¤[Theme music] 00:01:29.98\00:01:40.03 ¤[Theme music] 00:01:40.03\00:01:47.17 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:01:50.11\00:01:51.81 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:01:51.84\00:01:54.91 When you open the Bible, 00:01:54.94\00:01:56.11 you come face to face with some stark realities. 00:01:56.14\00:01:59.35 The Bible says this in Romans 6 and verse 23. 00:01:59.38\00:02:02.78 It says, “The wages of sin is death,” 00:02:02.82\00:02:07.52 which tells us that sin is a killer. 00:02:07.56\00:02:11.79 It doesn't always look like a killer. 00:02:11.83\00:02:13.73 Sometimes it might look like your best friend. 00:02:13.76\00:02:16.30 But ultimately, sin is deadly. 00:02:16.33\00:02:20.00 Now, my guest today is Dr. David DeRose 00:02:20.04\00:02:22.10 from CompassHealth Consulting, 00:02:22.14\00:02:24.04 and we're going to talk about a silent killer. 00:02:24.07\00:02:26.91 Dr. DeRose, thanks for joining me today. 00:02:26.94\00:02:28.74 >>Dr. DeRose: Great to be with you, John. 00:02:28.78\00:02:29.81 >>John: It's good to have you back. 00:02:29.84\00:02:30.95 Today there's a silent killer we're going to discuss, 00:02:30.98\00:02:33.21 and you talk about it in your new book, 00:02:33.25\00:02:35.05 “30 Days to Natural Blood Pressure Control.” 00:02:35.08\00:02:37.89 High Blood Pressure. 00:02:37.92\00:02:39.19 So here's my question: 00:02:39.22\00:02:40.66 We're here to talk about the Bible, 00:02:40.69\00:02:41.92 but on a Bible program we're talking about 00:02:41.96\00:02:43.63 high blood pressure, 00:02:43.66\00:02:45.03 a health concern, 00:02:45.06\00:02:46.06 a killer. 00:02:46.09\00:02:47.13 Why would we be talking about that on a spiritual, 00:02:47.13\00:02:50.47 biblically based television program? 00:02:50.50\00:02:52.77 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, John, if it just killed people, 00:02:52.80\00:02:54.64 if it just took their life, that might be one thing. 00:02:54.67\00:02:57.31 But high blood pressure not only robs of quality of life; 00:02:57.34\00:03:00.71 it can impair our central computer, our frontal lobe. 00:03:00.74\00:03:05.08 And as a result, the way the Holy Spirit 00:03:05.11\00:03:07.18 communicates with us is through our brain. 00:03:07.22\00:03:09.65 So if we're not taking care of that brain, 00:03:09.68\00:03:11.59 if it's being pounded with high blood pressure, 00:03:11.62\00:03:13.49 if we have a stroke, 00:03:13.52\00:03:14.69 if we have dementia contributed to by high blood pressure, 00:03:14.72\00:03:18.53 we are going to suffer in our spiritual life as well. 00:03:18.56\00:03:21.36 >>John: I'm reminded too, the Bible says that our body 00:03:21.40\00:03:24.07 “is the temple of the Holy Spirit.” 00:03:24.10\00:03:25.87 We should be concerned from a spiritual point of view 00:03:25.90\00:03:29.70 about how we take care of the body temple, correct? 00:03:29.74\00:03:32.47 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:03:32.51\00:03:33.58 The other fascinating thing about the Holy Spirit 00:03:33.61\00:03:36.11 is the Holy Spirit gives us those fruits of the spirit. 00:03:36.14\00:03:39.55 And we actually show in the book how those very fruits, 00:03:39.58\00:03:42.38 also embodied in Jesus' beatitude, 00:03:42.42\00:03:45.39 those things like kindness and joy, 00:03:45.42\00:03:48.02 those things actually keep our blood pressure low. 00:03:48.06\00:03:50.93 So these things are intimately connected: 00:03:50.96\00:03:52.83 spirituality and physical health. 00:03:52.86\00:03:55.06 >>John: Today we're going to discover how 00:03:55.10\00:03:56.53 you can keep your blood pressure low; 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.10 if you have high blood pressure, 00:03:59.13\00:04:01.24 how you can lower that blood pressure. 00:04:01.27\00:04:03.00 How you can avoid getting high blood pressure. 00:04:03.04\00:04:05.24 In addition to that, a number of things very practical 00:04:05.27\00:04:09.01 that will be a blessing to you, to your life, and if not you, 00:04:09.04\00:04:12.51 then somebody you know who really needs this information. 00:04:12.55\00:04:15.78 Okay, what's, what's blood pressure? 00:04:15.82\00:04:18.42 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, it's surprising that many people, 00:04:18.45\00:04:20.62 even with high blood pressure, John, don't know what it is. 00:04:20.66\00:04:23.86 Blood pressure is simply the pressure 00:04:23.89\00:04:25.69 that's in your blood vessels. 00:04:25.73\00:04:27.30 So every time your heart pumps, 00:04:27.30\00:04:29.73 and the heart pumps roughly, just to make it simple, 00:04:29.76\00:04:32.17 about once every second, that would be 60 beats a minute, 00:04:32.20\00:04:35.34 many people a little bit faster than that. 00:04:35.37\00:04:37.24 But the heart pumps, 00:04:37.27\00:04:38.67 it generates a surge of pressure into the arteries, 00:04:38.71\00:04:41.81 that highest pressure that is reached is called the systolic. 00:04:41.84\00:04:45.75 That's that upper number in the blood pressure. 00:04:45.78\00:04:48.48 Then the heart relaxes, 00:04:48.52\00:04:50.55 and when the heart relaxes, fully relaxes, 00:04:50.59\00:04:53.05 the lowest pressure in your blood pressure 00:04:53.09\00:04:55.62 is called the diastolic pressure. 00:04:55.66\00:04:57.73 And so we'll come up with something like 00:04:57.76\00:04:59.33 120 for the systolic, when the heart is pumping, 00:04:59.36\00:05:02.46 over 80, the lower number, the diastolic, 00:05:02.50\00:05:05.30 when the heart is resting. 00:05:05.33\00:05:06.53 >>John: What's a good blood pressure for someone to have? 00:05:06.57\00:05:09.14 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, this is a million-dollar question. 00:05:09.17\00:05:11.27 Physicians are still debating what that magic number is. 00:05:11.31\00:05:15.31 But let me tell you, we'll cut right through all, 00:05:15.34\00:05:17.15 through all the confusion. 00:05:17.18\00:05:19.01 In the book we show data, 00:05:19.05\00:05:21.42 sound data that shows if you're not on medication, 00:05:21.45\00:05:25.29 getting your blood pressure at least as low as 110 systolic 00:05:25.32\00:05:29.02 and 75 diastolic is optimal. 00:05:29.06\00:05:32.46 If you're not on medication. 00:05:32.49\00:05:33.86 >>John: Okay. So you mentioned medication. 00:05:33.90\00:05:36.03 Medication is one way to lower undesirably high blood pressure, 00:05:36.06\00:05:41.30 correct? 00:05:41.34\00:05:41.97 >>Dr. DeRose: Correct. 00:05:42.00\00:05:42.64 >>John: Okay. 00:05:42.67\00:05:43.74 Is that medication effective usually, or ineffective? 00:05:43.77\00:05:46.88 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, it's an interesting question. 00:05:46.91\00:05:48.28 The medications themselves typically are effective. 00:05:48.31\00:05:51.18 But what we're finding as we look at the research is, 00:05:51.21\00:05:53.62 if you follow people for just a year, many of them, 00:05:53.65\00:05:57.32 with some of the blood pressure drugs, 00:05:57.35\00:05:59.12 only one out of four people 00:05:59.15\00:06:00.72 keep taking that drug for a full year. 00:06:00.76\00:06:03.02 >>John: Well, why would people stop? 00:06:03.06\00:06:04.36 >>Dr. DeRose: Because of the side effects. 00:06:04.39\00:06:05.79 >>John: Okay. What are some of the side effects? 00:06:05.83\00:06:08.23 >>Dr. DeRose: Some common side effects 00:06:08.26\00:06:09.60 of common blood pressure drugs: 00:06:09.63\00:06:11.20 frequent urination, cough, chronic cough, 00:06:11.23\00:06:16.24 decreased energy level, 00:06:16.27\00:06:18.91 decreased sexual performance, 00:06:18.94\00:06:21.51 depression. 00:06:21.54\00:06:23.45 I mean, the list is a staggering one, and people are impacted. 00:06:23.48\00:06:27.68 I've seen patients who've gone, before coming to my office, 00:06:27.72\00:06:30.62 gone to one drug after another after another, because, 00:06:30.65\00:06:34.56 hey, I felt fine, Doctor. 00:06:34.59\00:06:36.96 But then they told me I had high blood pressure, 00:06:36.99\00:06:38.79 and now I'm having all these side effects from the drugs. 00:06:38.83\00:06:42.73 >>John: So, then, we want to be able to get our blood pressure 00:06:42.76\00:06:45.13 under control, keep it under control. 00:06:45.17\00:06:47.70 And I think anyone would agree, I really do, 00:06:47.74\00:06:50.21 I don't think this is alarmist or anti-medicine. 00:06:50.24\00:06:54.18 You're not anti-medicine, are you? 00:06:54.21\00:06:55.51 >>Dr. DeRose: Oh, most definitely not. 00:06:55.54\00:06:56.85 >>John: Okay, I don't think it's anti-medicine to say, 00:06:56.88\00:06:58.65 let's try to live without medications 00:06:58.68\00:07:02.12 that you don't need to take. 00:07:02.15\00:07:04.02 First, it makes good financial sense. 00:07:04.05\00:07:06.19 It has to make good physical sense. 00:07:06.22\00:07:08.02 And if you can avoid, uh, undesirable side effects, 00:07:08.06\00:07:11.89 you're just a whole lot better off. 00:07:11.93\00:07:13.23 So, let's drill down. 00:07:13.26\00:07:15.56 How do we get our blood pressure down if it's up too high? 00:07:15.60\00:07:17.97 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, sometimes the first step is medication, 00:07:18.00\00:07:20.70 just to pick up on your last comment. 00:07:20.74\00:07:22.57 If your pressure is 220 over 120, you know, look it. 00:07:22.60\00:07:25.87 I don't care what you do in this book, 00:07:25.91\00:07:27.41 it's not going to get your pressure down 00:07:27.44\00:07:28.78 to 110 over 70 in a day. 00:07:28.81\00:07:31.08 And when you're running those 220 over 120 numbers, 00:07:31.11\00:07:34.05 you are bombarding your body, and you're at risk for a stroke. 00:07:34.08\00:07:37.19 >>John: Okay, let me ask this. 00:07:37.22\00:07:38.19 I asked a question that I'm now putting on hold. 00:07:38.22\00:07:40.66 Uh, what are the dangers of high blood pressure? 00:07:40.69\00:07:45.03 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, the dangers, 00:07:45.06\00:07:46.03 one that I've mentioned several times is stroke. 00:07:46.06\00:07:48.20 And stroke is not just a killer. 00:07:48.23\00:07:50.23 It's a crippler. 00:07:50.27\00:07:51.57 And, uh, and not just as a crippler, 00:07:51.60\00:07:53.37 but can impair our cognitive abilities. 00:07:53.40\00:07:56.24 Then there's heart attack. 00:07:56.27\00:07:57.57 There's kidney failure. 00:07:57.61\00:07:58.81 There is blindness. 00:07:58.84\00:08:00.48 There is bulging of the blood vessels that can rupture; 00:08:00.51\00:08:03.01 we call it aneurisms. 00:08:03.04\00:08:04.41 All of these are on this list. 00:08:04.45\00:08:05.91 And dementia is on the list as well. 00:08:05.95\00:08:08.18 >>John: Most people, I think, would say, 00:08:08.22\00:08:09.95 oh, that will never happen to me. 00:08:09.98\00:08:12.22 >>Dr. DeRose: Of course. And then it happens. 00:08:12.25\00:08:15.02 And then it's too late. 00:08:15.06\00:08:16.39 So the whole message is, 00:08:16.42\00:08:17.49 you've got to be serious about this silent killer. 00:08:17.53\00:08:20.03 >>John: This is something really where you need 00:08:20.06\00:08:21.60 to be a little proactive, correct? 00:08:21.63\00:08:23.30 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:08:23.33\00:08:24.13 And here's the shocking thing, John. 00:08:24.17\00:08:25.83 Even if a person does not have blood pressure today, 00:08:25.87\00:08:28.24 in the prime of life, in their fifties, early sixties, 00:08:28.27\00:08:30.71 no high blood pressure, 00:08:30.74\00:08:31.87 the data indicates that if you live into your eighties, 00:08:31.91\00:08:34.78 ninety percent of people in those younger years 00:08:34.81\00:08:38.78 will develop high blood pressure. 00:08:38.81\00:08:40.95 We've all got to be concerned about it. 00:08:40.98\00:08:42.92 >>John: Okay. How do we get it down? 00:08:42.95\00:08:44.95 >>Dr. DeRose: Okay, let's talk other than medication. 00:08:44.99\00:08:47.22 We're focusing on natural therapies. 00:08:47.26\00:08:49.09 We go through ten steps. 00:08:49.12\00:08:51.16 We call it No Pressure. 00:08:51.19\00:08:52.89 We're not shooting for a pressure of zero over zero. 00:08:52.93\00:08:55.23 That's what we find in the morgue, okay? 00:08:55.26\00:08:56.97 >>John: Yeah, right. 00:08:57.00\00:08:58.03 >>Dr. DeRose: But we're looking at natural things 00:08:58.07\00:08:59.50 that can lower blood pressure. 00:08:59.53\00:09:00.94 Nutrition is the N. O, optimal choice of beverages. 00:09:00.97\00:09:05.11 P is for physical activity. 00:09:05.14\00:09:07.21 R is for rest. 00:09:07.24\00:09:08.71 E is environment. 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.25 S, social support. 00:09:10.28\00:09:12.11 The other S, stress management. 00:09:12.15\00:09:14.45 Then we talk about Use of natural adjuncts, 00:09:14.48\00:09:17.02 we talk about Refraining from pressors, 00:09:17.05\00:09:19.15 things that raise blood pressure, 00:09:19.19\00:09:20.79 and then Exercising faith in God. 00:09:20.82\00:09:23.49 Those are the ten key steps. 00:09:23.53\00:09:24.93 >>John: Okay, in just a moment we're going to come back to this 00:09:24.96\00:09:26.83 and talk about how you can get your blood pressure down. 00:09:26.86\00:09:29.70 High blood pressure is something that cripples and impairs the 00:09:29.73\00:09:33.10 lives of millions of people. 00:09:33.13\00:09:35.57 Millions and millions. 00:09:35.60\00:09:37.37 And this is something that you want to avoid. 00:09:37.41\00:09:39.27 It's not only good for your physically 00:09:39.31\00:09:40.94 to avoid high blood pressure, 00:09:40.98\00:09:42.01 but good for you spiritually as well. 00:09:42.04\00:09:44.45 We'll be back with more in just a moment. 00:09:44.48\00:09:46.05 ¤[Music] 00:09:46.08\00:09:53.99 >>Announcer: Planning for your financial future 00:09:58.39\00:10:00.06 is a vital aspect of Christian stewardship. 00:10:00.10\00:10:03.03 For this reason, It Is Written is pleased to offer 00:10:03.93\00:10:06.67 free planned giving and estate services. 00:10:06.70\00:10:09.54 For information on how we can help you, 00:10:09.57\00:10:11.91 please call 800-992-2219 00:10:11.94\00:10:16.64 Call today, or visit our website, 00:10:16.68\00:10:19.05 HisLegacy.com 00:10:19.08\00:10:21.15 Call 800-992-2219 00:10:21.18\00:10:25.82 >>John: So what do you do if you or somebody you care about 00:10:26.62\00:10:29.16 has high blood pressure? 00:12:04.69\00:12:08.69 >>Dr. DeRose: One of the things that is often neglected 00:12:08.72\00:12:10.96 in our environment is a kind of twins: 00:12:10.99\00:12:14.46 rest and stress management. 00:12:14.46\00:12:17.00 We devote separate sections in the book to both of these. 00:12:17.03\00:12:19.93 But we find today, especially as we talk about this interface 00:12:19.97\00:12:23.27 between spirituality and physical health, 00:12:23.30\00:12:26.71 that many people are either cutting themselves short 00:12:26.74\00:12:29.21 on rest or they're becoming overly stressed. 00:12:29.24\00:12:32.25 And it's amazing to me, from those dual perspectives 00:12:32.28\00:12:35.55 of minister and physician, 00:12:35.58\00:12:37.19 to realize the Bible has strategies, 00:12:37.22\00:12:39.55 both Jesus offering his rest, 00:12:39.59\00:12:42.16 Jesus offering us stress management. 00:12:42.19\00:12:44.06 “My peace I give to you; my peace I leave with you.” 00:12:44.09\00:12:46.70 So these beautiful biblical truths actually interface 00:12:46.73\00:12:50.53 with an optimal approach to high blood pressure. 00:12:50.57\00:12:52.87 >>John: How much rest should a person be getting? 00:12:52.90\00:12:54.77 >>Dr. DeRose: If you look at the statistics, 00:12:54.80\00:12:56.20 the average person does best 00:12:56.24\00:12:57.67 with about eight hours of sleep a night. 00:12:57.71\00:12:59.47 >>John: And the average person is getting about 00:12:59.51\00:13:01.31 how many hours of sleep? 00:13:01.34\00:13:02.34 >>Dr. DeRose: It's less than that. 00:13:02.38\00:13:03.68 And unfortunately, many of us think because we can 00:13:03.71\00:13:06.21 drive ourselves, we don't need that much rest. 00:13:06.25\00:13:09.42 I was under that delusion for a period of time in my life, John. 00:13:09.45\00:13:12.69 And the interesting thing, if you're driving yourself, 00:13:12.72\00:13:15.22 even if you're not using caffeine, and let's face it, 00:13:15.26\00:13:17.66 most people that are pushing themselves 00:13:17.69\00:13:19.13 are resorting to the caffeine, 00:13:19.16\00:13:20.70 the way those things work 00:13:20.73\00:13:22.03 is they ramp up the stress hormones, 00:13:22.06\00:13:24.10 which ramps up the blood pressure. 00:13:24.13\00:13:27.50 >>John: Energy drinks have really pushed caffeine out 00:13:27.54\00:13:29.94 onto the front line now. 00:13:29.97\00:13:31.27 Do people know the dangers inherent in using those things, 00:13:31.31\00:13:34.08 do you think? 00:13:34.11\00:13:35.18 >>Dr. DeRose: It's obvious to me they don't. 00:13:35.21\00:13:36.08 Caffeine is a pressor. 00:13:36.11\00:13:37.65 That means it does raise blood pressure. 00:13:37.68\00:13:39.78 It makes the blood more sticky. 00:13:39.81\00:13:41.68 It actually does a host of things 00:13:41.72\00:13:44.32 that really are undesirable. 00:13:44.35\00:13:45.79 But it raises vigilance, 00:13:45.82\00:13:48.79 especially if you're fatigued. 00:13:48.82\00:13:50.96 But it's at a price. 00:13:50.99\00:13:51.96 It's not really giving you energy; 00:13:51.99\00:13:53.43 it's just whipping the body. 00:13:53.46\00:13:54.56 >>John: So people press themselves. 00:13:54.56\00:13:56.16 Maybe they use caffeine. 00:13:56.20\00:13:57.40 They go, go, go. 00:13:57.43\00:13:58.63 I read recently about someone who says, 00:13:58.67\00:14:00.27 “I get by on four hours of sleep a night.” 00:14:00.30\00:14:02.20 There's a price to pay for that, though, isn't there? 00:14:02.24\00:14:03.94 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:14:03.97\00:14:05.21 And I can guarantee you, that person cutting themselves short 00:14:05.24\00:14:07.54 on sleep is worsening how insulin works in the body, 00:14:07.58\00:14:10.71 raising stress hormone levels, and raising blood pressure, 00:14:10.75\00:14:13.65 whether or not they have full-blown hypertension 00:14:13.68\00:14:16.12 today or not. 00:14:16.15\00:14:17.22 >>John: Hmm. Okay, so what do you say to somebody 00:14:17.25\00:14:21.16 who's not getting enough rest? 00:14:21.19\00:14:22.42 You say, get more rest, but they don't. 00:14:22.46\00:14:24.46 Simple question: how does somebody get more rest? 00:14:26.46\00:14:29.03 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, there's a lot of strategies. 00:14:29.06\00:14:30.33 We actually go through a whole chapter in the book 00:14:30.37\00:14:32.13 dealing with this. 00:14:32.17\00:14:33.17 One of the simple strategies that not everyone 00:14:33.20\00:14:35.34 is ready for yet, 00:14:35.37\00:14:37.04 but it's actually called throwing away the alarm clock. 00:14:37.07\00:14:40.04 And if you do that, it puts a little burden on you 00:14:40.08\00:14:43.11 to get to bed early enough that you can wake up in time. 00:14:43.14\00:14:47.45 >>John: Yeah, I don't think everybody's ready for that. 00:14:47.48\00:14:49.18 What's something everybody's ready for? 00:14:49.22\00:14:50.59 >>Dr. DeRose: If you're not ready to get rid 00:14:50.62\00:14:52.02 of the alarm clock, 00:14:52.05\00:14:53.22 at least start dialing back the time when you go to bed, 00:14:53.25\00:14:57.03 and taking time to wind down. 00:14:57.06\00:14:59.23 Biblical study, watching “It Is Written.” 00:14:59.26\00:15:01.83 Some great things you can do before going to bed. 00:15:01.86\00:15:03.77 >>John: Amen. I could agree with that. 00:15:03.80\00:15:05.50 Okay, so rest is important in lowering blood pressure. 00:15:05.53\00:15:08.00 Get more rest. 00:15:08.04\00:15:10.41 That's something everyone can do. 00:15:10.44\00:15:13.51 What else? 00:15:13.54\00:15:14.81 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, let's talk a little bit more about 00:15:14.84\00:15:16.28 the stress side of the equation. 00:15:16.31\00:15:18.98 The analogy we use in the book to try to make it 00:15:19.01\00:15:21.28 a little bit more graphic, I mean, 00:15:21.32\00:15:22.62 stress often seems a bit nebulous. 00:15:22.65\00:15:24.55 So we say, imagine walking into your bedroom 00:15:24.59\00:15:27.52 and finding a ravenous lion waiting for you. 00:15:27.56\00:15:30.83 >>John: That would be stressful. 00:15:30.86\00:15:32.36 >>Dr. DeRose: What do you do if there's a lion in the bedroom? 00:15:32.39\00:15:35.13 You can ignore it. 00:15:35.16\00:15:36.63 You can run from it. 00:15:36.67\00:15:37.70 You can fight it. 00:15:37.73\00:15:38.97 And we use this as an analogy for how we deal with stressors. 00:15:39.00\00:15:42.14 Some stressors we do need to eliminate. 00:15:42.17\00:15:44.74 >>John: Is it, is it easy to know which ones, 00:15:44.77\00:15:46.71 do you think? 00:15:46.74\00:15:47.94 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, this is where spiritual discernment 00:15:47.98\00:15:49.34 comes in, John. 00:15:49.38\00:15:50.51 You know, a lot of people underestimate 00:15:50.55\00:15:52.25 how important prayer is. 00:15:52.28\00:15:53.85 One of the routine things I do in my medical practice 00:15:53.88\00:15:57.09 is pray with patients, if they're receptive to that. 00:15:57.12\00:16:00.19 Because I believe that God can guide 00:16:00.22\00:16:02.59 us in making these important decisions. 00:16:02.62\00:16:04.73 >>John: All right. Okay, so get a little more rest. 00:16:04.76\00:16:08.60 Eliminate stressors out of your life. 00:16:08.63\00:16:11.80 Okay. Those are fairly straightforward 00:16:11.83\00:16:15.30 things that a person can do. 00:16:15.34\00:16:16.44 Let's keep on going down through the list 00:16:16.47\00:16:18.41 of things that people can do to lower their blood pressure 00:16:18.44\00:16:21.48 and therefore lower their risk 00:16:21.51\00:16:23.04 of some catastrophic health event. 00:16:23.08\00:16:25.51 >>Dr. DeRose: Let's talk about one that many people, 00:16:25.55\00:16:27.78 their eyes kind of gloss over when we speak about this. 00:16:27.82\00:16:30.12 We say, refraining from pressors. 00:16:30.15\00:16:33.59 A lot of people say, well, what is a pressor? 00:16:33.62\00:16:35.96 It's something that raises blood pressure. 00:16:35.99\00:16:37.66 >>John: And they would be drugs such as: 00:16:37.69\00:16:39.23 >>Dr. DeRose: They'd be drugs like Advil, like Nutren, 00:16:39.26\00:16:42.06 like Motrin, ibuprofen, Naprosyn, 00:16:42.10\00:16:45.50 these common pain-relieving medications, 00:16:45.53\00:16:48.00 many of them available over the counter. 00:16:48.04\00:16:50.94 These drugs actually can raise blood pressure in some people 00:16:50.97\00:16:53.88 as much as 10 or 15 points. 00:16:53.91\00:16:56.04 >>John: Do you have to consume a lot of that medication 00:16:56.08\00:16:58.45 in order to get, see the blood pressure spike? 00:24:24.99\00:24:27.93 >>Dr. DeRose: Actually, if you look at the research, 00:24:27.96\00:24:29.40 research shows that when we fellowship 00:24:29.43\00:24:31.33 with others in church community, we have less hospitalizations. 00:24:31.37\00:24:36.24 We're hospitalized for a shorter duration if we end in the, 00:24:36.27\00:24:39.01 up in the hospital. 00:24:39.04\00:24:40.11 We live longer. 00:24:40.14\00:24:41.51 Our blood pressure tends to be lower. 00:24:41.54\00:24:43.28 And it's not just that corporate worship. 00:24:43.31\00:24:45.95 It's also our intrinsic spirituality: 00:24:45.98\00:24:48.72 taking time for prayer, taking time for a devotional life. 00:24:48.75\00:24:52.42 In fact, some of the research suggests that 00:24:52.45\00:24:54.72 private relationship with our Creator is the most powerful. 00:24:54.76\00:24:59.63 >>John: When you think of high blood pressure, 00:24:59.66\00:25:02.33 well, that word says it all: 00:25:02.36\00:25:03.93 pressure. 00:25:03.97\00:25:04.77 If you have high blood pressure, 00:25:04.80\00:25:06.10 it seems to me you're under pressure somewhere, 00:25:06.13\00:25:08.64 or your body's under pressure. 00:25:08.67\00:25:10.47 And the Bible is all about 00:25:10.51\00:25:12.34 coming into a relationship with God and having that, 00:25:12.37\00:25:15.98 that pressure take away, taken away, or that pressure borne, 00:25:16.01\00:25:19.61 carried, by Jesus. 00:25:19.65\00:25:21.18 What does he say? 00:25:21.22\00:25:22.38 “Come to me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, 00:25:22.42\00:25:24.69 and I will give you rest.” 00:25:24.72\00:25:27.79 In the Ten Commandments, 00:25:27.82\00:25:28.89 the fourth commandment deals with Sabbath rest, 00:25:28.92\00:25:31.56 something many people have forgotten about or neglected. 00:25:31.59\00:25:34.83 There's something about a relationship with Jesus 00:25:34.86\00:25:37.23 that is designed to see our stressors roll away. 00:25:37.27\00:25:42.60 Jesus came that he would give us life, John 10, verse 10, 00:25:42.64\00:25:46.27 and “give it more abundantly.” 00:25:46.31\00:25:49.28 So you've seen both sides of this, 00:25:49.31\00:25:50.71 as a minister of the gospel and as a physician. 00:25:50.75\00:25:53.18 Faith in Christ ultimately, 00:25:53.21\00:25:54.98 if entered into with both eyes open, 00:25:55.02\00:25:58.15 is the prescription for a healthy life in this world 00:25:58.19\00:26:01.12 and in the world to come. 00:26:01.16\00:26:01.96 >>Dr. DeRose: There's no question. 00:26:01.99\00:26:03.19 It's so powerful. And you mentioned the Sabbath. 00:26:03.22\00:26:05.13 We have actually research in the book from the Ansons in Israel, 00:26:05.16\00:26:08.50 actually showing that the Sabbath 00:26:08.53\00:26:10.17 has health-giving benefits. 00:26:10.20\00:26:12.07 >>John: There is life in Jesus Christ. 00:26:12.10\00:26:14.20 God made us. 00:26:14.24\00:26:15.34 The Bible says we are fearfully and wonderfully made. 00:26:15.37\00:26:19.11 And as you benefit physically, 00:26:19.14\00:26:22.24 you will benefit and thrive spiritually as well. 00:26:22.28\00:26:26.68 We only get one go-around on this planet. 00:26:26.72\00:26:29.38 I think it's just wisdom, isn't it, 00:26:29.42\00:26:31.09 to think about what you can do to get the most 00:26:31.12\00:26:33.25 out of your time here, not just in a self-centered way, 00:26:33.29\00:26:36.16 but the better you do, 00:26:36.19\00:26:37.19 the more service and the more faithful service 00:26:37.23\00:26:39.29 you can do to God and others also. 00:26:39.33\00:26:41.30 >>Dr. DeRose: You got it right on, John. 00:26:41.33\00:26:42.76 >>John: There you go. 00:26:42.80\00:26:44.00 Dr. David DeRose, thanks so very much for joining me today. 00:26:44.03\00:26:46.10 I appreciate it. 00:26:46.13\00:26:47.30 Your book, “30 Days to Natural Blood Pressure Control”" 00:26:47.37\00:26:49.70 It is magnificent. 00:26:49.74\00:26:51.47 I know this is going to be a successful book, 00:26:51.51\00:26:52.87 and the principles in here, 00:26:52.91\00:26:53.81 some of which we have shared today, 00:26:53.84\00:26:55.74 will be the difference between life and death for many. 00:26:55.78\00:26:59.78 Grab a hold of what God is sharing with you today, 00:26:59.81\00:27:02.65 and enjoy more life, 00:27:02.68\00:27:04.35 longer life, 00:27:04.39\00:27:05.02 a healthier life, 00:27:05.05\00:27:06.25 and rejoice more in your Friend and Savior, Jesus Christ.” 00:27:06.29\00:27:08.82 ¤[Music] 00:27:08.86\00:27:16.53 >>John: So what do you do if you or somebody you care about 00:27:18.90\00:27:21.20 has high blood pressure?
