Happier life? 00:00:59.25\00:01:01.59 Healthier life? 00:01:01.62\00:01:02.89 Well, there are certain things that you can do 00:01:02.92\00:01:04.49 about all of those things. 00:01:04.53\00:01:06.19 And today I'm talking to a couple of very special guests, 00:01:06.23\00:01:08.66 doctors David DeRose and Greg Steinke, 00:01:08.70\00:01:11.70 coauthors of the book 00:01:11.73\00:01:13.20 "30 Days to Natural Blood Pressure Control." 00:01:13.23\00:01:16.44 Blood pressure--high blood pressure is a killer. 00:01:16.47\00:01:20.04 Doctors, thanks very much for joining me today. 00:01:20.08\00:01:22.28 >>Dr. Greg Steinke: Thank you for having us. 00:01:22.31\00:01:23.55 >>John: Dr. DeRose, how big a problem is high blood pressure? 00:01:23.58\00:01:25.75 >>Dr. David DeRose: It is a huge problem. 00:01:25.78\00:01:27.15 One billion people throughout the world 00:01:27.18\00:01:29.32 have high blood pressure. 00:01:29.35\00:01:30.69 The numbers are staggering in our country as well. 00:01:30.72\00:01:33.05 If you look at our lifetime, our life span, 00:01:33.09\00:01:35.49 about an 80 percent likelihood that any individual in the US 00:01:35.52\00:01:39.46 will develop high blood pressure. 00:01:39.49\00:01:40.76 >>John: Looking through the book, 00:01:40.80\00:01:41.56 I found a staggering number in here: 00:01:41.60\00:01:43.83 80,000 people succumb or die from natural disasters 00:01:43.87\00:01:47.10 around the world-- that's a lot. 00:01:47.14\00:01:48.64 >>Dr. DeRose: That's a lot of people. 00:01:48.67\00:01:49.64 >>John: It's a tragedy-- 00:01:49.67\00:01:50.84 9.4 million, more than a hundred times more, 00:01:50.87\00:01:54.28 die from high blood pressure. 00:01:54.31\00:01:56.75 It is a massive problem, isn't it? 00:01:56.78\00:01:58.18 >>Dr. DeRose: It's a huge problem, 00:01:58.21\00:01:59.38 and we've gotta do something about it, as a world. 00:01:59.41\00:02:01.85 >>John: Dr. Steinke, you're a family practice physician. 00:02:01.88\00:02:03.82 How many of the patients you see 00:02:03.85\00:02:06.02 are dealing with high blood pressure issues? 00:02:06.05\00:02:08.06 >>Dr. Greg Steinke: Every day we see multiple patients 00:02:08.09\00:02:09.92 who become so used to the problem that it, it, it-- 00:02:09.96\00:02:13.80 we think about it as part of our, uh, everyday, uh, aspect. 00:02:13.83\00:02:19.90 >>John: I mean, you think about this, right? 00:02:19.93\00:02:21.40 You meet someone with diabetes. "Yep, sure." 00:02:21.44\00:02:23.64 Heart issues? "Sure." 00:02:23.67\00:02:24.97 High blood pressure-- this is normal for people, 00:02:25.01\00:02:28.08 and we just accept it as part of everyday life. 00:02:28.11\00:02:32.01 Need we accept high blood pressure as the norm? 00:02:32.05\00:02:35.52 >>Dr. Steinke: People think, uh, that it, they feel fine with it, 00:02:35.55\00:02:38.65 and so they act like nothing's wrong. 00:02:38.69\00:02:42.82 And yet, uh, it comes and kills them eventually 00:02:42.86\00:02:46.33 through, uh, a process, uh, that's very sneaky. 00:02:46.36\00:02:50.40 >>John: Yeah, okay, so this is the silent killer; 00:02:50.43\00:02:52.30 we've referred to that before, 00:02:52.33\00:02:53.97 the silent killer, which is high blood pressure. 00:02:54.00\00:02:56.17 Now, uh, we've spoken before about this, Dr. DeRose, 00:02:56.20\00:02:59.57 you and I, uh, about some of the ways that people can treat 00:02:59.61\00:03:03.45 high blood pressure. 00:03:03.48\00:03:04.65 Medication is a viable way to treat high blood pressure, 00:03:04.68\00:03:07.98 except that...? 00:03:08.02\00:03:09.55 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, except for two things. 00:03:09.58\00:03:11.79 One, although it may be the first course-- 00:03:11.82\00:03:14.29 it may be the thing you need to do out of the box-- 00:03:14.32\00:03:16.56 you cannot lower your blood pressure enough with medications 00:03:16.59\00:03:20.26 to get the maximal benefit. 00:03:20.30\00:03:21.86 Once you get to around 130/80, somewhere in that range, 00:03:21.90\00:03:25.73 further lowering of blood pressure, for many people, 00:03:25.77\00:03:28.47 actually increases the risk of complications. 00:03:28.50\00:03:31.77 But you wanna get that blood pressure as low as possible 00:03:31.81\00:03:34.91 with natural therapies. 00:03:34.94\00:03:36.68 So natural therapies have the most power 00:03:36.71\00:03:39.48 to help us avoid the silent killer. 00:03:39.51\00:03:41.75 >>John: Dr. Steinke, what are some things that elevate 00:03:41.78\00:03:44.85 blood pressure, that some people might be surprised. 00:03:44.89\00:03:48.62 Well, really? That elevates my blood pressure? 00:03:48.66\00:03:51.03 Can you think of some of those things? 00:03:51.06\00:03:52.66 >>Dr. Steinke: Well, one really surprising thing in the research 00:03:52.69\00:03:55.13 is what actually happens in the womb. 00:03:55.16\00:03:58.50 Amazingly, as a mother is going through her pregnancy, 00:03:58.53\00:04:02.20 if she has a lot of stress--she goes through mental stress, 00:04:02.24\00:04:05.91 physical stress, emotional stress that's very strong, 00:04:05.94\00:04:09.64 a loss of a loved one, a death in the family, 00:04:09.68\00:04:12.75 if in the 28-week to 36-week continuum-- 00:04:12.78\00:04:16.75 that's where the kidneys are developing-- 00:04:16.79\00:04:19.25 that stress occurs, 00:04:19.29\00:04:20.92 that can affect the development of the kidney, 00:04:20.96\00:04:23.89 and the kidney has less nephrons that develop properly. 00:04:23.93\00:04:26.49 Nephrons--these are the filtering units 00:04:26.53\00:04:28.83 that push blood through to make urine. 00:04:28.86\00:04:33.00 And if there's less nephrons, as you go through life, 00:04:33.03\00:04:36.37 um, your blood pressure is eventually affected. 00:04:36.40\00:04:38.77 >>John: Now, does that mean, then, that a, 00:04:38.81\00:04:40.44 that a pregnant woman who has a loss in the family, 00:04:40.48\00:04:43.51 a parent who dies-- does this, 00:04:43.55\00:04:45.18 does this doom the unborn child to these complications? 00:04:45.21\00:04:47.98 >>Dr. DeRose: We wouldn't say "dooms," 00:04:48.02\00:04:49.65 but we definitely have things that are out of our control 00:04:49.68\00:04:53.12 that affect us, and to me, John, 00:04:53.15\00:04:54.46 it's so fascinating when we read the Bible, 00:04:54.49\00:04:56.76 that God often had special concern for pregnant women, 00:04:56.79\00:05:00.13 especially when God had a special plan. 00:05:00.16\00:05:02.00 I think of, uh, people like John the Baptist. 00:05:02.03\00:05:05.13 I think of, uh, Samson. 00:05:05.17\00:05:06.90 Special instruction, because that time of pregnancy, 00:05:06.94\00:05:10.11 the baby is being affected by what's happening to the mother. 00:05:10.14\00:05:13.61 >>John: There seems to be a science, or a branch of science, 00:05:13.64\00:05:16.71 that we're starting to learn more about what takes place 00:05:16.75\00:05:20.22 in the womb-- the prenatal influence. 00:05:20.25\00:05:22.12 That's, that's the real thing, isn't it? 00:05:22.15\00:05:23.65 >>Dr. Steinke: Absolutely. 00:05:23.69\00:05:24.75 We need to have special attention to pregnant moms. 00:05:24.79\00:05:28.16 We need to give pregnant moms, um, more room in jobs, etc. 00:05:28.19\00:05:33.03 so that they're not overstressed. 00:05:33.06\00:05:34.96 Whatever we can do as family members to support 00:05:35.00\00:05:37.10 a pregnant mother will do wonderful things for that baby. 00:05:37.13\00:05:40.70 >>John: Yeah, that's important. 00:05:40.74\00:05:42.30 Now, that's something that people might be surprised 00:05:42.34\00:05:46.31 raises blood pressure. 00:05:46.34\00:05:49.84 Well, let me turn that around before I ask you 00:05:49.88\00:05:51.41 about a specific chapter in the book. 00:05:51.45\00:05:53.55 What's something, Dr. DeRose, 00:05:53.58\00:05:54.95 that people might be surprised to learn lowers blood pressure? 00:05:54.98\00:05:58.22 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, it's your day-to-day eating habits. 00:05:58.25\00:06:00.26 A lot of people think, uh, some of this is just immaterial. 00:06:00.29\00:06:03.76 Most people have heard about the salt connection, 00:06:03.79\00:06:05.99 so they make that. 00:06:06.03\00:06:07.23 But they don't realize that there are a lot of other things 00:06:07.23\00:06:09.80 that we eat that raise blood pressure and, by contrast, 00:06:09.83\00:06:12.50 other things lower it. 00:06:12.53\00:06:13.70 Make it simple: Eat more plant foods, whole plant foods, 00:06:13.74\00:06:17.11 and you are going to have lower blood pressure. 00:06:17.14\00:06:19.21 Study after study has shown that. 00:06:19.24\00:06:20.81 >>John: Now, the chapter here-- I had it open a moment ago-- 00:06:20.84\00:06:22.54 "Eating Your Way to Lower Blood Pressure" 00:06:22.58\00:06:23.91 I think is the name of the chapter, 00:06:23.95\00:06:25.05 or something very similar-- it's very, very helpful. 00:06:25.08\00:06:27.55 Um, so, eat better; lower blood pressure. 00:06:27.58\00:06:31.15 But, how bad is it for me that I grab that hotdog 00:06:31.19\00:06:35.16 on the street corner, or the burger at lunch, uh, 00:06:35.19\00:06:39.69 several times during the week? 00:06:39.73\00:06:41.13 What does that really do to my blood pressure? 00:06:41.16\00:06:42.73 >>Dr. Steinke: You know, it was interesting-- 00:06:42.76\00:06:43.80 I had a patient; he was a marathon runner. 00:06:43.83\00:06:46.43 He was in great shape. He was only in his thirties. 00:06:46.47\00:06:48.97 But he'd come in, and his blood pressure was always 00:06:49.00\00:06:51.01 very, very high: 150s, 160s, uh, over 70s or 80s. 00:06:51.04\00:06:56.71 He was worried about his blood pressure. 00:06:56.75\00:06:58.88 He couldn't get it down. 00:06:58.91\00:06:59.78 He was trying to do everything right. 00:06:59.81\00:07:01.72 But he was eating too much meat. 00:07:01.75\00:07:03.75 He thought, oh, I'll just eat some red meat here and there, 00:07:03.79\00:07:06.25 no big deal; it's just part of my lifestyle. 00:07:06.29\00:07:08.49 But he was very sensitive. 00:07:08.52\00:07:09.69 As little as, uh, red meat as little as once a week 00:07:09.72\00:07:13.16 was raising his blood pressure. 00:07:13.19\00:07:14.73 Finally, he realized that this was the issue. 00:07:14.76\00:07:17.47 He cut it out completely. 00:07:17.50\00:07:18.70 His blood pressure went completely to normal. 00:07:18.73\00:07:20.97 >>John: Is it fair to say 00:07:21.00\00:07:23.14 most everyone would realize the same benefit, 00:07:23.17\00:07:25.97 or are some people predisposed to certain, uh, stimuli? 00:07:26.01\00:07:30.61 >>Dr. DeRose: We don't want to say "the same benefit," 00:07:30.65\00:07:32.71 because we're all unique, but definitely dietary change. 00:07:32.75\00:07:36.05 A review, in fact, of some 80 studies showed 00:07:36.08\00:07:38.72 that whether your blood pressure was normal 00:07:38.75\00:07:41.16 or whether it was elevated, 00:07:41.19\00:07:42.92 eating more plant foods-- substituting animal products 00:07:42.96\00:07:45.59 for plant foods, lowered the blood pressure. 00:07:45.63\00:07:48.13 >>John: Why are plant foods so powerful? 00:07:48.16\00:07:50.23 >>Dr. DeRose: There's a number of reasons. 00:07:50.27\00:07:51.57 My favorite one to talk about are natural compounds-- 00:07:51.60\00:07:54.94 we call them phytochemicals-- that are in plants. 00:07:54.97\00:07:57.44 We now know that among those phytochemicals 00:07:57.47\00:08:00.38 are ACE inhibitory peptides. 00:08:00.41\00:08:02.58 Now, the average person might say, "Well, who cares?" 00:08:02.61\00:08:05.18 But these compounds in plants are the same type of compounds 00:08:05.21\00:08:09.85 that are in prescription drugs. 00:08:09.88\00:08:11.79 So it's as if the Creator has said, 00:08:11.82\00:08:13.66 "Look, John, I don't want you to have high blood pressure. 00:08:13.69\00:08:16.46 Eat these foods that I gave to Adam and Eve in the garden, 00:08:16.49\00:08:19.46 and it will keep your blood pressure more normal." 00:08:19.49\00:08:21.60 >>John: Now, we go way back, and so-- 00:08:21.63\00:08:23.60 in fact, we three go way back, uh, so I know you're not cranky. 00:08:23.63\00:08:28.14 Uh, and you're not saying, uh, you got to become a, 00:08:28.17\00:08:31.71 uh, some kind of diet radical. 00:08:31.74\00:08:34.61 Although, not that we'd necessarily be against 00:08:34.64\00:08:37.18 somebody really fully embracing the very best health principles. 00:08:37.21\00:08:42.55 Tell me about the sort of incremental changes 00:08:42.58\00:08:44.55 a person can start to make in their diet to be-- 00:08:44.59\00:08:47.46 you spoke about one: eat--not eating red meat. 00:08:47.49\00:08:50.79 What are some other things that people can just do, 00:08:50.83\00:08:52.53 say, try this and see what happens? 00:08:52.56\00:08:55.03 >>Dr. Steinke: We really recommend 00:08:55.06\00:08:56.13 a progressive approach. 00:08:56.16\00:08:57.40 We realize that people can only do so much at one time. 00:08:57.43\00:09:00.44 Uh, fruits and vegetables, magnesium, potassium, calcium-- 00:09:00.47\00:09:04.14 these all have strong benefits for blood pressure. 00:09:04.17\00:09:07.88 So how can I as a person get more fruits and vegetables 00:09:07.91\00:09:11.58 into my diet, you know? 00:09:11.61\00:09:14.12 Can I bring them home more? Can I make smoothies? 00:09:14.15\00:09:17.49 What can I do to get my blood pressure down 00:09:17.52\00:09:21.09 with fruits and vegetables? 00:09:21.12\00:09:22.82 Can I replace certain foods that I'm eating 00:09:22.86\00:09:25.39 with more simple foods, like fruits and vegetables? 00:09:25.43\00:09:28.90 >>John: I think it's true-- 00:09:28.93\00:09:30.33 you know, we talk about the standard American diet-- 00:09:30.37\00:09:32.97 S-A-D, SAD, the SAD diet. 00:09:33.00\00:09:36.54 Well, let's be honest. 00:09:36.57\00:09:38.11 The average person's eating a pretty sad diet. 00:09:38.14\00:09:40.81 >>Dr. DeRose: You're right, John. 00:09:40.84\00:09:42.14 And what's interesting about your whole question 00:09:42.18\00:09:44.48 is we've got a graph in this book, 00:09:44.51\00:09:46.21 probably one of the most powerful graphs, 00:09:46.25\00:09:47.75 and I know it because-- 00:09:47.78\00:09:49.02 Greg has heard me tell this story before-- 00:09:49.05\00:09:50.72 but someone who had heard me present on this topic 00:09:50.75\00:09:53.36 came up to me once, some months after my lecture, 00:09:53.39\00:09:56.46 said, "Dr. DeRose, your lecture changed my whole life." 00:09:56.49\00:10:00.53 And I guess, you know, 00:10:00.56\00:10:01.73 it's possible I was tempted to become proud at that moment, 00:10:01.76\00:10:04.13 but the Lord immediately removed any opportunity 00:10:04.17\00:10:07.60 for me to be proud because he next said, 00:10:07.64\00:10:10.67 "But it was nothing you said." 00:10:10.71\00:10:12.14 >>John: [laughs] Oh, thank God for that. 00:10:12.17\00:10:13.51 All right. All right. 00:10:13.54\00:10:14.44 >>Dr. DeRose: And so I'm thinking, well, 00:10:14.48\00:10:15.71 how did my lecture change his life, if it's nothing I said? 00:10:15.74\00:10:18.08 He said, "It was that graph that you showed." 00:10:18.11\00:10:20.15 It's actually figure 5.3 in the book. 00:10:20.18\00:10:22.88 And what it shows is just where 00:10:22.92\00:10:24.32 your line of questioning is going. 00:10:24.35\00:10:26.12 If you get some of those red meats, 00:10:26.15\00:10:27.92 some of those animal products, out of the diet, 00:10:27.96\00:10:29.76 the research shows you'll lower your risk both of diabetes 00:10:29.79\00:10:32.83 and high blood pressure. 00:10:32.86\00:10:34.10 But the more you get rid of those animal products, 00:10:34.13\00:10:36.80 the lower and the lower and the lower the risk gets. 00:10:36.83\00:10:40.27 So, fascinating data that's out there. 00:10:40.30\00:10:42.40 Eat more of those plant foods; you'll get more magnesium, 00:10:42.44\00:10:44.87 more potassium, more ACE inhibitory peptides, 00:10:44.91\00:10:47.81 and your blood pressure will tend to be lower. 00:10:47.84\00:10:49.44 >>John: And you'll have life more abundantly, 00:10:49.48\00:10:51.95 which is what Jesus came into this world to give us. 00:10:51.98\00:10:54.58 There's more to cover. 00:10:54.62\00:10:55.58 We'll be right back with more in just a moment. 00:10:55.62\00:10:58.82 ¤[Music]¤ 00:10:58.85\00:11:06.19 >>John: So what do you do if you or somebody you care about 00:11:08.33\00:11:10.83 has high blood pressure? 00:11:10.87\00:11:12.53 Well, you don't do nothing. 00:11:12.57\00:11:13.80 There is something you can do. 00:16:15.64\00:16:18.77 >>Dr. DeRose: The responsible way is tell your physician. 00:16:18.81\00:16:20.81 Whoever's prescribing those medications should be involved 00:16:20.84\00:16:24.05 in that process. 00:16:24.08\00:16:25.28 And I'm typically, when I'm seeing those numbers 00:16:25.31\00:16:27.82 getting down, 120 or below, in most people, 00:16:27.85\00:16:31.15 we're starting to back off those medications. 00:16:31.19\00:16:34.29 >>John: We'll be back with more-- 00:16:34.32\00:16:36.26 more that can change your life in this world 00:16:36.29\00:16:38.83 and in the world to come-- in just a moment. 00:16:38.86\00:16:41.93 ¤[Music]¤ 00:16:41.96\00:16:49.17 ¤[Soft music]¤ 00:16:51.84\00:16:55.98 >>Man 1: What does the Bible say about astrology? 00:19:03.14\00:19:05.51 >>Dr. David DeRose: One group of toxins that we talk about 00:19:05.54\00:19:07.34 that is especially devastating are the heavy metals. 00:19:07.38\00:19:10.35 So whether it's lead, whether it's mercury, 00:19:10.38\00:19:12.41 whether it's cadmium, 00:19:12.45\00:19:13.82 many of these heavy metals raise blood pressure. 00:19:13.85\00:19:16.75 And the scary thing is many people are being exposed 00:19:16.79\00:19:19.59 to these in their typical dietary choices. 00:19:19.62\00:19:23.73 So we're being bombarded with toxins, 00:19:23.76\00:19:26.39 contributing to higher blood pressure, 00:19:26.43\00:19:28.36 and this is adding to the burden of suffering worldwide. 00:19:28.40\00:19:31.33 >>John: Now, we know to get lead out of our paint, 00:19:31.37\00:19:33.03 but how do we get lead or mercury out of our diet? 00:19:33.07\00:19:35.97 >>Dr. DeRose: The problem is most animal products 00:19:36.00\00:19:38.71 concentrate these toxins. 00:19:38.74\00:19:40.41 And unfortunately, one food that has some good constituents-- 00:19:40.44\00:19:44.01 that's fish--some of those fish have those omega-3 fats 00:19:44.05\00:19:47.42 that lower blood pressure and decrease inflammation. 00:19:47.45\00:19:50.59 Unfortunately, those same fish often concentrate toxins. 00:19:50.62\00:19:54.72 So the solution in the book and in our lectures, 00:19:54.76\00:19:57.56 we say don't go to the fish for the omega-3 fats; 00:19:57.59\00:20:00.90 go to the place where the fish got it, 00:20:00.93\00:20:02.93 and that is from plant sources of nutrition. 00:20:02.96\00:20:05.57 >>John: Now, um, another thing that I find fascinating 00:20:05.60\00:20:08.44 is that there are some supplements that you can take 00:20:08.47\00:20:10.81 that help lower, uh, blood pressure. 00:20:10.84\00:20:13.54 And it's--and we're not in the supplement business here, 00:20:13.58\00:20:15.64 but you are in the, in the business of giving good advice. 00:20:15.68\00:20:18.35 So what are some things that people can take, 00:20:18.38\00:20:20.32 uh, that would help with high blood pressure? 00:20:20.35\00:20:23.18 >>Dr. Greg Steinke: Um, the list, uh, that we looked at 00:20:23.22\00:20:25.09 was magnesium, coenzyme Q10, uh, omega-3, which we mentioned. 00:20:25.12\00:20:30.19 And one of my favorites is hibiscus tea. 00:20:30.23\00:20:32.66 Hibiscus is one of the most popular, uh, components 00:20:32.69\00:20:35.76 of herbal teas. 00:20:35.80\00:20:37.43 And hibiscus tea has a number of studies, 00:20:37.47\00:20:40.00 randomized trials, which are careful, controlled studies, 00:20:40.04\00:20:42.97 showing that hibiscus lowers blood pressure, 00:20:43.00\00:20:46.01 as strongly as medication. 00:20:46.04\00:20:48.01 >>John: As strongly as medication? 00:20:48.04\00:20:49.61 >>Dr. Steinke: That's correct. 00:20:49.64\00:20:50.45 >>John: Well, that's fascinating. 00:20:50.48\00:20:51.81 >>Dr. Steinke: So, three cups a day of hibiscus tea, um, 00:20:51.85\00:20:55.38 will lower your blood pressure as strongly as medication. 00:20:55.42\00:20:58.39 But one caution with that: 00:20:58.42\00:21:00.09 Make sure you rinse out your mouth 00:21:00.12\00:21:01.69 after you're finished drinking hibiscus tea. 00:21:01.72\00:21:03.79 You know why? 00:21:03.83\00:21:04.46 >>John: No, why? 00:21:04.49\00:21:05.69 >>Dr. Steinke: Because, um, it can be hard on the enamel. 00:21:05.73\00:21:08.20 >>John: Okay, well, that's good advice. 00:21:08.23\00:21:10.20 Now, you're both Christians. 00:21:10.23\00:21:11.47 Dr. DeRose, you're a minister of the gospel. 00:21:11.50\00:21:14.04 Uh, as you look into the Bible, 00:21:14.07\00:21:16.54 you find sort of a prescription in the Word of God-- 00:21:16.57\00:21:20.04 you, you've referred to this-- in the Beatitudes. 00:21:20.08\00:21:23.45 Walk us through some of these principles in the Beatitudes, 00:21:23.48\00:21:26.88 which talk about a relationship with God 00:21:26.92\00:21:29.52 and some of the lifestyle impacts that has 00:21:29.55\00:21:32.95 that deals with high blood pressure. 00:21:32.99\00:21:34.62 >>Dr. DeRose: It's, it's a fascinating chapter, 00:21:34.66\00:21:36.36 because, as Greg and I and Trudy, our other coauthor, 00:21:36.39\00:21:39.13 were praying about how do we present to people 00:21:39.16\00:21:41.76 across the spiritual spectrum what are spiritual principles 00:21:41.80\00:21:45.93 that can impact our blood pressure, 00:21:45.97\00:21:47.50 we were drawn to the Beatitudes. 00:21:47.54\00:21:49.10 And I'll give you an example. 00:21:49.14\00:21:50.47 As Jesus began that statement of blessings, 00:21:50.51\00:21:53.71 the introduction to His Sermon on the Mount, 00:21:53.74\00:21:55.64 He said, "Blessed are those who mourn." 00:21:55.68\00:21:59.58 That was very early-- the second beatitude. 00:21:59.61\00:22:01.48 >>John: Yeah. 00:22:01.52\00:22:02.42 >>Dr. DeRose: "Blessed," the first one, 00:22:02.45\00:22:03.49 "Blessed are the poor in spirit"--the first one. 00:22:03.52\00:22:06.15 You may say, poor in spirit, mourning? 00:22:06.19\00:22:08.16 This doesn't--how would this help blood pressure? 00:22:08.19\00:22:10.13 >>John: And those were very countercultural principles 00:22:10.16\00:22:12.36 in the context in which Jesus shared them. 00:22:12.39\00:22:14.20 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:22:14.23\00:22:15.43 But as we look at those, and we look at the next beatitude, 00:22:15.46\00:22:18.40 about "Blessed are the meek," 00:22:18.43\00:22:20.24 these--again, countercultural-- but all of them, they're, 00:22:20.27\00:22:23.51 they're basically helping us recognize our dependence, 00:22:23.54\00:22:27.34 recognize our need for God, humbling ourselves. 00:22:27.38\00:22:31.01 And we find that this is so important 00:22:31.05\00:22:33.05 in one of the elements that we spend a whole chapter 00:22:33.08\00:22:35.22 dealing with, and that is social support. 00:22:35.25\00:22:37.79 Because what we know about blood pressure is just like we found 00:22:37.82\00:22:40.92 with diabetes and heart disease and other conditions: 00:22:40.96\00:22:43.59 If you connect with other people, 00:22:43.63\00:22:45.69 and you make changes with other people, 00:22:45.73\00:22:47.66 you, in your church, have a group of people saying, 00:22:47.66\00:22:50.87 "We're gonna lower our blood pressure together," 00:22:50.90\00:22:53.13 that magnifies the impact. 00:22:53.17\00:22:55.14 But the only way that happens, John, optimally, 00:22:55.17\00:22:57.41 is if I'm humble enough to learn from other people. 00:22:57.44\00:23:00.51 If I'm coming down to someone else's level, if I'm meek, 00:23:00.54\00:23:03.28 if I'm submissive, if I'm repenting of my own sins, 00:23:03.31\00:23:06.98 if I'm mourning for my own shortcomings, 00:23:07.02\00:23:09.42 that's when this social support is maximized. 00:23:09.45\00:23:12.55 >>John: So in Matthew chapter 5, Dr. Steinke, 00:23:12.59\00:23:15.89 let me, let me run a couple of these blessings past you. 00:23:15.92\00:23:20.43 "Blessed are the merciful," verse 7, 00:23:20.46\00:23:23.16 "for they shall obtain mercy. 00:23:23.20\00:23:25.37 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 00:23:25.40\00:23:28.67 Blessed"--maybe this is an easy one-- 00:23:28.70\00:23:30.61 "Blessed are the peacemakers, 00:23:30.64\00:23:32.67 for they shall be called the sons of God." 00:23:32.71\00:23:34.54 Talk about heart health or, or, or high blood pressure health 00:23:34.58\00:23:37.98 in relation to that. 00:23:38.01\00:23:39.05 >>Dr. Steinke: One of the most important aspects, 00:23:39.08\00:23:40.82 I believe, is forgiveness. 00:23:40.85\00:23:42.88 "Blessed are the merciful"-- 00:23:42.92\00:23:43.95 people who are willing to extend, uh, an attitude 00:23:43.99\00:23:47.06 of forgiveness to those who hurt them. 00:23:47.09\00:23:49.56 Um, there's a study done by Dr. Dick Tibbits 00:23:49.59\00:23:52.53 in Florida Hospital--amazing research, an eight-week study, 00:23:52.56\00:23:56.06 where he took people who, many of them, had anger issues, 00:23:56.10\00:23:59.53 blood pressure issues, and he walked them through 00:23:59.57\00:24:02.07 a forgiveness, uh, training program. 00:24:02.10\00:24:05.04 And by the end, their blood pressures were down. 00:24:05.07\00:24:08.14 They had a notable improvement in their blood pressure. 00:24:08.18\00:24:11.31 Forgiveness, letting yourself, um, put, put forgiveness 00:24:11.35\00:24:17.32 on another person. 00:24:17.35\00:24:18.55 And also with God, um, asking God to forgive you 00:24:18.59\00:24:21.99 for your shortcomings 00:24:22.02\00:24:23.59 and letting that peace, uh, come into your heart; 00:24:23.63\00:24:26.70 that lowers the cortisol and the stress hormones in your body, 00:24:26.73\00:24:31.23 improving your blood pressure. 00:24:31.27\00:24:33.64 >>John: It's not always easy to accept: 00:24:33.67\00:24:35.17 the Bible says, "All things work together for good." 00:24:35.20\00:24:38.54 Ultimately, we, we've gotta trust God in the midst 00:24:38.57\00:24:40.81 of all things, don't we? 00:24:40.84\00:24:41.64 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:24:41.68\00:24:42.74 >>John: Trust Him. We don't always understand it. 00:24:42.78\00:24:44.41 Why did my loved one die? 00:24:44.45\00:24:45.61 Why am I wrestling with this illness? 00:24:45.65\00:24:47.42 If you see the big picture, it's still possible to trust God. 00:24:47.45\00:24:50.32 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:24:50.35\00:24:51.55 >>John: Okay, as we wrap up, just a couple of quick points, 00:24:51.59\00:24:53.36 something we haven't discussed about, uh, high blood pressure, 00:24:53.39\00:24:56.42 its connection to faith in God, its connection to good health, 00:24:56.46\00:24:58.79 spiritual health-- 00:24:58.83\00:24:59.86 what would you, what would you add as final words? 00:24:59.89\00:25:01.80 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, one thing I would say 00:25:01.83\00:25:03.13 is make sure that you know your blood pressure 00:25:03.16\00:25:06.70 and that you do something about it if it's elevated. 00:25:06.74\00:25:09.17 Just a simple motivational message. 00:25:09.20\00:25:11.27 >>John: Dr. Steinke? 00:25:11.31\00:25:12.47 >>Dr. Steinke: Absolutely. 00:25:12.51\00:25:13.54 You know, think about why you wanna be healthy. 00:25:13.58\00:25:17.15 Why, ultimately, do you wanna be healthy? 00:25:17.18\00:25:19.51 Whether it has religious and spiritual aspects to it-- 00:25:19.55\00:25:22.85 maybe it has everything to do with your grandchildren, 00:25:22.88\00:25:25.65 or your children, or, or the friends that you have. 00:25:25.69\00:25:30.13 Think about the deeper aspect 00:25:30.16\00:25:32.29 and use that as a motivator to change lifestyle behaviors. 00:25:32.33\00:25:36.43 >>John: Dr. Greg Steinke, Dr. David DeRose, 00:25:36.46\00:25:38.23 thanks so much for joining me today. 00:25:38.27\00:25:39.60 >>Dr. DeRose: Our privilege. 00:25:39.63\00:25:41.00 >>John: So what do you do if you or somebody you care about 00:25:41.84\00:25:44.61 has high blood pressure? 00:25:44.64\00:25:46.31 Well, you don't do nothing.
