Thanks for joining me. 00:00:20.82\00:00:23.28 Now, imagine it, if you can. 00:00:23.32\00:00:25.85 You've been reading your Bible, 00:00:25.89\00:00:27.79 and you're now convinced that Jesus is coming back soon, 00:00:27.82\00:00:32.59 really coming back, literally. 00:00:32.63\00:00:34.73 You believe that you're gonna see Jesus 00:00:34.76\00:00:36.60 and the angels on a certain day. 00:00:36.63\00:00:40.54 October days in eastern New York state 00:00:40.57\00:00:42.77 near the Vermont border can be cool. 00:00:42.80\00:00:45.51 Life in the middle of the 19th century could be difficult, 00:00:45.54\00:00:48.18 and having peculiar religious views 00:00:48.21\00:00:50.78 doesn't ordinarily buy you popularity, 00:00:50.81\00:00:53.18 and when you're a Millerite, 00:00:53.21\00:00:54.98 a follower of the Baptist preacher William Miller, 00:00:55.02\00:00:57.89 well, you're out there on the fringes. 00:00:57.92\00:00:59.89 Now, you're not alone; 00:00:59.92\00:01:01.46 Miller has tens of thousands of followers, 00:01:01.49\00:01:04.03 but still you--well, really, 00:01:04.06\00:01:06.36 none of that matters because you're gonna see Jesus. 00:01:06.39\00:01:09.20 He's coming back in just a few weeks. 00:01:09.23\00:01:11.70 He's coming back in just a few days. 00:01:11.73\00:01:13.70 He's coming back tomorrow. 00:01:13.74\00:01:15.54 You'll see Jesus in just a few hours. 00:01:15.57\00:01:18.94 Can you imagine? 00:01:18.97\00:01:20.98 So as October the 22nd got closer, 00:01:22.28\00:01:25.05 the Millerites, the Adventists, 00:01:25.08\00:01:27.15 were more than excited. 00:01:27.18\00:01:28.88 These were regular hard-working people, faithful Christians. 00:01:28.92\00:01:32.22 And Jesus was returning? Tomorrow? 00:01:32.25\00:01:36.29 William Miller had predicted that Jesus would return in 1843, 00:01:36.32\00:01:40.53 but that didn't happen. 00:01:40.56\00:01:41.76 But then he recalculated and said 00:01:41.80\00:01:43.50 the Second Coming would happen in the spring of 1844. 00:01:43.53\00:01:47.50 That didn't happen either. 00:01:47.54\00:01:49.07 The Millerites were perplexed, 00:01:49.10\00:01:51.41 until a man named Samuel Snow calculated 00:01:51.44\00:01:54.44 that Jesus would return on October the 22nd, 1844. 00:01:54.48\00:02:00.72 Of course! 00:02:00.75\00:02:01.52 William Miller was a rational man. 00:02:02.92\00:02:05.52 He was not a fanatic. He was a deep Bible student. 00:02:05.55\00:02:09.12 But he was wrong. 00:02:09.16\00:02:11.56 He was right about an awful lot, 00:02:11.59\00:02:13.66 but you don't have to be wrong about much 00:02:13.70\00:02:15.86 to botch a prediction about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. 00:02:15.90\00:02:18.97 As he was studying the Bible, 00:02:19.00\00:02:21.30 he came to Daniel 8 and verse 14, which says, 00:02:21.34\00:02:25.07 "Unto two thousand three hundred days; 00:02:25.11\00:02:27.31 then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." 00:02:27.34\00:02:29.88 Miller was convinced he was looking at a prophecy 00:02:29.91\00:02:32.61 about the Second Coming of Jesus. 00:02:32.65\00:02:35.08 Based on the prevailing idea that the sanctuary 00:02:35.12\00:02:37.92 represented the earth, 00:02:37.95\00:02:40.06 he figured the earth would be cleansed 00:02:40.09\00:02:43.19 when Jesus returned the second time. 00:02:43.22\00:02:45.79 What else could that possibly mean? 00:02:45.83\00:02:47.60 Looking at the Scriptures, he determined that a day 00:02:47.60\00:02:51.13 represents a year in Bible prophecy. 00:02:51.17\00:02:54.04 He was right about that. 00:02:54.07\00:02:55.54 That's a symbol, just like a beast represents a nation, 00:02:55.57\00:02:59.37 and a woman represents the church. 00:02:59.41\00:03:01.91 Miller figured that Jesus would return 00:03:01.94\00:03:03.85 at the end of 2,300 years. 00:03:03.88\00:03:06.92 If only he could know when that period began, 00:03:06.95\00:03:10.49 then he could know when it ended. 00:03:10.52\00:03:12.39 But then Miller found his starting point. 00:03:12.42\00:03:14.99 Daniel chapter 9 spoke of a decree, of the "going forth 00:03:15.99\00:03:20.30 of the commandment to restore" and rebuild Jerusalem. 00:03:20.33\00:03:23.60 Miller found that decree in Ezra chapter 7. 00:03:23.63\00:03:27.64 It was issued in 457 BC by the Medo-Persian emperor Artaxerxes. 00:03:27.67\00:03:33.78 So that was that, then. 00:03:33.81\00:03:35.51 Start in 457 BC, add 2,300 days--or 2,300 years-- 00:03:35.54\00:03:42.98 and you get to 1843. 00:03:43.02\00:03:46.19 You correct that because you forgot 00:03:46.22\00:03:47.66 that there's no year 0, and you get to 1844. 00:03:47.69\00:03:53.70 Miller's opponents couldn't argue with his logic. 00:03:53.73\00:03:56.60 Now, of course, the Bible does say that no one knows 00:03:56.63\00:03:59.07 the day or the hour of Jesus' appearing, 00:03:59.10\00:04:01.80 but Miller never set a date. 00:04:01.84\00:04:04.47 It was Samuel Snow who set the date. 00:04:04.51\00:04:06.54 He did that in August of 1844. 00:04:06.57\00:04:09.98 Miller never accepted that interpretation 00:04:10.01\00:04:12.45 until October the 6th. 00:04:12.48\00:04:14.95 He spent October the 22nd in this very room, 00:04:14.98\00:04:18.82 looking out this window, 00:04:18.85\00:04:20.82 waiting for Jesus to come in the eastern sky. 00:04:20.86\00:04:24.29 ¤[Music]¤ 00:04:24.33\00:04:27.36 So imagine how it felt on October the 23rd, 1844. 00:04:27.40\00:04:33.44 You weren't even expecting to be here, 00:04:33.47\00:04:35.34 but now you have to face people. 00:04:35.37\00:04:36.87 You have to go back to your occupation. 00:04:36.91\00:04:39.24 You have to admit that the movement was wrong, 00:04:39.27\00:04:41.71 that you've made a big mistake. 00:04:41.74\00:04:45.31 Where was God in all of this? 00:04:45.35\00:04:47.88 And what about the Bible? 00:04:47.92\00:04:49.62 How do you relate to the Bible now? 00:04:49.65\00:04:52.12 Well, some people simply chose not to, 00:04:52.15\00:04:53.89 and they gave up on their hope in God altogether. 00:04:53.92\00:04:56.83 Most people simply went back to the churches 00:04:56.86\00:04:59.53 from which they'd come, 00:04:59.56\00:05:00.66 but that wasn't an option for everyone. 00:05:00.70\00:05:03.43 William and Lucy Miller and their children were kicked out 00:05:03.47\00:05:05.73 of the Baptist church that they'd been attending 00:05:05.77\00:05:07.94 because they continued to hang on to the belief 00:05:07.97\00:05:10.94 that Jesus was still coming back soon. 00:05:10.97\00:05:14.84 And then there were others who tried to figure out 00:05:14.88\00:05:17.55 how God was leading now. 00:05:17.58\00:05:20.42 But what became known as the Great Disappointment of 1844 00:05:20.45\00:05:24.69 became to the heirs of the Millerite movement 00:05:24.72\00:05:27.89 what the great disappointment of Calvary became 00:05:27.92\00:05:30.73 to the followers of Jesus. 00:05:30.76\00:05:32.96 Jesus' disciples were sure that their master would set up 00:05:32.99\00:05:36.00 an earthly kingdom and drive the heathen Romans 00:05:36.03\00:05:39.30 from the covenant land. 00:05:39.33\00:05:41.24 On the road to Emmaus, two disciples poured out 00:05:41.27\00:05:43.74 their despondency to Jesus Himself, saying, 00:05:43.77\00:05:47.01 "But we were hoping that it was He 00:05:47.04\00:05:48.71 who was going to redeem Israel." 00:05:48.74\00:05:50.91 Luke 24:21. 00:05:50.95\00:05:53.08 But the disciples' hopes had been based on a false view 00:05:53.11\00:05:56.75 of the Messiah's mission. 00:05:56.79\00:05:58.85 They weren't wrong in recognizing Jesus 00:05:58.89\00:06:00.96 as the promised Savior, 00:06:00.99\00:06:02.89 but they were wrong in their understanding of His work. 00:06:02.92\00:06:06.93 The same was true with the disappointed followers 00:06:06.96\00:06:09.13 of William Miller in 1844. 00:06:09.16\00:06:11.97 They were correct in their timing, 00:06:12.00\00:06:14.60 but they were wrong about the event. 00:06:14.64\00:06:16.87 But God wouldn't leave His faithful followers 00:06:16.91\00:06:19.01 in the dark for long. 00:06:19.04\00:06:20.64 After an all-night vigil, weary and heartbroken, 00:06:20.68\00:06:24.58 two men decided to visit some of their fellow believers, 00:06:24.61\00:06:27.28 who'd been through the same disappointment. 00:06:27.32\00:06:29.58 One of them was Hiram Edson. 00:06:29.62\00:06:32.65 Here's how he explained the events that followed: 00:06:32.69\00:06:35.62 "We started, and while passing through a large field 00:06:35.66\00:06:39.49 I was stopped about midway of the field. 00:06:39.53\00:06:42.46 Heaven seemed open to my view, 00:06:42.50\00:06:44.80 and I saw distinctly and clearly that instead of our High Priest 00:06:44.83\00:06:48.87 coming out of the Most Holy of the heavenly sanctuary 00:06:48.90\00:06:51.87 to come to this earth on the tenth day of the seventh month, 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.78 at the end of the 2,300 days, 00:06:54.81\00:06:57.61 He for the first time entered on that day the second apartment 00:06:57.65\00:07:02.58 of that sanctuary; 00:07:02.62\00:07:04.49 and that He had a work to perform in the Most Holy 00:07:04.52\00:07:08.06 before coming to this earth." 00:07:08.09\00:07:10.06 With this dramatic insight, 00:07:10.09\00:07:11.66 the movement birthed by William Miller 00:07:11.69\00:07:13.50 gave rise to yet another movement, 00:07:13.53\00:07:16.23 the one predicted by the angel spoken of by John 00:07:16.26\00:07:19.20 in the tenth chapter of the book of Revelation. 00:07:19.23\00:07:21.94 "Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, 00:07:21.97\00:07:25.44 and nations, and tongues, and kings." 00:07:25.47\00:07:29.01 Revelation 10:11. 00:07:29.04\00:07:31.08 A movement was born, and with this new movement, 00:07:31.11\00:07:34.05 God set in place a global initiative 00:07:34.08\00:07:36.89 to complete the Protestant Reformation. 00:07:36.92\00:07:39.99 I'll have more in just a moment. 00:07:40.02\00:07:41.89 ¤[Music]¤ 00:07:41.92\00:07:47.40 >>John: I'm John Thanks for joining me. 00:08:52.66\00:08:55.23 William Miller became the figurehead for a movement 00:08:55.26\00:08:57.73 after studying his Bible and then sharing what he found. 00:08:57.77\00:09:01.60 He and others believed that Jesus was coming back 00:09:01.64\00:09:03.97 to the earth in the year 1844. 00:09:04.01\00:09:06.84 And they believed this based on a prophecy, 00:09:06.88\00:09:09.48 which said that the sanctuary would be cleansed. 00:09:09.51\00:09:13.45 But Jesus didn't come back in 1844. So where was the error? 00:09:13.48\00:09:18.89 Miller believed, like virtually everybody else, 00:09:18.92\00:09:21.49 that the sanctuary in Daniel 8:14 was the earth. 00:09:21.52\00:09:25.63 But look into the Bible, and you see that that sanctuary 00:09:25.66\00:09:28.26 could really only be the portable sanctuary 00:09:28.30\00:09:31.63 that went with Israel throughout the wilderness 00:09:31.67\00:09:34.10 or the temple or the great sanctuary of God in heaven. 00:09:34.14\00:09:39.07 In Old Testament times, 00:09:39.11\00:09:40.21 the cleansing of the sanctuary took place once a year 00:09:40.24\00:09:44.11 on the Day of Atonement. 00:09:44.15\00:09:45.91 It was a day of judgment. 00:09:45.95\00:09:48.75 So some of these Millerite believers went to the Bible 00:09:48.78\00:09:51.52 and studied, and their eyes were opened. 00:09:51.55\00:09:55.86 Hebrews 8, verses 1 and 2 says, 00:09:57.09\00:09:59.49 "We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand 00:09:59.53\00:10:03.47 of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens. 00:10:03.50\00:10:06.10 A Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle, 00:10:06.13\00:10:10.17 which the Lord erected, and not man." 00:10:10.21\00:10:13.88 The book of Hebrews describes this sanctuary again 00:10:13.91\00:10:16.18 in the following chapter: 00:10:16.21\00:10:17.41 "But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, 00:10:17.45\00:10:22.18 with the greater and more perfect tabernacle 00:10:22.22\00:10:24.62 not made with hands, that is, not of this creation." 00:10:24.65\00:10:29.06 That's Hebrews 9, verse 11. 00:10:29.09\00:10:31.63 These believers found that on the Day of Atonement, 00:10:31.66\00:10:34.03 a new sacrifice was offered, by which the record of sin 00:10:34.10\00:10:38.33 in the sanctuary was taken away or cleansed. 00:10:38.37\00:10:41.77 On that day, God's people would afflict their souls 00:10:41.80\00:10:44.97 and search their hearts to be sure that no unconfessed 00:10:45.01\00:10:48.78 or unforsaken sin remained in their lives. 00:10:48.81\00:10:53.85 Once the record of sin was expunged from the sanctuary, 00:10:53.88\00:10:57.82 the sins were transferred again to a scapegoat. 00:10:57.85\00:11:02.06 That goat would then be led into the wilderness to carry 00:11:02.09\00:11:04.93 the sins of the people into oblivion and to die there. 00:11:04.96\00:11:09.70 But the ultimate purpose of the service was not only 00:11:09.73\00:11:11.87 to remove the record of sin, 00:11:11.90\00:11:13.27 but to remove sin itself from the hearts and lives 00:11:13.30\00:11:16.64 of the worshipers. 00:11:16.67\00:11:17.81 Leviticus 16:30 says, 00:11:17.84\00:11:19.97 "For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, 00:11:20.01\00:11:23.88 to cleanse you, 00:11:23.91\00:11:25.31 that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord." 00:11:25.35\00:11:28.62 And like the sanctuary on earth, 00:11:28.65\00:11:30.89 the book of Hebrews is clear that the sanctuary 00:11:30.92\00:11:33.86 in heaven must also be cleansed. 00:11:33.89\00:11:37.36 "Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things 00:11:37.39\00:11:40.10 in the heavens should be purified with these, 00:11:40.13\00:11:43.57 but the heavenly things themselves 00:11:43.60\00:11:45.87 with better sacrifices than these." 00:11:45.90\00:11:48.50 The judgment hour message hadn't ever been proclaimed. 00:11:48.54\00:11:51.97 It was a message that would lead people to the Bible-- 00:11:52.01\00:11:55.48 Bibles people now had, thanks to the reformers. 00:11:55.51\00:11:59.05 These were people who were free to think for themselves, 00:11:59.08\00:12:02.35 thanks to Roger Williams, and it was a message 00:12:02.38\00:12:05.19 that would prepare people for the Second Coming of Jesus, 00:12:05.22\00:12:08.02 a teaching now known, thanks to the ministry of William Miller. 00:12:08.06\00:12:12.63 It's interesting that Martin Luther said this: 00:12:12.66\00:12:14.83 "I persuade myself verily, that the day of judgment 00:12:14.86\00:12:18.93 will not be absent full three hundred years. 00:12:18.97\00:12:22.80 God will not, cannot, suffer this wicked world much longer!" 00:12:22.84\00:12:27.54 In the 1500s, Martin Luther said that the judgment 00:12:28.64\00:12:31.88 would take place 300 years into the future 00:12:31.91\00:12:34.88 in the middle of the 1800s. 00:12:34.92\00:12:37.19 So what would God do? 00:12:37.22\00:12:38.99 Two thousand years before, John wrote in the book of Revelation 00:12:39.02\00:12:42.72 that the judgment hour message would go to the world, 00:12:42.76\00:12:46.03 but there was much more, which by the time of William Miller, 00:12:46.06\00:12:49.83 still had not been proclaimed. 00:12:49.86\00:12:52.43 This is Revelation 14:6 and 7. John wrote, 00:12:52.47\00:12:56.27 "And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, 00:12:56.30\00:12:59.61 having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them 00:12:59.64\00:13:02.34 that dwell on the earth, 00:13:02.38\00:13:03.81 and to every nation, and kindred, 00:13:03.85\00:13:06.15 and tongue, and people, 00:13:06.18\00:13:07.75 saying with a loud voice, 00:13:07.78\00:13:09.45 'Fear God, and give glory to Him; 00:13:09.48\00:13:11.85 for the hour of His judgment is come: 00:13:11.89\00:13:14.19 and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, 00:13:14.22\00:13:16.83 and the sea, and the fountains of waters.'" 00:13:16.86\00:13:19.46 John wrote that there would come a time when God's people 00:13:20.33\00:13:23.43 would be called to live lives of complete surrender 00:13:23.47\00:13:26.37 to Jesus in the time of earth's final judgment. 00:13:26.40\00:13:29.64 And there's something else in that passage: 00:13:29.67\00:13:33.71 "Worship Him that made heaven, and earth, 00:13:33.74\00:13:36.31 and the sea, and the fountains of waters." 00:13:36.34\00:13:39.18 That's a direct quote from the fourth commandment, 00:13:39.21\00:13:42.82 the Sabbath commandment. 00:13:42.85\00:13:44.59 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 00:13:44.62\00:13:47.22 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work, 00:13:47.26\00:13:49.76 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God." 00:13:49.79\00:13:53.66 It goes on to say, 00:13:53.70\00:13:55.16 "For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, 00:13:55.20\00:13:58.70 the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: 00:13:58.73\00:14:03.51 wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it." 00:14:03.54\00:14:07.64 It's about as clear as it could be. 00:14:08.28\00:14:11.28 In earth's last days, 00:14:11.31\00:14:12.81 God would call His people to surrender, 00:14:12.85\00:14:16.25 to obedience to His Word rather than obedience 00:14:16.28\00:14:19.35 to the teachings of men or of churches. 00:14:19.39\00:14:21.69 Up until this time, 00:14:21.72\00:14:22.99 very few people were keeping the seventh-day Sabbath. 00:14:23.02\00:14:25.93 Sunday was the day acknowledged to be the holy day. 00:14:25.96\00:14:29.80 It just stands to reason that Jesus would want the people 00:14:29.83\00:14:32.77 He's going to return for to be surrendered, 00:14:32.80\00:14:36.24 to be living in obedience, because as He has said, 00:14:36.27\00:14:39.44 surrender demonstrates love. 00:14:39.47\00:14:42.78 John 14:15 says, 00:14:42.81\00:14:44.88 "If you love me, keep my commandments." 00:14:44.91\00:14:48.92 So who are these people who'd been keeping 00:14:48.95\00:14:51.15 the commandments of God? 00:14:51.19\00:14:53.22 I'll tell you in just a moment. 00:14:53.25\00:14:54.92 ¤[Music]¤ 00:14:54.96\00:14:59.93 ¤[Music]¤ 00:15:00.96\00:15:03.00 >>Announcer: In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says, 00:15:03.03\00:15:05.70 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:15:05.73\00:15:08.87 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 00:15:08.90\00:15:12.61 "Every Word" is a one-minute Bible-based daily devotional 00:15:12.64\00:15:15.84 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw 00:15:15.88\00:15:18.01 and designed especially for busy people like you. 00:15:18.05\00:15:20.68 Look for "Every Word" on selected networks 00:15:20.72\00:15:23.85 or watch it online every day on our website: 00:15:23.89\00:15:25.92 itiswritten.com. 00:15:25.95\00:15:28.32 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 00:15:28.36\00:15:30.23 Watch "Every Word." Rachel Oakes lived here in Washington, New Hampshire, 00:16:43.67\00:16:46.67 in 1844. 00:16:46.70\00:16:48.80 Her daughter, Delight, was a local school teacher. 00:16:48.84\00:16:51.37 This was almost 70 years after this town became the first 00:16:51.41\00:16:55.94 to be named after George Washington. 00:16:55.98\00:16:58.75 Then, as now, Washington, New Hampshire, 00:16:58.78\00:17:01.35 was just a tiny little slice of the New England landscape. 00:17:01.38\00:17:05.05 But what happened here in Washington in 1844 00:17:05.09\00:17:08.82 went on to make a major impact in the entire world. 00:17:08.86\00:17:12.99 She attended this church, 00:17:15.80\00:17:17.70 pastored by a man named Frederick Wheeler. 00:17:17.73\00:17:21.04 Wheeler had accepted the teachings of William Miller 00:17:21.07\00:17:23.71 and was active in preaching the doctrine of the Second Advent. 00:17:23.74\00:17:28.04 While preaching during a communion service 00:17:28.08\00:17:30.81 in this church building, 00:17:30.85\00:17:32.61 Wheeler made the comment that only those who keep 00:17:32.65\00:17:35.35 all of the Ten Commandments should participate. 00:17:35.38\00:17:38.55 Well, Sister Oakes, 00:17:38.59\00:17:39.69 a Seventh Day Baptist, challenged him, 00:17:39.72\00:17:42.42 and she told him after the service that he wasn't keeping 00:17:42.46\00:17:45.59 all of the Ten Commandments 00:17:45.63\00:17:46.76 because he did not keep the seventh-day Sabbath. 00:17:46.80\00:17:50.37 Wheeler went to his Bible, 00:17:50.40\00:17:51.50 and he studied the matter for himself, 00:17:51.53\00:17:53.17 and he came to the conclusion that Rachel Oakes was right. 00:17:53.20\00:17:56.87 And he became the first Sabbath- keeping Adventist minister. 00:17:56.91\00:18:01.04 And this church building became the first Sabbath-keeping 00:18:01.08\00:18:04.38 Adventist church in the world. 00:18:04.41\00:18:08.02 In March of 1844, he preached his first sermon 00:18:08.05\00:18:11.65 on the subject of the Sabbath. 00:18:11.69\00:18:14.26 A number of families here in Washington 00:18:14.29\00:18:16.12 became Sabbath-keepers. 00:18:16.16\00:18:18.26 A man named Thomas Motherwell Preble learned of the Sabbath 00:18:18.29\00:18:22.06 from Wheeler, and he wrote a tract on the subject 00:18:22.10\00:18:25.03 called "Tract: Showing That the Seventh Day Should Be Observed 00:18:25.07\00:18:28.97 As the Sabbath." 00:18:29.00\00:18:30.37 Somehow a retired sea captain named Joseph Bates, 00:18:30.41\00:18:33.81 who lived in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, 00:18:33.84\00:18:36.08 got hold of that tract. 00:18:36.11\00:18:37.61 And he was so moved by it that he traveled from his home 00:18:37.65\00:18:40.62 60 miles south of Boston to meet with Frederick Wheeler 00:18:40.65\00:18:44.29 here in Washington, New Hampshire-- 00:18:44.32\00:18:46.25 a distance of at least 160 miles. 00:18:46.29\00:18:49.82 The men studied all night long, 00:18:49.86\00:18:52.53 and by the time they were finished, 00:18:52.56\00:18:54.40 Joseph Bates was a Sabbath-keeping Adventist. 00:18:54.46\00:18:57.63 And he was committed. 00:18:59.20\00:19:00.87 While heading back from Washington, New Hampshire, 00:19:00.90\00:19:02.90 to his home in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, 00:19:02.94\00:19:05.74 Bates was crossing a bridge near his home when a man 00:19:05.77\00:19:08.58 named James Madison Monroe Hall called out to him. 00:19:08.61\00:19:11.78 He said, "What's the news, Captain Bates?" 00:19:11.81\00:19:14.82 Bates replied by saying, 00:19:14.85\00:19:15.98 "The news is the seventh day 00:19:16.02\00:19:17.79 is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God." 00:19:17.82\00:19:19.95 Hall began keeping the Sabbath. 00:19:19.99\00:19:21.96 And so a movement began. 00:19:21.99\00:19:23.32 The truth began to spread, 00:19:23.36\00:19:25.09 and this was truth God wanted the world to know. 00:19:25.13\00:19:27.66 The messages of the three angels in Revelation 14 00:19:29.03\00:19:32.23 are called by God the everlasting gospel, 00:19:32.27\00:19:35.14 or the final gospel message-- 00:19:35.17\00:19:37.64 the final good news message to go to the world. 00:19:37.67\00:19:41.24 And that final message contains a call to worship the Creator 00:19:41.28\00:19:45.31 by keeping the seventh-day Sabbath-- 00:19:45.35\00:19:48.02 a day set aside at creation so all of God's children 00:19:48.05\00:19:51.62 could rest, worship, 00:19:51.65\00:19:53.76 and commune with Him in a special way. 00:19:53.79\00:19:57.29 The most basic principle of the Protestant Reformation 00:19:57.33\00:20:00.06 was the supreme authority of the Bible-- 00:20:00.10\00:20:03.26 supreme over church councils and church tradition. 00:20:03.30\00:20:07.44 This new movement God raised up from the ashes 00:20:07.47\00:20:10.07 of the Great Disappointment of 1844 00:20:10.11\00:20:12.87 would focus in a special way on testing all Christian beliefs 00:20:12.91\00:20:17.25 and practices by the Holy Scriptures. 00:20:17.28\00:20:20.98 Even though many reformers taught things 00:20:21.02\00:20:23.18 that didn't quite measure up with the Bible, 00:20:23.22\00:20:25.45 they all appealed to the Bible as their ultimate authority. 00:20:25.49\00:20:29.46 Martin Luther had theological challenges, 00:20:29.49\00:20:31.63 John Calvin taught predestination, 00:20:31.66\00:20:33.90 in spite of the fact that the best-known verse 00:20:33.93\00:20:36.77 in the Bible says that 00:20:36.80\00:20:38.37 "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, 00:20:38.40\00:20:42.27 that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish 00:20:42.30\00:20:46.31 but have everlasting life." 00:20:46.34\00:20:48.18 And down through the years, 00:20:48.21\00:20:49.61 the reformers had a blind spot about the law of God. 00:20:49.64\00:20:54.02 Something so fundamental, 00:20:54.05\00:20:56.28 and yet they were missing something essential. 00:20:56.32\00:20:58.92 But rather than castigate them, 00:20:58.95\00:21:00.96 we remember that the likes of Calvin and Zwingli 00:21:00.99\00:21:03.66 and Luther came to the Bible from out of complete darkness. 00:21:03.69\00:21:07.86 Martin Luther was a Roman Catholic priest. 00:21:07.93\00:21:10.73 They came pre-programmed by tradition. 00:21:10.77\00:21:13.97 The fact that they were able to shake off so much 00:21:14.00\00:21:16.17 of that tradition is remarkable. 00:21:16.20\00:21:18.54 And it's important to remember that truth is progressive. 00:21:18.57\00:21:22.28 It grows down through time. 00:21:22.31\00:21:23.95 Knowledge of agriculture, of science, of mathematics, 00:21:23.98\00:21:27.28 of physical wellness-- well, that grows. 00:21:27.32\00:21:29.85 The same is true of knowledge of the Bible. 00:21:29.88\00:21:32.79 But the sad truth is that many people simply don't grow. 00:21:33.46\00:21:38.06 They accept what they were taught as children, 00:21:38.09\00:21:40.26 and then spend the rest of their lives defending that, 00:21:40.30\00:21:43.20 instead of asking God if there is more that they could learn. 00:21:43.23\00:21:47.37 All the way to about the time of William Miller, 00:21:47.40\00:21:49.70 Christians, with some exceptions, 00:21:49.74\00:21:51.24 believed in--not the Ten Commandments-- 00:21:51.27\00:21:54.38 but in the nine commandments. 00:21:54.41\00:21:55.91 And when those Adventists saw the truth of God's Word 00:21:56.91\00:21:59.48 and understood that all of the Ten Commandments 00:21:59.51\00:22:01.55 should be kept, 00:22:01.58\00:22:02.78 it was the dawning of a new day. 00:22:02.82\00:22:04.89 Sunday had come into Christianity as a tradition 00:22:04.92\00:22:07.92 of the Roman Catholic Church. 00:22:07.96\00:22:10.03 Rome had absorbed Sunday worship from paganism. 00:22:10.06\00:22:13.56 It didn't come from the Bible. 00:22:13.60\00:22:15.86 So you would think, then, that Christians who were 00:22:15.90\00:22:17.97 conscientious about separating from tradition 00:22:18.00\00:22:21.07 would be open to embracing the seventh-day Sabbath. 00:22:21.10\00:22:24.31 That's certainly what God was hoping. 00:22:24.34\00:22:26.47 And that's why the message of the Sabbath 00:22:26.51\00:22:28.38 was included into the final gospel message 00:22:28.41\00:22:31.18 to go to the world. 00:22:31.21\00:22:33.35 As the movement grew, 00:22:33.38\00:22:34.52 it eventually became the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:22:34.55\00:22:38.59 identified in the Bible as 00:22:38.62\00:22:40.36 a "remnant...which keep the commandments of God 00:22:40.39\00:22:43.36 and the testimony of Jesus." 00:22:43.39\00:22:45.33 That's Revelation 12:17. 00:22:45.36\00:22:47.40 This group would proclaim the everlasting gospel, 00:22:47.40\00:22:50.70 the judgment hour message, 00:22:50.73\00:22:52.57 a message of cleansing and preparation, 00:22:52.60\00:22:55.20 pointing to Jesus as High Priest and the believers' only hope. 00:22:55.24\00:23:00.08 The seventh-day Sabbath-- 00:23:00.11\00:23:01.84 total surrender to the indwelling of Jesus, 00:23:01.88\00:23:04.71 resulting in willing obedience to God's law and not man's law. 00:23:04.75\00:23:09.98 The call out of Babylon-- 00:23:10.02\00:23:11.72 out of false worship and into true worship. 00:23:11.75\00:23:15.29 A call to the world to worship-- not the beast-- 00:23:15.32\00:23:19.46 but the Lamb, Jesus, and to receive the seal of God 00:23:19.49\00:23:23.70 rather than the mark of the beast. 00:23:23.73\00:23:26.20 And a relationship with Jesus so strong, 00:23:26.23\00:23:28.47 a dependence on Jesus so complete, 00:23:28.50\00:23:32.31 that they're characterized by Revelation 14:12, which says, 00:23:32.34\00:23:35.68 "Here is the patience of the saints. 00:23:35.71\00:23:38.85 Here are they that keep the commandments of God 00:23:38.88\00:23:42.98 and the faith of Jesus." 00:23:43.02\00:23:45.49 This final company of the faithful and the sacred story 00:23:45.52\00:23:49.09 will share one last message of mercy with the world. 00:23:49.12\00:23:52.63 Jesus was clear; He told Peter in Matthew 16, verse 18 00:23:52.66\00:23:57.10 that He would build His church. 00:23:57.13\00:23:59.53 The early Christian church was led by people such as Peter 00:23:59.57\00:24:02.57 and James and John and Paul and others like them, 00:24:02.60\00:24:06.41 who presented Jesus to the world as the sinner's only hope. 00:24:06.44\00:24:11.05 But that early church lost its way, 00:24:11.08\00:24:13.15 it became corrupted by traditions-- 00:24:13.18\00:24:15.58 many of which came into the church from paganism-- 00:24:15.62\00:24:19.35 and then the church was hijacked by a system 00:24:19.39\00:24:22.56 that neglected the Bible, that departed from the Bible, 00:24:22.59\00:24:26.80 that obscured the Bible, 00:24:26.83\00:24:28.70 and then kept the Bible from the people. 00:24:28.73\00:24:31.57 But Wycliffe and Tyndale and Luther 00:24:31.60\00:24:33.94 and others like them put the Bible back in the hands 00:24:33.97\00:24:37.34 of God's children. 00:24:37.37\00:24:38.91 Hearts were touched by the power of God's Word, 00:24:38.94\00:24:41.81 and the broken system was reformed. 00:24:41.84\00:24:45.11 But that Reformation didn't go all the way, 00:24:45.15\00:24:47.68 so God raised up others across the ocean from Europe, 00:24:47.72\00:24:51.15 beyond the reach of a pope, 00:24:51.19\00:24:53.02 to go back to the Bible, to discover neglected teachings, 00:24:53.05\00:24:56.99 and to deliver the final gospel message to the world. 00:24:57.03\00:25:01.30 Organized in 1863, and now numbering 00:25:01.33\00:25:04.87 in the tens of millions of members, 00:25:04.90\00:25:07.30 the Seventh-day Adventist Church exists 00:25:07.34\00:25:09.60 to complete the work of the reformers, 00:25:09.64\00:25:12.21 to take the message of justification by faith, 00:25:12.24\00:25:14.78 the message of salvation, 00:25:14.81\00:25:16.58 to reveal the character of God to the world. 00:25:16.61\00:25:20.25 And will that work be finished? 00:25:20.28\00:25:21.98 Yes, it will. 00:25:22.02\00:25:22.98 God has promised. 00:25:23.02\00:25:24.99 The everlasting gospel will go to every nation, 00:25:25.02\00:25:28.56 kindred, tongue, and people. 00:25:28.59\00:25:31.39 ¤[Music]¤ 00:25:31.43\00:25:37.23 >>John: Jesus said, "Upon this Rock I will build my church." 00:25:38.37\00:25:41.87 He said he would have a church,
