>>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:19.98\00:00:21.68 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:00:21.72\00:00:24.79 When you open the Bible, 00:00:24.82\00:00:25.99 you come face to face with some stark realities. 00:00:26.02\00:00:29.22 The Bible says this in Romans 6 and verse 23. 00:00:29.26\00:00:32.59 It says, “The wages of sin is death,” 00:00:32.63\00:00:37.30 which tells us that sin is a killer. 00:00:37.33\00:00:41.84 It doesn't always look like a killer. 00:00:41.87\00:00:43.51 Sometimes it might look like your best friend. 00:00:43.54\00:00:46.11 But ultimately, sin is deadly. 00:00:46.14\00:00:49.81 Now, my guest today is Dr. David DeRose 00:00:49.84\00:00:51.91 from CompassHealth Consulting, 00:00:51.95\00:00:53.85 and we're going to talk about a silent killer. 00:00:53.88\00:00:56.72 Dr. DeRose, thanks for joining me today. 00:00:56.75\00:00:58.29 >>Dr. David DeRose: Great to be with you, John. 00:00:58.32\00:00:59.62 >>John: It's good to have you back. 00:00:59.65\00:01:00.89 Today there's a silent killer we're going to discuss, 00:01:00.92\00:01:03.09 and you talk about it in your new book, 00:01:03.12\00:01:04.93 “30 Days to Natural Blood Pressure Control.” 00:01:04.96\00:01:07.76 High blood pressure. 00:01:07.76\00:01:09.03 So here's my question: 00:01:09.06\00:01:10.50 We're here to talk about the Bible, 00:01:10.53\00:01:11.77 but on a Bible program we're talking about 00:01:11.80\00:01:13.77 high blood pressure, a health concern, a killer. 00:01:13.80\00:01:16.87 Why would we be talking about that on a spiritual, 00:01:16.91\00:01:20.34 biblically-based television program? 00:01:20.38\00:01:22.64 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, John, if it just killed people, 00:01:22.68\00:01:24.51 if it just took their life, that might be one thing. 00:01:24.55\00:01:27.18 But high blood pressure not only robs us of quality of life; 00:01:27.22\00:01:30.52 it can impair our central computer, our frontal lobe. 00:01:30.55\00:01:34.89 And as a result, the way the Holy Spirit 00:01:34.92\00:01:36.99 communicates with us is through our brain. 00:01:37.03\00:01:39.46 So if we're not taking care of that brain, 00:01:39.49\00:01:41.36 if it's being pounded with high blood pressure, 00:01:41.40\00:01:43.26 if we have a stroke, 00:01:43.30\00:01:44.47 if we have dementia contributed to by high blood pressure, 00:01:44.50\00:01:48.30 we are going to suffer in our spiritual life as well. 00:01:48.34\00:01:51.17 >>John: I'm reminded, too, the Bible says that our body 00:01:51.21\00:01:53.88 “is the temple of the Holy Spirit.” 00:01:53.91\00:01:55.68 We should be concerned from a spiritual point of view 00:01:55.71\00:01:59.51 about how we take care of the body temple, correct? 00:01:59.55\00:02:02.35 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:02:02.38\00:02:03.45 The other fascinating thing about the Holy Spirit 00:02:03.49\00:02:05.99 is the Holy Spirit gives us those fruits of the Spirit. 00:02:06.02\00:02:09.42 And we actually show in the book how those very fruits, 00:02:09.46\00:02:12.26 also embodied in Jesus' beatitudes, 00:02:12.29\00:02:15.23 those things like kindness and joy, 00:02:15.26\00:02:17.87 those things actually keep our blood pressure low. 00:02:17.90\00:02:20.77 So these things are intimately connected: 00:02:20.80\00:02:22.67 spirituality and physical health. 00:02:22.70\00:02:24.94 >>John: Today we're going to discover 00:02:24.97\00:02:26.21 how you can keep your blood pressure low; 00:02:26.24\00:02:28.98 if you have high blood pressure, 00:02:29.01\00:02:31.05 how you can lower that blood pressure, 00:02:31.08\00:02:32.81 how you can avoid getting high blood pressure; 00:02:32.85\00:02:35.05 in addition to that, a number of things very practical 00:02:35.08\00:02:38.82 that will be a blessing to you, to your life, and if not you, 00:02:38.85\00:02:42.32 then somebody you know who really needs this information. 00:02:42.36\00:02:45.59 Okay, what's, what's blood pressure? 00:02:45.63\00:02:48.53 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, it's surprising that many people, 00:02:48.56\00:02:50.40 even with high blood pressure, John, don't know what it is. 00:02:50.43\00:02:53.64 Blood pressure is simply the pressure 00:02:53.67\00:02:55.47 that's in your blood vessels. 00:02:55.50\00:02:57.31 So every time your heart pumps-- 00:02:57.34\00:02:59.54 and the heart pumps roughly, just to make it simple, 00:02:59.57\00:03:02.04 about once every second; that would be 60 beats a minute, 00:03:02.08\00:03:05.21 many people a little bit faster than that. 00:03:05.25\00:03:07.12 But the heart pumps; 00:03:07.15\00:03:08.55 it generates a surge of pressure into the arteries. 00:03:08.58\00:03:11.69 That highest pressure that is reached is called the systolic. 00:03:11.72\00:03:15.62 That's that upper number in the blood pressure. 00:03:15.66\00:03:18.36 Then the heart relaxes, 00:03:18.39\00:03:20.43 and when the heart relaxes, fully relaxes, 00:03:20.46\00:03:22.90 the lowest pressure in your blood vessel 00:03:22.93\00:03:25.73 is called the diastolic pressure. 00:03:25.77\00:03:27.77 And so we'll come up with something like 120 00:03:27.80\00:03:30.17 for the systolic, when the heart is pumping, 00:03:30.21\00:03:32.27 over 80, the lower number, the diastolic, 00:03:32.31\00:03:35.11 when the heart is resting. 00:03:35.14\00:03:36.38 >>John: What's a good blood pressure for someone to have? 00:03:36.41\00:03:38.95 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, this is a million-dollar question. 00:03:38.98\00:03:41.28 Physicians are still debating what that magic number is. 00:03:41.32\00:03:45.12 But let me tell you-- we'll cut right through, 00:03:45.15\00:03:46.96 through all the confusion. 00:03:46.99\00:03:48.82 In the book we show data, 00:03:48.86\00:03:51.23 sound data that shows if you're not on medication, 00:03:51.26\00:03:55.06 getting your blood pressure at least as low as 110 systolic 00:03:55.10\00:03:58.80 and 75 diastolic is optimal-- if you're not on medication. 00:03:58.83\00:04:03.71 >>John: Okay. So you mentioned medication. 00:04:03.74\00:04:05.91 Medication is one way to lower undesirably high blood pressure, 00:04:05.94\00:04:11.08 correct? 00:04:11.11\00:04:11.68 >>Dr. DeRose: Correct. 00:04:11.71\00:04:12.31 >>John: Okay. 00:04:12.35\00:04:13.42 Is that medication effective usually or ineffective? 00:04:13.45\00:04:16.75 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, it's an interesting question. 00:04:16.79\00:04:18.15 The medications themselves typically are effective. 00:04:18.19\00:04:21.06 But what we're finding as we look at the research 00:04:21.09\00:04:23.32 is if you follow people for just a year, many of them, 00:04:23.36\00:04:27.20 with some of the blood pressure drugs, 00:04:27.23\00:04:28.96 only 1 out of 4 people 00:04:29.00\00:04:30.50 keep taking that drug for a full year. 00:04:30.53\00:04:32.80 >>John: Well, why would people stop? 00:04:32.83\00:04:34.14 >>Dr. DeRose: Because of the side effects. 00:04:34.17\00:04:36.10 >>John: Okay. What are some of the side effects? 00:04:36.14\00:04:38.04 >>Dr. DeRose: Some common side effects 00:04:38.07\00:04:39.41 of common blood pressure drugs: 00:04:39.44\00:04:41.01 frequent urination, cough, chronic cough, 00:04:41.04\00:04:46.05 decreased energy level, decreased sexual performance, 00:04:46.08\00:04:51.32 depression. 00:04:51.35\00:04:53.25 I mean, the list is a staggering one, and people are impacted. 00:04:53.29\00:04:57.49 I've seen patients who've gone, before coming to my office, 00:04:57.53\00:05:00.83 gone to one drug after another after another, because, 00:05:00.86\00:05:04.40 "Hey, I felt fine, doctor, 00:05:04.43\00:05:06.80 but then they told me I had high blood pressure, 00:05:06.84\00:05:08.64 and now I'm having all these side effects from the drugs." 00:05:08.67\00:05:12.61 >>John: So, then, we want to be able to get our blood pressure 00:05:12.64\00:05:15.01 under control, keep it under control. 00:05:15.04\00:05:17.58 And I think anyone would agree, I really do-- 00:05:17.61\00:05:20.08 I don't think this is alarmist or anti-medicine. 00:05:20.12\00:05:24.05 You're not anti-medicine, are you? 00:05:24.09\00:05:25.39 >>Dr. DeRose: Oh, most definitely not. 00:05:25.42\00:05:26.65 >>John: Okay, I don't think it's anti-medicine to say, 00:05:26.69\00:05:28.52 let's try to live without medications 00:05:28.56\00:05:31.93 that you don't need to take. 00:05:31.96\00:05:33.83 First, it makes good financial sense. 00:05:33.86\00:05:35.96 It has to make good physical sense. 00:05:36.00\00:05:37.80 And if you can avoid, uh, undesirable side effects, 00:05:37.83\00:05:41.67 you're just a whole lot better off. 00:05:41.70\00:05:43.10 So, let's drill down. 00:05:43.14\00:05:45.37 How do we get our blood pressure down if it's up too high? 00:05:45.41\00:05:47.78 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, sometimes the first step is medication, 00:05:47.81\00:05:50.51 just to pick up on your last comment. 00:05:50.55\00:05:52.38 If your pressure is 220 over 120, you know, look it. 00:05:52.41\00:05:55.68 I don't care what you do in this book-- 00:05:55.72\00:05:57.22 it's not going to get your pressure down 00:05:57.25\00:05:58.59 to 110 over 70 in a day. 00:05:58.62\00:06:00.96 And when you're running those 220 over 120 numbers, 00:06:00.99\00:06:03.93 you are bombarding your body, and you're at risk for a stroke. 00:06:03.96\00:06:07.03 >>John: Okay, let me ask this. 00:06:07.10\00:06:08.06 I asked a question that I'm now putting on hold. 00:06:08.10\00:06:11.17 Uh, what are the dangers of high blood pressure? 00:06:11.20\00:06:14.87 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, the dangers, one that I've mentioned 00:06:14.90\00:06:16.30 several times is stroke. 00:06:16.34\00:06:18.07 And, uh, stroke is not just a killer; it's a crippler. 00:06:18.11\00:06:21.44 And, uh, and it, not just is a crippler, 00:06:21.48\00:06:23.24 but can impair our cognitive abilities. 00:06:23.28\00:06:26.11 Then there's heart attack. There's kidney failure. 00:06:26.15\00:06:28.88 There is blindness. 00:06:28.92\00:06:30.29 There is bulging of the blood vessels that can rupture; 00:06:30.32\00:06:32.82 we call it aneurysms. 00:06:32.85\00:06:34.22 All of these are on that list, 00:06:34.26\00:06:35.72 and dementia is on the list as well. 00:06:35.76\00:06:37.99 >>John: Most people, I think, would say, 00:06:38.03\00:06:39.76 "Oh, that will never happen to me." 00:06:39.79\00:06:42.00 >>Dr. DeRose: Of course. And, uh, then it happens. 00:06:42.03\00:06:44.80 And then it's too late. 00:06:44.83\00:06:46.17 So the whole message is, 00:06:46.20\00:06:47.30 you've got to be serious about this silent killer. 00:06:47.34\00:06:49.80 >>John: This is something really where you need 00:06:49.84\00:06:51.41 to be a little proactive, correct? 00:06:51.44\00:06:53.11 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:06:53.14\00:06:54.01 And here's the shocking thing, John. 00:06:54.04\00:06:55.64 Even if a person does not have blood pressure today, 00:06:55.68\00:06:58.05 in the prime of life, in their 50s, early 60s, 00:06:58.08\00:07:00.58 no high blood pressure, 00:07:00.62\00:07:01.85 the data indicates that if you live into your 80s, 00:07:01.88\00:07:04.65 90 percent of people in those younger years 00:07:04.69\00:07:08.66 will develop high blood pressure. 00:07:08.69\00:07:10.83 We've all got to be concerned about it. 00:07:10.86\00:07:12.79 >>John: Okay. 00:10:34.46\00:10:38.47 >>Dr. DeRose: One of the things that is often neglected 00:10:38.50\00:10:40.74 in our environment is a, a kind of twins: 00:10:40.77\00:10:44.24 rest and stress management. 00:10:44.27\00:10:46.81 We devote separate sections in the book to both of these. 00:10:46.84\00:10:50.05 But we find today, especially as we talk about this interface 00:10:50.08\00:10:53.08 between spirituality and physical health, 00:10:53.11\00:10:56.52 that many people are either cutting themselves short 00:10:56.55\00:10:59.02 on rest, or they're becoming overly stressed. 00:10:59.05\00:11:02.12 And it's amazing to me, from those dual perspectives 00:11:02.16\00:11:05.43 of minister and physician, 00:11:05.46\00:11:07.03 to realize the Bible has strategies-- 00:11:07.10\00:11:09.40 both Jesus offering His rest, 00:11:09.43\00:11:12.00 Jesus offering us stress management: 00:11:12.03\00:11:13.90 “My peace I give to you; my peace I leave with you.” 00:11:13.94\00:11:16.54 So these beautiful biblical truths actually interface 00:11:16.57\00:11:20.41 with an optimal approach to high blood pressure. 00:11:20.44\00:11:22.74 >>John: How much rest should a person be getting? 00:11:22.78\00:11:24.65 >>Dr. DeRose: If you look at the statistics, 00:11:24.68\00:11:26.08 the average person does best 00:11:26.11\00:11:27.55 with about eight hours of sleep a night. 00:11:27.58\00:11:29.35 >>John: And the average person is getting 00:11:29.38\00:11:30.82 about how many hours of sleep? 00:11:30.85\00:11:32.15 >>Dr. DeRose: It's less than that. 00:11:32.19\00:11:33.15 And unfortunately, many of us think 00:11:33.19\00:11:35.26 because we can drive ourselves, we don't need that much rest. 00:11:35.29\00:11:39.23 I was under that delusion for a period of time in my life, John. 00:11:39.26\00:11:42.46 And the interesting thing, if you're driving yourself, 00:11:42.50\00:11:45.00 even if you're not using caffeine--and let's face it; 00:11:45.03\00:11:47.44 most people that are pushing themselves 00:11:47.47\00:11:48.90 are resorting to caffeine. 00:11:48.94\00:11:50.47 The way those things work 00:11:50.51\00:11:51.84 is they ramp up the stress hormones, 00:11:51.87\00:11:54.11 which ramps up the blood pressure. 00:11:54.14\00:11:57.31 >>John: Energy drinks have really pushed caffeine 00:11:57.35\00:11:59.48 out onto the front line now. 00:11:59.51\00:12:01.32 Do people know the dangers inherent in using those things, 00:12:01.35\00:12:03.95 do you think? 00:12:03.99\00:12:05.05 >>Dr. DeRose: It's obvious to me they don't. 00:12:05.09\00:12:05.95 Caffeine is a pressor; 00:12:05.99\00:12:07.52 that means it does raise blood pressure. 00:12:07.56\00:12:09.66 It makes the blood more sticky. 00:12:09.69\00:12:11.89 It actually does a host of things 00:12:11.93\00:12:14.20 that really are undesirable, 00:12:14.20\00:12:15.63 but it raises vigilance, especially if you're fatigued. 00:12:15.66\00:12:20.80 But it's at a price. 00:12:20.84\00:12:21.80 It's not really giving you energy; 00:12:21.84\00:12:23.27 it's just whipping the body. 00:12:23.30\00:12:24.41 >>John: So people press themselves. 00:12:24.44\00:12:26.04 Maybe they use caffeine. They go, go, go. 00:12:26.07\00:12:28.51 I read recently about someone who says, 00:12:28.54\00:12:30.08 “I get by on four hours sleep a night.” 00:12:30.11\00:12:32.01 There's a price to pay for that, though, isn't there? 00:12:32.05\00:12:33.75 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely, 00:12:33.78\00:12:34.98 and I can guarantee you that person cutting themselves short 00:12:35.02\00:12:37.35 on sleep is worsening how insulin works in the body, 00:12:37.39\00:12:40.52 raising stress hormone levels, and raising blood pressure, 00:12:40.56\00:12:43.46 whether or not they have full-blown hypertension 00:12:43.49\00:12:45.93 today or not. 00:12:45.96\00:12:47.10 >>John: Hmm. Okay, so, uh, what do you say to somebody 00:12:47.13\00:12:50.93 who's not getting enough rest? 00:12:50.97\00:12:52.20 You say, "Get more rest," but they don't. 00:12:52.23\00:12:55.37 Uh, simple question: How does somebody get more rest? 00:12:55.40\00:12:58.84 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, there's a lot of strategies. 00:12:58.87\00:13:00.21 We actually go through a whole chapter in the book 00:13:00.24\00:13:02.01 dealing with this. 00:13:02.04\00:13:03.08 One of the simple strategies 00:13:03.11\00:13:04.35 that not everyone is ready for yet, 00:13:04.38\00:13:06.92 but it's actually called throwing away the alarm clock. 00:13:06.95\00:13:09.92 And, uh, if you do that, it puts a little burden on you 00:13:09.95\00:13:12.99 to get to bed early enough that you can wake up in time. 00:13:13.02\00:13:17.33 >>John: Yeah, I don't think everybody's ready for that. 00:13:17.36\00:13:19.06 What's something everybody's ready for? 00:13:19.09\00:13:20.46 >>Dr. DeRose: If you're not ready to get rid 00:13:20.50\00:13:21.86 of the alarm clock, 00:13:21.90\00:13:23.06 at least start dialing back the time when you go to bed 00:13:23.10\00:13:26.87 and taking time to wind down-- 00:13:26.90\00:13:29.07 biblical study, watching It Is Written-- 00:13:29.10\00:13:31.64 some great things you can do before going to bed. 00:13:31.67\00:13:33.58 >>John: Amen. I could agree with that. 00:13:33.61\00:13:35.31 Okay, so rest is important in lowering blood pressure. 00:13:35.34\00:13:37.81 Get more rest. 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.22 That's something everyone can do. 00:13:40.25\00:13:43.32 What else? 00:13:43.35\00:13:44.62 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, let's talk a little bit more 00:13:44.65\00:13:45.82 about the stress side of the equation. 00:13:45.85\00:13:48.79 The analogy we use in the book to try to make it 00:13:48.82\00:13:51.09 a little bit more graphic-- 00:13:51.13\00:13:52.06 I mean, stress often seems a bit nebulous. 00:13:52.09\00:13:54.36 So we say, imagine walking into your bedroom 00:13:54.36\00:13:57.30 and finding a ravenous lion waiting for you. 00:13:57.33\00:14:00.77 >>John: That would be stressful. 00:14:00.80\00:14:02.20 >>Dr. DeRose: What do you do if there's a lion in the bedroom? 00:14:02.24\00:14:05.01 You can ignore it. You can run from it. 00:14:05.04\00:14:07.58 You can fight it. 00:14:07.61\00:14:08.84 And we use this as an analogy for how we deal with stressors. 00:14:08.88\00:14:12.01 Some stressors we do need to eliminate. 00:14:12.05\00:14:14.62 >>John: Is it, is it easy to know which ones, 00:14:14.65\00:14:16.58 do you think? 00:14:16.62\00:14:17.82 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, this is where spiritual discernment 00:14:17.85\00:14:19.22 comes in, John. 00:14:19.25\00:14:20.39 You know, a lot of people underestimate 00:14:20.42\00:14:22.12 how important prayer is. 00:14:22.16\00:14:24.06 Uh, one of the routine things I do in my medical practice 00:14:24.09\00:14:26.96 is pray with patients, if they're receptive to that. 00:14:27.00\00:14:29.96 Because I believe that God can guide us 00:14:30.00\00:14:32.83 in making these important decisions. 00:14:32.87\00:14:34.80 >>John: Right. Okay, so, get a little more rest. 00:14:34.84\00:14:38.41 Eliminate stressors out of your life. 00:14:38.44\00:14:41.61 Okay. Those are fairly straightforward things 00:14:41.64\00:14:45.31 that a person can do. 00:14:45.35\00:14:46.61 Let's keep on going down through the list of things 00:14:46.65\00:14:48.55 that people can do to lower their blood pressure 00:14:48.58\00:14:51.29 and therefore lower their risk 00:14:51.32\00:14:52.85 of some catastrophic health event. 00:14:52.89\00:14:55.32 >>Dr. DeRose: Let's talk about one that many people, 00:14:55.36\00:14:57.36 uh, their eyes kind of gloss over when we speak about this. 00:14:57.39\00:14:59.93 We say, "Refraining from pressors." 00:14:59.96\00:15:03.43 A lot of people say, "Well, what is a pressor?" 00:15:03.47\00:15:05.80 It's something that raises blood pressure. 00:15:05.83\00:15:07.67 >>John: And they would be drugs such as...? 00:15:07.70\00:15:09.07 >>Dr. DeRose: They'd be drugs like Advil, like Nuprin, 00:15:09.10\00:15:11.94 like Motrin, ibuprofen, Naprosyn, 00:15:11.97\00:15:15.38 these common pain-relieving medications, 00:15:15.41\00:15:17.88 many of them available over the counter. 00:15:17.91\00:15:20.82 These drugs actually can raise blood pressure in some people 00:15:20.85\00:15:23.75 as much as 10 or 15 points. 00:15:23.79\00:15:25.92 >>John: Do you have to consume a lot of that medication 00:15:25.95\00:15:28.32 in order to get, see the blood pressure spike? 00:15:28.36\00:15:29.82 >>Dr. DeRose: You don't have to consume a lot. 00:15:29.86\00:15:31.36 If you're sensitive to these medications, 00:15:31.39\00:15:33.50 they can be driving your blood pressure up. 00:15:33.53\00:15:35.86 >>John: Can a person find out if there's a sensitivity? 00:15:35.90\00:15:37.97 How do we know about this? 00:15:38.00\00:15:38.93 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, one simple way to do it 00:15:38.97\00:15:40.37 is just check your blood pressure more. 00:15:40.40\00:15:42.57 If you find a day when you're not taking these medications 00:15:42.60\00:15:45.11 your pressure is running 140 over 80, 00:15:45.14\00:15:47.51 and the next day when you're taking the medication, 00:15:47.54\00:15:49.54 it's running 155 over 95, you can make the connection. 00:15:49.58\00:15:54.32 >>John: And that 15-point spike, 00:15:54.35\00:15:57.45 that's sufficient enough to stay away from? What can you commit to? 00:20:16.28\00:20:18.98 If someone can only commit to five minutes of exercise a day, 00:20:19.01\00:20:22.32 there's actually research showing 00:20:22.35\00:20:24.19 that as little as 30 minutes of exercise a week 00:20:24.22\00:20:27.66 can measurably lower your blood pressure. 00:20:27.69\00:20:29.46 >>John: So start where you are and do what you can? 00:22:54.77\00:22:57.71 >>Dr. DeRose: Actually, if you look at the research, 00:22:57.74\00:22:59.21 research shows that when we fellowship 00:22:59.24\00:23:01.21 with others in church community, we have less hospitalizations. 00:23:01.24\00:23:06.28 We're hospitalized for a shorter duration 00:23:06.31\00:23:08.15 if we end in the, up in the hospital. 00:23:08.18\00:23:09.98 We live longer. 00:23:10.02\00:23:11.39 Our blood pressure tends to be lower. 00:23:11.42\00:23:13.36 And it's not just that corporate worship. 00:23:13.39\00:23:15.82 It's also our intrinsic spirituality: 00:23:15.86\00:23:18.76 taking time for prayer, taking time for a devotional life. 00:23:18.79\00:23:22.26 In fact, some of the research suggests that 00:23:22.30\00:23:24.57 private relationship with our Creator is the most powerful. 00:23:24.60\00:23:30.47 >>John: When you think of high blood pressure, 00:23:30.51\00:23:32.31 well, that word says it all: pressure. 00:23:32.34\00:23:34.58 If you have high blood pressure, 00:23:34.61\00:23:35.91 it seems to me you're under pressure somewhere, 00:23:35.94\00:23:38.65 or your body's under pressure. 00:23:38.68\00:23:40.72 And the Bible is all about 00:23:40.75\00:23:42.15 coming into relationship with God and having that, 00:23:42.18\00:23:45.79 that pressure take away, taken away, or that pressure borne, 00:23:45.82\00:23:49.42 carried by Jesus. 00:23:49.46\00:23:50.99 What does He say? 00:23:51.03\00:23:52.19 “Come to me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, 00:23:52.23\00:23:54.46 and I will give you rest.” 00:23:54.50\00:23:57.57 In the Ten Commandments, 00:23:57.60\00:23:58.67 the fourth commandment deals with Sabbath rest, 00:23:58.70\00:24:01.40 something many people have forgotten about or neglected. 00:24:01.44\00:24:04.71 There's something about a relationship with Jesus 00:24:04.74\00:24:07.11 that is designed to see our stressors roll away. 00:24:07.14\00:24:12.48 Jesus came that He would give us life--John 10, verse 10-- 00:24:12.51\00:24:16.15 and give it “more abundantly.” 00:24:16.18\00:24:19.15 So you've seen both sides of this, 00:24:19.19\00:24:20.59 as a minister of the gospel and as a physician. 00:24:20.62\00:24:23.06 Faith in Christ ultimately, 00:24:23.09\00:24:25.03 if entered into with both eyes open, 00:24:25.06\00:24:28.00 is the prescription for a healthy life in this world 00:24:28.03\00:24:30.90 and in the world to come. 00:24:30.93\00:24:32.10 >>Dr. DeRose: There's no question. It's so powerful. 00:24:32.13\00:24:33.47 And you mentioned the Sabbath. 00:24:33.50\00:24:34.90 We have actually research in the book from the Ansons in Israel, 00:24:34.94\00:24:38.31 actually showing that the Sabbath 00:24:38.34\00:24:39.97 has health-giving benefits. 00:24:40.01\00:24:41.88 >>John: There is life in Jesus Christ. 00:24:41.91\00:24:44.01 God made us. 00:24:44.05\00:24:45.15 The Bible says we are fearfully and wonderfully made. 00:24:45.18\00:24:48.92 And as you benefit physically, 00:24:48.95\00:24:52.05 you will benefit and thrive spiritually as well. 00:24:52.09\00:24:56.49 We only get one go-around on this planet. 00:24:56.52\00:24:59.19 I think it's just wisdom, isn't it, 00:24:59.23\00:25:00.96 to think about what you can do to get the most 00:25:00.96\00:25:03.10 out of your time here, not just in a self-centered way, 00:25:03.13\00:25:06.00 but the better you do, 00:25:06.03\00:25:07.30 the more service and the more faithful service 00:25:07.34\00:25:09.14 you can do to God and others also. 00:25:09.17\00:25:11.17 >>Dr. DeRose: You got it right on, John. 00:25:11.21\00:25:12.64 >>John: There you go. 00:25:12.67\00:25:13.88 Dr. David DeRose, thanks so very much for joining me today. 00:25:13.91\00:25:15.98 I appreciate it. 00:25:16.01\00:25:17.18 Your book, “30 Days to Natural Blood Pressure Control,” 00:25:17.21\00:25:19.75 it is magnificent. 00:25:19.78\00:25:21.35 I know this is going to be a successful book, 00:25:21.38\00:25:22.82 and the principles in here, 00:25:22.85\00:25:23.62 some of which we have shared today, 00:25:23.65\00:25:25.62 will be the difference between life and death for many. 00:25:25.65\00:25:29.66 Grab ahold of what God is sharing with you today 00:25:29.69\00:25:32.46 and enjoy more life, longer life, healthier life 00:25:32.49\00:25:35.50 and rejoice more in your friend and Savior, Jesus Christ.” 00:25:35.53\00:25:38.93 ¤[Music]¤ 00:25:38.97\00:25:45.34 >>John: So what do you do if you or somebody you care about 00:25:48.71\00:25:51.01 has high blood pressure? 00:25:51.05\00:25:52.71 Well, you don't do nothing. 00:25:52.75\00:25:54.05 There is something you can do.
