is in the very beginning, when God created us, 00:04:07.04\00:04:10.18 He knew what kind of environment, 00:04:10.21\00:04:12.68 what kind of setting we needed to be in to live for eternity. 00:04:12.71\00:04:15.68 That was God's original intention. 00:04:15.72\00:04:17.39 So although we're not going to live eternally 00:04:17.42\00:04:20.12 on our own devices, God still, in the very beginning, 00:04:20.16\00:04:24.43 gives us clues about what the ideal diet, 00:04:24.46\00:04:27.50 what the ideal activity level, other elements in lifestyle 00:04:27.56\00:04:31.07 that can actually help us to avoid obesity, 00:04:31.10\00:04:34.60 at least to a large extent. 00:04:34.64\00:04:36.50 >>John: You mentioned a moment ago that the challenge 00:04:36.54\00:04:38.81 that we're seeing with kids who are overweight-- 00:04:38.84\00:04:41.41 that is on the rise, is it? 00:04:41.44\00:04:42.91 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:04:42.94\00:04:43.78 >>John: What do we put that down to? 00:04:43.81\00:04:44.98 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, there's a lot. 00:04:45.01\00:04:46.05 I mean, there's studies showing that the more time 00:04:46.08\00:04:47.58 we spend in front of a television--I hate to say it-- 00:04:47.62\00:04:49.78 but even It Is Written. 00:04:49.82\00:04:51.52 If someone is just watching It Is Written nonstop, 00:04:51.55\00:04:54.09 they, the research actually suggests it's not just sitting 00:04:54.12\00:04:57.76 in front of the TV and not doing activity that's a problem, 00:04:57.79\00:05:01.66 but it's also the commercials and the other messages. 00:05:01.70\00:05:04.10 So It Is Written gets, you know, the green light on that basis. 00:05:04.13\00:05:07.10 >>John: Oh, I'm glad to know. All right. All right. 00:05:07.14\00:05:09.10 >>Dr. DeRose: But we're spending far too much time 00:05:09.14\00:05:11.01 doing inactive activities. 00:05:11.04\00:05:12.81 Our kids are being pulled away from physical activity, 00:05:12.84\00:05:16.14 and that's a huge determinant of how much we weigh. 00:05:16.18\00:05:19.51 >>John: Surely it's true-- I have not read the study; 00:05:19.55\00:05:22.48 I didn't write the study-- but my, I have a hunch that, um, 00:05:22.52\00:05:26.69 everybody's connected to the Internet; 00:05:26.72\00:05:28.59 everybody has a device; 00:05:28.62\00:05:29.92 there's so much you can do online. 00:05:29.96\00:05:31.46 You can explore the world, connect with people, 00:05:31.49\00:05:33.80 play games, veg out. 00:05:33.83\00:05:36.60 Before, to get your entertainment, 00:05:36.63\00:05:37.90 you had to run outside and play with your friends. 00:05:37.93\00:05:39.33 Now you can sit in front of a screen. 00:05:39.37\00:05:40.80 That's just true, isn't it? 00:05:40.84\00:05:42.14 >>Dr. DeRose: It just is true, 00:05:42.17\00:05:43.07 and it is something that is contributing 00:05:43.10\00:05:45.01 to the obesity epidemic. 00:05:45.04\00:05:46.31 >>John: What can we do about that? 00:05:46.34\00:05:48.08 >>Dr. DeRose: Basically, it's turning back the clock. 00:05:48.11\00:05:50.45 It's, uh, not having so much screen time. 00:05:50.48\00:05:52.98 It's parents telling their kids, 00:05:53.01\00:05:54.88 you know, here are some limits on the television, 00:05:54.92\00:05:56.85 on the electronic devices, 00:05:56.89\00:05:59.29 and helping to do activity with them. 00:05:59.32\00:06:01.49 There's nothing as powerful as what a parent models 00:06:01.52\00:06:04.96 in his or her life. 00:06:04.99\00:06:06.29 >>John: Okay, so, now that we're adults, 00:06:06.33\00:06:10.33 what can we do to begin to turn this back? 00:06:10.37\00:06:13.44 Let's just start scratching the surface 00:06:13.47\00:06:15.04 and come back to this in a moment. 00:06:15.07\00:06:16.14 What can we do? 00:06:16.17\00:06:17.14 >>Dr. DeRose: Let's start with a simple one, 00:06:17.17\00:06:18.41 and I say it's simple because I've seen my own patients do it. 00:06:18.44\00:06:20.41 I've got a patient in my practice right now. 00:06:20.44\00:06:22.31 He lost 60 pounds over the course of probably six months. 00:06:22.34\00:06:26.58 I said to him, "What did you do?" 00:06:26.61\00:06:28.72 One simple change. 00:06:28.75\00:06:30.59 >>John: What was that? 00:06:30.62\00:06:31.82 >>Dr. DeRose: He got rid of the sugar-sweetened beverages, 00:06:31.85\00:06:33.82 and he's drinking primarily water. 00:06:33.86\00:06:35.76 Now, he's a big guy. 00:06:35.79\00:06:37.13 >>John: I have a friend-- I can tell you this-- 00:06:37.16\00:06:38.76 who lost 130 pounds. 00:06:38.79\00:06:40.63 He was a big guy, too, big, tall guy. 00:06:40.66\00:06:42.83 And, uh, I asked him, same question, "What did you do?" 00:06:42.86\00:06:45.90 He said, "I used to carry soda with me everywhere I went. 00:06:45.93\00:06:49.70 I got rid of it." 00:06:49.74\00:06:50.74 Never realized quite how much he was drinking. 00:06:50.77\00:06:52.87 And that was the thing that really, 00:06:52.91\00:06:55.34 the, the primary component of him losing 130 pounds. 00:06:55.38\00:07:00.12 >>Dr. DeRose: Isn't that amazing? 00:07:00.15\00:07:01.18 >>John: Yeah, it's amazing. 00:07:01.22\00:07:02.18 >>Dr. DeRose: But many, many of my colleagues 00:07:02.22\00:07:03.39 have told me the same thing, just that simple change: 00:07:03.42\00:07:06.09 Go with the water instead of the caloric beverages. 00:07:06.12\00:07:08.49 >>John: And that is a simple change. 00:07:08.52\00:07:09.82 >>Dr. DeRose: It is. 00:07:09.86\00:07:11.09 >>John: Okay, there are other simple changes, many of them. 00:07:11.13\00:07:12.99 We want to get at this thing, obesity, 00:07:13.03\00:07:14.93 and then we're going to turn it around and make 00:07:14.96\00:07:16.16 some spiritual parallels that will bless you in big ways. 00:07:16.20\00:07:20.20 Don't go away. That's all? 00:10:38.80\00:10:39.87 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:10:39.90\00:10:40.74 >>John: Okay, so let's talk about that. 00:10:40.77\00:10:42.14 Someone wants to drop 10 pounds. What should they do? 00:10:42.17\00:10:44.97 >>Dr. DeRose: In the beginning, in Genesis chapter 1, 00:10:45.01\00:10:47.68 God gave Adam and Eve a diet that was wholly plant-based. 00:10:47.71\00:10:52.31 Those plant foods are loaded with fiber and water. 00:10:52.35\00:10:55.62 So eating more of those whole plant foods 00:10:55.65\00:10:58.09 is going to fill me up, 00:10:58.12\00:10:59.05 going to satisfy me with much less calories. 00:10:59.09\00:11:01.59 >>John: Okay, so that's a simple place to start, 00:11:01.62\00:11:03.63 although for some people, 00:11:03.66\00:11:04.69 they can't imagine making those kinds of changes. 00:11:04.73\00:11:07.23 Do you have to change all at once, 00:11:07.23\00:11:08.56 or can you ease into this gradually? 00:11:08.60\00:11:09.96 How do you go about changing what you eat? 00:11:10.00\00:11:12.10 >>Dr. DeRose: The idea is just start doing something, okay? 00:11:12.13\00:11:16.00 So have one meatless day a week. 00:11:16.04\00:11:19.74 Have one meatless meal a week, if that's novel for you. 00:11:19.77\00:11:22.88 And start experimenting more with beans and whole grain. 00:11:22.91\00:11:26.05 >>John: How quickly--you mentioned someone earlier, 00:11:26.08\00:11:28.35 60 pounds in six months-- 00:11:28.38\00:11:30.25 if someone gives themself to some type of lifestyle change-- 00:11:30.29\00:11:32.92 and there's got to be a variance here-- 00:11:32.95\00:11:34.82 how quickly is it reasonable to assume a person 00:11:34.86\00:11:37.73 can see themselves losing weight? 00:11:37.76\00:11:39.29 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, I've worked with intensive 00:11:39.33\00:11:40.63 lifestyle change programs. 00:11:40.66\00:11:42.03 We'd have people come in for two to three weeks 00:11:42.06\00:11:44.17 at a live-in facility, 00:11:44.20\00:11:45.60 and we would typically see weight loss in the range 00:11:45.63\00:11:47.67 of 4-5 percent over that three-week time period. 00:11:47.70\00:11:52.17 So a 200-pound person would drop 10 pounds over that, 00:11:52.21\00:11:55.71 over the course of just two or three weeks. 00:11:55.74\00:11:57.98 So, again, it's attainable with a, 00:11:58.01\00:11:59.85 and that's a very deliberate program. 00:11:59.88\00:12:02.52 And, uh, you know, we're helping them exercise, 00:12:02.55\00:12:04.42 we're helping them eat right; they're more active; 00:12:04.45\00:12:06.52 they're removed from their stressors. 00:12:06.55\00:12:08.12 Because stress and those stress hormones-- 00:12:08.16\00:12:10.63 actually, by the way, they're the same hormones 00:12:10.66\00:12:13.40 that are involved in Cushing's syndrome. 00:12:13.43\00:12:15.60 That syndrome that causes obesity? 00:12:15.63\00:12:19.40 You ramp up your stress hormone levels, 00:12:19.43\00:12:21.34 and you're moving yourself closer-- 00:12:21.37\00:12:23.30 I mean, I'm using a little bit of poetic license here-- 00:12:23.34\00:12:26.14 but closer to a more Cushingoid state. 00:12:26.17\00:12:28.88 >>John: So do something about what you drink. 00:12:28.91\00:12:30.41 Watch what you eat. 00:12:30.45\00:12:31.78 Uh, certainly, you've got to get moving 00:12:31.81\00:12:34.32 and, and start burning some calories and be mobile. 00:12:34.35\00:12:37.45 But let me ask you this question: 00:12:37.49\00:12:39.22 Is there an unhealthy way to go about losing weight? 00:12:39.25\00:12:44.09 What are some things that people should not do? 00:12:44.13\00:12:46.13 >>Dr. DeRose: I recommend that people make lifestyle changes 00:12:46.16\00:12:48.93 that they're going to stick with for life. 00:12:48.96\00:12:51.63 Don't go on these crash diets 00:12:51.67\00:12:53.27 because they're really not sustainable. 00:12:53.30\00:12:55.14 And don't set yourself up for failure by, 00:12:55.17\00:12:57.67 by setting some kind of a goal that's totally unrealistic. 00:12:57.71\00:13:01.21 When I was running a hospital-based 00:13:01.24\00:13:03.08 weight-loss program, I would do a history. 00:13:03.11\00:13:05.31 I'd ask a person, 00:13:05.35\00:13:06.51 "Well, what did you weigh when you were, you know, 15?" 00:13:06.55\00:13:09.68 If a person told me they weighed 400 when they were 15, 00:13:09.72\00:13:12.52 and they're setting a weight loss goal of 120, 00:13:12.55\00:13:15.79 I'm thinking, you know what? 00:13:15.82\00:13:17.49 At 600 pounds, this is not really likely to be attainable. 00:13:17.53\00:13:20.86 Set the goals too high, and even if you make a lot of progress, 00:13:20.90\00:13:24.40 you're going to throw in the towel because you think, 00:13:24.43\00:13:26.23 hey, I could never weigh 120 like my next-door neighbor. 00:13:26.27\00:13:29.04 >>John: You mentioned the fad diets. 00:13:29.07\00:13:31.47 They're not helpful, are they? 00:13:31.51\00:13:32.81 >>Dr. DeRose: They're generally not helpful at all. 00:13:32.84\00:13:34.41 Now, some people say, "Well, but, you know, 00:13:34.44\00:13:35.94 it motivated me to do this." 00:13:35.98\00:13:37.81 But the problem is when you get on a diet 00:13:37.85\00:13:39.95 that causes rapid weight loss, you lose muscle mass as well, 00:13:39.98\00:13:43.62 and we already talked about how that drives metabolism. 00:13:43.65\00:13:46.22 So it makes it so easy when you go back 00:13:46.25\00:13:48.12 to eating your old way of eating. 00:13:48.16\00:13:50.43 Now your metabolism's slower, 00:13:50.46\00:13:52.03 and you actually put on more weight than you originally lost. 00:13:52.06\00:13:54.96 >>John: You mentioned, I think, a key thing: lifestyle change. 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.83 >>Dr. DeRose: Huge. 00:13:57.87\00:13:58.77 >>John: Yeah, you can go on a six-week diet 00:13:58.80\00:13:59.83 or a six-month diet and make a change, 00:13:59.87\00:14:01.34 but you're going to go back to what you were before, 00:14:01.37\00:14:03.47 and what you were before got you to where you didn't want to be. 00:14:03.51\00:14:06.61 So it's really important to keep in mind, 00:14:06.64\00:14:08.34 isn't it, the long haul? 00:14:08.38\00:14:09.64 What changes can I adopt that I can stick with, 00:14:09.68\00:14:13.65 that will continue to provide benefit? 00:14:13.68\00:14:15.62 >>Dr. DeRose: It's really important. 00:14:15.65\00:14:16.95 And when I work closely with people, I say, 00:14:16.99\00:14:18.62 "Look at those things"-- 00:14:18.65\00:14:19.79 if we want to just use diet as an example-- 00:14:19.82\00:14:21.62 "Look at the problem foods. 00:14:21.66\00:14:23.89 What things do you have trouble 00:14:23.93\00:14:25.43 controlling your consumption of?" 00:14:25.46\00:14:27.23 Believe it or not, the best strategy is the same strategy 00:14:27.30\00:14:30.10 we give the alcoholic or the nicotine addict. 00:14:30.13\00:14:32.50 We say, "Leave that food out completely. 00:14:32.53\00:14:35.00 Leave it out completely!" 00:14:35.04\00:14:35.97 You know, they say, "It's my favorite food!" 00:14:36.00\00:14:38.24 But that is the path to success if you have 00:14:38.27\00:14:40.78 an addictive relationship with a certain food. 00:14:40.81\00:14:43.61 >>John: The wonderful thing about attacking 00:14:43.65\00:14:45.31 a diet-related issue is there's so much to eat. 00:14:45.35\00:14:50.72 And if you, if you don't, if someone tells you, 00:14:50.75\00:14:53.46 "Lay off the M&Ms," 00:14:53.49\00:14:54.52 man, you could eat blueberries or carrot sticks. 00:14:54.56\00:14:56.99 I know that didn't excite you, the carrot sticks. 00:14:57.03\00:14:58.73 But you could, you could find all kinds of fruit, 00:14:58.76\00:15:01.86 your favorite fruit. 00:15:01.90\00:15:03.30 You can find-- 00:15:03.33\00:15:04.53 anyhow, there are lots of good alternatives, aren't there? 00:15:04.57\00:15:06.87 >>Dr. DeRose: There are, and the good news, John, 00:15:06.90\00:15:09.00 is God has created us with the ability to develop 00:15:09.04\00:15:12.71 new enjoyments. 00:15:12.74\00:15:14.01 We make a clean break with those things that are harmful. 00:15:14.04\00:15:17.61 We can develop new enjoyments 00:15:17.65\00:15:19.05 for the blueberries and the carrots. 00:15:19.08\00:15:20.72 And I think it's so interesting, when God speaks, 00:15:20.75\00:15:23.49 typically--look at the Ten Commandments. 00:15:23.52\00:15:25.89 He didn't say cut back on your stealing; 00:15:25.92\00:15:28.59 do a little bit less in the way of extra-marital relations, 00:15:28.62\00:15:31.93 right? 00:15:31.96\00:15:32.36 >>John: Right. 00:15:32.39\00:15:33.23 >>Dr. DeRose: Clear-cut guidelines. 00:15:33.26\00:15:35.70 Those are the most powerful when it comes to behavior change. 00:15:35.73\00:15:37.97 >>John: The fact of the matter is that one's diet 00:15:38.00\00:15:39.80 or one's lack of following good health principles 00:15:39.83\00:15:42.67 ends up with obesity, 00:15:42.70\00:15:44.01 which will often just drag a person to an early grave. 00:15:44.04\00:15:46.11 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:15:46.14\00:15:47.34 >>John: So one's motivation to want to make these changes 00:15:47.38\00:15:48.98 should be really pretty high 00:15:49.01\00:15:49.98 because the, not making the changes--disaster. 00:15:50.01\00:15:53.25 Making the changes-- fantastic benefits. 00:15:53.28\00:15:56.22 Fantastic benefits, 00:15:56.25\00:15:57.49 including a clearer mind that will more keenly hear 00:15:57.52\00:16:00.89 the voice of God and discern the will of God. 00:16:00.92\00:16:03.63 We'll discuss that more in just a moment. 00:16:03.66\00:16:07.20 ¤[Music]¤ 00:16:07.96\00:16:09.66 >>Announcer 2: In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says, 00:16:09.70\00:16:12.23 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bead alone, 00:16:12.27\00:16:15.24 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 00:16:15.27\00:16:19.14 "Every Word" is a one-minute Bible-based daily devotional 00:16:19.17\00:16:22.41 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw 00:16:22.44\00:16:24.45 and designed especially for busy people like you. 00:16:24.48\00:16:27.52 Look for "Every Word" on selected networks, 00:16:27.55\00:16:30.29 or watch it online every day on our website, 00:16:30.32\00:16:32.65 itiswritten.com. 00:16:32.69\00:16:34.86 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 00:16:34.89\00:16:36.99 Watch "Every Word." 00:17:59.31\00:18:00.48 >>Dr. David DeRose: It really is, and, you know, John, 00:18:00.51\00:18:02.11 as we speak about the spiritual impact 00:18:02.14\00:18:03.95 and the ministry impact, one of the sobering statistics is, 00:18:03.98\00:18:07.48 if a person is overweight and has diabetes, 00:18:07.52\00:18:11.69 that can increase their risk of dementia up to fourfold. 00:18:11.72\00:18:15.39 So we're talking about things that not only 00:18:15.42\00:18:17.23 cut our life short, 00:18:17.26\00:18:18.56 but they definitely impact our relationship 00:18:18.59\00:18:20.70 with God and with other people. 00:18:20.73\00:18:22.86 >>John: Uh, we talked about diet, 00:18:22.90\00:18:25.10 making good choices with what you eat, what you drink. 00:18:25.13\00:18:28.04 Uh, are there any other things 00:18:28.07\00:18:29.30 that people ought to be thinking about? 00:18:29.34\00:18:31.21 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, I would say have an accountability partner. 00:18:31.24\00:18:34.04 >>John: Okay. 00:18:34.08\00:18:35.04 >>Dr. DeRose: I mean, it could be a spouse, 00:18:35.08\00:18:36.04 could be a close friend, could be a church group. 00:18:36.08\00:18:37.91 Because what we find about behaviors 00:18:37.95\00:18:39.95 is if you have a supportive environment, 00:18:39.98\00:18:42.18 it's powerful. 00:18:42.22\00:18:43.18 Fascinating study in one of the science journals. 00:18:43.22\00:18:45.19 This is a family of journals, the science family of journals. 00:18:45.22\00:18:48.12 The comment of the authors was that basically 00:18:48.16\00:18:51.16 who we keep company with is impacting our risk of obesity. 00:18:51.19\00:18:56.83 >>John: One thing that I find fascinating 00:18:56.87\00:18:59.60 is that sugar consumption is linked to obesity. 00:18:59.63\00:19:03.71 There's sugar in everything. 00:19:03.74\00:19:08.21 Do you think people know, 00:19:08.24\00:19:10.11 even when they eat health foods, 00:19:10.15\00:19:12.35 they're often eating way too much sugar? 00:19:12.38\00:19:14.15 >>Dr. DeRose: Yeah, it's a sad commentary. 00:19:14.18\00:19:15.68 I tell people when they look at those carbohydrate-rich foods, 00:19:15.72\00:19:19.45 shoot for one fifth of the calories of, 00:19:19.49\00:19:22.69 from carbohydrates as being from simple sugars. 00:19:22.72\00:19:25.33 So you're picking that granola because you think it's healthy, 00:19:25.36\00:19:28.40 but that granola may have 50 percent 00:19:28.43\00:19:31.17 of its carbohydrate calories as simple sugars, 00:19:31.20\00:19:33.70 simple carbohydrates. 00:19:33.74\00:19:34.77 >>John: Found an interesting thing. 00:19:34.80\00:19:35.77 Somebody gave me a snack at Christmas, 00:19:35.80\00:19:37.91 you know, as, as you'll do around the office. 00:19:37.94\00:19:40.21 And it was a, it was a sugary snack. 00:19:40.24\00:19:42.98 And I had this sugary snack food in my hand. 00:19:43.01\00:19:45.21 I looked at the sugar content. 00:19:45.25\00:19:47.02 My wife had a granola bar in her hand. 00:19:47.05\00:19:49.98 I said, "Do something for me. 00:19:50.02\00:19:51.05 Look at the sugar content in that granola bar." 00:19:51.09\00:19:53.69 What I had was obviously not a health food. 00:19:53.72\00:19:58.13 What she had is taken to be a health food. 00:19:58.16\00:20:01.50 It had more than double the sugar in the granola bar 00:20:01.53\00:20:05.40 than I had in the sugary snack food that somebody had given me. 00:20:05.43\00:20:08.10 >>Dr. DeRose: It is startling. 00:20:08.14\00:20:09.24 And if you don't read labels, you'll get in trouble. 00:20:09.27\00:20:10.97 And I've seen this happen with so many of the dessert options. 00:20:11.01\00:20:13.44 You know, there's a low-fat dessert. 00:20:13.48\00:20:15.41 You look at it; it's got twice the calories from sugar in it. 00:20:15.44\00:20:18.48 >>John: Mm, and calories from sugar is a real problem? 00:20:18.51\00:20:20.28 >>Dr. DeRose: It is, as are the problems from, 00:20:20.32\00:20:22.42 you know, with fat calories. 00:20:22.45\00:20:23.65 >>John: In most cases, not all, but in most cases 00:20:23.69\00:20:26.82 we are dealing with a preventable health care crisis. 00:20:26.86\00:20:30.46 >>Dr. DeRose: In most cases, you're exactly right. 00:20:30.49\00:20:32.39 And a person, again, doesn't have to reach some ideal number, 00:20:32.43\00:20:35.70 but if they can trim down, adopt healthier behaviors, 00:20:35.73\00:20:38.57 their weight will come down, 00:20:38.60\00:20:39.70 they'll feel better, they'll look better, 00:20:39.73\00:20:41.37 and their ministry will be enhanced. 00:20:41.40\00:20:43.17 You know, one paraphrase of a famous New Testament text is, 00:20:43.20\00:20:47.31 "Don't let the world press you into its mold." 00:20:47.34\00:20:49.91 And, uh, "Be not conformed to this world." 00:20:49.94\00:20:52.88 >>John: Yeah. 00:20:52.91\00:20:53.85 >>Dr. DeRose: But, John, it's so interesting. 00:20:53.88\00:20:54.92 You're right; it's often we slip into these habits. 00:20:54.95\00:20:58.25 But it's being deliberate. It's refocusing our lifestyle. 00:20:58.29\00:21:02.12 That's really where it starts. 00:21:02.16\00:21:03.26 >>John: Yeah, for sure. Okay, now let's talk about this. 00:21:03.29\00:21:05.93 You eat too much; you, there ends up being too much of you. 00:21:05.96\00:21:10.33 What about people who, uh, consume the Bible, 00:21:10.37\00:21:14.90 uh, read spiritual books, attend worship services? 00:21:14.94\00:21:17.94 They, they receive, receive, receive, but don't give. 00:21:17.97\00:21:22.88 I've heard of spiritual obesity being referred to, 00:21:22.91\00:21:26.35 where you consume and consume and consume. 00:21:26.38\00:21:28.92 God wants for His children to be not just consumers 00:21:28.95\00:21:32.75 of spiritual things, but sharers, producers. 00:21:32.79\00:21:35.39 Discuss that with me as a minister of the gospel. 00:21:35.42\00:21:37.13 >>Dr. DeRose: No, it's a great analogy, 00:21:37.16\00:21:38.56 because Jesus, if you wanted to summarize 00:21:38.59\00:21:40.53 His great commission in one word, 00:21:40.56\00:21:42.00 the word is "go." 00:21:42.03\00:21:43.47 And so it's, what we find in the obesity realm is true: 00:21:43.50\00:21:47.40 It's not just the diet, but it's the activity. 00:21:47.44\00:21:49.87 It's the going. 00:21:49.90\00:21:50.84 And it's so true in the spiritual realm, John. 00:21:50.87\00:21:52.67 You and I have seen it. 00:21:52.71\00:21:53.84 You can have this lethargy, really, 00:21:53.88\00:21:56.08 that comes over a person who just is so focused on 00:21:56.11\00:21:58.91 "what can I get out of the Bible?" 00:21:58.95\00:22:00.45 And, in fact, their spiritual life suffers. 00:22:00.48\00:22:03.49 They can be going to church meetings. 00:22:03.52\00:22:05.05 They can be watching all the It Is Written programs. 00:22:05.09\00:22:07.92 But it's not at the spiritual level where they could be 00:22:07.96\00:22:11.23 because they're not sharing. 00:22:11.26\00:22:12.39 >>John: Paul told Timothy to learn these things 00:22:12.43\00:22:14.40 and then teach them to others, so that they can teach others. 00:22:14.46\00:22:17.63 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:22:17.67\00:22:18.83 >>John: Yeah. So what would you say to that person who, 00:22:18.87\00:22:20.37 who maybe--and there's a, there's a massive amount 00:22:20.40\00:22:23.44 of people who've never shared their faith. 00:22:23.47\00:22:26.94 Never. 00:22:26.98\00:22:28.11 Never opened up the pages of the Bible with somebody, 00:22:28.14\00:22:29.81 never witnessed, 00:22:29.84\00:22:31.05 never invited someone to a, a church or religious service. 00:22:31.08\00:22:33.72 How do we help those people to become spiritually active 00:22:33.75\00:22:37.19 rather than spiritually obese? 00:22:37.22\00:22:39.59 >>Dr. DeRose: I think it begins with recognizing 00:22:39.62\00:22:41.92 Jesus' call for each one of us. 00:22:41.96\00:22:43.86 We're all called to be disciple-makers. 00:22:43.89\00:22:46.49 When we recognize that, it should change our prayer life. 00:22:46.53\00:22:49.43 Lord, how do You want me to fulfill that calling today? 00:22:49.46\00:22:54.17 Give me an opportunity. 00:22:54.20\00:22:55.24 Show me someone that I can encourage, 00:22:55.27\00:22:57.31 someone that I can share with. 00:22:57.34\00:22:58.67 >>John: I want to read that passage that you mentioned 00:22:58.71\00:23:00.54 because it's just, it's just so important. 00:23:00.58\00:23:02.68 In Matthew chapter 28, the great commission, 00:23:02.71\00:23:05.31 at the end of the chapter: 00:23:05.35\00:23:07.15 "Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, 00:23:07.18\00:23:09.05 'All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.'" 00:23:09.08\00:23:11.55 He said, "'Go therefore.'" 00:23:11.59\00:23:13.09 Go. You can't go and be inactive. 00:23:13.12\00:23:15.79 "'And make disciples of all nations, 00:23:15.82\00:23:18.09 baptizing them in the name of the Father 00:23:18.13\00:23:19.83 and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 00:23:19.86\00:23:22.36 teaching them to observe all things 00:23:22.40\00:23:24.10 that I have commanded you.'" 00:23:24.13\00:23:25.10 And then Jesus promises us His presence with us. 00:23:25.13\00:23:28.20 God has commissioned every one of us to be a disciple-maker. 00:23:28.24\00:23:31.44 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:23:31.47\00:23:32.51 >>John: And perhaps we are gifted in various ways, 00:23:32.54\00:23:34.58 and it seems to come more naturally to some 00:23:34.61\00:23:36.81 than to others. 00:23:36.85\00:23:37.48 But you can't say, 00:23:37.51\00:23:38.58 "Oh, sharing my faith is not my spiritual gift." 00:23:38.61\00:23:41.08 There's nothing to hide behind here. 00:23:41.12\00:23:42.92 God brings us into contact with people. 00:23:42.95\00:23:44.62 If we're prayerful and we're on the lookout, 00:23:44.65\00:23:47.06 we can find people to share our faith with. 00:23:47.09\00:23:49.99 And that's just good for us on a spiritual level. 00:23:50.03\00:23:52.79 Not just good for them, but good for us. 00:23:52.83\00:23:54.36 >>Dr. DeRose: It is, and the way this all comes full circle 00:23:54.40\00:23:56.67 is pray for someone who has needs like yours. 00:23:56.70\00:23:59.20 If you're trying to lose weight, 00:23:59.23\00:24:00.74 pray that God will bring you into contact 00:24:00.77\00:24:02.67 with someone else who needs to trim down, 00:24:02.70\00:24:05.44 and maybe that's a person not of your faith. 00:24:05.47\00:24:07.71 Maybe they don't know what you know spiritually. 00:24:07.74\00:24:09.91 But as you work together on your health, 00:24:09.94\00:24:12.15 it opens up doors for you to share your faith. 00:24:12.18\00:24:15.28 >>John: Doing something about destructive lifestyle habits 00:24:15.32\00:24:18.19 is an insurmountable problem for many people. 00:24:18.22\00:24:20.29 However, here's what we remember. 00:24:20.32\00:24:22.62 Jesus said, "I am with you always." 00:24:22.66\00:24:24.79 Paul wrote, 00:24:24.83\00:24:25.99 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." 00:24:26.03\00:24:29.36 And he wrote in the same chapter, Philippians chapter 4, 00:24:29.40\00:24:32.33 "My God shall supply all your need 00:24:32.37\00:24:34.90 according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." 00:24:34.94\00:24:37.21 So we don't want to be talking about righteousness by works 00:24:37.24\00:24:40.74 or health by works. 00:24:40.78\00:24:43.08 Everything we do we want to do in association 00:24:43.11\00:24:45.95 and cooperation with God, 00:24:45.98\00:24:47.68 who blesses you, who, who dwells in you, 00:24:47.72\00:24:51.29 and will work in you 00:24:51.32\00:24:52.29 "both to will and to do for His good pleasure." 00:24:52.32\00:24:54.82 So we would encourage you today: Take hold of the hand of God. 00:24:54.86\00:24:58.03 If you're looking at losing some pounds, 00:24:58.06\00:24:59.89 if you're looking at getting active, 00:24:59.93\00:25:01.30 if you're dealing with a lifestyle condition 00:25:01.33\00:25:03.37 that you know could be remedied or reversed, 00:25:03.40\00:25:07.10 simply by making some simple changes, 00:25:07.14\00:25:09.10 if you've never been able to make them, 00:25:09.14\00:25:10.47 you can go to God in prayer and say, 00:25:10.51\00:25:12.51 "This is what I need. 00:25:12.54\00:25:15.18 I am willing. Work in my life." 00:25:15.21\00:25:17.85 And Jesus says, "Ask and it shall be given. 00:25:17.88\00:25:22.32 Seek and you shall find." 00:25:22.35\00:25:24.22 So, if you have the knowledge in your head, 00:25:24.25\00:25:28.02 Christ in your heart, 00:25:28.06\00:25:29.89 it seems to me like you've got everything you need. 00:25:29.92\00:25:31.99 >>Dr. DeRose: You do, and, uh, all His biddings are enablings. 00:25:32.03\00:25:35.40 God will give you the power to make the changes 00:25:35.43\00:25:37.53 He impresses you to make. 00:25:37.57\00:25:39.33 >>John: We both know that God wants the very best for us. 00:25:40.67\00:25:43.37 But at times that can be a challenge. 00:25:43.41\00:25:46.31 What do you do about obesity? 00:25:46.34\00:25:48.44 How do you get your weight to where you want it to be, 00:25:48.48\00:25:50.21 or maybe where God wants it to be, 00:25:50.25\00:25:51.65 and keep it there? 00:25:51.68\00:25:53.28 I want you to get today's free offer, 00:25:53.31\00:25:54.52 a DVD addressing this issue of obesity. 00:25:54.55\00:25:57.29 It will help you. 00:25:57.32\00:25:58.99 Call us on 800-253-3000, 00:25:59.02\00:26:01.66 800-253-3000. 00:26:01.69\00:26:04.23 Or visit itiswritten.com. 00:26:04.26\00:26:07.23 >>John: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 00:26:10.60\00:26:12.93 is a faith-based ministry, 00:26:12.97\00:26:15.20 and it's your support that makes it possible 00:26:15.24\00:26:17.24 for us to share God's good news with the entire world. 00:26:17.27\00:26:21.11 Your tax-deductible gift 00:26:21.14\00:26:22.68 can be sent to the address on your screen, 00:26:22.71\00:26:24.81 or through our website, itiswritten.com. 00:26:24.85\00:26:28.92 Thank you for your continued prayerful support. 00:26:28.95\00:26:31.42 Our toll-free number is 800-253-3000, 00:26:31.45\00:26:34.99 800-253-3000. 00:26:35.02\00:26:37.19 Our web address is itiswritten.com. 00:26:37.23\00:26:40.06 >>John Bradshaw: Dr. David DeRose, 00:26:40.80\00:26:42.23 thanks for joining me today. 00:26:42.26\00:26:43.20 This has been fun.
