00:00:44.91\00:00:48.54 and yet the problem is as bad, in fact, 00:00:48.58\00:00:50.61 the problem is worse now than it's ever been before. 00:00:50.65\00:00:56.75 CNN reported that a Pakistani man worked seven days a week 00:00:56.79\00:01:01.36 in a cell-phone store in Hong Kong. 00:01:01.39\00:01:04.69 He slept on the floor of the store 00:01:04.73\00:01:06.33 and was regularly beaten by his 00:01:14.34\00:01:16.84 associates of his employer 00:01:16.87\00:01:18.91 threatened the lives of him and his family. 00:01:18.94\00:01:22.74 CNN also told the story of two Bangladeshi men 00:01:22.78\00:01:26.01 who paid six thousand dollars each 00:01:26.05\00:01:27.78 to secure work at a hotel in Scotland. 00:01:27.82\00:01:31.22 They were told they would earn $22,500 a year. 00:01:31.25\00:01:34.26 When they got there, 00:01:34.29\00:01:35.66 they found that had been changed to $125 a week, $6,500 a year. 00:01:35.69\00:01:42.23 And then they didn't even get that much. 00:01:42.26\00:01:45.90 When they complained about the treatment they were receiving, 00:01:45.93\00:01:49.37 they were told by their employer, “I am sponsoring you. 00:01:49.40\00:01:52.54 If you “...through the use of force, fraud or coercion.” 00:11:34.06\00:11:38.33 Many of them forced to work in the sex industry. 00:11:38.36\00:11:42.06 >>Irina: She would get the money from the recruiter to, 00:11:42.10\00:11:46.00 to have her passport done, most of the time they do not have, 00:11:46.03\00:11:49.77 they do not hold their passports. 00:11:49.80\00:11:52.47 Then she might get some something that they are 00:12:01.82\00:12:05.15 afterwards constrained with, 00:12:05.19\00:12:06.69 because you have a debt to me so you must work for this to, 00:12:06.72\00:12:13.86 to give me back the money. 00:12:13.90\00:12:16.10 Sometimes, the exploitation occurs immediately, 00:12:16.13\00:12:19.17 or sometimes she could be given some time 00:12:19.20\00:12:23.27 to adapt to the situation. 00:12:23.30\00:12:25.44 She will be in an apartment with other 10 ladies or so, 00:12:25.47\00:12:31.18 if we talk about sexual exploitation. 00:12:31.21\00:12:34.15 And then she will get, you know, this physical abuse sometimes, 00:12:34.18\00:12:38.52 or psychological abuse, and the exploitation can, can go on, 00:12:38.55\00:12:46.53 I mean, start immediately. 00:12:46.56\00:12:49.00 For example, the last case I dealt with, 00:12:49.93\00:12:53.07 I think in middle February, was about nine Moldavan citizens 00:12:53.10\00:13:01.48 who were exploited for labor in the Russian Federation. 00:13:01.51\00:13:04.91 They were hiding in their rooms just to, 00:13:04.95\00:13:07.65 only one of them had a cell phone. 00:13:07.68\00:13:09.92 But they somehow managed to threaten the trafficker 00:13:09.95\00:13:14.12 that they would call the police. 00:13:14.16\00:13:16.26 Nevertheless, one woman was, um, also exploited. 00:13:16.29\00:13:23.23 And because she tried to escape, she was kept in the outside 00:13:23.26\00:13:28.54 for two hours with almost no clothes on her, at minus 20. 00:13:28.57\00:13:34.01 So this was a sort of punishment. 00:13:34.04\00:13:35.98 But, nevertheless, they managed to escape. 00:13:36.54\00:13:38.78 They retrieved their passports. 00:13:38.81\00:13:40.82 So they were repatriated to Moldova. 00:13:40.85\00:13:44.09 But in regards to the criminal investigation, 00:13:44.12\00:13:47.79 I cannot tell the stage of it. 00:13:47.82\00:13:50.89 >>John: Human trafficking is simply a response 00:13:55.16\00:13:57.23 to a demand that exists. 00:13:57.27\00:13:59.23 Because prostitution is treated so blithely 00:13:59.27\00:14:02.54 by so many in society today you know, boys will be boys, 00:14:02.57\00:14:06.81 it's a victimless crime, it's the world's oldest profession, 00:14:06.84\00:14:11.18 makes it possible for trafficking to flourish. 00:14:11.21\00:14:13.55 It can operate in the shadows of an evil profession which itself 00:14:13.58\00:14:17.72 thrives in every major city in the United States and, 00:14:17.75\00:14:20.92 it's fair to say, in every major city throughout the world. 00:14:20.96\00:14:24.66 And because from a distance one prostitute looks pretty much 00:14:24.69\00:14:27.50 like another, you can't tell whether that woman 00:14:27.50\00:14:30.20 standing on the street corner is pursuing a career choice 00:14:30.23\00:14:34.37 or is being trafficked against her will. 00:14:34.40\00:14:37.21 It was reported that in Columbus, Ohio, 00:14:37.24\00:14:39.94 of the 1,000 prostitutes put behind bars every year, 00:14:39.97\00:14:44.31 92% are being trafficked. 00:14:44.35\00:14:47.45 That's almost every single one. 00:14:47.48\00:14:50.22 So what does this have to do with the Bible? 00:14:50.25\00:14:52.62 Everything. 00:14:52.65\00:14:54.89 Jesus said in John 8:36, 00:14:54.92\00:14:57.29 “Therefore if the Son makes you free, 00:14:57.33\00:14:59.63 you shall be free indeed.” 00:14:59.66\00:15:01.96 Now, consider this: 00:15:02.00\00:15:02.93 With 21 million people being trafficked 00:15:02.96\00:15:05.30 in the world right now, 00:15:05.33\00:15:06.67 between 600,000 and 800,000 people are 00:15:06.70\00:15:09.94 trafficked across international borders every year. 00:15:09.97\00:15:13.14 Eighty percent are female, and half are children. 00:15:13.17\00:15:17.28 With between 14,500 and 17,500 being trafficked 00:15:17.31\00:15:21.95 into the United States every year, 00:15:21.98\00:15:24.52 that's 50 a day, every day, do you think it's only atheists 00:15:24.55\00:15:29.52 doing the trafficking, or the using? 00:15:29.56\00:15:32.66 You see, God's desire is that people are free. 00:15:32.69\00:15:36.13 And yet there's another form of slavery 00:15:36.16\00:15:38.70 that affects even more people than human trafficking. 00:15:38.73\00:15:43.41 I'll tell you more in just a moment. 00:15:43.44\00:15:45.47 ¤[Music]¤ 00:15:45.51\00:15:54.58 >>John: The flight attendant noticed her. 00:15:56.92\00:15:58.52 She appeared to be 14 maybe 15 years of age 00:15:58.55\00:16:02.32 and she looked out of place. 00:16:02.36\00:16:04.73 She was disheveled, her hair was greasy, 00:16:04.76\00:16:07.76 she looked uncomfortable. 00:16:07.83\00:16:10.23 And she was seated next to a man 00:16:10.27\00:16:11.70 who was considerably older and very well dressed. 00:16:11.73\00:16:15.94 So the flight attendant alerted the pilot, 00:16:15.97\00:16:18.61 the pilot alerted authorities on the ground, 00:16:18.64\00:16:21.14 and when the flight from 00:16:47.50\00:16:49.34 It really does take place. 00:16:49.37\00:16:51.01 It might be taking place at the mall in your neighborhood 00:16:51.04\00:16:53.91 as young people are groomed by unscrupulous 00:19:33.74\00:19:41.41 >>John: Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written, 00:19:46.15\00:19:49.28 in the Republic of Moldova. 00:19:49.32\00:19:52.69 It's a country with a turbulent history littered 00:19:52.72\00:19:54.82 with conquests and invasions. 00:19:54.86\00:19:57.43 In the 1940s and ‘50s, 250,000 Moldovans 00:19:57.46\00:20:01.46 were sent to labor camps in Siberia. 00:20:01.50\00:20:04.73 During World War II, thousands of Jews perished here. 00:20:04.77\00:20:09.77 But the crime against humanity that plagues 00:20:09.80\00:20:12.24 Moldova today is the same as that which plagues 00:20:12.27\00:20:15.48 societies all over the world. 00:20:15.51\00:20:18.61 Human trafficking right now flourishes in the United States. 00:20:18.65\00:20:23.02 And what that means is, you can buy a human being, 00:20:23.05\00:20:28.19 usually a woman or a girl, 00:20:28.22\00:20:30.23 for the purpose of sexual exploitation. 00:20:30.26\00:20:32.99 And you can own her 00:20:33.03\00:20:34.96 just like you would own a pair of shoes or a dog. 00:20:35.00\00:20:40.80 Except very few dogs were ever treated as badly 00:20:40.84\00:20:44.51 as a woman who is trafficked. 00:20:44.54\00:20:46.37 There's a growing awareness in Moldova and around the world 00:20:46.41\00:20:49.88 of the problem of human trafficking, 00:20:49.91\00:20:52.75 with more light being shown on the subject, 00:20:52.78\00:20:54.62 and more and more people willing to lend their support 00:20:54.65\00:20:56.82 to the fight against it. 00:20:56.85\00:20:58.99 There's one thing, and only one thing, 00:20:59.02\00:21:01.99 that will actually fix the problem. 00:21:02.02\00:21:05.26 You can't blame the women and the girls involved. 00:21:05.29\00:21:07.83 No female chooses to be trafficked. 00:21:07.86\00:21:11.07 If you locked them all up, 00:21:11.10\00:21:12.53 all you'd be doing would be punishing the victims. 00:21:12.57\00:21:15.74 And if you locked them up, 00:21:15.77\00:21:17.14 there'd be a fresh batch of victims back out on the streets 00:21:17.17\00:21:20.08 to take their place in no time at all. 00:21:20.11\00:21:23.95 The reason human trafficking exists is economics. 00:21:23.98\00:21:27.88 It's a case of supply and demand. 00:21:27.92\00:21:30.29 If unscrupulous businessmen wouldn't exploit workers, 00:21:30.32\00:21:33.56 you wouldn't have forced labor. 00:21:33.59\00:21:35.76 And if men wouldn't pay money to exploit trafficked women, 00:21:35.79\00:21:39.76 the problem would just go away. 00:21:39.79\00:21:42.43 But the challenge is, there's a market for this. 00:21:42.46\00:21:45.73 The problem is, there are sick men who will pay money for sex, 00:21:45.77\00:21:50.47 and in many cases knowing full well that the victim involved 00:21:50.51\00:21:53.91 is trafficked, or illegal. 00:21:53.94\00:21:57.08 And who are these sick men? 00:21:57.11\00:21:59.28 You might be thinking it's the creepy guy 00:21:59.31\00:22:00.95 who lives down the street from you. 00:22:00.98\00:22:03.02 Ask the experts, and they'll tell you. 00:22:03.05\00:22:06.19 These are schoolteachers and policemen 00:22:06.22\00:22:09.06 and doctors and you-name-it. 00:22:09.09\00:22:12.63 Everyday people. 00:22:12.66\00:22:14.73 Most likely someone you know. 00:22:14.73\00:22:17.90 The problem is hidden in plain view. 00:22:17.93\00:22:22.07 Changing laws might certainly help. 00:22:22.10\00:22:24.01 But laws get broken every day. 00:22:24.04\00:22:27.18 We could take some time to talk about the climate in society 00:22:27.21\00:22:30.51 which fuels this sort of demand. 00:22:30.55\00:22:33.58 The objectification of women, 00:22:33.62\00:22:35.95 and the sexually hyper-charged society 00:22:35.98\00:22:38.65 in which we live that creates demand 00:22:38.69\00:22:42.16 and then presents this as, as some sort of option. 00:22:42.19\00:22:45.29 Ultimately, this is a problem of the human heart. 00:22:45.33\00:22:49.60 You see, there's another kind of slavery. 00:22:49.63\00:22:53.00 Let the Apostle Paul explain in Romans 6:16. 00:22:53.03\00:22:56.47 “Do you not know that to whom you present 00:22:56.50\00:22:58.57 yourselves slaves to obey, 00:22:58.61\00:23:01.34 you are that one's slaves whom you obey, 00:23:01.38\00:23:04.48 whether of sin leading to death, 00:23:04.51\00:23:07.08 or of obedience leading to righteousness?” 00:23:07.12\00:23:10.39 Thankfully, there's a way out. 00:23:10.42\00:23:12.79 Verses 17 and 18: 00:23:12.82\00:23:14.66 “But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, 00:23:14.69\00:23:18.79 yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine 00:23:18.83\00:23:22.10 to which you were delivered. 00:23:22.13\00:23:23.90 And having been set free from sin, 00:23:23.93\00:23:26.80 you became slaves of righteousness.” 00:23:26.84\00:23:29.77 Now, notice: The Bible says that those who are the slaves of sin 00:23:29.80\00:23:34.14 the King James uses the word “servants” 00:23:34.18\00:23:36.61 those who are slaves of sin are slaves of the one they 00:23:36.64\00:23:41.62 have chosen to serve. 00:23:41.65\00:23:44.15 See, ultimately, sin is a choice. 00:23:44.19\00:23:48.49 It might not always feel like that. 00:23:48.52\00:23:50.63 It might feel that it's less of a choice 00:23:50.66\00:23:52.83 if you've become accustomed to living a life of sin, 00:23:52.86\00:23:56.16 and more a matter of being on autopilot. 00:23:56.20\00:23:58.83 But the Bible is clear. 00:23:58.87\00:24:00.64 You can choose to be either the slave of sin 00:24:00.67\00:24:04.97 or the slave of righteousness. 00:24:05.01\00:24:07.44 Romans 6, verse 20. 00:24:07.48\00:24:09.18 “For when you were slaves of sin, 00:24:09.21\00:24:11.45 you were free in regard to righteousness.” 00:24:11.48\00:24:14.22 And verse 22. “But now having been set free from sin, 00:24:14.25\00:24:18.42 and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, 00:24:18.45\00:24:23.66 and the end, everlasting life.” 00:24:23.69\00:24:26.66 So a person who is the slave of sin 00:24:26.70\00:24:29.90 can become instead the slave of righteousness. 00:24:29.93\00:24:33.23 The servant of righteousness. 00:24:33.27\00:24:35.70 A person can learn to love doing right as much as he or she 00:24:35.74\00:24:39.44 ever loved committing sin. 00:24:39.47\00:24:42.51 In 1 Corinthians, chapter 6, Paul speaks to a group of people 00:24:42.54\00:24:45.81 who were adulterers and fornicators and idolators 00:24:45.85\00:24:48.95 and thieves and drunkards and so forth 00:24:48.98\00:24:51.32 and he says this to them in verse 11, 00:24:51.35\00:24:54.49 “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, 00:24:54.52\00:24:58.66 but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified 00:24:58.69\00:25:01.33 in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” 00:25:01.36\00:25:06.10 That's what God can do for you. 00:25:06.13\00:25:09.20 If you let Him. 00:25:09.24\00:25:11.07 And so it's right to hope and pray and work 00:25:11.11\00:25:13.61 that those who are caught in the grip of human trafficking 00:25:13.64\00:25:16.01 find liberation, freedom, find hope in their lives. 00:25:16.04\00:25:20.48 And if you're caught in spiritual slavery, 00:25:20.52\00:25:24.52 you can find that same hope and liberation and freedom 00:25:24.55\00:25:29.29 through Jesus Christ. 00:25:29.32\00:25:31.06 Because “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” 00:25:31.09\00:25:37.97 ¤[Music]¤ 00:25:38.00\00:25:45.54 You want
